Video: Pelosi Gives Bizarre Hot Take on NC-9 Bellwether Race, Says Dem Who Lost Election “Won the Campaign”

After Republican State Senator Dan Bishop won Tuesday night’s hotly contested special election for North Carolina’s 9th congressional district, the spin from the mainstream media and Democrats was both predictable and hilarious.

The race had been billed as a bellwether race for 2020 for months in advance of election day. If Democrat Dan McCready won, it would be a repudiation of President Trump. If Bishop won, it would … mean nothing.

In the aftermath of Bishop’s victory, journalists and liberal commentators switched gears by saying the race contained a mixture of good news and bad news “for both sides.” Also, they asserted Bishop’s win was also a repudiation of Trump or something because the Republican candidate didn’t win the solidly red district by overwhelming numbers.

Like I said: Predictable and hilarious.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) gave what was perhaps the most bizarre spin on what happened when she spoke about McCready’s loss on Thursday, telling reporters McCready “won the campaign” but lost the election:

“I’m very proud of Dan MCready. He’s a great patriot, he’s an independent voice for the district he would have represented,” Pelosi said in press conference on Thursday.

The California Democrat said because MCready performed better than past Democratic candidates in previous elections, “he won the campaign. He didn’t win the election, he won the campaign.”

Watch:

As Bonchie noted the day after the election, the election was actually not good news at all for Democrats.

I speak from firsthand experience when I tell you the atmosphere in this state, in the district, was that McCready was going to win in spite of polls showing a close race. Bishop was the underdog. He was outspent. He had much less time to campaign for the seat than McCready. Bishop was hammered by Democrats and local (liberal) newspaper editorial boards for his support of Trump.

Democrats were mad as hell over the tainted results of the November 2018 race that led to fraud indictments against an ABM ballot harvester affiliated with the original Republican candidate Mark Harris. There was a lot going against Bishop, even in a district that had been in Republican hands since the mid-60s.

He won it anyway, and in the process flipped two counties that had gone for McCready in 2018.

This election does not mean that 2020 will be a cakewalk by any stretch for Republicans in 2020. It means there is a lot of work to be done between now and then in Congressional districts across the country. The fight is on.

But spinning McCready’s loss as a “campaign win” is about as pathetic as it gets for Pelosi. Stacey Abrams must be proud.

It was special election day in North Carolina today, and at 7:30 pm Eastern time the polls closed and the vote counting began in both the 3rd and 9th Congressional districts.

A special election had to be held in 3rd district due to the February 10 passing of Rep. Walter Jones (R). Republican State Rep. Greg Murphy is expected to easily win that election.

The special election in the 9th district was called due to credible allegations of absentee ballot election fraud against Leslie McCrae Dowless, who has been indicted on multiple charges stemming from illegal “ballot harvesting” efforts that state elections officials say gave Republican candidate Mark Harris an advantage in the race over Democrat Dan McCready.

McCready has effectively been running for the seat for over two years.

Harris, who denied any knowledge of Dowless’s actions, declined to run again for the seat. Republican State Senator Dan Bishop won the May primary to run against McCready, which set up the match-up we’ll see play out tonight.

The 9th district has been in Republican hands since the mid 60s, but had the election results stood last year Harris would have only won the race by a little less than 1,000 votes. Before the allegations of election fraud were made public, Democrats said the fact that the race was so competitive in a solidly red district was a sign that voter attitudes towards President Trump were shifting.

Regardless of who wins tonight in what’s being billed as a bellwether election for 2020, here’s something important to remember: This race is the last undecided race of the 2018 election cycle. Whoever wins it will have to turn around in a few months and begin campaigning again for the seat for the 2020 election cycle:

Crazy. But that’s North Carolina politics for you.

You can view the election results for both races as they come in by clicking here or here.

Trump supporter Bryson Gray explains why he bought the biggest MAGA hat he could find prior to attending a campaign rally in Fayetteville, NC – 9/9/19. Screen grab via CBS 17.

If you’re black, Hispanic, gay, or a female and happen to support President Donald Trump, life can be tough in the presence of ‘woke’ liberals if you wear your politics on your sleeve. That goes doubly so if you are bold enough to wear a MAGA hat, which to unhinged TDS sufferers symbolizes hate, bigotry, racism, you name it.

For privileged white liberal actresses like Alyssa Milano, the “MAGA hat is the new white hood.” For Bette Midler, black Trump supporters at Trump rallies are a paid part of the “blackground.” Actress Debra Messing is in agreement with those who say “A black vote for Trump is mental illness.”

In other words, how dare black Americans think differently.

With that in mind, let’s turn to Trump’s rally in Fayetteville, NC on Monday evening, where the President campaigned in a show of support for Republican candidate Dan Bishop in the hotly contested Congressional District 9 special election, which is being held today. Bishop’s Democratic opponent is Dan McCready.

Trump supporter Bryson Gray was interviewed by CBS 17 prior to the start of the rally. Gray explained that he went out and bought the biggest MAGA hat he could find in defiance of his friends who he says told him he shouldn’t support Trump because he’s black:

“I have a lot of friends who tell me that I shouldn’t support Donald Trump because I’m black, which is sort of insane because … I can support whoever the hell I want to support. And then also they told me that I shouldn’t wear the MAGA hat, so I bought the biggest MAGA hat. So it makes it double the importance, so that’s why. ”

Watch the interview segment below:

The Trump War Room Twitter account tweeted out a clip of the video, which has gone viral:

I should note that Messing has gotten involved as of late in the Bishop/McCready race in a show of support for McCready (apparently someone just told her there’s a special election in North Carolina, which has only been in the news for months).

Anyway, hats off (no pun intended) to Gray, who clearly walks to the beat of his own drum by way of refusing to march in lockstep with Democrats just because of his skin color.

Election Day in North Carolina: Last midterm, or first 2020 contest?

Westlake Legal Group bishop-mccready Election Day in North Carolina: Last midterm, or first 2020 contest? walter jones The Blog Special Elections North Carolina Leslie McCrae Dowless Dan McCready Dan Bishop

By tomorrow, one political party will be spiking the football — while the other insists that special elections mean nothing. North Carolinians in two congressional districts head to the polls today to fill two empty House seats. The contest in NC-03 to replace the late Republican Walter Jones isn’t expected to be competitive, but everyone has their eye on the do-over in NC-09:

As the Democratic presidential circus continues to steal national headlines, voters are going to the polls for special elections in two longtime Republican districts — one because election fraud invalidated last year’s result and the other because the sitting congressman died.

The outcome of North Carolina’s competitive 9th District election — which is a redo of last fall’s race with a new GOP nominee — will shape the political discussion in the nation’s capital just as lawmakers are returning from their late-summer recess.

Recent polls have shown Democrat Dan McCready either narrowly leading or tied with Republican state Sen. Dan Bishop, the sponsor of the state’s controversial “bathroom bill.” A McCready victory would increase the net number of seats Republicans need to retake the House in 2020 from 19 to 20. That deficit could further depress GOP members already considering retirement as they contemplate another term in the minority.

Even if McCready comes close and fails, the GOP outside spending needed to defend a district that President Donald Trump carried by 12 points in 2016 harks back to special House elections in 2017, when angst about the president helped Democrats narrow their margins in a number of districts, ultimately foreshadowing the enthusiasm that helped them win the House last year.

The district left open by Jones’ death is solidly Republicans and not viewed as a transitional district. It has a Cook Index of R+12 and Trump won it by 23 points three years ago. State representative Greg Murphy is cut from the mold of the House Freedom Caucus, whose leaders Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan have strongly endorsed him. Murphy raised less than a million dollars for this contest, but he’s up against former mayor Allen Thomas, a Democrat who raised even less money.

It’s so Republican that Jones ran unopposed in 2018 despite Democrats gaining momentum in the midterms; Jones won it by almost 35 points in 2016 and routinely won 63% or more of the vote in his previous six elections as well. Analysts will look at the GOP’s margin of victory to determine whether they should have any concerns, but any dip in it will almost certainly be written off to special-election mechanics and the loss of an incumbent.

The results in NC-09, however, will be much more meaningful as a harbinger for 2020. Trump and Mike Pence made sure of that by holding a rally for Bishop last night, cementing the impression that the special election will be a referendum on his performance:

President Trump went down to Dixie again in hopes of salvaging a North Carolina Congressional seat where a GOP candidate is locked in a tight special election battle.

Trump rallied a #MAGA crowd of thousands in Fayetteville Monday hours before polls opened Tuesday in the Ninth Congressional district race that is shaping up as a referendum on the president’s tumultuous first term. …

Vice President Mike Pence has also stumped for Bishop in an effort to boost turnout among his evangelical Christian base.

Trump kept up the effort with this all-caps reminder on Twitter:

Worth noting: NC-09 has a Cook Index of R+8, but the 2018 election turned into a roller coaster for the GOP anyway. Mark Harris barely unseated incumbent Robert Pittenger with the help of contractor Leslie McRae Dowless, who then helped Harris barely beat McCready in the general election by 905 votes. However, it turned out that Dowless used illegal ballot harvesting in both the primary and the general election, and the entire result had to be thrown out.

Trump and Pence are betting that the rally and Bishop’s emergence as a “clean” nominee will reboot the district back to its Republican persuasion. A Democrat hasn’t won NC-09 since JFK got elected in 1960. Pittenger won his 2016 re-election bid by more than 16 points in 2016. This should not be a close election, so if McCready wins, it’s likely to be viewed as evidence that Democrats’ midterm momentum still exists. If Bishop wins — especially be a larger margin — then it will be portrayed by the GOP as a sign that the 2020 election will have Trumpmentum instead.

NC Democratic Congressional Candidate Bizarrely Equates Being Called a “Clown” to a White Supremacist Slur

Screen grab from the “Clowns” ad via North Carolina 9th Congressional District Republican candidate Dan Bishop’s You Tube page.

It seems like just about every week we are learning from Democrats about new words Republicans are not allowed to use because they are either triggering to liberals or allegedly are tools of various hate groups and what not.

This week has been no exception.

Dan Bishop, who is the Republican candidate in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District race, released an ad over the weekend called “Clowns” in which his Democratic opponent Dan McCready and some of the more liberal members of Congress – including The Squad – are portrayed as clowns:

“They hate President Trump more than they love America,” the narrator says in the 30-second spot as the video pans first to Pelosi and then Ocasio-Cortez.

The video also shows AOC and fellow squad member Omar while the narrator says the Democrats are pushing for “open borders and sanctuary cities.”

The ad then slams the Democrats for pushing “taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants” while showing the clown faces of Sanders and Tlaib.

“They’re not funny. They’re downright scary. I’ll go to Congress and fight these clowns for you ….. it’s time to take the air out of these clowns,” says Bishop, who also appears in the ad.

Watch the ad below:

Bishop, who is a North Carolina state senator, ran a similar ad in the primary earlier this year featuring the same cast of Congressional Democrats.

The Daily Kos being the fever swamp that it is reacted to the ad by suggesting being called a “clown” was a tool of white supremacy, which likely was new news to every single person who read the article:

But it’s not just a particularly lame joke. It turns out there’s a disturbing genesis. Jared Holt, one of the tireless folks at Right Wing Watch, reported in April that white supremacists have begun adopting a version of the infamous far-right “Pepe the Frog” meme decked out in clown garb that they call “Honkler,” to symbolize “their exasperation over an imagined state of collapse in the Western hemisphere that they largely blame on immigrants and minority groups.”

The Forward’s Aiden Pink explained further, “While some users depict themselves as clowns who are ‘in’ on the ‘joke’ of the alleged downfall of white society in a multiracial country, others have targeted their supposed enemies by depicting them as clowns.”

Unhinged staff writer David Nir concluded by saying that Bishop was still complicit in the rise of white supremacy even if he didn’t know about this alleged “clown” trend among white supremacist groups:

Whether or not Bishop understands the significance of his “clown” slurs, the propagation of this meme from the cesspools of the internet directly to the highest levels of Republican power shows just how in thrall to the far-right today’s GOP is.

McCready, a Marine and Iraq war veteran, tweeted out a link to the article, stating “My God, we are better than this”:

Maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t him retweeting out that nonsense kinda sorta prove that McCready indeed is a bit of a clown?

Think about it. How many times have Democrats called Republicans clowns in the past? Mary at Legal Insurrection documented numerous instances as did Alex Griswold at the Free Beacon. Were those Democrats tools of the white supremacy?

Bishop himself reacted to McCready’s tweet by continuing to use the word, and warning Ronald McDonald to be very careful:

Heh.

The special election to fill the vacant Congressional seat will be held on September 10th. For background on why the special election was called, click here.

Dem in Contested NC House Race Says He Believes Omar’s Comments Were Anti-Semitic, Gets Blasted

Yesterday, I wrote about the news that broke this week about Democrat Dan McCready’s quiet refunding in late March of a $2,000 donation he received from Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) in November.

McCready is the Democratic candidate in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, the only remaining House race from 2018 that has not yet been decided. A new primary will be held in May and a special election will be held in September after absentee ballot fraud was discovered that benefited the original Republican candidate in the race – Mark Harris.

Harris, who denied knowing anything about the absentee ballot fraud, will not run for the seat again.

McCready took to the Twitter machine last night to explain his decision to refund Omar’s donation. First by asserting that he believed some of her remarks had indeed been anti-Semitical:

… and then condemning any “hateful rhetoric” that she says has been directed towards her in recent weeks:

The thread was seriously ratio’d, with the vast majority of the nearly 1000 responses it has received as of this writing criticizing his decision:

Source: Twitter.

Some called McCready, who is a Marine Corps veteran who fought in the post-9/11 Iraq war, a “coward” for his stance.

In addition to AOC’s Justice Dems BFF Waleed Shahid weighing in yesterday to express his disappointment with McCready, one prominent officer from the North Carolina Democratic Party shared her disgust in two tweets:

Nida Allam is the party’s 3rd Vice Chair. No one else from the official state party has given a public statement on the issue (and I doubt our left-leaning political media here has even bothered to ask).

It remains to be seen if this issue hurts McCready’s campaign over the next several months. Even if the vast majority of the criticism he’s gotten is from people outside of the 9th District, some of those critics could influence others to not donate to his campaign, or press for refunds of their own donations to it.

Democrats really want this seat, especially after what was discovered in the aftermath of the November election. It’s been a reliably Republican seat for decades, but Democrats like their odds this time around.

We shall see.

While most Democrats have stood behind Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) over the last few months in spite of her various anti-Semitic comments, one quietly went a different way to show his disappointment with the freshman Congresswoman.

The Hill reports:

Dan McCready, the Democratic candidate in the hotly contested House race for North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, refunded a donation from Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-Minn.) campaign last month, Federal Election Commission filings show.

Omar’s campaign initially donated $2,000 to McCready’s campaign on Nov. 6. The total was refunded on March 30, filings show.

“Dan feels strongly that there is no place for divisiveness in our politics. Our campaign is focused on bringing people together. As such, Dan felt it was appropriate to return the donation from then-candidate Omar,” McCready campaign spokesman Aaron Simpson said in a statement to The Hill.

McCready conceded his own race the day after the election, but would later take back his concession after the NC Board of Elections refused to certify the election over suspicions regarding alleged absentee ballot tampering that benefited Republican Mark Harris’s campaign:

The Harris campaign hired Cornelius-based political consultant Red Dome Group and paid them almost $430,000. Andy Yates, the founder and head of Red Dome, has said the firm hired Bladen political operative McCrae Dowless as an independent contractor. Dowless is alleged to have run an absentee-ballot-collecting operation that benefited Harris.

Dowless has since been indicted, and Harris denied knowing about any alleged wrongdoing. A special election will be held later this year for that seat, and will include a new primary (in May). Harris will not run again, but McCready will and there are numerous candidates on the Republican side vying for the nomination in the competitive district.

As far as McCready’s refund of Omar’s donation goes, as it turns out he’s not the only one:

Up in D.C., the conservative Free Beacon has pointed to a $2,000 campaign contribution that U.S. Rep. Illhan Omar, D-Minn., reported making to fellow freshman Democrat Lucy McBath of Marietta.

The website noted that McBath did not report the contribution – which is true. The McBath campaign told us this morning that the contribution was not accepted.

[…]

McBath’s rejection of the donation is more important than it may sound. The Sixth District has a significant Jewish population – particularly in Sandy Springs and east Cobb County.

One of the Republicans running against McCready – state Senator Dan Bishop – had this response to the news that the Democrat returned her donation:

He’s right. Omar’s anti-Semitism was known well before the election, yet McCready accepted the donation anyway.

As of this writing, a quick scan on Twitter showed a few McCready Democrats grumbling about his move, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Justice Dem comrade Waleed Shahid:

That said, don’t expect much of any criticism from official Democratic channels. After the discovery of Dowless’s absentee ballot fraud and the other revelations that came later, Democrats like their chances in this race and feel McCready will win the special election in the fall. If he does, it would be considered a Democratic pick-up (Republican Robert Pittenger previously held the seat).
