Come on, Democrats, you have to enforce the border, says …

Westlake Legal Group holder-borders Come on, Democrats, you have to enforce the border, says … The Blog open borders Joe Biden Illegal Immigration Eric Holder David Axelrod borders 2020 Democrat candidates

Since when did Eric Holder and David Axelrod become … Republicans? This fun exchange between two Obama administration officials took place over the weekend but is clearly worth a backward glance or two. In a segment with Axelrod on CNN’s Axe Files, the former attorney general scoffed at the near-universal position adopted by Democratic presidential candidates for decriminalizing illegal border crossings.

“I don’t think that’s right,” Holder responded when asked about making illegal crossings a civil rather than criminal offense:

“The emphasis there was on people who had criminal records, people who posed a danger, a public safety risk,” Holder, who served under former President Obama, said of the previous administration’s policy in a CNN interview released Saturday.

“Democrats have to understand that … borders mean something,” he added.

Holder expressed disagreement with a proposal embraced by some Democratic presidential candidates to make illegally entering the U.S. a civil offense rather than a criminal offense.

“No, I don’t think that’s right,” he said. “The law that is on the books has been there for about 100 years or so.”

“It might send the wrong signal. But it would certainly take a tool away from the Justice Department that it might to use,” Holder added.

All this prompts an urgent question: Who will be the first Democratic presidential contender to call Holder a racist? My money’s on Julián Castro, but Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke might be a close second. All kidding aside, when people speculated that Holder might run for office himself, they assumed he would run as the progressive’s progressive. Suddenly, even Eric Holder thinks Democrats have lost their minds on open borders. And so does David Axelrod, apparently, although Axe has always been more pragmatic than ideological.

Holder’s not doing this to launch a late-hour run for the nomination, so it’s clear that he and Axelrod want to warn their fellow Democrats to pull it back. Might this be aimed most particularly at former fellow White House alum Joe Biden? The veep has been sounding pretty radical on borders lately — and pretty confused, too, claiming that his administration didn’t lock people in cages when they very much did so. If anyone should be defending border enforcement, it should be the supposedly moderate candidate, who instead seems intent on proving himself more extreme than Bernie Sanders and more hip than Pete Buttigieg.

Whatever the aim, the message is clear. When Eric Holder tells Democrats that their border policy positions are insane, maybe they should listen up.

As Joe Biden Takes Time off in Delaware, David Axelrod Rips Suggestions His Campaign Events Be Scaled Back

On Thursday, I wrote about reports that some of Joe Biden’s allies were growing increasingly concerned about the number of gaffes he’s made just this month alone. Some of the unnamed allies suggested his campaign consider cutting back on his public appearances to lessen the chances of him making more mistakes.

Here’s a brief recap of what else the allies were saying, via The Hill:

Biden has a tendency to make the blunders late in the day, his allies say, particularly after a long swing on the road, like he had last week in Iowa. They say something needs to be done to give the candidate more down time as the campaign intensifies in the fall.

“He needs to be a strong force on the campaign trail, but he also has to pace himself,” said one ally who has talked to members of the campaign team and others in the broader Biden World about how to move forward.

The ally said it was unclear whether the campaign would make any changes to Biden’s schedule, particularly because Biden was criticized recently for not doing as many events as his Democratic rivals.

Campaign officials for Biden have grasped on to the “Joe being Joe” excuse in recent days in attempting to explain away his gaffes, and have accused the mainstream media of essentially making something out of nothing. One top Biden adviser told CNN this was a “press narrative, not a voter narrative.”

Biden’s press secretary T.J. Ducklo also took a swipe at media coverage of Biden’s flubs earlier this week:

President Barack Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod, who is not shy about weighing in on the Democratic presidential race, on Thursday ripped suggestions that Biden’s schedule load be lightened to avoid the possibility he’d commit another embarrassing flub:

The Biden campaign’s agitation with the press over their focus on his gaffes, and the reports about the advice some allies are giving the campaign about thinning out Biden’s schedule come at a time when the candidate himself is vacationing in his home state of Delaware:

It’s unclear whether Biden’s vacation was scheduled in advance or if it was a decision hastily made in the aftermath of all of the gaffes his made over the last several weeks.

A couple of months ago, President Trump insinuated there might be a more troubling reason why Axelrod’s former boss President Obama was not outright endorsing his former veep for President that went beyond merely not wanting to show favoritism before the primaries even started.

Trump told reporters last week when asked about Biden that he believed the Democratic frontrunner was “not playing with a full deck.” The President told a crowd of supporters in Manchester, New Hampshire Thursday that he would never be able to get away with scaling back his appearances. “If I ever did that it would be over. The fake news would get us.”

CNN Host Grills Pete Buttigieg Over His Abject Failure Among the Black Community

On Friday, a CNN talker noted the failings of a 2020 Democratic hopeful.

Strange day.

“Noted the failings,” that is, where it concerns his popularity among black voters.

Currently, Pete Buttigieg stinks.

The Axe Files’s David Axelrod made the observations during a discussion with news anchor John Berman.

John remarked that the small-town Indiana mayor “absolutely” has no chance to win the presidency without the support of black Americans.”

And he most certainly does not have it.

From Axelrod:

“Absolutely cannot. Absolutely cannot. African-Americans are about a quarter of the Democratic primary electorate. Once you clear those early states of Iowa and New Hampshire, they come into play. And in South Carolina, 60 percent of the voters will be African-American. So, as a practical matter, he has to solve this problem or he’s going to go back to South Bend. And that’s a problem.”

Right. It’s a problem, in part, because he isn’t taking care of business at home: Pete’s vacated his mayoral office to run for president, and some people haven’t appreciated it.

While he was out trying to change jobs in June, a white police officer shot a black man and chaos ensued.

Pete rushed back for damage control, but his town hall turned into YellFest 2019.

Even the gals at The View were unimpressed.

At the time, Joy Behar offered something which, to me, seemed perfectly sensible:

“[I] have this feeling that these guys who are running who are mayors and governors should keep doing their jobs — until they can fix — it’s almost like…when you’re the mayor or a governor, it’s almost like being the father or the mother of the family. And to leave South Bend now and run for president seems like an unfinished job.”

Former Obama Senior Advisor David appears to agree:

“South Bend itself is a bit of a problem for him because even though he has this very far-reaching Douglass Plan to try and fight systemic racism in this country, there are troubling issues back home about police staffing, which African-Americans dropped by half under his watch, and on city contracting, where African-American — where minority businesses have done rather poorly in sharing in the business of the city, even though 40 percent of the city is black and Hispanic. These are questions that I asked him.”

How’s he gonna lead the country if he can’t satisfactorily run South Bend?

Pete’s smaller problems are his bigger problems:

“And, you know, he had a series of issues. He fired a popular black police chief. It was because of an investigation. But, nonetheless, it was a controversial decision. He tore down 1,000 abandoned homes, many of them in poor minority communities, and that was meant to remove blight. But there was quite a bit of resistance because now there are these vacant lots in the community. So, you know, there are a lot of issues that he has to confront there.”

It’s not so often you see CNN downgrade a Democrat.

I wrote a while back that the lead-up to 2020 is gonna be interesting on the other side of the aisle. And so far, it hasn’t disappointed. CNN’s saying a Democratic can’t take care of business with the black citizenry, and AOC and Pelosi are in the ring among other infighting (here and here).

Keep out your popcorn; I think it’s gonna get weirder.

Biden’s Campaign Wraps him in Bubble Wrap

Westlake Legal Group Biden-620x319 Biden’s Campaign Wraps him in Bubble Wrap Politics Old Man Joe Biden gaffes Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story fatigue donald trump democrats democratic primary David Axelrod Candidate Protection Program 2020 election

Joe Biden has been very quiet the last week or so. That’s apparently on purpose as former Obama lackey David Axelrod says Biden’s staff have decided to place him in a “candidate protection program.” While it sounds like he’s an alcoholic being admitted to rehab, it’s actually a plan to shut him up, keep him from looking old, and stop him from committing gaffes.

The Washington Examiner has the report.

Former President Barack Obama’s chief campaign strategist David Axelrod said that Joe Biden’s campaign seems to be trying to protect him from making gaffes or appearing to be too old for the presidency.

Axelrod told the New York Times that he thought the campaign’s strategy of insulating Biden from the press and holding back the famously garrulous former vice president from making any controversial remarks has worked so far, but said the campaign will have to pivot to allow him to be “more venturesome” with his remarks and appearance.

Biden has already gotten in trouble with his treatment of the press. Not by the press themselves of course as they enjoy being battered around by liberals, but right leaning sources did point out that Biden’s behavior would be headline news if a Republican had shoved reporters away.

Axelrod goes on to say that Biden’s campaign is trying to help him avoid fatigue.

“I think they’ve been really, really adroit in the early going,” Axelrod said. “Clearly, they’re trying to do enough to show the flag but not so much that it exposes him to either mistakes or fatigue. But the pace is going to quicken as the race goes on and you can’t keep him in candidate protection program.”

“One of the tests for a guy who’s 76 years old is, ‘Can he handle this?’” Axelrod said, of Biden needing to be more out in the open and visible on the campaign trail.

I noted this several weeks ago during Biden’s official launch speech. He was stumbling and slurring his words and it was only the first day. What’s he going to look like a year from now?

This is Biden’s chief disadvantage against Trump. The President is a machine when it comes to campaigning. He can do rally after rally and he only seems to get more energized. Meanwhile, Biden has essentially went into hiding and it’s only been two weeks. At this rate, he’ll be drooling and needing a walker by the time the summer 2020 campaign season heats up.

As Hillary showed, I don’t think you can hide forever. The former 2016 candidate clearly broke down midway through the general election campaign, collapsing and then cutting her public appearances way back. This likely contributed to her not even visiting Wisconsin, a key state she should would later lose.

Biden is going to have to get out of the witness protection program and start barnstorming soon. If he doesn’t, he won’t even win the Democratic primary. It’s a double edged sword though, as when he does hit the ground running he’s going to look old and commit plenty of gaffes because that’s who he is. As to their current plan, we’ll see if wrapping him in bubble wrap will work out for his handlers.
