Last night I had the great honor to host Red State’s Live Blog of the “Democrats for Trump,” event in Detroit…at least that’s what it ended up being. More on that in a bit. First of all, the really important stuff. Our contest winner last night, for coming closest to accurately predicting the number of times “misogynist/sexist,” was used, is second-time winner, nathankarlen. Once more win, and he will achieve the highly coveted Triple Crown of Red State debate predictions. This honor also comes with the grand prize of being mentioned in one of my columns. Congratulations! Now, on to the debate analysis.

I won’t go into winners and losers (amongst the Democrats). My colleague Joe Cunningham has already and most ably done so here. However, I will claim a winner: President Donald J. Trump. Throughout the entire evening, Democrats would tear into each other on such things as whether or not ObamaCare—-remember that signature achievement of the Obama Era? Then stop to remind us/them of “who the enemy is.”

They also sparred over law enforcement and incarceration, where Tulsi Gabbard had what is now being touted as a breakout monument. She absolutely scorched Kamala Harris for jailing pot smokers, while chuckling abut doing doobies herself; for keeping folks in jail past their sentences—for the free state labor and worst of all, failing to disclose exonerating information that would have freed folks wrongfully convicted.

The best explanation of why the President won last night (aside from the optics of internecine warfare on stage) comes from one of our reader comments. SeanDuncan64 writes (emphasis mine)

So let me get this straight – these folks want to cut fair trade deals using tariffs to protect our sovereignty (Gabbard). They want to get rid of that nasty Obamacare (several). They want to improve the pay and employment for minorities (all of them). They want out of Afghanistan and reinvest the money in making America great again (Gabbard, or all of them?). They want a saner criminal justice system (all of them?). And some of them even want merit-based immigration (Yang).

Are they debating for the Dem primaries, or to see which of them gets to be on Trump’s reelection campaign staff?

Spot on. Optics were bad enough. But the substance that all of them were promoting in one way or another, sounded like Donald J. Trump. Deep down inside, I think they knew that. After each little dustup between the candidates, somebody onstage tried to remind the audience (or maybe themselves) that It’s President Trump they need to be criticizing. All in all, a pretty good night for the President.

On a side note, we did get a few pretty funny comments from our readers. Treksdot wins the award (especially for that killer line 3) for making your humble scribe spew a perfectly good mouthful of single malt onto my keyboard & screen. Again, emphasis mine.

Things I’d rather be doing:
1. Mowing the lawn with nothing but a pair of kid’s safety scissors.
2. Selling life insurance to people at the old folk’s home.
3. Shaving all the hair off my head and stapling a still living raccoon to my skull.

That’s my short take on last night’s event. More to follow on specific issues…not to mention, we’re about due for a tweet from POTUS that will send the Democrats into a tizzy once again.

Thanks to all to participated.

Cory Booker Scolds Democrats for Pitting Democrats Against Each Other…At a Debate

The whole point of a presidential debate is to see who has the most gumption, best record, and sharpest mind. While it can be tedious, it does expose us to certain things that American people may find important. It’s an actual chance for candidates to expose each other’s records in a live setting where without the safety of a controlled narrative.

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, however, seemed taken aback that CNN would do something so heinous as making Democrats battle it out to see who is best qualified to lead the free world.

“The person that’s enjoying this debate most right now is Donald Trump, as we pit Democrats against each other while he is working right now to take away Americans’ health care,” Booker said.

Booker seems to be trying to go for the image of being the sensible one in the room, but it didn’t stop him from tearing into Biden with the rest of the 2020 pack, specifically on immigration. In the end, Booker is just as guilty of creating division amongst the Democrats as everyone else.

Trump’s Communications Director Tim Murtaugh couldn’t help but notice that too.

Booker has struggled to make a name for himself among the Democrats. While he’s highly recognizable, he’s not said or done anything memorable enough to bump is standing in any significant way. He’s constantly pronounced among the winners from debates but continues to put forth lackluster performances and forgettable quotes.

This line about debates making Democrats look like a house divided seem pretty whiney, however. The whole point of the debates is to stand out by being better than your opponent. If Booker is suggesting debates don’t happen and a different forum is crafted where Democrat candidates don’t argue with each other over how to lead the nation, then I’m curious as to how he suggests that happen.

The alternative is just narrative crafting with each Democrat giving a speech about a subject in turn on stage. If that’s the case, then we’re not going to learn much.

More importantly, if Booker is aiming for this kind of thing, then it doesn’t speak well to his willingness to be asked hard questions or come up against opposition. If he wants a kinder, gentler session then he’s not ready for the responsibility of leading the nation against other world powers who won’t be inclined to be gentle and fair.

He definitely won’t get kindness and gentleness from Trump.

In his efforts to look like the level-headed guy in the room, Booker just exposed his hand as a weak candidate.

Mario Lopez Gets Woke In a Hurry After Backlash for His Transgender Comments

Westlake Legal Group woke-620x351 Mario Lopez Gets Woke In a Hurry After Backlash for His Transgender Comments woke twitter Twitchy transphobe Transgenderism Sad Politics online mob mario lopez LGBTQ Front Page Stories Front Page flip flop Featured Story facebook democrats dangerous Crazy children

This is sad to see. Not because I care anything about Mario Lopez, but because it’s more evidence of just how bad of a place we are in.

Yesterday, Lopez found himself in a firestorm after he made some very common sense comments on transgenderism. Namely, that a three year old has no ability to choose their gender and that allowing them to do so is dangerous.

Here are the comments via my RedState colleague, Alex Parker.

“I’m kind of blown away, too. Look — I’m never one to tell anyone how to parent their kids, obviously. … And I would say if you come from a place of love, you really can’t go wrong. But at the same time, my God, if you’re three years old, and you’re saying you’re feeling a certain way or you think you’re a boy or girl or whatever the case may be, I just think it’s dangerous as a parent to make that determination then, ‘Okay, then you’re going to be a boy or girl’ or whatever the case may be. It’s sort of alarming and, my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.”

On what planet is that controversial? This one apparently.

The online mob absolutely filleted him as a “transphobe” for speaking simple truth about the inability of small children to decide they are the opposite gender, never mind the issues with adults who entertain such.

What’d Lopez do? He got woke in a hurry.

“The comments I made were ignorant and insensitive, and I now have a deeper understanding of how hurtful they were,” Lopez said in a statement. “I have been and always will be an ardent supporter of the LGBTQ community, and I am going to use this opportunity to better educate myself. Moving forward I will be more informed and thoughtful.”

Lopez did just that though. Perhaps he’ll now fade into obscurity again, which is probably what he wants. He’s got a lively hood to protect after all.

It’s still a sad testament to our current society that you can’t even speak nominal truth about the differences in gender, even dealing with small children, without inviting a mob of left-wingers trying to destroy you. What’s more frustrating in this case is that we know radical positions on transgenderism are not actually majority opinions. The support for such is made to seem much larger by a cultural onslaught of pseudo-science and positive press coverage.

I keep thinking this has to stop at some point. There has to be a tipping point where most of the country just says “enough, this is ridiculous.” I’m not so sure though given how easy it is to manipulate public perception these days and the lobbies for these different social justice issues are only growing stronger.

Video: Biden Sweeps Gillibrand’s Legs Out From Under Her On Women as Crowd Cheers

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has been running as the candidate looking after women and using that as her sword as well as her shield.

Thinking that she had found a weakness in former VP Joe Biden’s armor when it came to the fairer sex, Gillibrand launched after Biden’s history of failure with women. To put it bluntly, it didn’t go well for Gillibrand. Biden recounted his history of support for women but immediately turned it on Gillibrand, reminding her that she herself had praised him for his support of women throughout his career.

Just to make sure his correction had some teeth to it, Biden didn’t stop there. Gillibrand must have forgotten that she’s dealing with a seasoned pro, as Biden effortlessly swept Gillibrand’s legs out from under her with a single comment.

“I don’t know what happened except you’re now running for president,” said Biden.

The crowd erupted in cheers as Gillibrand struggled to respond. When she did finally get something to come back at Biden with, the moderators were cutting her off.

It was not a good look for Gillibrand.

Then again, Gillibrand hasn’t been looking good from the start. At best, she’s been something of a tag-a-long candidate who’s best bet at this point is to obtain a cabinet position. Gillibrand has been polling at 0 percent despite being recognized by seven in ten Americans.

This is seen on the debate stage as well. She’s often forgotten the moment the camera leaves her. Her attack on Biden was her chance to try to make a name for herself and wiggle her way out of obscurity. The problem is that Gillibrand chose a specialty for her platform that all the others have invested some time in as well, being that Democrats and feminism are often bedfellows. You can bet that every politician on that stage has some kind of record to show in supporting women.

Gillibrand isn’t bringing anything effective to the fight, and as such was quickly put down by Biden who is also more clever and experienced than she is.

At this point, Gillibrand is likely done save for a miracle.

Kamala Harris Got Wrecked Last Night at the Dem Debate

Kamala Harris is an interesting political case. Not because she herself is actually interesting, but because of how she’s been so totally manufactured as a candidate. She is consistently painted as prize fighting politician in the media, always just on the prefaces of taking over the Democratic primary. In reality, she continues to languish in fourth place.

Take this comment after the debate last night from Van Jones on CNN.

What has Kamala Harris done to show that she’s so vicious that no one can “lay a glove on her?”

If you’ll recall after the last debate, her myth only grew, with many pundits predicting she’d overtake Joe Biden. Even the gambling sites were convinced, placing her at the top of the odds to be the nominee.

Here’s what I wrote at the time in response to all the hype.

With all due respect to the top oddsmakers, that’s incredibly stupid. Debates rarely have such an dramatic effect so as to boost someone languishing in the mid single digits above a guy who’s pushing 40%. In this case, it was a 2 minute exchange. Harris did not dominate the rest of the debate and actually may have alienated some voters by tacking so far left.

Harris, despite all the media fawning and selfies with Mika, is still a sucker’s bet at this point.

It’s all fun and games when it’s a layup on racial issues and Harris gets to savage a barely lucid Joe Biden. Things get tougher when the attacks start coming back at you though and that’s exactly what happened last night.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, mostly known for her controversial views on Bashar Assad, is playing a role similar to Chris Christie in 2016. She knows her chances are extremely low so the plan is not to take down the frontrunner but to make herself attractive as an official in a Biden administration. That means going after someone like Harris and Gabbard did it masterfully in front of 10 million people.

I highly encourage you to watch the clip. You aren’t going to get a sense of how bad it was unless you do. Here’s a description though, via The Washington Examiner.

Clearly, Gabbard had done her homework, and she absolutely dragged Harris for her abysmal record as California attorney general. During her time in office, Harris took draconian stances on issues of criminal justice, enforcing such merciless policies and displaying such ruthless ambition that “Kamala the cop” has become a common criticism of the candidate.

Gabbard attacked Harris for having locked up thousands of people for mere marijuana possession and laughing about it when asked whether she had smoked pot herself. The congresswoman piled onto Harris, adding on a reference to her office’s shameful move to keep people locked up to preserve “cheap labor for the state of California.”

This is all true, and here are the receipts. But Gabbard didn’t stop there.

The Hawaii congresswoman also called out Harris for the fact that while attorney general, she fought to keep people incarcerated despite exonerating evidence and fought to preserve the unfair system of cash bail.

Gabbard hit Harris on all points, including her targeting of parents for truancy violations of their children. While those of us on the Republican side may actually agree with some of Harris’ tougher stances before she tried to paint transform herself into a social justice warrior, the point here is political, not ideological. In a Democratic primary, what Gabbard did was brutally effective. The left’s views on criminal justice are getting more and more radical by the day.

The image of “Harris the cop” is not the meme the former California AG wants floating around. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to most of the Democrat base.

Another thing this attack did was shield Biden from one of his biggest weaknesses, that being that he was not a crazy person in the 90s and supported measures to bring down skyrocketing crime rates (which worked BTW). Harris has tried to go after the former VP on that at times, but with her record so thoroughly vetted on national TV, there’s noway she can do so now without inviting a much stronger counter punch.

Harris was exposed last night. She’s mechanical, way too rehearsed, and is deeply unlikable. A consummate politician, and I mean that in the most negative connotation. Tulsi Gabbard is not a heavy weight herself, but she left Harris stammering last night, unable to respond in any effective fashion.

I haven’t bought into Harris from the beginning and nothing I saw last night has changed my mind.

Trump Announces the Country’s New Small Business Administration Chief, and It Defies All We’ve Learned

Here’s a real head-scratcher.

On Thursday, Donald Trump will nominate U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza as the new leader of the Small Business Administration.

Jovita, if confirmed by the Senate, will replace Linda McMahon — co-founder (along with her husband, Vince) of World Wrestling Entertainment.

Last week, Linda announced she was stepping down.

The President revealed Jovita’s nomination by tweet:

“Jovita was a great Treasurer of the United States – and I look forward to her joining my Cabinet!”

The confusing part of the whole thing is that we’ve had shoved into our brains for over three years now the idea that planetary business mogul Donald J. Trump is so breathtakingly petty and immature — dare I say, droolingly moronic — that he sits around gritting his teeth and judging everyone according to the color of their skin. When not attacking women, that is — verbally, sexually, and legislatively (here).

We all know he absolutely hates “brown people.”

And women? No way.

Yet:

But how??

Winners And Losers Of The Democratic Debate (Part Two)

Westlake Legal Group biden-pointing-620x317 Winners And Losers Of The Democratic Debate (Part Two) Tusli Gabbard Michael Bennet Kirsten Gillibrand kamala harris Julian Castro Joe Biden Jay Inslee Front Page Stories Featured Story democrats debate Corey Booker CNN Bill de Blasio Andrew Yang Allow Media Exception 2020

Former Vice President Joe Biden mimics shooting a gun as he speaks at the Chuck Hagel Forum in Global Leadership, on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, in Omaha, Neb., Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019. (AP Photo/Nati Harnik)

For the second night of CNN’s debate, we saw more candidates going for the throat – particularly Joe Biden’s – and more on policy than we saw in the first night. Biden was joined on stage by Kamala Harris, Corey Booker, Tulsi Gabbard, Andrew Yang, Michael Bennet, Jay Inslee, Kirsten Gillibrand, Julian Castro, and Bill de Blasio, and the candidates were again given the chance to not only state their case, but encouraged to go after each other. And they did with gusto.

Here are the winners and losers in the second night of CNN’s Democratic debate. Again, this is objectively analyzed and not based on conservative ideals.

Winners: Tulsi Gabbard, Andrew Yang, Joe Biden

First up, Andrew Yang has been a surprising force these last two debates. He has shown up, and like Marianne Williamson last night, has had to combat a lack of screen time in order to thrive. I don’t think his performance outshines Williamson’s from the previous night, but people are starting to recongize him. You’ll be seeing more of him, and I think that he brings something new to the debates that the Democrats will have to address.

Tulsi Gabbard had a strong night. She absolutely gutted Kamala Harris on her record as a prosecutor, and Harris absolutely refused to acknowledge the points directly, instead pointing to vague “civil rights reforms” she pushed while she was attorney general in California. But Gabbard would not let her off the hook and came off looking so much better for it. Her time spent as a member of the military also gave her a unique perspective among the candidates, and I think she came across very, very well. Like Booker, I don’t know how much of a bounce she’ll get here, because she is not the most progressive, and she has openly run as a moderate.

The clear winner tonight, though, is Joe Biden. The man has been at the top of the polls for two debates, and last time did not seem prepared. Clearly, he did his homework for tonight because he parried attacks from both Harris and Gillibrand, and he looked well-rehearsed in doing so. Look for him to stay at the top of the polls after this.

Losers: Kamala Harris, Bill de Blasio, Kirsten Gillibrand

The biggest loser tonight was Kamala Harris, who seemed so ready and composed last debate but was slaughtered by Gabbard and completely side-stepped by Biden. She came across as the student who doesn’t study for the final exam because she thinks she’s so smart, but subsequently fails it because she wasn’t prepared. She failed to just come across as prepared, and there were people cheering against her as a result. That’s not a good look for her.

Gillibrand tried so very hard to land a super feminist point against Biden and he destroyed her on it. In typical Gillibrand style, she fell on her face trying to make a point. It was almost as embarrassing as Bill de Blasio getting completely shut down by Don Lemon (Note: I hope de Blasio loses solely because he made me cheer for Don Lemon). I can’t think of a Democrat with a debate performance more embarrassing than these two had tonight.

Also-Rans: Julian Castro, Jay Inslee, Michael Bennet, Corey Booker

There is not much to say about these four, because they are still just not registering. Their talking points don’t land, and while they each have something Democrats inherently like, they can’t turn that quality into a winning campaign. If any or all of these four were to drop out, it wouldn’t really do much to shake up the race.

Of the four, Booker had probably the best night. He is getting better at trying to connect with voters from the debate stage, but he’s still not able to make those connections completely, and I don’t see that changing. Inslee benefitted from more time on the screen, and took advantage of the opportunity, but he’s a one-trick pony and can’t show a range of policy necessary to take on anyone else long term.

Last night’s debate was the more interesting, more memorable debate and featured better performances across the board. However, it still seems far more likely that we saw the 2020 Democratic nominee tonight. Still, with the stage getting smaller and smaller as the primary goes on, one thing we know is that anything can still happen.

BREAKING: James Comey Referred for Prosecution, DOJ Responds

According to sources, via The Hill, James Comey was referred for prosecution by IG Horowitz in his yet to be released report on the handling of the Trump-Russia investigation.

Inspector General (IG) Michael Horowitz’s team referred Comey for possible prosecution under the classified information protection laws, but Department of Justice (DOJ) prosecutors working for Attorney General William Barr reportedly have decided to decline prosecution – a decision that’s likely to upset Comey’s conservative critics.

Yes, you read that right. He was referred for prosecution but won’t be prosecuted because of a lack of intent despite the fact that the report itself is said to fillet him for his actions.

This is the same James Comey who publicly said he leaked the memos on purpose to get a special counsel appointed. Apparently, that doesn’t qualify as intent somehow.

As many of us have speculated for years, there will be no justice here because no one in D.C. ever pays for their actions. Comey is part of the protected class and is treated as such.

There is a chance the sources are wrong here about prosecution, but that’s unlikely.

It never fails.

Someone finds what they think is a juicy “gotcha” on someone they don’t like, and they throw it on social media to “inform” everyone of the “shocking” revelation.

It gets tons of likes/RTs/hearts, etc.

But oftentimes the “gotcha” is either not true or highly deceptive, not telling the full picture.

Such was the case this morning when a self-proclaimed “#Resist” Twitter user by the name of Akki tweeted out net worth figures for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in order to insinuate something sinister was behind the sharp rise in the numbers. Here’s what he tweeted:

As of this writing, his tweet has nearly 11,300 retweets and nearly 24,000 likes.

Liberal New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof saw the tweet and quote RT’d it, asking for comment from the Senator:

That tweet has over to 1,800 retweets and 4,300 likes.

The only problem with the insinuation that McConnell got rich from nefarious means is that it’s not true:

From that Snopes piece:

That influx was the result of an inheritance his wife received upon the death of her mother, and that information has been part of public discourse since 2014, when it became campaign fodder for McConnell’s Democratic opponent, Allison Lundergan Grimes:

[…]

Although the meme and the campaign ad upon which it was likely based were set up to make it seem as if McConnell’s wealth increase were the result of his role in the Senate and thus involved unethical or illegal activities, most of his net worth actually derives from his wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, who hails from a wealthy business family and married McConnell in 1993.

Instead of issuing a correction of his own, Kristof simply retweeted Howard’s tweet.

In contrast to the thousands of RTs and likes both Akki and Kristof received for their tweets, Howard’s currently has a mere 6 retweets and 39 likes.

To make the fake news even worse, neither “Akki” nor Kristof have deleted their original tweets.

Team Mitch roasted the columnist for it:

I’ve said it a million times: If you get something wrong on social media, don’t just amplify someone’s correction (or your own), delete your original post.

It’s what an honest person would do, anyway.
