AOC Tangles With Rick Scott About Sarcasm, Socialism, and Sexism

Just a few weeks ago, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed she was cutting back on social media for mental health reasons, but that didn’t stop her from tangling with Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) on Twitter yesterday.

It all started when Scott tweeted about a proposal from Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), one of the approximately 7,135,804 Democrats currently running for the 2020 presidential nomination, to create a federal gun registry.

Scott slammed the idea as “terrible” and noted “[t]his would be scary if Booker had any chance of becoming President,” a perhaps harsh but likely accurate comment considering the jam-packed clown car that is the Democrats’ primary at the moment.

Next, he tweeted a sarcastic quip, pondering if the Democrats would next endeavor to require Americans to register if they owned any sharp knives, and then, “Maybe @AOC will make us register every time we buy meat as part of her #GreenNewDeal.”

Ocasio-Cortez did not appreciate Scott making fun of her Green New Deal and attacked Scott for lacking “critical thinking” and “honesty,” and claiming that if he were a female candidate, “maybe you’d be called ‘unlikeable,’ ‘crazy,’ or ‘uninformed.’”

Scott fired right back, mocking her for failing to “understand sarcasm,” as well as pointing out that “America rejects socialism and will continue to do so.”

First of all, Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal is so unpopular even among her fellow Democrats that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has publicly voiced her lack of enthusiasm for it, making it very clear she had little interest in expending her political capital to help it advance. When Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called the Democrats’ bluff and put up the Green New Deal for a vote, the majority of the Senate Democrats voted “present” rather than take a risk of going on the record supporting the bill.

The simple fact is that the Green New Deal is an unworkable set of legislative proposals that would impose restrictions far more extreme than Americans are willing to accept, and the savvier Congressional Democrats who value their own re-elections know that.

Scott knows AOC’s Green New Deal doesn’t actually require people to register when they buy a hamburger, but he was making a larger point about how ridiculous and unwieldy some of the proposals are, and how unpopular socialism actually is.

That’s called sarcasm.

Now, I don’t actually share the belief of some of AOC’s critics that she’s an idiot. Getting elected to Congress at such a young age — especially by first knocking out an incumbent of your own party — is no simple task.

But her constant frenzied habit of taking overly seriously every word from her critics, while insisting that her own foibles be viewed through the most generously forgiving of lenses, is a gimmick that became tiring long ago.

Even worse was AOC’s attempt to paint Scott’s criticism as some sort of sexism.

Scott wasn’t commenting on her hairstyle, physical appearance, clothing style, voice, or anything at all related to her being a woman. He was criticizing a legislative proposal she had promoted.

If you can’t handle people criticizing your bills, then maybe you aren’t tough enough to be in Congress. Is it sexist if I question whether she’s tough enough? Again, I actually think she is, and this is just political theater from her, but it has gotten ridiculous seeing her cry sexism every time she’s criticized.

It’s specifically ridiculous regarding Scott to try to claim there’s some sort of inherent sexism in calling a politician “unlikeable.”

Scott famously refused to meet with any of the editorial boards of the newspapers around Florida when he first ran for governor in 2010. They were annoyed by his snub, and all endorsed his opponent. A similar pattern repeated itself for his 2014 reelection campaign and his 2018 campaign for Senate.

Scott’s been repeatedly compared to Voldemort, the villainous wizard from the Harry Potter books and movies, and editorial cartoonists have been savaging him for nearly a decade now.

Not. Everything. Is. Sexism.

Once again, I don’t think she’s actually an idiot. She just seems to like playing one on Twitter.

Try as former VP and current 2020 hopeful Joe Biden might, there is no getting away from the “creepy uncle” image that he’s inadvertently crafted for himself. The internet being the internet, a parody site for Biden’s creepy exploits popped up, and it seems to be far more popular on Google than Biden’s 2020 page itself.

The parody site is chock full of images and clips of Biden doing what he’s famous for: leaning in from behind women and girls with his face uncomfortably close to theirs. It’s also laced with plenty of innuendo:

Uncle Joe is back and ready to take a hands-on approach to America’s problems! Joe Biden has a good feel for the American people and knows exactly what they really want deep down. He’s happy to open up and reveal himself to voters and will give a pounding to anybody who gets in his way!

The site also gives a rundown of Biden’s past exploits, including his yes vote for the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, his Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 which promoted mass incarceration.

The site also puts down a few quotes from the former VP himself, including the famous one about Obama that came off as more than a little degrading toward black people.

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” reads the quote on the site.

Even better, the site actually sells anti-Biden t-shirts.

While this may be all fun and games for us, for Biden’s team it’s a great loss. Not just because Biden’s actual 2020 site is being passed on by, but due to the fact that it spent more money than other campaigns to make the site look as good as possible according to CNBC:

The problem has also emerged despite the Biden campaign’s prolific spending on Google.

An online tracker maintained by the progressive digital advertising firm ACRONYM shows the Biden campaign has spent more than $360,000 on Google platforms, racking up more spending on the site than all the other candidates in the crowded field except Sen. Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana.

While his official campaign page is absent, Google does prominently display an official Biden advertisement for Biden-related searches.

Google hasn’t done anything to change the standing as of yet, but it just goes to show that the internet is the new wild west. You know never what’s going to happen.

Joy Behar and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) debate on ‘The View’ – 5/6/19. Screen grab via ABC.

On Monday, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) went into the lion’s den better known as ABC‘s “The View” program to discuss a variety of topics, including illegal immigration, his criticisms of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5), and rhetoric that President Trump uses that the co-hosts find offensive.

One of the highlights of the segment for me was Crenshaw’s calm but clear debunking of the false claim that Trump said white supremacists at the Charlottesville riots were “fine people.”

Newsbusters reports:

Finally, the View producers graciously let Meghan McCain get one conservative question in, asking why Democrats were reluctant to call out Rep. Ilhan Omar.

He boiled it down to partisan politics, which he noted also happens with his own party. Before he or McCain could elaborate, Joy Behar jumped in to defend Omar and bring the criticism back to Trump:

JOY BEHAR: I would be remiss if I didn’t bring up the fact that she’s a new congresswoman. On the right what we have is the President of the United States in Charlottesville saying that there are good people on both sides and people were yelling Jews will not replace us. They’re not good people on both sides–

CRENSHAW: Well in that same sentence when he said that he also said I’m definitely not referring to white nationalists.

BEHAR: Why do you apologize for him? He’s ridiculous! [rolls eyes]

CRENSHAW: You have to read to exactly what he said.

SUNNY HOSTIN: It was not in the same sentence. It was actually in a statement two days later.

CRENSHAW: No, it wasn’t. No it wasn’t.

Watch their back and forth in the video clip below:

The media-driven lies about Trump’s Charlottesville remarks have been debunked many times, yet the myth still persists. Thankfully, Crenshaw didn’t give in on the point as Behar and some of the other co-hosts continued to try and keep peddling the false claim.

Sen. Ted Cruz has been on a bit of a roll since his re-election win over Robert O’Rourke last year and the debut of his lumberjack beard. He has expanded his Jedi training to include not just ticking off people in Washington D.C. but also getting actors who are no longer in the limelight peeved.

This has been truly glorious to watch.

The latest example comes from Fox News via twitter, where former Seinfeld “comic” Jason Alexander, took umbrage with Sen. Cruz comment about one of  Cruz’s Senate colleagues POTUS campaign being a lil vapid.

From Fox News

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, last week invoked a Seinfeld line in a dig at 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., but days later, Jason Alexander, the actor who played George Costanza on the show, took issue with Cruz.

On Thursday, Cruz tweeted that Bennet’s campaign is a “Seinfeld campaign—about nothing,” in a reference to the show’s running joke that it essentially had no plot. The show ran from 1989 to 1998 and is seen as one of the most beloved series ever.

Cruz tweeted this on Thursday, May 2nd…

Michael Bennet’s campaign is a Seinfeld campaign—about nothing—that typifies the Left’s empty rage in 2020. In a decade in the Senate, he’s done very little…but he did stomp his foot & yell at me on Senate floor (which he features in fundraising emails).

Three days later Alexander came up with this gem

So @SenTedCruz has called @SenatorBennet a “Seinfeld campaign”, claiming it’s about nothing. I’ve met Bennett. He is a great man and real choice for POTUS. As for Cruz – the jerk store called and they’re running out of you. I say, the faster the better.

Good one Costanza. You are really showing your wit responding with a line someone else wrote for you in a show about nada. Thankfully for America, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David did the writing on the show and you gurgled your way through their writing.

The only thing Ted Cruz was pointing out was that Michael Bennet’s Presidential run looks a bit bleak. Which it is. Just because Constanza has met him and thinks the Senator from Colorado is a nice guy, doesn’t mean his campaign is NOT about nothing and pretty boring. Just brushing up on Bennets time in the Senate would confirm this.

Constanza is probably too busy to look at policy material or other icky stuff like that being he is trying to become a world-class poker player. Just google some of those stellar results.

So congrats to Ted Cruz for his win last year against Robert, for keeping D.C. on its toes and getting people who were once in a show about nothing crying about something small. You are on a roll Senator.

Keep. It. Up.

I debated whether or not this was even worth writing about, but after reading this over and over again, I realized there is a larger point that has to be made here.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had no idea until last night what a garbage disposal was or what it was for. She felt it was an important-enough discovery to share with her followers on Instagram – which in and of itself is curious, because she vowed to ease up on using social media because it is a “public health risk.”

If you don’t believe she would actually do this, there is proof.

It should be noted that Elaine Godfrey is not a member of a right-leaning media outlet that is hellbent on mocking AOC. She is a politics reporter for The Atlantic, which is notably not right-leaning.

AOC will get mocked for this, and possibly rightly so. She has two types of defenders out there. The first one are out in force saying “Well, ACTUALLY, there are very few homes in New York City that even have garbage disposals!” There are several others saying “I also never had one until I moved to D.C.”

However, as mock-worthy as it is, there is a much larger point that has to be made regarding this particular revelation of hers: She wants us to know that she knows what is best for the country and the world, but as her defenders are unintentionally pointing out, she has no experience in either.

Washington D.C. and New York City are not America. They are not the world. There are experiences that you have to have in order to make a judgment on something. That’s one of the more aggravating things about modern journalists, by the way, who have little real-world experience but write and preach from their newsprint about what is right and wrong. There is this belief that simply reading about something or watching a video about something or talking to someone about something is enough to count as experience.

It doesn’t.

AOC has no idea what a garbage disposal is. That’s incredible, and not just because it’s hilarious. It’s incredible because it is one of the most American experiences. Every family meal turns into a pop quiz over whether or not the disposal can handle the half a plate of food your kid didn’t eat or whether you just throw it away. And, if you do throw it away, is it something you should immediately take outside? Otherwise, it could make your kitchen reek.

AOC has never had that experience. It’s a little experience, one you may not really think about as you use your own, but it is an experience you have if you have been outside of New York City.

This freshman Congresswoman preaches from her office, her social media account, and in front of every crowd and camera she can get in front of and will tell you that how you live your life is absolutely and without question utterly wrong. But, how does she know that? Has she lived it? Has she experienced what you have?

It’s highly doubtful. She still claims that alleged issues with the VA are a right-wing conspiracy. She has never had a friend or family member forced to wait months for care or get completely ignored in the waiting room. She doesn’t know a family that has suffered the loss of a veteran relative who takes their own life because they can’t get the help they need.

This is not to say that AOC isn’t American. Her experience is uniquely American: A self-made woman who went from bartender to the most influential Democrat of the modern era. But to say she represents the American public or knows what is best for them is hubris at its finest. She does not have a clue what life is like outside of New York City, the individual and unique struggles that families across the country have to deal with.

You can’t say for sure that their way of life is wrong if you’ve never personally experienced it. Ignorance should not count as experience, but in her case, she likes to pretend it does.

Nobel Memorial Prize-winning economist and NY Times columnist Paul Krugman. Screen grab via Bloomberg.

I’m not really sure what’s worse: New York Times columnist Paul Krugman attempting to differentiate between “brands of anti-Semitism”, his poor track record when it comes to predicting the economy, or his latest gripe: the worthiness of Medal of Freedom recipients.

On Monday, President Trump awarded golfing champ Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in a Rose Garden ceremony:

“Tiger, we are inspired by everything you’ve become and attained. The job you’ve done is incredible,” Trump said to Woods. “Your spectacular achievements on the golf course, your triumph over physical adversity and your relentless will to win, win, win; these qualities embody the American spirit of pushing boundaries, defying limits and always striving for greatness.”

Trump, an avid golfer who played with Woods at the president’s golf club in Florida this past February, also referred to Woods as “a true legend, an extraordinary athlete who has transformed golf and achieved new levels of dominance.”

“He’s also a great person. He’s a great guy,” Trump added.

During the ceremony, the president recounted highlights of Woods’ career in detailed, sometimes flowery language as the 43-year-old golfer stood stoically beside him. Both men were clad in blue suits and red ties, matching Woods’ traditional Sunday apparel on the golf course.

[…]

Trump announced that Woods would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom last month after Woods won the Masters Tournament. It was the 43-year-old Woods’ first victory at Augusta National since 2005 and his first major title since 2008.

As it turns out, this was upsetting to Nobel Memorial Prize winner Krugman, who took to the Twitter machine to lament about how far the criteria for receiving such honors had supposedly fallen under Trump:

Twitter users said ‘hold up a sec’:

Woods said during his speech yesterday that he named his 10-year-old son after Charlie Sifford.

My advice to Kruggie going forward would be to take a novel approach to commenting on such matters: Think before you speak. I know it’s a tall order, but please – give it a try.

During the Monday episode of his show on SiriusXM 125, David Webb had mentioned accusations from certain folks on the left that essentially made American culture out to be a bad thing, for the United States and the rest of the world. Wrapped up in the “culture” term was our economic system, our educational system and of course, our culture as culture. At the end, Mr Webb posed a question, “Is our culture bad?”

I just couldn’t let that one lie there. So, I called in to the show and actually got to speak with Mr Webb. What I told him was this…

I mentioned that both of us having been overseas, he as a Marine and I as a Soldier are very familiar with the sight on certain designated days, a line of foreign nationals stretching around the block occupied by the U.S. Embassy, waiting to apply for visas to come to the United States. Both of us have also been down Embassy Row in Washington DC. At no time have I or did Webb, ever recall seeing a line of Americans around any foreign embassy wanting to emigrate. Over in CID (Army Criminal Investigation Command) or in his case, NCIS, they’d call that a clue. Mr Webb also managed to add a few anecdotes of his own as sort of corollaries to my example. If you want to listen to these two segments, they are on Monday the 6th episode and start at 23 minutes and 2hrs, 15 minutes respectively.

Later on, in the last hour of the show, I managed to tee up with Mr Webb, the idea of revisiting the Davis-Bacon Act during the Infrastructure Bill discussions I wrote of in a previous article. More to follow on that.

Ilhan Omar Goes On A Power Trip

These are heady days indeed for Ilhan Omar. Scarcely a news cycle goes by without some mention of the Congresswoman from Minnesota.

Monday’s tweet, followed up by an interview with the Huffington Post, indicates that all of this media attention has left the anti-Semitic lawmaker feeling a bit too full of herself.

“This is a president who has come to power vilifying and demonizing immigrants and refugees. He proudly said we should halt Muslims from entering our country. It’s not a surprise that he finds his biggest nemesis in me,” Omar tweeted.

In March, speaking at a Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) banquet, Omar described the 9/11 attacks as “some people did something.” Her remarks triggered widespread condemnation and culminated in President Trump tweeting a powerful video of the attacks alongside Omar’s comment with the caption, “WE WILL NEVER FORGET!”

Omar told the Huffington Post that, “He clearly has a disdain for black women who see themselves as equal to him.”

She added, “Clearly, I am a nightmare ― because he can’t stop really thinking about ways that he can continue to use my identity to marginalize our communities.”

Omar’s recent defense of Venezuelan dictator Nicholas Maduro and her attempts to place blame on the US for the country’s problems has led to criticism from both Vice President Mike Pence and State Secretary Mike Pompeo. Omar told “Democracy Now!” last week:

A lot of the policies that we have put in place has kind of helped lead the devastation in Venezuela and we have sort of set the stage for where we are arriving today.

This particular bullying and the use of sanctions to eventually intervene and make regime change really does not help the people of countries like Venezuela and it certainly does not help and is not in the interest of the United States.

Omar sees the great deal of media attention she receives as a reflection of how “important” and “influential” she has become. The reality is that any lawmaker who continually spews similar inflammatory, anti-Semitic, anti-American, defiant vitriol would receive the same attention.

Most Americans find it appalling that someone with such unpatriotic and disrespectful feelings toward our country sits in the U.S. House of Representatives.

President Trump is not afraid of her. Obviously, she is not his biggest nemesis. She is more like a child who deliberately acts out in order to attract negative attention.

When an individual makes shocking statements, people notice. Omar mistakes press attention over her poor behavior with how powerful she is.

Note to Ilhan Omar: You are not important. You are inappropriate, ungrateful and graceless.

The Democrats Still Have No Plan

Westlake Legal Group trump-smirk2-620x414 The Democrats Still Have No Plan President Politics Front Page Stories Featured Story elections donald trump democrats Allow Media Exception 2020

Donald Trump speaking at CPAC 2011 in Washington, D.C. by Gage Skidmore, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0/Original

There are 21 Democrats running for President of the United States. Each of them is trying to navigate their way through the primary by just throwing out policy ideas to see what sticks.

Most of them are embracing the extremes. They (wrongly) believe the best way to beat President Donald Trump in 2020 is to swing as far in the other direction as possible, and they are basing this assessment on approval numbers and the loudest minority of their base. In reality, it’s pretty much guaranteed that this track will only serve to alienate the moderates Democrats will need to win.

Several other Democrats, meanwhile, on the House Judiciary Committee want to hold Attorney General in contempt, and are pushing for his resignation, if not outright impeachment. Their focus on Trump’s possible obstruction during the Mueller investigation signals that they are also not ruling out keeping the impeachment of Trump idea on the table.

As well, you have freshmen in the House who are taking over the party as the de facto heads. They get the headlines, the media time, and the social media reactions to keep their very extreme ideas at the forefront.

What they are all lacking, however, is a unified message and a strategy for actually taking Trump down.

The Democrats don’t have as clear a path as they’d like you to believe. The latest economic numbers are great for him. He’s the incumbent. He has a very loyal base. They only way you beat him is to pull away from the moderates who don’t want to listen to any more of his “extreme” positions on trade and immigration. You don’t win moderates by saying “You know those tax cuts you got? We want to undo those and actually make you pay more.” Which is exactly what would happen if many of their policy ideas were put in place.

All it takes is coverage like that of Brian Sims in Pennsylvania, the insane state representative asking for followers to identify teen girls praying outside an abortion clinic and harassing older women who oppose abortion. All it takes is more coverage of Ilhan Omar seemingly supporting Hamas over Israel.

All it takes is more open hostility to Christians and more demands that we allow doctors to leave newborns on the table to die right after birth?

These are the positions you see taken in the Democrats party. They aren’t fringe politicians taking those positions, either. You see state officials, people in Congress, and other mainstream pundits saying this is all okay.

It’s not going to beat Trump, though. The American public averages out as a moderate voting force. If you go too far one way, they will abandon you. That is a large part of why Trump won once and why, if the Democrats keep this up, he’ll win again.

I had to double take at this headline.

The New York Times has endorsed giving Trump the $4.5B he requested in funds for the border. Not just a single writer either, it’s the whole editorial board.

The New York Times editorial board urged Congress to give President Trump the administration’s requested $4.5 billion in emergency funding for the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“President Trump is right: There is a crisis at the southern border,” the editorial board wrote Sunday in a piece titled, “Congress, Give Trump his Border Money.”

Crisis is the santizied word liberals like to use about the border because they are loathe to say “emergency” and possibly give Trump any credit. We all know what it is though. Over 100,000 people crossed illegally last month. The CPB don’t have the manpower or resources to handle the situation. Our asylum laws are being abused at a ridiculous level and Congress refuses to act.

If what’s going on at the border isn’t an emergency, then the word has lost all meaning.

While the Times manages to get the top line decision right, they still had to get their shots in.

“There is no pressing national security threat — no invasion of murderers, drug cartels or terrorists. No matter how often Mr. Trump delivers such warnings, they bear little resemblance to the truth,” it said.

They of course base that on absolutely nothing. When you have 100,000 un-vetted people crossing in a few weeks time, the idea that the drug cartels and gangs aren’t heavily taking advantage of that is nonsensical. They are out to make money, among other things. As the system is being overrun, it’s common sense that bad actors would work toward their own gain.  The Times assuming otherwise is pure gaslighting.

“None of the money would go toward Mr. Trump’s border wall,” it wrote. “Several hundred million dollars would, however, go toward shoring up border security operations, including increasing the number of detention beds overseen by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE. This, for Democrats, is a nonstarter.”

“But until better policies are in place, Democrats need to find a way to provide money for adequate shelter,” the board continued, encouraging both Democrats and the White House to be open to conditions from the other side of the aisle.

Perhaps the Times should examine why it’s acceptable for Democrats to reject increasing the number of beds instead of just passing over it as a legitimate position to hold. That never made any sense and always seemed inhumane at best, yet the media have done nothing to put pressure on Democrats for holding CPB hostage. Instead, they spend all their time gnashing their teeth over whether Trump is accurately describing every asylum seeker properly.

You can almost feel the torture in every word as you read the Times’ article endorsing Trump’s funding request. They really, really would have preferred not to write this. What we are seeing here is a decision driven by pure pragmatism, even as they long to push their political narrative in a different direction. I guess that’s better than nothing though. Perhaps the Democrat party should try the same thing?
