Sorry Democrat Voters, Gun Legislation Will Have To Wait; Your Party Prefers To Work On Impeachment

Democrats are signaling to their voters they consider hearings on third-hand whistleblower allegations way more important than the policy issues those voters elected them to work on. Most notably, gun legislation, which had been discussed in recent weeks as forthcoming, but had been stalled while the White House made up its mind on expanded background checks.

It’s now stalled indefinitely because Democrats apparently prefer to work on an impeachment inquiry (whatever that means) and hold hearings on a dubious whistleblower account in an attempt to go after Trump again rather than draft and debate policy legislation.

Going after Trump appears to be their sole priority.

It had been five days since Chris Murphy had heard from the Trump administration on negotiations over expanding background checks on gun sales. On the sixth day, the Connecticut Democrat endorsed an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The move sealed what many of Murphy’s colleagues had long suspected: That gun negotiations have fallen apart and may be impossible to resurrect now that the vast majority of House Democrats and a growing minority of Democratic senators are now calling for the president’s impeachment. The prospect of cutting a deal with the president that was at odds with the NRA was always a long-shot, but now it seems downright implausible for Trump to negotiate on guns with Democrats seeking to oust him from office.

Lawmakers like to talk about walking and chewing gum at the same time, but Murphy acknowledges that the march toward impeachment “may temporarily be the end of the road for a lot of legislative initiatives,” including his.

As Gutowksi reports at the Washington Free Beacon, Democrats had been the ones most eager to get things moving on gun control legislation, but the impeachment inquiry “sucks up all the oxygen,” according to one Senate staffer.

And that’s not the only thing the mission to investigate Trump for impeachable offenses will stall.

The inquiry, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D.) officially labeled an impeachment investigation, will consume Washington for the weeks and months ahead, according to the sources. They also said it will be difficult to move key legislative priorities like a reworked North American trade deal and lowering the cost of prescription drugs, not to mention a passable gun control package.

The impeachment inquiry may have ended any hope to find a gun bill that could pass in the near term.

“I’m hoping that these things can be compartmentalized and that we can continue to pursue policy that I’ve been advocating,” Senator Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) told Politico. “But I acknowledge that a lot of clamoring for impeachment is not helpful. It makes it more difficult.”

Some senators are still holding out hope for something to get done, and White House legislative affairs director Eric Ueland, who floated the idea of a universal background check system on Capitol Hill to a frosty reception last week, told Politico the White House is still working to find a way forward.

Trump had apparently reached out to Pelosi on Tuesday according to Politico, telling the House Speaker they were very close on gun legislation. However, that did not stop Speaker Pelosi from announcing Wednesday morning that the House’s preference and intent was to look into impeachable offenses, apparently at the expense of everything else.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at The Atlantic’s Ideas Summit in Washington, confirmed that Trump called her Tuesday morning to talk about gun violence and told her “we’re getting close to a solution.” But then the conversation “segued into other things,” she added.

Sorry Democrat voters who hoped their elected legislators were planning on actually legislating. You’ll have to content yourselves with a hunt for something impeachable. And nothing else.

Tulsi Gabbard Won’t Help Impeach Trump and Tells Dems That Kicking Trump out Isn’t Their Decision to Make

Westlake Legal Group f1c61773-57dd-4e5a-96c7-3045358f05e5-620x317 Tulsi Gabbard Won’t Help Impeach Trump and Tells Dems That Kicking Trump out Isn’t Their Decision to Make Ukraine tulsi gabbard transcript Politics Joe Biden impeachment Front Page Stories Featured Story elections donald trump democrats Allow Media Exception 2020

2020 Democratic candidate and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard isn’t jumping onto the impeachment bandwagon like most Democrats are and believe that if President Donald Trump is going to be pushed out of office, it should be a result of the whishes of the people, not the politicians.

Appearing on Hill.TV, Gabbard shrugged at the transcript concerning a conversation Trump had with the Ukrainian president about the corruption charges surrounding Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son. According to Gabbard, if Democrats looked to the rest of America to gauge the way it feels about impeachment, Democrats wouldn’t go down that road.

“I think when you step outside of the bubble here in Washington and you get to where most folks in the country are — look, I’m not a lawyer, but I think most people reading through that transcript are not going to find that extremely compelling cause to throw out a president that won an election in 2016,” Gabbard said. “Instead, I think what most people will see is, hey, this is another move by Democrats to get rid of Donald Trump, further deepening the already hyper-partisan divides that we have in this country.”

Gabbard said that while she’s running to defeat Trump, who she says isn’t fit for office, kicking him out of office is not Democrat lawmaker’s decision to make.

“I just think it is so important for our country to be able to move forward, to bridge these divides, that it be the American people that make this decision,” said Gabbard

Gabbard seems to be one of the few Democrats who is actually paying attention to the polls. The American people have continuously rejected the idea of impeaching by a good majority since the question was brought up back when Trump was even first elected.

The latest poll from Quinnipiac showed the same, with 57 percent of Americans saying that impeaching Trump isn’t a good idea, vs only 37 saying it is.

(READ: Poll Shows The Majority Of Americans Still Don’t Want Trump Impeached)

What’s more, this impeachment process would require an investigation into the Ukraine phone call, which may end up hurting Biden more than Trump.

Gabbard seems to be one of the few Democrats who isn’t letting emotion or an advanced case of TDS drive her decision making. This will, no doubt, make her wildly unpopular within Democrat circles, as the majority of her colleagues are on board with this plan of action.

But we’ll see how it plays out with voters. Gabbard seems to have a knack for survival, and she likely owes it to her ability to appeal to moderates within the Democrat party who would otherwise have cold feet voting for radicals like Warren or Sanders. This appeal to let the people decide may show her as having character, and that may attract independents.

Time will tell, but one thing is almost guaranteed, Trump won’t be impeached and Gabbard will have an “I told you so” lined up for the future.

Read the Shakedown Letter Three Dem Senators Sent to the Ukrainian Prosecutor General

Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez becomes emotional as he speaks to reporters in front of the courthouse in Newark, N.J., Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017. The federal bribery trial of Menendez ended in a mistrial Thursday when the jury said it was hopelessly deadlocked on all charges against the New Jersey politician and a wealthy donor. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig;

After reading the transcript of President Trump’s July 25th telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, the repellent chair of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff (D-CA) said, “This is a classic Mafia-like shakedown of a foreign leader.”

As the Democrats and the mainstream media spiral out of control over President Trump’s July 25th telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr, two exchanges between Democratic senators and Ukrainian officials involving actual quid pro quo have surfaced.

In May 2018, Democratic Sens. Bob Menendez (NJ), Dick Durbin (IL) and Patrick Leahy (VT) sent a letter to Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko pressing his office to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

Two days before the senators wrote this letter, the New York Times reported that Ukraine had frozen investigations related to the Mueller probe.

The senators remind Lutsenko of everything the U.S. has done for his country and essentially tell him, it would be a shame if that were to end.

The letter begins with the senators expressing their “great concern about reports that your office has taken steps to impede cooperation with the investigation of United States Special Counsel Robert Mueller.”

It discusses the progress Ukraine has made with U.S. support and tells Lutsenko they are “disappointed that some in Kyiv appear to have cast aside these principles in order to avoid the ire of President Trump.”

The senators note that by freezing the investigations, Ukraine is “thereby eliminating scope for cooperation with the Mueller probe into related issues…If these reports are true, we strongly encourage you to reverse course and halt any efforts to impede cooperation with this important investigation. As strong advocates for a robust and close relationship with Ukraine, we believe that our cooperation should extend to such legal matters, regardless of politics.”

They end by demanding requesting information about Ukraine’s dealings with Trump administration officials.

Trump attorney Jay Sekulow spoke to Sean Hannity on Wednesday night and said, “That’s a quid pro quo. You do this. We’ll do that.”

Several days ago, the Hill’s John Solomon reported a little known story about Sen. Christopher Murphy’s (D-CT) bipartisan meeting with Zelensky in Kiev several weeks ago. I posted about this here.

Following the meeting, Murphy spoke to reporters. He said he pointed out to Zelensky that Ukraine currently enjoyed bipartisan support for its U.S. aid but wouldn’t it be a shame if something were to happen to it but if he chose to “investigate past corruption allegations involving Americans, including former Vice President Joe Biden’s family,” he runs the risk of losing Democratic support going forward.

Murphy reportedly told Zelensky that U.S. aid was Ukraine’s “most important asset” and if he were to comply with Trump’s request, it would be “disastrous for long-term U.S.-Ukraine relations.”

Solomon spoke to Murphy on Monday and he said, “I told Zelensky that he should not insert himself or his government into American politics. I cautioned him that complying with the demands of the President’s campaign representatives to investigate a political rival of the President would gravely damage the U.S.-Ukraine relationship. There are few things that Republicans and Democrats agree on in Washington these days, and support for Ukraine is one of them.”

After the meeting, Murphy had tweeted, “I told him it was best to ignore requests from Trump’s campaign operatives. He agreed.”

This is also a quid pro quo. ‘You want to keep that U.S. aid flowing, you better lay off the Biden family.’

The double standard is breathtaking.

I sure wish the Republicans in Congress would fight back a little harder. Maybe Corey Lewandowski can show them how it’s done.

There May Be Something In The Whistleblower Report

Westlake Legal Group Sad-Donald-Trump-Consoled-620x325 There May Be Something In The Whistleblower Report Ukraine Senate Intelligence Committee Senate republicans Joe Biden Impeachment of President Trump impeachment impeach Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump democrats aid 2020

The transcript of the call between President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian leader was more or less a dud for the Democrats. However, long before it came out, they moved the goalposts and claimed instead that releasing the whistleblower report that started this whole drama was the only thing that would settle the matter.

“This whole drama,” of course, is the claim that Trump used military aid to Ukraine as the carrot on a stick to get them to re-open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

The transcript reveals there was no overt “quid pro quo” as the White House messaging puts it. But, the transcript didn’t entirely eliminate the possibility, and it is open to interpretation. The problem for Democrats is that you can’t justify impeachment on interpretation alone. You need a smoking gun, and that transcript didn’t provide it.

However… the whistleblower report is now in the hands of the Senate Intelligence Committee and based on public statements and some private concerns, it could possibly pave a path to impeachment.

The statement from Ben Sasse pours a bit of cold water on both sides. In it, he says that Democrats should not begin an inquiry until they have all the facts – indicating that there is likewise nothing overtly damning in the report. However, he also says Republicans should not automatically circle the wagons – indicating that there is cause for some concern.

Sasse isn’t the type of guy to just play both ends here. He’s not terribly difficult to read, and this isn’t just “Sasse is up for re-election and was endorsed by Trump” talk from his office. Now, one statement might not be enough to really convince anybody, but then you have to add in what is being discussed behind the scenes.

In conversations with a small handful of people, a few things start becoming clear:

  1. There are a handful – say, about half – the Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee who are taking this very, very seriously. Most are names you’ve seen in reports already – Sasse, Susan Collins, and Richard Burr among them. There are likewise some not on the committee who are nonetheless concerned and want to see some real closure here instead of partisan wagon-circling.
  2. Even more Republicans are on the fence and want to wait this out, under the theory that the House Democrats may overplay their hand – which, in total fairness, is very on-brand for House Democrats.
  3. The whistleblower complaint may not have a smoking gun, either, but the whistleblower apparently did a good job of setting the stage for impeachment proceedings, and there are requests for documents and evidence involved.

It’s simply impossible right now to say that Trump can or should be impeached, not that partisan actors haven’t already taken sides on the issue. Likewise, the media has come to its conclusions, though a lot of reporting is already suspect and those reporters have no one to blame but themselves for it.

No one, including those who have read the report, can definitively say one way or the other that Trump is guilty of something impeachable. The conditions, by all publicly available information, do not appear to have been met. However, that doesn’t mean Trump is free and clear, either. In all likelihood, the Democrats have found an issue to keep the investigations into Trump going, considering the dud that Mueller’s report has turned out to be.

How Trump and his administration handle it, and how the Senate decides to move forward on it, will be the real test.

MSNBC’s Katy Tur Tells a Flat Out Lie to Her Audience–Not That They Can Tell the Difference

This is why more people would trust a crack ho’ with their car keys and credit cards than trust the media to tell the truth. This is MSNBC’s Katy Tur who rose to fame by sleeping with Keith Olbermann (please…no mental images)

What there is proof of and what there is a paper trail of, because the White House just released it, is a summary or notes of a conversation the President had with the man that was sitting to his right, the president of Ukraine. Where he said, “will you do me and investigate Vice President Biden’s son? Will you do me a favor and get involved in the 2020 election, Vice President Biden is my chief political opponent. At that point he was leading Donald Trump quite a lot in the polls…

Let’s take a look at what was actually said:

The President: Good because I heard you had a prosecutor who was very good and he was shut down and that’s really unfair. A lot of people are talking about that, the way they shut your very good prosecutor down and you had some very bad people involved. Mr. Giuliani is a highly respected man. He was the mayor bf New York City, a great mayor, and I would like him to call you. I will ask him to call yotu along with the Attorney General. Rudy very much knows what’s happening and he is a very capable guy. If you could speak to him that would be great. The former ambassador from the United States, the woman, was bad news and the people she was dealing with in the Ukraine were bad news so I just want to_let you know that. The other thing, There’s a lot of talk about Biden’s son, that Biden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you ·can look into it … It sounds horrible to me.

So no, Trump does not ask for Zelensky to investigate Biden’s son. Rather clearly and unambiguously he asks for Zelensky to assist Attorney General Bill Barr’s ongoing inquiry. We don’t know what that is but Joe Biden using his office to stop the investigation of his son’s rather blatant grifting.

Let me take a brief side trip. I was on this site with Erick for a decade. And as much as I respect Erick, this analysis is simply nuts:

Of course it makes a difference when you carry out an action that is of direct benefit to you. Did it not, we would not have conflict of interest laws. Beyond that Biden was not some random flunkey, he was the vice president of the United States and Obama had publicly anointed Biden as his “point person” on Ukraine policy. Biden clearly had plenary authority it that area and was not merely passing on orders. Even were he just passing on orders he had a criminal level of conflict of interest because his son was a subject of an investigation by the guy he had fired. In fact, under federal law the creation of an appearance of conflict of interest is an actual conflict of interest. This is not rocket science. This is very basic stuff from annual mandatory training.

Back to Katy Tur. Not only did Trump not ask Zelensky to investigate Biden, Tur says Trump asked Zelensky to get involved in the 2020 election. That is simply false. And even if you are making a rather bizarre extrapolation of events (no one at MSNBC ever showed the slightest qualms about Hillary Clinton’s campaign employing an asset of British intelligence to pay Russian intelligence sources to create an FBI investigation of her political opponent), stating that sick little fantasy as though it is a quote is a level of dishonesty that we expect only of Brian Stelter and Chris Cillizza.

The best responses to this are in reply to Jason Howerton’s plea: “@KatyTurNBC, you’re better than this.”

They are right. She’s not better than that. In fact, she’s worse than that.

Last night, the leftwing media was out if force playing the gotcha game. How it worked was a reporter would present a Republican politician with a quote that allegedly came from President Trump. The GOP politician would be asked if they agree with it. It was the old game of “have you stopped beating your wife” because the target had no way of knowing if the quote was accurate and, unfortunately, many people assumed they were dealing with an honorable individual. (ProTip: never assume the average political reporter has any more substantive sense of honor and decency than your typical debauched Arabian whoremonger.) But so many people fall for it that they don’t know how to handle it when they meet up with someone who is wise to the game.

This latter event was the case when a Huffington Post reporter named Arthur Delaney tried to use deception to get a quote he could use either to ride the “Republicans are fleeing from Trump” narrative or to file in the “Republicans will do anything to cover for Trump” narrative. Unfortunately for him, his target was Missouri Senator Josh Hawley.

This is how Delaney describes it:

The problem with Delaney’s statement is that is composed of a couple of lies. The main one is that at no point in the White House statement does Trump imply that he wants Joe Biden investigated. Delaney simply makes that up out of whole cloth and because we have to assume he’s not so stupid that he can’t read, our only explanation left is that he’s lying. The other issue, of course, is that Senator Hawley’s timeline doesn’t show him even acknowledging Delaney’s presence on Twitter before what happened next. That is either a lie or the garden variety megalomania you find in failed reporters.

And then Hawley unloaded on Delaney by revealing what was really said.

This is the transcript for your convenience:

This is actually stunning behavior by Delaney. He not only lied to Hawley to elicit a response, he then compounded the lie on Twitter to get the story Hawley refused to give him.

The Media Got Almost Everything Wrong Leading Up to The Release of the Trump-Ukraine Transcript

Westlake Legal Group fake-news-1024x578-620x350 The Media Got Almost Everything Wrong Leading Up to The Release of the Trump-Ukraine Transcript Ukraine Call transcript the washington post quid pro quo Nicole Wallace MSNBC media lies katy tur Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story elections donald trump democrats Debunked CNN bias

Being a mainstream “journalist” means never having to say you’re sorry.

In the lead up to the release of the transcript of the call between Trump and the Ukrainian President, we were told all kinds of things via anonymously sourced reports. Trump had made promises. Trump had offered a quid pro quo. Trump had threatened to withhold aid.

Here’s a sampling of some of the stuff that ended up not being true.

Ryan says “Democrats claimed here,” and that’s true, but it was the media who were putting out the reports Democrats were citing.

Here’s another one.

In short, nearly every single damning thing that was claimed prior to the transcript being released turned out to be not true. The only thing that was actually confirmed in the call was that 1) it took place and 2) that Biden was discussed, which Trump had never denied.

There was no “promise” made. Trump did not mention Biden eight separate times in order to apply immense pressure on Ukraine’s president. It’s simply not there in the transcript.

Hilariously, even after we’ve seen the call, The Wall Street Journal “stands by” it’s reporting on the eight mentions of Biden.

Just unbelievable. It’s literally not there in the call but they stand by it. Does that make sense to anyone?

As much as I’d love to chalk all this up to honest mistakes, it’s not. These reporters are mining sources they know are partisan and are more than willing to run to print with whatever ludicrous supposition some anonymous individual tells them. If it’s wrong, what do they care? There’s never any consequences. They can just move on to the next story and do the same thing again.

Case in point, this latest claim.

And look, I like Guy. He works for Townhall, one of our sister sites, and also does Fox News stuff. I’m not trying to pick on him. But at what point do you just wait before running with this stuff? What part of that story is even worth considering right now given how badly these same outlets failed us just a day earlier?

BTW, the “adviser” in that story? It’s this guy.

A hack who’s been feeding info to Fusion GPS going back to the 2016 election is not someone to be taking seriously when it comes to claims against Donald Trump. Especially when the Ukrainian president himself says there was no pressure applied and no such condition.

Heck, look at how the press is spinning the transcript itself, omitting entire pages in order to connect two disconnected points to claim a quid pro quo that’s not actually there.

Keep in mind, Alex Griswold is not a Trump guy. Not at all. Quite the contrary. But he sees through this nonsense.

MSNBC also did the above falsifying edit twice. None of this was by accident.

The bottom line question is why does anyone continue to take these outlets seriously? Is there no end to the line of credibility that will be extended to them? We keep pretending they have standards. They don’t have standards. They have narratives, nothing more.

This is the story of a woman named Clinton. Hillary Clinton.

Shortly before the 2016 elections when then-candidate Donald Trump stated he wasn’t sure if he’d accept the results of the presidential election if he lost, the mainstream media and their fellow Democrats erupted in outrage at the thought.

Democratic candidate for president Clinton, who pollsters and liberal commentators alike predicted would win in a landslide, led the mob in protest:

Clinton pounced hard, describing Trump as a whiner who always claims he’s being cheated on whenever “things aren’t going in his direction.”

“This is how Donald thinks, and it’s funny, but it’s also really troubling. That is not the way our democracy works,” Clinton said. “He’s denigrating and talking down our democracy. I, for one, am appalled that somebody who is the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that kind of position.”

But as it turned out, it was Trump who won. And since that time it has been the media and Democrats including Clinton who have been on a coordinated and relentless campaign to try and delegitimize Trump’s victory by alleging he worked hand in hand with the Russians to “hack/steal” the election.

The punishment was to be one thing and one thing only: impeachment.

And even though the allegation that Trump colluded with Putin to “subvert democracy” or whatever turned out to be fake news, the Clinton/Democrat/media cabal have continued to call for Trump’s ousting for the crime of upsetting what was supposed to be Queen Hillary’s coronation in 2016.

As we all know by now, those cries grew louder this week after Democrat/media hopes were raised after erroneous reports that Trump engaged in some quid pro quo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky back in July.

Naturally, Hillary Clinton – who has not gotten over what happened in 2016 – joined the chorus of those concluding that the only answer to the (nothingburger) allegations was impeachment:

Juanita Broaddrick, who has maintained for decades that former President Bill Clinton raped her in 1978 when he was the Arkansas attorney general, alerted Hillary that the only thing she was doing by showing support for impeachment was turning more people into Trump voters:

There may be some merit to what Broaddrick suggests. Polls show Americans by and large are not in the mood for impeachment. If Democrats continue their partisan mission based on allegations that once again do not pass the smell test, it may ultimately end up hurting them at the ballot box come 2020.

Despite poll numbers, common sense, and the obvious misgivings of some of their leaders, the Democrats are pushing forward with beginning the process for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.

While many Democrats believe this is the surefire way to weaken Trump enough for 2020, the GOP and Trump himself seemed to be ready to take advantage of the obvious mistake. Trump even seemed to have a video ready to go for when the Democrats inevitably announced their intentions.

The GOP and Trump have also sent out fundraising emails specifically citing the efforts of the Democrats to impeach Trump as a reason to donate, asking recipients of the letters to “be a leader in defending the president against these baseless and disgusting attacks.”

According to Politico, the people were more than ready to jump on board and give money to Trump. As of this writing, they’ve already collected over $1 million:

Trump’s reelection campaign and the Republican National Committee on Tuesday sent an array of fundraising emails inviting conservatives to donate and join the “Official Impeachment Defense Task Force,” which was described as a group “made up of only President Trump’s most LOYAL supporters, the ones committed to fighting for him, re-electing him, and taking back the House.”

By the end of the day, party officials said, the fundraising offensive had netted around $1 million.

That took almost no time. Democrats should see this sudden surge in cash as a very serious sign.

As it stands, these impeachment efforts aren’t exactly standing on solid foundations. Many don’t even know what they’re impeachment Trump for, and those who point to the Ukraine “transcripts” are pointing at something that was best described by Lindsey Graham; “insane.”

In fact, given the fact that these transcripts involve Trump asking someone to look into the sudden halting of prosecution charges against Hunter Biden, the son of 2020 Democrat candidate Joe Biden, this may end up backfiring on Democrats in a big way.
