After a growing number of Democrats in recent days have criticized Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan as unhelpful and unrealistic, President Trump took his turn at the Twitter microphone this morning and delivered some inconvenient truths of his own to the struggling presidential candidate and his party.

Here’s what the President tweeted:

Trump was responding to remarks O’Rourke made at last Thursday’s Democratic presidential debate where he said “Hell yes” in response to ABC News debate moderator David Muir’s question about whether or not he was going to take away people’s guns if elected president:

MUIR: Some of the stage have suggested a voluntary buy-back for guns in this country. You have gone further. You said, quote, “Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government, all of them. You know that critics call this confiscation. Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?

BETO O’ROURKE: I am, if it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield. If the high impact, high velocity, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so you would bleed to death on a battlefield and not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers. When we see that being used against children and in Odessa, I met the mother of a 15-year-old girl who was shot by an AR-15 and that mother watched her bleed to death over the course of an hour because so many other people were shot by that AR-15 in Odessa, there weren’t enough ambulances to get to them in time. Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against a fellow American anymore.

As of this writing “Dummy Beto” is still trending on Twitter:

The failed Senate candidate replied by doubling down on his call to “buy back” all “assault weapons”, and accusing Trump of “cowardice”:

Beto can say Trump is a “coward” on this issue all day long but it doesn’t change the fact that Trump is right.

What Beto declared at the debate confirms the worst fears of gun rights groups and other 2nd Amendment defenders who have warned for years that Democratic efforts at gun control were part of a “step-by-step process” to eventually take away guns. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) explained this well on Thursday when asked about universal background checks:

“When you really understand what the endgame of the left is, it’s literally mandatory buybacks or as I call it: confiscation. This is a step-by-step process for them,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Hill Thursday when asked about the debate over expanded background checks for firearms sales.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), who has been working with Republican Senators on a compromise bill, said last Friday on CNN that O’Rourke’s statement at the debate “will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying Democrats are coming for your guns.”

To make matters worse for Democrats, O’Rourke is not the only presidential candidate calling for mandatory gun confiscation. Sens. Kamala Harris (CA) and Cory Booker (NJ), whose campaigns are going nowhere but who have nevertheless both been floated as vice presidential possibilities, have endorsed his plan.

If Beto was a wise man he would have never jumped on board the gun grabbing train and instead offered up some constitutionally sound common sense solutions that most Americans (including his fellow Texans) could get behind. But after the horrific El Paso mass shooting, he has been operating solely on emotion and anger on this issue, which is precisely why he belongs nowhere near the White House.

Because as I’ve written before, no matter how passionate, emotional, and personal an issue may be to a candidate, an unconstitutional plan is still unconstitutional.

I’ve Said Some Very Unkind Things About Corey Lewandowski and I Take Them All Back

Corey Lewandowski, former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, references a copy of the Mueller Report that he requested to be brought to him, as he testifies to the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2019, in Washington. (AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin)

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee as chaired by Fat Jerry Nadler was revealed to the world for the collection of lackwits that it is. The proximate cause of this revelation was Nadler’s insistence on obtaining televised testimony of former Trump aide and occasional campaign manager and New Hampshire senate candidate Corey Lewandowski. My colleague, Elizabeth Vaughn, has the full story in Lewandowski Trolls Lawmakers At House Judiciary Committee Hearing; Calls Eric Swalwell ‘President Swalwell’.

There were epic moments. We have Lewandowski calling Eric Swawell “Presidnent Swalwell.”

We have Mensa-reject, Sheila Jackson Lee referring to “Volume Eleven” of the Mueller Report”

And getting nothing at all from Lewandowski

Nadler refused to allow a GOP member any opportunity to question Lewandowski and gave a highly paid consultant and major Democrat donor thirty minutes.

All this blow-tried toad was able to elicit from Lewandowski was that he doesn’t feel under any obligation to tell the media the truth. [Insert “shocked face” emoji.]

Somehow this is a major revelation to the same people who pushed lie after lie upon the American people with the Russia Hoax.

In short, I doubt that there was ever a witness before any House committee who was more richly in contempt of the membership and the process than was Lewandowski. And it was only fair. Nadler and his fluffers have worked long and hard to reach the level of assclownishness they have achieved and they should not be deprived of their reward.

This morning, CNN had Lewandowski on to be interviewed by one of it dimmer bulbs (this, in a universe of talent that includes Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo, and Brian Stelter is not much of a distinction), Alisyn Camerota. It went about as well as could have been expected given Camerota’s lack of talent.

The left seems to think that Camerota drew blood because Lewandowski says he never read the Mueller report, but this is the real blood being drawn. CNN is belaboring Lewandowski for lying to the media (I really don’t get why this is a revelation to sane people) while they employ a contributor who is facing indictment for making false statements to the DOJ IG. Not quite credible.

Yesterday he walked into a hostile hearing and left a Category 4 hurricane trail of wreckage behind him. He went on CNN this morning and gave a performance that will haunt Camerota’s dreams for a decade or so…I wouldn’t be surprised to encounter her at a PTSD clinic…or on Skid Row scoring crack.

During the 2015-2106 season, I said some bad things about Lewandowski. They were justified, mind you, but perhaps overly harsh. Based on his performance yesterday and today, I take them all back. I’ll even send some money to his Senate campaign.

She’s Free, Freefallin’: Kamala Harris Places ‘a Distant Fifth’ in New Presidential Poll … in California

New Democratic presidential polling information for California from an Emerson University survey shows Joe Biden and Sens. Bernie Sanders (VT) and Elizabeth Warren (MA) all firmly in the top tier with numbers in the double digits. But for home state Sen. Kamala Harris? The news is not good.

The Hill reports:

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) are tied for first place among Democratic primary voters in California, while home-state Sen. Kamala Harris (D) is running in a distant fifth, according to a new poll.

[…]

Tech entrepreneur and political newcomer Andrew Yang notches 7 percent support in the survey, with Harris following at 6 percent support.

That is a four point slide for Harris since the last Emerson poll that was taken in late August.

The Emerson poll released Tuesday was also taken after last Thursday’s Democratic debate, which shows that much like the second debate, she didn’t do herself any favors with voters in her own state.

Harris isn’t doing any better in national post-debate polls, either:

Just how bad is the California polling information for the Harris campaign? Very bad:

The survey is a sign that Harris may face a difficult battle in her home state’s nominating contest, a delegate-rich election that carries more significance than ever because of an accelerated primary schedule that places it on Super Tuesday, when voters in a dozen states will cast their ballots for the Democratic nomination.

“Senator Kamala Harris is in trouble in her home state. If she is unable to gain momentum in Iowa or New Hampshire, come Super Tuesday she might have a similar fate to Sen. Marco Rubio in 2016, when he was unable to win his home state of Florida and dropped out of the race,” Emerson Polling Director Spencer Kimball said, referring to Rubio’s 2016 loss to President Trump in Florida’s Republican presidential primary.

The Hill also notes that there has never been a candidate who lost their home state in a primary who ultimately won the presidential nomination.

That the Harris campaign has been in a freefall over the last two and a half months is not new news, but the fact that her numbers are in the basement in her home state is a very troubling sign for her campaign. There is no other way they can spin it.

Assuming she qualifies for the 4th Democratic debate next month, you gotta think at this point that she’s only staying in the race to put herself in contention for a veep slot.

Earlier this month, Harris told a Fox News reporter that in spite of the fact that she was polling in the low single digits she should still be considered in the “top tier.” She is in the top tier only in her own mind at this point.

Ilhan Omar’s Excuses for Her Latest Controversy Don’t Add Up

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., listens as Office of Management and Budget Acting Director Russell Vought testifies before the House Budget Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, March 12, 2019, during a hearing on the fiscal year 2020 budget. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

Yesterday, it was noted that something strange happened on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Twitter account. Namely, that she deleted a tweet from seven years ago in which she wished her father a happy Father’s Day. My colleague Elizabeth Vaughn wrote about the initial incident, which you can read here.

This would all seem inauspicious if not for the content involved.

The math is simple. Omar acknowledges in her old tweet that Nur Said was her father. Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was Omar’s mysterious, past husband. In Arabic, the father’s name is the middle name you see here, i.e. Nur Said. Are we really supposed to keep thinking all of this is coincidence?

Omar apparently thinks so, as she put out this statement in response.

So she was calling her father Nur Said as a nickname? Let’s note that’s something that happens in Arabic households. You don’t call a father a completely different surname, especially not in traditional, more fundamentalist households, which Omar was a part of. What “doctored” images is she even talking about? I couldn’t find any proof of that. The threats angle is also weak. If she receives constant threats, why wait until someone points out the discrepancy involving her marrying her brother to run and delete it?

None of this makes any sense at all.

This isn’t going to just go away, nor should it. There’s not just smoke here, there’s fires burning out in the open. Omar has spent years deleting social media posts and purging her online presence. This was long before she even had a major public profile after 2018. She wasn’t doing that because of “death threats” or any other nonsensical excuses. She was covering something up and she continues to do so.

Even the naming conventions that Omar claims don’t add up. It’s is all very confusing (no doubt by design) but you can read about some of glaring red flags here going all the way back to 2016 investigative reporting. Why did her father change his name? Why did he go by Nur Said on Omar’s sister’s marriage certificate? Where’d the name Omar even come from? No one can seem to find any other relatives that go by that name.

Everything here is pointing to immigration fraud and more and more evidence is mounting that she married her brother. The mainstream press won’t touch this and it’s a testament to how useless they are. If a Republican were caught up in something like this, there would be a dozen reporters from The Washington Post alone assigned to digging deeper. Instead, Omar is allowed to obfuscate, refuse to answer questions, and pretend like nothing is suspect. Eventually the truth is going to come out though.

Former Vice President Joe Biden spoke to supporters at the Workers’ Presidential Summit in Philadelphia on Tuesday and touted his proposal for an $8,000 tax credit to pay for childcare costs. He said:

You get a tax break for a racehorse, why in God’s name couldn’t we provide an $8,000 tax credit for everybody who has childcare costs? It would put 720 million women back in the workforce. It would increase the GDP, to sound like a wonk here, by about eight-tenths of one percent. It would grow the economy.

His remarks can be heard in the clip below.

Another blunder by the frontrunner in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Nearly every time Biden speaks, he commits another gaffe. Democrats seem to be slowly coming around to the fact that he will not be able to beat Trump. Although Biden has managed to maintain his lead in most polls, there are signs he is losing ground to Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released on Tuesday questioned 506 Democratic primary voters between September 13-16 about their level of enthusiasm for each candidate. Warren led the field at 35%, Sanders came in at 25% and Biden at 23%. In March, Warren was at 20%, Sanders at 28% and Biden at 33%. (Enthusiasm for Kamala Harris stood at 22% in March and has fallen to 13% in September.)

All of this is to say that primary voters are watching and they’re noticing.

Here are some responses to Biden’s comment on Twitter:

Joe think he’s running to be President of China maybe?

When you want to divide by two, but end up multiplying. And still get it wrong.

Democrats routinely count the recently deceased. Honest mistake.

That 720 million women number is AFTER Joe cures cancer. #MakingSenseWithJoe

Yikes! The US population is 330 million but Joe Biden says a child tax credit would put 720 million women back in the workforce.

Lewandowski Trolls Lawmakers At House Judiciary Committee Hearing; Calls Eric Swalwell ‘President Swalwell’

Today was Day One of the House Judiciary Committee’s impeachment proceedings against President Trump and it can only be described as a trip down the rabbit hole. The hearing was entitled “Presidential Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Power.”

A defiant Corey Lewandowski gave Committee chair Jerry Nadler and the rest of the Democratic members of the committee the respect they deserved – that is to say, very little. He asked for statements to be repeated, for a copy of the report and he refused to answer many their questions. In fact, he behaved a bit like Robert Mueller had during his testimony in July.

The hearing quickly took on a circus-like feel leading several Democrats, including Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) and Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) to threaten to hold Lewandowski in contempt, claiming he was trying to obstruct their investigation. Cicilline told him, “You’re not going to stonewall me and my questioning!” And a very frustrated Nadler called Lewandowski’s behavior “unacceptable.”

Nadler had subpoenaed three witnesses including Rick Dearborn, Rob Porter, and Trump’s former campaign manager and aide, Corey Lewandowski. In his opening statement, Nadler said, “Unfortunately, we learned last night that the White House is blocking the first two from even showing up, and tightly limiting the third. The White House has no authority, legal or otherwise, to give these orders.”

He claimed that “in at least five episodes, evidence laid out in the Special Counsel report established that all the elements of obstruction of justice were met.”

If that were true, the Mueller team would have recommended charges.

Nadler said he would start with one of the most concerning ones. “It is the President ordering the Attorney General, through Mr. Lewandowski, to stop the Special Counsel’s investigation into the president and his campaign.”

The brief video below will give you an idea of the atmosphere inside the chamber.

Lewandowski’s derisive demeanor antagonized the House Dems and made for some fiery exchanges. One of the more memorable of those came when Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) asked Lewandowski to read the words Trump had dictated to him on July 17, 2017. Lewandowski refused to read the words and, to the amusement of the Republicans in the room, repeatedly called him “President Swalwell.” That exchange can be viewed in the tweet below.

Another tense exchange occurred between Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) and Lewandowski, who refused to answer her questions. Jackson-Lee scolded him, “This is a House Judiciary, not a house party.” This can be watched in the tweet below.

The highlight of the day had to have been when Rep. Doug Campbell (R-GA) offered a sharp rebuke to Jerry Nadler for holding this sham of a hearing. Campbell said all you [Democrats] want to do is to put on a show to appease your base and lambasted them for not passing any legislation. Watch the clip in the tweet below.

It was a day of Democratic grandstanding and many of them ended the day looking like buffoons. Clearly they were playing to their liberal bases, but a top Democratic House Judiciary Committee source told NBC News Tuesday that there was another reason for the hearing. The source said “the point of the hearing had been to expose Trump to another possible pathway to impeachment: obstructing Congress by not fully complying with a subpoena.” What a surprise.

Following his testimony, Lewandowski spoke to Fox News’ Martha MacCallum. Watch the video below.

War: AOC endorses progressive primary challenge to centrist House Dem colleague

Westlake Legal Group a-4 War: AOC endorses progressive primary challenge to centrist House Dem colleague The Blog Saikat Chakrabarti primary ocasio-cortez newman lipinski Justice Democrats Illinois House democrats challenge AOC

This was of mild interest until I saw the reaction from the Democrat whom she’s trying to oust.

Now it has my full attention.

Background: Democrat Dan Lipinski represents a safe-ish blue district in Illinois, having succeeded his father in office 15 years ago. He stands out in the House caucus as being a centrist among centrists. How centrist? He, uh, didn’t endorse Obama in 2012. He didn’t vote for ObamaCare in 2010 either. He’s pro-life. And he supported DOMA before the Supreme Court flushed it.

I mean, in fairness to AOC, if you’re looking for someone in Congress who meets the description of “DINO,” it’s Dan Lipinski.

In 2018, after running effectively unopposed for years, he faced the same sort of dangerous primary challenge from the left that Ocasio-Cortez herself successfully mounted against Joe Crowley in New York. Lipinski held on in his race, though, defeating progressive Marie Newman 51/49, a margin of about 2,000 votes. Newman’s running against him again in 2020 and trying to line up big-name left-wing support to push her over the top this time. And so AOC faced a dilemma. On the one hand, nothing would be more natural for her than to back a grassroots progressive “change the party” primary effort in Illinois like the one that swept her into Congress last year in Queens.

But on the other hand, some of her House Democratic colleagues resent her because they fear she’s lining up challengers to them in their districts. You may remember that that issue figured in complaints about her now former chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti was one of the co-founders of the far-left Justice Democrats PAC, the same group that supported AOC against Crowley and is now supporting Newman against Lipinski. His outspoken criticism of centrist Dems in the House and his relationship with the PAC made Democrats from blue districts nervous that he and AOC might try to get them primaried. Hence AOC’s other option here — renounce support for any primary challenges this year in the name of comity, which would improve her relationships with her House colleagues. But it would also piss off progressives who sent her to D.C. to try to remake the party in their image.

Play nice or support the revolution: That was her choice in deciding whether to stay out of Lipinski’s race or support Newman. She chose revolution.

“Marie Newman is a textbook example of one of the ways that we could be better as a party — to come from a deep blue seat and to be championing all the issues we need to be championing,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview.

Of Mr. Lipinski, she said: “The fact that a deep blue seat is advocating for many parts of the Republican agenda is extremely problematic. We’re not talking about a swing state that is being forced to take tough votes.”…

“This campaign is about putting someone in place that is in alignment directly with the district on issues like affordability for the middle class and working families, the Green New Deal,” Ms. Newman said in an interview on Monday, adding that she and Ms. Ocasio-Cortez “share some very similar values.”

Former RNC guy Doug Heye has seen this movie before on the right side of the political aisle:

Targeting Lipinski was the safest, most judicious way for Ocasio-Cortez to dip a toe into the process of primarying her own colleagues. He’s waaaay out on the right wing of the party, after all. And she’s not the first progressive Democrat in Congress to endorse Newman in this race: Rep. Ro Khanna has already done so, notes the Times, and the head of the DCCC had to cancel a fundraiser for Lipinski earlier this year when the left howled at her for trying to prop him up. (The Democratic leadership and the DCCC continue to support his reelection, however.) Lipinski’s also a white guy and some of the House Dems who have been most worried about AOC-backed primary challenges (e.g., Lacy Clay) are black, fearing that their very blue districts make them a prime target for a primary challenge by Justice Democrats. Focusing on Lipinski may be a signal from Ocasio-Cortez that she’ll avoid targeting minority lawmakers. It’s simply the least controversial primary challenge that AOC could possibly have supported.

To everyone, that is, except Dan Lipinski. Here’s that reaction I mentioned up top. Hoo boy.

Those first two paragraphs sound almost Republican, which I suppose is on-brand for Lipinski. But there’s a method to his madness, perhaps: Primary elections in Illinois are open, meaning that you don’t need to register as a member of a party beforehand to vote in its primary on Election Day. Lipinski’s apparently going to try to use AOC against Newman by highlighting her support, hoping that the district’s Republican minority will flood into the Democratic primary and hand him a victory to spite her. Between that, his incumbency, and his family legacy, there’s at least a chance that he’ll hold the seat despite her best efforts. Imagine if the Ocasio-Cortez endorsement ends up as the kiss of death in a blue district.

She didn’t care for Lipinski’s response, by the way:

One last note on this via Jon Ward. If AOC was hesitant to jump into Lipinski’s race, she may have felt obliged after she surprised a few people last week by endorsing Ed Markey for reelection to the Senate in Massachusetts. Left-wing revolutionaries aren’t supposed to back incumbents who are being challenged by young progressives, right? The difference with Markey is that he’s the sponsor in the Senate of her Green New Deal plan. She owed him one and she delivered. We’ll see if it helps him fend off a primary challenge from Joe Kennedy.

Andrew Yang Being Criticized for Perpetuating “Toxic” Stereotype That Asian Americans Are Smart and Successful

In spite of the fact that his polling numbers have consistently remained under 5%, businessman Andrew Yang’s following has boosted him in fundraising and polling enough to qualify him for all three Democratic debates to date.

Though his policy ideas are ones that most conservatives and Republicans wouldn’t support (universal basic income, Medicare for all for starters), he comes across as a likable guy who you wouldn’t mind having a beer with while discussing politics. He also presents himself as a guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously, which you notice when he lightheartedly makes jokes related to the fact that he’s Asian American.

Ironically enough, it is Yang’s occasional quips about his Asian American heritage that have generated criticism from other Asian Americans that the stereotypes he perpetuates about other Asians are “toxic” and harmful … to other minority groups:

During the third Democratic debate, Andrew Yang made a joke that played up an Asian stereotype: “Now, I am Asian, so I know a lot of doctors,” he quipped.

It wasn’t the first time he’d done so. Two months earlier, during the second debate, he told viewers, “The opposite of Donald Trump is an Asian man who likes math.”

Yang has also used such one-liners at rallies, and sold merchandise alluding to these comments, including baseball caps and T-shirts simply emblazoned with the word, “Math.”

Yang’s statements have spurred mixed reactions from the Asian American community. While some of his supporters told Vox that the jokes are cheeky in-group references that acknowledge Yang’s Asianness, other voters are concerned they reinforce longstanding racist stereotypes about Asian Americans and other minority groups.

[…]

While Yang may have innocuous intentions with his comments, as he said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper this past weekend, the remarks are nonetheless reaffirming toxic tropes.

What is most “toxic” about Yang’s use of Asian stereotypes? Vox.com’s Li Zhou explains:

There’s a major reason why Yang’s broader use of stereotypes is so harmful: they help reaffirm a trope about Asian Americans commonly known as the “model minority” myth, a term that’s pretty much as offensive as it sounds.

As the name suggests, this myth, which has previously been used to treat Asian Americans as a monolithic group, implies that Asians are fixated on school and certain professions, and is damaging for a lot of reasons. It not only obscures the diversity within the Asian American community, it’s also intended to demean other minority groups, Alton Wang writes for the Washington Post:

‘Writing in the New York Times in 1966, the sociologist William Petersen coined the term “model minority” to describe the post-World War II rise of Japanese Americans, even in the face of ongoing prejudice. He contrasted their success to that of what he called “problem minorities” (a term that he set in quotation marks that clearly pointed toward black Americans), groups pulled down by oppression to the point where they would greet even equal opportunity with “either self-defeating apathy or a hatred so all-consuming as to be self-destructive.”’

[…]

The myth has been used to pit different minority groups against one another, Wang writes.

I gotta admit that I was left scratching my head after reading the Vox piece.

First things first, I have never heard of the term “model minority myth” and I’m guessing the vast majority of people who watched the Democratic debates and who read up on Andrew Yang afterwards out of curiosity don’t know what it means, either.

For whatever it meant back then, the stereotype today of Asians being smart, well-educated people who work hard to be successful is meant to be a compliment in most cases, not an insult. In the vast majority of instances, it is not used as a backwards swipe at other minority communities, either.

I suspect that most of the people who are characterizing Yang’s comments as equating to negative stereotypes are really just looking for something to be offended about. If Yang qualifies for the next debate, hopefully he’ll use the opportunity to say these three words to his “woke” critics: Get over yourselves.

That NYTs Claim That Seven People Corroborated the Ramirez Accusation Against Kavanaugh Turns Out to Be Nonsense

It’s amazing how this keeps happening.

As I wrote this morning, The New York Times has covered themselves in glory with their latest attempted hit on Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The original article in question was based on a new book written by Times reporters. Unlike Mollie Hemingway’s brilliant, well researched book, these “reporters” set out with an agenda and did everything they could to form the narrative they wanted to push. That means shifting and molding supposed evidence into what they desire vs. what reality is dictating.

Want proof? One of the claims made in the book is that the Ramirez incident was the “talk of the campus.” They also claimed seven instances of corroboration to prove this, but when you put them  under scrutiny, almost none of it holds up.

Credit to Byron York for researching this further.

Pogrebin and Kelly claim that extensive evidence supports the Ramirez allegation. “At least seven people, including Ms. Ramirez’s mother, heard about the Yale incident long before Mr. Kavanaugh was a federal judge,” they write in the article. “Two of those people were classmates who learned of it just days after the party occurred, suggesting that it was discussed among students at the time.”

The article did not, however, discuss what any of those seven people actually said about the alleged incident. Nevertheless, partisans quickly seized on it to support their position on Kavanaugh. There was “substantial corroboration” for Ramirez’s story, tweeted Susan Hennessey, editor of the influential blog Lawfare. For their part, some Democratic presidential candidates — Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Beto O’Rourke, and Pete Buttigieg — cited the story as (additional) cause for Kavanaugh to be impeached.

So what’s the truth here? Who were these seven people and did they actually provide corroboration of the account? In a word, no.

None of the seven are able to tie Kavanaugh to the supposed event. Even the account of Ramirez’s own mother leaves more questions than answers.

Something happened at Yale.

That’s literally all she told her mother, who is now being used as corroborative evidence.

Let’s also remember this was 35 years ago on a college campus. There were likely no shortage of stories over the years involving drunk people exposing themselves. Let’s live in reality and admit that college students do stupid things. Some of these claims could be remembering totally different happenings. Regardless, none of this provides any corroboration that Kavanaugh himself did anything untoward.

Despite that, the book says the above is enough to make Ramirez’s claims “ring true.”

That is enough for Pogrebin and Kelly, who conclude, “The claims of Deborah Ramirez, while not proven by witnesses, also ring true.” Perhaps that will convince some readers. For others: When anti-Kavanaugh partisans cite “substantial corroboration” for Ramirez’s allegation, it’s good to keep in mind who really said what.

Since when is “ringing true” a journalistic standard? It’s the same nonsense we heard all through the Russia-gate fiasco. In fact, “ringing true” is often based on one’s own partisan sensibilities. These writers wanted to believe Ramirez, so they carefully sought out evidence to confirm their biases with no thought for whether any of it was true or could be proven. That’s not journalism, it’s activism.

Honestly, and perhaps this will get me in trouble, but I think this entire ordeal is ridiculous. Even if Kavanaugh exposed himself at a party, that hardly disqualifies him for a Supreme Court position 35 years later. College campuses are not bastions of responsibility and morality. The Times trying to dredge this back up and presenting it as far more than it is follows a pattern of senseless, partisan hit jobs being perpetrated on Republicans. From what we’ve seen of this new book so far, it looks to be a dumpster fire of narrative pushing and misrepresentations. No one should take it seriously after how badly these two writers and their work have crashed and burned the last few days.
