Majority of Americans Believe We’re On the Verge of a Second Civil War Poll Reveals

Westlake Legal Group nra-constitution-620x349 Majority of Americans Believe We’re On the Verge of a Second Civil War Poll Reveals War republicans polls poll Politics Political Discourse Front Page Stories democrats civility civil war America Allow Media Exception

A new poll conducted by Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service conducted a poll and found a shocking statistic that showed the majority of Americans believed that a second civil war is looming in the near future.

The poll found that when American citizens were asked to rate the current state of political civility from a scale of 0 (no political division) to 100 (political division to the point of civil war), the responses averaged around 67.23. The poll noted that 7 in 10 Americans believe that America is on the verge of a violent war with itself.

The poll did come with odd answers from those took it. The majority of people wanted compromise from political leaders but wanted leaders to stand firm in their opposition according to GU:

“Our Civility Poll finds that eighty percent of voters say that they both demand compromise from political leaders, but want political leaders who will stand up to the other side. That creates mixed messages for even the most skilled political leader trying to decide whether to be a fighter or a dealmaker,” said Mo Elleithee, Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute of Politics and Public Service.

This is most likely a desire for Americans to have more give from the other side while they wish their own leaders to remain immovable. This is not going to help the situation at all if both sides are expecting flexibility from their opponents while willing to give up none. Should a politician do what the voting base expects their opponents to do, it won’t sit well, and thus you may find many politicians unwilling to budge at all, furthering the divide.

Some in the media also suggest a civil war is looming, such as National Review and Foreign Policy. Others believe it has already begun, such as Rush Limbaugh, who said we are currently in a “cold civil war.”

According to Limbaugh, the Democrat establishment may be the one who drives us into violence due to their desire to obtain and retain power by any means necessary, including finding ways to kick Trump out of office and punish the civilian population for supporting him, or ideals like his.

The idea has also sprung up on social media. Oftentimes during a gun debate, ideas would be floated around about military involvement in the seizing of guns, which usually leads to the discussion of civil war and how that scenario would go.

At this time, the radicalism of the left has driven many to openly advocate for the termination of various rights outlined in the Bill of Rights. Many have stated that this will result in war as the American people will face down the government, topple it, and reinstate a new one as the founders suggested we do in the event of a tyrannical government takeover.

Other indicators that we may be approaching levels of nationwide violence is the constant escalation of violence by radical protesters on the left, including Antifa, who openly threaten political dissenters with violence, and sometimes death.

Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL). Photo via Representative Matt Gaetz on Facebook.

Yesterday, I felt very discouraged over the lack of action by Republican lawmakers, particularly those in the House, to push back against the aggressive, unjust and undemocratic agenda and tactics of the Democrats. I may have spoken too soon.

As we heard, over two dozen Republican lawmakers stormed into the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) where Democrats, led by Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff, were set to interview Pentagon official Laura Cooper.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL)  appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show last night and said, “We had the audacity to want to know what in the world was going on behind closed doors where Democrats have engaged in a strategy of secret interviews, selective leaks, theatrical weird performances of transcripts that never happened and then lies about whistleblowers. It’s reasonable to suggest that we would want more transparency on behalf of the people that we represent.”

Carlson asked if they had a right under Congressional rules to demand transparency.

Gaetz replied that “there are no rules, Tucker. If we had rules, Nancy Pelosi would have put this to a vote and established rules like what happened for President Clinton, like what happened for President Nixon. The Democrats want to preserve the most operational flexibility, so if they’re going to have a world with no rules, we gotta stop thinking that we can use the Marquis of Queensbury rules of engagement when we’re fighting against an angry pack of rabid hyenas. And that’s what we’re facing. And I think the President is right. As Republicans, we need to be tougher in exposing this for the kangaroo court that it is.

“Can you impeach a President without taking a vote?” asked Carlson.

He answered, “That seems to be the Democrats’ strategy…But Democrats have learned a lesson from Russia. In the Russia investigation, they did hold open hearings. We saw Robert Mueller in his failure to adequately defend his report. We saw the Corey Lewandowski hearing which was just a total disaster for Democrats. They’ve moved away from allowing Republicans to have cross examination, thorough review, check testimony against documents and timelines and they’re just trying to use the natural advantage they have with the mainstream media to have secret interviews and selective leaks. They’re trying to pollute the American electorate with these lies about the President.”

Gaetz called on Americans to contact their lawmakers. Then, he asked a rhetorical question. “Why doesn’t President Trump get the same due process from Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats that Newt Gingrich and the Republicans.”

Carlson asked Gaetz how long this will go on.

“They don’t really want an extended process because they can’t withstand any review of the facts over a long period of time. I think we’re on a rocket docket to impeachment in the House. I think impeachment was a functional certainty the moment that Nancy Pelosi grabbed that gavel. Because the radical left today cannot win a fair debate or a fair election, so everything is about trying to destroy and to deplatform those who champion the America first agenda and we just got to stop reading and reacting. We’ve got to be very proactive in terms of exposing this corruption to the country.”

I applaud yesterday’s move by House Republicans. We’ve got to see much more of it. Gaetz is absolutely correct in that they had been using Marquis of Queensbury rules of engagement when in a fight against an angry pack of rabid hyenas. They’d been showing up at gun fights armed with knives. Now they realize they need to bring their guns.

House Republicans led by Jim Jordan (R-OH) are demanding to interview the whistleblower in person. I can’t imagine how it would be possible to impeach a President without the testimony of the individual who triggered it.

On Wednesday, Fox News reported the existence of a third piece of evidence that demonstrates the whistleblower’s substantial liberal bias. They don’t know what that evidence consists of yet, they just reported that it exists. The article says, “Though Fox News has learned that an additional element of possible bias was identified by the whistleblower, its nature remains unclear. Fox News has previously reported the whistleblower is a registered Democrat and had a prior work history with a senior Democrat.”

In an interview with Sean Hannity on Monday night, President Trump said the one positive thing he could say about Democrats is that they stick together and they fight. The same cannot be said about Republicans. He is so right about both of those statements.

Storming the SCIF was a good start. But Republicans need to maintain pressure on the Democrats. They must come together now and fight for the President.

In a Shocking Turn of Event Vichy Conservatives are Outraged By GOP Representatives Invading the Holy Sanctum of the House SCIF

Yesterday, a couple of dozen GOP Representatives bulled their way into the Sensitive Compartment Information Facility in the House of Representatives in order to disrupt the Star Chamber proceedings being conducted by California Democrat Adam Schiff. This is allegedly related to impeachment, but as it is being handled by the House Intelligence Committee rather than Fat Jerry’s Judiciary Committee, one doubts it has anything at all to do with impeachment and is merely a vehicle for Schiff to leak bullsh** to a credulous and culpable press.

The immediate effect was that virtually every Twitter lefty and NeverTrumper, particularly those who have never in their lives held a security clearance, to suddenly become experts on storing classified information and mobile devices in SCIFs. This is knowledge the obtained sometime after Top Secret reconnaissance satellite imagery, which can only come from within a SCIF, was found on Hillary Clinton’s phone.

For overwrought fearmongering and sheer Chicken-Little-ism, this thread can’t be beat. EVER.

Just because a SCIF CAN contain classified information doesn’t mean it DOES. The facility is constructed to prevent eavesdropping of any variety and Schiff was using it as a prop to make his endeavor seem much more serious than either it or he are and to prevent people he doesn’t want in depostions from attending. Essentially, he’s using it as Calvin and Hobbes used their tree house.

READ: No, Republicans Entering the SCIF to Protest Schiff Did Not Endanger National Security

I’d like to say I was shocked by what happened afterwards, but I wasn’t. Quin Hillyer was on the case

though I think Ace nailed that one cold

and this

Good heaven. This is like someone writing bad parody of a Bulwark article topped off by a bad parody of a Rick Wilsom comment on that Bulwark parody. It is not only insulting to the reader and beclowing to the writer, it is just the inchoate cry of NeverTrumpers who are shocked that the GOP is not going along with Schiff ugly little bit of theater. For people who have been beating the rest of us over the head with their purity and high minded principles, it is no surprise to find those principles have evaporated when they would have demanded that Schiff adhere to historical process.

Once you clear away the bullsh** about the SCIF, you’re left with a very simple binary decision. Do you think that Schiff’s inquiry is legitimate or not? If you do, and you’re fine with an impeachment process that is diametrically opposed to the Clinton and Nixon processes, then you are probably upset because it takes away from the presumed gravity of the situation (you’ll note I did mention Schiff was involved). If, on the other hand, you think the ongoing process is a travesty and a clown show, then you have no obligation to treat it as anything other than that and demonstrate to the world just how ridiculous it is.

I am clearly and unapologetic in the latter category. The Democrats have turned the most solemn duty of the House of Representatives into a farce. If they want to impeach President Trump, they can do so. But they should have the courage to follow precedent and traditions in order to try to establish legitimacy rather than make it an obvious political lynching. And since they have created this farce, then the GOP has every right and every obligation to join in and make it the Platonic Ideal of farce. I hope there is much more of this and I hope in continues until the Democrats agree to observe the same process used in the last two presidential impeachments.

Shockingly, the Media Absolutely Loved Disruptive Congressional Sit-Ins Until Republicans Did It

Stop me if you’ve heard this before. The media lauded Democrats as brave and revolutionary when they did something but now decry it as dangerous and a breach of decorum when Republicans do it. Shocking, right?

That’s exactly the dynamic at play with the current consternation over Republicans entering the SCIF (which they absolutely have a legal right to do as Congressional members) and we’ve got receipts.

You may recall back in 2016 when Democrats decided to shut down all proceedings by staging a sit-in on the House floor. For nearly two days, they stayed there.

Here was the media’s response.

The slobbering praise was so bad that NBC reporters were lauding the fact that Kim Kardashian was tweeting about it. You heard words like “historic” over and over. Brooke Baldwin is almost salivating over John Lewis’ “impassioned” speech. Chuck Todd said this would be the “recipe” for getting a vote. Comparisons to the Civil Rights movement were made.

It was unbelievably positive. There were zero concerns about decorum, holding up other work, or the fact that it was clearly just a political stunt. None at all.

But when Republicans do it in protest, it’s suddenly really, really awful. Funny how that works.

If you read the responses to that tweet, what you’ll see is a ton of “THAT’S DIFFERENT!!” hot takes because of the SCIF being involved.

Here are the facts, some of which I shared in a piece last night. The SCIF is legally accessible by all Congressional members. Period. The fact that Schiff is choosing to abuse it does not turn it into his own personal sanctuary. There was also nothing going on that was classified within those proceedings and no matter what happens in there, authorities would have been checking for breaches afterward. That’s standard procedure. They don’t otherwise have no security measures unless Republicans hand in cellphones while inside. To suggest such is to paint a false picture of what is actually occurring.

What we are seeing here is pure hypocrisy, plain and simple. These media giants absolutely loved political stunts before they were against political stunts. No one should be taking their criticisms as anything other than more partisan rancor.

Once Again, the Left Promotes Violence Toward the Right, This Time Against Rand Paul

It wasn’t but a handful of days ago that the left and the media were losing their collective minds over a year old video of Trump’s head being superimposed over a character during a scene from a violent movie. We were told that this kind of promotion of violence was inexcusable and would only promote real-life violence.

Since then, we’ve had instances of leftists promoting violence against the right, including Antifa telling a church that they’d bring out a guillotine if they played a movie about Jordan Peterson and a woman being assaulted for being pro-Trump.

If you include all the other instances of violence being overly celebrated by the left against the right, you’ll find that the pattern is that it’s okay for the left to visit harm on the right, but the right better not even joke about doing it to the left.

We can now add Bette Midler to those who hold that position.

On Wednesday, Midler became angry over Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul calling the Kurds “ingrates” for throwing refuse at American troops despite fighting to help free them from the clutches of ISIS. Midler didn’t take that well and, instead of putting up a well thought out and reasonable argument, told everyone to be thankful for Rand Paul’s violent neighbor who assaulted him.

“I DO NOT promote violence,” began Midler before she continued by promoting violence, “but… Rand Paul says the Kurds are being “ingrates” for taking their frustrations out on US troops. Which is a good reminder for us all to be more grateful for the neighbor who beat the sh*t out of Rand Paul.”

Midler is, of course, referring to the attack on Paul by his neighbor. Paul suffered six broken ribs, damage to his lungs, and two bouts of pneumonia as a result of the attack on him. Paul described the recovery as a “living hell.”

This attack and the celebration of it is just one more example of why the left shouldn’t be taken seriously when it begins hyperventilating about “violence” from the right. Between the promotion of attacks, actual attacks, and groups like Antifa that actually promote further violence, the left has no room to talk.

This is actually the second time Midler has celebrated the violence against Rand Paul. The first was in February of last year when she asked where Paul’s neighbor was after he filibustered the Senate to stop Republicans from raising spending caps.

She’s not the only celebrity that celebrated Paul’s attack. Tom Arnold has also tweeted his approval of the violence Paul suffered, and his tweet was retweeted by Rep. Ilhan Omar.

A Boomlet Builds for Retired Admiral William McRaven to Jump Into the Democrat Primary Field

FILE – In this Aug. 21, 2014, file photo, U.S. Navy Adm. William McRaven, the next chancellor of the University of Texas System, addresses the Texas Board of Regents, in Austin, Texas. McRaven is running into political problems in his role as chancellor of the University of Texas System. The retired Navy admiral who planned the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden faces an uncertain future as chancellor, as his three-year contract expires at the end of 2017. After multiple clashes with lawmakers, and a new makeup of the Board of Regents he works for, it remains an open question as to whether he will be back. McRaven is the second highest paid public university president in the nation making $1.5 million. (AP Photo/Eric Gay, File)

A week ago, retired Admiral William McRaven wrote an op-ed for the New York Times in which he loudly proclaimed that President Trump was a, in his words, danger to the republic.

These men and women, of all political persuasions, have seen the assaults on our institutions: on the intelligence and law enforcement community, the State Department and the press. They have seen our leaders stand beside despots and strongmen, preferring their government narrative to our own. They have seen us abandon our allies and have heard the shouts of betrayal from the battlefield. As I stood on the parade field at Fort Bragg, one retired four-star general, grabbed my arm, shook me and shouted, “I don’t like the Democrats, but Trump is destroying the Republic!”

Those words echoed with me throughout the week. It is easy to destroy an organization if you have no appreciation for what makes that organization great. We are not the most powerful nation in the world because of our aircraft carriers, our economy, or our seat at the United Nations Security Council. We are the most powerful nation in the world because we try to be the good guys. We are the most powerful nation in the world because our ideals of universal freedom and equality have been backed up by our belief that we were champions of justice, the protectors of the less fortunate.

But, if we don’t care about our values, if we don’t care about duty and honor, if we don’t help the weak and stand up against oppression and injustice — what will happen to the Kurds, the Iraqis, the Afghans, the Syrians, the Rohingyas, the South Sudanese and the millions of people under the boot of tyranny or left abandoned by their failing states?

If our promises are meaningless, how will our allies ever trust us? If we can’t have faith in our nation’s principles, why would the men and women of this nation join the military? And if they don’t join, who will protect us? If we are not the champions of the good and the right, then who will follow us? And if no one follows us — where will the world end up?

President Trump seems to believe that these qualities are unimportant or show weakness. He is wrong. These are the virtues that have sustained this nation for the past 243 years. If we hope to continue to lead the world and inspire a new generation of young men and women to our cause, then we must embrace these values now more than ever.

And if this president doesn’t understand their importance, if this president doesn’t demonstrate the leadership that America needs, both domestically and abroad, then it is time for a new person in the Oval Office — Republican, Democrat or independent — the sooner, the better. The fate of our Republic depends upon it.

I found the piece to be stunning in its historical illiteracy:

We were reminded that the Greatest Generation went to war because it believed that we were the good guys — that wherever there was oppression, tyranny or despotism, America would be there.

Seriously. This is utter bullsh**. The Greatest Generation went to war because it had war brought to it, first by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor and then, a few days later, by a German declaration of war against us. The Greatest Generation fought to kick ass and go home. And, on the way, we turned over half of Europe the the Soviet Union and forcibly repatriated Russians who had fought against the USSR.

And I was also shocked by the hubris and the embrace of the failed, disastrous Responsibility to Protect (R2P) strategy that kicked off a bloodbath in Libya and an international humanitarian nightmare in Syria. Will fathers and mothers be more or less likely to send their sons and (under the aegis of the flag officers of McRaven’s cohort) daughters off to random wars of feel good, or would they prefer their kid only be put in harm’s way if some easily articulated national security threat is at hand?

But, because OrangeManBad, all he had to do was to write this and he was a hero. Had a flag officer written a similar critique about Obama, and I truly think Obama did an immense amount of damage to our foreign policy and to our domestic politics, he would have been excoriated as some sort of racist.

McRaven’s op ed did not take place in a vacuum. It took place in the context of a presidential contest between an incumbent president so loathed by the left that there is literally no lie they will not tell nor any fable they will not disbelieve about him, and a field of Democrats so weak that they make the Seven Dwarfs of the Democrat 1988 field look like a gathering in the Athenian Acropolis. This is from a Politico story titled ‘Can Any of These People Beat Trump?’ (Watching the Democratic debate with a serious candidate who wasn’t invited to the party and can hardly believe what’s unfolding before his eyes.)

This, Bennet fears, is how Trump might luck into a second term. Oh, sure, the president will continue to scare moderates and independents with his erratic behavior. But Bennet wonders if Democrats might scare them even more—what with talk of seizing guns, banning fracking, guaranteeing health coverage to undocumented immigrants, raising taxes across the board, imposing political litmus tests on churches, and of course, eliminating private insurance for more than 150 million people.

“Just listen to this debate,” Bennet says, motioning toward the television. “Medicare for All shouldn’t even have made it to the debate stage. I mean, we’re a free country, and that’s fine. But of the Democrats who won in 2018, in those suburban districts, all but one person won their primary running on the public option—against candidates who supported Medicare for All. I understand this has been Bernie’s thing forever. But for some of the leading candidates to sign on to his bill gave it legitimacy. It’s just…”

He drifts off, shaking his head.

“We’re going to pick a policy we can’t even unify Democrats around, much less bring in others who could support it from the outside. Which means we’ll wind up fighting a losing battle for that instead of achieving the other stuff,” Bennet adds. “That’s not catering to the people I talk to at town halls; it’s for the people on Twitter and the people on cable news at night.”

As the debate approaches the two-hour mark, Bennet goes silent, gazing emotionlessly at the television for a prolonged stretch. Finally, I ask what’s on his mind. “I’m sitting here thinking, ‘Who can beat Trump?’” he says. “Can any of these people beat Trump?”

The combination of the weakness of the field, OrangeManBad, and the Democrat propensity so swoon and genuflect to anyone if you put enough gold braid, stars, and medals on them gets you this:

And it is sort of hard to believe this was not the intended effect of the op ed

If the Democrats want McRaven, they are entitled to him. For all of his bloviating about values, when he had a chance to actually stand up for something, he folded like a cheap suit. He had the chance to take a stand against a corrupt admissions practice of the University of Texas System, of which he was chancellor, that allowed the lackwit offspring of Texas politicians to get guaranteed enrollment. Instead, he quashed the ongoing investigation. Oh, and he was adamantly opposed to firearms on campus and very much in favor of in-state tuition for illegals. If they think his military resume is going to carry him forward, they are sadly mistaken. Any flag officer, good or bad, is going to carry a lot of baggage and have a lot of detractors with a lot of documentation.

As a friend of mine says on email:

This admixture of loud proclamation of civic virtue with corrupt and unapologetic elite self-dealing is, of course, precisely how we got Trump.

The greater problem is that McRaven has only a tangential attachment to the society he devoted his life to defending. As much as I loved my time in the Army, I’d never claim that running any military organization is remotely as complicated as dealing with a pluralistic society where 40+% of the population will oppose you out of hand, and where no decision is ever quite final.

This is mostly wishcasting and desperation, but the Democrats seem intent upon finding their Man of Horseback to usher in a Progressive Garden of Eden. None of the current field can either mount a horse, or even pick it out of a line up. McRaven just may be their man.

Why it’s almost as if history were repeating itself. The New York City Bar Association has demanded that Attorney General William Barr recuse himself from the DOJ investigation into the July 25th telephone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Bar Association issued a statement on Wednesday which began:

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has a unique role in safeguarding the rule of law under the Constitution. By failing to recuse himself from DOJ’s review of the Ukraine Matter, Attorney General William P. Barr has undermined that role. To help remedy that failure, the New York City Bar Association urges that Mr. Barr recuse himself from any ongoing or future review by DOJ of Ukraine-related issues in which Mr. Barr is allegedly involved. If he fails to do so, he should resign or, failing that, be subject to sanctions, including possible removal, by Congress.

The statement reminded Barr of a statement he’d made during his nomination process. He had said, “The American people have to know that there are places in the government where the rule of law, not politics, holds sway and where they will be treated fairly based solely on the facts and the evenhanded application of the law. The Department of Justice must be that place.”

(Because Congress surely is not.)

It states that Barr “appears to have participated in the DOJ review of the whistleblower’s complaint and its decision not to forward that complaint to Congress…This is a serious violation of his obligation to protect the DOJ from reasonable questions as to its impartiality in the investigation of the Ukraine Matter.”

And it concludes with, “We hope that Mr. Barr will act promptly to remedy, at least in part, his prior failure to recuse himself from the Ukraine Matter. If, however, he chooses not to do so, we believe he must resign his position as Attorney General.”

The officers of the NYC Bar Association must think American voters are among the stupidest people in the world. They would like to see history repeat itself. ‘If we can force AG Barr to recuse himself just as his predecessor, Jeff Sessions, did in the Russia probe, we just might get Trump this time.’

Sessions fateful recusal paved the way for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to take over. The incredibly conflicted Rosenstein made the inappropriate decision to appoint a Special Counsel to investigate the President’s possible collusion with Russia followed by his obstruction of justice to end it.

You may recall that President Trump had asked Rosenstein to prepare a memo which listed the reasons why then-FBI Director James Comey should be fired. After Trump had fired Comey, he released this memo and the backlash against Rosenstein was fierce. In a highly emotional state and desperately wanting to redeem himself in the eyes of the deep state, he struck back at the President with his announcement that he had appointed a Special Counsel. Rosenstein’s ill-conceived decision put the President and the country through the agony of the Mueller probe.

After it became clear that Mueller wasn’t able to deliver the goods and hellbent on finding something new with which to destroy Trump, Democrats seized upon the July 25th Trump/Zelensky telephone call.

The officers of the NYC Bar Association are very much creatures of the deep state. And their call for AG Barr to recuse himself is a purely political act.

Faced with the imminent exposure of the massive fraud they planned and executed against first candidate Donald Trump and then President Trump, Democrats have weaponized all of the resources at their disposal to prevent it.

They were especially spooked by last weekend’s news that, based on new evidence, Barr and U.S. Attorney John Durham have added staff and expanded their investigation of the origins of Spygate. Durham is closing in on the truth and they are feeling the heat.

The issues raised in the NYC Bar Association’s statement would more appropriately apply to the House Democrats latest gambit to impeach President Trump based on the Zelensky call.

Adhering to the standards they cite in their statement, Adam Schiff should recuse himself from leading the “impeachment inquiry.” After all, his staffers met with the whistleblower before he submitted his complaint to the Intelligence Community Inspector General. Wouldn’t that make Adam Schiff a fact witness? Additionally, Schiff’s intense and obvious hatred towards the President kind of blows up the “impartiality” requirement. In the same way, Rod Rosenstein should have recused himself from oversight of the Mueller investigation. He participated in the Oval Office meeting where Comey’s firing was discussed. He even wrote the memo making the case for why he should be fired. Would that not make Rosenstein a witness in the case? And although we didn’t know it at the time, Rosenstein, as part of his idea to remove the President from office via the 25th Amendment, even discussed wearing a wire into the Oval Office to record the President. He said he was never checked when he entered the White House.

Their hypocrisy is breathtaking.

Their behavior has been so extreme, it brings to mind the story of Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-WI) whose attempt to rid the government of communists in the late 1940s and early 1950s, justified in the beginning, developed into a dangerous obsession. He became consumed by it. His actions became more and more ruthless and unhinged over the years.

During the spectacle of the Army-McCarthy hearings, McCarthy questioned Boston lawyer Joseph Welch, whom the Army had hired for their defense. After an unreasonable line of questioning about a lawyer who worked for his law firm:

Welch responded with the immortal lines that ultimately ended McCarthy’s career: “Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness.” When McCarthy tried to continue his attack, Welch angrily interrupted, “Let us not assassinate this lad further, senator. You have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?”

Have the Democrats no sense of decency?

Tulsi Gabbard to Hillary: It’s time to step down from your throne

Westlake Legal Group c-3 Tulsi Gabbard to Hillary: It’s time to step down from your throne tulsi gabbard throne The Blog Syria nuclear Hillary Clinton Foreign Policy democrats 2020

A leftover from yesterday. She’s milking this Hillary feud for all it’s worth, for perfectly sound reasons: Hillary’s unpopular, she’s the face of Democratic electoral failure, and she’s the embodiment of the hawkish Wall-Street-friendly neoliberalism that Gabbard’s cohort on the party’s left wing detests. The obvious thing to do for a candidate who’s struggled to get traction in the primary is to accept the gift Clinton gave her when she called her a “Russian asset” in an interview recently by training her fire on Hillary going forward. Who knows? Maybe anti-Clinton sentiment among progressives will earn Tulsi a second look.

Doesn’t seem to be happening yet, though, if you believe the latest polling.

In fact, given how impressive Gabbard is on paper and onstage, it’s sort of shocking how badly she’s doing in the primary this year.

Mediaite dings Gabbard for claiming in that clip that overthrowing Qaddafi made the problem of global nuclear proliferation worse. Didn’t Qaddafi gives up his nuclear program years *before* we backed the uprising against him? Yes, but Gabbard’s point, I think, is that other rogue regimes — North Korea, foremost — have learned a perverse lesson from Qaddafi’s downfall. Namely, he gained nothing from the United States by cooperating with us on nukes, not even a firm promise that we wouldn’t turn on him later. On the contrary, if Qaddafi had kept his nuclear program and eventually developed weapons we wouldn’t have dared to intervene in Libya on the rebels’ side for fear of how the madman might have reacted. Fast forward almost a decade and Kim Jong Un has successfully leveraged his own nuclear arsenal for fawning diplomatic treatment from the president of the United States. That’s what Gabbard is pointing to here. The Obama/Hillary decision to reward Qaddafi’s denuclearization with death convinced other strongmen not to denuclearize.

But I digress. Is this new strategy of slamming Hillary paying off for her? Well, in the three polls taken since October 18, when Clinton’s “Russian asset” comments emerged, Gabbard’s polled at three, zero, and two points, good for an average of 1.6. That’s … right around where she’s been polling all along, possibly a tiny bit of improvement but clearly nothing to signify real legs for her from this incident. Maybe if Clinton had attacked her earlier in the race, before Democratic voters had settled on a top three or four among the field, it might have mattered.

Or maybe not. As I say, a candidate with as much going for her as Gabbard should already have been pulling better than one or two points in most polls before this Hillary incident. She has congressional experience, military experience, converses fluently in policy issues, especially foreign policy, she’s preternaturally poised and self-assured onstage, she’s telegenic, and she’s younger than anyone else in the field except Buttigieg. She seems plenty left-ish enough for most progressives too. You would think she’d at least be keeping pace with Mayor Pete, but she’s gone nowhere. Why? We could blame her Assad apologetics or her youthful support for conversion therapy for gays as red flags, but I suspect it’s the right’s interest in her — and her willingness to welcome that interest, with multiple appearances on Fox News — that’s scared off most liberals. It’s strange that she would court those votes, replete with cameos on Tucker Carlson’s show, knowing how it risks alienating her core constituency of progressives. Her party’s base loathes Carlson and was destined to find her suspicious because she doesn’t. That’s why conspiracy theories like “Tulsi’s a Russian asset” follow her around: Absent an obvious motive to make nice with righties, critics grasp for ulterior motives.

Her support among righty populists and even alt-righters is also hard to understand in turn. If it’s a foreign policy thing, is her foreign policy really that different from, say, Bernie Sanders’s? All of this explains why you see “What’s up with Tulsi Gabbard?” takes in the media way more than you do, say, “What’s up with Amy Klobuchar?” takes. Gabbard’s strategy, such as it is, is difficult to discern and so is the reason for her unique appeal to segments of the other party. She may be the only candidate running for president this year on either side of the aisle who has more fans on the other side of it than on her own.

Say this for Tulsi’s lefty supporters, though: They’re loyal.

See why Clinton’s worried about Gabbard going third-party? For an outsized segment of her supporters, it’s Tulsi or bust with respect to them turning out to vote Democratic next year.

In lieu of an exit question, go read Becket Adams regarding a very belated correction by big media to what Hillary actually said about Gabbard in that now famous interview. She did call her a “Russian asset,” but when she said that “they” are grooming her to run as an independent candidate, she (allegedly) meant that Trump and the GOP were grooming her, not the Russians. That is, Clinton might not be accusing Gabbard of being in cahoots with Moscow to influence the race next fall, just of being a useful idiot who’s following her own Kremlin-friendly foreign policy preferences.

Death knell? Send money to Julian Castro or campaign ends in 10 days

Westlake Legal Group JulianCastro Death knell? Send money to Julian Castro or campaign ends in 10 days The Blog Julian Castro democrats Cory Booker campaign contributions 2020 election 2020 Democrat candidates

Hey, it worked for Cory Booker. Just a month ago, Booker sounded the alarm to his supporters – send him $1.7 million in nine days or his campaign would be kaput. He met his deadline and now Julian Castro is making the same plea. Castro needs $800,000 within the next 10 days to keep his campaign afloat. That sounds like a bargain compared to Booker’s goal.

Let’s be honest here, Julian Castro is not going to be the Democrat nominee for president in 2020. He’s only registering at 0.6 at Real Clear Politics. That puts him ahead of only three others – Tim Ryan, Marianne Williamson, and Steve Bullock. Of the first four contests, Castro only registers in two states – Nevada and South Carolina. In both of those states, he registers at .5. So, at this point, he’s really only hoping to stay in for long enough to be considered as the choice for vice-president.

Nonetheless, Julian persists. He needs to find some supporters who are willing to toss some donations into the dumpster fire that is his campaign. The clock is ticking.

“If I can’t raise $800,000 in the next 10 days, I will have no choice but to end my race for president,” Castro’s campaign wrote in an email to supporters. “I’m asking you to fight for me like never before. If I don’t meet this deadline, I won’t have the resources to keep my campaign running.”

Castro has not qualified for the November Democrat debate. He has until November 13 to meet the polling requirement, which is at a higher threshold than previous debates. The November debate threshold requires a candidate to register 3 percent in four approved polls to qualify. At this rate, Castro would be lucky to break 1 percent, let alone 3 percent. His campaign acknowledges that if he fails to earn a place on the debate stage, his campaign is toast. More money is needed for greater outreach on the campaign trail in the form of advertising seems to be the message.

Maya Rupert, Castro’s campaign manager, referred to the money shortage as the campaign’s biggest challenge yet.

“Unfortunately, we do not see a path to victory that doesn’t include making the November debate stage, and without a significant uptick in our fundraising, we cannot make that debate,” she said in a statement.

His best fundraising efforts are not enough to surpass the money raised by the top tier candidates. He is really low on cash for a national campaign.

Castro last week reported his best fundraising quarter thus far: $3.5 million. But it fell well short of what those in a higher tier of the race brought in: Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders ($25.3 million); Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren ($24.6 million); South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg ($19.1 million); and former Vice President Joe Biden ($15.2 million.)

Castro, who has kept a full travel schedule, also reported sinking perilously low in available campaign cash — to $675,000 Oct. 1.

Cory Booker’s campaign received about half of the donations needed for his campaign to continue within the first two days after his plea went out. In the case of Castro, his campaign spokesman said the first day’s fundraising goal was met. He didn’t, however, say exactly the amount of that goal. Sawyer Hackett said the money will be needed to help with the efforts to meet the polling requirement, like organizing in early states.

“Organizing, TV advertising, digital advertising, being able to pay to go to these candidate forums and have a presence at these statewide events — all of that,” Hackett said.

“The problem is that there’s no path to victory without making the debate stage.”

The campaign may not be releasing actual numbers yet but within 24 hours, some influential like-minded leftist heavy hitters weighed in.

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a first-term New York Democrat with a wide following, tweeted that Castro “is a powerful presence in this race.”

Ocasio-Cortez — who endorsed Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders over the weekend — said that Castro “consistently uses his platform to uplift & center issues that are wrongly marginalized, like homelessness and police violence.”

Adrian Reyna, strategy director for United We Dream, which bills itself as the nation’s largest immigrant youth network, said he had sent his contribution.

“It is imperative that his voice is present in this election. Julián Castro is the only candidate who keeps it real on immigration (also only Latinx in the running) — so square up and donate!”

Comedian Abby Govindan told her 52,000 Twitter followers that Castro “worked hard to get a seat at the table so that people like him wouldn’t have it as hard. He is the American Dream. Even if he’s not your first choice please donate to keep him in the race. We need his voice. He has consistently centered police violence, poor people, people of color and trans people in a way that many frontrunners have failed to do.”

Similarly, the Human Rights Campaign’s Charlotte Clymer wrote that Castro’s “outreach, empathy, and commitment have made him an invaluable part of this process. I’m not endorsing anyone yet, but Castro deserves to stay in this race.”

They may not be supporting him with their own votes but they think Castro is needed in the race because he fights, or something. Most of this has to do with the fact that Castro is the only Latino running and his immigration policy is popular with the open borders crowd. Now we wait and see if Castro makes his own deadline. It’s time to thin the herd of candidates and he may be the next one to go.

Joe Biden’s Latino Outreach Campaign Forgot To Register Their Domain Name…What Could Ever Go Wrong

Yesterday, to some fanfare Joe Biden kicked off his Latino outreach effort.

Even in the announcement, Biden demonstrated that his campaign really isn’t all that savvy about the vernacular of the modern Democrat party:

Today it became obvious that his campaign isn’t savvy about a lot of other things.

But there’s one problem. The Biden campaign failed to purchase www.todosconbiden.com, or even lock down the @TodosConBiden Twitter handle before announcing the new effort — prompting the president’s reelection team to do what it does best: troll.

Now, the Trump campaign is using www.todosconbiden.com to mock the former vice president, with a landing page that says in both English and Spanish, “Oops, Joe forgot about Latinos.” The page also links out to the president’s own Latino outreach coalition “Latinos for Trump.” And the @TodosConBiden Twitter account, in the possession of the Trump campaign, has already begun posting unflattering counter messaging targeting Biden.

And Biden’s team aren’t taking it all that well:

“It is no surprise that Trump’s Campaign would resort to childish antics like this to take attention away from this President’s appalling record of separating families and using immigrants as scapegoats, fomenting hatred and white supremacy, and trying to take away health care from millions of Americans who need it,” according to Isabel Aldunate, deputy director of strategic communications/Hispanic media press secretary for the Biden campaign.

This is the landing page at www.todosconbiden.com:

It sends the user to the Latinos for Trump page.

The @todosconbiden timeline is a thing of beauty

Right now the stuff is aimed at mainstream journalists coming to the site, hopefully they’ll invest a little time and money in trolling Biden in Spanish.

Let me revisit for a moment a post I wrote a couple of weeks ago, Donald Trump, Impeachment, And John Boyd’s OODA Loop.

But that is only part of the story. The real story here is the way the Trump campaign can move from concept to action.

Brad Parscale had just boarded a Jet Blue flight earlier this month when the paper straw he was using ripped in half.

As he tried to keep his iced tea from spilling onto his suit, the annoyed Trump campaign manager tweeted that he was “so over paper straws.” Prodded by his wife not to leave it at that, Parscale emailed his staff from the air with an idea: Let’s sell plastic Trump straws.

In short order, the campaign sent an email to supporters with the subject line, “Making straws great again.” By the time Parscale landed in Florida, the presidential straws were already in production and an advertising campaign was up and running. The first batch sold out within hours.

No meetings. No focus groups. No consultations with enviro-whackos about what Greenpeace will think of this. Just see the opening and act.

Trump may be impeached by the House but he will not be convicted by the Senate. This certainty gives them options that the Democrats do not enjoy.

Unlike the 2016 campaign when Trump had to rely upon a wide variety of grifters to run his campaign–some foisted off on him by the GOPe and some who’d clung to him like lint to Velcro for sometime…he goes into 2020 surrounded by people he trusts and who’ve had their baptism of fire, who’ve spent their time in the pressure cooker. They are loyal and you don’t find the self-serving leaks coming out of Parscale’s operation that bedeviled Trump in 2016. In short, they have the ability to work inside OODA loop of the Democrats, to capitalize on blunders and to do damage control.

If Trump wins in 2020, the real story will be how his campaign was able to act with great decisiveness to good and bad news and turn it into votes and money.

Should Biden win the nomination…and right now I’d say that unless every current Democrat contender decides to ride the same B-737MAX to Kuala Lumpur that chance is near zero…the Trump campaign will maul him. The staffers in the Trump 2020 campaign are smart and quick and they seem to have the authority to make very quick decisions. None of that is apparent in the Biden or Warren campaigns. Both are running consultant-centric, slow-moving, and insular campaigns that are not only risk averse but see themselves as entitled to the presidency.

This is just a foretaste of the Hell that will be Biden’s existence until he hops his final AMTRAK for some prime hair sniffing on the way home to Dover.
