In all likelihood, it’s going to come down to Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren as the two Democrats vying for the 2020 nomination.
Right now, it’s Biden’s race to lose. He has sizable support from the more moderate Democratic voters, a group that is more unified than the far left voters of the Democratic base. His biggest threat, however, is Warren, who appears to be shoring up a good chunk of the far left base.
However, Warren’s biggest threat is not Biden. Her biggest threat is Sanders and the crowd of Senators behind him.
Sanders is probably the best example of “Always the bridesmaid, never the bride” in modern politics. Even Hillary Clinton was able to win the nomination once. Sanders can’t.
But still he runs, and in running he is twice now dividing the party he’s not even a member of in order to fail to win their nomination for president.
Not that I mind all this, to be honest. Each and every one of the Democrats running is out of their minds with Trump Derangement, and their campaigns are reflections of that. But, Sanders in particular is a great case of selfishness and vanity disguised as activism.
He doesn’t stand a chance of winning, yet here he is, keeping Warren from being able to shore up enough of the base to properly challenge Biden’s lead.
And, let’s be clear: Sanders and Warren have the same base. They have the same ideology, the same ideas, and the same unending hatred of all things capitalist. As much as people feared Barack Obama’s promise to “fundamentally change” America, his policies are nothing compared to what Sanders and Warren want to do.
But Sanders looks and sounds old, comes across as crazy and bitter, and scares the hell out of anyone who isn’t as dogmatic as he is.
Warren, on the other hand, looks and sounds younger, is more energetic (in a good way), and has the ability to better connect with more than just the far left.
Even if you keep Kamala Harris, Corey Booker, and the other candidates in the equation, Sanders is far and away the biggest problem with Warren’s run. He can’t overcome her, but he can keep enough of the vote to himself that Warren may never catch up to Biden.
He is forever the political bridesmaid, and it seems like he’s become bitter over that fact, and wants to destroy the happiness of the other candidates.
Again, not that I mind.
