Those Freaking Out About Negotiating With the Taliban Need a Better Argument

Westlake Legal Group media.townhall-2-2-620x317 Those Freaking Out About Negotiating With the Taliban Need a Better Argument War US Troops twitter Taliban soldiers Politics Peace Deal outrage Obama Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story donald trump democrats deaths David French camp david administration 9/11 2001 18 Years

Yesterday, a major story broke via Donald Trump’s Twitter feed involving the war in Afghanistan. He announced that he had cancelled a major negotiating meeting between the US and Taliban at Camp David. This came not he heels of the Taliban bragging about carrying out a terrorist attack in Kabul.

Because everything during the Trump era must produce moaning and gnashing of teeth, this turned into a major scandal, specifically among some on the right.

Here’s National Review’s David French, who naturally had to use this as a way to snark on Twitter and project his supposed moral superiority, because that’s his entire shtick.

Yes, I’m sure that’s it. I’m sure Trump, this entire administration, and the entirety of the Obama administration had no idea who the Taliban were until this week. We’ve been negotiating with them since 2013 completely clueless as to their true intentions or something. Trump was citing a recent attack, not asserting he had no idea they had committed such acts in the past.

Then there was Bill Kristol’s personal grifter and faux 2020 Republican primary candidate, Joe Walsh, making this silly comment.

Trump was hoping to end a nearly two decade long war that’s claimed thousands of lives. Walsh is going to walk around for a photo op while taking shots at people trying to end said war. Does he really think that tweet makes him look like the better person in this equation?

I despise this kind of intellectually dishonest tripe. We’ve been in Afghanistan for 18 years. Let me repeat that. We’ve been in Afghanistan for 18 years. There was a time when the war there made sense. It no longer does and the only way to negotiate a peace is to deal with the Taliban. Those are the realties of the situation on the ground. No amount of virtue signaling and prideful Twitter rants are going to change that.

Kurt is exactly right here. There is zero chance we are going to escalate Afghanistan into a major conflict again, complete with the civilian casualties it’d take to really hamper the Taliban. The United States citizenry has no stomach for it. Nor, do they have a stomach for staying there another decade or walking away in total defeat.

That leaves one option. You negotiate with the Taliban and try to get some concessions that allow us to keep a strategic hold in the area to prevent future terrorism. This was not some crazy idea made up by Donald Trump. These negotiations go back seven years and have held bi-partisan support since at least the last few years of the Obama administration. The right is just as apt to want an end to war in Afghanistan as the left are.

I’ve seen some say this is about meeting at Camp David and it being close to 9/11. If the administration felt they were close to a deal, why would anyone care about such concerns over optics? Shouldn’t ending the war and the bloodshed of American military members be the priority? I don’t get the moral argument there at all. It seems completely backwards to me.

Here’s the biggest issue though. People who want to argue for not negotiating because of optics, pride, or some other worry about decorum continue to make no effort to articulate their strategy for victory, nor what we are actually fighting for. It’s not 2001 anymore. Our surveillance and counter-intelligence technologies are far more advanced. We don’t have to stay on the ground in Afghanistan, having soldiers continue to die into perpetuity, just to be able to stop the possibly of future terrorist training camps being built.

The Taliban are not going anywhere. We have no path to extricate them from the country because the American people, nor its politicians on both sides support major escalation. We either negotiate with them and do what it takes to get a deal, even if that means a meeting at Camp David, or we continue slogging away, letting soldiers die while we are unwilling to put them in a position to win. The former is a much better option, much more moral option at this point.

Rachel Maddow Pushes Hard On New Conspiracy Theory About Why Trump Has Delayed Release Of Aid To Ukraine

Westlake Legal Group media.townhall-300x153 Rachel Maddow Pushes Hard On New Conspiracy Theory About Why Trump Has Delayed Release Of Aid To Ukraine Vice President Joe Biden Ukrainian President Zelensky The Washington Post editors Rudy Giuliani Rachel Maddow President Trump Media Mainstream Media Liberal Elitism Lawrence O'Donnell apology Front Page Stories Featured Story fake news donald trump democrats Campaigns Allow Media Exception Abuse of Power 2020

Hot on the heels of MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell’s false and humiliating report that Russian oligarchs had co-signed President Trump’s loans with Deutsche Bank, Rachel Maddow is beating the drums on a new conspiracy theory. The latest conception comes from a reckless editorial published last week by the Washington Post which claims that Trump is slow walking $250 million in aid to Ukraine until they agree to help him win the 2020 election by damaging Joe Biden’s campaign.

The editorial is entitled, “Trump tries to force Ukraine to meddle in the 2020 election.” The editors write:

Some suspect Mr. Trump is once again catering to Mr. Putin, who is dedicated to undermining Ukrainian democracy and independence. But we’re reliably told that the president has a second and more venal agenda: He is attempting to force Mr. Zelensky to intervene in the 2020 U.S. presidential election by launching an investigation of the leading Democratic candidate, Joe Biden. Mr. Trump is not just soliciting Ukraine’s help with his presidential campaign; he is using U.S. military aid the country desperately needs in an attempt to extort it.

The strong-arming of Mr. Zelensky was openly reported to the New York Times last month by Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, who said he had met in Madrid with a close associate of the Ukrainian leader and urged that the new government restart an investigation of Mr. Biden and his son.

The editors cite as their source Rudy Giuliani, who is one of the President’s most ardent supporters. The use of Giuliani as a source of malicious information about Trump tells us immediately that the New York Times has conveniently taken his words, which we are not told in their editorial, out of context.

At any rate, Maddow has jumped at the opportunity to promote this story. Here’s what she told her viewers in her smarmy, sanctimonious way. The clip is shown in the tweet below.

We have known that President Trump is holding up this aid to Ukraine. We have know that that is dodgy, given how much of a favor that is to Vladimir Putin and Russia. And given that the President is contradicting the Pentagon and insisting on holding back that money. Given that the Trump administration hasn’t told anyone they’re doing this. They just hope that no one will notice. It’s been pretty obvious that something dodgy and worrying is going on here.

But, if the Washington Post is right that Ukraine is not getting its military aid unless they do something to try to hurt Joe Biden’s presidential campaign…???

They’re trying to get Ukraine to help Trump beat Biden, his expected rival for the 2020 campaign. They want Ukraine’s help with that. They want Ukraine to cook something up against Biden or they don’t get their money.

If that’s really what’s going on here, I honestly am going to walk out of this movie.

If only she would.

There is nothing to rebut. Maddow’s remarks, as well as those of the Washington Post, are entirely devoid of facts. It is nothing more than wishful speculation.

Doesn’t she realize that as Vice President, Biden himself once threatened to withhold $1 billion of aid to Ukraine unless the Ukrainian President fired the prosecutor who was about to question his son, Hunter Biden, on his business dealings. Worse still, Biden insisted the order be carried out by the time his plane left the country which was to happen in six hours. The prosecutor was fired as requested.

During a 2018 speech before a group of foreign policy strategists, Biden boasted about this incident.

Did she not learn anything from O’Donnell’s embarrassing “if true” report two weeks ago. I suppose she believes she can always point to the Washington Post as her source. But the Post doesn’t have any evidence either. And twisted words from Rudy Giuliani do not constitute a source.

The top brass at NBC Universal shouldn’t be surprised if they receive another missive from Trump’s attorneys over this.

Rachel Maddow is not a journalist, she’s a propagandist.

This is what desperation looks like.

Screen grab from the 9/6/19 Chick-fil-A Toronto protest via News Talk 1010.

On Friday, I wrote about the opening of the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Toronto, Canada, which was met with long lines of excited customers waiting to get in and unhinged protesters trying to shame them into leaving.

Here’s a brief recap, via Fox News:

The grand opening of Chick-fil-A’s first international location in Toronto was met by a grand protest Friday by LGBTQ activists, who argued that the chicken-centric chain owner’s historically antigay policies will clash with the culture of Canada’s largest city.

Protestors caused a commotion as soon as the restaurant opened its doors at 10:30 a.m., chanting “shame” and “cluck you,” CBC News reports.

“Hey hey, ho ho, Homophobia’s got to go,” activists can be heard shouting in video shared to Twitter by BlogTo.

[…]

Fans of the fried chicken chain, meanwhile, were said to have lined up as early as 6:30 a.m. to await the grand opening, CTV News Toronto reports.

As I noted in my original post, a “die-in” was also staged during the protest, and towards the end of the video clip below you can see unfazed customers stepping over those laying on the ground in order to enter the store:

Rebel News interviewed customers on the day of the protest to get their thoughts, including black customers who contradicted claims by protesters that they were “racist” along with gay customers who talked about the “foolishness” of the protests:

Here’s video of an Asian man in a “Make America Great Again” hat who told Rebel News that he was just there for the food:

Toronto’s NewsTalk 1010 also captured numerous videos from other angles, which show customers unapologetically ignoring marchers and other protesters while entering and exiting the store.

This video shows the doors being opened that morning to customers who had lined up to sample some delicious chicken and waffle fries. Note how the employees inside are standing, applauding, and cheering as those who had waited for hours entered the store:

This video shows the cast of marchers as they walked back and forth in an effort to get the attention of customers waiting in line nearby. Most customers simply ignored them:

The below video shows one customer who did engage with a protester, noting to the angry man that it was silly for them to be protesting chicken sandwiches:

This video shows a couple of customers who exited the store with their purchases. One of them waves a hand in the air triumphantly:

Here’s another video of the die-in from a different angle. Note that the customers are stepping over or around the people laying on the ground while entering the restaurant:

Chick-fil-A is planning to open 15 more locations in the greater Toronto area in the near future, which once again just goes to show that no matter how “woke” protesters think they are, they can’t keep a good fast food chicken sandwich chain down.

There has been a kerfuffle about CNN’s coverage of President Trump during Hurricane Dorian, the hellstorm that destroyed Central Florida and laid waste to Mar-A-Lago. The gist of it is that at one time the National Weather Service issued a forecast saying that Alabama around the time the NWS changed the forecast, Trump mentioned the Alabama forecast. CNN pounced…because their entire business model is built on being reflexively anti-Trump and OrangeManStupid is second only to OrangeManBad in that repertoire of hot takes. Yesterday, SisterToldjah did a run down of events focusing on a White House video showing CNN, itself, making the Alabama forecast Watch: Trump Tweets Video of CNN Saying Alabama Was Under Threat From Dorian After CNN Said They Never Were.

Late yesterday, President Trump was active on Twtter again

More accurately, though, the cat isn’t just CNN, it is actually all of the mainstream media, but CNN is such a big, fat, stupid, predictable, and slow-moving target that it is hard to resist using them as a foil if for no other reason than to hear their little high pitched squeaks of outrage

and to give the @KFile guy someone new to dox

Man Calls Trump a Slur, Here’s How Kamala Harris Responded to Him

Westlake Legal Group Kamala-Harris-TH-620x317 Man Calls Trump a Slur, Here’s How Kamala Harris Responded to Him slur Politics Mentally Retarded media bias lying kamala harris Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Election donald trump democrats CBS campaign 2020

Kamala Harris has stepped in it again.

Fresh off letting you know she wants to control every aspect of your life at CNN’s climate change town hall, Harris hit the campaign trail again. She’s currently languishing in a distant fourth place in the Democrat primary and needs any boost she can get. While in New Hampshire, she took a comment from man ranting about impeachment.

Then things escalated.

“I don’t buy that argument that impeachment does not make sense; the Senate will acquit. I don’t buy that argument. There needs to be accountability. What are you going to do in the next one year to diminish the mentally retarded actions of this guy,” said the man, as some in the audience chuckled.

“Well said,” Harris responded. “Well said.”

“I plan to win this election, I’ll tell you that.”

Harris’ reaction didn’t sit well with with even some liberals, who see using the phrase “mentally retarded” as highly offensive. Worse, Harris then decided the best response to to lie and say she didn’t hear the man.

If you watch this video, this isn’t just improbable, but impossible. She heard it, no question.

Of course, the media are buying her story because that’s what they did. Get a load of this headline.

She also laughed and said “well said,” but I guess that context wasn’t important to CBS. It must be really nice to be a Democrat politician. Not only can you get away with anything, but the media will go out of their way to present you as “above the fray.”

The simple fact is that Harris is just bad at this. I haven’t bought into her campaign from day one. Even after everyone was on her bandwagon after the first debate, I wrote an article here opining she was a sucker’s bet. She’s just a terrible, inauthentic candidate. Way too many people bought into the idea that because she’s black and a woman, that she was going to rocket to the top.

It hasn’t happened and it’s not going to.

Bronx Residents Assault Police Officers For Helping Put Out a Fire

Westlake Legal Group street-car-night-driving-city-urban-569308-pxhere.com_-620x414 Bronx Residents Assault Police Officers For Helping Put Out a Fire rhetoric Politics Police Officers police New York milk Front Page Stories Front Page firefighters fire fight Featured Story democrats dangerous Bronx assault

Here’s another example of why the outrageous, generalized rhetoric against police officers we hear from the left is dangerous.

A fire broke out in a Bronx building last last week, drawing a crowd as firefighters battled the blaze. The police showed up to provide crowd control and multiple assaults took place against the officers.

The local New York media covered in ridiculous fashion, making it seem as if the officers were out for a brawl and were part of the cause. Take this story entitled Fight Breaks Out Between Cops and Residents As Firefighters Battle Bronx Blaze.

You can find the video of the incident at the link above.

Firefighters battling flames inside a Bronx building weren’t the only ones getting hot Tuesday afternoon, as tempers flared between police officers and residents right outside the burning building.

More than 100 firefighters were called to battle the flames shooting out of a sixth floor apartment kitchen near East 171st Street in Grand Concourse. The fire broke out around 4:30 p.m., and neighbors used the fire escape to climb from the smoke-filled units to safety.

Meanwhile, a fiery confrontation was going on outside the building, as tensions rose between heated tenants and police officers called to the scene to help clear the crowds, in order for the firefighters to quickly get in and out of the building.

The fight started as crowds refused to make way as cops demanded they move. Police say a 39-year-old woman ripped an officer’s body camera off and threw it to the ground, while another person threw a carton of milk at the cops before running off.

For the life of me, I don’t get what the point of this is. The officers are there trying to make room for firefighters to save the building these people live in, and they repay that by getting violent. Further, five firefighters were injured trying to serve these people.

Something has to change with how police are treated in this country. The vast majority are underpaid public servants just trying to do a tough job. You will always be able to find bad apples in any profession. That’s not a reason to spread overwrought, false propaganda against cops that leads to this kind of nonsense happening. You probably won’t see Bill de Blasio or anyone from New York City’s government push back on this because they are essentially complicit at this point, never missing a chance to undermine police.

The behavior exhibited by these Bronx residents would have caused a lot of people to throw their hands up and leave them to fight the fire themselves. They are lucky that firefighters and law enforcement abide by a code of duty that requires them to help even those who don’t deserve it.

Pioneer David Hogg Changes His Tune – the Cause of Violence in America is No Longer Guns

We’re living in an age where people who seem to know nothing are being told they know everything.

Such looks to be true of David Hogg.

But he can’t be blamed for being wholly ignorant and completely inexperienced in the world — he’s 19. He’s not supposed to know anything.

When the horrendous Marjory Stonemen Douglas High shooting occurred in 2018, the media selected a group of students who were anti-gun — that would be, the press excluded all students who were not anti-gun — and then pushed them into the camera with evident whispers of, “Just say things as if you know. Because you magically do. It’s a miracle — you just know stuff. Speak as if it’s so.”

The result was a cringefest of gullible teens being used by people who knew better.

Observing young people with absolutely no perspective whatsoever claim themselves the saviors of society as they’d realized what, for some unknown reason, all humans before them had failed to see…watching them on television shout the naive mantra that, because of them, there would never be another mass shooting…was awful. They were being used as pawns toward a political end, unaware of any real-world mechanisms: the intricacies of danger and defense, the wheels of government and how they (don’t) turn, the history of crime vs availability of guns, and the sophistication of factors in the commission and rise of violent crime — morality, psychiatric medication, religion, media, the disintegration of the family, plus all the other things people argue about where murders are concerned.

But, perhaps, most of all, the unprepared adolescents didn’t understand the realities of the 11-minute news cycle. A gaggle of the fresh-faced believed the future was all theirs.

It wasn’t.

It’s no group’s.

The media pick a story and ride it ’til the ratings wane. Then it’s on to the next thing. Buh-bye.

But David Hogg seems intent upon being that person — the one he was told he was, by a media mass that gave him a 4-second spotlight.

He’s still popping up every now and then.

But the wave that swept him from teenage anonymity seems to have only served to keep him bubbled.

Here’s what he had to say Friday night, on MSNBC (courtesy of The Daily Caller). About gun violence and its cause — the one we’re all aware of: white supremacy.

David seems to have moved on to a recent fave of the far Left:

“I think [violence in America] comes down to reckoning with our history, and our history of white supremacy in the United States, and the fact that we live in a post-genocidal society, oftentimes that was orchestrated by the United States government and that, if we want to talk about mass shootings, we have to recognize the massive number of indigenous mass shootings that were committed by the United States government.”

His use of “indigenous” is, of course, wrong. All people born in the U.S. are indigenous to it.

“I think back to the Battle of Wounded Knee and the several hundred Native Americans, predominantly men, women and children that were slaughtered by the United States government back in the 19th century and how that’s never discussed as a mass shooting, right, and that’s wrong, because those people were not armed and we were stealing their land.”

He “thinks back” to Wounded Knee?? Has he been lying about his age?

“I think it comes down to reckoning with the tough history and realizing that, it’s okay if you recognize the actual history of the United States, it’s okay to hate that injustice that much of this country has been founded on and much of the oppression that this country was founded on. That doesn’t mean you hate America because it means you love your fellow Americans so much that you don’t want to repeat the same mistakes we’ve made in the past.”

To be clear, one need only read the writings of William Bradford to understand American Indians were not viewed justly by some of the early settlers.

As for David Hogg, perhaps this will be his new crusade — the fight against white racist America.

If so, maybe he’s learned more than I thought — he’s changing his rhetoric to fit the passing preference of the moment.

But it won’t make America safer. Only a change of dark hearts will do that.

In the meantime, at least he’s got his strange narcissism:

Denial: Kamala Harris Falsely Claims Her Campaign Is in “Top Tier” Even as Polling Shows She’s in a Freefall

Sen. Kamala Harris (CA) is making a campaign swing through New Hampshire this week, and while there Fox News asked her about whether or not she feels she’s still in the top tier even as the media is painting the Democratic presidential nominating race as a three-way race between Joe Biden and Sens. Sanders and Warren:

“Of course I’m part of that top tier and we all know that,” the California Democrat told Fox News and Seacoast Online on Friday evening, during an interview before headlining a party fundraising gala in Portsmouth, N.H.

“This is a campaign that has to be about each person working hard and earning the support. I plan on earning the support of each and every voter,” she also stated.

Watch:

In Harris’s mind she might be a “top tier” candidate but the reality is her campaign has been in a freefall since mid July.

She enjoyed a nice bump in polling numbers, positive press coverage, and fundraising in the aftermath of the first debate at the end of June where she broadsided Joe Biden over the forced busing issue and his praise of working with segregationist Senators back in the 1970s in order to get things done.

Media types and liberal commentators were treating her as the invincible candidate, but as July rolled on, her numbers began to start declining. And after Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) absolutely took Harris to the woodshed over her troubling criminal justice reform record as California’s attorney general, her numbers dropped even more .

Even more troubling for her is the dramatic drop in support from key Democratic voting bloks like black voters and female voters.

Ever since her poor performance at the second debate at the end of July, she has not been able to get her mojo back at all and has struggled to define herself and her campaign.

In fact, things have gotten so bad for Harris that just a little over a month after she mocked Gabbard for her low polling numbers, Harris finds herself only 2 points ahead of the Hawaii Congresswoman in a recent poll, with the margin of error putting her even with Gabbard:

The next Democratic debate is Thursday. Expect her to again attack Biden (but perhaps not from a racial angle this time around), and to take a few swings at Sen. Elizabeth Warren (MA), too, as Warren’s numbers have consistently risen since mid-May, which firmly puts her in the top tier.

Déjà Vu? Why Have 15 House Republicans Announced Their Retirements?

Westlake Legal Group house-of-representatives Déjà Vu? Why Have 15 House Republicans Announced Their Retirements? Rush Limbaugh republicans President Trump House of Representatives House Majority 2020 Front Page Stories Featured Story elections donald trump democrats Congress Campaigns Allow Media Exception 2020

Over the August recess, eight House Republicans announced their retirements bringing the total number of Republican incumbents choosing not to seek reelection to 15. This group includes GOP Reps. Bill Flores (TX),  Susan Brooks (IN), Jim Sensenbrenner (WI), Will Hurd (R-TX), Kenny Marchant (TX), Sean Duffy (WI) and John Shimkus (IL), Rob Bishop (UT), Martha Roby (AL), Paul Mitchell (MI), Pete Olson (TX), Bradley Byrne (AL), Greg Gianforte (MT), Rob Woodall (GA) and Mike Conaway (TX). (Two are seeking higher office.)

To put this into perspective, only four Democratic incumbents have announced they will not run in 2020.

Five of the fifteen retirees are from Texas, which have some calling the trend “Texodus.”

This is shaping up to be frighteningly similar to the situation in 2018 when 34 House Republicans chose not to run for reelection compared to only eight Democrats. The result was that ten of these seats flipped from Republican to Democrat while only three seats flipped from Democrat to Republican.

Republican concern over this alarming trend is not misplaced as it depresses GOP hopes of winning back the House majority. What’s causing so many Republicans to run for the exit?

There are a few who may be looking at a tough fight in 2020, and have chosen to retire instead. That may be the case for Rep. Hurd and several others.

However, most of them occupy safe, conservative seats.

As members of the minority party, there’s no doubt they feel frustrated and irrelevant. And if they believe Democrats will retain power in 2020, they’ve simply chosen to avoid another two years of the same.

Former Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), who lost his bid for reelection in 2018, believes that is the case for some of these lawmakers. He told The Hill, “The most likely outcome is a status-quo election for the House. And that certainly influences people’s decision [to retire], whether they think they can regain the majority or not. For sure, some of those members who retired, [staying in the minority] was a factor in their thinking.”

Julian Zelizer, an expert in congressional history at Princeton University, spoke to The Hill as well. “I don’t think Republicans envision flipping the House in the near future and being in the minority is not fun. Some are also tired of having to defend the party, not just in the era of Trump but in the era of the Tea Party. So the incentives increase to do something else.”

Another former House Republican, Tom Davis (R-VA), said that is one factor, but hardly the only one. He told The Hill that “the GOP base has shifted, creating new power centers that are forcing once-comfortable lawmakers to have to hustle a little bit.”

He added that because lawmakers have not received a pay raise in over ten years, it may be a question of finances. Should I stay here and earn $174,000 or go into the private sector and command a far more lucrative income?

But what Davis sees as the most significant factor are the “changing electoral patterns” brought on by the rise of the populist movement that propelled Trump to the White House…The overall atmosphere in Washington is not very pleasant. This is a global phenomenon caused by the rapidity of change, the instant communications, the rising expectations of those people who are unhappy with the change, who don’t see [government] helping fast enough and who feel their status threatened.”

Other pundits speculate that Republicans are tired of defending Trump. Is Trump himself the reason for the large number of departures?

Curbelo believes Trump was a big part of why he lost. He said, “Trump is a big part of it. Something Trump has done is take away Republicans’ ability to have their own identity, so you’re asked to compete every two years, and your record and your work have little to do with how people are going to vote. That has frustrated a lot of members as well. My work, my record was not really a relevant factor in 2018.”

I don’t buy Curbelo’s argument. There is such a thing as personal responsibility.

Neither does Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX) who recently announced he won’t seek reelection. Flores, 65, said he never intended to have a long career in Congress. He said, “I’m optimistic about opportunities for [the GOP] in 2020. When you boil down all the noise, you come up with a couple of key issues: Are people better off than they were four years ago? Most people would say yes. And do we want to go socialist? Most people would say no.”

Rush Limbaugh discussed possible reasons for the high number of House retirements on his radio show last week.

Pundits have told him the reason is that these lawmakers are being “term limited out of their committee chairmanships, and they don’t want to go back to just being regular members of the House. Once you become a committee chairman, you can’t go back to being a regular bencher.” I would argue that the same is true for Democrats.

He disagrees with those who blame the exodus on Trump as well.

Limbaugh brought up a theory that I disagree with, although I’ve been wrong before. Up front, he told his listeners that he has no evidence for this, “because this is just a supposition,” but thinks it’s possible “based on how I have seen Democrats and their operatives act.” He told his audience:

Nobody, no human being is clean and pure as the wind-driven snow.

We’ve all got something in our closets. We’ve all done something that we don’t want people to know about. I think the Democrats are finding dirt, and they’re going to these Republicans, and they’re saying, “Do you want people to know about this? We are glad to publicize this about you.” “Oh, no, no. No, no! Please don’t.” “Well, okay. Then you gotta retire.” Now, I can’t prove it, but some of this stuff — and some of it may be legitimate. I mean, people retiring after ten years, they may think it’s enough. It’s five terms.

But it’s a lot of power to be giving up. But it just seems to be that these retirements are predominantly Republican, and it’s all happening under the radar. You hear about another retirement here, retirement there. They never add up in your mind. They’re all indiscriminate, little isolated stories — and what’s odd? Nothing’s odd about somebody retiring from Congress. But it seems there’s an exorbitant number of Republicans doing so, and I just have my suspicions about it. That’s all.

He also believes that Democrats have been making inroads at “super-local levels.” He points to Democrats transforming North Carolina and Texas starting at the local level. There’s no denying that these states are no longer solid red.

A caller spoke about the recent scandal involving the Republican Speaker of the Texas State House, Dennis Bonnen, who many consider to be a RINO. Bonnen is said to be a powerful politician in Texas. The story begins with a meeting between Bonnen and one of his top lieutenants, and a conservative activist named Michael Quinn Sullivan in early June. According to the Dallas News:

Sullivan alleges, Bonnen offered writers for his website, Texas Scorecard, media credentials in exchange for refraining from criticizing the legislative session and targeting a group of 10 Republican incumbents. That allegation, which Bonnen denies, has led to political turmoil, a Texas Rangers investigation and a lawsuit.

The caller said, “He [Bonnen] didn’t want ’em back in office because they were attacking him, or they were calling him out as a RINO. Well, there were several other Republicans that knew about it and were going along with this. This has been a huge issue down here. Huge.”

Rush replied that type of thing is going on in other places too, then shifted back to his original argument.

What I really think is going is that a lot of this is being done as opposition research, dirty tricks, what have you, by Democrats, who are hell-bent on taking back Texas or converting Texas to their column. And, you know, the Democrats… Keep one thing in mind. After Obama was elected… People forget this. Barack Obama was a Death Star for the Democrat Party. After his two presidential elections, the Democrat Party lost over 1,000 seats total. Not just in the Congress, of course, but we’re talking statehouse, state senate, governorship, any number of offices. He was just horrible.

Of course, the Drive-Bys didn’t talk about any of this. I remember James Carville. After Trump won in 2016, James Carville was running around complaining that the Democrat Party had never, ever in his lifetime had so little electoral power. Well, my contention is that they’re doing what they can to bring it back at this super local level where they lost it with the election of Obama. Look, the Republicans can play the game, too, and they may well be. I just don’t know. You just don’t hear about a lot of Democrat retirements. But we will keep a sharp eye on this.

Whatever the reason for the high number of Republican retirements, the GOP would be wise to direct their attention to it immediately. Although retirements don’t necessarily mean losing the seats, it’s certainly a sign that Republicans need to work a little harder in the next year if they hope to win back the House majority. It’s an uphill battle and victory will require a large commitment of money and time. But there are fourteen months between now and the election. It will be challenging, but hardly impossible.

Additionally, their task may become far easier once DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz and Prosecutor John Durham release their reports.
