Kamala Harris’s Ex Willie Brown Rains on Her Parade, Says No Democrat Can Beat Trump at This Stage

With her post-debate poll numbers rising and a large fundraising haul, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is the perceived winner from last week’s Democratic debate.

But though the praise for her debate performance against frontrunner Joe Biden continues to roll in, an unexpected source is pouring cold water on the celebration: Harris’s ex beau Willie Brown.

Brown penned a column in the aftermath of the second in a series of two Democratic presidential debates last week, and opined that after what he saw, none of the candidates could beat President Trump at this stage of the game:

The first Democratic debates proved one thing: We still don’t have a candidate who can beat Donald Trump.

California Sen. Kamala Harris got all the attention for playing prosecutor in chief, but her case against former Vice President Joe Biden boiled down in some ways to a ringing call for forced school busing. It won’t be too hard for Trump to knock that one out of the park in 2020.

Biden did himself zero favors by telling Harris that he opposed only busing that was ordered by the federal government. It was a weird endorsement of states’ rights and local jurisdictions’ right to segregate schools. That’s the best argument he could marshal against busing little kids miles across town?

[…]

Trump must have enjoyed every moment and every answer, because he now knows he’s looking at a bunch of potential rivals who are still not ready for prime time.

Brown, who is viewed as a kingmaker in California Democratic circles, has made it a habit of insinuating himself into the public debate at inopportune times for Harris ever since she announced her presidential run.

Just a week after she went public with her presidential ambitions earlier this year, Brown published a piece at the SF Chronicle admitting that the two had once dated “more than 20 years ago.” He also noted that some of his actions benefited her politically at the time:

I’ve been peppered with calls from the national media about my “relationship” with Kamala Harris, particularly since it became obvious that she was going to run for president. Most of them, I have not returned.

Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago. Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker.

[…]

And I certainly helped with [Harris’s] first race for district attorney in San Francisco. I have also helped the careers of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and a host of other politicians.

Not mentioned in the piece was the fact that Brown was (and still is) married at the time of their relationship, though he and his wife have reportedly been separated for decades.

About a week after that, Brown wrote another column, which more or less stated that the one he wrote about their relationship the week prior probably did not help her nationally.

Harris has done what most in her situation would do in ignoring Brown’s rantings and bloviations. But in the long run, her ex may be the least of Harris’s worries if her opponents finally start gunning for her actual record on the issues.

Beto O’Rourke’s Campaign Heads to Mexico to Pander to Asylum Seekers

2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke (D) campaigns in Charlotte, NC – 4/15/19. Screen grab via ABC News.

Last I checked, illegal immigrants couldn’t vote. I realize Democrats sometimes get confused about that, and apparently Robert “Beto” O’Rourke of Texas is no different than his political California cousins who are known to call illegal immigrants their “constituency.”

According to the Associated Press, O’Rourke made a trip across the the southern border to meet with people from countries like El Salvador and Honduras, and talked about how horrible Trump is for his “cruel and inhumane policies” when it comes to protecting the border:

In his first international trip as a White House hopeful, the former congressman traveled to Ciudad Juarez, across the Rio Grande from his native El Paso, Texas, to meet what his campaign described as “individuals and families directly impacted by Donald Trump’s cruel and inhumane policies.”

A fluent Spanish speaker, O’Rourke met around a table at a shelter with immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, some of whom wept as they told of being denied entry into the U.S. while their asylum claims are processed. Many said they were terrified they’d be sent back to their home countries, where their lives had been threatened because of abusive spouses, street gang violence or drug smugglers.

O’Rourke made his trip as public as possible with both a livestream and a large Twitter thread telling individual stories.

O’Rourke ended by reiterating what he said during the Democratic debate, where he called for an end to metering and the Remain in Mexico policy.

The unfortunate thing for O’Rourke is that his pandering to migrants isn’t likely going to help him with votes here in the states. According to an April NPR/Marist poll, Hispanic approval of Trump came in at a shocking 50 percent approval. Other polls have him at various other numbers such as 45 to 30 percent, but one thing that caught the eyes of those watching the polls is that they aren’t budging.

According to the Washington Examiner, Trump’s positions don’t seem to be driving the Hispanic vote away from him as many on both the left and the right thought:

“He starts in a much better place for reelection than when he launched his 2016 campaign,” said Daniel Garza, a Bush administration veteran who runs the Libre Initiative, a Koch network group that encourages Hispanics to embrace conservative policies. “One would think immigration would be a major anchor for him, but he’s turned it into at least a push,” he said, suggesting his policies would neither harm nor help the president.

That’s quite a turnabout for Garza. Here is what he told the Washington Examiner about Trump in August 2015: “His positions are indefensible. I would actually rise up against him.”

O’Rourke’s race to garner the vote from Hispanics may not work out as well as he thinks. He’s pandering to people who either can’t vote or have already decided to vote Democrat whether they’re Hispanic or not. The latter group is more likely, and trying to sway them away from other primary candidates may help boost O’Rourke’s numbers, but it’s not nearly going to be enough.

As far as Democrat voters are concerned, O’Rourke is yesterday’s news. His campaign has been bringing in abysmal numbers thanks to a sudden lack of interest from Democrat voters that were behind him during his run against Texas Senator Ted Cruz. In fact, his popularity has drastically faded so badly that he barely qualified to take the debate stage.

If O’Rourke’s plan to win over the hearts and minds of those willing to get angry over the migrant crisis, he’s got stiff competition in the form of fellow Texas politician Julian Castro. According to Karen Townsend at Hot Air, O’Rourke is calling for an end to certain policies, but Castro is advocating going all the way to open borders, something O’Rourke isn’t quite there on.

Jimmy Carter Says Trump ‘Didn’t Actually Win the Election’

Earlier today, former President Jimmy Carter called President Donald Trump an “illegitimate” president who “didn’t actually win the election in 2016.”

Carter made the comments at a Carter Center conference in Virginia. USA Today’s Susan Page was the first to report about it, posting several tweets detailing remarks made at the conference. Carter’s Vice President, Walter Mondale, also spoke at the conference and accused Trump of showing “symptoms of psychological problems.”

A transcript of Carter’s comments, via Mediate:

“I think the interference, though not yet quantified, should be fully investigated and would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016, he lost the election,” Carter said.

“He was put into office because the Russians interfered,” he said. Carter was then asked if that meant he believed Trump was illegitimate.

“Based on what I said, which I can’t retract,” Carter responded, prompting laughter from the audience.

Video of the conference is also posted at C-SPAN.

Americans have differing opinions about the scope and impact of Russian interference in the 2016 election, largely based on their partisan allegiances, but one thing that we do not have is evidence of Russians (or any other country, entity, or individual) hacking actual ballots or vote totals.

People cast ballots across the country in the 2016 presidential election, and more people in enough states voted for Trump over Hillary Clinton to give him more electoral votes. He “actually” did win the election. Therefore, Donald Trump is a “legitimate” president. This is not complicated.

There are plenty of reasons to be critical of Trump and prefer another candidate for president in 2020. Carter has the same free speech rights as the rest of us to voice such opinions and encourage Americans to vote against Trump next year. But peddling in these kinds of delusional conspiracy theories risks becoming a sad footnote on Carter’s final years of life.

The 94-year-old former peanut farmer had some notorious struggles and policy failures during his one term in the White House, but avoided personal scandals and is widely respected for his Christian faith and volunteer service, perhaps most notably for Habitat for Humanity.

Stick with building houses, Mr. President. Tin foil hats aren’t a good look for you.

Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) look on as Beto O’Rourke speaks Spanish at the Democratic presidential debate – 6/26/19. Screen grab via NBC News.

What do you get when you combine a photo of Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) now-infamous side-eye look with an image of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) visiting our southern border? A much needed laugh at the end of a brutally frustrating week.

As Red State‘s Elizabeth Vaughn wrote Thursday, one of the more humorous moments of the first Democratic debate Wednesday night was Booker giving Beto O’Rourke the side-eye as the former El Paso Congressman tried to answer a question in Spanish.

A brief recap, via The Hill:

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) explained the side-eye look he gave when his fellow White House hopeful, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D), started speaking Spanish during the first night of Democratic presidential debates.

“I just knew he had laid a gauntlet down,” Booker told CNN’s Anderson Cooper with a chuckle. “And I was talking a little bit with [Julián] Castro. Both he and I knew, as people who can speak Spanish, that now we were gonna bring it as well.”

He added that he too “pulled out” a bit of Spanish during the two-hour debate Wednesday evening, realizing that “there’s a lot of bilingual people, some even trilingual, in this race.”

Watch the video clip below, which is hilariously set to zoom in twice on Booker’s face to give you the full effect of how he stared at O’Rourke:

(I laughed for a solid five minutes after watching this the first time!)

Earlier this week, Bonchie wrote about photos taken of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) during a trip she took to the southern border before she was elected to serve in Congress. They showed what looked like an emotional AOC reacting to seeing something horrible just across the fences:

As Jennifer Van Laar noted later, however, the images appeared to have been staged, because a more broad image of the landscape in front of Ocasio-Cortez displayed nothing but border patrol personnel:

After Booker’s look and the images of AOC went viral, video producer and Twitter superstar Caleb Hull came up with this humorous meme of Booker giving her the side eye during her 2018 trip:

For those who haven’t seen it, I thought it was worth sharing. Because we desperately needed to end this week on a humorous note. Andrew Yang Claimed MSNBC Cut His Microphone During the Debates and There’s Evidence He’s Right

Andrew  Yang was the unknown, unlooked for, and frankly well liked addition to the Democratic debate on Thursday night. Those who tuned in to see Yang had to go disappointed despite their fondness for him due to the fact that he wasn’t really the biggest fish in the pond…and the fact that MSNBC cut his microphone.

Yang made the claim on Twitter, setting off a firestorm of anger, and kicking off the #LetYangSpeak hashtag on Twitter.

“…I feel bad for those who tuned in to see and support me that I didn’t get more airtime. Will do better (my mic being off unless called on didn’t help) and glad to have another opportunity in July (and afterwards)!” tweeted Yang.

To show proof that Yang did have his microphone cut, a short video was released showing the moment they cut his microphone while other Democrats were allowed to interject freely.

Yang appears to be polling well, but despite this, he was only given slightly over two minutes of talking time and was given two questions. Meanwhile, Michael Bennet was given five questions despite polling lower than Yang.

While Yang may be liked, he’s not a key player within the Democratic party and thus is being shoved aside. The funny thing is that if he gains popularity and is caught being discriminated against by the mainstream media and the Democratic party at large, it could create something of a Ron Paul situation as some have pointed out. Of course, cutting Yang’s microphone will not help that situation at all, and will only create a Streisand effect that will amplify his voice even louder.

From what he demonstrated during the debate, he seems reasonable and approachable. A moderate in many cases and welcoming to people of various party affiliations.

And that’s exactly why the Democrat party overall will want to reject him as a potential candidate. As the radical parts of the Democrat party rule the roost, anything to the right of Marx is going to be seen as unacceptable.

Bill de Blasio Learns Quoting Che Guevara in Miami is Even Less Popular than Killing Groundhogs

New York City’s groundhog-killing mayor and Democratic Presidential candidate Bill de Blasio was already unlikely to win his party’s nomination, but his trip to Florida this week was an especially epic disaster. Struggling to get attention in an insanely crowded primary, de Blasio made headlines for all the wrong reasons, as he followed an awkward debate performance with the use of a quote infamously associated with Che Guevara, drawing sharp rebukes from Florida politicians on both sides of the aisle.

The incident happened when de Blasio went to a protest of striking workers at the Miami International Airport. De Blasio gave remarks in support of the workers and ended his speech with “Hasta la victoria siempre!” which roughly translates to “Ever on to victory!”

The phrase was strongly associated with Che Guevara, the sociopathic Argentinian revolutionary who personally murdered countless Cuban civilians — including children — in his efforts to help dictator Fidel Castro rise to power, and became a mantra for Guevara and the Castro regime. In 2016, Raul Castro included it in his televised speech to announce that the elder Castro had died.

As the Miami Herald noted, Guevara is “one of the most hated historical figures in Miami,” with many Cuban exiles and their children and grandchildren living in the area.

Republicans and Democrats sharply condemned de Blasio’s Guevara quote as ignorant and offensive.

State Senators Jose Javier Rodriguez and Annette Taddeo, both Miami-area Democrats, slammed de Blasio for quoting a “murderous guerrilla,” calling his comments unacceptable and demanding he apologize, words echoed by the Miami-Dade Democratic Party.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who was born in Miami to Cuban exile parents, denounced de Blasio’s use of the Guevara quote, and posted several tweets pointing out Guevara’s murderous history.

After a few hours of the bipartisan onslaught, De Blasio offered up a bizarre apology — claiming that he did not know it was a Guevara quote and he “did not mean to offend anyone who heard it that way.”

As the Herald noted in their coverage, de Blasio is not unfamiliar with Cuba or the history of the communist revolution there, having honeymooned in Cuba (against U.S. law at the time) and actually getting busted for the exact same faux pas during his mayor’s race in 2013, using the same quote and being called out by the local press for quoting the murderous Guevara.

Rubio was among those skeptical of de Blasio’s excuse, noting the mayor’s long history studying Latin American political issues and direct experiences with the communist Sandinista movement in Nicaragua and with Castro-controlled Cuba.

“But he had NO IDEA he was quoting Che Guevara today,” added Rubio sarcastically. “It was all just an incredible coincidence.”

Few oddsmakers expect de Blasio to win the Democratic presidential nomination, or even be picked as the winner’s vice presidential running mate, but his gaffe presents broader problems for Florida Democrats who must secure a majority of the state’s Hispanic vote in order to win in 2020.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo did what she could to distance her party from de Blasio, noting that he “does not speak for Floridians or the Florida Democratic Party,” but the story had already generated a swarm of headlines and social media posts.

Meanwhile, Florida Republicans have been working to associate Democratic candidates with socialism, such as this banner hung up near the debate location. “Miami: No socialismo, no comunismo, somos capitalista” (“Miami: No socialism, no communism, we are capitalists.”)

Well, it’s time for the second round of the first Democratic debate. After last night’s glitch- and interruption-riddled debacle, one can only hope that tonight’s is even more of a trainwreck. The same rules for viewing will apply as last night: NBC-exclusive, so catch it at 9/8c on NBC, MSNBC, and Telemundo.

Tonight’s cast features the Democratic front-runner, Joe Biden, along with Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris, Michael Bennett, Marianne Williamson, Kirsten Gillibrand, Andrew Yang, John Hickenlooper, and Eric Swalwell.

As last night’s was Elizabeth Warren’s to lose (and I maintain she almost did by not winning it outright), so too is tonight’s Biden’s to lose. Despite a full assault from major media outlets, Biden has stayed on top in polling, but he has to deal with Bernie Sanders, who leads the far-left progressives, and Kamala Harris, who will try to take up the middle ground between the two.

Buttigieg could also make a stand here after taking a beating over his handling of Black Lives Matter protestors, but the rest of the slate is just there as a recognition of their fundraising and name-recognition efforts thus far. It’s very difficult to see any of them making a good impression – though one could have argued the same about John Delaney before last night’s debate.

Here at RedState, we will also be covering the debate on our front page with live commentary. If you check out RedState’s contributor list on Twitter, you’ll get live updates from many of us there as well.

Prepare your drinks now, friends. It’s going to be a long night.

Why the Democratic Debate Bored You to Tears

Westlake Legal Group Beto-620x315 Why the Democratic Debate Bored You to Tears President Politics MSNBC Front Page Stories Featured Story elections donald trump democrats Democrat Debates Allow Media Exception 2020

Wednesday’s Democratic debates brought in a decent amount of viewers but paled in comparison to the viewership during the debates of the 2016 elections.

According to The Hill, NBC brought in some 10 million viewers. A good crowd to be sure, but if the Democrats were looking for a blockbuster night, they didn’t get it:

The 10 million viewership number only pertains to NBC. MSNBC and Telemundo also simulcasted the debate. Those numbers are also expected Thursday afternoon from Nielsen.

For context, the first Republican debate of the 2016 presidential primary season on Fox News, which featured then-real estate mogul Donald Trumpas a front-runner in his first political debate, drew more than 24 million viewers in August 2015.

On the Democratic side in 2015, CNN drew 15.3 million viewers for a debate headlined by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and three other candidates.

There’s a good reason for this, too.

One of the things you try to avoid in comedy is going as blue as you can as quickly as you can. Shock laughs can be funny, but they don’t have a long shelf life, and it leaves you very few places to go afterward.

Looking at the Democratic debate last night made me think of this rule, only the Democrats didn’t start by leading off with the most shocking thing they could say, they came into the debate right after the shocking parts of the Democrat party had had their say. The “eat the rich” and “orange man bad” positions they took is something we’ve been listening to now for a long time. You can only clutch your pearls over hearing leftist politicians talk about their exorbitant tax plans and radical plans to solve climate change so much.

In short, we didn’t hear anything different, just the same bad jokes that lost their edge. We didn’t listen to anything that would have enlightened us as to why we should seriously consider any of these Democrats as a viable candidate. The radical positions the Democrats now feel they should take are positions most Americans have already ruled out.

But aside from the fact that the debates were about as substantial as a ghost party, the real reason people couldn’t bring themselves to care was that the elections are likely already decided. Just last March, the election was being called for Trump by economists who were telling us that the economy is too strong under the current president, and history tells us that a strong economy is almost a guaranteed reelection for the guy running it.

Trump isn’t going anywhere. You know that, I know that, and the Democrats know that, too. They may try, or at least give the impression that they’re trying, but at the end of the day, Trump has the economy and his incumbency working in his favor. Not to mention the fact that people like the guy despite a media throwing Trump’s bad poll numbers around like confetti. He’s filling stadiums with overflow in the thousands. Most Democrats would be lucky to fill a room at the Y.

There are no stakes. The die was cast and it already came up Trump. Save for a miracle for the Democrats, a second term is inevitable.

At this time we’re watching to see which panderer will lose to Donald Trump.

It’s time better spent doing anything else at all.

The Ratings From the Democratic Debate Were About What You’d Expect

Right now, one of the most controversial figures to ever sit in the oval office possibly has his job up for grabs, and the world wants to know what his opponents are going to do about it.

And the answer is to pander you into boredom.

According to The Hill, the Democrat debates that would help decide which person would lose to Donald Trump drew in an audience that I would refer to as “curious” at best. It was a decent audience at 10 million, but compared to the crowds that were brought in during the 2016 elections, that number is shrug-worthy:

I’d like to get more accurate stats to see how many people tuned in and tuned out after a time. Nothing that was said on the stage was particularly new, and the extremist positions being given by almost every candidate up there is one that most of America, even the majority of Democrats, aren’t exactly excited by.

What’s more, there was no winner from last night, but the clear loser was definitely Robert “Beto” O’Rourke, who the Democrats on stage went after due to being the weak, sick gazelle among them. Nobody took any chances by punching up. It was, to but it bluntly, boring.

We may get a different story for tonight as we’re now going to see the heavyweights within the Democrat party see who can speak better Spanish. People love Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden, and they’re going to want to hear from them.

Presidential candidate Julian Castro speaks at the Democratic debate – 6/26/19. Screen grab via MSNBC.

When it comes to so-called “abortion rights”, Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro believes no one should be excluded from the right to choose – including men who identify as women.

At last night’s Democratic debate, Castro was asked about his position on abortion rights and if his healthcare plan would cover abortion costs. Here’s what the former housing secretary had to say:

“I don’t believe only in reproductive freedom, I believe in reproductive justice. And, you know, what that means is just because a woman, or let’s also not forget someone in the trans community, a trans female, is poor doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have the right to exercise that right to choose.”

Watch Castro’s remarks below:

There’s just one slight problem with this answer: Men cannot get pregnant.

Twitter users noticed, and responded:

Greg at Twitchy documented many more reactions here.

Castro was clearly proud of his answer, as he tweeted out video of it later in the evening:

It’s quite possible Castro was referring to transgender MEN, as they are women who identify as men and can still have a baby, depending on where they are in the transition process.

But that’s not what he said so, you know, we have lots of questions on this matter.
