Unraveled: Website for Knitters and Crocheters Bans All Content Supporting Trump

Everything is political these days, and it’s exhausting. Millions of Americans enjoy knitting and crocheting as hobbies, to provide some relaxation, a way to make cherished gifts for loved ones, or even a little extra income. But if you are a supporter of President Donald Trump, one of the biggest yarn crafting websites wants you to know you’re no longer welcome.

Well, technically, you’re still welcome, but you better keep your mouth shut about Trump.

The website in question, Ravelry, has often had a left-leaning tone — they heavily promoted various patterns for the infamous pink “cat” hats seen at many of the Women’s March protests — but the users had a range of political beliefs all across the partisan spectrum (you know, just like America).

The site includes searchable posts for knitting and crochet patterns, some available for free and some for sale, as well as a forum section where users can post about a variety of topics, some yarn-related and some not. Most of the content is utterly benign and unoffensive to any sane person, focused heavily on discussing patterns, sharing techniques and problem solving difficult patterns, or frivolous topics like this photo thread of users’ pet cats playing with yarn.

I’d like to say I hope we can all agree that kittens playing with yarn are still cute, but I’m not so sure anymore. The current divisive toxicity of our politics is spreading rapidly, and Ravelry’s millions of members are now in the middle of the battlefield.

Over the weekend, Ravelry’s Twitter account (with a bio touting that they are an “inclusive, friendly website for [yarn emoji] people around the [globe emoji]”) posted a link to an announcement on their website stating that supporting Trump was no longer allowed on Ravelry.

The linked announcement clarified that this ban included voicing any support for Trump not just in forum posts, but also in user profiles and in patterns. Posting patterns for those pink hats is fine. A knitted MAGA hat or blanket is not.

The head-scratching explanation provided by the site’s administration was to accuse all Trump supporters as being equivalent to white supremacists:

“We cannot provide a space that is inclusive of all and also allow support for open white supremacy. Support of the Trump administration is undeniably support for white supremacy.”

Trump supporters are still allowed to use the site and participate, they just “can’t talk about [supporting Trump] here.” No one’s pattern designs or data would be deleted, but any of the Trump content that offends the site operators so much would be recategorized as private, invisible to all users except the one who posted it.

This means any Trump supporters who had pro-Trump designs for sale on Ravelry will no longer be able to use the site to sell them, and pro-Trump political activists cannot share designs supporting Trump on the site, even for free, for other supporters to access.

The announcement also mentioned that they had adapted their “No Trump” policy from RPG.net, a website forum dedicated to role-playing games.

Political patterns are by no means anywhere close to a majority of the content on Ravelry, but there have been some on both sides. Here are a few patterns from “Deplorable Knitter,” still available from Instagram posts:

As the new policy was enacted, Deplorable Knitter posted screen caps of complaints about her patterns, and strongly objecting to the accusation she or her patterns were racist:

Deplorable Knitter’s G-rated patterns are no longer welcome on Ravelry. Because simply mentioning Trump or his campaign slogans is an act of hate, according to Ravelry.

Still acceptable, however, is this scarf that displays the message “F*** TRUMP” when read at an angle, a seemingly endless array of genitalia crafted out of yarn (NSFW photos at link), and this whimsical design of two deer getting intimate in the woods, ready to adapt for knitted hats or mittens (images sort of NSFW but probably only if your boss is really strict).

I personally have been knitting and crocheting for years (see cat and blanket below), and have often used Ravelry to find new patterns and research techniques. I’m involved in political issues all day long and am far more likely to be searching or posting about blanket patterns than political topics — I’m knitting as a break from politics, not to do more politics! — but must say I find this policy to be completely ridiculous.

Banning posts that are actually racist is fairly noncontroversial as far as internet forum moderation practices go. But it’s a wild and gross exaggeration to say all Trump supporters are white supremacists. I didn’t vote for him and will not vote for him (much to the constant delight of our RedState commenters) but I know many, many people who voted for Trump as a vote against Hillary Clinton, certainly not to endorse any sort of racism or other prejudicial hatred.

Ravelry overstepped with this broad ban on Trump supporters, and it will be a troubling trend if more sites adopt this kind of policy. Dividing America into segregated political groups across all aspects of life will solve no problems and only make matters worse.

Finding common ground is one of the greatest legacies of this grand American experiment, and we have historically been better than any other nation on earth at taking all sorts of people with all sorts of ideas and all sorts of political beliefs and finding a way to peacefully progress as a nation.

How many other countries — even ones we characterize as first world democracies — still experience violence and unrest when elections remove one political party and put another in power? We’ve had bitterly divided and often painful close presidential elections with about half of the country professing to hate the winner for most of my life — Bush, Clinton, another Bush, Obama, Trump — but each time the winner has shown up in Washington, D.C. to take the oath of office, and his predecessor has left the White House peacefully and without bloodshed. We should all be proud of that.

Banning Trump supporters from Ravelry doesn’t end white supremacy and it doesn’t defeat Donald Trump at the ballot box next November. It just deprives people of the chance to bond over cute knitting projects because their political beliefs barred half of them at the door.

The hot takes we’ve gotten from Democrats in the aftermath of Joe Biden’s praise of his ability to get along with segregationist Senators in the 1970s have been all over the map.

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said in an interview Thursday that Biden’s comments on Democratic Sens. James Eastland (MS) and Herman Talmadge (GA) were not that big a deal in the scheme of things. Why? Because Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Jeff Sessions (R-AL) were “pretty stinky, creepy people themselves” and Democratic Senators like Biden critic Cory Booker (NJ) had to work with them, too, she stated.

Sen. Kamala Harris (CA) ripped Biden’s remarks, suggesting he was “coddling the reputations of segregationists.” On the other hand, civil rights icons and Congressmen John Lewis (D-GA) and James Clyburn (D-SC) both defended Biden, saying they had to work with some pretty bad people back in those days, too.

MSNBC‘s “All In” host Chris Hayes had his own special take on it all in the midst of the controversy, and took to the Twitter machine to wonder out loud:

He followed up with a little bit of “WhatAboutBothism”, perhaps in an attempt to make his initial tweet sound more… measured:

Twitter being Twitter, there was actually a debate between liberals in the comments:

In the end, there was no clear winner in the debate. But there was one casualty: Common sense.

Video: Tom Cotton Calmly Exposes the “Radical Open Borders” Position of Democrats in Under 60 Seconds

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) speaks with Chris Wallace – 6/23/19. Screen grab via Fox News.

I’ve got to hand it to House and Senate Republicans – they are not sitting back and taking the left’s punches on the border crisis laying down.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (TX) isn’t holding back. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA) isn’t backing down, and Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) has been unafraid to school funding denier Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on the issue.

They are just a few of many examples.

The latest example comes from Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who appeared on “Fox News Sunday” with Chris Wallace yesterday to discuss the impasse between Democrats and Republicans on illegal immigration and the humanitarian issues that exist at the border.

CNS News reports on Wallace’s question to Cotton, and the Senator’s to-the-point response:

“President Trump has also delayed a roundup that was supposed to begin today of migrant families that have already been given their deportation orders. He said he’s giving Congress two weeks to work out and reform the asylum system, and otherwise, he’ll impose the roundup. I don’t have to tell you. You have a little bit of a look on your face. The likelihood – you talk about healthy skepticism — Congress isn’t going to reform the asylum system in two weeks sir,” host Chris Wallace said.

“So Chris, I was going to say healthy skepticism is warranted for dealing with Democrats when it comes to immigration,” Cotton responded. “Let’s just think about the Democrats position here, Chris. These are people who have claimed asylum in our country. They’ve had their day in court.

“They’ve had their claims rejected, and now they face a valid and final order of removal. If they can’t deport people like that, who can we deport? That’s why the Democrats’ position always comes back to, in essence, open borders,” he said.

Watch video of the segment below:

On Saturday, Cotton made the same point in addressing a tweet from Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who claimed Trump and Republicans were just playing to their base had no plan to deal with the issue:

Not only is Cotton spot-on about the left’s open borders position, he’s also correct in how ICE has specifically been tasked to find and deport the illegal immigrants who have received their final order of removal:

ICE Acting Director Mark Morgan made clear in a call with reporters Wednesday that the ICE raids would target illegal aliens who have ignored court orders to leave the country.

“These individuals that are here, and they’ve received a final order of removal, I hope they’ll do what we tried to get them to do previously: Contact their local ICE office — bring their family together, contact their local ICE office and work with us to send them back to their home country,” Morgan said during the call.

Like Wallace, I’m skeptical Democrats and Republicans are going to be able to come up with a bipartisan solution on this issue in the next two weeks. Time will tell.

According to Slate, Wearing Deodorant Means You’re Oppressed by the Patriarchy

American women have had the right to vote since 1920, laws that prohibited us from owning property or signing contracts without our fathers’ or husbands’ permission have been repealed, and women have outnumbered men in getting college degrees (including graduate and doctoral degrees), so you might think things are going fairly well for us. But here comes Slate to let us know that we are still suffering from systemic patriarchal oppression, specifically from the deodorant and antiperspirant industry.

[It feels obligatory to provide the music video for Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” as a soundtrack to this article. Humor my Generation X music preferences, if you don’t mind.]

Slate contributor Shannon Palus writes a regular column called “Well, Actually,” which is described as “test[ing] health and wellness products to help readers figure out what they should try, what they should skip, and why.” This week’s column focused on “natural” deodorants, which are aluminum-free.

Aluminum is the ingredient in antiperspirants that stops you from actually sweating, and Palus takes a few paragraphs to clear up an urban legend that aluminum causes cancer or Alzheimer’s. Good news! Your baby powder scented Dove isn’t going to kill you.

What your deodorant might be doing, according to Palus, is sacrificing your feminine independence to the patriarchy. She reviews the advertising history of deodorant products, which she described as “a made-up solution to a made-up problem,” noting how the ads portrayed the idea of women perspiring as negative and disgusting.

“Early marketing campaigns,” wrote Palus, “were designed to make women—and they were first marketed just to women—embarrassed about the entire concept of perspiration,” mentioning specific ads that described sweaty women as unappealing to male potential suitors.

“Nowadays,” she continued, “it’s practically expected that women aren’t supposed to sweat through their armpits, which is why I’ve been using antiperspirants since I was in middle school.” Shaking off the advertiser-fueled patriarchal oppression, Palus tried a Clean Queen natural deodorant stick, which retails around $14 to $20.

Westlake Legal Group giphy According to Slate, Wearing Deodorant Means You’re Oppressed by the Patriarchy Slate patriarchy liberal feminism help help i'm being oppressed Front Page Stories Front Page Feminism Featured Story Featured Post deodorant Culture Allow Media Exception

Palus’ review of the product noted that it did seem to manage to control body odor but didn’t stop her from sweating.

Then, after about a dozen paragraphs telling women that we don’t need to submit to Big Deodorant just to satisfy men, she writes that the “best part” about her experiment is that she texted her new boyfriend to ask if he had noticed any difference during the time she had switched from regular antiperspirant to the Clean Queen, and he replied with “[a] firm ‘nope.’”

Never mind that her last paragraph knocks the legs out from under her argument in the rest of her article — she actually was worried about what the man in her life thought about her sweatiness if she describes his positive response as “the best part” — this is not an issue where women need protection.

I’m not wearing antiperspirant because the patriarchy demands it. I’m wearing it for me and everyone around me. I live in Florida. It’s warm enough in a lot of the state to go swimming year round, and the humidity has conquered many weaker-blooded Northern visitors. The “Sunshine State” nickname isn’t just a tourism department slogan. It is hot and sweaty here pretty much year round. I prefer not to stink.

Nearly everyone has had the unpleasant experience of being around someone who eschews modern hygienic habits, whether while traveling overseas, on crowded public transportation, or just being around teenagers who haven’t quite figured it out yet, and it’s not enjoyable.

It’s not the patriarchy bullying us into trying to prevent sweating. It’s just plain good manners to not terrorize the fellow humans in your vicinity with your stench.

In Tweet Rebuking Steve King, AOC Accidentally Reminds People of Her Party’s Tolerance for Anti-Semitism

In the aftermath of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY-14) absurd comparison of border detention centers to Nazi concentration camps last Monday night, the freshman Congresswoman has received a number of invites to visit actual concentration camps in order to educate herself on the vast differences between the two.

One such invite came from a Holocaust remembrance group called “From the Depths”, who posted a letter to her on Friday inviting her to take time during her summer break to visit Auschwitz for a guided educational tour:

A Holocaust commemoration group on Friday invited Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to tour the Nazi death camp Auschwitz with a 93-year-old survivor.

Jonny Daniels, the founder of From the Depths, wrote the open invitation to the progressive freshman asking her to participate in the educational tour during her summer recess from Congress.

From the Depths president Edward Mosberg, a Holocaust survivor, would travel with her for the tour, which includes visits to the Auschwitz-Birkenau, Mauthausen and Majdanek concentration camps.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA-4), who is not high on anyone’s list in Congress these days, posted a link to the story about the invite and encouraged Ocasio-Cortez to take the group up on their offer:

AOC responded, and in the process accidentally reminded people not just of her party’s growing tolerance for anti-Semitism within their ranks, but also her own:

In at least one regard, she’s right. Not only did the House GOP rightly strip King of all his committee assignments, but he was also overwhelmingly rebuked by the House by name.

But her tweet also brings to mind how House Democrats – at AOC’s urging – not only refused to condemn Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) by name over her repeated use of anti-Semitic tropes, but they passed a watered-down “anti-hate” resolution instead of one specific to anti-Semitism and let her keep her assignment on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In other words, she wasn’t punished at all for her reprehensible comments.

Reminding AOC of her party’s blatant duplicity – as well as her own – on calling out specific members for their hate speech needed to be done:

Later, for no other apparent reason other than pure spite, Ocasio-Cortez tagged Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) on the conversation:

No doubt she’s still fuming over Cheney taking her to task last week, but did you catch Ocasio-Cortez’s insinuation that she believes there are more Republican members of the House who (secretly?) have the same affinity for white nationalism King does?

This insinuation, I should remind everyone, is coming from a virtue signaling queen who has made repeated excuses for the anti-Semitic actions and words not just of Omar but also of Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13). Furthermore, her Democratic Socialist party endorses the anti-Semitic BDS movement. So pot, kettle and all that.

In one of her last tweets on the matter (for Sunday, anyway) AOC went the dishonest route by pretending it was King who issued the invite to visit Auschwitz, not the “From the Depths” group:

Daily Wire‘s Ryan Saavedra called her out on it:

Let’s review re: AOC: An apologist for anti-Semitic Democrats? Check. Disgustingly appropriating the Holocaust for political gain? Check. One of the biggest hindrances to alleviating the humanitarian crisis at the border? Check. Insincere about solving the problem? Check. Dishonest to the core? Check.

AOC Again Goes for the Dunk on the Border Crisis, but Crenshaw and McCarthy Call Her Bluff

Most of this week has been an epic dumpster fire of fail with regards to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) digging in on her absurd comparison of border detention centers to Nazi concentration camps. Thankfully, we’re able to end it on a good note with some bluff-calling by Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-23).

On Wednesday, McCarthy blasted AOC for her remarks and called on her not just to apologize to America “but the world”:

At a press conference, the House GOP leader told reporters that the freshman congresswoman owed the U.S. and the world an apology for comparing detention facilities operated by the Trump administration to Nazi-era concentration camps throughout Europe, where millions of Jews were murdered.

“I think Congresswoman AOC needs to apologize,” McCarthy said, referring to Ocasio-Cortez. “Not only to the nation but to the world. She does not understand history.”

“She does not understand what is going on at the border at the same time. But there is no comparison…and to actually say that is really embarrassing,” McCarthy added.

Even as Holocaust experts corrected her for the record throughout the week, the freshman Congresswoman continued to go on a tear, insisting she was right and declaring she would not apologize nor back down over an assertion she was clearly wrong about.

On Friday, AOC tried to turn the tables on McCarthy, and demanded he apologize for the situation at the border:

McCarthy, in turn, was not having it, and called her out on her refusal – and her party’s refusal – to consider the Trump administration’s request for emergency border funding that would help alleviate the crisis she claims to care about (h/t: Twitchy):

Crenshaw, who earlier this week smoothly debunked Ocasio-Cortez’s claims, provided a helpful assist to the GOP House leader:

I’ve seen criticisms from some people that the players in this debate need to get off social media and work together towards a solution. But what the critics don’t understand is that social media is AOC’s weapon of choice, and she has an outsized influence on the national conversation thanks to the massive amounts of followers she has, and thanks to the national media’s round-the-clock fawning coverage of her.

Republicans like Crenshaw, McCarthy, and Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) clearly understand that the best way to embarrass her into doing something – or at the very least expose her ignorance – is to take her on on her own turf.

On Wednesday, McCarthy retweeted out this video that demonstrates just how bad the crisis on the border actually is – and the reason there is a crisis is due to lack of funding which, according to Republicans, will run out this week. Watch as U.S. Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost talks about how agents are bringing in toys and clothes that they bought with their own money for the children at the detention centers:

There is a humanitarian crisis at the border because Democrats like AOC would rather play politics by refusing to provide HHS with the supplemental funding they need. The mainstream media won’t call them out on this, but Republicans like McCarthy, Crenshaw and others will. Good for them.

Video: Ilhan Omar Gives AOC a Run for Her Money With Her Own Special Definition of Concentration Camps

We’re on Day 5 now of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY-14) digging in on her claim that the border detention camps are the modern day equivalent to Nazi concentration camps.

To bring you up to date, on Monday night, she did a Live Instagram video in which she declared that the detention centers at the border were “concentration camps.” She also called President Trump a “fascist.”

Ocasio-Cortez was ripped by Reps. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) and Liz Cheney (R-WY) among many others, and Holocaust experts also weighed in to correct her.

One of the Three Amigas – Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) – eventually weighed in later in the week in defense of her BFF, laughably accusing Cheney and her “crew” of bullying poor victim AOC over her remarks about concentration camps.

The week would just not be complete without the third of the Three Amigas – Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) – giving us her thoughts on the matter. On Thursday, AOC’s other BFF was asked about the controversy surrounding her comments. Here’s what Omar said:

During a Thursday interview on Public Radio International, Omar echoed Ocasio-Cortez’s stance and defended the term and noted the separation of “death camps.”

“When you look at what is taking place, people are being put in camps. And when you think about the definition, if we separate it from death camps, I would say these are camps and people are being concentrated in them. And so that’s the general definition,” Omar said.

“I think a lot of people are conflating what a death camp looks like or a specific removal of people. These people are coming to the border. We are removing them from the border. We are placing them in camps. Some of them are being removed from communities and being put in what we’re calling detention centers — but are essentially camps.”

When asked about the issue again today, Omar doubled down:

“There are camps and people are being concentrated,” Omar said. “This is very simple. I don’t even know why this is a controversial thing to say.”

Omar said the United States needs to have an honest conversation on what is happening at the U.S.-Mexico border and shows why it is “really important for us to abolish [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement].”

Watch:

Well, the debate is over, folks. You can all go home now. Mic drop and all that.

Twice in One Week: Second Journo Mislabels as “Republicans” the Democratic Segregationist Senators Biden Praised

New York Times reporter Astead Herndon speaks on CNN – 6/20/19. Screen grab via CNN.

For the second time in two days on national TV, a political journalist incorrectly labeled as “Republicans” the two segregationist Senators Joe Biden praised earlier this week.

In the first instance, it was MSNBC‘s Kasie Hunt during a Wednesday report she did on the controversy:

Hunt did not make a correction on the air that day, but posted a tweet later that evening noting the error. She also said she’d correct it the next day on-air, which she did:

By that point, however, the damage was done.

The very next day, during a “CNN Newsroom” segment, New York Times political reporter Astead Herndon made the same error (bolded emphasis added):

“Our reporting yesterday was that some of his advisers, and even some of his supporters, were a little shocked with the way he was characterizing his relationships with those senators. And they’ve said, if you want to talk about bipartisanship, why not mention other Republicans — not the kind of the most controversial of them. And we know that the other Democrats are going to try to seize on this to create differences and stand out.”

Watch the segment below:

This is just ridiculous. It does not even take five minutes to Google Sens. James Eastland (MS) & Herman Talmadge (GA) to find out they were both Democrats.

When these things keep happening it’s hard to buy the excuse that it’s just a “mistake.” It’s almost like they want you to be misinformed.

In Hunt’s case, at least, an effort was made to correct the record.

In Herndon’s case, however, CNN did not correct him on-air. And as of this writing, there is not a correction noted on either Herndon’s Twitter feed nor “CNN Newsroom”‘s Twitter feed.

Please tell me again about how the New York Times is committed to “deliver[ing] the highest-quality journalism possible” and how CNN is all about “facts first” because I’m sure as heck not seeing it.

Earlier this week, Red State‘s Alex Parker wrote about how left-wing pop star Madonna has a game plan for convincing the Pope that he and the Catholic Church are wrong about abortion.

Here’s a brief recap of what the pro-choice “Material Girl” singer had to say in a recent interview:

Madonna revealed she would like a meeting with Pope Francis in a wide-ranging interview with Andrew Denton, which aired on Tuesday night.

In a candid episode of Andrew Denton’s Interview, the 60-year-old told the Australian journalist that she’d be interested in sitting down with the head of the Catholic Church at the Vatican to discuss what Jesus thought about women’s rights.

If she had a chance to speak to the pope, Madonna said she’d ask: ‘Let’s talk about Jesus’ point of view about women. Let’s talk about it.’

‘What do you really think he thought of women? And don’t you think Jesus would agree that a woman has the right to choose what to do with her body?’

While what she said during the interview certainly got people’s attention, something else from the interview also got people talking : Her eye patch:

This prompted Texan News writer Holly Hansen to ask a very important question:

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) saw the tweet, and humorously responded:

The reason Madonna is wearing the eye patch is not due to any type of medical issue. She’s wearing it as a fashion statement which, according to Yahoo News, “is part of the Madame X persona she created for [her new] album.”

Crenshaw is a former Navy SEAL who lost his right eye after an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2012.

The freshman Congressman has not been shy about talking about his eye patch and the glass eye he wears since being elected to the House.

He tweeted this picture of a new eye patch he debuted at the State of the Union back in February:

Perhaps the biggest high-profile moment where his eye patch took center stage was in March, when he took it off to show “Captain America” star Chris Evans what was underneath it:

“A VERY cool use of vibranium,” Evans tweeted back to him.

As to the question of who wore their eye patches better – Madonna or Crenshaw – I think there is a very clear winner here, but we’ll leave it up to the readers to decide.

Video: Ben Sasse Gives Impassioned Floor Speech on the Left’s Abortion Extremism, Torches Gillibrand’s Absolutism

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) speaks on the floor of the U.S. Senate – 6/21/19. Screen grab via Sasse’s You Tube channel.

In the aftermath of the Democratic party’s disturbing far leftward lurch on abortion this year, including supporting allowing babies who survive botched abortions to die, Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Thursday to decry their position, and note how out of touch they’d become with the American people.

Noting that several of the Democratic candidates for president would be appearing this weekend at a Planned Parenthood forum in South Carolina, Sasse said that the Democratic party has become more extreme over the years on abortion, going from advocating for “safe, legal, and rare” to free abortions on demand, and comparing pro-lifers to racists and anti-Semitics:

And in fact, it’s actually worse than this – because the position of every senator running for the Democratic nomination, and at least one governor, is that a living, breathing baby who survives an abortion procedure can be left to die after birth. All seven senators running for the Democratic presidential nomination voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act earlier this year, and Governor Bullock, of Montana, vetoed a state-level version of the bill, just before he entered the race. So as things currently stand, it’s entirely possible that the Democratic nominee for the highest office in our land in 2020 will be publicly agnostic about the moral status of post-abortion infanticide. Morally agnostic about post-abortion infanticide.

[…]

As Democrats’ abortion positions have become more extreme, they have not sought to even persuade fellow citizens with whom they disagree. Rather, they have become openly hostile to Americans who disagree on this great moral challenge. My colleague from New York, for instance, Senator Gillibrand — who will be attending this weekend’s forum in South Carolina — made her feelings clear earlier this month in an interview with the Des Moines Register. In promising that she would only appoint judges who would uphold Roe v. Wade, here’s what she said. Listen to this quote:

“I think there are some issues that have such moral clarity that we have as a society decided that the other side is not acceptable. Imagine saying that it’s okay to appoint a judge who’s racist or anti-Semitic or homophobic. . . .

This is not an issue where there is a fair other side. There is no moral equivalency when you come to racism, and I do not believe there is a moral equivalency when it comes to changing laws that deny women reproductive freedom.”

After pointing out how outside of the mainstream Gillibrand’s stance on abortion is, Sasse went on to talk about the racist origins of Planned Parenthood – specifically its founder Margaret Sanger, who was a eugenicist. Sasse noted that the ugly eugenics and racism of the abortion movement did not die out with Sanger, but is in fact still very much a part of it today:

We could also note that it’s in part because of this ugly history that black women in America are three and a half times more likely to have an abortion than white women. And in some parts of Senator Gillibrand’s home state, black children are actually more likely to be aborted than to be carried to term. Or we could point to the continued eugenic use of abortion. For example, to kill children who have non-life-threatening diseases. In the United States today, two-thirds of all babies in the womb who are found to have down syndrome are aborted. Two-thirds of all babies found to have down syndrome in the U.S. are now aborted. And in some parts of Europe the rate is pushing 100% and there are public ad campaigns in two nations in Europe to celebrate the fact that they’ve gotten rid of all of their down syndrome babies.

But instead of going point by point, I’ll just recommend that anyone who wants to better understand this disturbing history should read Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion in Box v. Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky last month, which came down late last month. I guess that, according to my Senate colleague, Justice Thomas is one of those racists – those notorious pro-life racists that are stalking America.

Life News HQ has the full transcript of the speech, which you can read here. You can also watch it below:

Sasse has a 100% rating with the National Right to Life, and 0% ratings with both Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America.
