Publix Witness: Ga. State Rep. Erica Thomas Repeatedly Told Eric Sparkes to “Go Back to Where You Came From”

Ga. State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) and Georgia resident Eric Sparkes (D). Screen grab via WSB-TV.

The case involving Georgia State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) and Georgia resident Eric Sparkes (D) took an interesting twist on Tuesday when it was revealed that at least one of the Publix witnesses told police that they heard Thomas, and not Sparkes, repeatedly yell “go back to where you came from.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

A witness to a heated grocery store encounter between state Rep. Erica Thomas and a man she accused of uttering racist comments told authorities she didn’t hear him make those remarks, according to a Cobb County police report.

A Publix employee told a Cobb County officer that she witnessed part of the conversation and heard Thomas “continuously tell Eric Sparkes to ‘Go back where you came from!’” but did not hear Sparkes utter those words to Thomas.

In a report written by a police officer who reviewed the video, it was noted that Sparkes “did not appear to be irate” when he approached Thomas about the issue he had with her using the express lane, which is contra to Thomas’s claim that he came towards her aggressively with his fists clenched:

He wrote that Sparkes “did not appear to be irate” during the confrontation and that he quickly retreated from Thomas as she moved his way “pointing her finger at him.” When she moved toward Sparkes a second time, a Publix staffer waved for him to leave and Thomas turned to her daughter and paid for her items, he wrote. The dispute lasted about 45 seconds.

Two more witnesses who are Publix employees told police what they saw and heard:

The Publix employee, a customer service manager, told police that after Sparkes accosted Thomas he began to leave but “Ms. Thomas kept ‘running her mouth’ as she approached him.” Sparkes, she said, responded by repeatedly calling Thomas “ignorant.”

The employee told the officer that she did not hear either of them use profanity.

Another Publix staffer, Derrick Tompkins, told police he heard Sparkes call Thomas an expletive. Tompkins told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution he didn’t hear him tell her to “go back” to where she came from. “I’m not going to say that wasn’t said, but I don’t remember hearing it,” he said in an interview. “I’m going to leave it at that.”

Thomas’s attorney Gerald Griggs posted “the full police report” to his Twitter feed and said it backs up the claims Thomas made on her Facebook live. Please make sure to read the report in full:

Here’s Thomas’s Facebook live video:

Here are some key points to consider: On Saturday, the day after her Facebook live video, she backtracked on saying that Sparkes told her to “go back to where you came from.” She denied backtracking on anything in her Monday presser, but the videos tell a different story:

Remember that Thomas’s racism claims about Sparkes are what caused this story to blow up to begin with. If it’s no longer about racism but instead a man confronting a woman at an express lane, it’s still not a good scenario but as I said yesterday it’s a serious climb-down from her insinuation that Sparkes was motivated by the Trump rally where some attendees chanted “send her back” in reference to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).

Here’s what Thomas has said that does check out. She said that Sparkes left the store but then returned and approached her at the express lane. That’s true, according to the police report:

The second video clip I observed showed Mr. Sparkes walk to the first set of exit doors where he stopped and began speaking with Ms. Murrell [a store manager] who was standing at the exit. The video does not have audio, so what was said is unknown. After speaking with Ms. Murrell he then departs the inner doors and leaves the frame of the video. A few seconds later, Mr. Sparkes returns through the door and goes straight to the express lane where Ms. Thomas and her daughter were checking out.

So it’s clear from this report that Sparkes initiated the confrontation, although it’s not clear if he meant to be “confrontational.” Either way, no matter how irate you get over someone using an express lane to get checked out for more items than what the lane’s limit is, you just have to let that go. Pick and choose your battles. This is not a battle you choose. You simply walk away.

Sparkes admitted that he did call Thomas “a lazy, ignorant b****”, which Thomas said in the video. Thomas has said that in response to Sparkes’s alleged comments to her about “going back’ that she in turn told him to “go back” but she did not say she told him to “go back to where you came from.”

Because there is no audio police don’t know exactly what was said first and what the tone of voice was when it was said, and can only rely on witness testimony. But the police report makes it appear as though Thomas quickly gained control of the situation and repeatedly berated Sparkes as he was trying to back away, contra to the insinuation she made in the video that she was so off guard that she didn’t know what to say.

Also, Sparkes’s Facebook page has posts decrying Trump’s “go back to your country” tweets, so why would he say “go back to where you came from” to Thomas? As I speculated a couple of days ago, he probably told her to “go back” to a regular check out lane and that’s where the fuss began, and then she made the comment on her Facebook live about “go back to where you came from” that she backtracked on the next day.

There’s also this interesting tidbit of info. If the experience was as traumatic as she claimed it was, why post a Facebook live before you filed a report with the police?

On Tuesday, the Cobb County PD announced they would not be filing any criminal charges. Sparkes said Monday he is considering filing a defamation lawsuit against Thomas.

Wendy Davis Launched Her Congressional Campaign by Breaking Texas Senate Rules

Former Texas State Senator Wendy Davis announced this week that she would challenge Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) for the Austin-based congressional district he represents. Within the first few moments of the launch of her campaign, she had already taken a very public action that appears to have violated Texas law.

Davis was a quiet, moderate presence during most of her years in the Texas Legislature, but all that changed on the day in June 2013 when she decided to don pink sneakers to filibuster a pro-life bill. Her efforts opposing a ban on late-term abortions and sanitation and safety requirements for abortion clinics allied her with a more extreme liberalism, re-branding her as a darling of the pro-abortion left and their supporters in Hollywood and the media.

One teeny-tiny little detail Davis’ fans often skip over: her infamous filibuster was a complete failure. She was able to hold the Texas Senate hostage long enough for the statutory deadline for the end of session to pass — and the bill therefore to fail — but then-Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) responded nearly immediately with an order for the Legislature to return for a special session.

The special session’s only topic was that pro-life bill, it passed, and Perry signed it into law. Since then, the law has been challenged by several lawsuits, and has had some modifications and restrictions, but it survives and has been credited with contributing to the number of abortion clinics in Texas decreasing.

Davis followed up her failed filibuster by running for Texas Governor. Perry was not running for re-election and then-Attorney General Greg Abbott (R-TX) won the Republican nomination. Abbott easily defeated Davis by nearly 20 points, winning the women’s vote, the Rio Grande Valley (a heavily-Hispanic and Democrat-leaning area), and even Davis’ own state senate district in the Fort Worth area.

And now Davis wants to follow up that failure by running for an Austin congressional district where she does not live. It’s just a convenient target as a metropolitan area with a Republican Congressman who attracts a lot of media attention.

So far, the Wendy Davis for Congress campaign is not off to a great start.

Davis is a Harvard-educated lawyer who was able to hold her filibuster for the requisite number of hours to force the special session because she had studied the finer points of legislative procedure, but made an embarrassing blunder by violating her former office’s basic ethical rules.

When Davis launched her campaign Monday morning, she sent out several online videos calling for donations — a standard tactic for a newly-launched campaign, especially for a candidate with a national media profile like Davis had.

The problem was with at least two of the videos that showed Davis standing on the floor of the Texas Senate chambers, asking for supporters to help her raise $100,000 in her first 48 hours.

Filming political or campaign ads in the Texas Capitol is against the State Preservation Board rules. Media organizations and non-profit organizations may take stock footage and use it if permission is granted ahead of time, but a fundraising video for a political candidate is clearly a violation.

Davis’ violation was called out by her hometown paper, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which contacted Patsy Spaw, the Secretary of the Senate, who confirmed the rule-breaking:

While Davis has spent hours on the Senate floor as a former state senator, Secretary of the Senate Patsy Spaw said State Preservation Board policy prohibits political or campaign filming in the Capitol, which includes the Senate Chamber.

“Likewise, Senate policy prohibits political/campaign filming in the Senate Chamber. Permission to film was not requested and permission was not granted,” Spaw wrote in an email.

Spaw said that while the Senate isn’t able to monitor every tourist who films on the Senate floor, videos taken on the floor can’t be used for political purposes. Groups, such as media organizations, may take stock footage of the chamber if permission is given ahead of time.

A spokesman for Davis’ campaign, Hector Nieto, attempted to deflect the issue, emailing the Star-Telegram, “We disagree. Wendy is a private citizen and not seeking state office.”

Being a “private citizen” does not exempt Davis from the rules here. Filming in the Senate Chamber is prohibited for political and campaign purposes, period. The restrictions are not just for current state legislators, but for all political candidates and organizations, and all other filming is subject to review and prior permission must be requested. The Davis campaign did not do this.

This isn’t some obscure or weird rule unique to Texas, either. Most states — as well as the United States Congress — place restrictions, if not outright prohibitions, on filming political campaign ads in their chambers, or using footage from official legislative hearings and procedures in ads. It’s a fair and nonpartisan rule applied to current and former officeholders of all political affiliations, and the purpose is to keep the legislature’s business from being more overtly political than it already is by nature.

When legislators are acting in their official capacity, they should focus on the business of representing the people in their district, and let them make their campaign ads in their free time. If Davis were actually an Austin resident, perhaps she would be more familiar with the many scenic areas nearby where she could have filmed an ad instead of breaking the rules.

Former Navy SEAL Dom Raso, Jr. fixes the American flag at the Navy SEAL monument – Virginia Beach, VA. 7/18/19. Screen grab via Dom Raso, Jr.

Last Thursday, former Navy SEAL Dom Raso, Jr. noticed the American flag hanging at the Navy SEAL monument in Virginia Beach was not hanging appropriately and needed to be fixed.

So he tried three times to climb the pole and was unsuccessful. On the fourth try, he made it and got the job done.

Here’s the video and comments he posted on his Facebook page of his successful climb. To date, the video has been watched over 3 million times:

[The] flag needed to be fixed at the Navy SEAL monument this morning.

After a 3.5 mile run and smoked from the previous attempts, This was my 4th attempt at trying to get up and fix the flag. Literally had to visualize what I was doing wrong and what I had to do to correct my inefficiencies in order to improve for the next attempt. I couldn’t go by this flag this morning and not give it everything I had. The gold stars on this monument and the sacrifice that has been made for all us was something I wasn’t just going to pass by. This flag pole climb reminded me about EVERYTHING in life. There has been way to grave of sacrifice for me not to try. Once I do try I have to give it my ALL for them. If I fail…honor them by trying one more time and get better every time I do it. As long as this country continues to have great men and women willing to step up to do what is right, we will always prevail.

It doesn’t take many, it just takes a determined and convicted few. I believe with all my heart and soul there is a wave of patriots in this country growing in strength and confidence each day. While we watch parts of our country fall to mainstream confusion, complacency, and ignorance, there is a few that are willing to climb or stand or do what ever it takes. The greatest way to live is by our actions. EVERY SINGLE DAY we are given an opportunity. It’s a choice. We either take it or we don’t. I would have to say my favorite part of the day given that my last video has started to go viral, is the woman I had the pleasure to meet that simply said “God bless you”. ⁣

Ga. State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) and Georgia resident Eric Sparkes (D). Screen grab via WSB-TV.

The Cobb County Police issued a statement earlier today in the case involving allegations made by a Ga. Democratic state legislator of “racism” and “verbal battery” against a Cuban Democrat Publix customer.

The AJC reports:

The Cobb County Police Department said Tuesday that no charges will be filed in a confrontation at a grocery store between a black state legislator and a man she accused of demanding that she “go back” to where she came from.

The department said in a statement that after an investigation state Rep. Erica Thomas and Eric Sparkes were both told to contact the county’s magistrate system if they want to pursue lesser charges.

[…]

[Thomas] also said she had the witnesses to prove it, though one who spoke to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said he didn’t hear Sparkes use that phrase [“go back to where you came from”].

Thomas’s attorneys say in spite of the announcement that this case is not over:

Thomas’ attorney, Gerald Griggs, said Tuesday he hopes the department, which was investigating potential simple battery charges, conducted a “robust investigation” into Sparkes’ background. He said he plans to ask the magistrate court to investigate.

“Rep. Thomas wants the world to know that she’s standing up for the rights of women who have been victimized,” said Griggs, who said he hasn’t seen a Publix videotape of the confrontation yet.

That’s interesting, because during a press conference Griggs held Monday, he insinuated that he had seen the tapes and said they corroborate Thomas’s story.

I should note for the record that it seems Thomas’s attorneys and supporters are shifting gears from this being about racism to instead being about a “woman who was verbally attacked.” While it’s still not a flattering allegation and deserves a full investigation, it’s quite the climb-down from saying Sparkes used racist “Trump language” on her during a dispute about her using an express checkout lane:

Griggs also retweeted this tweet from Carter Media Group founder Dontaye Carter alleging that Sparkes has an extensive criminal background:

While it’s not clear if Carter is representing the PR interests of Griggs and Thomas, he made it clear in several tweet responses to his postings about Sparkes that “this case is about protecting women”, not race. So it sounds like a narrative shift is underway.

Sparkes issued a statement on Monday saying he is considering filing a defamation lawsuit against Thomas. In spite of the narrative shifting, I’m pretty sure he’s not going to forget that she, her attorneys, and her supporters very much made this about race in the beginning, and turned it into a national story.

On Monday, New Yorker Magazine published a piece aimed at rehabilitating the reputation of disgraced former Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who resigned in early 2018 after 8 different women accused him of sexual misconduct or inappropriate touching.

The piece has been widely criticized because of, among other things, what some called the “slut-shaming” nature of how Franken’s first accuser, conservative Leeann Tweeden, was characterized by author Jane Mayer.

Not only that, but Mayer’s seeming newfound respect for due process less than a year after she desperately tried to get an early 1980s Yale classmate of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s to “remember” he allegedly committed a sexual assault against her didn’t go over well with people who remembered the thinly-sourced hit piece.

Nevertheless, Mayer is still persisting on Franken’s supposed innocence, which inspired unhinged left-wing actress Better Midler to weigh in with her own scorching hot takes on both Mayer’s article and Tweeden:

Twitter users let her have it:

Midler of all people should know better than to go the “she asked for it/slut-shaming” route. In December 2017, the same month Franken was battling allegations he had touched women sexually without their consent, Midler stepped forth with her own story about an alleged groping incident in the 1970s involving Geraldo Rivera.

In turn, Rivera said he remembered the incident differently but still apologized to Midler.

I wonder how Midler would have felt if someone posted provocative pictures of her from that time period to insinuate that she either deserved it or her story couldn’t possibly be true?

Cuban Democrat Accused of Racism by Democratic Ga. Rep. Erica Thomas Considers Filing a Defamation Suit

Ga. State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) and Georgia resident Eric Sparkes (D). Screen grab via WSB-TV.

The Georgia man accused of racism and “verbal assault” by Democratic state lawmaker Erica Thomas is fed up with the controversy and is considering filing a defamation lawsuit against her.

CBS 46 reports:

In a statement Monday, Eric Sparkes told CBS46 he’s “in the process of exploring with attorneys a defamation lawsuit against her.”

The argument happened Saturday at a Publix in Mableton. Sparkes claims he simply pointed out to a shopper, whom he says he didn’t recognize as a state lawmaker, that she had too many items in the lane designated for shoppers with 10 items or fewer.

State Rep. Erica Thomas acknowledges she had too many items, but she said she explained to the man that she’s 9-months pregnant and has trouble standing for long periods of time. Both Thomas and Sparkes admit they exchanged words and both left the store.

[…]

After Thomas’s [Monday] news conference, Sparkes sent CBS46 the following statement:

“Ms. Thomas has taken an innocuous situation that began on my part to be about being inconsiderate and turned into a national case about race over night. Ms. Thomas accuses me of telling her to go back to wherever. Those words were never spoken. She backtracked slightly and now is changing her story. I am in the process of exploring with attorneys a defamation lawsuit against her.”

Thomas appeared at the Publix location on Saturday to talk about the alleged incident to reporters, but Sparkes – who says he is a Cuban Democrat – decided to show up, too, and things got heated:

During that interview with WSB-TV, Thomas backtracked on a key claim she initially made about what was said:

With the TV cameras rolling, Thomas repeatedly accused Sparkes of telling her to “go back” — and he denied using that language and said he was a Latino Democrat. In a subsequent interview with Channel 2 Action News, Thomas seemed to hedge her remarks.

“I don’t want to say he said, ‘Go back to your country,’ or ‘Go back to where you came from.’ But he was making those types of references is what I remember,” she told the station.

Watch:

In a Monday presser, Thomas denied backtracking on her statement in any way, but comparison videos of how her story has evolved tell a different story:

Thomas’s attorneys have called on Publix to release any and all videos of the incident. The videos reportedly do not have audio.

Twitter ‘Blue Checks’ Force Macy’s to Pull Plates They Say Promote Eating Disorders

Just four hours after two Twitter “blue checks” complained about these allegedly “fat shaming” plates carried by Macy’s, the massive retailer capitulated and removed the plates.

Alie Ward, who hosts a science podcast and is the host of CBS’ Innovation Nation, was in NYC shopping when she spotted what would soon become the object of her scorn. Her original tweet asked, “How can I get these plates from @Macys banned in all 50 states”? Shortly after, actress Jameela Jamil quote-tweeted Ward, saying, “F these plates,” effectively signing the plates’ death warrant.

Macy’s reply:

“Hi, Alie – we appreciate you sharing this with us and agree that we missed the mark on this product. It will be removed from all STORY at Macy’s locations.”

But did it really miss the mark? Maybe we should be eating a little less. According to the latest map of Adult Obesity Rates compiled by the CDC, there’s not one state in which less than 20 percent of the adult population are obese.

Westlake Legal Group Adult-Obesity-Map-From-CDC-2019-620x373 Twitter ‘Blue Checks’ Force Macy’s to Pull Plates They Say Promote Eating Disorders Pourtions plates Obesity Macy's Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post fat shaming Allow Media Exception Alie Ward

It’s well-known that obesity is the underlying cause of numerous serious diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. It’s also a huge economic drain on both the obese person and society as a whole:

“Obesity is one of the biggest drivers of preventable chronic diseases and healthcare costs in the United States. Currently, estimates for these costs range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion per year. In addition, obesity is associated with job absenteeism, costing approximately $4.3 billion annually and with lower productivity while at work, costing employers $506 per obese worker per year.”

The plates’ manufacturer, Pourtions, told the Huffington Post their products are meant to lightheartedly encourage portion control.

“Pourtions is intended to support healthy eating and drinking. Everyone who has appreciated Pourtions knows that it can be tough sometimes to be as mindful and moderate in our eating and drinking as we’d like, but that a gentle reminder can make a difference,” said [Pourtions’ president Mary] Cassidy.

“That was all we ever meant to encourage. We ourselves use our glasses and plates every day to help us take our own advice. We know this is serious business. We also believe a touch of humor can, for some, be just the right touch,” she said.

None of that matters to the “these plates are causing eating disorders” crowd, who want to love and accept the population into morbid obesity.

One tweeter posted a modified version of the plates that carried the phrases “Enjoy your meal!” and “You are great! Still great! Still great!”

When asked by HuffPo for comment on the plates’ removal, Ward said:

“I wasn’t being literal at all in terms of a legal ‘ban.’” She added that she “just wanted to show the world how insidious beauty culture, and in this case one that shames women, can be. But I wanted Macy’s to know that what they carry and display matters, it can hurt people, and they’re accountable for it.”

What they carry can hurt people? Suppose it hurts someone (who isn’t this writer, promise) that they can’t afford all of the shoes and household goods they’d really, really like to have from Macy’s. They work hard and shouldn’t be taunted by capitalist largesse, right? Macy’s should just sweep that stuff right off of their shelves. Wrong!

Unfortunately, society is now rewarding the mindset that one shouldn’t have to be exposed to a product they don’t like or somehow offends them. Further, they’re rewarding the mindset that products some random, opinionated person on Twitter decides to drag shouldn’t exist, period. While we don’t have to care about everything we see online, there’s a lot to be said for pushing back against this intolerant and destructive mindset.

There must be something in the water in Georgia these days.

There’s been the escalating she said-he said war between a Democratic stage legislator and a Cuban-American Democrat over heated words that were exchanged at a Publix grocery store express lane last Friday.

But there’s also another crazy story coming from Georgia involving a woman who hated a Cobb County man’s Trump 2020 display so much that she drove her SUV through a barbed wire fence to vandalize it at 1 in the morning last Monday.

WSB-TV reports:

[Property owner George] Bentley’s security cameras captured a car driving through the barbed wire fence and then knocking over a bright-colored cube around 1 a.m. Monday.

The video then shows a woman standing in front of the camera to spray-paint the Trump sign.

Bentley and his girlfriend, Dee Corson, discovered what happened when they woke up later in the day.

“That’s pretty strong for it to bother you something like this,” Corson said.

Unfortunately for the vandal, she couldn’t get her car back through the barbed wire fence:

They also made another discovery: a car left behind.

Video shows the woman struggled to get back through the fence, so she left the car there.

“If the car hadn’t been here with the tag on it, and we just had video of the person, it would have been really tough,” Bentley said.

The car led police to Azaria Moore, 20, who is charged with criminal trespass and failure to report a crash.

Moore didn’t talk on camera but told the news outlet that, if convicted, she might have to face up to five years in prison.

Watch the video report below, which includes a short clip of Moore driving through the field and spray-painting the sign:

You know what they say about karma, right?

“They Don’t Want Solutions”: Watch as Dan Crenshaw Again Exposes the Open Borders Position of Democrats

Westlake Legal Group media.townhall-1-2-620x317 “They Don’t Want Solutions”: Watch as Dan Crenshaw Again Exposes the Open Borders Position of Democrats washington D.C. Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) has emerged as a leading voice among House Republicans on the issue of illegal immigration, and in recent weeks has emphasized the point that the Democratic position is that there be nothing short of open borders.

In an interview with Fox News this morning, Crenshaw responded to claims from Democrats about what’s happening at the border and the course of action some on the left are demanding be taken.

But first, some recent history: Earlier this month Crenshaw pointed out how the Democratic position on the current border crisis had evolved over the last few months from accusing Republicans of “manufacturing a crisis” to finally admitting there is a crisis at the border – and then blaming Trump.

In particular, the freshman Congressman took issue with the claims of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who has been among the loudest voices of opposition to the Trump administration’s border policies, and who said she was harassed during her visit to a detention center in early July:

“Now she is saying that border patrol agents harassed her and forced migrants to drink out of toilets? This is insanity. This is not true. There is no one else corroborating these kinds of reports.

“Yet, she is using it to try and make her case that we shouldn’t have any enforcement and that we should have open borders. This is really dishonest behavior from a member of Congress and I honestly can’t believe it.”

In his interview this morning, Crenshaw responded to a question from Fox and Friends‘s Brian Kilmeade about AOC calling for a 9/11-style commission to investigate how conditions on the southern border have deteriorated:

“Notice that they never come up with a solution,” Crenshaw told “Fox & Friends” Monday morning. “They talk about the over-crowded facilities. They never have a solution. They don’t have a solution for our immigration system. They say it shouldn’t be defined by the administration — well, we do have laws right now…that says you can’t illegally cross the border. That’s immigration policy set by Congress. It’s a law in place. We need to enforce it.”

He said Democrats aren’t proposing ways to fix the issue.

“What they really want is more commissions like this, more investigations they can point to, to call the president evil,” he said. “That’s what they want.”

[…]

“I’m worried that the Democrats like this crisis too much,” Crenshaw added. “I’m worried as I’ve seen them fight against every single, even the smallest measures to help fix our immigration problem, they fight against. They don’t want walls. They don’t want a fix to the asylum loopholes. They’re talking about decriminalizing illegal border crossings.”

In other words, what they want is one thing: Open borders.

Watch video of this segment of the interview below:

Crenshaw also recently pushed for an amendment that would allow for crime data collection in sanctuary cities, which Democrats blocked. Watch below as he discussed the bill during a committee hearing:

“I do honestly fear that we have gotten to a point where we are actually debating between open borders and managed borders,” he said in the clip. “I hope we’re not there. I honestly do not hope we’re there.”

Unfortunately, we are most definitely there.

Fail: CNN Caught in Remarkable Self-Own After Saying Trump “Falsely Accused” AOC of Calling America “Garbage”

In October 2017, CNN launched what they called a “Facts First” campaign to counter Trump’s narrative that the cable news outlet was a non-stop source of “fake news.” The move was met with much praise and fanfare, including from Variety, which published this report:

In what may be one of the most distinctive and unorthodox promotional campaigns from the Time Warner cable-news outlet since Ted Turner launched it in 1980, CNN will push back against the portrayal by critics and members of the Trump administration that it dispenses made-up stories to the public in deliberate fashion. A new branding campaign gives the network a new slogan: “Facts First.”

[…]

One of the promos, which start appearing on CNN today, shows a stark picture of an apple on the screen, while music plays. “This is an apple,” says a narrator. “Some people might try to tell you that it’s a banana. They might scream ‘Banana. Banana. Banana.’ over and over and over again. They might put ‘banana’ in all caps. You might even start to believe that this is a banana. But it’s not,” counsels the voice. “This is an apple.”

Remember this?

Since that time, CNN has continuously tried without much success to push back on claims from Republicans including Trump that it leans left, that it more often than not only gives you one side of the story, and/or that it frequently gives you the wrong side of the story.

Their “Facts First” campaign has done little in the way of convincing their critics that the network is on the up and up, especially when you consider how they routinely hold Democrats to different standards than they do Republicans.

But though their duplicity has been well-documented, a pretty remarkable thing happened this past weekend on their website. They fact checked claims President Trump made about Squad leader Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and ended up owning … themselves.

Here’s how their resident fact checker Daniel Dale set it up – the bolded emphasis is added by me:

During an exchange with reporters as he left the White House on Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump made false accusations against both Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Ilhan Omar, two of the four Democratic members of Congress against whom he launched a racist “go back” attack earlier in the week.

“The first lady thinks that it’s horrible what they’ve said about Israel and horrible what they’ve said about our country, these congresswomen. They can’t call our country and our people ‘garbage.’ They can’t be anti-Semitic. They can’t talk about evil Jews, which is what they say. ‘Evil Jews,’ ” Trump said Friday.

In both cases, he was twisting a quote to bolster his allegation that “they hate our country.”

Facts First: Ocasio-Cortez did not call Americans “garbage”; she said in March that the country has gone so far in the wrong direction that people shouldn’t be satisfied with moderate policies that are merely “10% better from garbage.” None of the congresswomen have uttered the phrase “evil Jews”; Omar tweeted in 2012 that Israel had committed “evil doings.”

Here’s where the self-own comes in: Trump didn’t just say that AOC called the American people “garbage” – he also said she called our country “garbage”, which is true once you read the context of the AOC quote, which Dale helpfully provides:

Ocasio-Cortez, a New York congresswoman, did not call any person “garbage,” much less Americans as a group.

Ocasio-Cortez was asked at an event at the South by Southwest festival why it has taken so long for there to be Democratic candidates who run on bold progressive policies like Medicare for All and the Green New Deal.

Ocasio-Cortez said the country has drifted so far in the wrong direction, away from helping average working people, that ambitious initiatives are necessary. Given that society has “strayed so far away from what has really made us powerful and just and good and equitable and productive,” she said, “moderate” policies are insufficient.

“I think all of these things sound radical compared to where we are. But where we are is not a good thing. This idea of 10% better from garbage shouldn’t be what we settle for. It feels like moderate is not a stance, it’s just an attitude toward life of like, ‘meh,’ ” she told her interviewer from The Intercept.

Her remark can be interpreted as her saying that the current state of the country is “garbage.” But it is false to say, as Trump did, that she called “our people” garbage.

Trump was briefly closer to accurate in his rally speech in North Carolina on Wednesday, in which he said, “She described contemporary America” as garbage. But he then added, “That’s you, that’s me, that’s all of us — as garbage.” That’s just not true.

Notice how Dale continuously ignores the part of the quote from Trump he gave in the first part of the fact check, where Trump said AOC had called the country “garbage”? Here’s the full quote again:

“They can’t call our country and our people ‘garbage.’”

It’s almost like Dale didn’t even notice the “country” part of Trump’s quote. I guess he was so eager to white knight for AOC that he conveniently overlooked the part of his quote that was an accurate representation of what Ocasio-Cortez has said about America.

A Washington Post video editor posted a video clip of what AOC said so it could be viewed in context. He thinks it exonerates her, but it doesn’t:

If the media firefighters at CNN, the WaPo, and elsewhere wanted to say that Trump was only half correct in his assessment on what AOC has said about America and its people, that would be one thing. In the AOC quote in question, she didn’t say the American people were garbage, but the context made it clear that she was saying the country is garbage.

The transcript backs that up and so does the video – both of which were, rather ironically, provided by newsies trying to disprove Trump’s insinuation that AOC hates America. News outlets that suggest otherwise are doing the whole apple=banana thing, and in the process are taking part in the same type of “fake news” stories they say they don’t push.
