Over the last week, Twitter’s been purging accounts – almost exclusively of the conservative variety – with alarming frequency. James Woods, an Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez parody account, and David Horowitz are among those banned in the last two days.

Jack’s now adding election interference to his repertoire, banning users from posting a link to Los Angeles City Council candidate Brandon Saario’s website just a month before Election Day.

Saario knew that he was facing an uphill battle in getting the word out about his campaign in Democrat-controlled Los Angeles and knew that Twitter, Facebook, and the like weren’t exactly friendly to conservative candidates or causes. But, as everyone who follows or works in politics knows, any serious candidate must have a presence on all of these platforms.

Former State Assembly candidate Roxanne Beckford Hoge sounded the alarm:

Users who tried to click through to Saario’s website from his Twitter profile received a scary message:

Those using Twitter’s desktop site received the following message when attempting to send any tweet containing a link to Saario’s website. Tweets with the same verbiage, but no website link, were allowed to go through.

Here’s one example of verbiage Twitter classified as “might be automated.”

When reached by RedState, Saario said he hadn’t received anything from Twitter notifying him that there could be a problem with the link to his website or with automated posts, or what he could do to rectify the situation. He said the same thing happened about a month ago and after multiple messages to @TwitterSupport the ability to post a link was restored. This time, it’s been 48 hours with no response from Twitter.

There has been no visible response from the California GOP or the Los Angeles County GOP to this issue on social media.

If it’s not okay for bots to interfere in the electoral process, why is it okay for @Jack to systematically silence conservative voices?

“We Will Only Get Louder”: Pro-Life Rally Planned for Friday in PA, and Matt Walsh Has a Message for Brian Sims

PA State Rep. Brian Sims (D) outside of a Philadelphia Planned Parenthood. Source: Life News HQ.

My Red State colleague Alex Parker has written about recent incidents involving PA state Rep. Brian Sims (D) engaging in despicable behavior against peaceful pro-lifers at a local Planned Parenthood in Philadelphia.

In one incident, Sims bullied an elderly pro-life woman , demanding her home address, and mocking her Christian faith. In another, he made a video offer to Twitter followers of $100 to dox three teenagers who he harassed as they peacefully prayed outside of the Planned Parenthood.

Because of the relentless backlash that has ensued, Sims, who fancies himself as a one-man wrecking crew in defending far left causes, issued a non-apology apology today on social media. His statement doesn’t really quite cover the fact that he, as a government official, was interfering with American citizens and their right to protest.

In response to Sims’s reprehensible behavior, the Daily Wire‘s Matt Walsh, who frequently writes about pro-life issues, had the idea of organizing a rally at that same Planned Parenthood to counter Sims. The idea, he writes, has taken off:

Last night, I suggested on Twitter that we organize a massive rally at that very same Planned Parenthood in Philadelphia. I thought it would be good to show Sims and everyone else that we are not going to sit back submissively while pro-lifers are abused for speaking out in defense of the unborn. Happily, this rally is now becoming a reality. Minutes after I sent that tweet, a number of pro-life groups reached out to help organize. Several prominent conservative voices expressed their desire to be a part of the effort. Hundreds of people said they would like to attend.

So, at 11 AM this Friday, I will be at that clinic on 1144 Locust St in Philadelphia alongside Abby Johnson, Lila Rose, Graham Allen, and many others. If Sims wants to show up with his camera again, any one of us would be more than happy to engage with him. I know he prefers to target elderly women and teenage girls, but now he’ll have the opportunity to pick on someone his own size. The lesson here is simple: If you try to intimidate us into silence, we will only get louder. Bullying tactics will achieve the exact opposite of what you intended. That’s the takeaway.

Walsh even encouraged Sims on Twitter to attend the rally with camera in hand:

This ought to be good.

Do they not like anything that middle America loves in Hollywood?

Our favorite actress on the left coast, Alyssa Milano, who is a shoo-in to play Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the eventual biopic of A.O.C., is tweeting her crazy wacky ideas again. She is aiming her mighty twitter following at fast-food chain Wendy’s because their chicken nuggets support rape or something.

According to the Pluralist this is what the A.O.C. Hollywood version had to say…

Feminist actress Alyssa Milano responded Monday to news that fast-food restaurant Wendy’s would be bringing back its crowd-pleasing spicy chicken nuggets by accusing the company of “refusing to protect farmworker women from sexual assault & rape in the fields.”

Grammy-winning musician Chance the Rapper campaigned for the return of spicy chicken nuggets to Wendy’s menu in a Sunday tweet. Wendy’s pledged to make the dreams of fast-food lovers everywhere come true if a tweet the company made in reply to Chance received more than 2 million likes.

She tweeted this at “Chance The Rapper” and chastised him for wanting rape nuggets.

.@chancetherapper did you know @Wendys is the only fast food chain refusing to protect farmworker women from sexual assault & rape in the fields? Message for the people in charge: Instead of spicy nuggets, we want food that is harvested w/ dignity NOT violence. #BoycottWendys

Alyssa “might” have gotten her info on this from a Think Progress piece from March of 2018 that took Wendys to task for essentially not joining a coalition to protect workers. While workers organizing is fine, stretching this out and say that if you don’t join X workers will be killed, raped or whatever bad thing you can think of is over the top.

Rape and sexual assault are serious issues and must be dealt with in a professional manner. A coalition or union cannot protect you from a predator attacking you or harassing you. That is a legal matter and must be dealt with in conjunction with the legal authorities and we need to make sure and encourage that happens anytime any issue arises.

When you just blindly yell RAPE because you feel something happened and you wanna make cheap political points about delicious chicken nuggets, you do what West Coast A.O.C. did here. Tweet and not think about what you are saying because the P.C. gods must be pacified.

If you want to make a difference then help these workers organize without yelling that Wendy’s supports rape. That is just pure nonsense on Milano’s part and she is not helping anyone who is a victim of sexual harassment or rape with this.

Now, excuse me while I go to Wendy’s and get some of that chili with extra spice.

ThinkProgress Is Mad HBO’s Game of Thrones Isn’t Actually a Climate Change Lecture

[Spoiler alert for Game of Thrones through Season 8, Episode 4 below. Consider yourself warned.]

HBO’s Game of Thrones television series has been a gigantic success for the premium cable network, combining War of the Roses-inspired medieval historical drama with fantasy elements like dragons and zombies to create escapist entertainment that has proven to be popular with both audiences and critics. What it’s not, obviously, is a scientific documentary. That didn’t stop ThinkProgress from complaining that the show featuring dragon-based warfare isn’t including enough content lecturing viewers about climate change.

In an article posted yesterday titled, “Game of Thrones is not about climate change after all as HBO wimps out,” ThinkProgress contributor Joe Romm complained that the showrunners had “literally shattered the entire metaphor” of the show as a warning about the dangers of climate change.

[Last chance to avoid spoilers. No whining if you continue reading past this point.]

Throughout its eight seasons, the show has followed two key narrative arcs, both of which present deadly threats to the characters. The first centers around the clashes between various noble family houses for political control of the realm of Westeros, with military tactics, court intrigues, and soap-opera-style romantic drama all factoring into how the fortunes of different houses rise and fall.

The second arc is about an ice demon called the “Night King” who has the power to reanimate human and animal corpses into an army of the dead, and the efforts of these forces to invade the lands to the south. In this fictional world, seasons are not regular portions of a year, but both summers and winters can last for years on end, and the long winter that was starting in season one ties into this season’s coming onslaught from the Night King and his ice zombie army.

ThinkProgress is unhappy because the show apparently wrapped up the Night King story line before the series finale airs in a few weeks, and mad that “[o]ne of the show’s heroes single-handedly ended the existential climate threat with a clever knife trick,” because “[i]n the real world, climate change is far too challenging a threat to be ended by one person.”

Romm is correct that George R.R. Martin, the author of the book series on which the show is based, told the New York Times that the Night King storyline on Game of Thrones was a “great parallel” to the climate change threat, but in that same article, Martin expressly passed on a question asking him how Game of Thrones “provides insights into the mind-sets and strategies of modern-day geopolitics.”

That’s because Martin is aware that the story he created is just that, a fictional story. And it is one that from the very first episode has followed both storylines of the human political conflicts and the ice zombie invasion threat.

For the sake of argument, let’s not get into the weeds of the climate change debate and pretend for this moment that ThinkProgress’ positions regarding both the seriousness of the threat and their recommended remedies are correct. Why does what a bunch of fictional characters do in a battle with dragons and ice zombies have anything to do with climate change?

The event that upset ThinkProgress was when Arya Stark defeated the Night King by stabbing him with a knife made from dragonglass, a material described as having magical properties. This is after another character, Daenerys Targaryen, fails to kill the Night King after her dragon blasts him with fire.

So, does ThinkProgress approve of the dragon fire failing to kill the Night King? What lesson are we mere mortals, with our pet housecats and corgis, supposed to learn from watching a fire-breathing dragon?

Seriously though, why does ThinkProgress’ climate change argument need to be validated by ice zombies? What difference does it make if the Night King was defeated by a partial coalition of Westerosi forces rather than all of them? Out of all possible environmental threats, the risk of Earth ceasing to follow its annual orbit around the sun is extremely unlikely for millions of years, so why is it so important to get lessons about a place where winter can last for years?

Why do liberal solutions so often require forcing everyone to follow the same program?

Looking at the problem from a different angle, what about the fact that Arya spent most of the series studying and practicing skills that made her capable of issuing the fatal blow in that crucial moment? It was far more than a momentary “clever knife trick,” but rather roughly a decade of the character’s life spent doing difficult and dangerous tasks that were physically, mentally, and emotionally taxing. She sought out a series of experts who offered her different types of training, from “dancing master” Syrio Forel, to Jacquen Haqar and the Faceless Men’s assassin training, to Sandor “the Hound” Clegane’s ruthless tactical skills, to Brienne of Tarth’s swordsmanship.

Perhaps that’s a better metaphor for the more prudent approach to climate change and other environmental challenges: rather than demanding the unified “involvement of all the world’s major powers” to march in lockstep, we should encourage the research and innovation that has historically — on our actual real planet earth, not the fictional world with the dragons — led to continued environmental improvements.

Western capitalism has created cleaner automobiles — including traditional gas-powered engines as well as hybrid and electric vehicles — and more efficient energy production. There’s a company in Texas that developed a way to produce energy from natural gas with zero emissions by using its own pressurized liquid CO2 as a working fluid to turn the factory turbines. When we shop for light bulbs these days, we can chose from incandescent, halogen, florescent, and LED bulbs, all of which are more energy efficient than previous generations of light bulbs. The manatee population in Florida has increased after years of enjoying safe havens in the warm water outflow from several power plants around the state.

There are many, many more examples like this, but none of these innovations came quickly or simply. No “clever knife tricks” to kill off the problem in seconds. They required expert scientists and innovators, entrepreneurial business leaders and venture capitalists, experimentation, time, failure after failure, all eventually leading to progress.

ThinkProgress is unhappy that a fictional television show about dragons failed to guilt trip everyone into giving up their personal automobiles or becoming vegan or whatever the latest cure touted by Green New Deal advocates may be. I’d rather cheer on the real world Arya Starks who are working hard to improve their skills and learn from experimentation to find innovative solutions.

“#TeamPregnantDad”: Major NC Newspaper Publishes Multi-Part Series On How “Men” Who Give Birth Are Blazing Trails

Transgender man Liam Johns and husband Duane Danielson – screen grab via the Charlotte Observer.

The Charlotte Observer (the “CO” as I’ll call it going forward), my hometown newspaper, has done a 5-part series chronicling the pregnancy of Liam Johns, a 30-year-old transgender man from North Carolina.

The paper first reported on Johns in April 2016, about a month after the passage of the state’s controversial HB2 “bathroom bill.” The CO – along with their sister paper the Raleigh News and Observer – was virulently against HB2, which their editorial pages, straight news pieces, so-called fact checks, and even their sports columnists made very clear.

Their 2016 feature on Johns, who was not pregnant at the time, was just one of many transgender stories they peppered the paper with throughout the year in an effort to express their solidarity. Meanwhile, other pieces portrayed HB2 proponents – including sexual assault survivors – as either backwards-thinking women or hate-filled bigots.

From a May 2016 editorial:

From October 2016, the front page of one of their Sunday editions:

The purpose of what I’m about to write is not to poke fun at the couple in the CO’s just-published series. The two agreed to have their private journey to fatherhood documented and published by the paper, and unfortunately the paper exploited and sensationalized their story to promote the myth that men can give birth.

Using the hashtag “#TeamPregnantDad”, the first chapter in the CO’s documentary focused on “the man in the maternity ward”:

Liam, for as far back as he can remember, has longed to have children. But it was only recently, in his late 20s, he imagined himself pregnant.

He’s not the first transgender man to have a baby. While there’s no official data or record-keeping on trans men giving birth, the recognition of “first” is typically given to Thomas Beatie. Beatie appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2008, when he was about six months pregnant. Although headlines announced Beatie as “the world’s first pregnant man,” trans health experts say it’s likely hundreds came before him.

What does the CO not tell you about Beatie? That even though the transgender man had gender reassignment surgery, Beatie had kept the female reproductive organs he was born with, which is how “he” was able to get pregnant (bolded emphasis added):

Five years ago, Thomas Beatie, then 34, gave birth to a girl called Susan.

The American man was born female but subsequently underwent gender reassignment – keeping his female reproductive organs – after having breast surgery to remove glands and flatten his chest.

Since then Thomas has given birth to two other children, Austin and Jenson.

As far as Liam’s road to transitioning and pregnancy goes, the CO makes you read between the lines to figure out that he, too, still had the female organs he was born with in order to get pregnant (bolded emphasis added):

The road to becoming Liam started with small steps in high school, when he shaved his head, wore men’s clothing and confided in a few close friends he was transgender. Later, with the help of hormone injections, Liam grew a beard and soon after, legally changed his name and gender. Then, at 27, he had cosmetic surgery to remove his breasts and reconstruct his chest.

After 10 years of physical transformation, Liam says, he finally felt comfortable in his own body. The confidence — he hoped — would be enough to challenge one of society’s most-ingrained assumptions: that only women give birth to babies.

[…]

[In the summer of 2017] Liam, fresh off a broken engagement, had already been off testosterone injections and was trying to start a family for almost a year.

Hold up: “society’s most-ingrained assumptions: that only women give birth to babies”? I’m sorry, but that’s not a societal “assumption” – that’s a biological, irrefutable fact. Why would any reputable news outlet that seeks to serve their community with reliable information suggest otherwise?

It is an irrefutable fact that every transgender “man” who has ever gotten pregnant has done so with the lady parts “he” decided to keep during their transition.

Men cannot have children.

No matter how many times the CO and other mainstream media outlets write otherwise, that fact will never change.

In addition to their multi-part series, the paper produced a 13 minute video of Johns and husband Duane Danielson’s experiences:

The comments on the articles are disabled, but you can let the paper know your thoughts on their series by sending them an email, or sending a tweet to executive editor Sherry Chisenhall or editorial page editor Taylor Batten.

AOC Tangles With Rick Scott About Sarcasm, Socialism, and Sexism

Just a few weeks ago, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) claimed she was cutting back on social media for mental health reasons, but that didn’t stop her from tangling with Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) on Twitter yesterday.

It all started when Scott tweeted about a proposal from Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), one of the approximately 7,135,804 Democrats currently running for the 2020 presidential nomination, to create a federal gun registry.

Scott slammed the idea as “terrible” and noted “[t]his would be scary if Booker had any chance of becoming President,” a perhaps harsh but likely accurate comment considering the jam-packed clown car that is the Democrats’ primary at the moment.

Next, he tweeted a sarcastic quip, pondering if the Democrats would next endeavor to require Americans to register if they owned any sharp knives, and then, “Maybe @AOC will make us register every time we buy meat as part of her #GreenNewDeal.”

Ocasio-Cortez did not appreciate Scott making fun of her Green New Deal and attacked Scott for lacking “critical thinking” and “honesty,” and claiming that if he were a female candidate, “maybe you’d be called ‘unlikeable,’ ‘crazy,’ or ‘uninformed.’”

Scott fired right back, mocking her for failing to “understand sarcasm,” as well as pointing out that “America rejects socialism and will continue to do so.”

First of all, Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal is so unpopular even among her fellow Democrats that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has publicly voiced her lack of enthusiasm for it, making it very clear she had little interest in expending her political capital to help it advance. When Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) called the Democrats’ bluff and put up the Green New Deal for a vote, the majority of the Senate Democrats voted “present” rather than take a risk of going on the record supporting the bill.

The simple fact is that the Green New Deal is an unworkable set of legislative proposals that would impose restrictions far more extreme than Americans are willing to accept, and the savvier Congressional Democrats who value their own re-elections know that.

Scott knows AOC’s Green New Deal doesn’t actually require people to register when they buy a hamburger, but he was making a larger point about how ridiculous and unwieldy some of the proposals are, and how unpopular socialism actually is.

That’s called sarcasm.

Now, I don’t actually share the belief of some of AOC’s critics that she’s an idiot. Getting elected to Congress at such a young age — especially by first knocking out an incumbent of your own party — is no simple task.

But her constant frenzied habit of taking overly seriously every word from her critics, while insisting that her own foibles be viewed through the most generously forgiving of lenses, is a gimmick that became tiring long ago.

Even worse was AOC’s attempt to paint Scott’s criticism as some sort of sexism.

Scott wasn’t commenting on her hairstyle, physical appearance, clothing style, voice, or anything at all related to her being a woman. He was criticizing a legislative proposal she had promoted.

If you can’t handle people criticizing your bills, then maybe you aren’t tough enough to be in Congress. Is it sexist if I question whether she’s tough enough? Again, I actually think she is, and this is just political theater from her, but it has gotten ridiculous seeing her cry sexism every time she’s criticized.

It’s specifically ridiculous regarding Scott to try to claim there’s some sort of inherent sexism in calling a politician “unlikeable.”

Scott famously refused to meet with any of the editorial boards of the newspapers around Florida when he first ran for governor in 2010. They were annoyed by his snub, and all endorsed his opponent. A similar pattern repeated itself for his 2014 reelection campaign and his 2018 campaign for Senate.

Scott’s been repeatedly compared to Voldemort, the villainous wizard from the Harry Potter books and movies, and editorial cartoonists have been savaging him for nearly a decade now.

Not. Everything. Is. Sexism.

Once again, I don’t think she’s actually an idiot. She just seems to like playing one on Twitter.

Joy Behar and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) debate on ‘The View’ – 5/6/19. Screen grab via ABC.

On Monday, Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) went into the lion’s den better known as ABC‘s “The View” program to discuss a variety of topics, including illegal immigration, his criticisms of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5), and rhetoric that President Trump uses that the co-hosts find offensive.

One of the highlights of the segment for me was Crenshaw’s calm but clear debunking of the false claim that Trump said white supremacists at the Charlottesville riots were “fine people.”

Newsbusters reports:

Finally, the View producers graciously let Meghan McCain get one conservative question in, asking why Democrats were reluctant to call out Rep. Ilhan Omar.

He boiled it down to partisan politics, which he noted also happens with his own party. Before he or McCain could elaborate, Joy Behar jumped in to defend Omar and bring the criticism back to Trump:

JOY BEHAR: I would be remiss if I didn’t bring up the fact that she’s a new congresswoman. On the right what we have is the President of the United States in Charlottesville saying that there are good people on both sides and people were yelling Jews will not replace us. They’re not good people on both sides–

CRENSHAW: Well in that same sentence when he said that he also said I’m definitely not referring to white nationalists.

BEHAR: Why do you apologize for him? He’s ridiculous! [rolls eyes]

CRENSHAW: You have to read to exactly what he said.

SUNNY HOSTIN: It was not in the same sentence. It was actually in a statement two days later.

CRENSHAW: No, it wasn’t. No it wasn’t.

Watch their back and forth in the video clip below:

The media-driven lies about Trump’s Charlottesville remarks have been debunked many times, yet the myth still persists. Thankfully, Crenshaw didn’t give in on the point as Behar and some of the other co-hosts continued to try and keep peddling the false claim.

Sen. Ted Cruz has been on a bit of a roll since his re-election win over Robert O’Rourke last year and the debut of his lumberjack beard. He has expanded his Jedi training to include not just ticking off people in Washington D.C. but also getting actors who are no longer in the limelight peeved.

This has been truly glorious to watch.

The latest example comes from Fox News via twitter, where former Seinfeld “comic” Jason Alexander, took umbrage with Sen. Cruz comment about one of  Cruz’s Senate colleagues POTUS campaign being a lil vapid.

From Fox News

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, last week invoked a Seinfeld line in a dig at 2020 presidential candidate Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., but days later, Jason Alexander, the actor who played George Costanza on the show, took issue with Cruz.

On Thursday, Cruz tweeted that Bennet’s campaign is a “Seinfeld campaign—about nothing,” in a reference to the show’s running joke that it essentially had no plot. The show ran from 1989 to 1998 and is seen as one of the most beloved series ever.

Cruz tweeted this on Thursday, May 2nd…

Michael Bennet’s campaign is a Seinfeld campaign—about nothing—that typifies the Left’s empty rage in 2020. In a decade in the Senate, he’s done very little…but he did stomp his foot & yell at me on Senate floor (which he features in fundraising emails).

Three days later Alexander came up with this gem

So @SenTedCruz has called @SenatorBennet a “Seinfeld campaign”, claiming it’s about nothing. I’ve met Bennett. He is a great man and real choice for POTUS. As for Cruz – the jerk store called and they’re running out of you. I say, the faster the better.

Good one Costanza. You are really showing your wit responding with a line someone else wrote for you in a show about nada. Thankfully for America, Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David did the writing on the show and you gurgled your way through their writing.

The only thing Ted Cruz was pointing out was that Michael Bennet’s Presidential run looks a bit bleak. Which it is. Just because Constanza has met him and thinks the Senator from Colorado is a nice guy, doesn’t mean his campaign is NOT about nothing and pretty boring. Just brushing up on Bennets time in the Senate would confirm this.

Constanza is probably too busy to look at policy material or other icky stuff like that being he is trying to become a world-class poker player. Just google some of those stellar results.

So congrats to Ted Cruz for his win last year against Robert, for keeping D.C. on its toes and getting people who were once in a show about nothing crying about something small. You are on a roll Senator.

Keep. It. Up.

Six months ago, at 11:20 p.m. on November 7, 2018, a troubled young man armed with a .45 semiautomatic pistol entered the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, unloaded more than 60 rounds of ammunition, slaughtered 12 innocent souls, and changed eastern Ventura County forever.

Because of my work in media, and because I somewhat specialize in Second Amendment issues, I’m quite familiar with how social media reacts when there is a shooting anywhere. I was quite unfamiliar with how it felt to see these posts in my feed when the shooting took place in my community and at a place my friends and I frequented. As I referenced in a breaking news post that night (which I was able to write because I was still in shock), I went dancing at Borderline a few times a year, but a group of my friends went nearly every Thursday night.

Seeing these detached political posts from people thousands of miles away filled me with rage. I had Twitter open on one tab and Facebook on another. Looking back, I think I tried to keep my “writer” hat on for a while as a way to protect myself from pain. But then on Facebook I saw posts like this one from my colleague David Spady:

David wrote:

“Prayers needed for the kids and families at Borderline in Thousand Oaks. My son Tyler was shot at but not hit and is okay, several people were hit. Tyler ran to a house down the street and a family let him in – he is still there.”

Or a post from a church friend:

Kym wrote:

“Never want to get that call at 11:30 PM… What a long night it’s been. My daughter…and her friend…dance every Wednesday evening at the Borderline.

}They were one of the first out and are shaken up but safe. So thankful for those tender little mercies and blessings that come to us every day.

“You never think this will happen in your town.”

Or a post from a high school friend, Chanda, which essentially said (it’s since been deleted):

“Please pray for our Calvary Church family. One of our youth pastors, Noel, headed out to Borderline to dance after Wednesday night church. We can’t get in touch with her. We’re sure she will be okay, but we’re worried sick.”

Later that day we learned that Noel [Sparks] had been murdered by the gunman, and that Chanda was faced with the task of explaining to her young daughters why Miss Noel would never again sing “This Little Light of Mine” or “Jesus Loves Me “with them at church.

Politics had never been further from my mind. The thought of anything political turned my stomach.

Indeed, these are the times that try men’s souls. And when they do, we retreat to the people and places we know the best. In that spirit, I invited a lifelong friend, Bernadine, decided to go to with me to the vigil. We’d heard about a brush fire on the other side of town (which eventually became the devastating Woolsey Fire) but since we’d been through fires our entire lives and had never been evacuated, we figured we were safe.

Bernadine and I are both work-from-home single moms and didn’t have time to go buy flowers, so I cut roses from my garden and Bernadine brought battery-operated candles (no one wants ACTUAL flames during Santa Ana winds) and off we went. It took an entire hour to drive the five miles to the civic center.

We could only get into the overflow. Sitting on the floor, watching a live stream, we heard our outgoing Sheriff Geoff Dean (this occurred during his LAST shift) honor his friend, slain Deputy Ron Helus, and ask that “we reach out, we hold the hands of everyone in our community, and come together to move forward and overcome evil with good.”

As he finished, the people next to us asked if two girls who’d just arrived at the vigil could squish between us. The girls had been at Borderline during the shooting, they said, and had lost friends in the carnage. We quickly said yes, and the girls – still wearing hospital wristbands – sat next to us.

After Sheriff Dean’s speech the soloist started singing “Amazing Grace,” and the entire audience stood, turned on their battery-operated candles, and sang along. The girls next to us looked at each other with a panicked look on their faces, realizing they didn’t have candles. Before they could say a word, Bernadine and I gave our candles to them. They were overcome with emotion as we all sang – and wept – together.

Bernadine and I couldn’t hold back our tears either, our maternal instincts kicking in. We wanted to take away the pain somehow. My mind was racing, wondering what I could say or do that could possibly bring some kind of love or compassion to these young girls, who still have so much of life before them.

In what I can only describe as a gift of the spirit, I was given the words to say to the girl as the song ended. I approached one girl, held out the roses, and said, choking back tears, “Here. These are for you. After everything ugly you’ve seen today, I wanted you to have something beautiful to remember about this day.”

The four of us, who had never met before, embraced each other and wept. We told the girls we loved them and that we would all get through this together. I wept for their pain, for their lost innocence, and for the loss of their friends.

I don’t know the girls’ names, and I don’t know where they are today or how they are doing. Wherever they are, I hope they know that our #ThousandOaksStrong community is still here to love them through the pain. I wish there was a happy, simple ending to this remembrance, but there’s not – only the knowledge that eventually love overcomes pain.

Ted Lieu’s Creative Uses for Donor Dollars, Part I

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA and failed Candace Owens troll) has a hobby of attempting to “gotcha” President Trump and other conservatives on Twitter. Sadly for him, he suffers from the common Democrat ailment of “Lack of Self Awareness.”

For Cinco de Mayo, Lieu attempted to burrrrn Trump by retweeting a receipt from Mar-a-Lago obtained by ProPublica, showing that the “member” US Department of State spent $1,000 on alcohol.

Lieu’s post was a mock query to the Office of Congressional Ethics, asking if it would be okay if he billed a bunch of alcohol to the “taxpayers” for a reception the next weekend, then saying:

“Aw, just kidding. I’m not part of the corrupt Administration.”

Perhaps thinking that his endless needling of Trump would keep people from looking at his own FEC reports, Lieu boldly posted this tweet just two hours and 40 minutes later:

This was just a wonderful out-of-the-blue honor for two prominent members of the community whose teenage sons attend Torrance, CA schools, right? Well, Mrs. Lieu sat on the board of the Torrance Education Foundation for years, so perhaps that has something to do with it.

And, perhaps the Lieus’ generous personal contribution to the auction (an all-expenses-paid trip for two to Washington, DC for the First Lady’s Luncheon and a performance at the Kennedy Center) contributed to the Torrance Education Foundation’s decision to name them as Honorary Co-Chairs.

But was it really a personal contribution?

It looks like the tickets for the First Lady’s Luncheon were purchased by Ted Lieu for Congress, not School Board Member Betty Lieu and Congressman Ted Lieu. The description on this particular FEC report is listed as “Food and Beverages,” but every other year Lieu’s been in Congress he’s purchased tickets to the First Lady’s Luncheon in the same time frame.

For example, on both February 21, 2017 and March 5, 2018, Lieu’s campaign paid The Congressional Club $600.00 for tickets to the First Lady’s Luncheon.

And, on both February 24, 2015 and March 11, 2016 Lieu’s campaign purchased tickets to the First Lady’s Luncheon from The Congressional Club ($600 in 2015, $500 in 2016).

What a wonderful use of donor money.

There’s another possible explanation for why the Lieus are so popular in the Torrance educational community. Rep. Lieu’s donors have unwittingly donated over $10,000 to the Torrance Education Foundation.

On March 4, 2019 Ted Lieu for Congress made a $5,000 civic donation to the Torrance Education Foundation.

During the 2017-2018 election cycle, Ted Lieu for Congress made donations totaling $7,160 to the Torrance Education Foundation.

Clearly, making charitable contributions to public schools isn’t a nefarious enterprise. However, Lieu has three more personal reasons for his contributions.

If you’ve followed Lieu’s Twitter account at all, you know that he’s quite proud (justifiably) of his sons’ accomplishments in robotics and their award-winning robotics team, TorBots.

TorBots is sponsored by the Torrance Education Foundation.

Again, there is nothing wrong with Lieu contributing to the Torrance Education Foundation. But should he be using his campaign’s funds to make those contributions?

It’s also interesting that Lieu’s campaign is making contributions to a foundation on whose board of directors his wife sits (or did at the time).

Betty Lieu was a Director at Large in 2017 and 2018.

Betty Lieu is no longer on the Torrance Education Foundation’s Board of Directors, because in November 2018 she was elected to the Torrance Unified School District Board of Trustees.

It appears that Rep. Lieu’s donor money went to that race, too. Just after his wife’s victory, on November 26, 2018, Lieu’s campaign contributed $888 to his wife’s campaign.Westlake Legal Group Betty-Lieu-2018a-School-Board-620x802 Ted Lieu’s Creative Uses for Donor Dollars, Part I Torrance Unified School District Torrance Education Foundation Torbots ted lieu Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post donald trump corruption Campaign Finance Betty Lieu Allow Media Exception

In January 2019 Lieu’s campaign made two separate contributions, totaling $7,000, to Betty Lieu’s School Board campaign.

From these records, it seems that Lieu’s tweets about “corruption” are ironic, indeed.
