Alabama state Rep. John Rogers (D). Screen grab via WVTM-TV.

Last Thursday, I wrote about the deeply disturbing comments longtime Alabama Democratic state Rep. John Rogers made on the statehouse floor defending his vote against a pro-life bill. To recap, here’s what he said:

“Some kids are unwanted, so you kill them now or you kill them later. You bring them in the world unwanted, unloved, you send them to the electric chair. So, you kill them now or you kill them later,” Rogers said.

Rogers also said abortion should be an option for women in cases where their unborn children are “retarded” or “half-deformed.”

As my Red State colleague Brandon Morse noted that night, Rogers went even further later, stating that Donald Trump, Jr. – who had earlier criticized his abortion position – was proof that women should always have the right to abortion “because [Trump, Jr.] is evidently retarded or crazy”:

When asked by WVTM to react to the president’s son, Rogers laughed, saying Trump Jr. was “proof” that women should have a right to an abortion and called his statement “stupid.”

He even suggested that Trump Jr. was “retarded or crazy.”

“I know there’s something wrong with that boy,” Rogers said. “I look at him and I can tell there’s something wrong with him. That’s the best defense I have for more abortions right there looking at him.”

Watch video of Rogers’s repulsive comments below:

Democratic Sen. Doug Jones said last week in response that Rogers should apologize for his comments on abortion and Trump, Jr. But in a radio interview today, Rogers said he and Jones had talked over the phone and that Jones told him he privately agreed with him but had to take the stance he did against him publicly because of politics:

“Well, he called me twice. He told me, ‘John, I know you’re right but I got to come out against you,’” Rogers confided. He then told the U.S. senator that was acceptable. “I said, ‘Okay,’ I said, ‘If it’s going to help your campaign, do that.’ That’s the kind of guy I am.”

Later, however, Rogers suggested Jones spoke with him again and things got more heated. After Jones yelled at him, Rogers was no longer willing to play along.

“Doug Jones felt like the things that you were saying on the floor were hurting him politically?” Murphy, the talk show host, asked.

“He issued an apology for me,” the state senator said. He went on to complain, “You don’t chastise me … it’s bigger than reelection, what I’m talking about.”

Rogers later said that the heated back and forth between him and Jones have him considering a possible challenge to Jones for his U.S. Senate seat:

“I was ready to give [to his campaign],” the legislator said. “I don’t want to run [against Jones]. I’ve got to raise a million dollars. If I raise a million, I’ll run; I can run a million-dollar campaign. If I’m go run, I’ll run to win.

“The way he treated me on the phone. Don’t call hollering and shouting at me.”

Rogers said he’ll “know in the two or three weeks whether I’ll run.”

As Alexandra DeSanctis points out, challenge or not, Jones’s record is in line with pro-abortion Democrats:

Regardless of whether Rogers is telling the truth, and regardless of the senator’s public condemnation of his remarks, Jones has already shown he entirely agrees with the Democratic representative on abortion policy. When he was running for the Senate in 2017, Jones told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd that he doesn’t support any restrictions at all on a woman’s right to an abortion. And Jones proved it last January, when he voted against a 20-week abortion ban that 60 percent of Americans (including half of Democrats) support.

Jones may think he can run from his abortion record, but he certainly can’t hide from it.

Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL-3) is one of the last remaining pro-life Democrats in the U.S. House. He is the co-chair of the Congressional Bipartisan Pro-Life Caucus, has a generally pro-life voting record, and spoke at this year’s March for Life rally.

This, of course, makes him a ripe target for pro-abortion groups who see anyone to the right of Cecile Richards as an “enemy of women’s rights.” As a result, those extreme left wing groups are lining up to support the same woman who tried but failed to primary Lipinski in 2018:

On Monday, EMILY’s List, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and Democracy for America announced support for Marie Newman, who is once again challenging Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Ill., for his suburban Chicago district.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., also recently endorsed Newman, becoming the first presidential candidate to do so.

[…]

Lipinski voted against the Affordable Care Act and has broken with his party on guns, the minimum wage, and other issues, but the focus of the backlash against him has been on abortion.

The DCCC, which earlier this year made it much more difficult for Democrats to primary other Democrats, is standing by Lipinski in spite of the challenge by groups with which they are normally allies:

“I don’t want to spend one ounce of any resource on keeping Democrats in the seats that they already have. I want to make sure that we have resources to pick up seats,” said [DCCC Chair and Rep. Cheri] Bustos, who called the DCCC “an incumbent-friendly organization.”

She called the current Democratic House majority, won in the November midterms, a “fragile majority” of 17 seats over Republicans with 31 House Democrats coming from districts that had been won by President Donald Trump, including her own 17th District.

“That’s hard. That’s job No. 1, that we spend our resources where we have to spend our resources,” she said.

As for incumbents holding positions on issues that run counter to current Democratic ideology, such as abortion rights, Bustos said her representation of rural parts of her district puts her in a position where “there’s all kinds of people who could take issue with how I vote.”

Lipinski, who has been in Congress since 2005, issued a statement defending himself:

“These endorsements make clear that Marie Newman is again running a ‘tea party of the left’ campaign at the behest of national interest groups rather than focusing on taking care of the everyday concerns of people in the district as I have a track record of doing,” Lipinski said in a statement. “This type of campaign, along with Ms. Newman’s hateful, Trump-like rhetoric, her penchant for spreading falsehoods – which she was called out for recently by an independent fact-checker, and the 2018 #metoo issues in her campaign she has still yet to address, will once again be rejected by voters.”

He narrowly won the 2018 primary. By all accounts, it was bruising.

If statements from these pro-abortion groups and the DCCC are any indication, it will be another fierce battle as Democrats on the far left seek to all but ban pro-life voices from their party, while establishment Democrats would prefer spending primary campaign funds on seats they don’t already hold.

The Illinois primary will be held on March 17, 2020.

On Sunday, 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) spoke at the NAACP’s 64th annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner in Detroit.

During her speech, she it was time to “speak truth” … and then proceeded to tell a couple of whoppers about the election results for the 2018 Florida and Georgia gubernatorial races.

The Detroit News reports:

She also spoke of the Voting Rights Act and laws that “suppress the vote.” She raised the controversy that arose with Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams, who narrowly lost a bid last fall to become the first black woman elected governor in U.S. history, and Andrew Gillum, the former Tallahassee mayor. Without “voter suppression: Stacey Abams is Governor Stacey Abrams. Andrew Gillum is Governor Andrew Gillum.”

“So the truth is, we need a new voting rights act in this country with automatic voter registration,” Harris said, noting Americans have to “fight back” against Republicans “who suppress” the right to vote.

Watch Harris speak on this issue in the video clip below:

Harris’s comments came on the heels of twice-failed candidate for president Hillary Clinton’s remarks Saturday on her 2016 presidential election loss:

“You can run the best campaign, you can even become the nominee, and you can have the election stolen from you.”

And both Clinton’s and Harris’s statements were in addition to Stacey Abrams’s continued refusal to concede the Georgia governor’s race. She continues to say that she won, when she knows she didn’t. She’s been debunked over and over again, but continues to make the false claim.

Gillum, too, lost fair and square. His election was not “stolen.”

Remember when refusal to accept election results was a direct threat to democracy or something? Me, too.

As I’ve said before, it’s amazing how quickly their standards change. Always quick to cry foul when they lose. In fact, hotly contested elections are only considered “legitimate” in their eyes when they win.

It just doesn’t compute with them when election results are not in their favor that maybe, just maybe a majority of people truly believed in the other candidate and their ideas more.

The left’s attempts at delegitimizing legitimate election results are part of long-term strategy on their part to motivate minority voters into turning out to vote in critical elections. It’s a shameful tactic, and one that deserves calling out whenever they try it.

Besides, shouldn’t saying such things be considered “incitement”? By the left’s rules of engagement, anything that could motivate someone to retaliate violently should be considered an attempt at inciting voters. Doesn’t suggesting to voters that their votes were “suppressed” fit that description?

Screen cap from YouTube of Congressional testimony, (The Teapartiest)

If this Amendment to the Constitution is so vital why is there no sound reason given, and why the dramatics to push it?

I come here not as a constitutional lawyer,” said actress Patricia Arquette last week, in a statement that surprised exactly no one. She was testifying before a Congressional hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment, and as if she intended to prove her words accurate, Arquette went on to make a profoundly ignorant statement about the Constitution.

Women have waited 232 years to be enshrined as full and equal citizens,” she continued. Imagine how many females in this country had to be surprised to learn they are not, in fact, actual citizens of the United States. But Ms. Arquette next proceeded to display every reason why she should not be a spokesperson for this new drive to reinstitute the ERA. “Because in 1787, women were left out of the Constitution intentionally.”

(sigh)

Now, in one fashion, the activist thespian is somewhat accurate in her statement, but not in the manner she thinks. While it is true that women are not mentioned in the Constitution, and it was intentional, it was not due to a nefarious design by the framers. There is a detail that will come as a surprise to Arquette, and the other females and politicians in the country, leaning on this factoid.

The truth they miss, or avoid, is that the words “men” and “man” also do not appear on our crucial document. It was written for “people”, and “all persons”, and there is no gender affirmed. Turns out the framers actually were not a gaggle of misogynistic white oppressors, as implied by the likes of Arquette, and Rep. Eric Swalwell, who mangle the history.

Yes, I do need to explain this means that women were in fact included in our founding policies and rights, and therefore the claims of women having diminished citizenry are hyperbolic nonsense. But for some reason there is a renewed push to have the ERA brought back to life. It is telling that the people behind this effort consider themselves “Progressives”, as they attempt to resurrect an expired piece of legislation from nearly 50 years ago.

The ERA sprang out of the activist ’60s, and was drawn up and voted upon in the early ’70s. It successfully passed Congress, but in a needed civics lesson for many on the left, that was only half of the battle to alter our Constitution. The individual states had to vote on ratifying the new addition, and on that respect it failed. The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states. The seven-year process for completion was extended to ten years by Congress, and still it failed to achieve the required threshold. By the time the deadline arrived in June of 1982, only 35 of the required 38 states.

Every few years it seems a renewed effort crops up to attempt to get things moving on the expired amendment process. The recent #MeToo movement appears to be the most recent impetus. And as such celebrities, such as Ms. Arquette, are cropping up to make asinine claims.

Actress Dana Delany declared that as of now women are not equal. Alyssa Milano commented after the hearings in a video, and in her affected prolix she even alludes to the central theme of the Constitution, which rendered all of her claims invalid. “I don’t have equal rights under the Constitution,” she claims, with abject ignorance. And then, as if to disprove herself, she manages to illustrate the idiocy of her own claim. “It is time for the constitution to reflect the powerful principles of its first three words: We the People’”. That is correct, Alyssa — “People”, of which you and your gender are included.

To illustrate the utter vacancy behind this push all one needs to do is ask what is accomplished with ERA’s passage? What is lacking for females in America that would be addressed in this amendment? I have been asking this frequently, and any answer I receive concerns a matter in already existing federal legislation.

Females cannot be singled out based on their sex, as a result of a law few acknowledge addresses this issue — the Civil Rights Act. Title VII prohibits employment discrimination or harassment based on sex. Okay, but what about the oft-trumpeted problem in the workplace, Gender pay equality? That long-debunked claim that women are paid less for equal work, were it real, is already illegal based on the Equal Pay Act, where all employees get paid the same for the same work, regardless of gender. Both of these laws predate the creation of ERA, The CRA passed in 1964, and the EPA passed in 1963.

Numerous other federal statutes protect women from unfair treatment. The Family Medical Leave Act allows for treating of newborns, and there is the Pregnancy Discrimination Act to prevent firing or the denial of hiring based on a woman’s birthing progress. Title IX addresses equal access to educational and athletic opportunities on college campuses, and on financial matters there is the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and in regards to dwellings, there is the Fair Housing Act.

Most any other discriminations can be prevented, or deemed illegal, under the U.S. Code Title 42, Chapter 21, which covers discrimination based on gender, age, disability, race, and/or religion. This covers a wide array of areas, such as education, employment, business, federal services, and more. Chapter 21 serves as the basis of many of the civil rights legislation passed on the federal level, and gender protections are nearly always the first of the items listed as being covered.

Some are willing to say if ERA is such a harmless or redundant policy then what is the harm in passing it? This is pure deflection, because it does not address the desire to make a fundamental change to our founding document for something that is shown not to be needed. The fact that so many celebrities and politicians have to resort to lies and hysteria in order to sell this is all the reason to discount the effort entirely.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2). Screen grab via Fox News.

On Saturday, my Red State colleague Bonchie wrote about Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN-5) response to VP Mike Pence’s and Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) criticisms of her attempts at blaming America for the crisis in Venezuela.

Omar, of course, boiled their remarks down to racism and sexism.

As I’ve written before, this is a common tactic she and her fellow freshman Democratic Congresswomen embarrassingly use when they’ve been called out and have nothing of substance to add to the debate.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2) has also responded to Omar trying to pin Venezuela’s issues on American policy. During a segment on Fox News Friday night, Crenshaw said that “her opinion is not one that is based on facts or reality” and explained why:

I’ve been going to Venezuela for a long time. My family actually used to live in Caracas, and I’ve traveled there a number of times.

I’ve watched these policies ruin the country. It’s not U.S. policy. Notice how [Omar] didn’t give an example because she doesn’t have any.

But what’s actually happened is through price controls and nationalization of private industry, you’ve ruined an economy. We have a hundred years of examples to show for this. When you put in these kinds of socialist policies, it destroys a country. It happens over and over again. People starve. That is what’s happening right now. These failed ideas that keep bubbling up.

As to Omar blaming America and her use of the woman of color card, Crenshaw again pushed back:

It’s a real shame to see that we have members of Congress actually defending them, and always going back to ‘it’s the U.S.’s fault. It’s always ‘America’s fault.’ And ‘if you’re disagreeing with me, you’re disagreeing with me because of my identity.’ That’s basically what she said in that tweet and that’s really cheap, that’s a really cheap shot to take.

Watch the interview with Crenshaw below:

This is not Crenshaw’s first dance with the Woman of Color card. He responded last month to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY-14) playing the card in defense of Rep. Omar’s controversial 9/11 remarks by saying:

So what they do is they’ll use identity to try and silence anyone else from saying anything. You’re not allowed to say that because of who I am. Sorry, no, that’s not how things work in a democracy, especially amongst members of Congress.

In an interview with CBS News this past weekend, Crenshaw again stood by his criticism of Omar’s “some people did something” 9/11 comments.

Author’s Note: I first wrote this four years ago but it’s been on my mind of late and seems as fitting as ever, so I thought I’d share it here. Hope you enjoy.

I went to church yesterday for the first time in several weeks. Summer’s been busy and weekends fly by, and it’s all too easy to place church down low on the priority list.  But I felt it tugging at me a bit. Truth be told, I’ve been feeling a little bit low of late. No one thing, no enormous thing, just the paper cuts of life leaving their sting.
So I went with the hope that an hour in church would renew my spirit a bit, as it so often does.  I went with a prayer on my heart that God would speak to me there as He’s done before.  It’s the reason I’ve come to love my church so — rare is the time I attend and don’t take something meaningful away.
And as the service went on, I felt…well, not really what I’d been hoping for.  The music was good, the message was fine, but it wasn’t really connecting with me in the way I’d thought it might. Even when the pastor mentioned “those times when God speaks to us and we know it’s Him.”  Yes – I’ve experienced those times, and they’re a large part of what informs my faith. But He wasn’t really speaking to me yesterday.

Then, at the end of the service, the lights dimmed, and the pastor engaged in a sort of “question and answer” prayer session with God.  He voiced a concern or doubt, speaking directly to God, and then, in turn, a verse would appear on the screen — one which spoke to the question. I don’t recall the pastor’s first query, but the responsive verse was:  “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.“And for some reason, that prompted me to think of the times I’ve called out to God in sadness or doubt, and “heard” (in my head – not in a big out loud GOD voice): “Be still, and know that I am God.”  So I thought, “Okay, maybe that’s what I’m supposed to take away from today.”  I thought on it a bit as the question-and-answer-prayer continued for a few minutes.

And then the pastor was quiet and the lights dimmed completely. And then, a blue spotlight illuminated a lone pianist on stage.  And this is what he played:

I heard you, God.  Thank you.

Crowds line the streets to pay their respects as law enforcement officers escort the body of UNCC shooting victim and hero Riley Howell home in Waynesville, NC – 5/2/19. Screen grab via WBTV News.

21-year-old Riley Howell, whose actions saved lives in Tuesday’s deadly mass shooting at UNC Charlotte, will be laid to rest today in North Carolina with full military honors.

Charlotte’s WCNC reports:

The UNC Charlotte student who tackled a shooter on campus earlier this week will be buried with full military honors.

The announcement was made Friday afternoon at a rally in uptown where students and activists gathered to raise awareness about gun violence.

Howell was an ROTC cadet and had considered a military career.

The day after the shootings, a petition was started to have Howell buried with full military honors. It stated:

Riley Howell, 21, died while tackling the gunman of the UNCC campus shooting on April 30. He was one of 2 students killed and 4 wounded, but there may have been many more victims had Riley not rushed the gunman and tackled him.

Riley was an ROTC cadet and would have served his country. Instead, he died saving the lives of his classmates.

For his heroism, we ask the Riley be given a burial with full military honors.

The petition needed 100,000 signatures by May 31st in order to get a response from the White House. As of this writing, it has gotten almost 67,000.

Wells Funeral Home has confirmed to multiple media outlets that he will be buried with full military honors:

According to the funeral home, the ROTC made the decision to bury Howell with military honors.

Lt. Col. Chunka Smith, who runs the university’s ROTC program, said he was unable to discuss the funeral plans out of respect for the Howell family, but said the Army and National Guard “will ensure that Riley Howell is properly recognized for his heroism.”

In an emotional moment, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Kerr Putney said on Wednesday during a press conference that Howell’s actions saved lives, and that he was the “first and foremost hero” from Tuesday:

Howell’s body was escorted home by law enforcement on Thursday from Charlotte to Waynesville, North Carolina. All along that route, which is about a two and a half hour drive, first responders and civilians paid their respects to Howell:

Every single overpass and every single entrance ramp from Charlotte to Waynesville had both first responders and civilians carrying American flags, holding up signs and standing with their hands over their hearts, said Waynesville Police Chief Bill Hollingsed, whose officers were part of the motorcade.

“I was getting messages all yesterday and last night from agencies that wanted to show their respect,” Hollingsed said. “Our sole intention was to escort Riley home, but every single jurisdiction along the way was there. People are very caring. When they hear things like this and the story of what Riley did, it touches them. He is truly a hero.”

The tribute in Waynesville included hundreds of individuals — both who knew the family and who didn’t — who lined the approach to Wells Funeral Home Thursday.

A public memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm today in the Stuart Auditorium, Lake Junaluska, NC.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX-2), a Navy SEAL who lost his eye during an IED explosion in Afghanistan in 2012, paid tribute to Howell in a tweet Saturday:

A verified GoFundMe page has been started for Howell’s family.

Howell was one of two students who died that day. The other one was 19-year-old Ellis “Reed” Parlier.

Four other students were injured in the attack: 19-year-old Drew Pescaro, 20-year-old Sean Dehart, 20-year-old Rami Alramadhan, and 23-year-old Emily Houpt.

Mint Juleps and Beyond: Cocktail Choices for The Kentucky Derby

The Run For The Roses is best appreciated with proper potable preparations

In the midst of a jammed weekend with Cinco De Mayo, and today being Star Wars Day as well, we’ll expand on the revelry with the 145th Kentucky Derby. Most of Saturday will be filled with undercard races, with the main event going off just after 6:00 EST.

This year is looking to be tough to call with one of the most competitive fields, and bad weather making track conditions a major factor. Eight horses currently stand with 15-1, or better odds, and a lot of talent sits at the top. Adding to the mystery is the original favorite — Omaha Beach — is scratched, opening up the field

Hall Of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has three horses in the lineup, including new favorite Game Winner. His other two are Improbable, and Roadster, and each of them could trip the wire. Their odds are 9-2, 5-1, and 6-1 respectively, with Game winner starting wider in the 16th post, while Improbable goes off from the fifth position. I am also watching Maximum Security, winner of the Florida Derby leaving from the middle in the 7th post position.

Now, onward to the important stuff. Yes, Mint Juleps rule the day here. They are THE perfect marriage of Louisville products — horses, and bourbon. So if you have a crowd over and most want to indulge, some prep work will save you time and you can still catch the race. First bit of advice: make up some simple syrup ahead of time.

  • Simple Syrup: 2 Parts sugar to 1 Part water, measured to how much is needed. Boil the water, add sugar until fully dissolved, turn down heat to low for 10 minutes. Take off heat and allow to cool, pour into dispenser of choice.

Next, have your drink station ready to go with glassware, barware, and ingredients at the ready. Also, crush a large batch of ice ahead of time. Just a bit of planning and you can rush these out with ease.

              MINT JULEP

(in rocks glass, or metal mug)

  • Splash bourbon, add 2-3 mint leaves. Muddle
  • Fill with crushed ice
  • 2oz Bourbon (or more to taste) Bulleit, or better preferred
  • Teaspoon simple syrup

Shake briefly, garnish with sprig of mint

If you have a crowd desiring some drink variations then there are a number of other bourbon-based cocktails that fit the bill nicely. Knowing your crowd, and preparing of course is key here.

             KENTUCKY MULE

The copper cups are not required, but of course use ‘em if you got ‘em

(in mule mug, filled with crushed ice)

  • 1.5oz Bourbon
  • Juice from ½ lime (do NOT use Roses lime juice)
  • Fill with ginger beer

Garnish with sprig of mint

             THE BOURBON LIFT

This is frothy and disappears rather quickly

(in a shaker with ice)

  • 1.5oz Bourbon
  • 1oz Heavy Cream
  • 1/2 oz coffee liquor
  • 1/2oz Almond Orgeat (if unavailable, Amaretto an acceptable replacement)

Shake well for 15 seconds, strain into Collins glass. Fill with club soda (Slowly pour club soda from a few inches. This will “lift” a foamy head)

            BOURBON SMASH

This is a more potable variation of a Julep

(in shaker with light ice)

  • Muddle 2 mint leaves, and a full wheel of orange pulp (save rind)
  • 2oz Bourbon
  • Teaspoon simple syrup

(shake ingredients well, double strain over ice. Splash lime soda. Garnish with orange peel, sprig of mint)

           JOCKEY CLUB

If you have old school drinkers, go with this thoroughbred-acceptable Manhattan variant

(in shaker with ice)

  • 2oz Bourbon
  • 1/2oz Sweet Vermouth
  • Splash Maraschino Liquor

(shake well, strain over maraschino cherry in a chilled martini glass)

Be sure to modulate the crowd for the post time, as it could be easy to get too full of revelry before the fastest two minutes in sports.

It was a terrifying situation with a thankfully happy ending in Jacksonville, Florida tonight, when a Boeing 737 skidded off a runway at Naval Air Station Jacksonville into the St. John’s River. All 136 passengers and 7 crew members on board have been safely rescued with no fatalities.

The plane was apparently attempting to land when it skidded and ended up in the water. Fortunately for those on the plane, the water was shallow and the plane was never submerged.

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit responded to the scene, along with Jacksonville Fire Department, and assisted with the rescue. The JSO official twitter account posted the good news that “[e]very person is alive and accounted for.” There were two minor injuries reported.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry confirmed the successful rescue of all on board and asked for prayers while first responders did their work. Curry also noted that teams were working to contain any potentially spilled jet fuel.

The plane was a charter flight that departed from the Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba earlier tonight. The accident occurred around 9:40 pm ET.

Local CNN affiliate WJXT reported the following information from flight tracking service Flight Aware about the plane’s travels today:

  • Departed Naval Station Norfolk around 5:30 a.m. and landed at NAS Jacksonville around 7:20 a.m.
  • Departed NAS Jacksonville around 3 p.m. and landed in Guantanamo Bay around 5:30 p.m.
  • The departed Guantanamo bay around 7:30 p.m. and was attempting to land at NAS Jacksonville around 9:30 p.m.

This is a breaking news story and still developing.

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) speaks on the Senate floor. Screen grab via C-SPAN.

As my Red State colleague Bonchie wrote yesterday, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-9) thought he’d get cute by bringing a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken to a House Judiciary hearing yesterday in retaliation for Attorney General William Barr’s refusal to comply with House Democrats and their dog and pony show.

The obvious point during the “hearing” was to insinuate Barr was a “chicken.” Cohen later referred to Barr as “Chicken Barr” during interviews.

In response, Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) took to the floor of the U.S. Senate to slam Cohen’s stunt for the political theater that it was. He also questioned Cohen’s choice of KFC (bolded emphasis added):

“What this really boils down to is theater, some of it almost to the level of comedy. Let me give you an example of what I mean. There was a House hearing today. I’m about to put up a picture that actually was on CSPAN, that actually occurred in a house hearing,” Tillis said as part of his floor speech.

“You tell me whether or not the chair of this committee is actually serious about this subject when you’ve got a guy eating fried chicken in place of where they wanted Attorney General Barr to be.

“This guy didn’t have even have good enough sense to have Bojangles’ chicken.

“They’ve got, the chair and others, letting him have that kind of theater in a House committee room. Really? Can you honestly say you’re serious about this or is this like a circus and a political tool because you lost? You wanted the president to be guilty. You wanted to prove he obstructed. I get that. A lot of it was a political exercise.”

Watch Tillis’s speech below:

As I’ve written before, Bojangles is just pure delicious southern fried chicken goodness.

Cohen, in not bringing a Bojangles family variety feast box instead of a KFC bucket definitively proved he was not worth listening to (not that he had been before that, anyway).

Heh.

According to McClatchy: “There is a Bojangles’ in the bottom of Union Station, abut a mile from the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Bojangles, to their credit, responded with a bipartisan invitation for both Tillis and Cohen:

A fried chicken summit! I’m down with that. Just make sure not to forget the sweet tea.
