Trump Bulldozes “Dummy” Beto’s Gun Confiscation Plan, Lays Down Some Inconvenient Truths for Democrats

After a growing number of Democrats in recent days have criticized Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan as unhelpful and unrealistic, President Trump took his turn at the Twitter microphone this morning and delivered some inconvenient truths of his own to the struggling presidential candidate and his party.

Here’s what the President tweeted:

Trump was responding to remarks O’Rourke made at last Thursday’s Democratic presidential debate where he said “Hell yes” in response to ABC News debate moderator David Muir’s question about whether or not he was going to take away people’s guns if elected president:

MUIR: Some of the stage have suggested a voluntary buy-back for guns in this country. You have gone further. You said, quote, “Americans who own AR-15s and AK-47s will have to sell them to the government, all of them. You know that critics call this confiscation. Are you proposing taking away their guns and how would this work?

BETO O’ROURKE: I am, if it’s a weapon that was designed to kill people on a battlefield. If the high impact, high velocity, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so you would bleed to death on a battlefield and not be able to get up and kill one of our soldiers. When we see that being used against children and in Odessa, I met the mother of a 15-year-old girl who was shot by an AR-15 and that mother watched her bleed to death over the course of an hour because so many other people were shot by that AR-15 in Odessa, there weren’t enough ambulances to get to them in time. Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47. We’re not going to allow it to be used against a fellow American anymore.

As of this writing “Dummy Beto” is still trending on Twitter:

The failed Senate candidate replied by doubling down on his call to “buy back” all “assault weapons”, and accusing Trump of “cowardice”:

Beto can say Trump is a “coward” on this issue all day long but it doesn’t change the fact that Trump is right.

What Beto declared at the debate confirms the worst fears of gun rights groups and other 2nd Amendment defenders who have warned for years that Democratic efforts at gun control were part of a “step-by-step process” to eventually take away guns. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) explained this well on Thursday when asked about universal background checks:

“When you really understand what the endgame of the left is, it’s literally mandatory buybacks or as I call it: confiscation. This is a step-by-step process for them,” Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told The Hill Thursday when asked about the debate over expanded background checks for firearms sales.

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE), who has been working with Republican Senators on a compromise bill, said last Friday on CNN that O’Rourke’s statement at the debate “will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying Democrats are coming for your guns.”

To make matters worse for Democrats, O’Rourke is not the only presidential candidate calling for mandatory gun confiscation. Sens. Kamala Harris (CA) and Cory Booker (NJ), whose campaigns are going nowhere but who have nevertheless both been floated as vice presidential possibilities, have endorsed his plan.

If Beto was a wise man he would have never jumped on board the gun grabbing train and instead offered up some constitutionally sound common sense solutions that most Americans (including his fellow Texans) could get behind. But after the horrific El Paso mass shooting, he has been operating solely on emotion and anger on this issue, which is precisely why he belongs nowhere near the White House.

Because as I’ve written before, no matter how passionate, emotional, and personal an issue may be to a candidate, an unconstitutional plan is still unconstitutional.

She’s Free, Freefallin’: Kamala Harris Places ‘a Distant Fifth’ in New Presidential Poll … in California

New Democratic presidential polling information for California from an Emerson University survey shows Joe Biden and Sens. Bernie Sanders (VT) and Elizabeth Warren (MA) all firmly in the top tier with numbers in the double digits. But for home state Sen. Kamala Harris? The news is not good.

The Hill reports:

Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) are tied for first place among Democratic primary voters in California, while home-state Sen. Kamala Harris (D) is running in a distant fifth, according to a new poll.

[…]

Tech entrepreneur and political newcomer Andrew Yang notches 7 percent support in the survey, with Harris following at 6 percent support.

That is a four point slide for Harris since the last Emerson poll that was taken in late August.

The Emerson poll released Tuesday was also taken after last Thursday’s Democratic debate, which shows that much like the second debate, she didn’t do herself any favors with voters in her own state.

Harris isn’t doing any better in national post-debate polls, either:

Just how bad is the California polling information for the Harris campaign? Very bad:

The survey is a sign that Harris may face a difficult battle in her home state’s nominating contest, a delegate-rich election that carries more significance than ever because of an accelerated primary schedule that places it on Super Tuesday, when voters in a dozen states will cast their ballots for the Democratic nomination.

“Senator Kamala Harris is in trouble in her home state. If she is unable to gain momentum in Iowa or New Hampshire, come Super Tuesday she might have a similar fate to Sen. Marco Rubio in 2016, when he was unable to win his home state of Florida and dropped out of the race,” Emerson Polling Director Spencer Kimball said, referring to Rubio’s 2016 loss to President Trump in Florida’s Republican presidential primary.

The Hill also notes that there has never been a candidate who lost their home state in a primary who ultimately won the presidential nomination.

That the Harris campaign has been in a freefall over the last two and a half months is not new news, but the fact that her numbers are in the basement in her home state is a very troubling sign for her campaign. There is no other way they can spin it.

Assuming she qualifies for the 4th Democratic debate next month, you gotta think at this point that she’s only staying in the race to put herself in contention for a veep slot.

Earlier this month, Harris told a Fox News reporter that in spite of the fact that she was polling in the low single digits she should still be considered in the “top tier.” She is in the top tier only in her own mind at this point.

Andrew Yang Being Criticized for Perpetuating “Toxic” Stereotype That Asian Americans Are Smart and Successful

In spite of the fact that his polling numbers have consistently remained under 5%, businessman Andrew Yang’s following has boosted him in fundraising and polling enough to qualify him for all three Democratic debates to date.

Though his policy ideas are ones that most conservatives and Republicans wouldn’t support (universal basic income, Medicare for all for starters), he comes across as a likable guy who you wouldn’t mind having a beer with while discussing politics. He also presents himself as a guy who doesn’t take himself too seriously, which you notice when he lightheartedly makes jokes related to the fact that he’s Asian American.

Ironically enough, it is Yang’s occasional quips about his Asian American heritage that have generated criticism from other Asian Americans that the stereotypes he perpetuates about other Asians are “toxic” and harmful … to other minority groups:

During the third Democratic debate, Andrew Yang made a joke that played up an Asian stereotype: “Now, I am Asian, so I know a lot of doctors,” he quipped.

It wasn’t the first time he’d done so. Two months earlier, during the second debate, he told viewers, “The opposite of Donald Trump is an Asian man who likes math.”

Yang has also used such one-liners at rallies, and sold merchandise alluding to these comments, including baseball caps and T-shirts simply emblazoned with the word, “Math.”

Yang’s statements have spurred mixed reactions from the Asian American community. While some of his supporters told Vox that the jokes are cheeky in-group references that acknowledge Yang’s Asianness, other voters are concerned they reinforce longstanding racist stereotypes about Asian Americans and other minority groups.

[…]

While Yang may have innocuous intentions with his comments, as he said in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper this past weekend, the remarks are nonetheless reaffirming toxic tropes.

What is most “toxic” about Yang’s use of Asian stereotypes? Vox.com’s Li Zhou explains:

There’s a major reason why Yang’s broader use of stereotypes is so harmful: they help reaffirm a trope about Asian Americans commonly known as the “model minority” myth, a term that’s pretty much as offensive as it sounds.

As the name suggests, this myth, which has previously been used to treat Asian Americans as a monolithic group, implies that Asians are fixated on school and certain professions, and is damaging for a lot of reasons. It not only obscures the diversity within the Asian American community, it’s also intended to demean other minority groups, Alton Wang writes for the Washington Post:

‘Writing in the New York Times in 1966, the sociologist William Petersen coined the term “model minority” to describe the post-World War II rise of Japanese Americans, even in the face of ongoing prejudice. He contrasted their success to that of what he called “problem minorities” (a term that he set in quotation marks that clearly pointed toward black Americans), groups pulled down by oppression to the point where they would greet even equal opportunity with “either self-defeating apathy or a hatred so all-consuming as to be self-destructive.”’

[…]

The myth has been used to pit different minority groups against one another, Wang writes.

I gotta admit that I was left scratching my head after reading the Vox piece.

First things first, I have never heard of the term “model minority myth” and I’m guessing the vast majority of people who watched the Democratic debates and who read up on Andrew Yang afterwards out of curiosity don’t know what it means, either.

For whatever it meant back then, the stereotype today of Asians being smart, well-educated people who work hard to be successful is meant to be a compliment in most cases, not an insult. In the vast majority of instances, it is not used as a backwards swipe at other minority communities, either.

I suspect that most of the people who are characterizing Yang’s comments as equating to negative stereotypes are really just looking for something to be offended about. If Yang qualifies for the next debate, hopefully he’ll use the opportunity to say these three words to his “woke” critics: Get over yourselves.

‘Top Editors’ at NYT Reportedly Rejected Kavanaugh Story, Told Writers They Could Pitch to ‘Sunday Review’ Section

The fallout from the New York Times “bombshell” report that wasn’t continues.

Vanity Fair reports that book writers Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly (who are also reporters at the paper) originally went to the news side of the paper to get their story published – but it was rejected:

Why did the Kavanaugh excerpt end up in the Review? People familiar with how things went down told me that Kelly and Pogrebin initially pitched their scoop to the news side, but the top editors ultimately felt that there wasn’t enough juice to warrant a story there, let alone a big page-one treatment (the type many lefties would have been salivating for). Instead, Pogrebin and Kelly were told that they could pitch the Review, which is entirely independent of the News department. I asked for clarification as to what about the story wasn’t News-pages-worthy, but the Times declined to comment, as did Kelly and Pogrebin. (A Times spokesperson did, however, point out that “it’s not unusual for Opinion or Sunday Review pieces to break news.”)

None of this makes any sense. Why would editors on the news side reject this story, but find it suitable for the Sunday Review side?

Elizabeth Vaughn wrote this morning that Pogrebin and Kelly said Monday night their original report did include the information about how the alleged victim had no recollection of the alleged sexual assault – but that the editors somehow unintentionally removed it during the editing process.

Neither of these stories about the differences in both the news and Sunday Review sides exonerate the New York Times from being guilty of journalistic malpractice (at the very least) by way of removing vital information from the piece before it went to press (assuming what Pogrebin and Kelly said was true), information that called the explosive allegation in to question.

But should we believe the authors were victims of an innocent editing mix-up? An interview Pogrebin gave this morning on WMAL makes the writers themselves look guilty, too:

In her WMAL interview this morning, Pogrebin repeatedly refers to the woman as a “victim.” This word choice is instructive about Pogrebin’s thought process. Calling her a victim would be begging the question if the woman claimed this status for herself. She would then be only an alleged victim. But she isn’t even that. She has made no claim to be a victim, yet Pogrebin describes her as one anyway. This is a case of a reporter overriding her reporting with her opinion. Pogrebin then impugns the woman by saying she was so drunk that her memory can’t be trusted. She also says that “everyone” at the party was massively drunk and that their memories are therefore unreliable.

Does she hear herself talking? If this is true, it means Max Stier was also drunk and his memories also can’t be trusted. (Someone should ask Pogrebin whether she was present at this party about which she knows so much.) By what journalistic standard does a reporter discount what is said by the person with the most direct and relevant experience of a matter — the woman in question at the Yale party — in favor of a drunken bystander?

Hmmm.

We know from past experiences that the paper operates from the Republicans / Orange Man Bad perspective, and to hell with standards. But even with that said, this seems especially egregious and intentional no matter how you look at it, and no matter who ultimately is found to be at fault.

Ayanna Pressley Moves Forward With Kavanaugh Impeachment Effort, Even as Senior Senate Dems Balk at the Idea

Even though the “bombshell” New York Times report about an old-turned-new sexual assault allegation against Brett Kavanaugh has fallen apart under scrutiny, Squad member Ayanna Pressley has already launched an impeachment effort against the Supreme Court Justice.

Fox News reports:

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., one of the four freshman congresswomen known collectively as the “Squad,” is planning Tuesday to introduce a resolution seeking an impeachment inquiry into Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh, despite reluctance from top Democrats to pursue one and concerns about the basis for the latest accusations.

The resolution follows a New York Times report that included a new allegation of sexual misconduct from when Kavanaugh was in college — although an editors’ note later revealed that the alleged victim did not recall it taking place. In a statement, Pressley only focused on the women who came forward during Kavanaugh’s confirmation process.

Here’s what Boston.com journalist Nik DeCosta-Klipa reported from his Twitter account about Pressley’s move:

Unfortunately for Pressley, House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler is signaling the committee’s hands are too full laying the groundwork for impeaching President Trump to be able to immediately take up the Kavanaugh issue:

The House Judiciary Committee is too tied up with “impeaching the president” to take immediate action on a potential investigation into sexual misconduct allegations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Monday.

“We have our hands full with impeaching the president right now and that’s going to take up our limited resources and time for a while,” Nadler said on WNYC when pressed by host Brian Lehrer.

Nadler said his first move to investigate Kavanaugh would come next month, when FBI Director Christopher Wray appears for a previously scheduled hearing that will now feature a significant focus on the Supreme Court justice’s past — and whether the FBI’s background check was thorough enough. Nadler said his panel’s primary focus would be determining whether Kavanaugh lied to the Senate.

Meanwhile, senior Senate Democrats are telling impeachment-hungry House and Senate members to “get real”:

So the demands by 2020 presidential contenders to remove the Supreme Court justice, on the heels of new reporting about allegations of sexual misconduct, are getting panned.

“Get real,” as Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) put it Monday afternoon.

“We’ve got to get beyond this ‘impeachment is the answer to every problem.’ It’s not realistic,” Durbin said. “If that’s how we are identified in Congress, as the impeachment Congress, we run the risk that people will feel we’re ignoring the issues that mean a lot to them as families.”

[…]

“Mitch McConnell would block any impeachment. So that’s a moot point,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), a former Judiciary chairman. He said the lesson to be learned is not to rush lifetime confirmations: “Don’t ever let those mistakes happen again.” Until Democrats take back the Senate, however, there’s little they can do to halt McConnell on nominations.

Who’s gonna break this news to struggling presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris?

Beto O’Rourke’s controversial plan to take away certain types of guns should he become elected president has turned out to be as motivating -if not more so – for gun owners than President Barack Obama’s anti-gun stances.

At last week’s Democratic debate, O’Rourke said “Hell yes” in response to ABC News debate moderator David Muir’s question about whether or not he was going to take away people’s guns:

In response to Beto’s declaration, one gun store owner in Arizona decided to offer a ‘Beto Special’ on AR-15s and AK-47s – and the response was overwhelming:

When O’Rourke made the claim during Thursday night’s Democrat presidential candidate debate, Alpha Dog Firearms Owner Matt Boggs was outraged, he says in an interview with The HolloNet:

“I saw the comments that he made, and I was kinda like, ‘You know what: the Hell with this guy.’”

Boggs said O’Rourke’s made [him] determined to sell more guns – even if it meant losing money on them. So, the next morning he announced his “Beto Specials” on AR15 and AK47 rifles on his store’s Facebook page:

That evening, the store announced that they had sold out in less than four hours:

UPDATE: SOLD OUT. More deals will be on the website soon. Y’all broke our internet today!!!

Our $349.99 AR deal sold out in less than 4 hours. We’re trying to process the orders and work on getting more special deals for our good friend gun grabber Beto

As Beto gets louder on this issue, look for more gun specials from gun store owners, and a higher demand for the types of weapons he wants to confiscate. As we learned during the Obama administration, tacking to the far left on gun control usually means increased sales at gun stores. These types of threats typically have a galvanizing effect on gun owners and spurs them them to stock up.

This is most certainly not what Beto O’Rourke intended when he announced his gun confiscation policy, but that is what happens when you’re someone like Beto who doesn’t think your policies through.

In the immediate aftermath of the “report” from the New York Times over the weekend about an old-turned-new sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a number of high-profile Democratic politicians and candidates for president weighed in and demanded his impeachment.

This in spite of the fact that the correction the paper issued hours after they were first alerted to it by conservative new media noted that the alleged victim does not even recall the alleged incident.

This is also in spite of the fact that the person who made the allegation originally is a Clinton-era liberal lawyer who has a vested interest in destroying Kavanaugh (which naturally calls into question the lawyer’s motivations):

We won’t even dwell on the fact that it was a liberal lawyer—one who happened to have been pitted against Kavanaugh during the Bill Clinton impeachment hearings—who opportunistically claims to have recalled this 35-year-old incident and reported it to the FBI.

As we all know, facts don’t care about your feelings, but Democrats don’t care about the facts. So the beat rolled on well into Monday with more Democrats lining up to board the “Impeach Kavanaugh” train, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY).

Apparently AOC didn’t want to waste the opportunity to insert herself into the debate, and she did so by posting a video clip of her during her 2018 campaign trashing highly educated “rich” men like Kavanaugh who she claimed “believed” they could get away with sexual assault.

While it’s not odd for Ocasio-Cortez to go the narcissistic route by making herself a focal point of any debate, what was odd about her tweets this morning about Kavanaugh is that she initially deleted the first one:

11 minutes after jtLOL noted she had deleted her original tweet, AOC reposted an identical one:

She followed up with another one from that same speech, because AOC has rarely seen a video of herself that she didn’t like.

But why did she delete her first tweet initially? This explanation from Free Beacon’s Alex Griswold is the only one that makes sense:

Yep. Might as well roll with it. Gotta get those RTSs, likes, and all the media attention that goes along with them.

In any event, no matter the reason for deleting and reposting, Ocasio-Cortez got dunked in the comments:

I want to believe that. I really do.
