FILE – In this Sunday, June 17, 2018 photo provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, people who were taken into custody related to cases of illegal entry into the United States, sit in one of the cages at a facility in McAllen, Texas. On Wednesday, June 20, 2018, The Associated Press has found that stories circulating on the internet that President Barack Obama did not oversee the separation of 90,000 migrant children and their parents at the U.S. border are untrue. (U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Rio Grande Valley Sector via AP)

Probably the most emotional issue in the immigration debate is how to detain minor children apprehended with alleged parents. If they were American citizens and arrested the answer would be amazingly simple. The kids would go into foster care until the custodial parent was released. No one would really care about the separation of parent and child. But because we are dealing with illegal immigrants and there is a perfect storm of Trump-hate bringing together people who want open borders and people who despise and oppose Trump as part of “muh principles,” what should be a fairly routine action has been inflated into what we’re supposed to believe is a national scandal.

Central to that political fight is something known as the Flores Settlement Agreement (FSA).

The FSA, which is a consent decree between the US Justice Department and a class of plaintiffs lead by Jenny Lisette Flores, requires the government to hold minor detained illegals in the least restrictive setting. In Flores’s case, she had been held in a detention facility with adults of both sexes. The consent decree was never intended to be permanent but our black-robed overloards have seen it differently.

…The law actually requires that these people be detained under most circumstances and does not place a time constraint on the detention, nor does it make exceptions for children. The constraint on holding children in certain facilities emanated from a court settlement that began in the 1980s and crystalized in 1997 as a temporary arrangement until 45 days after government promulgates a permanent regulation defining the parameters of the holding facilities for children along safe and sanitary guidelines laid out in the settlement.

Until now, courts have lawlessly “legislated” a 20-day deadline for holding children without such certified facilities or else they have to be released. Moreover, Judge Dana Sabraw created a new edict last year contrary to law that children can’t be released alone once they come with an adult and that the adult must be released with them. Thus, the expansion of Flores and Sabraw’s ruling spawned the worst period of migration in our history, where primarily one adult would come with one child, the perfect scam.

Last night, the White House revealed–in a scoop to The Daily Caller–that the administration would roll out a rule change to eliminate the FSA.

The Trump administration is seeking to terminate the Flores settlement, an immigration-related court order that prevents most migrant family units from being held in detention centers for more than 20 days, the Daily Caller has learned.

Eliminating the Flores settlement would allow the U.S. government to hold migrant children and their families indefinitely while they await court proceedings. The 1997 Flores v. Reno decision by the Supreme Court laid out specific conditions under which unaccompanied migrant children could be held in detention, and was later expanded to place time restrictions on the detention of migrant children accompanied by family members.

The new rule is expected to be rolled out during a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press conference on Wednesday morning.

“The Administration is closing one of the legal loopholes that has allowed human traffickers and smugglers to exploit our vulnerabilities at the southern border,” a senior administration official told the Daily Caller. “President Trump has made it clear that he’s going to secure America’s border at all cost and this rule plays a vital role in the strategy to restore the integrity to our immigration system and our national security.”

Now it is official

(Read the whole press release)

The left’s outrage meter is pegged in the red zone:

In a stunning escalation, the Trump administration announced Wednesday that it will abrogate a decades-old legal agreement in order to indefinitely detain immigrant families.

The proposed termination of what’s known as the Flores agreement is President Donald Trump’s most aggressive—and most legally suspect—attempt to circumvent legal protections for undocumented children since his disastrous “zero-tolerance” policy resulted in the separation of thousands of immigrant families.

This rule fulfills the requirements of Flores by agreeing that detention facilities will not be restrictive. In theory, this should be case closed. In reality, because the overseeing judge is in lawfare country in the Ninth Circuit, it will inevitably be delayed by court action. Ultimately, I believe the administration will prevail because the FSA really just requires the government to hold unaccompanied minors in the least restrictive setting and the various time limits are simply imposed by judges acting outside their authority but who have been kowtowed to by this an other administrations because of lack of imagination.

Daniel Horowitz, who is never quite happy with anything, points out the costs of this abrogation of authority on the part of the executive branch dating back to the Clinton Administration (if you want some real outrage dialed up to 11, give the link a click).

It’s truly difficult to overstate the evil that expanded Flores has done to our security, our fiscal solvency, and Latin American children. By creating a huge market incentive to exploit children for mass migration by adults, it has:

Indeed, even if the wave were to end today, we will likely be seeing the effects of the crime wave and fiscal cost for years to come.

But to gauge the significance of this you only have to look at the people who oppose it:

Love the butthurt in this thread

If the road to Hell is paved with good intentions then our judiciary has constructed a 98-lane superhighway with a downhill 60-degree grade heading straight into the Ninth Circle and let the open borders advocates and corrupt judges fuel the car with nitromethane and hit the accelerator. Walking away from the FSA will not be quick and it will not be a panacea but it is at least an attempt to pop the drogue chute.

President Trump Says No To Universal Background Checks

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)

In the immediate aftermath of the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, President Trump unsettled some on the right by seeming to endorse so-called “universal background checks” for gun purchases.

President Trump traveled to hospitals in Texas and Ohio Wednesday to console victims recovering from mass shootings that left 31 dead, and he pledged to advance gun control legislation, declaring himself “all in favor” of expanded background checks.

Mr. Trump told reporters earlier in the day that he is working with congressional leaders in both parties on legislation focusing on more background checks for firearms purchases.

“There is a great appetite for background checks,” Mr. Trump said at the White House. “I’m looking to do background checks. I think background checks are important.”

This is pretty much what he said after the Parkland shooting (details on that are in Bonchie’s CNN’s S.E. Cupp Shows Us That Those Screaming the Loudest About Conservative “Principles” Rarely Have Any). And we all know what became of that. Be that as it may, there were calls of “betrayal” and vows to not vote for him in 2020.

By last, Trump had started to back away from the idea. The first hint was in the Wall Street Journal:

While the president is vacationing at his golf course in New Jersey, White House officials began meeting this week with congressional staff in a bid to find areas of compromise.

“It’s very simple: There’s nobody that is more pro-Second Amendment than Donald Trump, ” Mr. Trump told reporters Tuesday before departing for a speech in Pennsylvania. “But I don’t want guns in the hands of a lunatic or a maniac, and I think if we do proper background checks, we can prevent that.”

Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son who often speaks with his father about his views on gun laws, has raised concerns about both red-flag legislation and about tightening background checks, according to people familiar with the matter.

This was mocked in the failing group blog, Salon, but the one thing we know for certain about Trump’s decisionmaking process is that he trusts very, very few people and the few he does trust have enormous influence.

By yesterday morning, the Washington Post was reporting that background checks didn’t seem all that likely, in fact the article is sort of a monument to invective masquerading as reporting:

On Monday, Democratic leaders said they viewed Trump’s shifting posture as a sign that he was never serious about leading a push to tighten gun laws.

“We’ve seen this movie before: President Trump, feeling public pressure in the immediate aftermath of a horrible shooting, talks about doing something meaningful to address gun violence, but inevitably, he backtracks in response to pressure from the NRA and the hard-right,” Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement. “These retreats from President Trump are not only disappointing but also heartbreaking, particularly for the families of the victims of gun violence.”

And by last night, the Post headline read Trump tells NRA chief that universal background checks are off the table.

President Trump talked Tuesday with National Rifle Association chief executive Wayne LaPierre and assured him that universal background checks were off the table, according to several people familiar with the call.

Trump told LaPierre that the White House remained interested in proposals that would address weapons getting into the hands of the mentally ill, including the possibility of backing so-called “red flag” laws that would allow the police to temporarily confiscate guns from people who have been shown to be a danger to themselves or others.

Nonetheless, the president’s conversation with LaPierre, which was first reported by the Atlantic, further reduced hopes that major new gun-safety measures will be enacted after the latest round of mass shootings.

My prediction is that the Red Flag law that is being discussed either goes nowhere either because the more we learn about how they work the scarier they become.

There are a couple of big lessons here.

President Trump has an annoying and often counterproductive habit of thinking out loud. One should not mistake what he says in any non-teleprompter moment as an indication of what he will end up doing.

While Trump has manifest weaknesses, one he doesn’t have, and one which ran riot inside the Bush White House, is a willingness to sell out his supporters to try to curry favor with people who will always hate him. If, at any time, he here’s that siren song of bipartisan agreement on commonsense gun laws, Donald Trump, Jr., will be there to pull him back to reality.

‘Unplanned’ Star Teams with Pro-Life Group to Help Mothers in Need, & Her Personal Connection Goes Well Beyond the Movie

Actress Ashley Bratcher has a new mission: to help mothers facing unplanned pregnancies.

The star of the Left-derided film Unplanned has teamed with Heartbeat International in the creation of an educational scholarship.

The Unplanned Movie Scholarship fund is now accepting donations, and it vows to provide expectant moms in need a $5,000 annual supplement to their education.

The description reads as follows on the initiative’s official website:

While plans may shift when the unexpected happens, it doesn’t mean that dreams need to stop completely. Inspired by her role as Abby Johnson in the movie Unplanned, Ashley Bratcher is partnering with Heartbeat International, the largest pregnancy help network in the world, to offer moms facing unplanned pregnancies educational scholarships so that they can continue pursuing their dreams while raising their babies.

We will honor these brave women who chose life with a $5,000 annual scholarship to put toward their education. By encouraging positive choices, we can literally transform families and communities.

Thus serves as a reminder, I suppose, that even Hollywood is comprised of diversity of thought.

As covered by RedState’s Sarah Lee Wednesday, actress-turned-benevolent-bullhorn Alyssa Milano recently expressed gratitude for all she has — thanks to her two previous abortions:

“I would not have my children [Elizabeth, 4, and son Milo, 7] — my beautiful, perfect, loving, kind and inquisitive children who have a mother who was so very, very ready for them. I would not have my career. I would not have the ability or platform I use to fight against oppression with all my heart. I would never have met my amazing husband, David, whose steadfast and immeasurable love for me sustains me through these terrifying times.”

From the scholarship site, by contrast:

Help us support mothers as they go to school so they can provide more for their families and make responsible choices that will impact not only their lives, but the lives of their little ones.

On the homepage, Ashley recounts reaction to the pro-life film, which was hit with an ‘R’ rating by the MPAA (here), threatened with banning in Canada, and whose account was canceled by Twitter (here):

After the release of Unplanned, I received an overwhelming number of messages from women who had been touched by the film. Some described the sacrifices they made in choosing life, and some were currently facing unplanned pregnancies that they feared would interfere with completing or attending college. It was then that I realized the need to reverse the negative stigma surrounding unplanned pregnancies.

The response inspired her:

I wanted to be a part of empowering mothers to chase their dreams and to provide a means for those who chose life to continue their educations.

I hope that the Unplanned Movie Scholarship will not only empower mothers seeking to continue to their education but that it will also spread awareness for the thousands of Heartbeat affiliate pregnancy resource centers across the world. So many women do not realize the resources and support that is available to them and this is an opportunity to show them that they’re not alone.

[Heartbeat International] and I share a common goal: to reach and change hearts through love and compassion. We invite you to join us!

The actress has an especially personal connection to the issue, aside from her involvement with the movie: Not long ago, she received a startling revelation — she herself was almost aborted.

Her mother explained to her:

“I need to tell you something that I’ve never told you before. I was going to abort you. I was at the clinic sitting on the table when the nurse, who was very pregnant, came in to talk to me. I felt sick. I couldn’t do it. I got up and walked out … and I chose you.”

Ashley recalled the above to Fox & Friends, prior to the film’s release.

“I’m grateful that God, through His providence, planted me here to tell my story,” she told the show. “And that I have the privilege of sharing this film with the world.”

Now she’s sharing something more: The opportunity for women in crisis to make better lives for themselves. And for their children.

In May, Oscar-winning actor and dad to Angelina Jolie surely made some noggins combust when he proclaimed Donald J. Trump “the greatest president since Abraham Lincoln” (see here).

Well, brace for more blowout.

In a video posted to Twitter Monday, Mr. Voight took aim at “the radical Left” and their far-from-tolerant disposition before giving the President yet another title: the greatest president of this century.

“This is not peace,” he says in the clip. “This is not love. This is hate among the radical Left.”

Jon explains that “no amount of ‘book smart’ will show the given policy of what truth stands for. Truth is a powerful emotion.” Furthermore, he says, “Love is what we should be voting for.”

The actor expounds further on that whole “hate” idea:

“[T]his is war among the Left. They have hate. It’s like a venom. No words of God, no words of love, but a radical emotion of hate.”

He also praises the Commander-in-Chief for his stance in defense of Israel:

“I’ve said this many times, and I’m saying it again: From the deep truths of my heart and soul, President Trump is a man of truths, love, and justice for the American people. And also for the people of a sacred place — Israel.”

Trump certainly hasn’t shied away from defending the tiny and threatened Middle Eastern nation. He did so again on the White House lawn Wednesday, with a 2020 tie-in:

“In my opinion, the Democrats have gone very far away from Israel, I cannot understand how they can do that. They don’t want to fund Israel. They want to take away foreign aid to Israel. They want to do a lot of bad things to Israel. In my opinion, you vote for a Democrat, you’re being very disloyal to Jewish people and very disloyal to Israel.”

“Not only does [the President] love our country, the United States of America,” Jon notes, “but he has a love for the people of all nations.”

In closing, the Ray Donovan star asks for prayer for the Leader of the Free World as he wishes for clarity and a change of heart within those who detest him:

“Let us pray for peace. Let us pray for this country, that President Trump will take on four more years of his strength, devotion, knowledge of truths. And all that doubt and who have extreme hate and anger toward President Trump, may they be shown differently, that President Trump is the greatest president of this century. Let us take a stand for liberty and justice for all. God bless.”

Given the climate of Tinseltown, personally, I find Jon Voight’s perpetually outspoken endorsement of The Donald remarkable. If you think you and I are aware of Hollywood’s left-wing lean, how much more so must be a man who’s appeared in 98 productions starting in 1963?

But he isn’t wavering with his support.

Also unfaltering is his hope — for the United States and for the world.

Alyssa Milano Had Two Abortions In The Space Of A Year And THANK GOD Because Her Life Is THE BEST Now

Westlake Legal Group Untitled-1-7-620x413 Alyssa Milano Had Two Abortions In The Space Of A Year And THANK GOD Because Her Life Is THE BEST Now Front Page Stories Featured Story Alyssa Milano Abortion

Ms. Milano continues to truly embody the name of her podcast, “Sorry Not Sorry.”

She has no regrets, you see. And absolutely nothing to apologize for. Especially when it comes to the two abortions she had in 1993 while, she says, on birth control and in a serious, committed relationship.

Because if she hadn’t sucked those little lives out of her uterus, she wouldn’t have had the career and the family she has today.

Oh, does my description of abortion bother you? Sorry not sorry.

Alyssa Milano, 46, revealed in the latest episode of her podcast this week that she made the “devastating” decision to have two abortions while in a serious relationship in 1993.
Milano, who was in her early 20s and had just finished working on “Who’s the Boss?” at the time, said she knew she wasn’t ready to be a mother, according to People.
“I chose. It was my choice,” she said on “Alyssa Milano: Sorry Not Sorry.” “And it was absolutely the right choice for me.”

“I would not have my children [Elizabeth, 4, and son Milo, 7] — my beautiful, perfect, loving, kind and inquisitive children who have a mother who was so very, very ready for them,” she said. “I would not have my career. I would not have the ability or platform I use to fight against oppression with all my heart. I would never have met my amazing husband, David, whose steadfast and immeasurable love for me sustains me through these terrifying times,” according to People.

Ok so the basic premise here is that Milano sacrificed — and there’s no mistaking what she’s saying; she talks about how difficult the decision (both times) was for her to make — her children to the God of career and her now “beautiful, perfect” children and “amazing” husband. For such a progressive woman, that’s very Old Testament stuff. And I’m going to refrain from a long diatribe about the words people use when they’re trying to convince themselves (and everyone else) that their situation is perfection. But there is a psychological term for it: reaction formation.

Reaction formation, according to Wikipedia is:

“In psychoanalytic theory, reaction formation is a defense mechanism in which emotions and impulses which are anxiety-producing or perceived to be unacceptable are mastered by exaggeration of the directly opposing tendency.”

I’d say exhortations of immeasurable love and fighting oppression with all her heart and soul fit into this category.

Anyway, I’m not trying to judge women who get pregnant unexpectedly — twice in the same year — and feel incapable of the responsibility. I think that’s pretty normal for young people.

And I think Milano is very, very normal. Almost…typical. Certainly of the mantra she’s selling that viewing human life as disposable is really no biggie.

What’s extraordinary and well outside the norm are the young ladies who face the same set of circumstances and give a thought to the child’s life and the ways in which providence can play a role in an individual’s life path.

Milano wasn’t strong enough to protect herself better against an unwanted pregnancy; nor, it would seem, to accept the consequences of her own choices.

So, even if her life is marvelous because she’s not burdened with two unwanted babies she definitely never would have loved, she’s still pretty marvelously weak when it comes to making good, women’s health-related decisions and realistically accepting the results of those decisions.

Not sure she’d be my go-to for advice on contraception or pregnancy, but that’s likely ok with her. Her life is so, so good.

In a move that was entirely predictable from the outset, Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI) and Ilhan Omar (MN) on Monday brought up the idea during their press conference that the U.S. should reconsider giving aid to Israel after the country barred them from entry last Thursday on security grounds.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) pushed back on them on Twitter Tuesday, which we’ll get to in a minute. But first, a recap of what Omar said Monday about funding.

During the presser, where Tlaib broke down in tears describing how as a child she had to watch her mother go through “dehumanizing checkpoints” in order to visit relatives, Omar floated the idea of the U.S. cutting off aid to Israel:

Omar said U.S. aid to Israel should be tied to how Palestinians are treated.

“Fortunately, we the United States have a constructive role to play. We give Israel more than $3 million in aid every year. This is predicated on their being an important ally in the region and the only democracy in the Middle East, but denying a visit to duly elected members of Congress is not consistent with being an ally, and denying millions of people freedom of movement or expression or self-determination is not consistent with being a democracy,” she said.

“We must be asking, as Israel’s ally, the Netanyahu government stop the expansion of settlements on Palestinian land, and ensure full rights for Palestinians if we are to give them aid. These are not just my views. These are the views held by the range of experts, peace advocates on this issue. We know Donald Trump would love nothing more than to use this issue to pit Muslims and Jewish Americans against each other,” she added.

Whatever anyone wants to say about Omar and Tlaib (and The Squad in general), they have turned deceiving gullible people (their supporters and the media) by operating on the pretense of wanting peace and harmony between the Jews and Palestinians into almost an art form.

When Omar first announced several weeks ago that she and Tlaib were planning this trip, you better believe they both knew in advance about Israel’s anti-BDS law that forbids anyone promoting the anti-Semitic BDS movement entry into their country.

That their request to visit Israel was denied wasn’t a surprise to anyone. It certainly wasn’t to the two Congresswomen who pretend that supporting a hate group that doesn’t believe Israel has the right to exist, and accusing Jews of dual loyalty and buying off lawmakers can’t possibly be anti-Semitism.

Clearly both Omar and Tlaib manipulated the situation to their advantage, but not everyone is falling for it.

One person most definitely not falling for it is Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has been a vocal critic of The Squad’s tactics in the past. He responded to their push to cut off funding for Israel by saying we should actually give them more:

In two more tweets, he explained why:

Graham has taken several trips to Israel this year. One was in March to discuss the Golan Heights issue. Another was in July, where he stated he wanted “to see the lay of the land, how’s their inventory of missiles holding up, and I think we need more missile funding not less.”

The Economist Gives the Hottest of Takes On Poor People Living Longer and the Environment

Westlake Legal Group africa-drought-620x413 The Economist Gives the Hottest of Takes On Poor People Living Longer and the Environment The Economist Poor People Politics Meat Longer Lives healthy Global Warming Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story environment dumb cult Climate Change

Everything old is new again. That means Malthusianism was bound to return as society becomes more subjugated to the vapid arguments and hypocrisy of the modern environmentalist movement.

The Economist put out a new article today explaining how production and distribution of meat in places like Africa is leading to much better outcomes for human beings via with healthier, longer lifespans.

Of course, because modern leftist thought on the environment, and specifically global warming, relies on the nonsensical idea that humanity no longer has any ability to innovate to changing conditions, they present this objectively great news as a dichotomy of sorts. Sure, poor people are living happier, healthier, longer lives, but that’s “bad news” for the environment.

You see, more meat means more carbon emissions, which means we are all going to die in a fiery ball of death. The fact that poorer people in third world countries may actually get a chance at a real standard of living can’t be seen as unequivocally good news.

Who gives writers at The Economist the moral right to dictate who’s actions are and aren’t destroying the environment? Perhaps the writer of this article should lead by example? I somehow doubt they are. You’ll notice that those who shout the loudest about carbon emissions often emit the most. Take the “Royal Family,” which spends a lot of their time lecturing the little people on the evils of global warming and the need to cut back on emissions. That doesn’t apply to them though, as they recently took two private flights that emitted more emissions than the average British citizen does in an entire year of living.

Past that, the assumptions made in the article are ridiculous and ignore everything we know about human ingenuity. For decades Malthus and others spread the idea that population growth would outstrip a linear food supply. That theory turned out to be abject garbage. In reality, humans innovate and we are currently feeding more people, better than we were when the population was half of what it is now.

Putting aside the arguments of whether meat production is really going to cause global warming or the seas to rise, etc. even if those things were true, there’s no reason to believe we can figure out ways to not only survive, by thrive in such conditions. If the cost of “saving the planet” is dooming billions of the world’s poor to disease and shorter lifespans, that’s a cost that’s too high to pay.

Instead of pretending we can somehow control the climate via coercion of human behavior, which is unrealistic even if you believe in worst case scenarios, we should be putting our efforts into coming up with new technologies that continue to better the human experience for everyone. Fretting about poor people getting to eat more meat isn’t helping anyone. It also happens to be morally bankrupt.

New Comedy Central Series Based in Chicago Will Intentionally Avoid Any Mention of the Jussie Smollett Story

Show creators deem the issue untouchable – “There’s nothing funny about it.”

In the Comedy Central program “South Side” — midway through its inaugural season — they have shown a willingness to feature real-life stories and characters involving the setting of program, the city of Chicago. However, in a recent interview, the show’s creator and head writer declared firmly that the most risible story to come out of the city this year is completely off-limits. There will be no mention at all of the Jussie Smollett controversy.

Describing the incident as “embarrassing”, writer/producer Bashir Salahuddin told The Wrap that they will not be addressing the Smollett story in any fashion. “It’s a straight-up tragedy,” Salahuddin says by way of explanation. A tragedy — describing the hoax that Smollett himself perpetrated all because he wanted to leverage a better salary for his role on the primetime drama “Empire”.

“South Side” follows the lives of two men living in South Chicago, plying their trade and also working side hustles for extra money. The program has incorporated stories and sports figures rooted in the city, so the question of whether the event surrounding Smollett — a Chicago resident himself, and the location of his hoax — was a valid one. But the head of the show has shut down any mention of the incident.

This continues the hesitancy of many in the entertainment industry to train a satirical eye on the people and events on the left side of the political spectrum. Recall during the Obama years how reticent the late-night talk shows, and Saturday Night Live had been to make sharp comments or crack jokes that were overly critical of the President. Contrast this with how swiftly Donald Trump was served up on these same shows, well before he had even been inaugurated. (It is noted, SNL was willing to create a segment that mocked Smollett.)

This desire by content creators to treat one side with kid gloves shows a self-neutering that completely undermines any of the commentary and satirical heft to which they might try staking a claim. Salahuddin, a former head writer for Jimmy Fallon, wants to seem to have a social commentary bite, but in turn he has removed some of his own teeth. “The whole situation is unfortunate,” he says in sidestepping the story entirely. “There’s nothing funny about it.”

Nothing funny. A celebrity stages his own hoax, and does so for venal purposes. The hoax itself was a comedic misfire, and the players involved also carried mockable traits. Now roll in the involvement of corrupt local officials, the media coverage, and Smollett’s own behavior in the media following the incident. Hell, you even have a number of national political figures and Presidential candidates who foolishly weighed in on the “attack”.

Despite all of that fertile material the head writer cannot see anything that could possibly be used for show content. This will not do much to illustrate just how connected to the inner workings of the city the show will be going forward.

Video: Joe Biden Attempts to Explain Away His Parkland Gaffe, and It Does Not Go Well

Last week, I wrote about reports that allies of Joe Biden were trying to get his campaign to scale back his appearances due to the large amount of gaffes he’d made in recent weeks.

The belief was that he was more prone to committing gaffes later in the day when he was tired, and that cutting back on campaign stops would make him less likely to flub. It was an idea that was ripped by, among others, former President Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod.

Perhaps the most troubling among the gaffes were the comments he made on August 10th about the Parkland kids visiting him “when I was vice president”:

The frontrunner to become the Democratic presidential candidate told reporters in Iowa on Saturday that “those kids in Parkland came up to see me when I was vice president.” But when they went to Capitol Hill, lawmakers were “basically cowering, not wanting to see them. They did not want to face it on camera.” The problem with this tale? The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that left 17 dead took place in 2018, more than a year after Biden left the White House.

He actually made the remarks twice that day. Watch:

Fresh off of a week of vacationing in Delaware, Biden was in Iowa on Tuesday and attempted to explain away his remarks about Parkland. It did not go well:

Speaking at a campaign event, Biden said he “was still called vice president” when he met with the students from Parkland.

“I also met with the kids from Parkland, in the Capitol,” Biden said. “I was still called vice president, but it was in ’18.”

His memory of the event, however, remains incomplete.

“They asked me to come speak to them in the rotunda,” Biden said, before pausing to think.

“I think it was the rotunda, it was one of the buildings, or one of the rooms in the Capitol,” he said.

It’s sounds even worse than it reads. Watch the video:

“I was still called vice president”? SMH. He’s still called vice president now.

Whoever wrote this for him to say should be suspended from campaign duties for a couple of weeks to get them to consider how ridiculous it came cross. If they were trying to definitively rebut rumors that Biden was having trouble handling the day to day rough and tumble of the campaign trail, they failed – and failed bigly.

Marble Halls & Silver Screens Ep. 2: The Time Served Edition

Unfortunately, The Chicken Wars really began to heat up online after I recorded yesterday, so while I briefly touch on the new theater of the culture war — which centers around the debate over which is superior, Popeye’s new chicken sandwich or the Lord’s Chicken, Chick-Fil-A — I don’t do it the justice it deserves. I’ll save that for next week. Because it’s both hilarious and (I think) meaningful.

As for what this week’s show does offer an in-depth analysis of, I have a very special guest on this week to talk criminal justice reform. My friend Matthew Hurtt, Director of External Relationships for Americans for Prosperity Foundation’s Grassroots Leadership Academy, joins me for an extended discussion on cjr, the First Step Act, the amazing Matthew Charles, and why breaking down barriers to people re-entering society after a jail term is the right move under almost any metric.

Additionally, this week goes into the Omar/Tlaib dis-invitation to visit Israel. Were the ladies right in blaming Donald Trump for influencing Netanyahu to make a decision restricting their visitation (restrictions, I might add, they were unwilling to meet)? I try to answer that question.

Rounding out the politics side of the show, I talk at length about the Democrat warning to SCOTUS that the high court better get in line on the gun issue (which, it turns out, they’re more liberal on than most Americans) or they may find themselves restructured. I wrote about that issue here, and you should read it. Because if the Democrats find themselves in a position of real power again, they will no doubt try to pack the court.

Finally, this week’s Hollywood coverage is a little lighter and is essentially a run down of things I haven’t seen yet, but will be putting on the list to review on future shows, including The Politician on Netflix and The Last Black Man in San Francisco (which I think I just moved to the top of my list based on the WSJ review).

There’s also a bit on whether or not Disney will be inadvertently used as a mouthpiece for the Chinese in the ongoing protests happening in Hong Kong. I know, right? Be careful who you sign up with…

Check out the episode below.

You can also find me on Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts. And, of course, old reliable, Spreaker. Go ahead and subscribe to those because a.) it’s free and b.) you never know when I might be talking about something your were just thinking about…

Enjoy!
