As I wrote last Friday, New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay took issue with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) after the Senator gave former NFL QB-turned-social justice warrior Colin Kaepernick a brief history lesson on the words of abolitionist and statesman Frederick Douglass.

As it turns out, New York City Councilman Justin Brannan (D) had something to say about Cruz’s history lesson, too. We’ll get to that in just a minute.

To recap, on July 4th Kaepernick quoted a portion of Douglass’s July 5, 1852 speech about Independence Day:

Sen. Cruz saw the Douglass quote and who posted it, and decided to add some much-needed context. After noting the quote Kaepernick used didn’t give an complete picture of Douglass’s views on America, Cruz spent one tweet providing some background on the speech, and then sent several tweets quoting directly from the speech. He concluded by encouraging everyone to read the full speech in context.

Gay, who is a Kaepernick fan, tweeted to Cruz the next day by saying “Frederick Douglass is an American hero, and his name has no business in your mouth.” But once Cruz clapped back, Gay backed down a bit and they made their peace.

In the middle of all of this, Brannan gave his .02 worth in response to Gay’s original tweet:

Cruz saw Brannan’s swipe, and was not having it:

Boom.

Brannan responded back by telling Sen. Cruz that if he was such an expert on Douglass and his views on slavery, he would support a reparations bill introduced by 2020 presidential candidate and Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) back in April:

Here’s a better idea: Brannan and his fellow Democrats should take NFL legend Burgess Owens’s advice and pay out the reparations themselves. As Owens said at the House reparations hearing last month:

“I do believe in restitution,” he continued. “Let’s point to the party that was part of slavery, KKK, Jim Crow, that has killed over 40% of our black babies, 20 million of them.”

“State of California, 75 percent of our black boys can’t pass a standard reading and writing test. A Democratic state. So yes, let’s pay restitution. How about a Democratic Party pay for all the misery brought to my race and those — after we learn our history — who decide to stay there, they should pay also.”

Brannan later retweeted comments from David Lobl, a former special assistant to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D):

Except that’s exactly what Cruz did.

In Leaked Memos, British Ambassador To The U.S. Calls Trump ‘Inept, ‘Insecure,’ Says Administration Is ‘Dysfunctional’

In newly leaked diplomatic memos sent to the British Foreign Commonwealth Office, British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Kim Darroch delivers some nasty blows to President Trump and his administration. He wrote, “As seen from here, we don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.” In fact, it’s a real possibility that “his career could end in disgrace.”

The memos were obtained by The Daily Mail and a UK official confirmed their authenticity to CNN.

The author wrote that this type of leak is “unprecedented” (I wonder about that) and worries that these “bombshell comments risk angering the notoriously thin-skinned President and undermining the UK’s ‘special relationship’ with America.”

According to  The Daily Mail, Sir Kim:

Writes that, “for a man who has risen to the highest office on the planet, President Trump radiates insecurity.”

Describes bitter conflicts within Trump’s White House – verified by his own sources – as “knife fights.”

Warns that Trump could have been indebted to “dodgy Russians.”

Claims the President’s economic policies could wreck the world trade system.

Says the scandal-hit Presidency could “crash and burn” and that “we could be at the beginning of a downward spiral… that leads to disgrace and downfall.”

Says Trump spends his days in the Oval Office asking his White House team, Cabinet members and senior Republicans for their opinions “on the business of the moment.”

Reports about “vicious infighting and chaos” in the White House — which Trump has dismissed as “fake news” — are “mostly true.”

The ambassador called Trump’s Iran policy “incoherent and chaotic” and said, “Its unlikely that US policy on Iran is going to become more coherent any time soon. This is a divided Administration.” He worries that “Trump could still attack Iran.”

On the President’s June 18th rally in Orlando, FL to kick-off his campaign for reelection, Sir Kim reported that Trump had “electrified an audience of 20,000 supporters” adding that “the audience was a sea of the now iconic red MAGA [Make American Great Again] caps. The crowd looked almost exclusively white, with a pretty even mix of men and women, young and old: there were families in every stand. For some, attending had meant a long wait in 30C heat and humidity.”

Sir Kim wrote that he “breathed a sigh of relief” when Trump and Melania boarded Air Force One. “Their State visit to the UK was finally over and, despite minor hiccups, it had been a resounding success.”

He described Trump’s meeting with Prince Charles as “cordial” and added that the two had “hit it off – surprisingly…I think the Prince of Wales, despite differing views on climate change, established an open and easy relationship with the President.”

Despite the negative tone of his remarks about Trump, he advised officials not to write him off. Although “mired in scandal most of his life, Trump could still emerge from the flames, battered but intact, like [Arnold] Schwarzenegger in the final scenes of The Terminator.”

The British FCO issued the following statement about the leaked documents:

The British public would expect our Ambassadors to provide Ministers with an honest, unvarnished assessment of the politics in their country.

Their views are not necessarily the views of Ministers or indeed the government. But we pay them to be candid. Just as the US Ambassador here will send back his reading of Westminster politics and personalities.

Of course we would expect such advice to be handled by Ministers and civil servants in the right way and it’s important that our Ambassadors can offer their advice and for it remain confidential. Our team in Washington have strong relations with the White House and no doubt that these will withstand such mischievous behavior.

Anti-Semite Linda Sarsour is Trying to Appropriate Jesus Again

Westlake Legal Group Sarsour-620x388 Anti-Semite Linda Sarsour is Trying to Appropriate Jesus Again rashida tlaib Palestinians Linda Sarsour judea Israel Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Faux History democrats appropriation antisemitism anti-semite Ahistorical

Noted anti-Semite Linda Sarsour is at it again.

We constantly hear about “cultural appropriation” in liberal circles, that being the idea that it’s unseemly and racist to partake in another culture’s food, dress, and customs. There have been uproars over wearing a sombrero on Cinco De Mayo or a Chinese dress to a prom.

Apparently though, falsely appropriating Jesus is no big deal to the far-left. Here’s Sarsour’s latest ridiculousness.

It’s also true that Native Americans were born in what is now called Louisiana a thousand years ago. People migrate and the names of places change. There is almost no connection between your typical, modern Louisiana resident and the indigenous residents of centuries past. Even to the point where some ancestry could be tracked, one would still never claim that a Native American born in what is now modern day Baton Rouge was actually a white Cajun guy.

After getting push back, she continued ranting.

Bethlehem was not in “Palestine” because, and stick with me, Palestine did not exist (even as a territory) during Jesus’ time. Bethlehem was in the Jewish region of Judea, populated by Jews who’s descendants would eventually be pushed westward (as well as out of the area completely). The Arabic name of the town is also irrelevant because, and stick with me again, Arabic was not even a language at the time. In fact, the Arabs who make up much of the modern Palestinian lineage wouldn’t migrate into the area until many years later.

Perhaps more insulting is the fact that it was via several ancient Muslim invasions that the Arabs who make up the Palestinian people today got to where they are. In some ways, the appropriation of Jesus here echoes the Muslim practice of conquering and then claiming foreign religious sites as their own.

Despite that, we get stupid replies like this.

The term Palestine in the 5th century BC referred to the area inhabited by the Philistines. Modern Palestinians have little to no connection to that people historically. It is not debatable that the Romans called the area Judea and that the area was made up of Jews. Jesus was not Palestinian. Period.

Sarsour’s lack of knowledge of even basic history aside, her claims about Bethlehem in the modern day also fall offensively short. It is not a “predominately beautiful Palestinian community.” It hasn’t been majority Christian for a while because of the violent actions of Islam. Secondly, there is no “military occupation” present. Israel pulled out of the area over a decade ago. Currently the Palestinian Fatah party rules the area with an iron fist and autonomy.

There’s a certain antisemitism to claiming that one of most famous Jews in world history was actually an “Palestinian” just because Arabs would conquer the area later. But Sarsour is no stranger to such things. She’s made a career out of anti-Semitic attacks and a-historical nonsense.

Of course, she’s not the only one. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, another noted anti-Semite, has also made the false claim that “Jesus was Palestinian” before. This came in an anecdotal story about a supposedly aggrieved Palestinian woman, told back in April.

She said her immigrant mother keeps her grounded, and is so compassionate.  She said her mother told a man who voiced opposition to her hijab, “You don’t understand.  Jesus was born in my country!”  Tlaib said her mother believes that if people know that, things will be so much better.

All other issues aside, no, Jesus was not born in this woman’s country. Given that Palestine is not a country and never has been, that would seem obvious. The fact that it didn’t exist, nor was the area populated by the same people in Jesus’ lifetime seems the more relevant piece of evidence though.

Look, it’s one thing to argue over the modern Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I’ve made no secret where my views on that lie. But trying to appropriate Jesus, who had zero connection to modern Arab Palestinians, is a bridge too far and Sarsour is doing it on purpose. It’s anti-Christian, anti-Semitic tripe. She should stick to lying about the IDF and ignoring the human rights abuses of the Palestinian Authority. Jewish and Christian history simply isn’t her thing.

CalTech Seismologist Shoots Down ‘Did Fracking Cause This Earthquake?’ Question

Seismologists with the US Geological Survey and CalTech have been an invaluable resource for both the press and the public in the wake of two major earthquakes near Ridgecrest, California this weekend. They’ve given hours-long press conferences and answered detailed questions about the earthquakes that have already occurred and what Californians can expect in the near future as a result.

Dr. Egill Hauksson, a seismologist at CalTech, held a press conference Saturday in which he was asked by a reporter, “Could fracking in Kern County have anything to do with these earthquakes?”

In his quick reply he seemed to be stifling a chuckle. He said:

“I think that’s — no. I think I can answer that — no. I don’t have to put a qualifier on that.

“There is a geothermal area at the very north end….That’s the coastal geothermal area where there’s a — very large energy production going on where they pump water into the ground to harness heat from the rock. But if they had had something to do with this, we would have expected the activity to maybe start much closer to the geothermal area and then emanate from there.

“But again, the reason we have a geothermal field there is in part due to the active tectonics. It’s due to the ongoing geological deformation. So in that particular area the crust is being thinned and pulled apart so heat can easily rise from the interior of the earth, and we are able to harness that for electricity production.”

It was interesting to hear his scientific explanation as to why – especially that the geothermal field exists because of the active tectonics. With active tectonics one would logically expect some type of seismic activity, whether or not fracking occurs.

Hauksson’s LinkedIn profile states that he is “Project lead for the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN), a joint project of Caltech and USGS,” and that part of his duties in that role include leading efforts to develop instrumentation for “earthquake early warning and hazards mitigation.”

Jeffrey Epstein Reportedly Arrested on Federal Sex Trafficking Charges

The Daily Beast is reporting that Jeffrey Epstein has been arrested and will appear in a New York courtroom on Monday morning, charged with sex trafficking “dozens of minors” between 2002 and 2005.

More than a decade ago Epstein was charged with molesting multiple young girls in Florida and received a “slap on the wrist.” He’s been the subject of numerous civil lawsuits since.

The exclusive report is based on information received from three unnamed law enforcement sources, who told the Daily Beast Epstein was arrested by the FBI-NYPD Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The new indictment—which, according to two sources, will be unsealed Monday in Manhattan federal court—will reportedly allege that Epstein sexually exploited dozens of underage girls in a now-familiar scheme: paying them cash for “massages” and then molesting or sexually abusing them in his Upper East Side mansion or his palatial residence in Palm Beach. Epstein will be charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and one count of conspiracy to engage in sex trafficking of minors—which could put him away for a maximum of 45 years. The case is being handled by the Public Corruption Unit of the Southern District of New York, with assistance from the district’s human-trafficking officials and the FBI.

According to the affidavit Epstein indeed ran a booming sex trafficking enterprise, as many have suspected.

Several employees and associates allegedly recruited the girls for Epstein’s abuse, and some victims eventually became recruiters themselves, according to law enforcement. The girls were as young as 14, and Epstein knew they were underage, according to details of the arrest and indictment shared by two officials.

Epstein’s attorney refused comment Saturday, but David Boies, an attorney for two of Epstein’s victims, said he hopes the feds don’t stop with Epstein.

“It’s been a long time coming—it’s been too long coming. It is an important step towards getting justice for the many victims of Mr. Epstein’s sex trafficking enterprise.

“We hope that prosecutors will not stop with Mr. Epstein because there were many other people who participated with him and made the sex trafficking possible.”

If the feds don’t stop with Epstein, several politicians who were known to gallivant with Epstein will be very nervous.

Florida Democrat Who Has Never Won an Election Declares Trump Supporters to No Longer Be Christians

Westlake Legal Group Jesus-facepalm-620x413 Florida Democrat Who Has Never Won an Election Declares Trump Supporters to No Longer Be Christians Politics pam keith Front Page Stories Florida Featured Story douchebaggery donald trump democrats David French Culture & Faith chriistianity Allow Media Exception
One of the more interesting revelations…and I choose that word carefully…over the past three years has been the assertion by NeverTrump, that a Christian who votes for Trump, no matter the reason, can’t really be a Christian. Though, presumably, a Christian who voted for Hillary Clinton was just fine. This is because that Trump is so uniquely odious as a politician because he let a woman drown to cover his drunk driving of his hair style and mannerisms and, supposedly his serial infidelities (or so the thrice married Charlie Sykes and adulterous Joe Scarborough tell us) that no one’s soul is safe who voted for him. As a Catholic, I’ve never bothered much with this nonsense. My Church has a visible hierarchy, so I know who to listen to, and we have guide for how to exercise one’s right to vote. I’ve found the current Pope to be enough of a challenge without listening to several hundred, if not thousand, self appointed pontiffs that my Protestant brethren are having to contend with. Nowhere in this guide, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States, is your faith and salvation called into question for voting for a guy you don’t particularly find admirable. You are voting on issues, not on people. Yet, I’ve been amused at the unseemly antics of some Protestant clergy, both for and against Trump, and by the propensity of many Protestant NeverTrumpers to declare folks anathema for voting for Trump. Hell, I’ve even witnessed a Pentecostal question a person’s Christian witness because they support Trump. On multiple occasions.

No less a spiritual guru than David French has claimed that the only reason Evangelicals support Trump is out of fear and their witness is hopelessly compromised:

Talk to engaged evangelicals, and fear is all too often a dominant theme of their political life. The church is under siege from a hostile culture. Religious institutions are under legal attack from progressives. The left wants nuns to facilitate access to abortifacients and contraceptives, it wants Christian adoption agencies to compromise their conscience or close, and it even casts into doubt the tax exemptions of religious education institutions if they adhere to traditional Christian sexual ethics.

These issues are legally important, and there are reasons for evangelicals to be concerned. But there is no reason for evangelicals to abandon long-held principles to behave like any other political-interest group.

Instead, the evangelical church is called to be a source of light in a darkening world. It is not given the luxury of fear-based decisionmaking. Indeed, of all the groups in American life who believe they have the least to fear from American politics, Christians should top the list. The faithful should reject fear.

Yet the church is acting as if it needs Trump to protect it. That’s not courageous. It’s repulsive. And so long as this fear continues, expect the church’s witness to degrade further. In seeking protection from its perceived enemies, the church has lost its way.

It’s time for evangelicals to exercise their political veto power. America’s conservative people of faith should seek a primary challenger to Trump and send a message to the GOP that it will not compromise any longer. And it should do so from a position of confidence–and faith.

Personally, I think this kind of an argument is nothing short of grotesque if not downright blasphemous. What French calls fear is actually Christians acting to combat moral evils…something that apparently is just too darn hard for French to do or something that won’t get him invited to the buffet on the lido deck.

What NeverTrump has done with this irreligious nonsense is teach the left that someone, somewhere, takes their theological advice from various internet randos and will possibly decide not to vote for Trump because a person they don’t know and don’t respect has told them that they’ll go straight to Hell if they do.

The latest edition in this nutbaggery is a perennially losing progressive from Florida named Pam Keith. She just puts into one tweet what French takes an entire article to say:

Pro Tip, if you’re going to tell people their salvation is in jeopardy based on their vote, then, to be credible, you need to win an election or two. Otherwise folks may start to wonder just who voted for you.

As I said, beyond losing elections and giving off a creepy vibe I don’t know what qualifies her to make that statement…okay, I do know, and it’s “not a freakin thing”.

Theologically, we know questionable men can end up doing good things. King David, for instance. The Early Church wrestled with this problem under the guise of the Donatist Heresy. Here the idea was that for the Sacraments administered by clergy to be efficacious, then that member of the clergy must lead a faultless life. The problem here is pretty easy to see. The same heretical theological model is being drafted from the 6th Century and made to justify opposition to Trump. Trump is a bad man, ergo, everything Trump does is bad, even if it is good. Ironically, it isn’t like Trump will be running against a particularly good person. The entire Democrat field is composed of moral cripples who endorse abortion and homosexual marriage and offenses against nature like transgenderism. Some, like Pete Buttigieg, lead a personal life that makes Donald Trump’s seem relatively normal and definitely biologically explainable. I’ve never heard a satisfactory explanation for how disapproving of Trump’s personal life is more important that the things he’s done to restrict abortion and create space for public practice of religion. I’ve also never heard a cogent theological explanation for why deliberately putting people hostile to Christianity into positions of power is a moral thing to do. I’ve heard envy, anger, hatred, spite, jealousy and all manner of other reason speak against voting for Trump but I have never read a laugh-free spiritual case for why fetishizing classical liberalism or socialism as a political philosophy is a morally defensible act.

This nonsense is going to last as long as Trump is in office. Maybe longer. It is stupid and it is obscene. People need to stop it. But they won’t. Because…well, you know why. OrangeManBad.

An American Soldier Protests Nike’s Betsy Ross Sneaker Recall in a Very Special Way

As I covered previously, Nike recently recalled a shoe that’d already been sent to stores after former professional football player Colin Kaepernick suggested the Betsy-Ross-flag-adorning footwear could be considered unwokefully racist (here).

So history, ya gotta go.

But one military man is protesting the protest.

Appearing on Fox & Friends, retired marine Johnny “Joey” Jones told the hosts:

“You don’t get to control the narrative on everything that is a symbol to this country.”

“Colin Kaepernick presented this opportunity to me on a silver platter,” he explained.

That “opportunity” was the chance to immortalize the famed Bugs-Bunny-featured flag…on his bicep.

The two men do have one thing in common.

As reported by The Wallstreet Journal:

After images of the shoe were posted online, Mr. Kaepernick, a Nike endorser, reached out to company officials saying that he and others felt the Betsy Ross flag is an offensive symbol because of its connection to an era of slavery.

As indicated above, Joey considers it a symbol, too:

“That flag is absolutely a symbol. It’s a symbol of what people can do in this country. Even in times when they feel oppressed, they can rise above, have a direct impact.”

BOOM!

It wasn’t Joey’s first time on Fox — enjoy the segment below, on why veterans loved candidate Trump. And don’t miss Bugs.

Here’s something you don’t hear every day.

Magic Mike star Matt Bomer is married to a man. And the couple have three sons, the oldest of whom — Kit — is 14.

Amid an appearance on RuPaul’s talk show, the usually-private actor opened up.

And RuPaul — who’s a super nice guy, by the way — asked Matt: What if his kids were to come out to him…as straight?

As it turns out, Kit has indeed done that very thing.

Matt told Ru:

“Our oldest came out to us as straight. He’s 14. He said, ‘I love and respect that you guys are who you are. I’m straight, that’s how I identify.’ And it was a big, nice, sweet moment.”

Ru jokingly replied, “Give him time, Matt. Give him time.”

Matt added that, as for their 11-year-old twins, Henry and Walker, “We would be there with open arms” regardless of their sexual identity.

Matt came out as gay in 2008, though he already had a family at that point.

Times are certainly changing. In days past, straight was considered the default. Now it seems there’s a bit more of an attitude of “either way, just as likely.”

Apropos, MTV’s dating show, Are You the One? recently changed its format to a bisexual free-for-all — see much more here.

Image by ashish choudhary from Pixabay

Just a couple of weeks ago I posted about what seems to be an incipient outburst of fecal incontinence at the CIA dealing with anything that happened to touch the Steele Dossier, that shameful, manufactured collection of fables that was used to develop the pretext for the Mueller investigation and whose major bureaucratic patron was former CIA director, and hopefully felon-in-waiting, John Brennan.

In that post, the CIA’s go-to guy at the Washington Post tries to paint a picture of Joseph Mifsud, the guy who someone dragged hapless George Papadopoulos into the affair and tried to paint him as a conduit between the Trump campaign and Moscow, as someone who any reasonable person could mistake for a Russian agent of influence…so long as no one really bothered to look. Some of my observations:

Here is a picture of Mifsud standing by a member of the UK Joint Intelligence Committee.

Read her bio.

One would note, going back to the comment by Steve Hall, that Smith and Mifsud were both on faculty at University of Stirling at the same time.

Devin Nunes has the best summary:

If Mifsud was a suspected Russian agent, then allowing him the access to the venues where he regularly appeared is a scandal of epic proportions.

The best interpretation of this article is that the CIA knows Mifsud’s exposure as an agent of a Western intelligence agency is going to happen. Then they are going to be left to explain how bogus information fed to Papadopoulos by a friendly intelligence agency was used to bolster the case for a special counsel to investigate a sitting president. There probably isn’t a real good explanation beyond what is here in the article, which is “well, we thought he looked fishy” and hoping that no one notices the very real coincidences that connect Mifsud and friendly intelligence agencies.

And there are these additional angles:

Today, a story by my colleague, Elizabeth Vaughn, on how people who previously refused to cooperate with the investigation of DOJ IG Michael Horowitz were now cooperating and that the main figure was from Department of State.

Speculation is that just as Samuel Johnson observed, “when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully,” when a reluctant witness in an IG probe knows that a prosecutor will force them to testify, it serves to focus his attention on important matters…like not being indicted.

Elizabeth’s post tugged at a story that I was trying to write last week because it was unusual, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on what was unsettling.

If you’ve been in government or in big business you are familiar with upper management deciding their own subordinates are as dumb as a bag of clawhammers (studiously ignoring who promoted and mentored them) and bringing in a consultant that is frequently unfamiliar with your business processes or corporate culture or the history of how some management and staff relationships came to be and letting them “fix” things. Often these consultants are staffed with very smart people but they don’t get paid to listen, they get paid to make changes. Many of these firms seem to have a template approach to solving problems depending upon what the newest fad in business management circles is. Changes imposed from the outside rarely last and only occasionally produce positive results. But they do one useful thing, they provide cover for failing management because the departed consultant’s findings can be blamed by upper management for performance downturns.

The story in question was from Politico (which, when it isn’t going full metal OrangeManBad does decent reporting) headlined: Spies fear a consulting firm helped hobble U.S. intelligence.

These insiders said the efforts have hindered decision-making at key agencies — including the CIA, National Security Agency and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

They said McKinsey helped complicate a well-established linear chain of command, slowing down projects and turnaround time, and applied cookie-cutter solutions to agencies with unique cultures. In the process, numerous employees have become dismayed, saying the efforts have at best been a waste of money and, at worst, made their jobs more difficult. It’s unclear how much McKinsey was paid in that stretch, but according to news reports and people familiar with the effort, the total exceeded $10 million.

In each case, bureaucratic changes that slow response time or hamper intelligence collection capabilities could cause the loss of company secrets, private government data, the democratic process and even American lives. Already, some projects at the NSA have been cut or delayed as a result of disgruntled employees leaving the agency.

“At CIA, they shattered longstanding structural constructs that people had invested their whole careers in,” said Larry Pfeiffer, a 32-year intelligence veteran who now serves as the director of the Michael V. Hayden Center for Intelligence, Policy and International Security at George Mason University. It resulted in “a coordination nightmare” widely considered to be “very heavy-handed,” added Pfeiffer, who left government before the restructuring but remains in close contact with current officials.

Pfeiffer said he doesn’t know “a soul at CIA or NSA who would tell you that the reorganizations have made things better.”

“That’s exactly what happened,” a former CIA operations officer said.

Why, you might ask, would an intelligence agency advertise to the world that a retooling of the intelligence community failed miserably? Wouldn’t that be something you’d keep to yourself? And why, even though Congress was allegedly notified, is this story based on leaks from the CIA rather than Adam Schiff? I understand people being upset at having their world changed but why make this complaint public after the consultant has already pocketed the money and is laying on a beach somewhere sipping fruity drinks with umbrellas and planning their next foray?

My theory is that if you read my earlier post and Elizabeth’s post and this article together, the common thread is Attorney General Bill Barr’s designated cleaner, US Attorney for Connecticut John Durham, mounting a serious investigation to find out just how the f***ity-f*** that the Steele Dossier was shopped about government, briefed to the president, used to justify as many as four FISA warrants on Carter Page, and became the focus of the lynch mob led by Robert Mueller.

You have two things happening.

First, players not actively involved in the whole play engineered, I think, by Brennan, are seeing that it is to their advantage to be not only on the right side of history but the right side of Horowitz and Durham. These people who had refused to cooperate out of some sense of personal loyalty, or loyalty to the Obama legacy, or because they are totally down with the #Resistance are now reluctant to be bankrupted by becoming targets of a federal investigation.

Second, you have the institutions involved cobbling together excuses for why they behaved as they did. In this case the CIA is saying that because a consultant screwed up traditional lines of coordination, that it was easy for Joseph Mifsud to be mistaken as Russian agent of influence and that his long standing ties to Western Intelligence services overlooked because the people familiar with Mifsud were no longer involved. The same reorganization could have prevented warning flags from going off over the Steele Dossier because of staff and organization changes.

Bottom line is, yes it happened but it really isn’t our fault seems to be the line of defense.

The one thing that doesn’t make sense is why Politico, particularly the reporter who is up to her unibrow in pushing the Russia collusion narrative, is now suddenly writing on a subject more appropriate for the audience of GovExec.com.

The Problem With Joe

I’ve always believed President Obama was never really a big fan of Joe Biden. The Democrats and powers-that-have-been saddled him with Biden as a way to add some “gravitas” to the then-young, inexperienced senator’s campaign. I wondered if Obama felt resentment about having to have this “old guard” white man alongside him in order to add legitimacy to his candidacy.

Perhaps that was a part of it, but having seen Biden out on the campaign trail in the past few months it is becoming clear why his former running-mate may not be his biggest fan. Joe Biden may be the consummate politician, but he isn’t very self-aware.

There was a time when the touchy-feely senator’s political skills were very relevant. He has always struck me as the type of man who has stumbled upward his whole life, largely due to his good looks and the type of confident, masculine charm that has been beaten out of the political class by the social justice warrior set these days. Whatever his intellectual bonafides – or lack thereof – Biden was a man of his day and he was smart enough to make a lifetime career out of his toothy smile.

Understandably, Democrat voters were anxious to see Uncle Joe get in the race. In a crowded and bland 2020 field, his lifetime of experience and more notably his resume over the last decade make him their best hope to put a dent in Trump’s relentlessly engaging brand of leadership. In an era when Trump rules the news cycle all day every, a guy like Biden has enough name recognition to at least earn some primetime coverage.

It was perplexing to see Biden biding his time to get in the race, but the more he talks the more obvious it becomes that his team knew what we are only now seeing – the current political era has moved on and Biden has not moved with it.

Trump has ushered American politics into uncharted waters. Biden was built for the fuzziness of traditional American politics – a world where the ability to say nothing while talking nonstop is rewarded above all else. In 2019, an effective candidate needs to be able to match the bluntness of Trump. Biden can’t match that bluntness and he’s too proud (and maybe too experienced) to fake it. While his 2020 colleagues curse and sling insults in a poor facsimile of Trump talk, he is left with an antiquated diplomacy and the stereotypical fear mongering that American voters are growing increasingly numb to.

The other thing that has made Biden such a successful politician is that he’s been limited to fits and bursts of public commentary. He has rarely been handed the public platform for long periods of time with heightened media interest. In soundbites, Biden is a pro. Long-form Biden is significantly less impressive. The longer he has to talk the more obvious it becomes that he has no real ideas and no real opinions.

The pace of the race has changed this election cycle. Biden wasn’t able to get his footing in the opening Democrat debates because he doesn’t have the stomach for new speed. The man has coasted in his job for decades, never having to really fight for time or attention. Now he’s being asked to throw some swings but it’s not clear that he has the reaction time to connect.

The good senator from Delaware didn’t even realize that you aren’t allowed to respect your political opponents as human beings anymore. He’s certainly aware now, but I don’t think he likes it and it shows.

The longer this campaign goes on the more obvious it becomes that the world Joe Biden was first elected to has changed dramatically. It is a world he no longer fits into. Much like he Republican counterpart Jeb Bush, he is a legitimately experienced and skillful politician but also symbol of the old guard – a relic of a time that may not ever return to the political universe.

In a race that boasts several minority candidates, Biden can’t even count on the endorsement of the president he served for eight years. Alongside that unfortunate reality, the legacy of Obama’s administration is fading fast under the bright lights of the Trump era and their record is becoming a burden rather than an asset as more and more details of Obama’s ineptness come to light.

Joe Biden says he’s a fighter, but the longer he talks the more time people have to realize he’s just not up to the task of navigating modern political sensibilities. I’ve never thought of him as a bad guy, just a typical politician. I suspect the former vice president  finds the current political climate distasteful and is having a bit of a tug-of-war with this staff about succumbing to the current environment.

Love him or hate him, Joe Biden has been a fixture on the American political scene for ages. That deserves some sort of recognition, but the era of the “legacy” candidates is over…for now, anyway. Biden is still way ahead for now, but at some point he will not be able to depend on his name recognition to keep propelling him forward. His voting base is too desperate to beat Trump, and they’re paying too close attention to every utterance and syllable of their candidates.

That is turning out to be his biggest problem of all.
