Joe Biden has enjoyed the privilege of consistently being the frontrunner in the vast majority of polling regarding Democratic candidates running for president – even when he wasn’t officially a candidate. But in spite of that, one of the most persistent criticisms of him from the progressive left is that he isn’t “woke” enough.

He found that out the hard way after Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) disingenuously broadsided him at the first debate about his praising working with segregationist Senators back in the 70s in order to get things done, and for his stance at the time on busing. Though he ultimately recovered from her attack, the questions about his “wokeness” have still lingered.

On Thursday, in the midst of the wave of criticisms being directed at Israel from mostly Democrats over the country’s decision to bar BDS proponents Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) entry into their country on security grounds, Biden pounced and seized on the opportunity to win over some of his “woke” skeptics.

Here’s what he tweeted:

Biden left out that something similar also happened under the Obama/Biden administration, where the administration did a little entry barring of their own:

Hot Air‘s Karen Townsend explains in detail:

In that case, the person denied a visa to enter the United States to attend a conference was Michael Ben Ari. The reason given was that, according to the State Department, Ben Ari had ties to a terrorist group. This idea centered around Ben Ari’s conservative views and actions. He follows Kahanism ideology which means he believes that Arabs shouldn’t be living in Israel and shouldn’t have voting rights in Israel. The Kach party has been banned by the Israeli government and the U.S. State Department has labeled it a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Michael Ben Ari’s denial of entry would fall into the same category as Tlaib’s since both were denied due to their political statements. Yet Biden only voiced objection to one and that happened in the course of his Democrat primary campaign. Biden didn’t personally make the decision in 2012, of course, but I am surprised he weighed in as he did, given the dreadful relationship the Obama administration had with Israel and Prime Minister Netanyahu in particular.

Whether Biden either conveniently forgot or really didn’t remember the Ben Ari denial of entry or not, his tweet denouncing Israel’s decision may not be enough for The Squad and their defenders for a couple of reasons:

1) Biden didn’t tweet about the issue fast enough for some on the left (though he posted on the issue around the same time Tlaib did and within an hour of when Omar did):

2) He noted in his tweet that he had always been a staunch supporter of Israel, which is an absolute no-no in the fever swamps of the activist left.

It would seem that matter how hard he tries, Biden just cannot be “woke” enough for the progressive left. Whether or not that ultimately works to his advantage in 2020 as more people begin to tire of The Squad’s obvious political games remains to be seen.

Epstein Rushed $100K Cement Mixer To Island Just Before Damning Expose Published; Was He ‘Literally Covering Up Evidence?’

Westlake Legal Group Screen-Shot-2019-08-13-at-11.35.14-AM-620x349 Epstein Rushed $100K Cement Mixer To Island Just Before Damning Expose Published; Was He ‘Literally Covering Up Evidence?’ Miami Herald's Perversion of justice series Jeffrey Epstein's cement mixer Front Page Stories Featured Story crime Allow Media Exception

According to The Daily Mail, three weeks before the Miami Herald published their November 28, 2018 expose which ultimately led to Jeffrey Epstein’s July arrest, he expedited the delivery of a $100K cement mixer to Little James Island. Epstein paid for the truck up front on November 7, 2018 and sent it with an express bill of lading which is “an unusual and expensive way of shipping an item so that it arrives quickly.”

The Miami Herald’s expose consisted of a series of articles called “Perversion of Justice” which can be read here.

The Daily Mail reported:

Among the other items that Epstein had sent to Little St. James in the US Virgin Islands was a dentist’s chair complete with all the parts.

Epstein also sent a tile and carpet extractor that weighed 191 pounds from the US Virgin Islands to his New York home on March 11 this year.

Four months later he was arrested at Teterboro airport near New York and indicted on sex trafficking charges.

There could be a perfectly reasonable explanation for why Epstein needed an cement mixer on his island. It is said that there are construction projects initiated from time to time on Little James Island as well as the adjacent island which he also owned.

However, the immediacy of this shipment and the timing of the damning expose make it seem suspicious. Epstein’s girlfriend had told an acquaintance that the island was “wired-up.” I wrote about that here. It’s long been “speculated that Epstein had underground tunnels or facilities on his island, while the drone footage reveals what appear to be several hill-side doors.”

A shipping expert told the Daily Mail that Epstein could be “literally covering up evidence.”

Shipping data analyst William George said:

While the purchase of the cement mixer on its own is not suspicious, particularly given the reported and approved repair of cisterns on Little St. James, both the timing of the shipment and the fact that it’s the only item in our records shipped with an express bill of lading do raise concerns.

The shipment arrived Epstein’s island on November 7th of 2018, 21 days before Julie Brown’s expose was published in the Miami Herald and 23 days before Epstein allegedly began to try to pay off witnesses.

Considering both the scope of Brown’s article and the urgency of the shipment, the possibility that the cement mixer was used to literally cover up evidence cannot be discounted.

Drone video footage of the cement mixer taken by YouTube user Rusty Shackleford can be viewed below. It appears buried in a storage warehouse behind some other equipment, however its barrel drum and other distinctive features can be made out. (Via Zerohedge.com)

The RedState Box Office Report – Kids Are More Than All Right

Westlake Legal Group hobbs-shaw2-620x268 The RedState Box Office Report – Kids Are More Than All Right Movies Hollywood Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post Entertainment box office report Allow Media Exception

A bit of a surprise hit as summer winds down.

Hollywood is entering a torpid segment of the release calendar. The post-summer lull is coming upon theaters and this becomes a bit of a dumping ground for the next few weeks as we are likely to see projects studios were unsure what to do with or have given up on entirely.

There was a batch of new titles released this weekend as schools have begun to draw the attention once again of the primary ticket buyers, with only one doing anything approaching impressive business. So here are some of the toss-away titles released on their own recognizance while the studios are busy counting up their haul from the blockbuster season.

1. GOOD BOYS – $20.9 Million
This was a surprise for a number of reasons, the first being it is a straight-forward and R-rated comedy. A ribald tale of preteen youths having a bawdy adventure with girls on the brain this was projected to earn in the neighborhood of $12 million, but it managed to connect with the young male target audience. Critics also helped by giving this an approval of roughly 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. The feeling of a “Superbad”-type romp is valid, given this is from the mind of Seth Rogan. This makes for Universal having its sixth title to open at #1, with only Disney having more.

2. HOBBS & SHAW – $14.14m
The brain-free action epic continues to run on its momentum, dropping only -44% on its way to $130 million to this point. Globally is has already drawn $400 million, and should see Universal easily turning a profit on this extension of the “Fast & The Furious” franchise.

3. LION KING – $11.9m
The King of Hollywood has ruled over the box office for years and this release only helps it spread its kingdom further. This will take its tally stateside to just about $500 million, and globally it will be hitting $1.5 billion soon enough. Just ridiculous type of figures we have not seen in theaters…since about four months ago — but still, damned impressive.

4. ANGRY BIRDS 2 – $10.5m
The previous film was a moderate hit that did really well in foreign markets, so a sequel was inevitable. However after seven years there was little in the way of demand for this follow up, so Sony will be REALLY banking on that international interest to see this one get into profitability. The original was one of the very few video game adaptations to make it to the $100 million mark. This one will be severely challenged to earn one-third of that total, as this franchise appears to be crashing like the buildings in the game itself.

5. SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK – $9.7m
Showing some decent strength for a horror option as it drops -52% in week 2, a not bad figure for the genre. Factor in the top movie was aimed at a similar demographic then this is looking even a little bit better.

6. 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED – $9.0m
2 years ago the original became a small surprise hit for the micro-distributor Entertainment Studios. Made for only $5 million it grossed over $40 million as the shark tale kept drawing interest during an extended run. This time around they more than doubled the budget ($12 million) and got less of a return — the first opened to over $11 million. There is still upside here however as ES already has the costs covered by selling the foreign rights, so there is almost no risk at all..

7. DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD – $10.5m
While it is a respectable hold of nearly -50% that performance is off of a disappointing opening, so it is not really much to cheer about. Paramount needs a long run with solid interest to get this up to a profit line, and that seems to be a tougher search than the titular character is having on screen.

8. ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD – $7.6m
Soon this will move up to become Quentin Taraantino’s second-most successful release, passing “Inglourious Basterds, but will fall well shy of what “Django Unchained” earned.

9. BLINDED BY THE LIGHT – $4.45m
A Sundance FF pick up for Warner Brothers the question here is why did it fail when a very similarly-themed British pop culture ode – “Yesterday” – has been a surprise hit? Actually, that may be the reason. This time a character has his life centered around the music of Bruce Springsteen (rather than the Beatles) and the older art house crowd may have a feeling of “seen that”.

10. THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN – $4.4m
A respectable drop of -45% in week two, but the soft opening means that there is still time needed for this to see a decent enough return for Fox.

As Thomas LaDuke wrote Saturday, liberal comedian/TV talk show host Bill Maher absolutely ripped into Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), their supporters, the media, and the BDS movement Friday night for their phony outrage over Israel announcing last Thursday they were barring the two Congresswomen entry into the country.

For background, here’s a recap of how the segment went down, via Fox News:

“It’s a bulls— purity test, BDS is a bulls— purity test by people who want to appear ‘woke’ but actually slept through history class,” Maher said, drawing loud cheers from the audience. “It’s predicated on this notion … I think it’s very shallow thinking that the Jews in Israel are mostly white and Palestinians are mostly brown, so they must be innocent and correct and the Jews must be wrong. As if the occupation came right out of the blue, that this ‘completely peaceful people’ found themselves occupied. Forget about the intifadas and the suicide bombings and the rockets and how many wars.”

The HBO star quoted BDS movement founder Omar Barghouti, who said, “No Palestinian — rational Palestinian, not a sellout Palestinian — will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

“So that’s where that comes from, this movement. Someone who doesn’t even want a Jewish state at all,” Maher told the panel. “Somehow this side never gets represented in the American media. It’s very odd.”

[…]

“I see why [Omar and Tlaib] don’t get a hero’s welcome,” he added.

Maher continued discussing the BDS issue with the three panelists, which included the Daily Beast‘s Betsy Woodruff, New York Times journalist Carl Hulse and Never Trumper Rick Wilson. Hulse and Wilson are normally not shy about expressing their opinions whether you like it or not, but they showed uncharacteristic restraint for most of this particular segment. Odd.

Watch below:

Tlaib, who loves to warn people who disagree with her to shut-up, demanded a boycott of Maher’s show in response because of course:

“Woke” liberals like Justice Democrats proponent Cenk Uygur are enraged over Maher calling BDS for what it is:

Twitter users read Tlaib the riot act over her lies and her approach to disagreement:

I frequently disagree with Maher. He’s wrong probably 95% of the time. But on the BDS movement, he was spot on. Tlaib can continue to try and shame people on the left and right who dare to expose the poisonous anti-Semitic rhetoric she and Omar use, but that will only make those same people louder.

The New York Times Decides ‘Trump’s Racism’ Is The New Hotness After Russia Collusion Narrative Fails

Westlake Legal Group new-york-times-builiding-620x413 The New York Times Decides ‘Trump’s Racism’ Is The New Hotness After Russia Collusion Narrative Fails Trump racism New York Times media manipulation media collusion Media Front Page Stories Featured Story Abuse of Power

New York Times building by wsifrancis, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0/Original

If you’ve been wondering why the issue of racism is nearly omnipresent these days — the accusation is thrown around so randomly and casually, and usually because of some degree of separation from Donald Trump, that even Jay-Z is getting the treatment for partnering with the NFL. I mean…Jay-Z — Slate has their hands on a leaked audio transcript from The New York Times’ recent “crisis town hall” you might want to see.

It paints a picture of the very scary reality conservatives knew we were living but were forced to discuss in hushed tones to avoid accusations of wearing tinfoil hats to bed: the urban media elites have a very real power to control — to quite literally make up if they want — the national conversation.

In this case, the national conversation is about the pervasiveness of racism. And it’s tearing the country apart. Not that The Times cares much.

The audio transcript describes how the Times’ newsroom, fresh off of failing to sell the Russia collusion narrative (because it never happened), methodically and strategically decided to shift their focus to a new fabrication: Trump’s racism.

The town hall itself was held in response to the upheaval created by the demotion of an editor because he suggested, very inelegantly, certain leaders and legislators may not be of the same mind as the people they claim to represent. The Times also took some grief (from readers apparently) when their White House correspondent broke ranks (which was, frankly, a miracle) and said perhaps doxing campaign donors was a bridge too far. The Times corrected her headline.

Tough times at the Gray Lady when the lockstep groupthink veneer shows cracks. So she did what tribalists at The Times do? Why they decided on a new editorial direction that everyone could (must) agree on. That editorial direction was simple: Donald Trump, and anyone who so much as agrees with him on any policy whatsoever, forever and ever, amen, are officially racists and white supremacists.

[New York Times executive editor Dean] Baquet, in his remarks, seemed to fault the complaining readers, and the world, for their failure to understand the Times and its duties in the era of Trump. “They sometimes want us to pretend that he was not elected president, but he was elected president,” Baquet said. “And our job is to figure out why, and how, and to hold the administration to account. If you’re independent, that’s what you do.”

This is the key piece of the transcript from Baquet’s own remarks (emphasis Legal Insurrection):

Dean Baquet: If we’re really going to be a transparent newsroom that debates these issues among ourselves and not on Twitter, I figured I should talk to the whole newsroom, and hear from the whole newsroom. We had a couple of significant missteps, and I know you’re concerned about them, and I am, too. But there’s something larger at play here. This is a really hard story, newsrooms haven’t confronted one like this since the 1960s. It got trickier after [inaudible] … went from being a story about whether the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia and obstruction of justice to being a more head-on story about the president’s character. We built our newsroom to cover one story, and we did it truly well. Now we have to regroup, and shift resources and emphasis to take on a different story. I’d love your help with that. As Audra Burch said when I talked to her this weekend, this one is a story about what it means to be an American in 2019. It is a story that requires deep investigation into people who peddle hatred, but it is also a story that requires imaginative use of all our muscles to write about race and class in a deeper way than we have in years. In the coming weeks, we’ll be assigning some new people to politics who can offer different ways of looking at the world. We’ll also ask reporters to write more deeply about the country, race, and other divisions. I really want your help in navigating this story.

As Legal Insurrection rightly notes, this is big deal because “it shows the most powerful news organization in the country congratulating itself for setting the anti-Trump narrative on Russia collusion, and seamlessly transitioning to setting a narrative of Trump as racist after collusion flopped.”

Byron York over at The Washington Examiner notes the effort by the Times to inject the specter of race into everything fits into a broader project the publication has undertaken called the 1619 Project . That editorial project literally seeks to inject race into everything by trying to shift people’s perception of the founding of the country from the Revolutionary War era to “understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.”

In order to frame that new editorial direction (and keep their advertisers), making race the issue on everyone’s lips daily — and making the hated GOP president the literal embodiment of it — is crucial for The Times and they know it.

“I’m wondering to what extent you think that the fact of racism and white supremacy being sort of the foundation of this country should play into our reporting,” one staffer asked Baquet. “Just because it feels to me like it should be a starting point, you know? Like these conversations about what is racist, what isn’t racist, I just feel like racism is in everything. It should be considered in our science reporting, in our culture reporting, in our national reporting.”

The staffer’s point brought Baquet back to the paper’s new initiative. “One reason we all signed off on The 1619 Project and made it so ambitious and expansive was to teach our readers to think a little bit more like that,” Baquet said. “Race in the next year … is going to be a huge part of the American story. And I mean, race in terms of not only African Americans and their relationship with Donald Trump, but Latinos and immigration.”

Race is going to be a huge part of the American story because it would appear The New York Times means to sell it by reporting on the race angle in every story they write. There’s a better than decent chance that the people outside The Times’ readership are exhausted by the constant need to point out the things that divide Americans, but The Times doesn’t care.

It’s going to be racism, racism, racism for the foreseeable future. And while that’s more than a little depressing, take heart: at least it’s becoming clearer and clearer how we’re being manipulated.

Sky News Blames “Colonization” for Homosexuality Being Illegal In Muslim Countries

If you want a story that illustrates the stupidity of inter-sectional wokeness, here you go.

Sky News shared this report via their YouTube channel, which mostly focuses on Nigeria. In it, they attempt to make the case that criminalization of homosexuality was a product of colonization by Western powers.

Of course, if you actually watch the video, you quickly learn that all the places where homosexuality is punishable by death are Muslim countries operating under some form of Sharia law. The video even spends about 20 seconds on that fact, mentioning that in Northern Nigeria, Sharia law is what is dictating such inhumane punishments.

Despite that, they keep coming back to the idea that old penal codes from the colonial era are the real problem here. This is ahistorical nonsense.

Yes, colonial powers during that time period, along with just about every other society on earth at the time, did not approve of homosexuality. But to try to pretend that old laws from the 1800s are the reason Muslim countries have the death penalty for homosexuality is ridiculous.

Further, most (if not nearly all) of the African cultures in questions had strong traditions against homosexuality long before the colonial period. There’s a reason that Europe is accepting of homosexuality and Africans generally aren’t, and it’s not because Africans were somehow still bound to laws put in place by the French a hundred years ago. At about the 8 minute mark of the video, they finally show a map of all the countries in Africa where homosexuality is still a crime. The vast majority are Muslim countries.

Look, I’ve got no problem with Sky News or anyone else pointing out that it’s wrong for countries to persecute people for being gay. What I do have a problem with is them peeing on my leg and telling me it’s raining by blaming “colonization” for it. The primary driver of anti-gay laws in Africa, including all laws dictating the death penalty, is the Muslim religion. Period. Why was that not the focus of their report?

The answer is because Muslims are at the top of the inter-sectional pyramid for some reason. It’s that simple.

This is one of those stories that is axiomatic of media coverage of the Trump White House. Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal posted an unsourced story claiming that President Trump wanted to buy Greenland. I say unsourced because “according to people familiar with the discussion” really isn’t a source. Were this CNN, one could safely bet that it was simply fabricated. From there we entered a day of speculation on the subject. Much of it relying upon pig ignorance and a dislike of President Trump.

One of the prime contenders was CNN’s Chris Cillizza. This is from a Vox quality explainer on territorial purchases. In fact, it might very well surpass any of the dumbf***ery that Vox has written over the years.

It didn’t work out well? The 50th state did not work out well?

Since then CNN has corrected the language to read

It was heavily criticized at the time — and has gone down as “Seward’s Folly” in the history books.

Even with the correction it gives an erroneous impression. “Seward’s Folly” has actually become to mean something small-minded people thought was a bad idea but were humiliated with the outcome in a fairly short period of time.

One struggles to see how a mistake like this was even possible. Alaska’s immense wealth in natural resources and strategic location make an immense contribution to the US and have since 1867. One struggles, that is, unless you consider the effects of a highly communicable condition, in this case TDS, which has infected all of CNN’s alleged “talent” and their production workers. President Trump supposedly said something (which is actually a very good idea if it could be pulled off) and the kneejerk reaction by Cillizza or Lemon or Cuomo or [your favorite CNN anchor] is to dismiss it as a bad idea and immediately cobble together some sort of bullsh** narrative to prove the point.

On March 25th, 2017, at a Make America Great Again rally in Orange County, California, all heck broke loose.

About an hour prior to the event, a counter-protestor in a black mask was hit. He subsequently pepper-sprayed a woman. A bunch of people then tackled him. Punches and kicks flew.

Check out the madness (LANGUAGE WARNING):

Fox News characterized the scuffle as “counter-protestors [trying] to block Trump supporters from marching on” Bolsa Chica State Beach.

The extravaganza saw Sacramento’s Jessica Aguilar twice slap a Trump supporter across the face.

Fast-forward to this past Wednesday, when the 23-year-old was found guilty of one count of misdemeanor battery.

As per The Orange County District Attorney’s Office:

Aguilar was immediately sentenced to 20 days in jail, but also 10 days of Caltrans work.

According to Fox, prosecutors noted her community service can vacate the jail sentence.

Three of the melee’s anti-Trumpers were charged with felonies for assault with pepper spray.

The fact that any presidential rally — on either side — could possibly end up in a physical altercation is just ridiculous. No contemporary American group ready to physically fight at a display of ideas has any hope of changing the world with what they have to say. Or, at least, they shouldn’t.

Is Snopes Involved In Research Misconduct Or Is It Simply Incompetent

The front page of a newspaper with the headline “Fake News” which illustrates the current phenomena. Front section of newspaper is on top of loosely stacked remainder of newspaper. All visible text is authored by the photographer. Photographed in a studio setting on a white background with a slight wide angle lens.

Yesterday, my colleague Sarah Rumpf posted on the continuing vendetta that the alleged fact-checking site, Snopes.com, is carrying out against satire site babylonbee.com. Babylon Bee is very open about the fact that they are satire and the tagline for their newsletter is “Fake news you can trust, delivered straight to your inbox.” The newest round of grousing from Snopes is that the satire is “factually inaccurate” (perhaps they missed school on the day when Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal was discussed) and widely shared.

In this story, they make a claim that their monomania is a) necessary and b) supported by research.

Satirical articles like those found on The Babylon Bee frequently showed up in our survey. In fact, stories published by The Bee were among the most shared factually inaccurate content in almost every survey we conducted. On one survey, The Babylon Bee had articles relating to five different falsehoods.

For each claim, we asked people to tell us whether it was true or false and how confident they were in their belief. Then we computed the proportion of Democrats and of Republicans who described these statements as “definitely true.”

If we zero in on The Babylon Bee, a few patterns stand out.

Members of both parties failed to recognize that The Babylon Bee is satire, but Republicans were considerably more likely to do so. Of the 23 falsehoods that came from The Bee, eight were confidently believed by at least 15% of Republican respondents. One of the most widely believed falsehoods was based on a series of made-up quotes attributed to Rep. Ilhan Omar. A satirical article that suggested that Sen. Bernie Sanders had criticized the billionaire who paid off Morehouse College graduates’ student debt was another falsehood that Republicans fell for.

Our surveys also featured nine falsehoods that emerged from The Onion. Here, Democrats were more often fooled, though they weren’t quite as credulous. Nonetheless, almost 1 in 8 Democrats was certain that White House counselor Kellyanne Conway had questioned the value of the rule of law.

Their logic is that because some people believe satire, their is a moral duty on the part of the scolding-douchebag community to label it. And, of course, Republicans are dumb. And they claim to have evaluated the propensity of different political parties to be deceived. Because Republicans are dumb.

This revelation, which appears at the website The Conversation, actually asks a lot more questions than in answers.

It is also notable that two of the professors involved in this research are funded by Facebook. [An aside here. It is a curiosity–and conceit–of the incestuous government-academic world that you are able to remove a conflict of interest by simply declaring a conflict of interest. So you can take money from a major corporation and then set on an advisory board that regulates that corporation and you have no conflict of interest so long you declare it. Fundamentally, I think this is corrupt and the worst sort of Martian logic because ultimately the academic is going to be put in the position of choosing to assist their paymaster or not. There is nothing about academia that gives one hope that it is the province of righteous philosophers who would disadvantage themselves for the sake of the commonweal…rather the opposite.]

Here are some problems with the article:

This is how they describe the methodology:

Our study on misinformation and social media lasted six months. Every two weeks, we identified 10 of the most shared fake political stories on social media, which included satirical stories. Others were fake news reports meant to deliberately mislead readers.

We then asked a representative group of over 800 Americans to tell us if they believed claims based on those trending stories. By the end of the study, we had measured respondents’ beliefs about 120 widely shared falsehoods.

But that obfuscates what really happened:

Indeed, according to the tabular data linked from the tables records a total of 259 responses to a total of 10 questions. This hints that they ran about multiple surveys with minuscule samples. For instance, let’s look at the data from their testing of Onion headlines:

Westlake Legal Group snopes-onion-620x210 Is Snopes Involved In Research Misconduct Or Is It Simply Incompetent Snopes.com Snopes Politics Media Front Page Stories Featured Story douchebaggery democrats Babylon Bee Allow Media Exception

Here the sample size in the GOP cells ranges between 5 and 9. Sorry, but five respondents do not constitute a survey.

Having done sample surveys professionally, my first question is which Institutional Review Board (IRB) okayed this research. Under 45 CFR 46, all research conducted on human subjects needs a research plan that is approved by the IRB of each institution participating, in this cast Ohio State University. This is the basic rule:

    Q. Is my survey project really human subjects research?

    A. Most surveys do meet the federal definition of research. In defining human subjects research activities, two separate determinations must be made. The first determination is whether or not the activity can be considered research. If the answer is “yes,” investigators must follow up with a second determination: Does the research involve human subjects? Both determinations must be made using the definitions of the terms “research” and “human subjects” in 45 CFR 46.102 (a-j):

Research: “a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. Activities which meet this definition constitute research, whether or not they are conducted or supported under a program which is considered research for other purposes.” Investigators unsure of whether an activity constitutes human research should contact their IRB.

Human subjects: “living individual(s) about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains (1) data through intervention or interaction with the individual, or (2) identifiable private information.” Activities in which a researcher collects private, identifiable information about third parties would meet the definition of “human subjects.”
Examples of activities that do not meet these definitions would be (1) ad hoc evaluations of a workshop or symposium (not a systematic investigation), (2) sample surveys on employee satisfaction within one company if the goal is to identify areas for improvement within that company (not designed to contribute to generalizable knowledge) or (3) an analysis of 1880 census records (not information about living individuals). At some institutions, surveys conducted by students for a class project that will not produce a thesis or scholarly publication may be considered to be non-research; check with your institution to learn local practice with regard to student survey projects.

The fact that they are cross-referencing personal information (some means of contact, whether IP address or phone number, with party affiliation) with something personal (you’re too dumb to identify satire even when you are told it is satire) would require than this survey be conducted with university oversight.

Why is this important? Because the research seems horrifically slipshod based on what was shared with the public and an IRB would have had to approve this research plan. There is no way an IRB (again, speaking from my five years as an IRB member) would have approved of the design that we are seeing. Either it is not IRB approved or Snopes is holding back data in advance of publication. That could be the case but it is hard to find a case where a research team is teasing their findings without announcing that the detailed study is scheduled for publication. We simply don’t know, in this case.

A third answer is, of course, that this entire survey is simply bullsh** and either manufactured out of whole cloth or it was carried out with no research plan (or no effective oversight of the execution of the plan) and on a shoestring budget. For instance, in the Excel table I inserted above the small sample size in both GOP and Democrat cells in the matrix strongly implies that these are not 105 individuals but rather no more than 23 people asked on five different occasions.

Note that there is an implication that Ohio State and the National Science Foundation are involved but there is never any flat out statement that that is the case. This kind of caginess is also very unusual in a profession where advertising grant awards is critical to getting more grant awards.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe there are gigabytes of data and a platoon of PhD statisticians powering this survey. Maybe the results are already in press at a refereed, high impact journal (high impact being a very relative term in social science journals) and no one thought fit to mention those facts. But based on what we’ve been shown, the very best that can be hoped for is that this survey is the result of monumental incompetence.

Regardless of how this came to pass, the reason Snopes is after Babylon Bee is easy to see. They are trying to build a case that will justify Facebook (follow the money here) deplatforming that website. That’s been obvious for a while and that is why Babylon Bee is gearing up for a legal battle.

In this photo taken on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, a six-meter high cartoon baby blimp of U.S. President Donald Trump stands inflated during a practice session in Bingfield Park, north London. Trump will get the red carpet treatment on his brief visit to England that begins Thursday: Military bands at a gala dinner, lunch with the prime minister at her country place, then tea with the queen at Windsor Castle before flying off to one of his golf clubs in Scotland. But trip planners may go out of their way to shield Trump from viewing another aspect of the greeting: an oversize balloon depicting the president as an angry baby in a diaper that will be flown from Parliament Square during what are expected to be massive gatherings of protesters opposed to Trump’s presence. When I was a kid, I watched cartoons. I thought all the grownup shows — like the national news — was a bunch of boring, serious stuff.

I had no idea I’d one day discover that much of the adult media — particularly related to politics — was as daffy as anything on Bugs Bunny.

In short, these days, the news is filled with ridiculousness that can’t be taken seriously.

Example: On Friday afternoon, MSNBC eschewed discussion of political principles, debate of economic ideology, and stuff like…adherence to reality…in order to talk up the removal of President Trump due to his aberrant mental state — likely enhanced by Alzheimer’s.

Yes — it was that punishingly dumb.

Host Nicholle Wallace offered the following:

“He attacked a man who turned out to be one of his own supporters. I don’t know where there are many schools in America you can bully somebody like that and not get suspended.”

To what was she referring? According to The Washington Free Beacon, it was this:

[A] supporter…was removed from a Trump rally after the President made fun of his weight. Afterward, the supporter said Trump had nothing to apologize for and that “he’s the best thing that ever happened to this country.

Nicholle continued, bringing into the goofiness a chronic neurodegenerative disease:

“[Trump] repeated points he had already made earlier in the evening as if he did not remember already making them. David Brooks reported in 2017 that a bunch of Republicans came out of a meeting where Donald Trump explained some signs that were similar to the early stages of Alzheimer’s.”

    And:

“[I]n and out of the rooms, people — either disparagingly or affectionately — are saying at an increased clip: He’s crazy.”

An “increased clip”: Have you noticed that it’s always worsening? And not only that, it’s worse than people could’ve imagined.

That’s especially something I don’t understand that rings out from the far Left–

Around the time of the 2016 election, extremists made the most absurd claims — I have to believe — in the history of American politics: If Trump was elected, black people would hang on the White House lawn; American citizens would be rounded up and placed into concentration camps; jackbooted thugs would murder all those in Trump’s way to planetary Dr. Evil-style megalomaniac rule. It was nothing short of mental insanity.

But he won, and nothing happened. Yet, some of those prophets now claim it’s worse than they could’ve ever imagined.

That reminds me of my article, “The 10 Stages Of Genocide: A Social Media Marvel Provides A Window Into America’s Growing Mental Disorder.” Please check it out if you haven’t already.

Back to MSNBC, here’s what panelist and former U.S. attorney Joyce Vance had to say:

“You know, there’s pervasive reporting in this regard and if it was grandpa, you would probably take him to see a neurologist or someone who specializes in geriatric medicine. That hasn’t happened here that we know of. The remedy is the 25th Amendment and that requires an intact cabinet, which Trump does not have. Whether by design or by accident, most of the cabinet is acting. We don’t know what the mix would look like in a vote, and there’s no will to take that on in any event.”

Nicholle was down. And down about it:

“There’s no will to fill a cabinet with the kind of appointees that would have that power. I would posit that there’s not a lot of will to have this conversation, but when it shows up in black and white in the hard copy print of The New York Times it’s impossible for me to ignore it. You’ve now got the White House beat reporters including in their stories about the rally, it says the man repeated himself as though he didn’t know he’d already made those points.”

    Al Sharpton joined in:

“You’re talking about a man yesterday that at one point in his speech was attacking Hillary Clinton, which was two-and-a-half years ago, kept repeating himself, attacks an overweight supporter of his that he didn’t know was there supporting him. We’ve been hearing over and over again he’s losing it, and I think what is driving this even more, Nicolle, is that with the economy appearing to be headed at least downward, if not a recession—what you have in England and other problems in Europe—it drives him even further into whatever cloudy area he is in mentally and he’s becoming desperate because the race card he used the last couple of weeks is not working.”

Hankering for something more serious? Here ya go:
