Gaffe-Machine Joe Biden Made A Big Splash In Seattle This Weekend

Joe Biden just can’t seem to help himself. The former vice president spoke at a Pride weekend fundraiser on Saturday in Seattle. According to the Seattle Times, guests had paid a minimum of $1,000 to dine at the home of public relations executive and gay rights activist Roger Nyhus and to meet the candidate.

Biden told the crowd that, as vice president, he was one of the first Obama administration officials to support same-sex marriage. He spoke about how far the country has come in terms of recognizing the rights of the LGBT community.

According to the Seattle Times, Biden said that “just five years ago, it would have been acceptable for a businessman to make “fun of a gay waiter.””

His remark was not received well by guests who called out, “Not in Seattle!”

It wouldn’t have been acceptable anywhere in the U.S. to make fun of a gay waiter five years ago or even fifteen years ago. In fact, why would anyone make fun of a gay waiter anyway?

Afterward he attended a second fundraiser at the home of former Microsoft President Jon Shirley and his wife Kim where guests had paid $2,800 each to attend. The host presented Biden as “the best candidate to beat Donald Trump,” and said he would restore “honor, dignity, compassion and honesty to the White House.”

The Shirleys are known for their fine art collection and their home is filled with paintings and sculptures. Following Shirley’s warm complimentary introduction, Biden said it was “great to be back in this great museum.”

How to win friends and influence people!

Here we are sixteen months out from the election. Biden has had a rough week. He spoke endearingly of his segregationist former colleagues, and Kamala Harris turned those remarks into a  club and used it to bludgeon him during the debate. Those comments, on top of his flip-flop-flip on the Hyde Amendment, just cost him the support of one of his largest fundraisers, San Francisco based lawyer Tom McInerney. According to FiveThirtyEight’s post-debate poll, Biden’s support dropped 10 points after his poor performance. And he just can’t seem to stop himself from making unforced errors.

When Biden was riding high last December, he said “I am a gaffe machine.” In reference to President Trump, he added, “But my God, what a wonderful thing compared to a guy who can’t tell the truth.”

Or maybe not.

Perhaps Biden was correct when, during the debate he said, “My time is up.”

The RedState Box Office Report — Nobody is Playing Around with New Releases

Westlake Legal Group Duke-Kaboom-620x277 The RedState Box Office Report — Nobody is Playing Around with New Releases Popular Culture Movies Hollywood Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post Entertainment box office report

Images: Disney/Pixar, Warner Brothers/ New Line Pictures

They bring the images, I bring the numbers!

As the summer grinds on the studios are still perplexed. After a string of underperforming anticipated blockbusters this weekend there was a bit of an ebb in the release schedule. After last week’s big release, and the newest “Spider-Man” coming out on Tuesday studios were wise to just get out of the way. Only a couple of genre releases debuted as no outlet wanted to risk a big-money title getting pummeled by established properties.

The monied experts are still trying to even rationalize last week’s supposed underperformance of a surefire hit. The rubbing of temples, the wringing of hands, and the updating of resumes if sure to be happening across Dream Land this summer.

1. TOY STORY 4 – $57.9 Million
Showing a respectable hold as it drops -52% in Week-2. There are still all kinds of mixed emotions over this performance. After coming in well below forecasts the reality was it came in with the best debut in the franchise, and the total so far is slightly over the second week of “TS3”. Some of the negative metrics are comparing it to last summer’s “Incredibles 2”, and noting this number is boosted with the second-largest release window in history. All told there really is little to be upset about, especially considering no other studio seems capable of breaching the $100 million plateau on a given weekend, and this second week performance has been on par with others’ debuts.

2. ANNABELLE 3 – $19.5m
This was a midweek release and has now drawn $30 million to date, but there is still softness when regarded against all the other films in the franchise. While a healthy property it is also possible that New Line/Warner Brothers may have diluted things with too many releases in a short period. While “The Conjuring” films have been fertile they are coming in quickly, with now two spinoff series, and many regarding the recent “The Curse of La Llorona” as included in the mix. Overall a respectable, if not impressive performance.

3. YESTERDAY – $16.4m
A close to impressive performance for this smaller romantic comedy surrounding the music of The Beatles. On a per screen average it bested “Annabelle” (save for the 5-day total) which was done with far less promotional support. Clearly an adult audience with 66% being over-25, which should give this title a bit of staying power. The CinemaScore of “A-” will also help it linger for a spell.

4. ALADDIN – $9.2m
The only film with real staying power this summer (“Endgame” being a quasi-summer release) is only dropping a few hundred screens per week, and still showing strong holds. It only drops -30% here, while losing 600 screens. To date it has crossed over $300 million domestically.

5. THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 – $6.6M
Showing a little bit of resilience, but also helped by the fact that the rest of the field has been showing weakness. It has been out a month but has made just $130 million, compared to the original — that film took just 5 days to reach that same total.

6. MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL – $6.3M
Truly living up to its name. Not only does it star a Brit, an Aussie, and an Irishman, it is also performing better in international markets. After 3 weeks it has not earned over $65 million here, but has doubled its total overseas.

7. AVENGERS: ENDGAME – $5.9m
In what must be seen as a bid to reach the worldwide box office record Disney/Marvel rereleases this smash into 1,000 theaters. In this bid it may end up totaling over $850 million stateside, but the global mark held by “Avatar” is still about $35 million away. It remains in the balance if it has the juice to reach that lofty mark.

8. CHILD’S PLAY – $4.2m
It’s safe to say not many were willing to take this one down off the shelf, as this total shows the returns falling off the table. After a softer than expected debut this plunges -70%, which is steep even for horror titles which are famously first-week players. It will need to be a big performer in the home market if this is expected to become a rejuvenated franchise.

9. ROCKETMAN – $3.4m
Hanging on as expected, by shedding fewer screens than expected. The title iss still showing on 2,000 screens after one month, a decent sign of strength.

10. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3-Parabellum – $2.9m
As noted on my movie podcast this week, this film has a little too much punctuation in the title for a character known for saying very few words.

Prosecutors May Not Pursue Charges Against Alabama Woman Who Started a Fight That Killed Her Unborn Child – Should They?

[Screenshot from CBS Evening News, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H94umvT1Eco]

On Thursday, I covered the very political case of 27-year-old Alabama resident Marshae Jones, who started a fight last December which resulted in her getting shot in the stomach. Subsequently, her 5-months-along unborn child died. Marshae was charged for the baby’s death (here).

That’s quite a different attitude toward the unborn compared to, say, New York, where the citizenry’s been told it’s welcome to murder a baby only seconds before it’s born (here and here).

But now prosecutors are saying they may not go forward with the charges.

In a press release, District Attorney Lynneice Washington’s office announced they’ve not yet decided whether to pursue the manslaughter charge, reduce it, or drop the whole thing:

Foremost, it should be stated that this is a truly tragic case, resulting in the death of an unborn child,” the release stated. “We feel sympathy for the families involved, including Ms. Jones, who lost her unborn child. The fact that this tragedy was 100% avoidable makes this case even more disheartening.”

Plus, as reported by USA Today, there’s a little bit of shaky legal business at work:

[Marshae’s] charge appears to contradict a portion of Alabama’s Criminal Code. Though the code does include “fetal homicide” language, which defines an “unborn child in utero” as a human being, regardless of viability, the code also states that the prosecution of “any woman with respect to her unborn child” should not be permitted under criminal homicide charges like manslaughter.

“It’s the plain language of the statute,” said Andrew Skier, a Montgomery-based criminal defense attorney.

[A]fter reviewing the state code, Skier said he would file a motion to dismiss if he were involved in the case, “based on that statute” alone.

As would be expected, Planned Parenthood isn’t a fan of the case. That was made clear by Staci Fox, President and CEO of PP Southeast:

“The prosecution of Marshae Jones is absolutely reprehensible. It is more proof that Alabama will do everything in its power to criminalize pregnancy — especially for black women.”

Especially??

But there is precedent, in a way. More from USA Today, in this instance echoing what some of you pointed out in response to the initial story:

Though the indictment of a woman for her own pregnancy loss is unusual in Alabama, it is not unusual for prosecutors to charge people with murder even if they never killed anyone. Felony murder doctrine allows for murder prosecutions if someone dies in the course of an felony.

Stay tuned for more. In the meantime, what do you think the district attorney should do? In the last discussion, many of you remarked on the legal aspect. What about the moral one? What would be just?

I look forward to hearing from you all.

-ALEX

First Post Democratic Debate Poll Results Are In, Harris Up, Biden Down

Westlake Legal Group kamala-harris First Post Democratic Debate Poll Results Are In, Harris Up, Biden Down Front Page Stories FiveThirtyEight poll results Featured Story democrats Campaigns Bill Maher Allow Media Exception 2020 Democratic nomination debates 2020 candidates 2020

FiveThirtyEight partnered with Morning Consult to ask likely voters, “Who do you think won?” In order to get an idea of which candidates gained (or lost) support as a result of their debate performances, they asked likely voters who they would vote for before and after each debate. This enabled them to determine where that support came from (or went to). Their results provide a snapshot of where the candidates stood going into the first debate, their position the next morning and where they finished the morning after the second debate.

The results showed that Kamala Harris was the biggest winner from the first round of debates. Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro saw modest increases in support. Bernie Sanders and Cory Booker performed somewhat well in their debates, although they did not receive significant increases in support.

Joe Biden was the biggest loser.

Here are some of the significant changes by candidate:

Kamala Harris: Gain: 8.7%

Before first debate: 7.9%

After first debate: 6.3%

After second debate: 16.6%

Change in Favorability: +10.7%

Change in Unfavorability: +1.5%

According to FiveThirtyEight statistics, the increase in Harris’ support came from Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren.

Elizabeth Warren: Gain: 1.8%

Before first debate: 12.6%

After first debate: 18%

After second debate: 14.4%

Change in Favorability: +1%

Change in Unfavorability: -1%

Bernie Sanders: Gain 2.9%

Before first debate: 14.4%

After first debate: 16.4%

After second debate: 17.3%

Change in Favorability: +2%

Change in Unfavorability: -0.1%

Julian Castro: Gain 1%

Before first debate: 0.7%

After first debate: 2.1%

After second debate: 1.7%

Change in Favorability: +18.5%

Change in Unfavorability: +2.4%

Joe Biden: Loss: 10%

Before first debate: 41.5%

After first debate: 35.4%

After second debate: 31.5%

Change in Favorability: -1%

Change in Unfavorability: +3%

Pete Buttigieg: Loss: 1.9%

Before first debate: 6.7%

After first debate: 4.4%

After second debate: 4.8%

Change in Favorability: +9.4%

Change in Unfavorability: +3.8%

Corey Booker: Loss: 0.2%

Before first debate: 3%

After first debate: 3.9%

After second debate: 2.8%

Change in Favorability: +9.9%

Change in Unfavorability: +1.9%

Beto O’Rourke: Loss: 1.4%

Before first debate: 3.6%

After first debate: 2.8%

After second debate: 2.2%

Change in Favorability: +2.4%

Change in Unfavorability: +6.7%

Many of the lesser known candidates saw an 8-10% increase in their favorability ratings. I would include Corey Booker, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Kirsten Gillibrand, Eric Swalwell, Bill deBlasio, Tim Ryan, Tulsi Gabbard, Jay Inslee, John Delaney, Andrew Yang, John Hickenlooper, Michael Bennet and Marianne Williamson.

Julian Castro increased his favorability by a whopping 18.5%.

Marianne Williamson increased her unfavorability by 16.6%. Next was Andrew Yang by 11%. Eric Swalwell and Michael Bennet each increased their unfavorability by 10.2%, John Hickenlooper by 9.8%, John Delaney by 8.6% and others by lesser amounts.

I agree with comedian and talk show host Bill Maher’s assessment that half of the field should bow out at this point. This would include former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, former Maryland Rep. John Delaney, Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan, New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, California Rep. Eric Swalwell, spiritual guru Marianne Williamson, tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. My colleague, Alex Parker, posted about this last night here.

I would include Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) in that list, and probably Maher would too, but she happened to be a guest on his program when he was discussing the list.

Take That Dennis Rodman, Trump Meets Kim In The DMZ

Westlake Legal Group ap-north-korean-tank-commander-300x194 Take That Dennis Rodman, Trump Meets Kim In The DMZ Front Page Stories Featured Story Allow Media Exception 2019

In just a blink of an eye, the 45th President of the United States became the most famous American to ever step foot in North Korea and topple Dennis Rodman for that honor.

Who would have thunk it?

In the clearest example of the new phrase “Twitter Diplomacy” ever coming to fruition Donald Trump met North Korean dictator Kim Jung-un at the DMZ earlier today and actually crossed over into North Korea to become the first U.S. President to ever do so.

According to Fox News

Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to step foot inside the Hermit Kingdom.

“I was proud to step over the line,” Trump told Kim later, inside the Freedom House on the South Korea side, according to the Associated Press. “It is a great day for the world.”

Kim appeared pleased by the meeting, the report said.

“I believe this is an expression of his willingness to eliminate all the unfortunate past and open a new future,” Kim said of Trump, according to the AP. He added that he was “surprised” when Trump extended the invitation on Saturday.

The North Koreans have so far shown that they are still playing the game that they used in the 90’s when they shook the United States for hundreds of millions of dollars giving promises they never kept. Trump so far has not played that game with money but has allowed Kim to benefit with these photo ops.

How long this can continue with no real strategic breakthrough in negotiations? If it were up to me it would be now. Now with this third meeting if the North does not play ball there is simply no reason for another meeting or invite to the White House. They have not done anything to warrant it. Allow Mike Pompeo to do what he does well and get a deal in place that can be enforced before even another phone call is exchanged between the two leaders.

Even Trumps detractors will have to concede that he knows how to maximize a public relations opportunity and this one event will probably get a whole wing at the future Donald Trump Presidential Library.

Look for Dennis Rodman spending a lot of time there shaking his head wondering how he in a blink of an eye no longer was the most famous American to visit the North.

So. Sad.

NY Times Op-Ed Recommends CBP Agents Be Publicly Shamed, But Claims ‘This Is Not Doxxing’

Westlake Legal Group Border_Agency_Journalist_Surveillance_40930-620x431 NY Times Op-Ed Recommends CBP Agents Be Publicly Shamed, But Claims ‘This Is Not Doxxing’ progressives Liberal Elitism Hypocrisy of New York TImes Front Page Stories Featured Story donald trump democrats Culture Conspiracy to destroy President Trump CBP agents doxxing Barack Obama Allow Media Exception 2020

New York Times author Kate Cronin-Furman, an assistant professor of human rights, wrote an op-ed on Saturday entitled “The Treatment of Migrants Likely ‘Meets the Definition of a Mass Atrocity’.” Her lede? “Children are suffering and dying. The fastest way to stop it is to make sure those responsible, including the foot soldiers, face consequences.” Cronin-Furman emphasizes that   “this is not an argument for doxxing.”

She sure could have fooled us. She writes:

The identities of the individual Customs and Border Protection agents who are physically separating children from their families and staffing the detention centers are not undiscoverable. Immigration lawyers have agent names; journalists reporting at the border have names, photos and even videos. These agents’ actions should be publicized, particularly in their home communities.

This is not an argument for doxxing — it’s about exposure of their participation in atrocities to audiences whose opinion they care about. The knowledge, for instance, that when you go to church on Sunday, your entire congregation will have seen you on TV ripping a child out of her father’s arms is a serious social cost to bear. The desire to avoid this kind of social shame may be enough to persuade some agents to quit and may hinder the recruitment of replacements. For those who won’t (or can’t) quit, it may induce them to treat the vulnerable individuals under their control more humanely. In Denmark during World War II, for instance, strong social pressure, including from the churches, contributed to the refusal of the country to comply with Nazi orders to deport its Jewish citizens.

The writer cites a pediatrician who traveled to a center and compared it to a “torture facility.” Cronin-Furman agrees with him. She ought to know, she explains, since she has studied mass atrocities for over a decade. The op-ed continues:

If, as appears to be the case, these harsh conditions have been intentionally inflicted on children as part a broader plan to deter others from migrating, then it meets the definition of a mass atrocity: a deliberate, systematic attack on civilians. And like past atrocities, it is being committed by a complex organizational structure made up of people at all different levels of involvement.

Thinking of what’s happening in this way gives us a repertoire of tools with which to fight the abuses, beyond the usual exhortations to call our representatives and donate to border charities.

Those of us who want to stop what’s happening need to think about all the different individuals playing a role in the systematic mistreatment of migrant children and how we can get them to stop participating.

She suggests a variety of remedies. “For someone who is “just following orders,” the prospect of being internationally shamed as a rights abuser and being unable to travel freely may be significant enough to persuade them to stop participating.”

Cronin-Furman doesn’t ask for the addresses of agents be revealed, only that they be publicly shamed. Sounds an awful lot like  doxxing to me.

Instead of employees trying to cope with the throngs of migrants who are trying to enter the U.S. illegally and have been told over and over again that they won’t be allowed in, she claims they are “arguably directly responsible for torture.”

She knows that the same laws were in effect and the same facilities were in operation during the Obama administration. In a 2014 interview with ABC, Obama said, “Do not send your children to the border…if they make it, they will be sent back.”

Obama also said, “Undocumented workers broke our immigration laws, and I believe that they must be held accountable…U.S. border personnel will stem the flow of illegal crossings and speed the return of those who do cross over.”

CBP employees are not trying to inflict torture on children or anyone else. They are trying their best to manage the continuous throngs of migrants who are trying to enter the U.S. illegally. Cronin-Furman’s op-ed is sheer propaganda. She is exploiting the current humanitarian crisis at our southern border for political purposes.

Many Twitter users found Cronin-Furman’s  op-ed to be a bit over the top. Here are a few of their reactions, most of which cite either the op-ed itself or Allapundit’s post (Hotair.com) about it. (Via Twitchy)

From Allapundit: “Hooooo boy.”

From Stephen Miller: “This is not an argument for doxxing” they wrote right after making an argument for doxxing.”

Others:

“This is not an argument for doxxing” they write as they argue for doxxing Border Patrol agents.”

“They are the same agents, doing the same work, under the same policies & in the same facilities as they did under Barack Obama. So this had zero to do with what they do. It has everything to do with who is President.”

“The names of agents Obama had putting kids in cages were never fair game. Or his people that were drone striking weddings. Or Hillary’s staffers that turned Honduras into a warzone kicking off the migrant crisis.
Wanna know why? Because journos are all Dem operatives now.”

“New York Times publishes oped calling for the harassment and doxing of everyone involved in immigration enforcement.”

“(This is absolutely an argument for doxxing)”

“Holy shit. There is only one reason to do this, to expose these agents to abuse and potential violence. The New York Times is run by some seriously sick people.”

“Reminder that the left wants normal people defending the country destroyed.”

“Doxxing law enforcement to own the cons. What could go wrong?”

“So the New York Times supports doxxing. Good to know.”

“Now imagine the NYT saying this about abortionists and clinic workers and all who work for Planned Parenthood. Even given the horror of abortion, we pro lifers have never considered this. This is the left now. Be prepared.”

“The NYT just keeps making Trump’s argument for him.”

Next up from the NY Times opinion page: “Should We Call Detention Centers Concentration Camps?”

Journalist Andy Ngo Violently Attacked By Antifa Today, Mainstream Media Silent

Westlake Legal Group Untitled-1-1-620x396 Journalist Andy Ngo Violently Attacked By Antifa Today, Mainstream Media Silent Portland Politics Oregon MSNBC Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story cowardice CNN Brian Stelter Attacked Assaulted antifa Andy Ngo

Andy Ngo is a freelance journalist who spends most of his time covering the Antifa movement. He’s been able to document a lot of their insanity, as well as violence, specifically in the Portland, OR area where Antifa has a massive following. The mayor of Portland has essentially ceded his streets to the masked contingent, refusing to allow police to keep the peace or even respond immediately when assaults happen.

Ngo is a throwback to when the term journalist actually meant something. He’s not getting paid a cush salary to write preening, biased articles at a major newspaper. He’s out on the front lines reporting on matters that the mainstream media are too cowardly to cover.

Unfortunately, Ngo was assaulted today by the jack-booted, mask wearing thugs of Antifa and the results aren’t pretty.

Here’s an actual video of some of the attack.

And another video showing the aftermath.

Ngo would eventually be taken the hospital. He’s currently in the ER and has a few updates on his Twitter if you follow the links above.

This kind of behavior is absolutely disgusting. It’s also disturbing how much of a pass Antifa continues to get just because they espouse radical left-wing ideals. The media won’t report on them, MSNBC makes excuses for them, and Chris Cuomo compares them to soldiers on D-Day fighting Nazis. In reality, they are fascistic cowards who block streets, riot, assault people, and generally cause mayhem whenever they meet.

There is no reason these clowns should be allowed to shut down areas of town, prance around in masks, and beat people. Yet, the authorities won’t do anything because the Democrat leadership has handcuffed their ability to respond.

Meanwhile, the responses on some of the tweets above are just gross. Liberals celebrating his assault and accusing him of being a bigot who deserved it. For the record, Ngo is Asian and gay. He’s never done anything bigoted and is simply trying to cover a story worth covering.

Lastly, where the heck is the media? Those firefighting truth tellers who ensure us that the safety of journalists is a top priority? CNN hasn’t reported on this. Neither has MNSBC or any of the networks. If a left-wing journalist was attacked a Trump rally, it’d be front page news immediately and for weeks after. Ngo’s assault probably won’t even register though.

We did get this weak response from Brian Stelter though.

What a garbage statement. Stelter calls Ngo a “messenger” instead of a journalist and he doesn’t even have the guts to call Antifa out as the responsible party. There’s a word for that tweet and it’s cowardice.

We are headed toward a dark place in this country if this doesn’t stop. The Democrat party embraces these violent radicals and eggs them on. The media either ignore them or prop them up. Eventually, one of these clowns is going to milkshake and assault the wrong person and they are going to end up shot in return. Then what? Things are going to escalate to a point of no return soon.

A pastor and his church are in hot water over permitting gay marriage.

Leaders of the Evangelical Covenant Church have defrocked Rev. Dan Collison and suspended his First Covenant Church. The decision was made via a 77% majority at the ECC’s annual conference in Omaha Friday night.

Downtown Minneapolis’s First Covenant is a founding member of the denomination, which was begun over 130 years ago. Until the 70’s it was one of the ECC’s largest members.

Dan took over in 2009.

And he’s saddened by the organizational dis, but at the same time, he’s cool with it:

“I feel grounded in the path we have chosen. I feel grateful for the pastors and churches who stood up for us. I feel compassion to those caught in the middle.”

So what caused the big hullabaloo?

In 2014, a member of the First Covenant staff presided over a wedding between two chicks. Both lovely ladies were in the church worship band.

FC also released a “love all” statement, welcoming LGBTQ congregants.

The house of worship offers pastoral care — which covers close encounters of the nuptials kind — “to all in our congregation without regard for ability, race, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.”

Yeah — that definitely seems pretty pro-gay.

At the Friday meeting, leaders nominated Dan for defrocking because he opposed the ECC tenet of “celibacy in singleness and faithfulness in heterosexual marriage.”

ECC Executive Minister Michelle Sanchez lamented the emotional and complex elements of the suspension:

“The ECC is mindful of the complexity, the sensitivity and the pain that matters of human sexuality can bring. We talk about the desire for both freedom and responsibility as a denomination. Those two things were coming into tension in this case.”

President John Wenrich said he hopes “this historic church someday changes its mind and then returns to our family.”

Meanwhile, First Covenant’ll continue its operations as an independent church.

President Trump: A Border Wall Would’ve Kept a Father & His Infant Daughter from Drowning in the Rio Grande

On Saturday, at the G20 in Osaka, Japan, Donald Trump claimed that a border wall would’ve saved the lives of a father and young daughter who tragically drowned while trying to enter the U.S. illegally.

As reported by CNN, Trump insisted that illegal immigration isn’t fair to those who come into the country via its immigration system:

“You have millions of people on line for years to get into a country. They take tests, they study…and these people have worked hard, they’ve been on line for seven, eight, nine years, then someone walks in. Honestly, it’s very unfair.”

But if there were a wall built, the President contended, a man and his little girl would never have succumbed to the waters of the Rio Grande:

“The father and the beautiful daughter who drowned…if they thought it was hard to get in, they wouldn’t be coming up …. Lives would be saved.”

23-month-old Valeria Ramírez lost her life, as did her dad, Óscar, 25.

The photo of the two lying facedown on a bank came to national attention courtesy of Julia Le Duc, a journalist who claims the two first attempted legal entry but were denied asylum.

The duo initially crossed the waterway safely.

From The Daily Caller:

The 25-year-old father first swam with his daughter across the river into Brownsville. However, when he went back for his [23-year-old wife, Tania], the young girl leaped into the river after her dad. [Oscar] swam back to grab her, but both ended up getting caught in the river’s currents.

Whether or not a wall would’ve saved a father and his little girl, we clearly have a problem at the border. And Rosa Ramírez — Oscar’s mother — doesn’t want to see anyone else dying amid the crisis.

As for crossing the river, she told the BBC:

“Don’t try this. I know that in this country, everything is very difficult, but our lives are more valuable.”

In Response to the Debates, Bill Maher Makes His List of 10 Democratic Candidates Who Should Quit Immediately

After the first Democratic debate this week, Bill Maher had a piece of advice for 10 Oval Office hopefuls: Stop running for president.

Here’s what the HBO host told his show’s panel Friday night:

Look, there’s too many people in this race. So we saw them last night and the night before. I’ll give you veto rights, but I’m going to get rid of 10 of them right now. Is that okay? And if you disagree, just say.

Unsurprisingly, Bill doesn’t have any faith in the underdogs. Amid F words, he showed a photo of each candidate:

This guy, Hickenlooper. Nice guy. No, get out. Nice guy. Get the f*** out

This is Michael Bennett. You know if you Google Michael Bennett, the first five that come up aren’t even this guy. Get the f*** out.

Oh, vice principal Delaney. Nice guy. Nothing here. Get out.

Tim Ryan. I think he said one good thing. No.

Kirsten Gillbrand. Al Franken says “Hello.”

Eric Swallwell. I like him. But you know, too young, it looked like he was wearing a toupe last night. Get the f*** out.

He 86’d Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang…

So what of Beto “Anti-Privileged Millionaire Privileged Millionaire” O’Rourke (here)?

MSNBC host Joy Reid intervened, “Not youth pastor Beto. He reminds me of my daughter’s youth pastor. So, I feel badly.”

Maher quipped,”Here, you can keep the picture. But he’s not looking good.”

How ’bout New York Mayor Bill deBlasio, who wants to confiscate people’s money and decide who to give it to instead (here)?

Bill dropped the hammer:

“And this guy, start spreading the news. You’re leaving.”

So there you have it — Bill’s List of Losers.

What are yours? Who do you think will make it to the finals? Which Democrats look most likely to become the official nominee?

Let us all know in the Comments section.
