Headed into the weekend, an Iran strike was at the forefront of the news.

Following the Middle Eastern country’s destruction of a U.S. drone over the Strait of Hormuz Thursday — and amid an already-tense relationship (here and here) — President Trump had noted the U.S. was “cocked and loaded” (here).

The Commander-in-Chief tweeted that he’d stopped a retaliatory strike “10 minutes before,” due to the fact that it would’ve cost 150 lives:

But Friday, Nancy Pelosi emphasized the President has no ability to order a strike at all without congressional approval.

Pelosi said any attack on Iran “must not be initiated” otherwise.

Speaking with reporters after a meeting with White House officials, she made clear she was unaware of any precise military plan:

“We left with the idea that the President was going to consider some options. I did not receive any heads-up that there was a strike that was in the works. … Maybe the other leaders did on the Republican side, but I did not receive any of that.”

As reported by The Hill, during a Situation Room meeting Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told the President he had no power to physically hit back at Iran outside of Congress.

Elizabethe Warren posted the same:

In addition to her comments to the media, Pelosi released the following statement Friday:

We are in an extremely dangerous and sensitive situation with Iran.  We must calibrate a response that de-escalates and advances American interests, and we must be clear as to what those interests are.

“During our meeting with the President at the White House, Congressional Leaders stressed the necessity that we work with our allies and not strengthen the hand of Iran’s hardliners.

“Democratic Leaders emphasized that hostilities must not be initiated without the approval of Congress.

“We have no illusions about the dangerous conduct of the Iranian regime.  This is a dangerous, high-tension situation that requires a strong, smart and strategic approach.”

So what’s the reality? Here’s The Daily Caller:

Although [1973’s War Powers Act] requires the President to consult with Congress “in every possible instance” before deploying troops into war, it grants the Commander-in-Chief 48 hours before telling Congress that the United State military has been sent “into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances.”

For an easy view of politics at work, one may compare the three Democrats’ claims to top Dems’ castigation of George W. Bush’s Iraq War — which they continually blamed on him after the fact, even though many of them voted for it. Now they’re saying nothing happens without their approval; back then, they were distancing themselves from a congressionally-declared war like it was going out of style.

For the moment, The Donald intends “major sanctions” against Iran beginning Monday (here). But military aggression is “always on the table until we get this solved. We have a tremendously powerful military force in that area.”

Leak From DHS Acting Secretary May Have Been Why Trump Canceled ICE Raid

Westlake Legal Group immigration-raids-california-e1520906734838-620x436 Leak From DHS Acting Secretary May Have Been Why Trump Canceled ICE Raid Kevin McAleenan immigration ICE Raids Ice Front Page Stories Featured Story DHS

After Donald Trump tweeted Monday that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was set to begin rounding up illegal immigrants who were given deportation orders but had defied them and stayed in the country, The Washington Post ran a piece Friday that unveiled many of the details of the plan, apparently to the chagrin of the White House. That leak is now thought to have come from acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, who had vocally disapproved of the plan and sought to “sabotage” it, according to the Washington Examiner.

In a move he said was to placate Democrats, President Trump announced on Saturday that the nationwide immigration enforcement operation planned to start Sunday — aimed at migrant families who illegally remain in the country despite being denied asylum — was called off to give lawmakers two weeks to work on a plan to fix legal “loopholes” he said have enticed migrants to come to the U.S.

However, all five officials who spoke with the Washington Examiner confirmed McAleenan’s decision to go rogue and stymie the operation was what prompted the White House to call off the 10-city operation.

I wrote about the media reaction to Trump’s Monday tweet, which was almost unanimous in its condemnation of the plan as one that was going to be logistically difficult to carry out. However, most of the early news reports were thin on the details.  By Friday, The Post seemed to have all the details of how the raid would work and mentioned McAleenan as an official who had reservations about the plan.

The “family op,” as it is referred to at ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, is slated to target up to 2,000 families in as many as 10 U.S. cities, including Houston, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles and other major immigration destinations, said the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the law enforcement operation.

McAleenan has warned that an indiscriminate operation to arrest migrants in their homes and at work sites risks separating children from their parents in cases where the children are at day care, summer camp or friend’s houses. He also has maintained that ICE should not devote major resources to carrying out a mass interior sweep while telling lawmakers it needs emergency funding to address the crisis at the U.S. border.

The Examiner interviewed several current and former Trump administration officials and they all agree that McAleenan had  been fighting ICE Director Mark Morgan and other administration officials within and without the White House to scale back the operation. They believe the details in the Post report couldn’t have come from anyone else.

“I know he has not approved of this operation for months,” one person familiar with those private conversations said during a phone call Saturday night. “The president wouldn’t leak that. ICE wouldn’t leak that. There’s only a few people involved in these discussions … The only one who could have shared the details of those operations were Kevin.”

“That’s our belief,” a second official said when asked if McAleenan was behind the leak. “The secretary was not supportive from day one.”

The first official said McAleenan may have leaked it so that he could “be the martyr” in the face of anticipated blowback in the future.

A third official claimed McAleenan “cares more about what liberals and ‘Never Trumpers’ in Congress and the media think of him the achieving the express mission of his department.”

Trump ultimately called off Sunday’s raid with many outlets reporting that decision was primarily an attempt to give Democrats a chance to work with Republicans in Congress to reach a legislative solution to the immigration crisis.

However, it would appear the raid was also in jeopardy because one high-ranking official in the administration itself chose to use the media to fight his battle when he couldn’t convince his colleagues to listen to him.

Elizabeth Warren has made a campaign of promising nearly every identity group in existence some form of monetary handout. Whether it’s race, age, or socioeconomic background, she’s got something for you. From reparations for the descendants of slaves to paying off student loans of millennials.

The media have taken this as a sign of just how serious of a candidate she is. You see, she has “plans” and that’s what really matters here. The fact that her plans are mostly nonsensical, not possible, and sometimes even harmful don’t play into the equation.

Well, Warren isn’t done yet. She’s got a new string she’s pulling on.

Gay reparations.

And it wasn’t until last year that the standard deduction was doubled, allowing me to keep more of my money. Does the government owe me reparations for their unfair tax practices before that?

Tax laws change. Certain groups who didn’t get benefits end up getting benefits down the road. Others may have them taken away. In the case of gay marriage, the country decided that the traditional definition of such and it’s purpose under tax law no longer applied.

Ok, I’m not here to relitigate that, but that’s hardly a case for paying gay people who weren’t married at the time tax refunds based on the idea that they otherwise would have been married. How do you prove that? Can any two gay people just claim they were a couple pre-gay marriage to get some of the $50M we supposedly owe them?

This is the problem with reparations of any kind. They sound good emotionally to certain political persuasions, but they are completely impractical. Warren’s claim in that tweet is unworkable on so many levels that it’s not even worth discussing.

But instead of calling her out for shameless pandering, we are told by the media at large that she’s a genius with so many ambitious “ideas.” No one has even bothered, though, to ask Warren how she’s going to pay for all these giveaways and you can bet MSNBC won’t at the first debate.

Politics isn’t kindergarten. You don’t get praise simply for smearing paint on enough sheets of paper. If someone has lots of ideas but they are bad ideas, then they deserve to be treated as such.

Sick of the City’s Escalating Homeless Crisis, LA Residents Launch an Effort To Recall Mayor Eric Garcetti

[Screenshot from Vice News, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YrQ-YxG7Po]

Some people don’t like Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti — or, as one critic called him, Mayor Garsh***y.

And one reason some folks are less than ecstatic fans is the city’s massive and expanding homeless problem.

Last week, CNN reported:

As Los Angeles city and county officials struggle to shelter and build housing for nearly 60,000 people who are living on the streets, they are facing resistance — not just to new structures in neighborhoods where residents fear more crime and blight, but also from some within the homeless community, who insist they would rather continue living independently on the streets in their tents.

For LA resident Alexandra Datig, it’s time to trade Eric in for a new model. Hence her recall effort, which she discussed with City News Service:

“The homeless situation is in a state of emergency, and everything that we’ve done has not worked. At this point, I think we need an intervention, and we need to recall this mayor.”

Alexandra’s created the site www.recallthelamayor.com, which provides a ton of info about the issue as well as her reasons why Eric should be removed.

“He can’t handle the crisis,” she explained to the Los Angeles Times. “He needs to step down.”

On Wednesday, the activist appeared on Tucker Carlson to outline the situation (see the video below):

“I think we are living in third world conditions that are a threat to public health here in Los Angeles, and we have a mayor who is completely ignorant of that and he is an abysmal failure. … We have this position in the city of Los Angeles where our leaders seem to think that it’s okay to leave people on the street to die, just whistling past the graveyard. We have had over 3600 people dying on the streets of Los Angeles in the past five years.”

As for her Third World claim, Tucker recently welcomed historian Victor Davis Hanson, who claimed the entire state has reached Third World status (here).

Alexandra told Tucker she doesn’t wanna take any more crap (like here):

“The Los Angeles Times reported there is a $57 million a year program just to get toilets on the streets. We are dealing with environmental crimes — the type that are illegal in the state of California. You can’t allow fecal matter to go down the storm drains. It’s been happening for the past six years. It’s illegal to do that. We need to have people committed to state hospitals under conservatorship and people need to be taken off the streets. We need health screenings — these people are dying in our streets, they are vulnerable to diseases because of their immune systems…there is no prevention, no treatment. There is no interdiction. There is no incarceration.”

She’s filing a notice of intention with the city clerk. If approved, it’ll require over 300,000 signatures of registered city voters. Alexandra also started a Change.org petition; as of Tuesday afternoon, it had 8,000 signatures.

And now I’ll do something I virtually never do: I’ll share a personal anecdote. “How bad is the homeless situation?” you might ask.

One night while driving downtown, I turned onto a side street to nowhere and everything went dark. I guess the streetlights were out. But there was a giant crowd — what looked like maybe 1000 zombies all up and down the road, some walking and hanging out in the road. It was if they’d claimed the street as their village. And about 50 yards ahead, there lay something on my side of the two-lane street. Something that literally took up the entirety of my lane. I couldn’t quite make it out, but it looked like a tarp. As I came up slowly, I began to see that it was a bunch of blankets piled on top of one another. I creeped up to it. And there in the center of the blankets — in the center of the lane — was a woman sleeping.

She was just in bed for the night. A bed she’d made in the middle of the lane.

That’s how bad.

Alexandra Datig thinks she knows how to make it better. I hope she — or someone else who will come along with a different idea — is right.

The Democrats’ Newest Weapon, Accusations of Sexual Assault, Hurts Those The Party Claims To Support The Most

Westlake Legal Group METOO-620x325 The Democrats’ Newest Weapon, Accusations of Sexual Assault, Hurts Those The Party Claims To Support The Most Sexual Assault President Trump Front Page Stories Featured Story E. Jean Carroll donald trump democrats Culture Allow Media Exception 2020 #metoo

No two ways about it. The kickoff rally to President Trump’s reelection campaign was a smashing success. It was all there. The arena was filled to capacity and electricity was in the air. Some supporters even arrived 40 hours ahead of time just to secure a seat. The atmosphere was charged, the likes of which we haven’t seen since the days of Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign.

The big red “Keep America Great” balloon floats proudly over Washington.

What better time to accuse the President of the United States of rape?

Columnist E. Jean Carroll enters the stage. She accuses the President of sexual assault. She provides a first-hand account of an attack which allegedly occurred in the mid-90s. She estimates it was likely the fall of 1995 or the spring of 1996 based on the overcoat Trump was wearing and the Donna Karan coat dress she had on. My colleague, Jennifer Van Laar, reported the details of Carroll’s accusation here.

That’s better now. The air begins to seep out of the Trump balloon.

Oh, by the way, Carroll has written a soon to be released book entitled “What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal” in which she says five or six men had sexually assaulted her in the late 1990s.

What better way is there to boost sales than to accuse the President of rape?

Clearly, I have no idea what did or did not happen between Trump and Carroll. Here’s why Carroll’s account of the “experience” doesn’t sound credible to me.

Carroll is now 75 years old. In 1995, she would have been 51. How could a mature woman, a sophisticated New Yorker and a savvy professional journalist, allow herself to be sexually assaulted five or six times? Wouldn’t she smarten up after the first time, or at least the second time, and stay away from situations that could set her up for an assault?

Trump allegedly asks her to try on a “lacy see-through bodysuit of lilac gray.” She says he should try it on. They banter back and forth about who should try it on. She describes the situation in an “href=”https://www.thecut.com/2019/06/donald-trump-assault-e-jean-carroll-other-hideous-men.html”>excerpt from her new book.

“Come on,” he says, taking my arm. “Let’s put this on.”

This is gonna be hilarious, I’m saying to myself — and as I write this, I am staggered by my stupidity. As we head to the dressing rooms, I’m laughing aloud and saying in my mind: I’m gonna make him put this thing on over his pants!

I’m staggered by your stupidity too.

Also, she was in the dressing room of a major department store rather than an isolated location. Why did she not scream for help? It couldn’t have been too far away.

E. Jean Carroll’s account of alleged sexual assault almost makes Christine Blasey Ford’s story believable…actually it doesn’t, but you understand my point.

Over and above the details Carroll provides, it is the timing of Carroll’s announcement alone, wedged in between Trump’s extraordinarily triumphant 2020 kickoff rally and the release of her new book, which makes what is already a dubious accusation, well…less credible.

Carroll has two very compelling reasons to reveal such a story at this particular time.

Democrats do have a tendency to trot out sexual assault victims at politically expedient moments.

By doing so, they exploit the very group of women they claim to support the most.

The Washington Examiner’s Kaylee McGhee wrote a piece entitled,”From Kavanaugh to Carroll, a straight line of incredulity.” She writes:

Ford’s story, however, was used by Democrats to assassinate the character of a man against whom they had no corroborative evidence. She became the Democrats’ tool for derailing another Supreme Court nomination. For those who disagree, take a look at the other women who came forward after Ford. Each one of their stories was proven false. They lied to promote a narrative, and the whole nation suffered as a result.

Ford’s assault — which I do believe happened, but probably not at Kavanaugh’s hands — became the weapon…Ford is not to blame; the Democrats are, the ones who made her story public against her will and then used her, only to toss her aside afterward. As a result of their actions, even a more apparently credible accusation like Carroll’s is harder to believe.

The political cheapening of sexual assault is a disservice to survivors. Something that should serve as a unifying cry of condemnation has been turned into the cause of division; the pain of hundreds of thousands of women is now just a weapon.

Somewhere along the way, between Harvey Weinstein’s downfall and Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony, sexual assault became just another political commodity.

Isn’t it time to bring politics back to the issues?

No Sh**, No Lies Tales From the Infantry. Volume IV

Alpha Company, 3d Battalion, 6th Infantry passes in review at the July 4 parade on the Four-Ring at McNair Barracks, Berlin. July 4, 1982. Photo: US Army photo, public domain. Credit: Das AlliiertenMuseum, Berlin.

Since Colonel Mike isn’t around to spin his yarns this morning, it is my duty to take up the slack. What follows is a tale that was inspired by my colleague Alex Parker.

This is a tale of perseverance. Of mutiny. Of justice maintained. And of an old dog showing younger dogs that he was a force to be reckoned with.

Back when I was 23 years old, weighed 155 lbs, had a full head of hair and thought beer was food, I was a infantry lieutenant assigned to 4th Battalion, 6th Infantry (Regulars, By God) at McNair Barracks, Berlin. McNair was affectionately know as the “Gator Farm” because it housed three battalions of the 6th Infantry an our unit crest featured an alligator to commemorate our participation in the Seminole wars:
Westlake Legal Group 6th-infantry No Sh**, No Lies Tales From the Infantry. Volume IV tales of the infantry Miscellania military Front Page Stories Featured Story Allow Media Exception

The scaling ladder is in memory of the 6th Infantry storming Chapultepec during the Mexican War. The juxtaposition of the two resulted in the troops claiming it meant that we were so low that we had to climb a ladder to kiss an alligator’s ass.

McNair Barracks was a pre-war Siemens radio factory that was confiscated in 1945 being one of the few undamaged structures remaining in that shattered city.

This first video show McNair as I knew it. My battalion was in the wing with the clock tower. The second video is it as it is today.

This is it after conversion into civilian housing.

Infantry units, particularly spirited ones, hover in a state of near mutiny. There is probably not a more arrogant creature on earth than a 20-year-old American infantryman who knows he’s very good at his job. He’ll let leadership know constantly that he’s not just another guy in a uniform and that to get respect, and not mere obedience, from him respect must be shown to him.

We had a newly arrived First Sergeant. He’d come to us from “The Zone” (the term a carry over from The Zone of Occupation and that was what Berlin troops called West Germany) to punch his ticket in an environment that remarkably benign for senior NCOs. Where junior officers were confronted with an endless series of “bet your bars” activities, so long as the correct paperwork was processed on time and reasonably accurately, life was pretty pleasant. There was even an unwritten rule that platoon sergeants and first sergeants and sergeants major didn’t go to the field while we were “in city.” Our First Sergeant was a gray, non-charismatic type who’d made his rank serving in staff positions. The troops wasted little time in letting him know, indirectly, that they were of the opinion that he was in the wrong outfit.

My platoon occupied a series of 8-man rooms (four sets of bunk beds and two wall lockers per man, one for issue gear and one for personal clothing) and we had one gang latrine. It was here that the subversion began.

Someone began leaving graffiti on the latrine walls written in human feces. The graffiti focused on the First Sergeant’s sexual proclivities and maybe even his sexual identity. The chief suspect was one of my troopers who was nicknamed “Tex.” Tex didn’t like the First Sergeant. He was also about 6’4″, which comported with the height of the graffiti off the floor. The First Sergeant made inquiries of an increasingly demanding nature but no one gave up Tex, the graffiti continued, and grew more florid and descriptive. The “Mad Sh**ter” became a man of legend. The First Sergeant was sort of caught in a conundrum and, to his credit, he realized it. He couldn’t very well allow this to continue because it was becoming a topic of conversation outside the company and he was losing respect. He could elevate the issue to the company commander (who was blithely unaware of this melodrama developing in his barracks as commanders often are…though sometimes they are unaware by design) who would bring smoke on the platoon leaders to ferret out the criminal, but this would be a senior NCO admitting to everyone that he needed his company commander’s help to fix a very personal disciplinary issue.

One day, during a break in training around the barracks, I did a walk-through of my platoon bay. When I go into the latrine I come face-to-face with one of my troops seated behind a field table. He was wearing a helmet liner (this was in the days of the steel pot), a key indicator that he was on some kind of guard duty. On the desk were a half-dozen rolls of toilet paper and a clipboard.

In order to use any of the facilities, you and the latrine guard had to conduct a joint inspection of the urinal or toilet and stall, both sign off on the condition, toilet paper was issued, business conducted, toilet paper returned, and a final clearance inspection performed. Guard duty was in two-hour shifts around the clock.

Graffiti stopped. Guard duty didn’t.

Within 48 hours someone had given up Tex.

Tex spent the next two weeks cleaning, by himself, all the latrines in the company (three large gang latrines). The giggles behind First Sergeant’s back stopped. He was never loved but he was treated with respect from that point forward and no one crossed him.

For some reason, there are people who say Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is fantastic. That puzzles me, because she seems to reveal a stunning lack of information and understanding every time she speaks. She tosses out her words with surety, yet she never appears justified in doing so.

As I covered June 19th, AOC mistakenly believed there are Holocaust-comparative “concentration camps” at the border. And she said so in an Instagram video that brought a lot of condemnation (here).

But in addition to Jewish groups, Holocaust survivors and others ripping her, some defended the 29-year-old freshman politician.

One of those was Ilhan Omar.

Ilhan used the opportunity to tout the abolition of ICE as well as to utter things that were dumb:

“This is very simple. I don’t even know why this is a controversial thing for her to say. We have to really truthfully speak about what’s taking place.”

In truth, Alexandria called to “Never Again” — a phrase regarding the Holocaust. She wasn’t, by contrast, commenting on how concentrated people are:

“That is exactly what [holding facilities] are. They are concentration camps. I want to talk to the people that are concerned enough with humanity to say that ‘Never Again’ means something. The fact that concentrations camps are now an institutionalized practice in the home of the free is extraordinarily disturbing and we need to do something about it.”

On Saturday, Donald Trump Jr. pounced like a cat on the goofiness of first-timers in Congress, praising their ultimate impact on voting in favor of the GOP. He called the new line-up of Democrats a “clown show”:

As pointed out by The Daily Caller, people who lambasted AOC for the gooberishness also include” the National Border Patrol Council, media, GOP lawmakers, and even the Auschwitz Museum…”

MAN — when you’ve made comments that bring the ire of all those above, you really know you’ve done something foolish.

But something tells me she still doesn’t know.

Donald Trump’s re-election campaign is jonesin’ for Hispanic votes.

Therefore, “Latinos for Trump” is kickin’ off in Miami on June 25th — one day before the first of the Democratic debates.

On the 26th & 27th, 20 of the 23 determined Dems’ll battle it out (see all their late-term abortion positions here).

Oy. It’s gonna get ugly.

As for the stump for Trump, VP Mike Pence will be among the GOP officials in attendance.

Hanna Castillo — director of coalitions for Trump 2020 — told The Hill Donald’s Hispanic fans are instrumental in his continued occupancy of the White House (which will hilariously last thousands of years — see here):

“The strong Latino support for President Trump and his policies will be instrumental in re-electing the president for a second term.”

Between 2014 and 2018, the number of Hispanic voters in Florida nearly doubled — holy moly.

What are some of Trump’s “pro-Hispanic” policies that oughta make ’em swoon?

As noted by The Hill, a couple are low unemployment and the Commander-in-Chief’s support of crapped-up Venezueala’s opposition leader Juan Guaidó — Juan aims to replace President Nicolás I-ain’t-goin’-nowhere Maduro (here).

In addition, recently the Leader of the Free World insisted to Telemundo that legal Hispanics support his position on deporting illegals. Here’s a bit of that convo with anchor José Díaz-Balart:

“They want me to do it. They’re here illegally,” Trump said.

“Mr. President, they do not,” Díaz-Balart responded.

“They do,” Trump reiterated. “They don’t want to lose their jobs. They want to keep their salaries, their wages up, and they don’t want crime. When people come through, you have MS-13 coming through.”

Díaz-Balart pushed back, telling Trump MS-13 gang members do not make up the majority of migrants seeking to enter the U.S.

“The mothers that are coming with their children are not MS-13,” he said.

“I agree, but if it was 1 in 100 it’s too many,” Trump responded.

What do you think of Trump’s 2020 Hispanic appeal? And what do you expect in the upcoming debates? Let us all know in the Comments section.

Woman Fearful for Her Life Turns Over Her Estranged Husband’s Guns to the Cops. She Gets Arrested for Grand Theft

An odd case, indeed — one on about which I’d like your opinion.

Florida couple Joseph and Courtney Irby were going through a rough divorce.

On June 14th — having just completed a divorce hearing — the two got into a fierce argument. As Courtney was leaving the courthouse, Joseph rear-ended her; she was on the phone with the cops, and he was trying to run her off the road.

Allegedly, of course..

That resulted in Joseph being taken into custody and held overnight for domestic aggravated battery.

Purportedly fearing for her life, Courtney did some proactive protectin’ — she went to Joe’s apartment, searched and found his guns, and took ’em with her.

Ain’t nobody shootin’ her!

She drove the firearms to the Lakeland Police Department and told the boys in blue she didn’t trust her soon-to-be-ex-husband to turn them in.

She explained that she’d taken them from his residence, which resulted in this from the officer:

“So, are you telling me you committed an armed burglary?”

Add to that grand theft of a fiream.

The cops called Joseph at the jail, and he said he’d like to press charges.

Courtney was arrested.

She spent 5 nights in jail.

Strange case…or is it? There’s been a bit of public outcry over a woman afraid for her life taking matters into her own thievin’ hands. Some believe she shouldn’t be punished.

That group includes Democratic state Rep. Anna Eskamani:

What do you think? Should Courtney be prosecuted? She indeed took things from another person’s residence; but they were not fully divorced…are the guns half hers? What about the protection element of all this?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts in the Comments section.

Joseph and Courtney are due back in divorce court on July 16th. I’m sure a fun time will be had by all.
