Idiot Attempts a Home Invasion on an 11-Year-Old. The Kid Hits the Burglar in the Head – With a Machete. Game Over

Good grief.

In North Carolina Friday, an 11-year-old boy showed a guy what’s what after the dude served up a home invasion.

The kid was home alone and answered the door to find a woman there. During the distraction of that event, a dude broke into the house through a window. Grabbing a pellet gun from the home, the robber forced the kid into a closet.

But the boy exited the closet and grabbed a freaking machete.

And he hacked the invader in the head.

The child got kicked in the stomach and kicked again, but he kept fighting.

Mr. Burglar grabbed a television, a PlayStation, and a few other goodies with the intention of blowin’ the joint like fast. But then he realized he was…what’s that called? Oh, yeah — BLEEDING FROM A MACHETE WOUND TO THE GOURD.

So he skedaddled, sans wares.

The genius who sneaked in through the window because he was too…

Actually, I’ll address this to him:

Dear Goofball,

If your robbery partner knocks on the door and the people open it, you don’t need to then scurry through a window to gain access. You can just come in through the door, dummy. It ain’t cool like the Duke boys gettin’ in through the window of the General Lee.

Anyway, the window guy and the door girl and a third man took off in the getaway car. But the kid called 911, and police notified hospitals to be looking for a dolt who enters houses needlessly through windows sportin’ a machete-gashed noggin.

Presto — 19-year-old…I’ll leave out his name…let’s just call him Nikola Tesla…had checked into UNC Hospital in Hillsborough. He’ll be showing his head wound in court Monday, on charges of breaking and entering, 2nd-degree kidnapping, interfering with emergency communications, and assaulting a child under 12. And also: being a dipstick and getting bested by an 11-year-old.

He should hook up with this guy and form a super-crime duo.

Good job, kiddo.

-ALEX

GOP Representative Dis-Invited From Speaking at Cyber Security Conference Over Unrelated Pro-Life Views

Westlake Legal Group WillHurd-620x325 GOP Representative Dis-Invited From Speaking at Cyber Security Conference Over Unrelated Pro-Life Views Will Hurd republicans Pro-Life Politics New Reality Liberals left-wing Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story dangerous Cybersecurity Crazy Boycotts Black Hat Conference axios

The “Black Hat Conference” is a cyber security forum that happens every year. It features plenty of politicians but also draws some people with genuine knowledge of the arena. One of those people who actually knows what he’s talking about is Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX). He’s a former CIA officer and specializes in the area.

He was scheduled to be a keynote speaker at the conference until something happened.

The short of it is that some pro-abortion liberals ran and cried about Hurd’s pro-life views and that got him uninvited as a keynote speaker. Here’s what was said by the conference spokesperson in response to the rescinding of the invite.

“We misjudged the separation of technology and politics,” wrote the conference in a emailed statement.

What you misjudged is how many cowards are on your planning committee. This is a cyber security conference. What does someone’s mainstream pro-life views on abortion have to do with anything? And what is gained by caving into those that complained?

Hurd gave your typical boilerplate response to being shunned.

“Representative Hurd was honored to be invited and hopes that the Black Hat Conference is a success,” said Katie Thompson, Hurd’s communications director, via email.

“Congressman Hurd has always sought to engage groups of people that don’t necessarily agree with all of his votes or opinions. That’s why Rep. Hurd is one of the loudest voices for bipartisanship in Congress.

With all due respect to the Congressman, this isn’t going to cut it. Taking the high road is just going to get you thrown off the road all together.

What’s happening here is profoundly dangerous. We’ve already seen numerous examples of this in blue states banning business with red states over the passage of state laws. The new trend on the left isn’t just condemnation when people disagree, it’s complete destruction and isolation. Say something they don’t agree with? They’ll organize a boycott of your advertisers or get you thrown out of a conference. It’s not enough to just say “I disagree” for these people.

This is the future and I don’t mean that dramatically. This is really the future.

Republicans better wake up sooner rather than later and realize the rules of the game have changed. De-platforming, financial destruction, mobbing, and total shunning from society are the left’s tactics now. Responding by wishing them success, as Hurd did here, is not a viable counter strategy.

We either fight on a level playing field or we will lose. Time for some GOP politicians to decide what they want their fate to be because this is coming for everyone.

John ‘I Don’t Do Evidence’ Brennan Appears To Be Spooked By Durham’s Plans To Interview CIA Officials

Westlake Legal Group ap-john-brennan-620x409 John ‘I Don’t Do Evidence’ Brennan Appears To Be Spooked By Durham’s Plans To Interview CIA Officials Trey Gowdy Shimon Prokupecz Russia putin President Trump Mueller Investigation John Brennan Front Page Stories Featured Story Don Lemon collusion cia Allow Media Exception 2020

CIA Director John Brennan testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, June 16, 2016, before the Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on the Islamic State. Brennan said that the Islamic State remains “formidable” and “resilient,” is training and attempting to deploy operatives for further attacks on the West and will rely more on guerrilla-style tactics to compensate for its territorial losses in the Middle East. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

Somehow I’d forgotten that former CIA Director John Brennan “doesn’t do evidence.”

During a May 23, 2017 House Intelligence Committee hearing on Russian interference in the 2016 election, then-Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), asked Brennan, “When you learned of Russian efforts, did you have evidence of a connection between the Trump campaign and Russian state actors?”

Brennan famously replied, “As I said, Mr. Gowdy, I don’t do evidence.”

As John Durham focuses on the origins of the Trump/Russia collusion investigation, he will be searching for evidence to support the long repeated claim that Russian interference helped sway the election to Donald Trump. Although four investigations have been conducted, including the exhaustive 22-month Mueller investigation, none have found sufficient evidence (or any evidence) to support these allegations. Durham’s investigators now plan to interview senior CIA officials to find some answers. The New York Times reported this story on Thursday in a front page article entitled “C.I.A. Scrutinized By Justice Department Over Russia Case.” The sub-headline read “Review May Put Focus On Conclusion That Putin Aided Trump To Win.”

Turns out, the left wasn’t so happy to hear this news. As far as they’re concerned, Putin ordered Russian operatives to do whatever was necessary to make sure Trump won the election.

The question is, was this just a fictional story manufactured to promote the Russia hoax? Since not even Mueller’s team of angry Democrats were able to uncover any concrete evidence, the answer may be yes.

Political analyst and former U.S. intelligence office Ray McGovern thinks so. He wrote:

With Justice Department investigators’ noses to the ground, it should be just a matter of time before they identify Brennan conclusively as fabricator-in-chief of the Russiagate story. Evidence, real evidence in this case, abounds, since the Brennan-Comey-Clapper gang of three were sure Hillary Clinton would become president. Consequently, they did not perform due diligence to hide their tracks.

Worse still, intelligence analysts tend to hang onto instructions and terms of reference handed down to them by people like Brennan and his top lieutenants. It will not be difficult for CIA analysts to come up with documents to support the excuse: “Brennan made me do it.”

John Brennan was especially piqued by this latest report. Here’s what he told NBC.

I’m very concerned about the upcoming presidential election. It’s clear that the Russians interfered to help Mr. Trump in 2016. Is Mr. Trump turning a blind eye to that because he doesn’t mind if the Russians involve themselves again to try to enhance his prospects for reelection? It’s really quite unnerving to think that this President, Mr. Trump, can in fact turn off law enforcement and intelligence capabilities if they pose a threat to him personally.

This is preposterous of course.

CNN’s Don Lemon discussed the NY Times report on his program. His guest, CNN Justice Reporter Shimon Prokupecz said, “It’s troubling, because…it’s not…you don’t do this. The CIA kind of operates in their own world.”

It’s troubling to ask questions of the CIA? Are they above the law, outside the law?

Prokupecz redeems himself, perhaps realizing how his answer came across and offers a more truthful response.

And for the Department of Justice to start begin questioning CIA agents, people who work there, questioning their work. You know for me I think what all this comes down to is former CIA director, John Brennan. I know the president obviously has been very unhappy with the way John Brennan has behaved since he left office. I think it goes back to that.

He’s very concerned about the information and how some of the information that the CIA had really may not have been stood up. They couldn’t verify a lot of the information. And the CIA, certainly John Brennan, was sounding a lot of alarms to Congress saying something’s going on here. I know he was talking to people at the FBI at the time concerned something was going on. But what we’re seeing from the Attorney General right now is that he’s saying that they were acting on a lot of information that he’s concerned was not verified, there was no there, there. And perhaps they were overreacting and therefore caused other people to start reacting like the FBI and so it’s very — this is we’re in an extremely unprecedented time in terms of when you have Department of Justice officials now questioning CIA agents and analysts.

(The segment begins at 11:25 in the video below.)

Although Prokupecz, if he wants to keep his job at CNN, couldn’t go too far with his remarks, the truth is most, if not all, of Brennan’s assertions couldn’t be verified. He was telling anyone in Washington who would listen about the Russian collusion story in 2016. And it was Brennan who pushed the FBI to open an investigation.

Where I disagree with Prokupecz is when he offers Brennan an “out” by saying, “perhaps they were overreacting.” More accurately, they were lying. Initially, they were trying to prevent a Trump victory and, in the unlikely event that Trump did win, they were setting the stage for the “insurance policy” to go into effect.

As RedState’s Kira Davis covered at the end of May, a man named CeCe Telfer raked track-runnin’ ladies over the coals as he leapt to victory in the NCAA DII women’s 400-meter hurdles on May 25th.

CeCe ran for Franklin-Pierce University as “Craig” last year, competing against men. But now, CeCe’s dustin’ the girls.

Some people thought it was great that CeCe did his thang. Parker Molloy, for example:

Parker characterized conservative media that recounted CeCe’s win as suffering from an irrational fear and doing a bit of fit-pitching:

Parker posted this to sock it to right-wingers:

So goes the culture war, I suppose.

As for the war on the track, CeCe says the battle was indeed unfairly fought — women had the advantage over him:

“If anything, me competing against cisgender females is a disadvantage because my body is going through so many medical implications, like it’s going through biochemistry changes.”

Such was told to ESPN’s Outside the Lines Thursday.

He explained that his strength is all messed up:

“So being on hormone replacement therapy, your muscle depletion, your muscle is deteriorating, you lose a lot of strength because testosterone is where you get your strength and agility and all that athletic stuff, so I have to work twice as hard to keep that strength. And if I slack a day that’s like three days set behind.”

In case your’e wonderin’, the NCAA now lets dudes compete against chicks if they suppress their testosterone levels for a full year.

Does that make them shorter? CeCe’s over six feet tall. And it’s…hurdles.

I spotlighted CeCe’s trajectory in February. Please check out my article, “Sad Sack: Man Sets Record In NCAA Women’s Track — And He’s Headed For The March Championships.”

I think it’s great CeCe’s competing in sports, and he looks like an impressive athlete. And I believe he should present himself however he chooses.

Also, the girl who placed 2nd in the championship would’ve won, and #3 would’ve come in 2nd, and so on, just a few years ago. In effect, the NCAA is making a move against female athletes — men are bigger, faster, stronger. If women want to give up some athletic career potential and compete against the men, it’s their prerogative. But what about the ones who don’t? Not everyone does. Olympic medalist Sharron Davies, for instance:

It’s a peculiar situation in which we find ourselves. And it’s one in which women are getting beaten. And beaten. And beaten:

It Takes Balls: Man Competes In Women’s Powerlifting, Sets Four World Records

#DefeatAllWomen: Man Wins Women’s Cycling Competition (Plus: The Future Of Sports)

Disguise it as progressive; call it woke; label it justice. Put on it any face you want; it’s still unfair.

All hail the winner of ladies’ sports: Toxic Maskulinity.

The Twitter world is abuzz this morning after a video tweet was posted shortly before midnight eastern time Friday night from who appears to be O.J. Simpson, who was found not guilty in October 1995 of the brutal June 1994 murders of his wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman in a criminal trial

In a 22 second video that looks like it was taken on a golf course, or at a beach (or both), the person who looks and sounds remarkably like the disgraced former football star smiled as he said:

“Hey, Twitter world. This is yours truly. Now coming soon to Twitter, you’ll get to read all my thoughts and opinions on just about everything.

How there’s a lot of fake O.J. accounts out there. So this one at @TheRealOJ32 is the only official one. So it should be a lot of fun.

I’ve got a little gettin’ even to do. So God bless and take care.”

Watch it:

As of this writing, the video has almost 2 million views, over 7,000 comments (Twitchy documented some of them here), almost 10,000 RTs and close to 27,000 likes. The account has over 103,000 followers, but does not contain the blue check mark to note that it’s an authentic/verified account.

The fact that it hasn’t been taken down by Twitter nearly 12 hours after it was started, and considering that Twitter has to be aware of it and the buzz around it, leads me to lean towards the “it’s real” camp. But we won’t know for sure unless it gets that blue check mark or unless O.J. is interviewed by a news outlet and confirms it’s him.

But assuming it is him, the ghoulish, tone-deaf aspect of all of this cannot be denied:

Guilty or not (guilty), O.J. continues to be perhaps the most tone deaf figure in all of sports. His Twitter debut comes only days after the 25th anniversary of the deaths of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and the young man, Ronald Goldman, who was in the worst possible place at the worst possible time.

Though Simpson was found “not guilty” in the criminal trial, he was ordered to pay $33.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages to the families of the victims in a civil trial in 1997.

Simpson has not paid a dime of it.

O.J. Simpson is now 72 years old. You can read about the numerous controversial actions he has taken over the years in the aftermath of the criminal and civil trials here.

College With $887M Endowment Poor-Mouths That $33M Settlement for Misconduct Will Hurt Students

Westlake Legal Group Formal_Seal_of_Oberlin_College_Oberlin_OH_USA-620x617 College With $887M Endowment Poor-Mouths That $33M Settlement for Misconduct Will Hurt Students settlement racism Politics Oberlin College Liberalism left-wing judgement Illiberal Gibson Bro. Bakery Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Dumpster #BlackLivesMatter

Well, this is certainly brazen.

As I reported yesterday, Oberlin College got hit with punitive damages of $33M for coordinated attacks by their employees and students on a local bakery. The back story boils down to the fact that this bakery tried to stop three people from shop-lifting some wine. This led to sustained attacks, spurned on by #blacklivesmatters, based on false accusations of racism that caused serious harm to the business.

Fox 8 in Cleveland covers the bases here.

A member of the Gibson family stopped an African American student who was shoplifting in their store. The shoplifter later admitted to the crime.

In demonstrations afterwards, other students labeled the Gibsons as racist and portrayed their action as racially motivated.

The demonstrators demanded the school end a long-standing contract with the bakery to provide baked goods for a cafeteria there, and the college acquiesced, even though the evidence showed that administrators knew the family’s actions were not racially-motivated and after receiving messages from alumni and supporters of the Gibsons insisting the college intervene with the smear tactics of the students.

The $33M in damages award punitively yesterday will likely be reduced to $22M due to how the law works. When added to the original $11M judgement, total damages will return to $33M.

This has Oberlin college poor-mouthing about how such a judgement will hurt their student body and others not directly involved in the activities in question.

“A punitive damages award will impact people that had nothing to do with this process, nothing to do with these events — moneys going from Oberlin College to students who could not otherwise afford an education,” said Oberlin College attorney Rachelle Kuznicki Zidar.

One, they should have thought about that before doing what they did. The fact that a punishment may cause harm to other parties at the school is not an excuse for the punishment to not exist. Oberlin made their bed and now they must be made to lie in it.

Secondly, this is absolute nonsense. Take one guess how big Oberlin’s endowment is.

Total endowed funds as of June 30, 2018 were $887.4 million, as compared to $820.3 million the previous year, an increase of $67.1 million. In comparison, total endowed funds increased by $66.8 million in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2017, from $753.5 million at June 30, 2016.

Now, I understand that endowments are used as investments to generate returns for operations and some scholarship programs. But the idea that a $33M judgement is going to have any tangible effect on their ability to serve their students is ridiculous. With an endowment of $887.4M that is growing by over $60M a year, there is a lot of money to burn there if needed. They are not spending every dime in investment returns on student operations, which is why the endowment is growing year over year.

The only way students are hurt by this is if Oberlin chooses to hurt them over this. It’s obscene to see this dumpster of a university try to poor-mouth after a just settlement while sitting on almost a billion dollars. The time for worrying about their students was before they took part in the scheme they propagated.

Some of these schools simply don’t deserve to exist anymore. They’ve become useless, cesspools of illiberal thought that simply put their students into massive debt for degrees that aren’t worth the investment in the first place.

Oberlin is going to appeal and are already responding defiantly that this isn’t the end of the story. If there’s any justice in our system, they’ll not be relieved of a single dime of the judgement against them. It’s vital that a lesson is learned here and that an example is made.

Gregg Abbott Is Making It Fun to Watch Authoritarianism Die

Westlake Legal Group o-GREG-ABBOTT-facebook-620x310 Gregg Abbott Is Making It Fun to Watch Authoritarianism Die Texas Taxes republicans red-light cameras property Politics lemonade laws Greg Abbott Front Page Stories freedom Free Speech Featured Story America Allow Media Exception

It may be increasingly infested with blue voters, but Texas is still an example of what a state should look like, and it’s only getting increasingly better while Governor Greg Abbott is in charge.

Over the past few months, Republican legislators have been working with Abbott to take the government’s hands off the people. Superfluous laws and authoritarian actions are dying highly public deaths, and Abbott is making it all too entertaining to watch.

Abbott has a habit of taking to social media to allow you to watch the signing of bills that pry the government’s kung-fu grip off of the people. This includes red light cameras

…looser liquor laws, including one that allows it to be delivered directly to your home like a pizza…

…a law protecting free speech on campus

…and even a law that allows children to open up a lemonade stand without running into the law.

The weird thing about these laws is that they’re laws that Abbott shouldn’t have even had to sign in the first place, but thanks to the progression of the Overton window, many find these things Abbott is having to protect perfectly fine to trample on.

Abbott shouldn’t have had to sign a law protecting free speech on college campuses. Red light cameras were unconstitutional from the get-go. Police have absolutely no business shutting down a kid’s lemonade stand. yet it happens. That’s the kind of country that we reside in now.

Some of the things Abbott is doing may seem small, but it’s the small things that really make you proud to be an American. It’s the fact that we can exist in a place where an enterprising child can take his or her steps into the world of capitalism. It’s a world where a person can speak freely without suffering some form of institutionalized punishment.

These little holds of misplaced authoritarianism nickle and dime us into figurative — and sometimes literal — chains.

But before you get into the idea that Abbott is only playing softball, the Texas Governor is taking steps to make sure that property owners are paying less in taxes, and putting the leash on municipal governments who want to really come down hard on the wallets of those who live there, which has been a long-standing problem in the state.

He’s also seeing to it that the Texas government has far more transparency by terminating lawmakers from having walking quorums.

I sincerely doubt he’s done. I sincerely hope this trend continues, not even just in Texas, but all over the country. We’ve entered into an era of walking on eggshells both in the social and legal scenes. Abbott and the Texas legislature are doing a lot to relieve the pressure, and we really need that to happen in order to bring us back to an America where we really are free to be free.

Personally, I’d consider it preferable if the realm of social media was more of an open forum than a thought police state.

Unfortunately for me, those who control social media have a different view entirely.

Man — isn’t that one of the most frustrating things in the world? “A different view entirely”?

“A different view entirely” is a jerk.

Yet, it’s what makes the world go ’round, and American discussion could, in my estimation, use more of it.

Brilliant Jordan Peterson (here and here) seems to hanker for more open conversation as well, hence his touting of a new free-speech forum on the web called Thinkspot.

The professor delivered news of the site — which is currently in beta testing — on the excellent Joe Rogan Experience podcast last week.

On Monday, he tweeted more:

A wait list? Sign me up.

The platform will allow for the monetization of original content, and thoughtful debate can be had without some stripe-shirted tech giant stepping in and blowing the whistle.

He vowed to good ol’ Joe:

“Once you’re on our platform, we wont take you down unless ordered to by a court of law.”

Fantastic!

Here’s more:

“We’re hoping we can really add dialogue to the podcast and YouTuber world. We’re also gonna do the same things with books, so if you buy an e-book on the platform, you’ll be able to annotate publicly. … We can do that with books that are in the public domain, too.”

Will the social media fun-for-all be comprised by just a bunch of dorks?

Heck no:

“We’re hoping that we’ll be able to pull people who are interested in intelligent conversation, specifically, into this platform, maybe start pulling them away from YouTube and some of the less specialized channels — that, plus our anti-censorship stance.”

Posts will have a 50-word minimum to help prevent trolling.

Interesting idea.

Jordan expounded:

“If minimum comment length is 50 words, you’re gonna have to put a little thought into it. Even if you’re being a troll, you’ll be a quasi-witty troll. If your ratio of upvotes to downvotes falls below 50/50 then your comments will be hidden, people will still be able to see them, if they click, but you’ll disappear … We don’t know if 50/50 is right.”

For now, the site’s invitation-only.

So who are some of the testers?

Why, it’s Skeptic magazine Editor-in-Chief Michael Shermer, YouTuber Sargon of Akkad, and one of my personal favorites, the great Dave Rubin (check out Dave’s show, The Rubin Report).

So get ready, tweeters and Tubers, we’re headed toward the Sizzlean of social media. No more heart-clogging censorship. If things go well in beta, you may soon be able to say, “Roll over, bacon, now there’s somethin’ meetier.”

The UK on a Roll With Idiocy: Britain Bans Ads Containing ‘Harmful Gender Stereotypes’

Yesterday, I covered a town in the UK’s knife-swapping program: If you’re a victim of domestic violence, they’ll trade you a dull-pointed kitchen knife for your sharp-pointed one. That way, your violent maniacal man can’t stab you to death. Oh, shoot — he can still slit your throat.

I highly recommend you read the article. But a warning: If you’re allergic to Stupid, take some Benadryl first.

In fact, take some whether you read that one or not. This one’s a doozy.

Here we go:

In Britain, scenes in ads with gender stereotypes will now be banned.

Because grown people just can’t take it.

As reported by the Agence France-Presse, Advertising Standards Authority Chief Executive Guy Parker explained in a statement:

“We have turds for brains. Pure turds, I tell you. Pure. And turds. Pure turds.”

Oh, sorry. That’s not exactly what he said…

Here it is:

“Our evidence shows how harmful gender stereotypes in ads can contribute to inequality in society, with costs for all of us. Put simply, we found that some portrayals in ads can, over time, play a part in limiting people’s potential.”

The government’s just watchin’ out for y’all dummies.

“It’s in the interests of women and men, our economy and society that advertisers steer clear of these outdated portrayals, and we’re pleased with how the industry has already begun to respond.”

The ASA’s released a list of ad scenarios “likely to be problematic.”

I’ve said it more than once: The most diabolically woke word in the English language is “problematic.” If you see that word, run for your life.

Same goes, apparently, for seeing these scenarios:

  • An ad that depicts a man with his feet up and family members creating mess around a home while a woman is solely responsible for cleaning up the mess.
  • An ad that depicts a man or a woman failing to achieve a task specifically because of their gender e.g. a man’s inability to change nappies; a woman’s inability to park a car.
  • Where an ad features a person with a physique that does not match an ideal stereotypically associated with their gender, the ad should not imply that their physique is a significant reason for them not being successful, for example in their romantic or social lives.
  • An ad that seeks to emphasise the contrast between a boy’s stereotypical personality (e.g. daring) with a girl’s stereotypical personality (e.g. caring) needs to be handled with care.
  • An ad aimed at new mums which suggests that looking attractive or keeping a home pristine is a priority over other factors such as their emotional wellbeing.
  • An ad that belittles a man for carrying out stereotypically ‘female’ roles or tasks.

This is…what’s that word? Oh, yeah: pathetic.

First of all, any time you generalize, you err; yet generalities exist for a reason — they reflect common truths. And if men and women fall into divided roles by and large, there’s nothing wrong with that.

For example, if there are more male coal miners than female, who cares?

If you’re a woman who wants to be a coal miner, but you think you shan’t dare accomplish it because the coal miner in the diarrhea commercial had a penis, then I’m sorry — but you don’t deserve to be a coal miner.

People should do what they want; they’ll figure it out. We don’t need the government trying to protect our dinosaur brains.

Fortunately, the ASA’s cuttin’ everybody a little slack — here are some situations they’re cool with (for the moment):

  • A woman doing the shopping or a man doing DIY.
  • Glamorous, attractive, successful, aspirational or healthy people or lifestyles.
  • One gender only, including in ads for products developed for and aimed at one gender.
  • Gender stereotypes as a means to challenge their negative effects.

This isn’t the country’s first imbecilic advertising rodeo: In October, they banned commercials because the model was too slim (here).

As for their latest triumph, in a year, the ASA will review the policy’s success.

Success at being breathtakingly idiotic?

Mission Accomplished, goobs. Mission accomplished.

Disabled Woman Tweets Epic Thread Demonstrating the Absurdity of Plastic Straw Bans – and Her Rant Goes Viral

Do you know anyone – or have you ever met anyone – who is in favor of plastic straw bans?

My experiences are anecdotal, to be sure, but I don’t know nor have I ever met a single person who is okay with them. Though some seem resigned to the inevitability of it happening in their city and/or state on down the road, they’re still not crazy about the idea. Seems invasive. Unnecessary.

Yesterday on Twitter, a user by the name of “moe” tweeted a lengthy rant on trying to obtain a plastic straw at a restaurant she was at with her dad Thursday morning, and how humiliating the experience was for her. Here’s what she said happened:

She also tweeted a graphic demonstrating why single-use plastic straws are the best option for many disabled individuals. Apparently environmentalists came after her, because in the next couple of tweets she clapped back regarding her green habits:

Read the full thread, unrolled, here. As of this writing, the first tweet in the thread has gotten nearly 18,000 retweets and close to 70,000 likes.

I assume the restaurant in question was either following some city or state law about plastic straw use in restaurants, or had their own individual policy on the matter.

Either way, there are a number of things wrong here.

1) No one should have to beg for a plastic straw in a dining establishment. No one.

2) A disabled person should not have to “prove” their disability in order to obtain a plastic straw. Period.

3) People should not have to carry their own personal “straw stash” with them to restaurants. It’s ridiculous.

4) Assuming someone doesn’t care about the environment simply because they prefer to use plastic straws is absurd.

There are many reasons why plastic straw bans are unnecessary. “Moe” tweeted a big one. Another big reason why is the fact that plastic straws only make up a super, duper tiny percentage of the plastic that is actually out there in the environment:

The concern most often cited is the problem of pollution. But plastic pollution represents only a small fraction of all litter, and plastic straws comprise only a small fraction of plastic. A Bloomberg estimate suggests that if every single plastic straw discarded on a beach were swept into the sea all at once, those straws would represent 0.3 percent of all ocean plastic pollution in a year. If cities want to attack pollution, there are far more meaningful efforts that could be undertaken. Of plastic waste that moves from land to ocean, the United States accounts for only 0.9 percent worldwide, according to the International Solid Waste Association. The top five offenders are China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka, which together account for 54.5 percent of mismanaged plastic waste globally. The problem is not in Seattle.

Ultimately, the environmentalist left’s straw bans are little more than virtue signaling on steroids. The government-mandated bans are an unnecessary inconvenience, especially for the disabled.

Free the plastic straws!
