Why Did House Democrats Disregard Warnings Of Mueller’s ‘Condition’?

Especially to those who have known and worked with former special counsel Robert Mueller over his long career in law enforcement, his performance before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees on Wednesday came as a shock.

Matt Drudge described him as “dazed and confused.”

“At times it was halting and slow and painful,” said Fox News’ Brett Baier.

Glenn Kirschner, a former federal prosecutor who worked under Mueller in the U.S. attorney’s office tweeted, “Bob Mueller is struggling. It strikes me as a health issue. We need only look at footage of his earlier congressional appearances to see the dramatic difference in his demeanor and communicative abilities.”

The former Special Counsel, who will turn 75 in two weeks, appeared in both looks and demeanor to be at least ten years older. He asked for most questions to be repeated.  At a certain point, it became difficult to watch and I almost began to feel sorry for this man whom I’ve despised for two years.

Why would Democrats subject a man in Robert Mueller’s obviously frail condition to over six torturous hours of testimony? How did House Democrats allow yesterday’s debacle on Capitol Hill to ever happen?

According to Politico, people close to Mueller were whispering that he may not be “up to” testifying before Congress. Politico reported:

House Democrats caught wind of Robert Mueller’s reluctance earlier this year: the special counsel may not be “up to” testifying after he concluded his Russia probe.

The chatter was second-hand and cryptic. Staffers negotiating to get Mueller to appear on Capitol Hill weren’t sure where the messages were originally coming from. Were people close to Mueller sending a signal? Or was it just Justice Department officials who didn’t want the blockbuster hearing to go forward? Were there fears that Mueller’s reputation would be savaged in the hyper-partisan political circus of 2019? Were there stamina concerns?

“Take a break and listen on the radio, or close your eyes for a couple of minutes. He sounds much older — his starched, tall, distinguished physical appearance helps a great deal,” a former senior FBI official told Politico.

“He is clearly struggling a little, especially with long, convoluted questions. Having said that, even Mueller at his peak would be playing it very conservatively and would be giving short, curt answers,” added a second former FBI official.

I noticed that something seemed amiss with Mueller during his nine-minute “sneak attack” on May 29th. I wrote at the time:

If you watch Mueller’s demeanor, especially when he first steps up to the podium, he appears extremely ill at ease. It’s hard to imagine that such a powerful man would be quite so nervous, but he appeared petrified. And all he had to do was read something. He gave the impression that if he had to answer a serious question, he would explode.

He also made it clear that he was done. He would not take questions now or at anytime later, telling those gathered that the report speaks for itself.

Conservative commentator Mark Levin went even further. He said that Mueller appeared feeble. “This is not a man who would do well under seven, eight, nine hours of questioning, with the Republicans honing in on so many issues.”

Boy, was he right. And all Mueller had to do that day was read a statement.

Hot Air’s Allapundit offered his theories for why, knowing about Mueller’s condition, Nadler and Schiff were so determined to have him testify.

Progressives demanded it, and thus they were duty bound to haul him in whether he was “up to” it or not to prove their loyalty to The Cause. They weren’t about to say, “We can’t have him testify because he’s lost a step.” That would have undermined the credibility of the investigation, not to mention impugned Mueller. Better to bring him in and cross their fingers that his answers would sound cogent.

Another theory, if you’re into skullduggery, is that they wanted to cool the left’s impeachment ardor and were counting on a bad performance today by Mueller to do that. Certainly, the House is less likely to impeach now after listening to this than they were a month ago, no?

I agree with the former. I would add that this was their last opportunity to make their case for impeachment.

But given Mueller’s health, subjecting him to six hours of public testimony was cruel and, as it turned out,  a miscalculation of epic proportions.

Their dreams of impeaching President Trump are dead.

NeverTrump Keeps the Home Fires Burning For Robert Mueller Because OrangeManBad

Yesterday, we saw a tired and doddering Robert Mueller spend some five hours demonstrating that he really hadn’t the vaguest idea about a) the facts in the report he allegedly oversaw, or b) who wrote the report, or c) who even prepared his office’s rejoinder to Attorney General Bob Barr’s summary. While the performance was so bad that even the Democrats noticed, there was one resolute group who held firm to the belief that Robert Mueller was anything but a puppet who participated in a soft coup attempt. This is a two-fer.

The facts show that by the time Mueller came on board as Special Counsel the FBI had thoroughly vetted the driving force behind the entire investigation, that would be the Steele Dossier:

Multiple sources familiar with the FBI spreadsheet tell me the vast majority of Steele’s claims were deemed to be wrong, or could not be corroborated even with the most awesome tools available to the U.S. intelligence community. One source estimated the spreadsheet found upward of 90 percent of the dossier’s claims to be either wrong, nonverifiable or open-source intelligence found with a Google search.

In other words, it was mostly useless.

The FBI already knew the rumor of “dirt” on Clinton that was passed to George Stephanopoulos was false and that its source was Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese academic who appears to be an asset of one or more Western intelligence agencies. A man who lied repeatedly to the FBI yet was never indicted, much less arrested, tried and convicted. (See Jim Jordan Fillets Mueller on Joseph Mifsud Not Being Charged, Exposes Serious Credibility Issues With the Probe.)

You can call Mueller honorable if you wish, but I think it is a stretch to consider carrying out a two year investigation into charges that were known to be false on Day One as anything but criminal misconduct. Professionals don’t go after individual Americans with the intent to deprive them of their freedom simply of the sake of building a body count.

There was other ridiculousness out there. One particularly bizarre claim was that the GOP failed because they asked questions about Steele and about Fusion GPS. I suspect that critique was more due to Mueller claiming to have never heard of the firm that brokered the meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and two of its stringers at Trump Tower than anything else. How better to cover up his dottiness than by claiming people with actual law degrees and prosecutorial experience don’t know what they are doing.

And, after burning through “they are more noble” and “Republicans are stupid” the final turn is to “both sides are bad, but Republicans are worse.” This is an example of the this tired bullsh**:

Republicans were even worse — far worse. At least a number of Democrats carefully highlighted parts of Mueller’s report that merited elucidation. Every single Republican acted as if the report were an entirely illegitimate exercise and as if the president were their client. Forget the congressional job of oversight of the executive.

This was lickspittle toadyism at its worst.

Does not a single one of those Republicans care about the vast degree of Russia’s attempts to undermine a U.S. election? Is none of them bothered by Trump’s obvious attempts to impede a valid national security-related investigation (even if those attempts to impede may not have risen to the level of impeachable “obstruction”)? Is no Republican bothered by the Trump team’s documented interest in receiving assistance from Russians with Kremlin ties, even if none engaged in a criminal conspiracy?

To repeat, their job is not to protect Trump. Their job is to protect our republic. Republicans contradicted their own name by leaving our small-‘r’ republican systems undefended. This is a dereliction of duty. This is worse than shameful. This is grossly, despicably, willfully irresponsible.

This is all total hogwash. A hearing is just that. A hearing. Mueller was there to explain and defend his report, much of which ran contrary to information that had been widely circulated not to mention common sense. For instance, Mueller, himself, did not claim the Russian government interfered. In fact, Mueller’s team was chastised by a federal judge for making that implication without providing evidence.

In fact, Mueller does not directly attribute that campaign to the Russian government, and makes only the barest attempt to imply a Kremlin connection. According to Mueller, the social media “form of Russian election influence came principally from the Internet Research Agency, LLC (IRA), a Russian organization funded by Yevgeniy Viktorovich Prigozhin and companies he controlled.”

After two years and $35 million, Mueller apparently failed to uncover any direct evidence linking the Prigozhin-controlled IRA’s activities to the Kremlin. His best evidence is that “[n]umerous media sources have reported on Prigozhin’s ties to Putin, and the two have appeared together in public photographs.” The footnote for this references a lone article in the New York Times. (Both the Times and the Washington Post are cited frequently throughout the report. The two outlets received and published intelligence community leaks throughout the Russia probe.)

Further, in a newly unsealed July 1 ruling, a federal judge rebuked Mueller and the Justice Department for having “improperly suggested a link” between the IRA and the Russian government. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich said Mueller’s February 2018 indictment “does not link the [IRA] to the Russian government” and alleges “only private conduct by private actors.” The judge added the government’s statements violate a prohibiting lawyers from making claims that would prejudice a case.

Only conspiracy theorists would be agitated by something that Mueller does not even allege happened.

The real issue, the one that was examined by the GOP was the provenance of this investigation and how it was conducted. This is a thread from Sean Davis of The Federalist:

We were told Trump’s inquisitor was a calm, even-handed Republican with impeccable credentials who was trusted by everyone. What we learned yesterday was that the inquisition was run by the Democrat lawyer for Hillary Clinton’s aide who destroyed evidence with a hammer.

We were told that the evidence of alleged Russian collusion was rock solid, the work of America’s top intelligence agencies. In reality, it was pure fiction cooked up by a Clinton-funded foreign contractor on the payroll of a sanctioned Russian oligarch.

We were told the Trump campaign was never spied on or wiretapped by U.S. spy agencies. We now know the campaign was indeed wiretapped, that honeypots were deployed to entrap campaign affiliates, that overseas intel assets were used to set up meetings as pretexts for more spying.

We were told our nation’s intel agencies would never use false information to justify secret surveillance of American citizens. In reality, DON and the FBI peddled lies to the FISA court that were cooked up by a foreign spook and a DOJ official’s wife, both funded by Clinton.

We were told that our government’s top secret keepers would never leak classified or confidential information to the media. What actually happened is that top intel officials repeatedly leaked, often illegally, to cement a false narrative to support further spying on citizens.

Finally, we were told that America’s top cops and spies would never foment a coup to overturn election results they didn’t like. We now know the most powerful unelected people in government cooked up lies as part of an orchestrated scheme to overthrow the duly elected president.

While the Democrats have fall back positions available to them after Mueller’s self-immolation, the NeverTrump people really don’t. All they have left now is the fact that they don’t like they guy. Period. They have burned what little credibility they ever had to the ground in fluffing the Mueller investigation and if anything was more damaging to them than the Mueller book it was the Mueller movie.

Where do they go from here? It will be totally unsurprising the see outlet that bill themselves as conservative churning out “the conservative case for Pete Buttigieg” articles. One place they should never be allowed to go again is inside the GOP or any organization that considers itself conservative.

Watch: Publix Video Shows Confrontation Escalated Quickly – But Is At Odds With How Erica Thomas Described It

Ga. State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) in a screen grab from a Publix video taken 7/19/19. Via 11 Alive

A video of the confrontation between Georgia resident and Cuban-American Democrat Eric Sparkes and Georgia State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) inside a Publix grocery store was released Wednesday, providing more details in a case that has stoked racial divisions over allegations by Thomas that Sparkes told her to “go back to where she came from.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

A Publix surveillance video of the incident released Wednesday showed a confrontation that lasted roughly 45 seconds. It did not include audio, so it provided no conclusive evidence of what was said, but it showed Sparkes walk up to Thomas as she was checking out in the express lane and apparently point to the sign.

He quickly retreated as Thomas responded and took a step in his direction. She then followed him a few more steps as he walked away, pointing a finger at him.

The officer who reviewed the tape wrote that Sparkes “did not appear to be irate” or to have approached her with “clenched fists,” as Thomas asserted to the officer. He also wrote that Thomas’ 9-year-old daughter was seen “smiling shortly after.”

Watch video of the incident below:

While indeed there is no audio on the videotape, at least one witness told police that it was Thomas who told Sparkes to “go back to where you came from” multiple times. That same witness said they did not hear Sparkes say that to Thomas.

Another Publix employee said he heard Sparkes call Thomas the “b” word but did not hear him say “go back to where you came from.”

I rewatched the Facebook Live Thomas did on Friday an hour before she filed a police report. She said *multiple times* on the video that Sparkes told her to “go back to where you came from.” On Saturday, she backtracked:

In her Facebook video, she also said her daughter was crying during the incident and asking why Sparkes was saying those things. But in the Publix video released Wednesday, not once did you see Thomas, who is 9 months pregnant and was wearing a Planned Parenthood t-shirt, turn to speak to her daughter about what was happening, even after Sparkes had left the store and she went back to finish checking out.

Thomas did, however, pull her daughter into her Facebook live video about halfway through to say she felt “sad” about what happened and that she had wanted to do something about it but couldn’t because she knew she’d “get in trouble.”

In her Facebook video, Thomas indicated she was in fear for her life and didn’t know what to do. She said on Twitter that her husband wasn’t around to defend her because he was in the military and was deployed.

But in the Publix video, it’s very clear that she was not in fear for her life and took control of the situation very quickly after Eric Sparkes approached her (not with his hands “clenched” as she originally asserted) and pointed to the sign about 10 items in the express lane. In fact, she practically chased him out of the store.

In her Facebook video, she complained towards the end about the fact that no one stepped in to help her in spite of the fact that several people including two Publix employees were standing nearby. After watching the Publix video, it’s clear that she didn’t need anyone to intervene, that she aggressively went after Sparkes and kept pointing at the door for him to leave. At one point during the video you can see a store manager ushering Sparkes out. If I was a customer standing nearby, I would not have intervened, either. It looked like she was about to lunge for him.

As I wrote yesterday, Sparkes should never have walked over to her and confronted her about the express lane issue. Things like that you just need to let go. But he did. But just because he wanted to play express lane monitor was no excuse for her to embellish the situation the way she did and give a portrayal of how things happened that is at odds with what the actual video shows.

Also, during the Facebook live video, Thomas compared her situation to the “send [Rep. Ilhan Omar] back” chants that started during a Trump rally in North Carolina last week. Ironically, the man she says was mimicking those chants actually condemned the chants and Trump’s controversial tweets about the Squad on Facebook last week:

After watching the video and reading the police reports, it’s clear why the Cobb County PD decided not to file any charges. It’s also even more understandable now why Eric Sparkes is considering filing a defamation lawsuit against Thomas.

Thomas has a right to shop in peace. She also has a right to defend herself if confronted. She does not, however, have the right to defame another person by saying things that are at odds with how the situation actually played out.

The Media Has A Narrative To Tell, But More And More It Is Becoming Fiction

Westlake Legal Group EricaThomasEricSparkes-620x345 The Media Has A Narrative To Tell, But More And More It Is Becoming Fiction News National media bias Media journalism Georgia Front Page Stories Featured Story fake news Erica Thomas bias Allow Media Exception

Ga. State Rep. Erica Thomas (D) and Georgia resident Eric Sparkes (D). Screen grab via WSB-TV.

We can pretty much guarantee that, as far as the saga of Erica Thomas goes, the coverage has officially ended.

Yesterday, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reported that a witness had come forward saying it was Thomas who verbally attacked Eric Sparkes and that she is the one who said “Go back where you came from.” It could very well be that, for lying to the police, Thomas could become the next Jussie Smollett, but it is more likely that this quietly goes away.

Thomas’s story, however, is a story that has become all-too-familiar in the last three years. The media, which has experienced a sudden revival in its urge to question authority and hold it accountable, has lept on every narrative that has proven just how bad Donald Trump is for our country and how toxic his presence has been.

CNN had to retract an entire story filled with made-up accusations about Trump associates. BuzzFeed has not retracted a story saying Michael Cohen told the special counsel Trump ordered him to lie to Congress, but Mueller’s office flat-out denied it and the claim appeared nowhere in Mueller’s report. Those two stories are no longer referred to by anyone, instead having been completely wiped from the memory of most in our media.

As soon as it was revealed that the kids from Covington Catholic did not stop a Native American man and verbally assault him, the story disappeared. People remember the division that came with Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, but few recall the number of frankly laughable accusations made by activists and pushed by attention-seeking media figures like Michael Avenatti. We conveniently that certain outlets reported on intelligence dossiers that were outright salacious tabloid fodder at best.

All of this has been put out since Trump took office, all with the underlying narrative of “Trump Is Toxic, Part One Thousand” and all had one trait in common: They were too good to be true.

It would have been absolutely perfect to the narrative had a bunch of Catholic school white boys wearing MAGA hats berated a person of color. It would have been outstandingly convenient if the pee tape were real. It would have just beautifully fit if Kavanaugh had sexually assaulted a number of women and the accusations came out right as he was up for nomination to the Supreme Court.

Too perfect. Every last story.

Our media operates under the theory of Agenda Setting. In the communications world, the theory is that mass media’s job is to set the agenda, the discussion points for the day, and that the rest of the media world would follow, trickling down until it was in the homes of every American who consumed the news. This theory, as it is practiced, assumes that CNN and the Washington Post and New York Times will start the day with what they feel is the most important topic of the day and everyone would follow.

To an extent, this theory does hold true. People on the left see the headlines and, usually, nod in agreement that this is truly the important thing to focus on. What they are really agreeing on is the angle with which the story is written – most aggressive is the angle that every story somehow, some way ties to Trump – and they will share the links approvingly.

People on the right, then, see the angle and they say “Why are you looking at it like this?” and they point out the obvious bias inherent in these angles (maybe, just maybe, Trump really has nothing to do with some of these issues, and maybe there isn’t always tumult in the White House whenever someone leaks something). So, writers and journalists on the right will then shift the focus of their audience to what they feel the priorities should be.

As you can guess, the result is the natural polarization of what the top stories should be and how they should be covered.

Erica Thomas’s story should not go away. It should be followed through until the end. She is a Democratic politician, a person in power, making her (theoretically) a person journalists should cover with scrutiny. That scrutiny, however, is far more likely to be saved for a time when a Republican does something similarly stupid.  Thomas should be out of a legislative job, and she should be encouraged by her party to just go ahead and sit it out for a long, long time. She won’t be, much like Virginia Governor Ralph Northam won’t be held accountable for wearing blackface and Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax won’t be for sexual assault allegations (those are two more stories that got nowhere near the coverage a Republican in similar situations would have gotten).

But, by all means, let us continue to run with stories that fit ever so neatly into preconceived notions, almost all of which have been debunked by this point because the reporting was sloppy. Journalists went into a story knowing how they wanted it to go and ignored key facts along the way that didn’t fit their ideas. It is journalistic malpractice, but it will keep happening with no real repercussions against anyone who commits these sins again (and again and again).

So, when you see journalists online getting mad over the term “fake news” being thrown around in a joking manner, remember that they themselves coined the term and then proceeded to literally write and promote stories that were actually fake news ever since. Until they learn their lessons from these stories, they will continue to earn the moniker for the remainder of Trump’s two terms.

In an interview published by Variety Tuesday, actor/comedian David Spade revealed just how utterly woke he is. And by “woke,” I mean awake — to the world around him.

David clearly isn’t wholly blinded by a Hollywood bubble. He knows what most civilians well realize: that America is comprised of people with all sorts of viewpoints. That both the Left and the Right are in any given audience.

Judging from comments made by many in Tinseltown, there are more than a few who fail to notice this.

Discussing his upcoming late-night talk show — which will consist of a monologue, a panel of guests, and on-location pieces — the SNL alum explained it will focus on pop culture rather than the politics which seem to rule much of contemporary night-time talkies.

To quote Revelation, “Here is wisdom:”

“I don’t want half the crowd tuning me out.”

Nicely done!

He went on to say he’s “just not that smart,” and that “there are other guys doing it better.”

“I still like to make fun of everyone and what they are doing,” Spade explained, “but it’s more good-natured.”

I like it.

And he’s right: Nothing’s wrong with a bit of ribbing of our elected leaders; but when a show turns into a national political party’s convention — as many appear to with regularity — for a portion of the butts in the seats, the train’s substantially derailed.

Joe Dirt continued:

“When people do things, I think it’s fair game to make a few jokes, and then you move on — not too personal, of course.”

He made things similarly clear to The Daily Mail recently:

“The country is going to work or not work without me involved. So I will stay away and let all the other celebrities handle fixing that. At this point, it would be just piling on.”

David wants to offer “a non-political fun show.”

Sounds fantastic.

Lights Out with David Spade debuts on Comedy Central July 29th after The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Check it out if you want something different than the regular ranting rigmarole.

Fauxtrage Alert: Concern Trolls Try to Bust Forever 21 for Fat-Shaming, Get Hit With a Reality Check Instead

Forever 21 just can’t seem to stay out of the headlines this week.

On Tuesday, several journalists blasted the clothing store for selling biker shorts that had the words “Fake News” all over them:

As of this writing, the company has not responded to the complaints on Twitter, and the shorts are still available on their website but only in the size XS (extra small).

Yesterday, the store was hit with another wave of complaints, this time from people accusing them of “fat-shaming.” Why? Because a few plus-sized customers wrote on Twitter that they got Atkins diet bars with their recent clothing orders.

Check out some of the tweets posted:

There were many more tweets along those lines.

The comments to some of the top tweets on the “issue” included reporters from national TV shows like “Inside Edition” and local news affiliates for ABC, Fox, etc. who were asking the Twitter users for permission to use their stories – and in some cases, they asked them for interviews. Everyone wanted to get in on the outrage and amplify the voices of those who were “offended.”

Shape magazine wrote a piece about it, the left wing Mary Sue website was really upset about it, and the feminists at Jezebel didn’t waste any time joining the chorus.

It was like watching the outrage machine blow up in real time.

The only problem is the Atkins bars weren’t just sent to plus-sized customers. They were sent to all customers who had online orders, including those who ordered jewelry and other non-clothing items:

The store confirmed it was a marketing partnership in a statement issued to multiple news outlets:

“From time to time, Forever 21 surprises our customers with free test products from third parties in their e-commerce orders. The freebie items in question were included in all online orders, across all sizes and categories, for a limited time and have since been removed. This was an oversight on our part and we sincerely apologize for any offense this may have caused to our customers, as this was not our intention in any way.”

I should note that In Style magazine did the right thing by putting an update to their piece at the top of the story page (which included the store’s statement). In Shape‘s and Jezebel‘s pieces on this story, they noted the update underneath their respective articles at the bottom of the page, where not many people will see it. The Mary Sue piece has not been updated at all.

Shameful.

This is one of the many problems with outrage culture and online mobs: People don’t wait for the facts. Someone posts something seemingly outrageous on social media, and then a bunch of people start piling on. Then broadcast journalists and other writers get involved and want access to the “outrageous” stories being told.

All before knowing what the full story actually is. And by the time it is known, it’s too late. The damage is done.

I wish I could predict with confidence that this will one day stop, but I know it won’t. Social media has made it too easy for online mobs of people with nothing better to do to stir up the hornet’s nest.

A few days ago, I opined that today’s hearings with Robert Mueller before Congress would be a total dud. I said that nothing worthwhile would come from them. I also, even though I didn’t write it at the time, felt that Mueller would likely come in and be sharp, able to deflect questioning with some semblance of skill while sticking to his report.

I was wrong. Today was not a dud. It was an abject disaster for Robert Mueller and the Democrats

We actually learned a lot. For instance, that Mueller was simply a figurehead who had very questionable knowledge of his own report. He didn’t know who Fusion GPS was. He claimed the Steele dossier, which was directly related to Russian election interference, was “outside” his purview. We also learned that Mueller is not the sharp edged, ruthless prosecutor he’s been built up as. In fact, he presented himself as a man not in control of all his faculties. He stammered, constantly complained he couldn’t hear, repeated himself, got confused multiple times, and contradicted his own past statements.

In essence, Robert Mueller made the case today, inadvertently, that Republicans have been making for years.

It wasn’t just Republicans pointing out how bad this was for Democrats and Mueller though. Here’s Laurence Tribe, a crazed Trump opponent who’s never met a conspiracy theory he wasn’t willing to fluff. Today’s outcome was even too much for him to spin.

Tribe is right in a sense. This was a disaster and it did certainly set back the efforts to get Donald Trump, but that’s precisely because the rule of law was recognized. Republican members of the committees, in what was a pretty shocking display of competence, actually did an incredible job at exposing Mueller and his investigation for what it was. Some examples were shared on RedState earlier today, such as Matt Gaetz grilling Mueller on the Steele dossier and Jim Jordan evicerating Mueller on not charging Joseph Mifsud for lying to the FBI.

Things were so bad for Mueller and the Democrats that even MSNBC had to admit it.

They’d eventually get Rachel Maddow on the phone to sooth their souls with more conspiratorial nonsense, but for a moment, even the most anti-Trump forces in the media saw the writing on the wall.

This is over.

The American people do not care about this issue and every minute the Democrats spend continuing to push it is only going to hurt their case in 2020. Adam Schiff can continue to lie to to voters but no one is even paying attention to him anymore. It has reached the point where all of the machinations appear pathetic and contrived.

Two things died today. One, Democrat hopes of getting the ball rolling on impeachment are over. Perhaps more surprisingly though is the death of the myth of Robert Mueller. He was supposed to be the finest, smartest, fairest among us. SNL sang Christmas songs to him and liberal sites sold prayer candles bearing his image. Establishment Republicans assured us of his honor and ability. In the end, Mueller himself was revealed to be a sham. He wasn’t even in control of his own investigation, nor did he show any capacity to lead it.

The former special prosecutor refused to answer questions 198 times today, mostly about things he inexplicably refused to investigate, including the origins of the investigation, as well as possible conspiracy between the Democrats and foreign actors (i.e. Hillary Clinton and Christopher Steele). This wasn’t a sharp, forceful investigator on display. This was a man out of his depth, cowering and unable to answer the most basic inquiries.

Worse, Mueller’s actions were contrary to everything we’ve been assured about our justice system.

I’ve seen some Republicans of a certain stripe opine that today wasn’t necessary. That there was no reason to go hard on Mueller. I completely disagree. Today was absolutely necessary. After three years of this nonsense, there needed to be a reckoning. Every inconsistency, double standard, and partisan bias needed to be laid bare. The ridiculous canard of impeachment needed to not just be countered, but destroyed.

Towards the end of the hearings, I was actually starting to feel sorry for Robert Mueller. This was a man who never should of been given the position he was in. Regardless, there was a certain cosmic justice to this entire thing blowing up the face of the Democrats. They’ve led a witch hunt (and continue to lead one) for years that has culminated in vast nothingness. That deserved to be exposed and exposed it was.

Perhaps this will serve as a lesson to prevent future overreach? We know it won’t though. News rooms across America are busy, desperately trying to spin the dumpster fire that happened today into some kind of liberal victory, but don’t be gaslit. This was a total disaster for Robert Mueller and the Democrats.

New Theory Among Some Conservatives: Mueller May Not Have Written His Report

Special counsel Bob Mueller appeared disoriented and often under-informed while testifying before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees Wednesday, prompting some leading conservatives to wonder just how much of a hand he had in writing his own report.

In a piece at Human Events, Mueller’s general unfamiliarity with portions of the report, and his unwillingness to admit that Fusion GPS and Christopher Steele were key elements in determining the level of Russian interference in the 2016 election, were detailed at length. The writer then posed this question:

[G]iven Mueller’s inability to answer so many questions, and his lack of familiarity with the report itself, the question must now be asked: Who DID write the Mueller report?

The ex special counsel refused to be drawn on who was fired from his team of lawyers — of whom many happened to donate over $60,000 in total to Hillary Clinton and Democrat candidates. He refused to elaborate on the actions and firings of Peter Strzok and Lisa Page — the FBI lovers who pledged to bring down Donald Trump. He didn’t even want to get into how his team was picked.

All of these details are pertinent to the $25m investigation, paid for by the U.S. taxpayer, which has driven a wedge through the nation for two years and the contents of which have hampered the U.S. government for three.

But the question must be answered: who wrote the Mueller report, and why have the shadowy, intelligence figures lurking in the background of this entire saga been left unchallenged?

Give what we already know about the anti-Trump bias of high-ranking officials within the intelligence apparatus, who actually authored Mueller’s report is an important — if unlikely to be answered —question.

Mueller himself sidestepped the question of other report authors when questioned Wednesday by committee members, saying he couldn’t get in to those details (the same response he gave when asked about Fusion GPS and Christopher Steele). All of this led former Rep. Trey Gowdy to make perhaps the best statement regarding the theatrics Wednesday on in Washington, DC: the person who learned the most about the Mueller report during Wednesday’s congressional testimony was Bob Mueller.

With Mueller’s Testimony, Dems Blew Their 2020 Juice

In terms of political strategy, today’s testimony from Robert Mueller decimated the Democrats’ main narrative for the 2020 election cycle. As many RedState contributors have noted, Mueller’s performance was horrible. He seemed to not comprehend a number of questions, was either inept or extremely forgetful, and it was clear that he was not the main author of the report. Though Nancy Pelosi and her bumbling sidekicks are at this very moment promising that an impeachment inquiry must happen, Streiff correctly posited that that dream is over.

Perhaps worse for the Democrats, they can no longer use the Mueller investigation/report/Russia hoax as the drum they beat throughout the 2020 election cycle. It was a massive miscalculation and broke the rule any attorney knows by heart: Unless you’re 100 percent confident about what the answer will be – and it’s one which serves your case – don’t ask the question.

By asking the questions, Democrats took away the unknown. They took away the, “Well, the DOJ and Trump are keeping us from knowing what Mueller really knows, and you have to elect us to keep this bad orange man from literally destroying the world!” narrative. The entire country has now seen that it’s a politically-driven nothingburger.

To be sure, since the Democrats now control the House they had to do something to force Mueller to testify. The Squad and the Justice Democrats wing of the party forced that course of action. Now, they essentially must press forward on impeachment since the Mueller Report punted to Congress. If they don’t press forward on impeachment, they’re essentially admitting they know that everything they’ve said for the past two and a half years is bulls**t. With a number of Dems in swing districts unable to vote for impeachment, even that will likely fail, and will only make the shriekers look even more unhinged.

At one time it seemed like the GOP had a monopoly on the ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, but the Squad-driven Democrat party is giving them a run for their money.

Poor Beto O’Rourke.

He launched his campaign 4 months ago in a blaze of glory, but outside of having a decent fundraising haul in the first few weeks, his polling numbers have languished in the basement.

He’s had a series of missteps, went on an apology tour of sorts to apologize for being white, and attendance at his campaign rallies has been nothing like the glory days of when he ran against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in 2018.

Last night, he appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and he was asked about some really important issues like his love of music and how he once had a trampoline on his roof when he lived in Brooklyn.

He was also asked about Cruz.

When the subject turned to the upcoming Democratic debates, Meyers brought up how hard it must be for O’Rourke to differentiate himself from the 20+ candidates who are currently running. He asked the former El Paso Congressman if he missed how easy it was to distinguish himself from Cruz. Here’s what O’Rourke said:

“Very rarely uttered and yet here we are,” Meyers joked in response.

Watch that segment from the interview below:

Sen. Cruz caught wind of Beto’s quip, and one-upped him in a big way:

Translation: You didn’t just run against me, buddy. You lost. You know where to find me.
