Unless you’ve been in a coma for the past three days you know the story.
On Sunday, President Trump took to Twitter to tell The Squad that if they didn’t like it here in America (and it is blatantly obvious that at least three of them loathe America and its way of life), then perhaps they should decamp to the Third World sh** hole of their choice.
Let’s pause for a musical interlude (h/t to Archer01 for the reminder) and recall that telling people to get the hell out of here if they don’t like it is not something that is particularly new to American politics.
Immediately, Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the NeverTrumpers and assorted weak and fearful Republicans were finding the tweets racist (I’m not really sure which race they are referring to, you only have five). There are things you can criticize the tweets for, but, in my view, it isn’t racist to tell someone that if you don’t like it here, find an place more amenable to your aesthetic. Perhaps someplace with no water and flyblown corpses festooning the landscape.
Just a short while ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was button-holed by some media types and they asked him about the brouhaha:
This reminds me of the old Jon Stewart skit
We have gotten to a point where you can’t disagree or mock anyone on the left without being accused of some form of -ism or -phobia against which all right thinking people should unite. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the little Maduro fan girl, actually hinted that Nancy freakin Pelosi was racist for saying she wasn’t all that. The good thing about that is that most America seems to have wised up to the game and recognize that calling someone racist (or sexist or homophobic or whatever) is simply a cheap attempt to shut down a conversation that the listener doesn’t want to take place.
There are very real questions about the degree to which Tlaib and Omar and Ocasio-Cortez are actually loyal to this country and whether they will operate in this country’s best interests/ Pressley, it seems to me, is more of a garden variety racebaiter who doesn’t fit in all that well with the other three but who is tagging along for the press clippings. You may not like what Trump said but not liking it does not make it racist.
