The Case For Trump’s Tariffs on Mexico; A Shakeup Will Bring Short Term Pain, But Long Term Gain

News of President Trump’s proposed tariffs on Mexican goods delivered a shock to politicians on both sides of the aisle and sent financial markets into a tailspin on Friday.

On Thursday evening, the President tweeted that starting “June 10th, the U.S. will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP. The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied…” then adding “….at which time the tariffs will be removed. Details from the White House to follow.”

And follow they did. The White House issued a statement that said:

If the illegal migration crisis is alleviated through effective actions taken by Mexico, to be determined in our sole discretion and judgment, the Tariffs will be removed. If the crisis persists, however, the Tariffs will be raised to 10 percent on July 1, 2019.

Tariffs will be increased to 15 percent on August 1, 2019, to 20 percent on September 1, 2019, and to 25 percent on October 1, 2019. Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.

According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the U.S. imported $346.5 billion of goods from Mexico in 2018, a 10.3% jump from the prior year. Imports from Mexico accounted for 13.6% of total U.S. imports last year.

Needless to say, this unexpected move was not received well by many in Washington. There is much “not to like” about it. Clearly, there will be short term pain for American consumers, especially for those whose livelihoods are dependent upon trade with Mexico. It will increase the price of numerous products Americans purchase on a regular basis, from avocados to cars. The measure will also have a dampening effect on U.S. Gross Domestic Product initially.

On the plus side, it certainly got Mexico’s attention, didn’t it? Mexico’s president, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, immediately condemned the tariffs. He issued a statement saying that, Social problems are not resolved with taxes or coercive measures” and “the Statue of Liberty is not an empty symbol.” Tucker Carlson made the point that, “Mexico’s corrupt ruling class believes it is America’s duty to absorb their country’s problems forever.” Actually, much of the world feels the same way.

The Mexican government has for too long ignored the flow of illegals through their country. Recently, illegals have been entering the U.S. at the rate of 100,000 per month. It is hurting our country.

As with most political decisions, there are two unpleasant choices and usually one is worse than the other.

In this case, the first option is to let sleeping dogs lie. We can allow Mexico to continue to ignore, and in some cases, to even assist, the hundreds of thousands of illegals who travel through their country annually to reach the U.S. This choice would ensure that we maintain a positive trading relationship with Mexico and will keep prices of goods at current levels. Additionally, it will not depress short term GDP.

It also means that huge numbers of impoverished South Americans will continue to flow into the U.S. who will expect us to provide them with shelter, food and medical care. Those who can will cast their votes for Democratic candidates who are far more sympathetic to their needs than Republicans.

Tucker Carlson addressed some of the problems we face due to uncontrolled immigration.

For decades, the Mexican government has sent their poor up north to our country. This has allowed their criminal oligarchy to maintain power and get richer, but at great expense to us. In the U.S., it has damaged our communities, ruined our schools, burdened our health care system and fractured our national unity. It has supressed wages for our most vulnerable. It has been a slow motion attack on this country and its affects have been devastating.

Alternatively, we can shake things up by applying some much-needed pressure. We will certainly have to accept some short term financial pain. But Mexico, China and the rest of the world will hear the message that the U.S. will no longer be the world’s doormat.

CNN’s Steve Cortes sums it up perfectly:

If countries want access to the American market, then they must act like responsible partners. America desires peace and prosperity with all nations, but will not be abused. If China wishes to continue as a trade partner, it must cease the systemic theft of our intellectual property, technologies, and cease hacking our critical systems. If Mexico desires real friendship with the United States, including the benefit of selling into the world’s greatest consumer market, then it must share in the burden of confronting this migrant calamity.

Mexico can’t continue to have it both ways.

ICYMI: Another Satirical Classic, Blazing Saddles, Gets the SJW Treatment

Westlake Legal Group TOOTPO-landscape-620x478 ICYMI: Another Satirical Classic, Blazing Saddles, Gets the SJW Treatment Tom Sawyer SJW racism irony Front Page Stories Featured Story Entertainment Blazing Saddles

Cartoon by Barbara Fox

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people it was socially unacceptable to make fun of racist idiots.

And that’s precisely what Mel Brook’s 1974 masterpiece Blazing Saddles does — presents racism in all its myriad forms, nakedly and harshly, so we can laugh at its absurdity and, hopefully, learn a little bit about why it exists at all.

The point of satire is to force people to face things often too uncomfortable to discuss in polite society — like racism — so the fear of its existence can be overcome and the thing itself can be put in a box marked “silly”. That’s not to suggest racism shouldn’t be taken seriously or that there haven’t been very serious repercussions because of the hate it’s inspired. But satire is one tool in the battle, one that defangs to defeat. Much like the kids in the Harry Potter world did when facing the “boggart,” for any millennials who might be reading.

Remember what Harry and the gang did when facing the shapeshifting boggart, who looked like the thing each person feared the most? They turned it into the most ridiculous thing they could summon, causing everyone to laugh at it, at which point the boggart lost the battle because it could no longer inspire fear, only laughter.

Blazing Saddles embraces that same concept.

Here’s Deroy Murdock talking about the film recently following a Fox News segment where a young social justice activist said she found it offensive and racist.

The Library of Congress judged ”Blazing Saddles” “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” in 2006. It was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

This film concerns a black man (Cleavon Little as Sheriff Bart) who overcomes the severe, nearly fatal racial bigotry of a rustic town full of white people, mainly named Johnson.

The only way to present the adversity over which he triumphs is to present the adversity over which he triumphs. This involves the citizens of Rock Ridge very liberally hurling the N-bomb and other ethnic slurs.

“Good morning, Ma’am,” Sheriff Bart says to a sweet-looking, bonnet-wearing elderly woman (Jessamine Milner). “And isn’t it a lovely morning?”

“Up yours, n—-r!” she replies.

The sheriff’s pain is palpable. And the audience feels it, right in their guts.

But Sheriff Bart eventually beats the bad guys, led by state Attorney General Heddy Lamar (“That’s Hedley”), played by Harvey Korman.

The sheriff wins the confidence and authentic frontier affection of those who, days earlier, nearly shot him. And the prejudiced old lady becomes one of his biggest fans.

Across five decades, audiences have appreciated the inspiring moral of this saga: Courage, perseverance, brains, and love can erode hate, just as the Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon from desert stone.

The blatant racist tropes in Blazing Saddles are meant to make the viewer uncomfortable. Because THEY SHOULD make the viewer uncomfortable. And once the trope is there, in all its naked hate, Brooks uses the magic of comedy to make it ridiculous and defeats it.

Mark Twain did the same thing. In “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” Twain intentionally shoved the demeaning use of the n-word in the reader’s face because it was what the foolish characters in Tom Sawyer called the best — and arguably smartest — person in the book. It’s no surprise that book is just as misunderstood as Brooks’ film in a culture that desires to be offended rather than instructed.

But the use of irony is nothing to be afraid of children. Quite often it’s best used when it makes you laugh so you can defeat the thing that scares you most, about yourself, about others, and about the world we live in.

Embrace it.

Robert Mueller Purposely Edited a Phone Call From Trump’s Legal Team to Make It Seem Like Obstruction of Justice

Robert Mueller by DonkeyHotey, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0/Original

This is a pretty big deal.

The issues with Robert Mueller’s report are apparent, especially given his decision to overstep DOJ guidelines and smear those who he had no intention of charging. Part two of the report reads like a roadmap too impeachment, full of insinuations and scatter shot “evidence” that doesn’t actually add up to anything but more speculation.

Mueller’s inability to do his job smacked of political gamesmanship. He winked and nodded at Congress but didn’t have the fortitude to just recommend charges against Trump. There was no regulation stopping him from doing so and in the end, he failed to complete the one task his special counsel was appointed to do.

We did not need Robert Mueller to investigate Facebook trolls or DNC emails. The only reason for his existence was to answer questions of criminality on the President’s part given the supposed conflict of interests at the DOJ. When Ken Starr was tasked with that during the Bill Clinton years, he had the courage to put in his report exactly the laws the former President had broken. Mueller chose not to because he didn’t have the goods but wanted to still leave a negative impression.

The more we learn, the worse Mueller looks and this newest revelation is pretty damning.

Remember a few weeks ago when the media and Democrats thought they had a bombshell based on a voicemail that supposedly showed Trump’s legal team trying to coordinate with Flynn’s legal team after he agreed to cooperate with the government? I wrote at the time what a garbage accusation it was.

Let’s just say that I’m getting tired of being right all the time.

Here’s the original source who caught this.

This is pretty crazy. The report is the size of a moderate length novel but Mueller just had to edit those lines out? And as the media ran crazy with accusations of obstruction of justice and witness tampering, Mueller sat idly by even though he’s been speaking out on other matters.

Those that are still hanging onto a virtuous image of “Saint” Mueller are delusional. This guy is as cunning and manipulative today as he was a decade ago in the Pan Am case.

John Dowd, who’s Trump’s lawyer in the call gave a comment (Techno Frog may lack the coveted blue checkmark, but he’s a legit insider on this stuff).

So there you have it.

Robert Mueller and his team purposely edited a call to remove context and to try to paint something totally innocuous as a sinister attempt at obstructing justice. This is exactly why he does not want to testify and why Democrats are not subpoenaing him. They know he’d get destroyed if forced to defend his report.

If Mueller was willing to do this, what else was he willing to manipulate in his report?

AOC Accuses ICE Agents of Purposely Killing Children Because She’s a Moron

I’m going to break one of my own rules. I normally refrain from name calling in headlines and try to not do it in the body of my articles unless it’s just unavoidable. I.E. calling people idiots, morons, etc.

Let’s call this an unavoidable situation. There is no more of an accurate way to describe this latest nonsense from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez than moronic.

There are so many questions.

First, I’ll note that Jessica Valenti’s link above doesn’t work. While I can’t be sure what it said, what I can guarantee is that her description of what happened is almost certainly not accurate. She’s a dishonest hack and routinely misrepresents matters to push her rabidly pro-abortion views.

Also of note is that at the time that AOC reacted to the tweet, the link was still not working, which means she had no actual context for what she was responding to.

Regardless, AOC is comparing ICE agents having an accidental death happen in their custody to abortion doctors who purposely choose to kill children.

In short, she’s accusing ICE agents of murdering kids.

This harkens back to an episode a few weeks ago when a Democrat Representative made this same argument, accusing DHS of making policy choices with the intention of killing kids. That was quickly swept under the rug and the media completely ignored it. We didn’t even get one fact-check.

Now, we have AOC equating ICE agents with abortionists, asserting they are making the same affirmative decision to end the lives of babies. That’s her words, not my interpretation. She says it’s the “same thing.”

This kind of language is disgustingly vile but not unexpected from someone with very little mental fortitude. It probably never even crossed her mind how illogical her comparison was.

No matter what one thinks of immigration policy as a whole, CBP and ICE are doing everything they can to treat people humanely given the impossible situation at hand. They are not purposely killing anyone and in the rare event someone dies in their custody, accusing them of doing it intentionally is just gross.

Legacy Time: Hillary Clinton Selfishly Uses College Commencement Speech to Talk Mueller and Bash Trump, Facebook

Hillary Clinton speaks at the Hunter College graduation ceremony in NYC. 5/29/19. Screen grab via NBC News.

Students ready to put years of hard work behind them, celebrate their graduation, and get started on their respective career paths were treated to a blatantly political and self-centered commencement speech given by twice failed candidate for president Hillary Clinton on Wednesday.

The Associated Press reports:

Clinton’s bluntly political speech to members of the class of 2019 at Hunter College was delivered at Madison Square Garden hours after Mueller made his first public comments about his probe into election meddling.

Referencing Mueller’s remarks, Clinton said the allegation that Russians had attempted to sway U.S. voters “deserves the attention of every American,” and she condemned Trump for largely dismissing Mueller’s work as a witch hunt.

“What we’ve seen from the administration is a complete refusal to condemn a foreign power who attacked our democracy,” she said. “We’ve got to deal with what has been investigated and reported.”

[…]

“What do we do when people in positions of authority are not held accountable? When they defy requests from Congress? When they spread misinformation online?” the Democrat said, suggesting it was up to the graduates to find solutions to such problems.

Clinton also took a jab at Facebook:

“When Facebook refused to take down a fake video of Nancy Pelosi, it wasn’t even a close call,” Clinton told the graduates. “The video is sexist trash. And YouTube took it down but Facebook kept it up.”

The former presidential candidate then suggested that a message be sent to Facebook to show opposition to the tech giant’s decision, and she warned that the site would be “flooded” with “false and doctored videos” if nothing happens.

Her full speech can be viewed below:

Twitter users called Clinton out for using the speech to air her personal and political grievances instead of making it about the students:

Some Twitter users pointed out something I noticed, too: Some of the graduates sitting behind Clinton looked visibly bored and agitated:

As I’ve written before when she’s made similar remarks, it’s just really rich to see her of all people complaining about people in positions of authority not being held accountable, especially when you consider how Clinton herself managed to avoid indictment in 2016 in spite of all the evidence against her as it related to her email server scandal.

Clinton’s rationale for continuing to bang the Mueller drum is not just political, it’s personal – very personal. Her loss to Trump in 2016 had to be devastating to her. Very embarrassing, too, considering she was a “sure thing” if you listened to so-called political experts and polling gurus.

Some have called the investigation into Russian interference a “coup attempt” against Trump, but for Hillary, the investigation has been a way for her to soothe her bruised ego over the fact she was defeated. She’s convinced herself that without the interference she would have won the election.

The students at Hunter College deserved a speech that was centered around them, their accomplishments, and their futures, not a political bashfest with insinuations about what could have been for her in 2016. Clinton’s defenders will call this her greatest speech ever, but in reality this was not a good look for her. Not good a good look at all.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) has some things to say about the way both Robert Mueller and Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) have treated President Donald Trump as of late, and he appeared on Fox Business on Thursday to air some grievances.

“The thing that shocks me is that someone like Mueller, who is supposed to be esteemed and has been around for decades, completely and fundamentally misunderstands our justice system,” said Paul while talking to Stuart Varney.

“The burden on the government is to prove that you’re guilty. Nobody proves that you’re innocent. You’re presumed to be innocent,” he continued. “So he’s out there, all over television, saying, “We never said, we never concluded the president was innocent.” Completely misunderstands our judicial system. You’re presumed to be innocent; they have to prove you’re guilty.”

“He was not charged. He was not indicted, so he is innocent,” he concluded.

Paul went on to say that it’s not right to assume someone is guilty because they never said they were innocent, and that innocence comes with the lack of a guilty verdict. According to Paul, Mueller “completely misunderstands that.”

Varney then turned the conversation toward impeachment, which Paul said would be a complete waste of time and that the people are sick and tired of hearing about it.

According to polls, he’s not wrong.

However, you can’t bring up the impeachment of Trump without bringing up the recent calls for it by Amash. Paul wondered aloud why a libertarian like Amash would want to support an investigation undertaken by the secret FISA court going after Americans:

So I don’t understand a libertarian who would take this investigation and say we should pursue it and impeach the president. It goes against everything libertarians are for. We don’t like too much power. We don’t like the secret FISA court going after Americans. Foreigners are one thing, but always we’ve been very concerned about the FISA court being used against Americans. So I’ve been talking with the president. I spoke with him last night about how do we try to prevent this from happening to the next president or to the Americans at large? I think the president is open to trying to figure out a way, either legislatively or through executive order, we can try to prevent this abuse of power from happening again.

Remember indentured servitude from History class?

If not, here’s somethin’ from Encyclopedia Virginia:

Indentured servants were men and women who signed a contract (also known as an indenture or a covenant) by which they agreed to work for a certain number of years in exchange for transportation to Virginia and, once they arrived, food, clothing, and shelter. Adults usually served for four to seven years and children sometimes for much longer, with most working in the colony’s tobacco fields. With a long history in England, indentured servitude became, during most of the seventeenth century, the primary means by which Virginia planters filled their nearly inexhaustible need for labor.

As per USHistory.org:

Upon completion of the contract, the servant would receive “freedom dues,” a pre-arranged termination bonus. This might include land, money, a gun, clothes or food.

And more, courtesy of PBS.org:

While the life of an indentured servant was harsh and restrictive, it wasn’t slavery. There were laws that protected some of their rights. But their life was not an easy one, and the punishments meted out to people who wronged were harsher than those for non-servants.

For those that survived the work and received their freedom package, many historians argue that they were better off than those new immigrants who came freely to the country. Their contract may have included at least 25 acres of land, a year’s worth of corn, arms, a cow and new clothes.

Got it? Now let’s go to History Professor Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

At an event hosted by Restaurant Opportunities Centers United in order to promote a higher minimum wage via the One Fair Wage Act, AOC worked for a bit as bartender Friday.

The Act would, it should be noted, prohibit tipped workers from being paid less than the federal hourly minimum.

ROC reports table-waiters can currently be paid as low as $2.13/hr — an amount, it claims, that hasn’t changed since 1991.

Here are the New York freshman representative’s words to the crowd:

“Any job that pays $2.13 an hour is not a job. It’s indentured servitude.”

I believe it’s safe to assume she doesn’t own an Encyclopedia Virginia.

Sometimes, I genuinely wonder: Has she ever, at any time, made any statement of knowledge that was accurate?

I digress.

Or do I?

43 states allow for two minimum wages. The federal minimum is $7.25 per hour. Many states adhere to something higher. This week, Connecticut passed a bill to raise it to $15 by 2023.

Some Democrats want to make that the national low by 2024 via their Raise the Wage Act. It boasts more than 180 co-sponsors, including Nancy Pelosi, Bernie Sanders, and Chuck Schumer.

I could write here about the ramifications of raising the cost of business, the workings of supply and demand, etc. But you already know all of those. Unfortunately, (most of) you weren’t recently granted a seat in Congress.

But that’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for ya (here, here, here, and here). It follows my much-lamented, referenced contemporary political M.O.: Say things that sound powerful, whether they make any sense or not (here).

Politic on, AOC.

There’s a Huge Difference In What We Die From and What the Media Reports that We Die From

Westlake Legal Group terrorism-shutterstock-620x396 There’s a Huge Difference In What We Die From and What the Media Reports that We Die From Terrorism Television News Media homicide graph Google Front Page Stories Featured Story disease death cancer Allow Media Exception

The media sensationalizes, but that’s not necessarily uncommon knowledge. This is the age of click bait and breaking news that’s “breaking” for some reason. Fox News can’t switch to camera three without the breaking news animation playing and reading headlines on websites is like listening to your overdramatic friend begin a story.

The problem is that the media tends to sensationalize things that shouldn’t be sensationalized, and puts little emphasis on the things that actually are in our best interests to know about. One of those things is what we actually die from.

According to OurWorldInData.org, the things that kill us are oftentimes underreported by the media. This, in turn, may even affect our Googling habits, making the things that kill us go unnoticed. The site gives examples:

  • around one-third of the considered causes of deaths resulted from heart disease, yet this cause of death receives only 2-3 percent of Google searches and media coverage;

  • just under one-third of the deaths came from cancer; we actually google cancer a lot (37 percent of searches) and it is a popular entry here on our site; but it receives only 13-14 percent of media coverage;

  • we searched for road incidents more frequently than their share of deaths, however, they receive much less attention in the news;

  • when it comes to deaths from strokes, Google searches and media coverage are surprisingly balanced;

  • the largest discrepancies concern violent forms of death: suicide, homicide and terrorism. All three receive much more relative attention in Google searches and media coverage than their relative share of deaths. When it comes to the media coverage on causes of death, violent deaths account for more than two-thirds of coverage in the New York Times and The Guardian but account for less than 3 percent of the total deaths in the US.

A handy chart was made so you can get more of a visual representation of the information, which I’ve posted below.

As you can see, what we Google is actually more accurate to what really kills us than what the media tends to focus on. The media is far more interested in reporting on homicides (shootings, police actions, crime, etc), and reports on it around 23 percent of the time. However, things like cancer take a back seat. With 28 percent of people dying as a result of it, you’d figure the media would be more interested in talking about it, but it only covers it around 13 percent of the time.

When we’re left alone to find our own news, we tend to search for cancer far more often, with 37 percent of our searches

Oddly enough, the thing that kills us the most takes a back seat in searches and reporting. Heart disease kills us the most at 30 percent, yet our searches and the media give it around 2 percent of our attention. Meanwhile, terrorism kills us the absolute least, yet the media gives us an inordinate amount of news about it.

According to OurWorldInData.com, this has given us a skewed vision of reality and gives us the idea that our world is far more horrible than it is:

Media and its consumers are stuck in a reinforcing cycle. The news reports on breaking events, which are often based around a compelling story. Consumers want to know what’s going on in the world — we are quickly immersed by the latest headline. We come to expect news updates with increasing frequency, and media channels have clear incentives to deliver. This locks us into a cycle of expectation and coverage with a strong bias for outlier events. Most of us are left with a skewed perception of the world; we think the world is much worse than it is.

There was very little doubt Trump would run for a second term. Some of his critics on the right perhaps held out hope he’d decide not to and Mitt Romney would come riding in on a white horse, but nah. We are never going back there and it’s probably time for some to accept it.

Today, the President formally announced his re-election campaign, or better yet, he announced his coming announcement of his re-election campaign.

While I’m normally not too in to watching Trump rallies (dude’s hilarious but it’s a bit repetitive), this one is going to be grade A entertainment given its context. There’s no telling what the dude will say.

Another thing to note is that an important question appears to have been answered.

It looks like VP Pence is along for the ride again. While Trump running was a forgone conclusion, there had been some chatter that Pence might not be on the ticket again and that it would be beneficial to replace him with someone else.

I can see both sides. On the one hand, it’d be crappy to dump him as he’s not done a bad job. On the other hand, Pence adds basically nothing to the campaign. I think evangelicals are already with Trump regardless and that’s Pence’s only real draw. He reminds me of Tim Kaine running with Hillary in the sense that he’s just an after thought. A woman or someone from a swing state would be very valuable in what will be a grueling campaign.

Regardless, what’s done is done. Trump is the guy moving forward and Pence will be at his side. No pipe dream primary challenges are going to derail their path to the general election. If I’m Trump, I don’t even engage with whatever nut job Bill Kristol and company decide to put forward.

Given something unforeseen, it looks like June 18th is going to officially kick off the 2020 election season. Buckle your seatbelts. It’s going to be an insane year and a half.
