Westlake Legal Group Klobuchar Failing Democrat Follies Continue – Did Amy Klobuchar Just Dismember Smokey Bear?!?! Media Front Page Stories Featured Story democrats Campaigns Amy Klobuchar Allow Media Exception 2020 campaign 2020

From Twitter account @amyklobuchar

The Not-Ready-For-Primetime candidates continue to deliver the comedy.

The ever-growing field of Democrats (yes, still: Tom Steyer now wants to join the hoedown) means that interest for individuals is diluted, polling percentages are at a premium and the desire for notice borders on desperation. Candidates are eager to do almost anything to get some form of traction with voters.

This means that many are willing to do/say/project anything to distinguish themselves, and more often it delivers comedy. Look at Liz Warren trying to seem natural while drinking a beer. There is Kirsten Gillibrand at a gay pride party sipping a shot of liquor. And Duke Nuke’em himself, Eric Swalwell, is a perpetual gaffe machine as he panders to any group in his crosshairs.

That staffers for these hopefuls do not always take an editorial eye to some of the social media output may be a sign of their yearning for any instant exposure. Instead of pausing to ask about optics and impressions of their offerings it is a rush to put anything and everything up on accounts. The need to stay relevant supersedes decorum. Take Amy Klobuchar as the latest example.

The Minnesotan has desperately needed to be noticed in the crowded herd, and so her recent Twitter post shows this rashness on full display. She met up with an individual at a recent parade event and thought she had captured a prime candid moment to reveal her true side. Instead, this was the result.

The most apathetic viewer would have to regard this as appearing as though she is standing over the felled remains of Smokey Bear. She appears less a community member than a hunter posing over her trophy kill. We get that she wanted to show support for a citizen volunteer, but maybe the dismembered ursine image was not the way to go?!

Now factor in that Amy is still battling the stories of her venomous treatment of her staffers, and then this hoped-for sweet moment becomes transformed into something else entirely.

Then you also take into consideration that her hastily-fastened blouse was blatantly askew and the decapitated Kodiak becomes an altogether different image.

For these very reasons, I have been mentioning to those who are bemoaning the length of the campaign and breadth of the field as being a tortuous affair that they need to consider the other possibilities. These desperate souls are going to be a good source of comedy for the months to come.

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Really Doesn’t Want ‘Equal’ Pay (Although I’m Not Sure Their Fans Know That)

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team won the World Cup in spectacular fashion Sunday, beating The Netherlands 2-0 and forcing them to play defense nearly the entire length of the game. It’s a cool story, the ladies tearing up a traditionally male game with guts and talent. It’s a damn shame they’ve wrapped their accomplishment in victimhood and the myth of “equal pay”.

The ladies have certainly been lightening rods. From midfielder Megan Rapinoe’s longstanding dispute with the American flag and anthem, to the ladies’ in-your-face style of sportsmanship (they take that attitude off the field as well), the USWNT has garnered a lot of attention, and not just for their talent (which they indisputably have).

After they won the match Sunday, chants of “equal pay!” broke out from fans in the stands related to the 2016 lawsuit brought by the U.S. women’s soccer team alleging they have generated massive revenue for the U.S. Soccer Federation and soccer in general and should be paid the same as men.

But the fact is, the ladies are given special treatment because the clubs they play with outside of tournament play — which is who pays the men for World Cup tournament play — can’t afford to pay the ladies because they don’t bring in as much money as the men’s clubs. Simple supply and demand.

So the ladies draw a salary from the US Soccer federation to play in tournaments — again, something the men don’t do — and the ladies are paid a salary and bonus even if they don’t play (the men are not).

This Washington Post piece details some of what’s happening, but does a lot of conflating of prize money, ad revenue, and “similarly situated male players.”

The fact is, the ladies are given special treatment to ensure a salary which, by definition, is not equal.

Are the ladies willing to adopt the same pay structure in their quest for “equal” pay? My guess is, no. Because they would be making less money (if they could afford to play at all. Remember, the clubs (which can’t afford to pay them) would be on the hook for paying them).

This Guardian piece from 2016 when the ladies filed suit seeking equal pay — and rightly starts out asking the question: “What is pay?” — explains things better:

[T]he men’s and women’s programs have a few key differences:

  1. International governing body Fifa awards World Cup bonus money on an exponentially different scale: $35m for the last men’s champions, $2m for the women’s.
  2. US men usually get high pay from their professional clubs, while women’s professional soccer is still a low-revenue enterprise in the USA and globally. (Not mentioned in the 60 Minutes report: US Soccer pays salaries for national team players and has supported other costs of the NWSL; spokesman Neil Buethe says the total expenditure has been more than $10m over the league’s four-year history.
  3. The US women receive steady salaries and other benefits the US men do not receive.

If the ladies want to collectively bargain for more ad revenue, that’s reasonable. If they want to ensure equal bonuses for tournament play and make sure their travel accommodations etc. are the same as the men, also reasonable.

But if they want equal pay, they need to equalize the pay structure or their argument is basically trying to have it both ways: getting special treatment to help because they’re women and also getting “equal” pay because they’re women.

And that’s not empowering. It’s just gaming the system.

After Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-MI) appearance on ABC News‘s “This Week” Sunday, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikky Haley had some thoughts.

As I wrote yesterday, Tlaib was interviewed on the program about the border crisis and was specifically asked why she voted against humanitarian aid funding. To recap, here’s how the freshman Congresswoman answered:

She said on Sunday that rather than listen to acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, who appeared on the program before her and denied the accusations, she would listen to the Customs and Border Protection agents she met while touring the detention center.

[…]

“Three agents took me aside, away from my colleagues and said more money is not going to fix this, that they were not trained to separate children,” she said. “That they don’t want to separate two year olds away from their mothers. That’s not what they were trained for, that’s not what they signed up for in their service to our country. They signed up to protect the border, not to separate children, not to put people in cages.”

I noted in my post that Tlaib’s explanations didn’t pass the smell test for multiple reasons, most importantly because Tlaib’s vote against the funding came before her visit to the Texas border detention facility when she was allegedly pulled to the side by CBP agents to discuss the issue.

Haley watched the video of Tlaib’s aggressively defensive, nonsensical answer and called her out, noting the bloviating Congresswoman wasn’t actually interested in solutions:

As it turns out, Haley wasn’t the only prominent female public figure to call out Tlaib’s duplicity on border funding over weekend. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) also took Tlaib to task, along with other “Squad” members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Ilhan Omar (MN), and Ayanna Pressley (MA) for their “no” votes on the aid package. ⁩

“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” Pelosi said per New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd in a Saturday column. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”

WaPo Promotes Federal Gas Tax Hike

“States are doing it. So why hasn’t Congress increased the federal gas tax?” So goes the headline in Saturday’s Washington Post advocating for yet another attempt to pick the pockets of the middle class—and along with them, the minimum wage workers least likely to afford it.

The Post prints a litany of reasons why the Federal Government should raise the gas tax on top of what the states severally, are doing. Here are a couple.

Congress last raised the federal gas tax in 1993, which means that the 18.4-cent-per-gallon levy has fallen more than 40 percent in real terms. That is a rough indication of how much incentive for consumers to drive less, and to drive more fuel-efficient vehicles, thus reducing carbon emissions, Congress has passively forfeited.

These leftists cannot resist using the tax code as a cudgel to sanction behavior they disapprove of, such as driving oneself somewhere without permission from government. Note the language. The leftists simply must promote their climate change scam. What’s worse is how they view your hard earned money. “…Congress has actively forfeited.” Such arrogance. It’s not your money. It’s ours!

The shrinking gas tax is a major reason the Federal Highway Trust Fund has enough money to meet its obligations only through fiscal 2020.

Sorry folks. That’s just false to fact. One reason the so-called, “Federal Highway Trust Fund” is running short of cash is because of the Davis-Bacon Act (David Webb, are you listening?). Davis-Bacon adds 40 percent to any construction project which uses Federal funds. Stay tuned for a follow-up to that particular issue.

The other reason is that no politician, local, state or federal, can resist shoving his snout down into that money trough up to the shoulders. Surprisingly, the Post halfway admits that (emphasis mine)

Obviously, a different political dynamic pertains to federal gas taxes, which are collected more remotely from where they are spent and used for mass transit, as well as roads.

Mass transit, Bike Paths and all sorts of other non Federal Highway projects that take advantage of the slush fund that gas taxes provide fodder for.

The article’s final paragraph contains a truth and a lie all wrapped up together

Yet the states’ experience demonstrates that the American people are open to more rational fuel taxation and that Congress’s old excuses for avoiding it may no longer apply.

Yes, hard-working Americans are willing to pay for their use of the roads. However, what they usually end up getting, is higher taxes and crappy roads. They are certainly tired of their hard-earned dollars being siphoned off to promote the leftist agenda—bike paths and other such nonsense that does little if anything to make their daily commute any better.

A Major Democrat Figure Is About to Join the Race for 2020

Westlake Legal Group 120905_tom_steyer_ap_328 A Major Democrat Figure Is About to Join the Race for 2020 Tom Steyer Politics Money Man Major Figure Major Donor Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story democrats Democratic Party Democrat primary billionaire 2020 Race 2020 Primary

I’ve lost count of the number of people running for President on the Democrat side at this point. It’s well over 20 and we are about to see another name added to the list if new reports pan out.

Billionaire and liberal sugar daddy Tom Steyer is telling allies he’s going to jump into the 2020 Democrat primary and he will reportedly make his announcement tomorrow.

The billionaire investor Tom Steyer, who in the past decade has been both the top Democratic donor in the country and the prime engine for pushing for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, appears ready to become Democratic candidate No. 26. Last week in San Francisco, Steyer told staffers at two progressive organizations he funds, Need to Impeach and NextGen America, that he is launching a 2020 campaign, and that he plans to make the formal announcement this Tuesday.

Politico is reporting the same thing but with a bit more certainty.

Tom Steyer, the billionaire environmental activist who toyed with a 2020 presidential run before deciding against it, has told people he plans to announce that he’s entering the race for the Democratic nomination, according to three people familiar with his plans. Steyer had said in January that he was passing on a 2020 run.

Steyer held a private conference call last week to announce to people who work for Need to Impeach, NextGen America and Steyer’s Sacramento office that he was planning to run, according to one of the people.

Steyer is most famous for putting bags of cash into piles and setting them on fire. He’s been the money man behind a lot of the efforts to impeach Donald Trump and has shown himself to be your typical liberal conspiracy theorist. He was also the money behind Andrew Gillum, who would go on to lose a race he was favored to win in Florida last year. Republican Ron DeSantis proved victorious after a contentious campaign.

Back in January, Steyer had previously claimed that he wouldn’t run for President because he felt what he wanted was already being represented by other candidates, but ego is a funny a thing. He’s apparently reconsidered and wants a piece of the action. The risk for the other Democrats is that Steyer can drop tens of millions on his own campaign without blinking at eye. He can flood the airways and internet with ads, basically buying his way to a high profile in the race. Whether that’ll translate to actual voter support is up for debate.

Steyer’s political views are exactly what you’d expect. He’s a major, major booster of global warming hysteria. His economics are in line with the rest of the Democratic field. Oh, and he hates Donald Trump with the fire of a thousand suns, so that box is checked as well.

I don’t see Steyer doing anything but adding to the chaos. Still, like a demolition derby, there’s something satisfying about watching the carnage.

New Book About Kavanaugh Hearing Reveals Trump Team Had Dirt on Blasey Ford, Astute Observation From Melania

The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway and policy director of the Judicial Crisis Network, Carrie Severino, have collaborated on a book entitled “Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court.”

One of the most fascinating revelations is that Team Trump had “dirt” on Christine Blasey Ford (CBF). However, they feared that if this material was presented during the hearings, it would be viewed negatively. The Trump team “understood that any criticism of Ford would be treated as a smear” and portrayed as “victim shaming.” In the era of #MeToo, they were unwilling to take that risk. If we want to find out knowledge they did have, we’ll have to read the book!

However, statements from some of CBF’s past friends and acquaintances may offer a clue as to the nature of the information. At the time, several came forward with stories about her of love of partying. The tweets below from conservative writer D. C. McAllister gives us a good idea.

Another interesting detail discussed in the book is that, after watching CBF’s testimony against then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh before the Senate Judiciary Committee last fall, First Lady Melania Trump said to the President, “You know that woman is lying, don’t you?”

Melania saw what many other Americans saw.

In “Justice on Trial,” Hemingway and Severino claim that  “millions of other women and men didn’t believe Blasey Ford” and for obvious reasons, this was “underreported by the media…Her credibility, if anything, was viewed as stronger because of her lapses in memory and because the odder parts to the story, such as her description of how she came to tell her husband about the assault. Despite the holes in her story, the media clung to these details.”

Who can forget the childlike, tearful and frumpy Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, whose emotional testimony riveted the nation last year? She claimed she had been sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh  in either the summer of 1981 or 1982 (she wasn’t sure) when they were teenagers. Nor was she sure about whose house it was or where it was.

There was not one shred of corroborative evidence. None of the four witnesses she named as having been at the party have any memory whatsoever of it. I won’t repeat the long list of questions she could not answer about the alleged assault.

Yet the experience left her traumatized for life. She was afraid of flying and of small spaces. For this reason, the Senate confirmation process had to be put on hold while CBF drove from her home in California to Washington, D.C.

A body language expert analyzed CBF’s testimony and believed she’d been acting. She said the only genuine emotion CBF displayed was “fear” and who wouldn’t be afraid to perjure themselves in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on national television? Another interesting point made by the analyst was that CBF had no mucus or no tears. Here is a clip of the analysis:

“Justice on Trial” was written to provide a “behind-the-scenes look at the dramatic Kavanaugh hearings of September and October 2018.”

The New York Post published an excerpt from the book on Sunday which can be viewed here. This excerpt details the role of Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) whose pivotal swing vote was in demand by both sides. According to the book,” her husband was threatened with ricin in a letter addressed to their Maine home…In Washington, Collins’ neighbor said he was troubled that he was living next door to a “rape apologist,” as the Maine Republican tried to apologize for noisy protesters.”

It should be a fascinating read. It was certainly an extraordinary time.

“Justice on Trial”  is scheduled to be released on Tuesday.

Starbucks Apologizes to Police Officers It Disrespected, but Reveal They Don’t Consider It a Big Deal In the Process

Westlake Legal Group rsz_08fa0873-f266-477b-a28b-046a8ee2d76f-620x414 Starbucks Apologizes to Police Officers It Disrespected, but Reveal They Don’t Consider It a Big Deal In the Process tempe Starbucks protest Politics police Front Page Stories Featured Story Business & Economy Arizona Allow Media Exception

Starbucks finally apologized after messing up big on Saturday when it kicked a group of police officers out of its store in Tempe, Arizona.

As my colleague Elizabeth Vaughn wrote on Saturday, the officers routinely visited the starbucks and were getting a coffee before their Fourth of July shift began. Little did they know that they were committing the crime of standing within eyesight of another customer who “did not feel safe” in the midst of the “police presence.” The staff asked the officers to either move out of the customer’s line of site or leave the establishment.

Naturally, it did not go over well with the public, who proceeded to drag it across every coal it could find. This includes the Tempe Officers Association, who even came out with a neat little graphic.

On Sunday, the coffee chain has issued a formal apology as written from its VP of U.S. retail operations, Rossann Williams:

Dear Chief Moir and the entire Tempe Police Department,

Thank you, Chief Moir, for the conversation today. On behalf of Starbucks, I want to sincerely apologize to you all for the experience that six of your officers had in our store on July 4.

When those officers entered the store and a customer raised a concern over their presence, they should have been welcomed and treated with dignity and the utmost respect by our partners (employees). Instead, they were made to feel unwelcome and disrespected, which is completely unacceptable.

At Starbucks, we have deep appreciation for your department and the officers who serve the Tempe community. Our partners rely on your service and welcome your presence, which keeps our stores and the community a safe and welcoming place.

Our strong relationship with the Tempe Police Department has provided us the opportunity to host several “Coffee with a Cop” events in area stores, which bring residents and police together to discuss relevant issues and find common ground. We look forward to continuing to strengthen our relationship with you, and we agree that the experience of your officers requires an important dialogue – one that we are committed to being part of.

What occurred in our store on July 4 is never the experience your officers or any customer should have, and at Starbucks, we are already taking the necessary steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again in the future.

I will be in Tempe this evening and welcome the opportunity to meet with any of you in person to address concerns or questions.

Two things can be true at one time. I’m glad that Starbucks apologized for the behavior of one of its employees toward a group of men who wake up every day, put on a badge and a gun and stand between us and societal chaos. An apology was desperately needed in this situation, and Starbucks did the smart thing by ignoring the SJWs who celebrated the kicking out of the officers, and making it clear that they understand they goofed.

But…

It can also be true that the response seems light compared to apologies it made in the past. It was just last year that two black men were kicked out of a Starbucks for what was perceived as loitering. In response to the outrage, Starbucks said that it would close down its locations in order to train its employees on racial sensitivity and eliminate their “unconscious bias.” As I wrote last April, when this decision was made, “unconscious bias” usually implies that the person being accused of it is racist without his or her knowledge.

Not only was it a useless waste of resources in the name of optics, it was insulting to Starbucks employees who were essentially called racist. Regardless, Starbucks was trying to look good to the SJW community who are never pleased by anything anyway.

Starbucks, so far as has been revealed, has no plans to shut its stores down for a day in order to train its employees to better respect police. Even the big-wig it’s sending to Tempe to speak to the PD is a lower level than the very CEO who flew down to Pennsylvania when the two black men were kicked out. Unlike that incident, kicking out officers doesn’t seem to warrant that level of response.

Starbucks showed its hand here, and I’m not entirely sure the people are going to consider the apology good enough.

Jeffrey Epstein’s Arrest Will Still Not Get Trump Or Clinton Arrested

FILE- In this July 30, 2008 file photo, Jeffrey Epstein is shown in custody in West Palm Beach, Fla. Labor Secretary nominee Alexander Acosta is expected to face questions at his Senate confirmation hearing about an unusual plea deal he oversaw for Epstein, a Florida billionaire and sex offender, as U.S. attorney in Miami. (AP Photo/Palm Beach Post, Uma Sanghvi, File)/Palm Beach Post via AP)

Upon news that Jeffrey Epstein is, once again, headed to court over child sex trafficking charges, social media was all abuzz over what this meant for their preferred political boogeyman.

Both Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, among others, have ties to Epstein – a billionaire with a thing for massages from underage girls – and more than once each side of the political aisle has pointed accusingly at the other, saying “Your guy is really gonna get it now!”, though with way more exclamation points than I feel is appropriate.

Epstein’s last court fight ended in little more than a slap on the wrist, and it appears as though the new charges, which are set to be unsealed Monday, will look a lot like the old charges. Of course, innocent until proven guilty and all that, but the guy does have tons of similar accusations being leveled against him. Far more accusations than could be called a coincidence or a coordinated attack.

It is likely Epstein was up to his coin purse in illicit sexual encounters with young women, and it is likely that, him being a billionaire with some big name contacts, palled aroud with a lot of big names – including Trump and Clinton. You can make the case that either of those two men must be brought down for their friendship with Epstein. However, don’t expect the legal system to take part in the hunt.

The big deal right now is that a scumbag pedophile is going back before the court to try and defend himself. Hopefully, the legal system has its act together this time and will get the scumbag removed from polite society for good. Epstein’s trial, however, is not the place for partisan point-making. Anyone who was party to Epstein’s crimes is fair game. If either Trump or Clinton was indeed involved, they should also be brought before a jury. If they prosecutors feel there is a case, they should make it.

But it is not about politics. It is about what is universally right and universally wrong. Trump and Clinton, both men with personal faults when it comes to women, are likely not going to be brought up in this trial. While we don’t know what evidence the prosecutors have, public knowledge – the tidbits made available via news outlets and public records – does not have enough to truly implicate either.

Most of you reading this will likely try to direct me to any number of stories mentioning Clinton being flown on Epstein’s private jet. Coincidence? Your mileage may vary. Actionable intelligence? Doubtful.

It’s highly unlikely that this trial is going to go beyond the scope of the charges here: Epstein trafficked young – too young – women for sexual purposes. He is a sleazy guy and he has been in some sleazy social circles. But the idea that this is going to become exactly what many of Robert Mueller’s critics said his investigation was – a much-too-broad political witch hunt that went well beyond the scope of the initial concerns of the FBI – seems pretty ridiculous.

Let us set politics aside here and pray that justice for these young women will be found and that a scumbag will finally receive the punishment he so richly deserves. You won’t find political satisfaction here, but not everything needs that. Just hope that justice is done.

World Cup Fans In Lyon, France Bar Chant ‘F*** Trump’ During Fox News Broadcast

Fox News’ Greg Palkot was broadcasting from a sports bar in Lyon, France following the USWNT’s victory over the Netherlands on Sunday afternoon when boisterous patrons began chanting “F*** Trump.” Despite the shouting going on behind him, Palkot soldiered on with his report.

Moveon.org’s senior video producer, Sara Pearl, caught the chant which can be viewed in the tweet below.

Megan Rapinoe, co-captain of the team and outspoken Trump critic, made headlines last month when she was asked, if her team wins the World Cup and receives an invitation to the White House, would she be “excited” to go.

She responded, “I’m not going to the f*****g White House.”No. I’m not going to the White House. We’re not gonna be invited. I doubt it…[Trump] tries to avoid inviting a team that might decline. Or, like he did when the Warriors turned him down, he’ll claim they hadn’t been invited in the first place.”

The Washington Post reported Rapinoe recently said that “just the fact that someone like her can play her way onto the team amounts to “kind of a good ‘F you’ to … the administration.”

President Trump had the grace to put their differences aside and congratulate the team on their victory. “Congratulations to the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team on winning the World Cup! Great and exciting play. America is proud of you all!,” Trump tweeted.

The left found the impromptu chant to be quite amusing and Sara Pearl’s video went viral. She was very excited about that. In the tweet below, she wrote “I feel like this is actually a big f*** you to Trump’s military tank parade hijacking our Fourth of July. Laura Ingraham had a question for those who found this to be so entertaining. She asked, in a tweet: “What would the media/Left’s reaction have been had such a chant ever been directed at Obama in any bar?”

Journalists Jim Stinson and Joel Pollack answered below.

Timing is everything — or so they say. This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to see “1776” (the musical) at the Muny (St. Louis’ outdoor musical theater.) We have season tickets and I usually enjoy the shows they bring each summer. This year, the only title which really caught my eye was “1776.”  I didn’t know much of anything about the show. I’d read David McCullough’s like-titled masterpiece but recognized the musical didn’t derive from that despite the obvious subject matter overlap. A quick scan of the songs failed to reveal any which rang a bell with me. Still, as a history buff and someone who’s always thought the founding of our nation both inspiring and fascinating, this one was a must-see for me.

I wasn’t quite certain what to expect. I’ll confess, I was pleasantly surprised. The story and dialogue were intriguing, engaging, often humorous, sometimes even bawdy. The musical numbers left a little to be desired — none of them were particularly catchy, though having followed up Sunday evening’s theater visit with a viewing of the movie Thursday night, I now have this earworm, thank you very much:

Recognizing that this was a dramatization of the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration, not a documentary, I thought the show still provided an informative and entertaining peek into a momentous event. One that seemingly rankles many Americans on an increasingly virulent basis.

If you’d asked me 10 — perhaps even 5 — years ago whether I thought the founding of our nation and signing of our Declaration of Independence controversial (other than, perhaps, to a few assorted grudge-holding Brits), I’d have thought it quite odd. The notion that fellow Americans might take issue with it would have been unfathomable. What’s to dislike about the freakin’ Declaration of Independence?! Please note: I say this as a former liberal/diehard Democrat. I didn’t become a conservative — or right-leaning moderate depending on whose ire I’m incurring — until my mid-thirties. A child of the ’60s, ’70s, and early ’80s, I nevertheless was raised loving my country, the ideals upon which it was founded, and the story of its founding. I was proud to be an American. And that wasn’t a political statement/sentiment — or, at least, not a partisan one. I never was under the illusion that we were perfect or immune to criticism. But even at my most leftward leaning, I absolutely adored and appreciated “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”  (Side note to AOC: “Home of the free” will suffice, as well, particularly if you’re singing this song:)

So imagine my surprise (I should really get over being surprised, I suppose), when the day following the enjoyable “1776” performance, I caught wind of #BetsyRossGate. As several of my colleagues have covered (here, here, and here), apparently, the flag adopted by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, (a/k/a “The Betsy Ross Flag”), offends the sensibilities of one Colin Kaepernick and thus mustn’t adorn Nike shoes.  Sarah Rumpf reported on the flag kerfuffle here first:

Sneaker giant Nike is apparently willing to flush a significant amount of money down the drain, pulling back already manufactured shoes from retailers, all because Colin Kaepernick, the professional football player turned activist and Nike spokesman, complained the design was offensive.

Nike had designed a special patriotic version of their Air Max sneaker, the Air Max 1 USA, to go on sale this week for the Fourth of July. The shoe featured a bright red, white, and blue color scheme, and the original design of the American flag, as first designed during the Revolutionary War, on the heels.

That original flag design, with thirteen white stars in a circle representing the thirteen original colonies, is often referred to as the “Betsy Ross” flag, after the Pennsylvania woman who has been credited with sewing the very first one (the historical accuracy of this claim is in doubt, but that’s a separate issue — the flag design was indeed the first one America used).

Offensive? Say what now? The Wall Street Journal explained:

Okay, well, pretty much the entire founding of our nation is “connect(ed) to an era of slavery.” Because, yes, slavery was, unfortunately, still a lawful practice — in much of the world — at that time. No, that doesn’t justify it morally and that fact isn’t something to be at all celebrated. But condemning the initial flag adopted by the country for that reason is peak wokeness-overkill.

Again, the U.S. isn’t perfect — far from it. Neither were its founders. (Neither was Betsy Ross, I’m sure.) In fact, that’s directly addressed in “1776”, as John Adams (an ardent opponent of slavery) lobbies to keep language Thomas Jefferson — yes, Jefferson — initially penned in the Declaration:

He has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere or to incur miserable death in their transportation thither.  This piratical warfare, the opprobrium of infidel powers, is the warfare of the Christian King of Great Britain.  Determined to keep open a market where Men should be bought & sold, he has prostituted his negative for suppressing every legislative attempt to prohibit or restrain this execrable commerce.  And that this assemblage of horrors might want no fact of distinguished die, he is now exciting those very people to rise in arms among us, and to purchase that liberty of which he has deprived them, by murdering the people on whom he has obtruded them: thus paying off former crimes committed again the Liberties of one people, with crimes which he urges them to commit against the lives of another.

In the show, South Carolina delegate Edward Rutledge objects to the inclusion of the passage and warns he will vote against independence (spelling doom for the Declaration, given the agreed-upon unanimity requirement) if it is left in the document. Adams, distraught, then debates the matter with Benjamin Franklin:

Dr. Benjamin Franklin John? I beg you consider what you’re doing.

John Adams Mark me, Franklin… if we give in on this issue, posterity will never forgive us.

Dr. Benjamin Franklin That’s probably true, but we won’t hear a thing, we’ll be long gone. Besides, what would posterity think we were? Demi-gods? We’re men, no more no less, trying to get a nation started against greater odds than a more generous God would have allowed. First things first, John. Independence; America. If we don’t secure that, what difference will the rest make?

Again, I realize this is dialogue from a dramatization of the events — not a documentary or reenactment from the Congressional Record. But it struck me at the time (even before the Betsy Ross Flag controversy became a thing), that the stain of slavery was addressed so frankly in the play. Keep in mind, “1776” isn’t a recent work. It premiered on Broadway in 1969. It wasn’t glossed over. It was prominent — and painful to watch. As it should be.

History isn’t utopian and historical figures, including our founding fathers, aren’t demi-gods. They were “men, no more no less.” The current trend to willfully erase them and their deeds — both good and bad — by removing markers and symbols referencing them is probably well-intentioned in most instances, but so very ill-conceived. It lets the perfect be not just the enemy of the good but swallow it whole.

We should remember them. We should honor their accomplishments and learn from their mistakes.
