On Wednesday’s episode of The View, Meghan McCain gave quite the negative review of 2020 Democratic candidates’ performance during Tuesday’s debate.

And one of those was good ol’ Elizabeth Warren, who — to the blonde fireball — didn’t do a good ‘ol job:

“I have many things to say. I was live-tweeting it because there’s only so much time in these segments. I will say — I thought Warren did a terrible job, and she was on her heels all night. And it showed just how horrible she actually is.”

Meghan also managed to call co-host Sunny Hostin a far-leftist (a characterization which which she disagreed), in response to her comment, “Did we watch the same debate?”

“I’m watching it as a Republican, and you’re saying that as a far left progressive. Mayor Pete came out swinging really hard, and I thought it was quite impressive.”

Is Meghan still a Republican? Her family’d decided back in April to endorse Biden (here).

GOP’er Abby Huntsman was impressed by Pete, too:

“I give mayor Pete, and Amy Klobuchar kudos. Mayor Pete, who I have liked from the beginning, but last night was his best performance yet. Biden also, but he delivers what Biden is saying I think so much better.”

Meghan’s comments on everyone’s favorite hunting rifle thief — Beto O’Rourke — were completely dismissive, but also, she had a really good idea.

As I covered Tuesday, Beto recently announced he’ll be exiting the political realm for good if he doesn’t snag the nomination (here).

That might not be a bad idea, since he’s seemed bent on saying things that make him wholly unelectable.

And when your campaign looks like this…

And holy heck, this:

…you might wanna broaden your options.

Therefore…Meghan with the win:

“I don’t know what Beto was doing other than running for MSNBC host. Coming up, I’m sure he’ll get a good hour.”

Perfecto!

Media will find any way to attack President Donald Trump, whether there’s reason to or not.

They showed that again today in the wake of the death of Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform Elijah Cummings (D-MD).

Trump had a very public disagreement with him in July over the condition of Baltimore.

Trump put that aside and praised Cummings in a tweet, sending condolences to his family.

But the reaction back from some was incredible.

PBS’s Yamiche Alcindor was representative of some, criticizing Trump for being kind and decent on Cummings’ passing.

Is she kidding? Nope, this is what they really think.

What? Being sympathetic is “insulting.”

They don’t believe Trump is human:

Had Trump said anything critical, they would have blasted him. Had he said nothing, they would have attacked him for ignoring his death.

There was no way he was winning with them, so he just did the decent thing regardless.

How would they have responded if it had been Trump who passed?

You know already the answer to that.

Other folks on the right, despite their differences with Cummings, praised or had kind words for him.

We still have oil, Jimmy.

Whether it is that we are going to run out of oil or that we should have already been buried underwater, it seems that all of these dire predictions never come true.

I love to go back and find these nuggets and chuckle.

As I wrote last week here at Red State about how Leonard Nimoy from Star Trek fame said another ice age was coming and we were all going to die…

READ CLIMATE FLASHBACK: In 1978 Mr. Spock Told Us Another Ice Age Would Be Here By

The 39th President of the United States, back while he was running for the job in 1976, made a dire prediction about when we were going to run out of oil at a debate with President Ford on September 23, 1976.

Let’s go to the tape…

We need to have, a realization that we’ve got about 35 years left of oil in the whole world, we’re gonna run out of oil.

This statement was not challenged but just accepted by the moderator and the general press. For those who don’t recall — the United States was coming off the early 70’s embargo of oil from the middle east that caused long waits for fuel. That Carter would say this with no back up was just simply a scare tactic.

Much like the people who are saying that today we have 12 or fewer years to live unless we pass some idiotic legislation that is just a massive wealth transfer.

So if you think that some bill signed in Washington D.C. is going to save the climate and your life you need to do some more research on how long this scam has been playing on a rewind loop. A former President of the United States said the world would be out of oil in 2011 and yet here we are in 2019 still bathing in it at really low prices also.

How about that?

George W. Bush Suddenly Learns to Talk Again, Goes After Trump On Syria

George W. Bush’s presidency is an interesting period to reflect back on. By a certain sect of Republicans, Bush is held up as a good man that did the best he could in a difficult time. There’s some truth to that characterization in so far as the challenges after 9/11 were real.

As time has passed though, Republicans at large have taken a more critical eye at his myriad of missteps, not just on foreign policy (of which the ramifications we are still suffering today), but also in his inability to accomplish much of anything for the conservative cause in his eight years. When one thinks of his “signature” achievements, the mind is more likely to go to his expansion of Medicare than any conservative victory. Is John Roberts as the new swing vote on the Supreme Court really a decisive win at this point?

But perhaps the thing that bothered some Republicans the most was all the wasted political capital. For eight long years, Republicans rallied around Bush and his failures, supporting him even when he wouldn’t speak out to support himself. He was given the benefit of the doubt even when he probably didn’t deserve it. In the end, he left the party in shambles, ushering in the era of Barack Obama.

Despite all the capital expended on his behalf, Bush couldn’t be bothered to return the favor. He spent most of his post-presidency palling around with Bill Clinton and painting pictures. He refused to speak out even as the Middle East and North Africa burned the ground. This left some Republicans disillusioned. Where was the reciprocity for all those years of support?

Apparently, Bush has found his tongue again though, because he’s speaking out against Trump’s pull out of Syria in a comment that can only be described as face palm worthy.

After nearly a decade of refusing to say a cross word about Obama’s policies, the moment Trump steps out of line and becomes too “isolationist,” he’s ready to talk again. It’s this kind of thing that produces so much of the angst from mainline Republicans toward the establishment figures in their party.

We’ve seen this same thing with Mitt Romney. When Republicans needed voices to speak against Obama, Romney was nowhere to be found. When it’s Trump and it may benefit him personally, he’s ready to talk again though. It’s opportunism at its worst and it makes Republicans feel like their own leaders don’t have their back. In short, it’s how you got Trump.

The easiest thing in the world to do right now is criticize Donald Trump. There’s no bravery in that. It’d have been much more impressive had they been willing to withstand the onslaught that would come by criticizing Obama when Republicans needed their voices.

Further, the topic in question is something Bush should sit out for the rest of his life. His track record on the Middle East simply does not lend him the credibly to speak on the issue any longer. It’d be like Donald Trump criticizing someone for having an affair. It just doesn’t make sense.

I’ll end by nothing that when the Obama administration propagated a civil war that led to 500,000 dead people, Bush didn’t speak up. When Ben Rhodes helped orchestrate the disastrous Arab Spring, Bush had nothing to say. When ISIS formed in the rubble of it all, Bush had more pictures to paint. But now, all of the sudden, he finds his voice to go after a fellow Republicans president? Really odd how that works.

The China Syndrome

Vox founder and editor Ezra Klein thinks that “Democrats need to talk about Hunter Biden. Sorry, but they do.”

Most of us likely agree with that statement.

At Tuesday night’s debate, CNN moderator Anderson Cooper did question Biden about his son. He asked:

The impeachment inquiry is centered on President Trump’s attempts to get political dirt on Vice President Biden and his son. President Trump has falsely accused your son of doing something wrong while serving on a company board in Ukraine. I want to point out there’s no evidence of wrongdoing by either one of you.

Having said that, on Sunday, you announced if you are president, no one in your family will be involved in any foreign businesses. My question is, if it’s not okay for a president’s family to be involved in foreign businesses, why was it okay for your son when you were vice president?

Remarkably, Biden got away, unchallenged, with the following answer. “My son did nothing wrong, I did nothing wrong. I carried out the policy of the United States in rooting out corruption in Ukraine. That’s what we should be focusing on.”

When it was Sen. Cory Booker’s turn to answer, he said, “I saw this play out in 2016’s election. We are … elevating a lie and attacking a statesman. That was so offensive. The only person sitting at home that was enjoying that was Donald Trump.” Okay, so let’s not ask difficult questions of candidates because they might be offended.

Booker added, “I am having deja vu all over again.” He equated talking about Hunter Biden’s position as a board member of Burisma with discussion of Hillary Clinton’s use of a private server during her tenure as Secretary of State.

Booker sees discussion of Clinton’s emails as merely a political smear? Flash to Booker. She should have been indicted for using a private server for government business, for deleting 33,000 emails (with BleachBit) she decided were personal after they’d been subpoenaed, and for destroying her old cell phones with hammers.

And, no we don’t have evidence yet that Hunter Biden broke the law, but he capitalized on his father’s position as both Vice President of the United States and as the “point man” for U.S. interests in Ukraine, by taking several million dollars from Burisma for a job he never would have been offered had his father not been Joe Biden. Hunter Biden even admitted this in his ABC interview earlier this week.

The larger problem for them lies with Joe Biden’s actions. I would argue that the evidence of wrongdoing by Joe Biden is his confession, captured on video, that he withheld $1 billion in U.S. aid until the Ukrainian president agreed to fire the prosecutor general. The only point of debate is whether Biden wanted the prosecutor fired because he was about to question his son or because, as Biden claims, the prosecutor was corrupt. I think we all know the answer to that question.

Klein argues that “Hunter Biden poses real problems for Joe Biden’s campaign, and if Democrats pretend otherwise, they’re making a mistake.”

He makes the case that, had the Democrats properly vetted Clinton during the primaries, they could have prevented her emails from becoming an issue in the general election. We all recall Sanders turning to her in a primary debate to say, “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails.” If her nearest rival had not taken discussion of her emails off the table during the primaries, Democrats would have learned quickly that they were a serious liability, and Clinton may not have won the nomination. The nomination likely would have been handed to another candidate, presumably Bernie Sanders. (Flash to Klein: Sanders would not have defeated Trump either, but that’s beside the point.)

Klein makes the case, and I agree with him, that if Democrats don’t talk about Hunter Biden now, even if that means Biden loses the nomination, it will become an issue in the general election, and may be the reason they lose the presidency a second time to President Trump. He writes, “Democrats are afraid to talk about Hunter Biden. Trump won’t be.”

No, Trump certainly won’t be.

Even With AOC and The Squad Endorsing Bernie, His Campaign Is Over.

Time for some honest analysis after the Tuesday CNN Debate Debacle on the candidate who has raised more money in the 3rd quarter than anyone else, Bernie Sanders.

The Sanders campaign raised just over $25 million for the 3rd quarter barely beating out Elizabeth Warren at just under $25 million according to CBS News. That would have made an interesting race going into the 4th quarter of this year as the time runs short before the Iowa caucuses and the New Hamshire primaries for both of these candidates.

Then the first week of October hit and Sanders had a heart attack and that changed the makeup of this whole primary season.

The announcement yesterday that Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and the other members of The Squad will be endorsing Bernie is just a 24-hour temporary shot in the arm that will have no effect on this campaign’s demise. Nice gesture but ultimately meaningless.

So why am I saying this?

According to the CDC, Bernie Sanders was one of 790,000 Americans who have a heart attack every year. Being this was his first, he was one of 580,000 that had that happen this year. Sanders is to be commended that he took the signs seriously and had it treated immediately. This undoubtedly saved his life.

However, with all that positive news, these facts remain.

Tuesday night, anyone who was tuning in at one point or another was watching Sanders more closely than anyone else. Because of our natural curiosity to see if a 78-year-old man who is two weeks from a heart attack looks like he is ok. Every single one of us thought about it and many media outlets talked about it before the debate.

This is not meant to be mean or cruel. This is just the reality of what people think and the health reality of what a 78-year-old man who just had a major heart event goes through.

Anyone who goes through a heart attack and is lucky enough to survive has a recuperation period that has to be taken. Naturally, the younger you are, the shorter that period is generally. Bernie is, no doubt, a vibrant guy for a 78-year-old. He is also now a vibrant 78 yr old who just suffered a heart attack and wisely has been resting at home. His first campaign event since his hospital stay will be this Saturday where he will get endorsed by AOC.

However, the campaign calendar is not going to afford Bernie the time to recover. The Iowa caucuses are in 109 days and the New Hampshire primary is one week later.

I would much rather have a vigorous Bernie Sanders out on the trail making his case for his ideas and that he be defeated in that arena than for him to be sidelined like this. Plus I love Larry Davids’s impersonation of him and I want more of that.

Sanders will still be able to influence the Democratic race for the nomination from the sidelines and yes it will be from the sidelines. I’m sure all of the candidates left will be lobbying him heavily for his endorsement as they should.

However, it is only a matter of time before the lack of campaign events scheduled and the whispers of “Where is Bernie?” become the norm and ultimately force him out of the race. Sanders has proven that he is a force to be reckoned with and he still can be for many years to come.

Just not as a candidate for President of the United States.

Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) died early this morning from complications of various health issues, according to his office. He was 68 years old.

A central figure in the impeachment inquiry in Congress, Cummings was the chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. He was one of three chairmen leading the investigation into President Donald Trump’s call with and actions regarding Ukraine. Cummings was an outspoken critic of the President, and was the target of a much-criticized tweet from Trump calling Cummings’ city of Baltimore a “rat-infested mess.”

The Baltimore native has received praise from both sides of the political aisle for his years of service in Congress.

From Democrat Joe Kennedy III:

To Republican Chip Roy:

The passing of Cummings will mean that Speaker Nancy Pelosi will have to pick a new chair for Cummings’ committee and a special election will eventually be held in his district, MD-07, which is a D+51 district and will likely feature several candidates vying for the job.

Could The China Trade War Be Nearing An End?

Westlake Legal Group Trump-invites-trade-war Could The China Trade War Be Nearing An End? white house Trade War trade Tariffs Front Page Stories Featured Story Economy China Trade Talks China

Ever since the Trump administration began shifting how it dealt with China on trade, doomsday prophets have been warning us that we would all feel the economic pain of new tariffs and our economy may not survive it.

So far, that doesn’t seem to have played out as dramatically as predicted as the trade war has ebbed and flowed over two years. And now, if the White House is correct it its assessment, the war may be nearing its end.

While Americans certainly have paid billions more per month, and have been encouraged to buy American to help minimize the sting, according to a Friday announcement from the White House, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping hope to sign the first phase of a tentative trade deal at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit on Nov. 16-17 in Santiago, Chile.

Initially, the White House decided on a good faith action to suspend an Oct. 15 scheduled increase in tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods. But the tariffs on another $400 billion of goods from China, as well as new tariffs scheduled to take effect in December, have not been included in the phase I portion of the new deal.

For now, it looks like the initial phase will be all about China buying American agricultural goods as it battles challenges in its own agricultural sector.

According to Trump, China has also agreed to continue purchasing more U.S. agricultural products. Chinese purchases of U.S. agricultural products have been resuming as China’s farmers continue to battle an African Swine Flu and Fall Armyworm infestation that’s been destroying their pig and crop numbers.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin clarified that China will eventually buy between $40 to $50 billion worth of agricultural products a year.

While there is no text for phase one of a deal with China, in principle, other parts of the deal will include addressing issues like non-tariff barriers to U.S. agricultural exports to China, financial services and market accessibly, intellectual property protection, stopping the transfer of technology, and possibly an agreement on currency manipulation.

Some of these issues will be covered in other phases as well.

The Daily Signal suggests the phased approach may be a work-around for the two leaders to gain trust in the wake of other potential deals that failed earlier in 2019. If the deal is agreed upon in November, planning for future phases will likely begin immediately.

Which raises the question: what will those who warned engaging in a trade war would lead to never-ending negotiations and increasingly high prices have to criticize if the administration manages to get a phased deal going?

What will happen if it works?

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., meets with reporters at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, May 23, 2019. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

President Trump met with Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Steny Hoyer this afternoon on the subject of Syria. You didn’t need much imagination to see how this particular movie was going to end. Like the last several meetings between Trump and Pelosi, it broke down in recriminations. Allegedly, and I say that because the only people talking now are the Democrats and they aren’t terribly trustworty, Trump called Pelosi a “third rate politician” and Pelosi resurrected the scurrilous falsehood disproven by Robert Mueller that Trump is doing Putin’s bidding. (By the way, if your only foreign policy objective is to do something to stymie another country, you don’t have a policy, you have a middle school mean girls clique.) When the meeting broke up, Trump promised to “see [them] at the polls.”

Now both sides are engaged in trolling.

In her statement, on the video, Pelosi claims Trump was rattled by the House vote to disapprove of his action on Syria (that and about $7 will get you coffee at Starbucks).

Trump took to Twitter

Pelosi is using one of the image Trump released of the meeting as her Twitter cover image.

Just some thoughts:

  • There is little doubt in my mind that Trump was probably torqued by the House vote. He had no reason to be because it was obvious how that was going to go.
  • A case might be made that Trump was trying to provoke Pelosi into an impeachment vote because it is easier to fight something than nothing. But I thing the best explanation is that Trump and Pelosi detest one another and can’t be bothered to put on a facade of comity.
  • I’m not really certain why Trump agreed to meet with the Democrat leadership on this subject. It isn’t like they are going to do anything but screw with him. My guess is that one of the big brain thinkers in the White House thought it would be a great show of something or another if Trump could be seen doing business with the vicious harridan who has spent three years trying to delegitimize his presidency. I hope that person is unemployed tonight.
  • Neither side came out of this looking great, but neither was hurt in general and both sides gave their partisans some red meat.
  • As long as impeachment is on the table, there is no good reason for Trump or his White House to have any dealings with Pelosi at all.
  • If there was an upside to this, it was Trump sending a message to the executive branch that you deal with House Democrats at your peril.
