Justin Amash Resigns From Group He Helped Found, House Freedom Caucus

Sometimes things move pretty quick.

Just yesterday right here on the pages of Red State I wrote a piece about the lone elected Republican in Washington D.C. who feels that President Trump should be impeached. That individual is Rep. Justin Amash from the great State of Michigan.

Here is my article from yesterday Hero Or Heel? Justin Amash After His Trump Impeachment Stance.

Now comes word that Amash has resigned from the group and the board that he helped create, the House Freedom Caucus. According to ole reliable CNN

Rep. Justin Amash on Monday stepped down from the conservative House Freedom Caucus less than a month after becoming the first Republican member of Congress to say President Donald Trump has committed impeachable offenses.

“I have the highest regard for them and they’re my close friends,” he told CNN. “I didn’t want to be a further distraction for the group.”

“It was a positive meeting. It wasn’t negative,” Amash said.

He emphasized his decision was voluntary and that he remains on good terms with his colleagues.

Amash had been rebuked by the Freedom Caucus after he tweeted his opinion back in May that President Trump should be impeached with what he read in the Mueller report.

The timing of this does lead to some speculation of what is in the Congressman’s future. He had not been attending meetings of the group since at least March due to his disagreements of how his colleagues were drifting closer to Trump than he liked. So the resignation now could be in response to the official rebuke he received last month and as Amash tells CNN he no longer wants to be a distraction for the others.

Possibly he is seriously considering running for the GOP nomination for Senate next year in Michigan or taking on Trump nationally. Amash recently as his town hall had not ruled out the possibility of running against Trump in some sort of capacity next year.

Only time will tell.

Noted Dumpster Fire ThinkProgress Is Facing Major Financial Shortfalls

Westlake Legal Group milhiser-kavanaugh-620x338 Noted Dumpster Fire ThinkProgress Is Facing Major Financial Shortfalls union ThinkProgress the daily beast Shortfall Politics No Revenue Money Issues Josh Hawley Hillary Clinton Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Failing dumpster fire democrats center for American progress

ThinkProgress is a particularly terrible site. I don’t mind partisanship and won’t pretend that RedState isn’t ideologically bent. But there’s a difference between being an opinion site and just making things up. ThinkProgress regularly traffics in the latter and they are essentially a mouthpiece for the Clinton wing of the party, having feuded with the Bernie Sanders contingent in the past.

Take this headline from today, for example.

Missouri senator says it’s a waste of time to study history because it was a long time ago.

Yeah, well except Sen. Hawley didn’t say that at all and Congress is not “studying history” by bringing in and irrelevant grifter like John Dean to riff about Watergate.

To make it worse, ThinkProgress then tried to call Hawley a hypocrite because he talked about honoring the sacrifice of D-Day veterans last week. You see, he does care about history when it suits him! Got heem!

That’s the kind of dumpster fire product that ThinkProgress publishes every day. They are like the Infowars of the left, but less entertaining.

Well, news broke today that their business model isn’t working out for them anymore. They are facing a large shortfall and risk having to close up shop in the future.

ThinkProgress, the website that is a project of the Democratic Party’s primary think tank, is facing dire financial troubles and bleeding staff, according to primary-source documents viewed by The Daily Beast.

A budget document provided to ThinkProgress management and obtained by The Daily Beast showed that the website was expecting a roughly $3 million gulf between revenue and expenses for 2019. ThinkProgress has never been a revenue generator, and has often made up for its deficits through fundraising efforts and funds from its mothership entity, the Center for American Progress (CAP). But the current outlook is significantly worse than ever before.

In other words, ThinkProgress is your typical left wing scam. They can’t actually produce enough money to sustain themselves, so they’ve relied on liberal donors ponying money up via a Super PAC.

According to the document, advertising revenue is projected to fall $350,000 short of what was budgeted this year, and online contributions are expected to fall short by nearly $180,000. The site is projected to have about $64,000 in grant revenue (money derived from donations to CAP and meant for coverage by ThinkProgress) in 2019. That’s roughly $60,000 short of what it had budgeted for the year and roughly $540,000 less than it received in 2018.

Those aren’t sustainable numbers and more layoffs are coming. How do you go broke in the age of Trump as a media company? I don’t know, but ThinkProgress has figured it out.

According to a source at ThinkProgress, the site is already in a state of “slow attrition.” Four people, the source said, have left this year. Culp-Ressler’s announced departure makes five, though she remains on staff at the moment. A source said the number is expected to drop further by the end of the second quarter.

ThinkProgress is of course unionized, which means it’ll probably end up a smoking hole before too long. No amount of bargaining or socialist virtue signaling is going to keep the lights on if the money isn’t there and right now, the money isn’t there.

Perhaps some liberal sugar-daddy will swoop in and save them the way other liberal outlets have been rescued. Here’s a better idea though. How about producing material people actually want to read? Crazy, I know.

Paradigm Shift: ‘Migrant Rights’ Activists Who Led Caravans Charged With Human Trafficking

Westlake Legal Group migrant-caravan-abc-news-SCREENSHOT-620x331 Paradigm Shift: ‘Migrant Rights’ Activists Who Led Caravans Charged With Human Trafficking Pueblo sin Frontreras Migrant Caravans immigration human smuggling Front Page Stories Featured Story

Two men who claim they work on behalf of migrant rights, and who have been involved in organizing and leading the Central American caravans up through Mexico to the U.S. border, were arrested and charged with human trafficking just as the U.S. was engaged in tariff and immigration talks with the Mexican government.

Irineo Mujica, who holds dual Mexican and American citizenship, is director of the Mexico-based group Pueblo Sin Fronteras (“People without Borders), an organization that claims to work on migrant rights but that has also been suspected of organizing the waves of caravans that moved through Mexico and landed at the U.S. southern border.

He, along with activist Cristobal Sanchez, were arrested by Mexican authorities following charges levied by Honduran nationals who claimed they had promised to bring them into Mexico and to help them get into the U.S. illegally in exchange for money.

Irineo was detained and quickly released in October at a March in support of the migrant caravans. The U.S. has been calling these “activists” smugglers for some time, and it would appear they have convinced Mexico to share their view.

The US and Mexico have often referred to caravan organizers as human smugglers. In February, Mexico’s interior secretary, Olga Sánchez Cordero, said members of Pueblo Sin Fronteras are among those the government has identified in promoting and organizing caravans and suggested that some may be involved in human smuggling.

While the U.S. media spins tales that the Trump administration has claimed victory in their deal with Mexico erroneously, the arrest of Mujica is certainly new. And, perhaps even more interesting, the Mexican Finance Department’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) froze the accounts of 26 others they believed were involved in the trafficking of migrants and organizing the caravans.

[W]hile caravans were traveling through Mexico between October 2018 and June 2019, the UIF identified a group of people who made “unusual” transactions from accounts in Chiapas and Querétaro to several countries, “including some considered risky jurisdictions by the Financial Action Task Force.”

It also said that a series of financial transfers from Querétaro to six northern border cities – Tijuana, Nogales, Ciudad Juárez, Ciudad Acuña, Piedras Negras and Reynosa – were detected.

The transferred funds originally came from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – the three largest migrant source countries – as well as Cameroon, the United States and England, the SHCP said, stating it believed the payments were made in exchange for smuggling migrants and that criminal complaints will be filed.

Financial transactions from the countries of origin to ostensibly help move migrants doesn’t lend credence to the narrative that these were grassroots groups of people who decided to move north en masse to escape the violence in their home countries.  And the fact that some of those transactions originated in the U.S., England, and Cameroon of all places it starts to look like there was organizing — and payment for it — afoot.

No matter what the final deal with Mexico looks like, the arrest of Mujica and the targeting of those who would engage in human trafficking, is beyond the status quo and signals a paradigm shift in U.S. relations with its Southern neighbor.

Unwoke Advice for Climate Change Kids

Climate change promises to be the most problematic issue for this summit after Trump’s decision to review U.S. policies related to the Paris Agreement on fighting global warming. (AP Photo/Paolo Santalucia)

Today’s Climate Change strategy has shifted to target a more youthful demographic. Led by a job-killing freshman Congresswoman, a 16-year old Swedish girl with a TED talk and a foul-mouthed kids’ TV clown, the movement has abandoned preachy polemics for school strikes, shouting down the wisdom and experience of their elders. (During my active blogging days, we had to deal with the insufferable Al Gore. Maybe things have improved.)

[Sample conversation follows.]

Them: “We’ve got to do something now!
Us: “Now?”
Them: “Yes, now, before it’s too late!! It’s our future!”
Us: “What should we do?”
Them: “The Green New Deal! Climate Justice! Leave it in the ground!! Something!!”
Us: “But what if we can’t get China and India on board?”
Them: “We’ve got to do something now!!”
Bill Nye: “Aren’t you listening, a******? The f****** planet is on fire.”
Us: “Oy, vey.”

The Do Something Now! Crowd are past masters at controlling the Climate Change narrative. Any pushback is predictably characterized as dangerous, selfish, and greedy, not to mention racist, anti-feminist, and anti-child. Conservative and skeptics “deny science” and are stuck in the past. Naturally.

Conservatives must resist this false narrative. It is a moral imperative of our time to make reasoned, rational policy decisions regarding our energy future. Those decisions necessarily involve considering all technologies, based on sound engineering and honest cost/benefit analyses. This is an adult responsibility; failure has a price measured not just in dollars, but in human lives.

Can we learn something from history, or even current events?

Westlake Legal Group img_0102 Unwoke Advice for Climate Change Kids Uncategorized Front Page Stories Featured Story Do Something Now! has already been implemented, and it is failing before our eyes. German policymakers first implemented Energiewende (“energy transition”), in 2010. They doubled down in 2011, in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, curtailing nuclear power generation and committing to shut it down altogether by 2022. All the features are there: the Smart Grid, offshore wind, subsidies for renewables…

Germany’s Federal Court of Auditors is … forthright about the failures. The shift to renewables, the federal auditors say, has cost at least 160 billion euros [$180 billion at 2019 exchange rates] in the last five years. Meanwhile, the expenditures “are in extreme disproportion to the results,” Federal Court of Auditors President Kay Scheller said last fall, although his assessment went largely unheard in the political arena. Scheller is even concerned that voters could soon lose all faith in the government because of this massive failure. (“German Failure on the Road to a Renewable Future”, Der Spiegel Online, May 13, 2019.)

Germany’s half-baked plans suffered a myriad of setbacks:

  • Fearing voter backlash, politicians shunned ownership; 675 leaderless bureaucrats advance the Energiewende cause.
  • Offshore wind is expensive to install, operate, and maintain. Who knew?
  • The Chinese priced their solar panels low enough to drive out German competitors.
  • German citizens have the same kind of NIMBY concerns as Americans.
  • The bone-headed decision to ditch nuclear energy due to a nonexistent tsunami threat makes Germany as dependent on coal as ever, so they haven’t made progress on carbon emissions in years.

For the U.S. “no plan” turned out to be the best plan. We failed to ratify Kyoto, we backed out of the Paris Accords, we chose not to implement a carbon tax.

Yet today the U.S. is the star pupil, reducing carbon emissions ahead of any of the protocols’ goals, while at the same time enjoying a robust economy.

Economics is all about optimizing the use of limited resources. When resources are used suboptimally, or simply frittered away, people will suffer. Some people will die. [Credit to P.J. O’Rourke for first opening my eyes to this concept, probably in All the Trouble in the World (1994).]

Sticking to the narrative, the nightly news conveys the impact of higher “green” energy costs in terms foregoing some trivial middle-class luxury, like a grande chai latte per week. That may be the impact on people like you and me, but people on the economic margins face non-trivial economic choices.

A paper titled “Inexpensive Heating Reduces Winter Mortality” (pdf link), featured in a recent blog by Mark J. Perry of the American Enterprise Institute, brings the point home.

In the US, 17% of households spend more than 10% of their income on home energy. Heating is the largest component of annual home energy consumption, despite being used for only part of the year …

High heating costs impose a difficult trade-off on households: They have to keep their home uncomfortably cold to save on heating or forgo other spending to afford their high heating bill.

The paper’s authors statistically measured the impact of natural gas prices on winter mortality and concluded that cheaper natural gas in the U.S. translates to 11,000 fewer deaths per year due to respiratory disease and other cold-related causes.

Cheaper natural gas means greater wintertime comfort and better health for those in poverty, those on fixed incomes, pensioners, the elderly, the disabled. You know, the people that the Left claims to care about.

The Green New Deal, indeed most Climate Change proposals, promise higher costs for natural gas and other fossil fuels. Sorry, Grandma, but somebody has to sacrifice for climate justice, whatever that is.

Our economy is five times the size of Germany’s; a debacle of similar magnitude in the U.S. would flush away nearly $1 trillion. Could we learn from Energiewende and keep the transition minus the boondoggle? The Left will argue that the last guys that tried to Do Something Now! just blew the execution. Kinda like communism.

But the American political culture is even more diverse than Germany’s, making smooth adoption of such massive changes extremely unlikely. If any of the Green New Deal proposals for massive infrastructure changes were to pass, opposition to permits and construction projects will certainly be led by the very activists who are now vocal proponents of the Green New Deal.

Thanks for your passion, kids, but it’s best if our nation’s energy policy decisions are made by grownups; someone who knows a dekatherm from designer dungarees. If you’re open to the suggestions of an adult, don’t strike; stay in school. Math and science will help you understand the issues, but it’s most important that you learn to think independently. Practice being skeptical of those adults who push only one side of an issue, and be distrustful of their motives.

But do it before it’s too late. After all, it’s your future.

180 Business Executives Seem to Think We Care About Their Pro-Abortion Petition

Westlake Legal Group jack-dorsey-620x317 180 Business Executives Seem to Think We Care About Their Pro-Abortion Petition twitter Pro-Life Politics petition Georgia Front Page Stories Featured Story democrats ceo bloomberg Allow Media Exception Alabama Abortion

FILE – In this Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, file photo, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is interviewed on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Dorsey said Nov. 22, 2016, that the social media platform accidentally suspended his own account. (AP Photo/Richard Drew, File)

With the anti-abortion wave hitting America, the leftist elite has been up in arms trying to dissuade the growth of the movement by threatening to withdraw business from participating states. A recent petition from 180 business executives is just one more drop in the bucket of businesses who think people will take them seriously if they band together and plead for the stopping of child murder to stop.

According to Fox Business, CEOs like Twitter’s Jack Dorsey and Bloomberg chairman Peter Grauer joined nearly 200 other executives to protest recent anti-abortion laws, describing anti-abortion legislation as “bad for business”:

The letter, which appeared as a full-page ad in the Monday edition of The New York Times under the titled “Don’t Ban Equality,”Opens a New Window. called on companies to “stand up for reproductive health care.” CEOs from media, fashion, beauty, food and tech companies were among those listed as signatories.

“Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health, independence and economic stability of our employees and customers,” the letter stated. “Simply put, it goes against our values, and is bad for business.”

“It impairs our ability to build diverse and inclusive workforce pipelines, recruit top talent across the states, and protect the wellbeing of all the people who keep our businesses thriving day in and out,” it added.

You can see the print out version of the ad, along with all the signatories, here.

If you’re looking for an explanation on how abortion restrictions impair the “ability to build diverse and inclusive workforce pipelines” then you won’t find it anywhere, as the CEO’s don’t care to explain it. However, if I was to guess what they’re getting at, then I can only conclude that they consider pregnancy and being a mother to be a massive problem for women.

It’s definitely a complication, but it’s not the end of the world. It definitely changes your life, but it doesn’t end it.

However, the letter only gets more ridiculous.

“The future of gender equality hangs in the balance, putting our families, communities, businesses and the economy at risk,” the letter stated.

Let’s dissect that one point at a time.

Gender equality has already been achieved. In fact, we have laws around it. The ability to have an abortion has nothing to do with the rights of women, and everything to do with protecting life. If men were the only ones who could have abortions then the fight would be the absolute same, no matter what the old feminist joke says.

Furthermore, I can simply say that abortion is a threat to a family as it literally eliminates a family member from this plane of existence.

Lastly, I’m not sure how it puts the business and economy at risk seeing as how more people means more chances for your product to be purchased and used. It’s a backward thing to say that a reduction of customers is better for business.

More importantly than dissecting their points, however, is the question of why we should care about their opinion. Like Hollywood celebrities, high-profile CEOs seem to believe that because a decent amount of people ask “how high” when told to jump, that the rest of America is ready to be their yes-men.

I’ve got sour news for them. Even coming together like some executive Voltron and presenting a united front of leftist CEO’s isn’t going to convince people who hate abortion to stop hating it. What’s more, these businesses aren’t going to stop serving people in those states over it. It’s a hollow effort.

As far as I can tell, this was an effort at self-promotion. A chance to be on a who’s who list of leftist corporate elites. Having your name on this list makes you look important at the coastal cocktail parties they attend, and fair enough…

…but the rest of us don’t care.

PA State Rep. Brian Sims (D) stalks pro-lifers outside of a Planned Parenthood. Screen grab via Life News HQ.

Pennsylvania State Rep. Brian Sims (D) might have thought the uproar surrounding his despicable attempts at harassing and doxxing three pro-life teenagers and an elderly pro-life woman at a local Planned Parenthood were behind him, but one state legislator says not so fast.

PennLive reports on Rep. Jerry Knowles (R) and his efforts at having Sims censured over his actions:

Rep. Jerry Knowles is seeking support for a resolution that asks for Sims, a four-term Philadelphia Democrat, to be removed from the four committees of which he is a member and to bar him from being appointed to any positions or committees for the remainder of his term that expires on Nov. 30, 2020.

[…]

House Democratic spokesman Bill Patton said previously Sims has discussed his behavior with House Democratic and Republican leaders and Democratic leaders “are satisfied it will not be repeated. Republican leaders are aware of this.” Patton did not respond to a request for comment about Knowles’ resolution late Tuesday afternoon.

Noting Sims has failed to apologize for what he did, Knowles listed his reasons for seeking the Democrat’s censure in a memo requesting co-sponsors:

On the first occasion, Representative Sims recorded himself berating, harassing, and violating the First Amendment rights of an individual, whom he labeled, an “old, white lady” for peacefully protesting and praying in public.

On the second occasion, Representative Sims again recorded himself berating, harassing others. He went a step further the second time, though, calling for the “doxing” of three minor children and one adult female. By soliciting strangers on the internet for their personal identifying information (i.e. names and addresses), Sims placed these citizens in reasonable fear for their own safety, merely because they were exercising their constitutional right to peacefully protest.

It should be noted that Representative Sims also used his elected position to intimidate the individuals with whom he was interacting, clearly stating on the videos that he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

As part of my censure resolution, I ask that Representative Sims be removed as a member of all standing committees and that he receives no appointments to any positions or committees that fall under the authority of the Speaker or House Leadership, for the remainder of this term.

Since that time, numerous co-sponsors have signed on to the resolution. You can read the full text of House Resolution 387 here.

Knowles is right. To date, Sims has not apologized to the women he stalked at the Philadelphia Planned Parenthood.

The resolution is being well-received by pro-life groups, according to Life News HQ:

Maria V. Gallagher, legislative director of the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, praised the effort.

“Women and girls should not be harassed simply for exercising their First Amendment rights,” Gallagher told LifeNews. “For the sake of the dignity of women, the Constitution, and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, this resolution deserves passage.”

The Pennsylvania General Assembly is controlled by Republicans. The state’s governor, Tom Wolf, is a Democrat who issued a tepid statement on the Sims bullying incidents last month.

Greg Abbott Is On a Roll as He Destroys Anti-Free Speech Operatives On Texas Campuses

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is on a limited government warpath right now, and his latest victim is the anti-free speech movement sweeping campuses across the United States.

Too often, college campuses cave to social justice warriors who do everything in their power to eliminate any kind of speech that would run contrary to their hard-left narrative. As such, campuses everywhere become infected with this despotic hold what can and can’t be said, either because the hard-left has infiltrated student governments or administration positions, or because the college is scared of them.

Not in Texas. Not now. Abbott posted yet another one of his famous videos in which he shows himself signing a bill that only grants more freedom to Texans.

“Some colleges are banning free speech on college campuses,” Abbott said. “Well, no more because I’m about to sign a law that protects free speech on college campuses in Texas.”

“Shouldn’t have to do it,” he added. “The First Amendment guarantees it. Now, it’s law in Texas.”

Abbott is correct. He shouldn’t have to do this at all, not just in terms of protecting free speech in federally funded places, but that this is necessary in places where students are supposed to be learning everything they can. Instead of being taught various aspects and views of humanity, they’re being forced to learn only critical theory and all the prejudices that come with it. They’re not taught how to think, they’re taught what to think.

Party of being taught what to think is forcing only some things to be heard. Anything contrary to the narrative has to go.

This isn’t education, this is brainwashing.

While it’s not going to fully cure the disease, forcing campuses to at least allow dissent to this hard-left agenda is a good step in reversing its course.

This is the third video Abbott has released showing himself terminating some form of government hold on something. Before this video, Abbott signed into law the ability for alcohol to be delivered to your home just like pizza is. Before that, he signed a law banning red light cameras throughout the state.

I defy you to name a better governor in office right now.

They just won’t leave him alone.

Jack Phillips of the Masterpiece Cakeshop is once again embroiled in a third lawsuit, this time by a transgendered person who Phillips refused to bake a cake to celebrate a gender transition according to CBS4. Autumn Scardina had once attempted to sue Phillips before for denying a celebratory transition cake:

The latest lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Denver District Court on behalf of Autumn Scardina by attorneys Paula Greisen and John McHugh.

Scardina had filed a previous lawsuit against Phillips following her request for a cake – an order she placed the day of the SCOTUS ruling. Previous reports say Scardina’s order was for a cake celebrating her gender transition.

Scardina is now going in for round two, this time saying that Phillips was discriminatory and used “deceptive and unfair trade practices:”

“The dignity of all citizens in our state needs to be honored. Masterpiece Cakeshop said before the Supreme Court they would serve any baked good to members of the LGBTQ community. It was just the religious significance of it being a wedding cake,” Griesen said. “We don’t believe they’ve been honest with the public.”

In the complaint’s text, Scardina’s attorneys cite testimony in previous court proceedings: “Mr. Phillips, for himself and on behalf of Masterpiece Cakeshop, confirmed that they would happily make the exact same cake requested by Ms. Scardina for other customers.”

Alliance Defending Freedom senior counsel Jim Campbell, who represents Phillips, said that this is just one more attempt to hit Phillips with charges that didn’t stick the first time.

“A new lawsuit has been filed against Masterpiece Cakeshop that appears to largely rehash old claims,” said Campbell in a formal statement. “The State of Colorado abandoned similar ones just a few months ago. So this latest attack by Scardina looks like yet another desperate attempt to harass cake artist Jack Phillips. And it stumbles over the one detail that matters most: Jack serves everyone; he just cannot express all messages through his custom cakes.”

The activists involved are upset that Phillips won a case against them and now they’re going to do everything in their power to punish him. At this point, this is nothing but targeted harassment of Phillips, and the only reason it’s not considered a class 3 misdemeanor in the state of Colorado is that the activists are masking it as a civil rights issue.

The real civil rights issue here is the attempts at forcing Phillips to serve them themed cakes against his religious convictions. Not only that, the activists want this to serve as a warning to anyone else who would be so bold as to stand by their Christian convictions.

These are bullies. Pure and simple.

Have there been real problems with sexual harassment and assault among powerful men and female subordinates? Absolutely. Does that mean that it’s fair to generalize men as toxic predators and tacitly endorse the idea that proof isn’t needed? Of course not. In the midst of some very legitimate reports of abuse, there were men caught up in false allegations as well. Kavanaugh may be the most famous example, but he’s hardly the only one.

After the #MeToo movement became so high profile, a strange thing starting happening. Men got terrified of being falsely accused and started making behavioral changes in regards to their interactions with women.

CNBC recently ran an article titled “60% of male managers now say they’re uncomfortable participating in work activities with women.”

The #MeToo and Time’s Up movements have brought huge attention to the challenges women face at work, but a new survey finds that 60% of male managers say they’re uncomfortable participating in regular work activities with women, including mentoring, working one-on-one or socializing.

According to the survey, released by LeanIn.org and SurveyMonkey, that’s a 33% increase from last year.

Senior-level men also say they are 12 times more likely to be hesitant about one-on-one meetings with a junior woman than they are a junior man, nine times more likely to be hesitant to travel with a junior woman for work than a junior man, and six times more likely to be hesitant to have a work dinner with a junior woman than a junior man.

Who could have possibly foreseen this?

Regardless, you’d think this new cautious approach would please liberal minded individuals who pushed the idea of a pervasive, toxic culture among men.

Nah, they are still mad.

Yes, I’m sure “growing up” will help if a woman claims something falsely after a private meeting. In a “his word against hers” situation like that, there is essentially no defense, as we’ve seen played out in the media multiple times over the last several years, including on college campuses. The media will destroy anyone who is accused and even if they aren’t important enough to make CNN, social media will be sure to do the job with their incessant mobbing.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of course had to chime in as well.

Here’s the thing. One only has to read the frothing responses to her tweet to see exactly why it’s smart for men to be overly cautious. The initial judgement by these people is to always assume the man is being a creep and that he’s guilty. You see it in AOC’s tweet with the assumption that men simply can’t control themselves.

There’s a lot of truth to that. There’s absolutely no doubt that some men have done bad things. But it’s also true that a lot of men have made jokes, comments, etc. that they meant nothing by and ended up having their lives ruined over it.

With all this said, I don’t want to paint women with a broad brush either. The vast majority of them are not looking to falsely accuse men of sexual misdeeds. It’s likely 99.9% safe for men to continue doing what they’ve always done in regards to mentoring and working with women. But, perception is reality and the media chose to blow things up to astronomical proportions while the #MeToo movement also clearly overstepped its bounds. That’s left many men deciding it is better to be safe than sorry, even if the chance of a false accusation is small.

In the end, #MeToo proponents can’t really have it both ways. They created an environment where accusations are wholly destructive before any adjudication and men are rightly deciding to not take any unnecessary chances. Now, those #MeToo proponents have to live with the consequences and that may hurt women in the workplace if male superiors don’t feel comfortable interacting with them on a private, mentoring level.

Beto O’Rourke Says Eliminating Citizenship Test for New Immigrants is ‘Something For Us To Think About’

2020 Democratic Presidential candidate and former backbencher Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) said that eliminating the citizenship test is “something for us to think about” at a candidate forum at Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa over the weekend.

Yahoo News national political reporter Brittany Shepherd was among the reporters present who reported on O’Rourke’s comments, noting that he was replying to another panelist who characterized the citizenship test as a “structural barrier for immigrants.”

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website, the citizenship test has two parts, one to test English proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing, and another to test civics knowledge. The USCIS has study materials and practice tests available on the website as well.

The civics portion is drawn from a list of 100 possible questions. Applicants are asked up to ten questions and must answer at least six correctly in order to pass. Applicants get two chances to take the English and civics tests per application, and if they fail either portion, will be retested on that portion between 60 and 90 days from the date of the original interview.

The test has generally been regarded as something that requires study, testing knowledge that many immigrants might not already know, but not overly onerous.

More importantly, the inclusion of concepts like democracy, freedom of speech and other rights, and free elections, are a crucial part of integrating a new immigrant into the American system.

The test needs to be fair, the scoring system clear and simple, and the materials potentially subject to testing readily available, and the overall administration of the test conducted in a transparent and ethical manner. But to suggest that immigrants not show basic proficiency in English and American history and our system of government is absurd.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) called O’Rourke’s suggestion “stunning” and proof that the Democratic presidential candidates were “embracing the far left, fringy, extreme wing of their party.” Twitchy had more reactions to this radical proposal.

Debates about immigration and what reforms would improve our system are a good and valid discussion, and to be expected as the 2020 elections rapidly approach. However, eliminating a basic test that asks an immigrant to prove a basic proficiency in our language and civics, and commitment to the American system, is a terrible idea that would only serve to make the system worse.
