Beto Falsely Accuses Meghan McCain of Encouraging Gun Violence After She Criticized His Gun Confiscation Plan

Yesterday, I wrote about “View” co-host Meghan McCain’s comments on 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke’s gun confiscation plan.

To recap, McCain told her fellow co-hosts Tuesday during a discussion of O’Rourke’s plan that she was not going to give up her guns, and that his call to forcibly confiscate weapons would lead to violence:

“This is a ground-level issue for me,” she said, targeting 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke’s mandatory buyback plan. “If you’re going to be a gun-grabber, you don’t get my vote, period. We got to have a different conversation.”

Longtime host Joy Behar brought up the federal assault weapons ban in 1994 under former President Bill Clinton. “If you keeping rooting for Republicans, you’re going to get nothing done.”

“The AR-15 is by far the most popular gun in America, by far,” McCain said. “I was just in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, if you’re talking about taking people’s guns from them, there’s going to be a lot of violence.”

“But they lived without them for many years during the ban,” Behar replied.

“I’m not living without guns,” McCain responded. “It’s just that simple!”

McCain’s reality-based comments upset a lot of The Usual SuspectsWestlake Legal Group 2122 Beto Falsely Accuses Meghan McCain of Encouraging Gun Violence After She Criticized His Gun Confiscation Plan The View Social Media republicans Politics North Carolina Meghan McCain Media mass shootings Guns gun rights gun control Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post elections democrats Culture crime Campaigns Beto O'Rourke beto Allow Media Exception 2A 2020 Elections 2020 , including failed presidential candidate and Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who lied about McCain’s position by saying she “threatened violence.”

Failing presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke responded to McCain’s remarks about his plan by doing what liberals like he, Swalwell and others typically do when they have no legitimate response to fight back with: Accuse their critics of incitement. Here’s what he told the Daily Beast:

“I just I think that kind of language and rhetoric is not helpful,” the former congressman told The Daily Beast prior to joining a Wednesday marathon climate town hall on CNN. “It becomes self-fulfilling; you have people on TV who are almost giving you permission to be violent and saying, ‘You know this is this is going to happen.’”

O’Rourke brought up McCain’s name unprompted after “The View” host had said, earlier this week, that an attempt by the government to compel AR-15 owners to sell back their weapons would prompt “a lot of violence.”

“When someone says, “If you do this, then this will happen,” O’Rourke said, “almost as though that’s a natural response or maybe even something that should happen or deserves to happen.

Twitter users were not having his nonsense and gave him a much-needed reality check:

McCain herself responded to Beto’s false accusations:

Charles C.W. Cooke spells it out for O’Rourke and the anti-Meghan McCain social media mobs

There are just two types of people engaging in this debate: People who know that Meghan McCain is correct, and people who are pretending that they do not know that Meghan McCain is correct. It doesn’t not especially matter what your politics are, or what you think of private gun ownership in the United States. It does not matter, either, whether you want Meghan McCain to be right or you want her to be wrong. If you have read any American history at all, you know that, as a matter of dull, neutral fact, McCain is correct.

Second Amendment activist Stephen Gutowski made the same point in the immediate aftermath of her comments as the condemnations from leftists were rolling in Tuesday:

Beto O’Rourke and other demagoguing leftists are entitled to their own opinions, but they are most certainly not entitled to their own facts.

Unsolicited Advice: Widen Your Circle

Westlake Legal Group 1780881b-c4a5-495d-9626-9a6daba9042d Unsolicited Advice: Widen Your Circle Trump social isolation neighbors Front Page Stories Featured Story Erick McCormack debra messing Culture celebrity cocoons bubbles blacklist

Welcome to Unsolicited Advice, the weekly column where I give advice no one asked for to people I don’t even know.
Last week I advised parents who feel their best days were behind them to rethink that very sad position. This week I switch gears to address some celebrity offenders.

The internet was abuzz with cheers, criticism and ridicule for Will & Grace stars Debra Messing and Erick McCormack when they tweeted requests to out every Hollywood Donald Trump donor at an upcoming Beverly Hills fundraiser event. Messing said “the public has a right to know” and McCormack seemingly suggested a sort of blacklist, saying the attendee list should be released so “we know who we want to work with.” Debra and Erick, I have some advice for you.

Widen your circles.

You see, your level of outrage directly correlates to the level of your social isolation. People who have a diverse group of friends may feel disdain or even hatred for the man in the White House, but they don’t feel like everyone who doesn’t think like them is an enemy. That’s because they can look at the people they’ve cultivated relationships with and see that despite their differences those people are neighbors, not adversaries.

I’m going to crib this thought from my friend Kristy Swanson and tell you that if you two didn’t live in such a bubble you wouldn’t even a need a list because you’d already know who they were.

It is hysterical that you seem to think you don’t already work with Republicans, don’t already interact daily with Trump supporters. The walls of your bubble are so thick you don’t even question for one moment that your politics aren’t shared by everyone. You feel free to talk to everyone around you as if they already agree with you. If you’d ever stopped to really get to know a wider range of people you might have discovered there are quite a few who don’t.

Not only that, those people aren’t the monsters and bigots you’ve imagined them to be but most likely hard-working, caring people. You probably already think some of them are hardworking, caring people…you just don’t know they’re Republicans.

You may be saying right about now, “I’m standing for justice and righteousness so if that’s a bubble, I’m all for it!”, but let me posit this to you. People who deliberately and self-righteously close their ranks in the name of justice typically end up being bigots. It’s what marks white supremacists. It’s what marks you, too.

But this isn’t just advice for you, Debra and Erick.  This is advice for every adult out there. We should all be at least willing to expand our circles. There is a comfort in intimately knowing people who challenge your ideas and make you angry. It conditions you to understand that differences can be overcome. It prepares you for the myriad of trying relationships you will have in your life, be it work, family or otherwise. It softens you.

You don’t have to change your mind about your ideas. You just have to be willing to change your mind about your neighbors. You just have to decide that everyone has something interesting and positive to offer you, until they prove otherwise.

Don’t live the rest of your lives so narrowly focused on this one man in this one time that you miss all the good people around you. Open your mind a bit, and maybe even your heart. Lead with curiosity rather than rage and see how it changes your view of those you think you could never love.

Debra, Erick…get out of that bubble. You guys must be smothering to death in there

Media Try to Cancel Drew Brees Over Religious Beliefs

One of the most upstanding people to ever play in the NFL is currently under assault.

His grave sin? Appearing in a video connected to Focus on the Family, that supposed horrible hate group that (gasp!) promotes family values and church going. They also support traditional marriage, so they must be ostracized and put on lists by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In the video, Brees (a Christian) simply encouraged students to take their bibles to school and live their faith. Contrary to popular liberal belief, that is in fact completely legal.

This led to heads exploding.

Deadspin, which is owned by Ted Cruz, went with a ridiculous story called Drew Brees Appears In Video for Gay Conversion Therapy Sickos, Doesn’t Understand What the Big Deal Is.

Last week, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees appeared in a brief video promoting “Bring Your Bible To School Day,” which, whatever. In itself, it’s probably a 3 on the scale of odd things an athlete can do with his free time. What’s actually frustrating—though frankly not too surprising—is Brees did the promo for Focus On The Family, which puts on the Bible Day and publishes the website that Brees’s video directed viewers to.

The horror.

Here’s a local New Orleans reporter asserting Brees is “problematic.” That’ll go over like a lead balloon in a city that loves him.

Then you had people just absolutely losing their minds, such as this blue check mark “journalist.”

I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest Brees has a job in the NFL because he’s one of the five best QBs to ever play the game and will own nearly every major record by the time he retires. The reflexive bringing up of Kaepernick by political activists who obviously haven’t the slightest idea about football is always amusing.

Former teammate Reggie Bush came to Brees’ defense.

This is all so stupid.

Whether one believes in traditional marriage or not (and as far as I know, Brees himself is pro-LGBT on that issue), the idea that you can never be connected to a group as mundane as Focus on the Family now is ludicrous. It shows just how badly conservatives have lost the culture war on this issue. It’s one thing to argue people can have different beliefs. It’s another to assert that certain people can’t hold their beliefs at all, and in the case of Christians who believe in traditional marriage, that’s simply not allowed anymore in the public sphere.

Brees will be fine, but this does show the brazenness with which cancel culture is operating. No one is off limits, not even for the smallest perceived “offense,” and you will be made to kneel or suffer the consequences. It didn’t matter that Brees is beloved in his city, is a philanthropist, and has always treated everyone with respect. A single video and they were after him.

I don’t know what the the solution to this is. I do know we can’t exist as a society in perpetuity operating this way.

New Info Explodes CNN’s Story That Stronger Gun Laws Would Have Prevented Odessa Shooter From Obtaining Gun

Westlake Legal Group gun-control-billboard-620x349 New Info Explodes CNN’s Story That Stronger Gun Laws Would Have Prevented Odessa Shooter From Obtaining Gun Universal Background Checks seth aaron ator Popular Culture Odessa TX shooting nra mass shootings Mainstream Media law Josh Campbell jim sciutto Jake Tapper Guns gun control laws gun control Front Page Stories Featured Story democrats David Harsanyi Dana Loesch CNN fact check Allow Media Exception

Gun control advocates have promoted the story that the Odessa, TX shooter who killed seven and wounded 25 last Saturday would not have been able to purchase a gun if the US required universal background checks.

CNN’s Josh Campbell tweeted: “Somebody who failed a federal background check was still able to legally purchase a gun in America. How does that make any sense? It’s literally insane.”

Then, CNN published an article claiming that the gun was purchased in a private sale, which doesn’t require a background check. Their source? A law enforcement official. That would be Campbell, who serves as the network’s law enforcement analyst. Campbell previously worked at the FBI.

Naturally, this claim was breathlessly repeated by others including Jim Sciutto who tweeted, “New: Odessa gunman purchased weapon in private sale, which does not require a background check – @joshscampbell reporting.” And by Jake Tapper, who wrote, “A law enforcement official tells CNN’s @joshscampbell that the Odessa TX mass murderer purchased his weapon in a private sale — which does not require a background check.”

As it turns out, an article in the Wall Street Journal explodes CNN’s entire narrative. The shooter, Seth Aaron Ator, purchased his AR-15 style rifle from a Texas man whom law enforcement officials believe illegally manufactured and sold the firearm. The whole “private” transaction looks to be illegal which means that more stringent universal background check laws would not have stopped Ator from obtaining a weapon.

The Journal reported:

Ator, 36 years old, was prohibited under federal law from owning a firearm because a court had previously found him mentally unfit, law-enforcement officials previously said. He had tried to buy a gun in January 2014 but failed because a nationwide criminal-background-check system flagged the mental-health determination by a local court and prevented the purchase, according to the officials.

While private gun sales are legal under federal law, it is a crime to be in the business of manufacturing or selling guns without a license. Law-enforcement officials suspect the man was buying various gun parts to build his own guns and then reselling them.

It has become increasingly popular for people to build AR-style rifles at home with parts purchased online.

Thus, stronger gun laws would not have prevented this shooting. Existing laws prevented Ator from purchasing a gun legally, so he found a way to obtain one illegally. Which is something that criminals who want a firearm would be likely to do. There are many ways to obtain guns illegally and a criminal will take the time to find one.

Federal investigators searched the suspected seller’s home on Wednesday and as of 7:30 am on Friday, there are no reports of what their findings were.

But CNN, just twelve hours ago, continued to promote their narrative.

The investigation into the gun sale highlights one of the loopholes in the patchwork of federal gun laws. Because the sale was a so-called private sale, the seller isn’t required to conduct a background check on the buyer, which is required in sales by licensed gun dealers.

Authorities are seeking to determine whether the sale violated federal law, which requires that sellers register as gun dealers if they’re buying and selling guns for profit and acting essentially as gun dealers.

Although it has not been confirmed or denied, I believe it would have been reported by now if the suspected seller had been a licensed gun dealer.

My question to CNN and all gun control advocates: After you take all the guns away from law-abiding citizens, how do you plan to take them away from criminals?

Answer: You’ll never be able to do it.

Three More Retailers Join Walmart and Kroger in Their Ban of Open-Carry Firearms, and CVS Redefines Itself

Westlake Legal Group colt-single-action-4394862_1280-620x412 Three More Retailers Join Walmart and Kroger in Their Ban of Open-Carry Firearms, and CVS Redefines Itself Uncategorized Front Page Stories Featured Story

On Tuesday, I covered Walmart’s request that customers no longer exercise their right to open carry inside its stores (here and here).

The reason? Despite a recent slaughter that saw 22 shot to death at the chain’s El Paso location, CEO Doug McMillon insisted that the employment of such right has “frightened or concerned [Walmart’s] associates and customers.”

Kroger did the same.

Well, now three more retailers have joined the call for no more open carry in their places of business: Welcome to the group, Wegman’s, Walgreens, and CVS.

So…what’s the move here?

Citizens utilizing open carry aren’t likely to keep a concealed rig in their trunk just for running into the store; therefore, these stores are trying to prevent good guys with guns being in their stores. The policies do nothing, of course, to deter criminals from carrying in their guns.

And how is it that a mass shooting — a murderous act on the part of armed bad buys against defenseless good guys — serves as inspiration for increased vulnerability?

Beyond requesting no more open carry, CVS went so far as to ask customers not to carry in any way.

CVS = Consummate Victims for Shooters?

Wegman’s explained their reason for not letting law-abiding customers wear protection — safety:

Walgreens can tweet, too:

Here’s a bit of Shannon Watts:

Someone loved Walgreens’s news:

Three cheers for safety!–

And what the heck?–

In fairness, I give Rstandiego high marks for comedy and creativity:

I bet he can whistle real good with that tooth.

CVS wants to sing:

A Chorus of Victims Shot?

I guess everyone has their own way of protecting themselves. And others.

For a growing number of stores, that method’s sure an interesting one.

UPDATE: CA City Councilwoman Defends Anti-ICE Video, Tells Lies From the Dais

Remember Simi Valley City Councilwoman Ruth Luevanos? She’s the one who posted a video to her *official* Facebook and Instagram pages on July 13 in which she sat in front of a defaced United States flag while accusing our government of being “in the business of running concentration camps” and arguing that ICE “raids” made our communities less safe. Oh, and she advised those who might be the target of that weekend’s planned ICE raids (who were fugitives subject to deportation orders) that they didn’t have to answer the door to ICE.

Here’s a memory refresher.

The video didn’t go over well with most Simi Valley residents. Those residents quickly organized and showed up en masse to the City Council meeting on July 29 to voice their displeasure. Luevanos made no attempt to apologize, instead opting to lie about ICE activity in the community – while seated on the dais in a televised city council meeting!

One of Luevanos’ supporters claimed in her comments to the council that immigrants in Simi Valley lived in fear and that ICE was conducting raids and sweeping up innocent people. Simi Valley Mayor Keith Mashburn asked the speaker if she could provide any dates, times, places of said activity so he could investigate and make sure that nothing untoward was happening. The supporter refused, and Luevanos stepped in with an alleged example.

“The manager of Vallarta supermarket told a friend of mine that last Friday there was an ICE raid right outside of Vallarta Supermarket and five immigrants were detained by ICE and arrested, and it has been a ghost town at Vallarta since then…I have also seen the ICE buses at the Shell gas station in the 18 years that I have lived here, several times….If you want confirmation, you can speak to the manager at Vallarta.”

Both Mashburn and another councilman spoke to the manager at Vallarta and to a representative from the corporate office, both of whom denied that such a raid ever took place.

Why would Luevanos tell such a lie, a lie that would put a community she claims to advocate for in unjustified fear? (We know the answer to that question, sadly.)

Many Simi Valley residents would have been willing to forgive and move on had Luevanos apologized that night, but after hearing that she had lied while carrying out her official duties the effort to organize a recall gained steam. (Disclosure: the author is a member of the recall committee.)

At the next council meeting, on August 12, Luevanos was served with a Notice of Intent to Recall petition signed by more than 20 registered voters. That same night, when she was questioned about her lie, Luevanos changed her story but stuck to the basic assertion – that there had been an ICE raid in Simi Valley.

She said:

“I do have — you know, I do have friends that are immigration attorneys. I practiced — you know, I was — I was in immigration law over 20 years ago when I was in law school, and many of my friends are still immigration attorneys.

“Due to attorney/client privileges they cannot come forth and state, but I do have an attorney who is a friend of mine who has stated that there were, in fact, ICE raids in the Vallarta vicinity and they are his clients. He cannot come here and say anything because that is an attorney/client privilege.

“So, you know, I — I just wanted to respond in that manner, to clarify that there is verification but unfortunately due to client/attorney privileges they cannot come forth. And for safety, especially given the El Paso shootings that were aimed and targeted at Latino immigrants, he’s even more fearful of coming forward.”

Of course, there’s no way to corroborate her story – and that’s by design.

Luevanos responded to the Notice of Intent, stating that she was simply informing people of their civil rights. The petitioners have filed a proposed recall petition with the City Clerk, and are awaiting approval before starting to gather signatures.

Gun debates usually are not fun because of the seriousness of the issue and because the default rallying cry of gun control activists is that defenders of the Second Amendment have “blood on their hands” and don’t care about the innocent people who are hurt or killed from gun violence.

While that is, of course, not remotely true, a bit of humor was to be had this week in the gun rights debate when Fox News commentator Geraldo Rivera piggybacked on a tweet made by unhinged liberal “comedian” Sarah Silverman about hunters. Here’s what Silverman tweeted:

Rivera went even further:

This… did not go over well with female gun owners, who lowered the boom on Rivera. As you can see from the screen grab below, the tweet was seriously ratioed:

We got all kinds of craziness, from Bernie promoting taxpayer funded abortions to cull the population and reduce emissions to Buttigieg lecturing on the morality of eating hamburgers. If you want the government to control every aspect of your life, these people are your ticket.

The question is, how many people were actually watching? If you guessed that Fox News, with just their regular lineup, would nearly triple CNN’s viewership, congrats.

Half of that probably came from airports and gyms. The numbers above are averages over the seven hour period and they aren’t particularly close to their competition. Even MSNBC’s raving conspiratorial lunacy almost doubled up CNN.

Perhaps the problem here isn’t content. Perhaps it’s just CNN? When Democrats go on Fox News or MSNBC for debates or “town halls,” they do much better in the ratings. When they go sit down with Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo, nobody watches. That’s not just a coincidence at this point. It really does seem as if the public have tuned out the gas-lighting, liberal network and certainly not without cause.

Or maybe it is content on some level? How many people really want to sit through even one hour (much less seven) of Democrats making wild claims and promising to destroy the economy? That’s not exactly riveting TV. It may also speak to the possibility that enthusiasm for this Democrat group is not nearly as high as the media would like you to believe.

There is one problem with some of the hot takes about last night’s town hall though. I’ve heard a lot of people saying Trump was the big winner. Can he really be the winner if no one was watching?

Trump Campaign Aide Who Filed Lawsuit Claiming He “Forcibly Kissed Her” Drops Suit After Video Tells A Different Story

Former Trump campaign aide Alva Johnson thought she’d cash in after filing a lawsuit claiming Trump had “forcibly kissed her” prior to a Tampa, FL rally in August 2016.

The lawsuit, filed in February 2019, alleged that Trump had “kissed her without her consent.”

Johnson told The Washington Post that “Trump grabbed her hand and leaned in to kiss her on the lips as he exited an RV outside the rally in Tampa on Aug. 24, 2016. Johnson said she turned her head and the unwanted kiss landed on the side of her mouth.”

She said, “I immediately felt violated because I wasn’t expecting it or wanting it. I can still see his lips coming straight for my face.” She said that the incident had been causing her “anguish.”

“I’ve tried to let it go,” she said, beginning to cry. “You want to move on with your life. I don’t sleep. I wake up at 4 in the morning looking at the news. I feel guilty. The only thing I did was show up for work one day.”

She sounds remarkably like Christine Blasey-Ford.

Johnson’s therapist, Lisheyna Hurvitz, wrote on October 27, 2016 that “she is having nightmares because of what happened.”

Johnson’s lawsuit sought “unspecified damages for the emotional distress. She also alleges she was discriminated against for her race. Johnson, who is black, claims she was paid less than her white male counterparts.”

The Washington Examiner reported that the incident did not stop her from twice applying for jobs in the Trump administration or from attending an inaugural ball. She was not offered a position but said that had no effect on her decision to sue.

It is notable that Johnson has caused some legal troubles of her own. The Washington Post reported:

In September [2018], acting on the request from Johnson and her relatives, a Georgia judge sealed the court records stemming from the years-ago family dispute. According to the records, Johnson’s half sister and her father, on behalf of a younger half sister, briefly obtained a temporary restraining order against Johnson in 2006. They alleged she was calling the younger sibling’s school and falsely claiming that the teenager was using drugs. The older sibling wrote that she fired Johnson from her business for using “company property” to arrange extramarital affairs for herself online.

Balanced people generally don’t behave like that.

Upon hearing the allegation, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that it was “absurd on its face. This never happened and is directly contradicted by multiple highly credible eye witness accounts.”

A district court judge dismissed Johnson’s lawsuit in June ruling that her complaint was “politically motivated” and granting her “30 days to file an amended version.”

In July, Trump’s lawyers released the video (below) which shows how innocuous their interaction was. In a roomful of campaign aides, Trump gives her a friendly kiss on the cheek thanking her for her help. Johnson is seen smiling back in what seemed (to me) to be a sincere manner. The contact between them lasted for three seconds. There was nothing sexual about it.

And today, Johnson has announced she is dropping her lawsuit. She told The Daily Beast, “I’m fighting against a person with unlimited resources, and repeatedly the judicial system has failed to find fault in his behavior. That’s a huge mountain to climb.”

Watch the video.
