The Media Seems To Be the Instigator of Political Violence in America Not the Victim

One of the repetitive themes that we hear from the media and from their echo chamber is that President’s Trump’s dismissal of the media as “Fake News” and “failing” is somehow a) and assault upon the First Amendment and b) encourages violence against the press. This whining is best encapsulated in a statement released earlier in the week by New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger after a meeting with President Trump:

I told him that although the phrase “fake news” is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists “the enemy of the people.” I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.

I repeatedly stressed that this is particularly true abroad, where the president’s rhetoric is being used by some regimes to justify sweeping crackdowns on journalists. I warned that it was putting lives at risk, that it was undermining the democratic ideals of our nation, and that it was eroding one of our country’s greatest exports: a commitment to free speech and a free press.

Throughout the conversation I emphasized that if President Trump, like previous presidents, was upset with coverage of his administration he was of course free to tell the world. I made clear repeatedly that I was not asking for him to soften his attacks on The Times if he felt our coverage was unfair. Instead, I implored him to reconsider his broader attacks on journalism, which I believe are dangerous and harmful to our country.

Sulzberger’s entire statement is nothing more than self-serving bullsh**. When one looks at the major stories retracted about the administration, it is clear that fact-checking and sourcing are no better in the national media than they are in any high school newspaper. And when one considers that 100% of the retracted stories have been negative, one is left wondering how all the mistakes can run in the same direction. As to the “enemy of the people” statement, I’m not a personal fan of it, but you can’t rationally expect someone who is daily vilified either as a Bozo or a Russian stooge or a Machiavelli who is taking us down the road to monarchy/dictatorship/despotism/rule-by-homeowner’s-association to simply ignore it either.

The idea that Third World despots were cringing in fear of a vibrant free press in the sh**hole countries they rule heard Trump say “enemy of the people” and “fake news” and suddenly decided to crack down is one of the goofiest ideas ever to come out of any newspaper publisher in the history of the Republic.

On the other hand, while I’m still waiting for the first news story of a reporter being targeted for death or injury by a GOPer–by the way, if you’re claiming Jim Acosta was threatened at the Trump rally in Tampa on Thursday, you have to explain why Acosta was tweeting about the great conversations he was having with the crowd when he wasn’t doing live shots–it appears to be indisputable that the unhinged and bizarre stories run by CNN and MSNBC are, in fact, giving rise to real violence and real threats of violence against Republican officials. And the incidents that have occurred have been by the left:

In June 2017, the GOP nearly lost a couple of dozen members to a deranged MSNBC fan, (yes, I know “deranged” and “MSNBC fan” is redundant):

Now people have been arrested in conjunction with credible threats of violence against two Republican members of Congress. Steve Scalise received a death threat from 63-year-old Carlos Bayon of Grand Island, NY:

“Hey listen, this message is for you and the people that sent you there. You are taking ours, we are taking yours. Anytime, anywhere. We know where they are,” the voicemails said, according to Buffalo’s ABC affiliate WKBW. “We are not going to feed them sandwiches, we are going to feed them lead. Make no mistake you will pay. Ojo por ojo, diente por diente (Spanish for “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth). That is our law and we are the majority. Have a good day.”

That could nearly be any contributor from MSNBC or CNN talking. And it wasn’t just bluster, prosecutors found items they called “very concerning” in Bayon’s home. He also threatened another member:

The very fact that a guy can be arrested for threatening two GOP House members and the media has decided to not even ask “what were his politics” is an example of the “name that party” game being played with domestic terrorism.

These threats and attacks, much like the mistakes by the press, run overwhelmingly in one direction. They seem to be the direct result of the media generating a frenzy, a veritable series of editorial board sanctioned Two-Minute Hates, against Republicans. The attack against GOP members of Congress practicing baseball and these credible threats did not spring up organically and they don’t exist in a vacuum. They are the logical outcome of media coverage that has taken direct lessons from Völkischer Beobachter in how to demonize the political opposition. Maybe, instead of bellyaching and caterwauling over the lack of respect shown to them by their perceived inferiors and hiding from imaginary bogeymen, the press should spend a few minutes critically examining its role in escalating political violence.

Let’s Talk About Enemies of the People While Steve Scalise’s Life Is Threatened Again

CNN reporter and White House press briefing gadfly Jim Acosta has had a great deal to say in the past several days about his (not unfounded) concerns that the political rhetoric in this country has ramped up over the last several years, and that news media has become a particularly delicious target for those seeking to place blame.

Here he is, righteously indignant following a contentious exchange with White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders wherein she wouldn’t disavow her boss’ words that the press is the enemy of the people. Acosta says they (the press) deserve to have those statements walked back.

Sanders, in a brilliant moment of strength and self-control, reminded Mr. Acosta that his profession has done a great deal of stoking the flames of that ramped up rhetoric, and that she, to her knowledge, was the only press secretary in history requiring Secret Service protection.

Acosta was apparently undeterred (as the later interview above proves.)

Honestly Acosta, while your point is well taken that the press is a target today for a lot of vitriol, with all due respect, you brought it on yourselves. And your preferred political allies on the left side of the aisle have helped, as word broke yesterday that Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), who was shot last year by a deranged Bernie bro while taking softball practice, has had his life threatened again.

A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly leaving threatening voicemails for two members of Congress, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.).

Sixty-three-year-old Carlos Bayon, who resides in New York, is charged with making threats across state lines.

Scalise, the No. 3 Republican in the House, was shot during the GOP’s congressional baseball practice last year and sustained near-fatal injuries.

“Whip Scalise is grateful to law enforcement for their actions. He will never forget how their heroism saved his life and those of his colleagues last year,” Scalise spokeswoman Lauren Fine told The Hill in a statement. “As he has said before, there is absolutely no place in our political discourse for violent threats.”

It’s fairly bizarre that, despite these new threats coming a month after Rep. Maxine Waters said this,…

…Acosta can still muster the lack of self-awareness to play the victim and post images from a Trump rally showing how much people have taken to disliking the press.

And, while perhaps it’s unfair to link Waters’ calls to shun Trump supporters to CNN’s general dislike for this administration, those Tampa rallygoers surely do link them. And for good reason, as Larry O’Connor points out at The Washington Times.

What Mr. Acosta doesn’t understand is that the anger and hostility and loathing he sees on the faces of  Trump supporters in his video is a reflection of the same hostility they see on the faces of anchors, reporters, and analysts on his network.

Night after night for years… decades, CNN has talked down to, belittled and ignored a wide swath of American voters. The condescending contempt reached a boiling point in the 2016 election when voters defied their betters and voted for the man CNN proclaimed to be unworthy of the American presidency.

On a nightly basis throughout the election, the network pummeled the small handful of pro-Trump pundits they featured.

Show after show featured Jeffrey Lord, Kayleigh McInerney, or Scottie Nell Hughes on a political panel usually facing off against upwards to seven debaters. The panel would be comprised of pro-Hillary Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans shouting-down the lone pro-Trump pundit.

With grace and patience Lord, McInerney, and Hughes gritted their teeth and endured personal insults, patronizing ridicule, and vile epithets. All the while, viewers saw these pundits as vessels representing their interests and their views.

It was not a fair fight and CNN, represented by their hosts and anchors, seemed to love it.

Which is why no one really cares what you think you deserve, Acosta. They see things like this…

and the delusion makes them really quite angry.

So, if you want to stop seeing those angry faces at rallies and want the administration to stop calling you out, start taking a little responsibility, tighten up, and get better at doing your actual job. In other words, put the bias and whining on hold and just report the news for a little bit. Everybody wins.

Major Upset in the Tennessee Gubernatorial Primary Hints Populism Is Alive and Well

Conventional wisdom had the race to succeed term-limited Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam a two-person contest between Representative Diane Black and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd. While Black and Boyd spent millions on ads attacking each other and, as far as I can tell, offering no coherent vision for the future, construction executive and political newcomer, Bill Lee, was running a tough campaign that was beneath the media radar.

“I have lived here all my life, and I can’t recall a candidate for governor ever putting on an event like this in our city.” Ricky D. Jones was speaking of republican candidate for governor Bill Lee’s 100th Town Hall held in Fairview Tuesday night.

Ricky D. Jones, who is seeking re-election to the Williamson County Commission, said, “He’s not doing this (running for governor) for money. He’s doing it because he’s got a servant’s heart.”

Addressing the recent negative ad attacks, Lee said, “Those ads reveal a lot more truth about the person running the ad than the person in the ad. A person willing to deceive – to say anything and do anything – to get elected. I don’t think that’s what Tennesseans want in a governor.”

Lee started his campaign visiting 95 counties in 95 days, followed by a Tractor Tour, Faith in Tennessee Tour, then the 100th Tennessee Town Hall in 100 days on Tuesday night in Fairview. Today, the campaign started a two-day Roadmap to Victory Tour with stops in Memphis, Jackson, Franklin, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Jonesborough and Van Buren County.

One hundred town hall meetings in one hundred days is hard work. And a personal endorsement from a trusted local official has a lot more impact than attack ads.

Two weeks ago, Lee suddenly shot to the top of the polls catching everyone by surprise and making him the target of attack ads.

We’re going to nominate the next Republican for governor. It means we look at the candidates’ records, including Bill Lee. All that talking, he left a few things out. That he was state president of a group that lobbied for amnesty for illegals. Donated to disgraced liberal Democrat Mayor Megan Barry, who supported sanctuary cities. And Bill Lee didn’t support Donald Trump in 2016. It’s our vote. We deserve to know a candidates’ record. Don’t you think?”

In the end, it wasn’t all that close:

What does this mean? I’m not an authority on Tennessee politics but it seems to me that the major takeaway here is that the populist fire that was lit in 2010 is still burning strong in Tennessee. Black’s endorsement by Pence probably meant less than Trump’s appearance at Marsha Blackburn’s rally in Nashville and pointedly not endorsing anyone. I can’t imagine Black’s campaign claiming she had Trump’s support when he didn’t endorse her –though it would have been damned easy — did her any favors with voters. With Trump out of the race, voters had a choice between two career politicians Jell-O wrestling and an outsider and successful businessman who seemed to be interested in the voters.

Everyone says that Lee is now the favorite to win the statehouse. We’ll see.
