The DOJ Finally Decides to Prosecute a Federal Official For Leaking

A bit of news broke the afternoon involving the arrest of a federal official.

Henry K. Frese, a DIA official, was charged with leaking classified information to two different journalists, one of which he was apparently sleeping with. Remember that the next time the media tell you are virtuous and upstanding they are.

Here’s the report via The Federalist.

An employee at the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency was arrested Wednesday on federal charges of leaking top-secret classified information to two reporters.

Henry Kyle Frese, a 30-year-old counter-terrorism analyst at the DIA, allegedly leaked classified information to two reporters whose identities were not unveiled by authorities in 2018 and this year, one of which Frese was romantically involved with, according to the indictment.

Federal authorities say one reporter wrote eight articles stemming from at least five leaks from Frese.

While that linked article doesn’t rely the names of the reporters in question, we know who they are. One of them is CNBC’s Amanda Macias, who was in the romantic relationship with Frese. The other was an NBC reporter named Courtney Kube.

Much of what was leaked involved intelligence on foreign weapons capabilities and tests, including Russia and China.

CNBC has already suspended Macias.

We should probably go ahead and congratulate her on her new gig at The New York Times. You know it’s coming.

You also won’t be surprised to learn that Frese’s social media showed him to be rabidly anti-Trump.

I’d assume we are less than a day away from this guy being turned into a #resistance hero and Trump being accused of targeting him for his political views.

While this leaker isn’t directly related to the Trump-Russia fiasco, it does at least show a willingness by the DOJ to pursue these cases when they feel they have enough evidence. This appears to be an open and shut case. Hopefully, there are many more to come in the near future.

“Failing Campaign”: In Tweet Response, Trump Pinpoints Exactly Why Biden Jumped On Impeachment Bandwagon

Over the course of the last 2-plus weeks, Joe Biden has skated right up to the impeachment line in campaign speeches and even in an op/ed he recently wrote about the July Trump/Zelensky phone call. But he had been resistant to actually call for Trump’s removal, and instead had implored (Democratic) members of Congress to get to work investigating the allegations.

In a speech in New Hampshire earlier today, Biden reversed course and joined the chorus of other Democrats in calling for Trump’s impeachment:

“Donald Trump has violated his oath of office, betrayed this nation and committed impeachable acts,” Biden told a crowd of supporters in Rochester, N.H. “To preserve our Constitution, our democracy, our basic integrity, he should be impeached.”

“That’s not only because of what he’s done. The answer to whether he has committed acts sufficient toward impeachment is obvious,” he continued.

“We see it in Trump’s own words. We see it in the texts from State Department officials that have been made public. We see it in his pulling much of the United States government into his corrupt schemes, individuals within the government, his appointees,” Biden said. “We have to remember that impeachment isn’t only about what the president has done. It’s about the threat the president poses to the nation.”

Watch Biden’s remarks below:

President Trump responded to Biden’s call with a couple of tweets. The first one being speculation as to why he finally jumped on board and the second one being a new ad on the Ukraine issue:

“Joe’s Failing Campaign gave him no other choice!” is the key line from Trump’s first tweet. It’s not something that the media has given a lot of attention to specifically, but it’s true.

Biden’s campaign is in trouble. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has caught up to him. Real Clear Politics now lists her as being ahead in polling averages.

His 3rd quarter fundraising haul was dismal for someone who remained ahead by double digits in polling for so long, including well before he declared his candidacy in April. Key big money donors are panicking, and recently held a closed door meeting to discuss what path to take going forward.

Biden has come off as unprepared to handle Trump’s sustained attacks on him regarding Ukraine. He has been seen snapping at reporters whose questions hit a little too close to home. His campaign has worked overtime to try and shut down negative media stories, interviews, and Trump campaign ads about the Ukraine issue.

Not only that, but to date he hasn’t done any sit-down interviews regarding the allegations about him, his son, and the firing of the Ukrainian prosecutor, which the elder Biden bragged about on video in 2018.

With all that in mind, what’s a guy who is suddenly on the ropes after months of having a comfortable lead in polling to do? Not just go for broke, but go for woke by way of doing what Sanders and Warren have already done: Call for impeachment.

Of course, in contrast to how they portrayed Trump’s call with Zelensky as politically opportunistic, the MSM won’t bother to point out how politically convenient it is for Biden to call for the ouster of the man who would be his opponent in the 2020 general election. But that’s another topic for another day.

Biden is still in the top tier to be sure, but his campaign has been wobbly in recent weeks and he now finds himself in the role of playing “catch-up” to Warren. Will joining the impeachment bandwagon put him on solid ground again?

Stay tuned…

Hillary Clinton Sure Sounds Like She Wants to Run Again

I’m still not going to bet on it happening, but Hillary Clinton is back in the spotlight and has been making some rather curious statements. Over the past few days, she’s twice hinted at wanting to run again. This comes in the midst of Joe Biden losing the national lead and Elizabeth Warren becoming the new front runner. Perhaps Hillary sees an opening?

Here’s one example.

I’m not sure how good her grasp of the English language is, but in order to do something “again,” you’d need to actually do it the first time around. Last I checked, and maybe I’m just wrong, she lost to Donald Trump and did not beat him in 2016.

Westlake Legal Group I-can-beat-him-AGAIN-620x391 Hillary Clinton Sure Sounds Like She Wants to Run Again Uncategorized Front Page Stories Featured Story

It’s cute that PBS and the media, in general, entertain this lunacy. I’m old enough to remember Hillary admonishing Trump to the cheers of the chattering class over not accepting the results of an election. It was going to destroy our democracy even. Now, she’s running around like a Stacey Abrams mini-me and the beltway clap like seals.

It’s actually not that obvious, as a recent polled showed her only tied 45/45 with him in a hypothetical rematch. That’s worse than all the other leading Democrat candidates. In any situation where she runs again, she’d almost certainly lose. People simply don’t like Hillary Clinton.

But her hint dropping didn’t stop there. She also replied directly to Trump on Twitter recently.

Oh, for the love of all things, please tempt her. I can’t explain how great such a rematch would be.

Will she actually try to ride in on a white horse and save her party from the socialist wing that’s currently favored to overtake it for the nomination? I’ve got my doubts. But she’s making noise about it that she wasn’t making a few months ago. If Joe Biden continues to falter, perhaps she sees an on-ramp to take advantage of. She’d almost immediately garner the big donor class (given that Warren is shunning them now that she’s already taken their money). Wall Street would love her, as they hate Sanders and Warren.

If anything, it’d make the 2020 race a lot more interesting.

Blizzard Now Facing Boycott, Criticism From US Lawmakers for Censoring Support for Hong Kong

Activision Blizzard, the folks behind such games as World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, is the latest company facing backlash after actions many believe were kowtowing to China.

Blizzard is now facing an avalanche of criticism after suspending a professional Hearthstone player at one of their tournaments and making him forfeit the $10,000 prize money he won.

The player, Chung Ng Wai, was interviewed during a live broadcast and expressed support for the Hong Kong protesters, saying, “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times,” a slogan of the protesters.

Not only did Blizzard punish the player as we previously reported, but they suspended him for a full year and also fired the casters who were doing the interview, judging them part of the offense. Blizzard said they will not work with them in the future.

Chung said he didn’t regret what he did. “Today, what I have lost in Hearthstone is four years of time,” Chung said, referring to the years he spent playing the game, according to the New York Times. “But if Hong Kong loses, it would be the matter of a lifetime.”

And Blizzard’s alleged original Weibo statement was troubling to say the least, saying they were very angry and disappointed by Chung’s statement and didn’t condone it in any way. They also added they would “always respect and defend the pride of our country.”

Weibo is one of the biggest social media platforms in China.

Blizzard is an American company. But you wouldn’t know it from the statements meant to appease the Chinese.

Blizzard players were not happy. They flooded the forums such as the one for World of Warcraft, bashing Blizzard’s decision and posting support for human rights, criticism of China and Blizzard, and support for Hong Kong. While Blizzard said their objection was to political expression on the broadcast, they reportedly deleted those posts while leaving up posts that supported their decision.

Some are now calling for a boycott of Blizzard.

Perhaps the most significant name calling for a boycott and cancelling his World of Warcraft subscription was Mark Kern, who led the team that created the game.

From NY Times:

In an interview, Mr. Kern said China was a major source of revenue for the gaming industry, and he knew he was “closing many doors” careerwise by speaking out on Twitter.

But Mr. Kern, who lived in Hong Kong as a teenager, said the company’s actions were “a deterioration of Blizzard values that really broke my heart.”

“It’s one thing to stay out of politics in games, quite another to take harsh, punitive actions designed to appease a government whose values are against what Blizzard has traditionally stood for,” he said.

Blizzard isn’t the only company embroiled. The NBA is also facing backlash for appearing to toady to the Chinese and apologize for a pro-Hong Kong statement made by Daryl Morey, the general manager of the Houston Rockets. South Park mocked China for their censorship and is now banned from Chinese platforms.

People are beginning to wake up to China’s influence curtailing free speech, but the encroachment has been going on for some time. It’s time for people to be loud and verbal that we, as Americans, will not tolerate it.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agreed and blasted Blizzard’s actions.

“Recognize what’s happening here. People who don’t live in #China must either self censor or face dismissal & suspensions,” Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida, wrote on Twitter. “China using access to market as leverage to crush free speech globally.”

Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, a Democrat, concurred, saying on Twitter that Activision Blizzard showed “it is willing to humiliate itself to please the Chinese Communist Party.”

Will The Supreme Court Get Involved in an Electoral College Issue From 2016?

Supreme Court SCOTUS Politics News Morning Briefing Impeachment of President Trump impeachment Government Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story Featured Post faithless electors elections donald trump democrats Constitution Conservatives Congress Colorado Campaigns Bill Clinton Allow Media Exception Academia 2019

The year 2016 was a doozy of an election on the national level. Donald Trump surprised a lot of people ( including myself) when he won the Presidency and made Hillary a two-time loser in POTUS runs. The reason why Trump was able to pull off this feat was because of two simple words.

Electoral College.

I have written here at Red State before about this…READ  Yuck: Colorado Decides To Bypass The Electoral College With National Popular Vote and the reason why it needs to be preserved.

Now a new challenge is possibly facing a showdown in the United States Supreme Court and it could radically alter how we have done elections in this country for over 240 years.

According to…CNN

Three presidential electors in Washington state who voted for Colin Powell in 2016 rather than Hillary Clinton and were fined under state law, are asking the US Supreme Court to take up their appeal and decide whether a state can bind an elector to vote for the state’s popular vote winner.

“The original text of the Constitution,” their lawyers argued in court papers filed Monday afternoon, “secures to electors the freedom to vote as they choose.”

If the Supreme Court agrees to hear the appeal of the so-called “faithless electors,” it could thrust the justices into yet another high-passion political fight in the heat of the 2020 presidential election. It comes as some predict that the volatile political atmosphere and disputes over redistricting could further emphasize the role of the Electoral College in the upcoming election.

The states have always run federal elections. However, with this new wrinkle, the states would pick people who then do not have to abide by the state’s very own rules if the faithless electors are ruled constitutional on a federal level.

The 10th amendment to the United States Consitution declares that…

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Even though people have argued that the 12th amendment was passed to deal with some complications in the process of federal elections it does not specifically say how states were to deal with the rules for selecting electors. That, at least in my mind would mean that the states get to pick the process.

However, can you imagine a scenario where 10 or 12 states have a different processes to pick and allow electors to do what they want? That would be an epic mess.

I am fascinated about this whole process and will keep an eye on what SCOTUS decides to do. I don’t think they have much choice to take it up and we will see soon enough.

Last week, I wrote about how desperate Joe Biden’s campaign is to censor any and all negative coverage related to his handling of Ukrainian policy during his time as Vice President.

They’ve warned cable news outlets not to give Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Guiliani any airtime, and also are pressuring those same outlets not to run Trump’s Ukraine ad.

Predictably, CNN didn’t need any prodding from the Biden camp before announcing they weren’t going to run the ad, but Fox News did get a threatening letter urging them not to run the Trump ad nor any ads like it. Fox responded by saying they weren’t “in the business of censoring ads from candidates on either side of the aisle.”

As it turns out, the Biden campaign also demanded Facebook remove the ad from their website but surprisingly enough they, too, said no:

Facebook has denied a request from former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign to remove an ad being run by President Trump’s reelection campaign that questions Biden’s role in the firing of a Ukranian prosecutor.

CNN reports that Facebook, in a letter, responded to a removal request made by Biden’s campaign by saying its decision to let the ad remain is “grounded in Facebook’s fundamental belief in free expression, respect for the democratic process, and belief that in mature democracies with a free press, political speech is already arguably the most scrutinized speech there is.”

The 30-second video from the Trump campaign has also appeared on Twitter and YouTube.

The video accuses Biden of offering military aid money to Ukraine if it agreed to remove the prosecutor investigating a company tied to his son, Hunter Biden.

Here’s the ad for those of you who haven’t seen it:

It’s clear that Biden is beyond frustrated that the issue won’t go away for him. To date he has not done any sit-down chats with any Democrat-friendly journalists in an effort to try and put the issue to bed. He has even shut down and snapped at reporters at press conferences if they ask questions that hit a little too close to home.

He doesn’t want to do any interviews about the subject and won’t release any transcripts related to his conversations with Ukrainian officials (unlike Trump, who did). Just what is he hiding?

Washington attorney, activist and writer Ted Frank tweeted this morning that “Hillary put pressure on Ronan Farrow to spike Weinstein story. (In contrast, Woody Allen refused.)”

In his new book, Ronan Farrow reveals that former film producer Harvey Weinstein tried to use his long-time relationship with Hillary Clinton to pressure him into spiking the Weinstein’s scoop.

Frank’s tweet includes the following excerpt:

In summer 2017, while Farrow was trying to lock down an interview with Clinton for his foreign policy book – while also still working on the Weinstein story – he received a call from Clinton’s publicist, Nick Merrill, who told him that the “big story”  Farrow was working on was a “concern for us.” Then, in September 2017, according to an email cited in the book, Weinstein wrote to Deborah Turness, the ex-president of NBC News who now runs NBC News International, to propose a docuseries on Clinton. “Your Hillary doc series sounds absolutely stunning,” Turness responded.

Weinstein’s tentacles even stretched to Farrow’s own estranged father. Days before the Times story broke, Weinstein is said to have called Allen on a film set in Central Park, soliciting advice about how to deal with his son. Allen declined. “Jeez. I’m so sorry. Good luck.”

So, why would Hillary Clinton, who often repeated that all women must be believed, go to bat for the notorious Harvey Weinstein? I guess for the same reasons she didn’t believe Juanita Broaddrick, Paula Jones, or Kathleen Willey. It didn’t serve her purposes. She’s not exactly one who is known for her principles.

Several days ago, she expected people to believe her when she said the gutsiest thing she ever did was to stay in her marriage.

Actually, a woman with any self-respect would have quietly left him and moved on. But, had she done so, she wouldn’t have had the Clinton machine behind her as she ran for the Senate in 2000. Nor would she have it for any of her future political endeavors.

No Hill, sorry, not buying it.

Even Woody Allen has higher principles than Hillary Clinton.

Rand Paul Stands Almost Alone On Backing Troop Withdrawal From Syria

As Turkey launches “Operation Peace Spring” with the goal of preventing what they call a “terror corridor” along the Southern border of the country, those who did not support the U.S.’s decision to slowly move troops out of Syria are held in contrast to the Senator who stands almost completely alone in backing President Trump’s move in the region: Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul.

Republicans who worry removal of troops might create a situation leading to an emboldened ISIS also claim concern for Kurdish fighters in the region who have fought alongside U.S. troops to battle terrorists.

Trump’s decision, which he correctly reminds the nation is one he ran on, is being viewed favorably by Paul, who, as a libertarian, prefers a more isolationist foreign policy.

The Kentucky Republican has been pushing Trump to take a less interventionist foreign policy approach for nearly three years, much to the chagrin and discomfort of most Republicans in Congress. And in the face of near unanimous condemnation from both parties in the wake of Trump’s Syria move, Paul is stepping in as the most vociferous defender of the president’s move and a notable beneficiary of his efforts to build an alliance with Trump after their ugly 2016 campaign attacks against each other.

With Republicans and Democrats alike piling on Trump and raising concerns that his decision could lead to Turkish attacks on U.S. Kurdish allies and a resurgence of ISIS, Paul declared that “most Americans would actually agree with President Trump that this is not a war that has our national interest at stake.”

“These are the people that have never met a war they didn’t like and have never met a war they wanted to end,” Paul told reporters on Tuesday afternoon, singling out the Cheney family as part of their long-running feud with Paul. “They’ve been wrong about everything in foreign policy for the last several decades.”

Paul has engaged in foreign policy twitter disputes with GOP Rep. Liz Cheney (MT) of late, accusing her father Dick Cheney, former Vice President under George W. Bush, of the same warmonger spirit he says he sees with the “war caucus.”

As Turkey made its announcement of their intent to secure the southern border, reports of air strikes began leaking out noting Turkish jets “began pounding suspected positions of Syrian Kurdish forces in the town of Ras al Ayn, the Associated Press reported, citing Turkish media and Syrian activists.”

President Donald Trump caught a lot of flack from media when early onion his tenure, he insisted that NATO members should pay their own way, that the U.S. shouldn’t always have to be carrying the organization when other countries weren’t paying into it according to what they had agreed.

Media called his criticisms an attack on NATO and tried to link it to their Trump-Russia collusion narrative.

But as the Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, later noted, Trump’s tough talk forced other countries to come across and at least up their contributions, thus, in his words, making NATO stronger. He praised Trump’s efforts to get everyone to pay their own way.

From USA Today:

President Donald Trump “is committed to NATO” and deserves credit in obtaining $100 billion more in defense spending for the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, said Sunday.

“President Trump has been very clear: He is committed to NATO. He stated that clearly just a few days ago and also at the NATO summit in July,” Stoltenberg said on “Fox News Sunday.”

That’s thinking like a Republican and a business person.

Now, let’s compare that with thinking like a Democrat and believing there’s an endless pot of money from which you can plumb.

Let’s look at the news today that the U.N. may run out of money by the end of the month.

From Yahoo:

The United Nations is running a deficit of $230 million, Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday, and may run out of money by the end of October.

In a letter intended for the 37,000 employees at the UN secretariat and obtained by AFP, Guterres said unspecified “additional stop-gap measures” would have to be taken to ensure salaries and entitlements are paid.

“Member States have paid only 70 per cent of the total amount needed for our regular budget operations in 2019. This translates into a cash shortage of $230 million at the end of September. We run the risk of depleting our backup liquidity reserves by the end of the month,” he wrote.

Their response to being $230 million in the red? Maybe now we should cut down on expenses and restrict travel to “only essential activities.” So they were traveling for “non-essential activities” while they were continuing to rack up that deficit?

And unlike Trump, when member states refused to come across with the money they were obligated to pay, the U.N. simply let the members get away with it.

Of course, it’s always been the U.S. who has contributed the most, despite being the state who needs the U.N. the least. The U.S. pays 22 percent of their operating budget which is about $5.4 billion. It’s been the U.S. whose provided them a safe haven here.

Meanwhile their leadership has been staunchly anti-American for years.

The only president who has seemed to care about that, at least recently, has been Trump who has held their feet to the fire and tried to condition aid, and whose last ambassador, Nikki Haley, stood up to their frequent anti-American moves.

If they go under, one has to wonder what would be lost and how that would change the landscape.
