ESPN Cowers Like a Scared Dog On Hong Kong

Westlake Legal Group Untitled-1-17-620x354 ESPN Cowers Like a Scared Dog On Hong Kong tweet SCARED Rachel Nichols Politics NBA Morey memo Hong Kong Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story ESPN Deadspin Cowering communists China Allow Media Exception

Earlier in the week, we saw the Houston Rocket’s GM send out a social media post simply encouraging people to support democracy in Hong Kong. That led to the thin-skinned Chinese losing their minds. Worse, it led to the NBA folding like a cheap suit, essentially apologizing to the communist state.

In what was probably one of the only unifying episodes on Twitter in years, the dumpster fire that is the NBA was roundly condemned, but then something amazing happened. ESPN, which has prided itself on its wokeness and speaking political truth to power, suddenly decided they aren’t going to be political anymore. Whatever it takes I guess?

Unfortunately, I have to link to Deadspin here, but their wokeness is at least sincere, so they covered the issue and obtained a memo from ESPN on the matter.

If you paid attention to ESPN channels yesterday, you saw the network repeatedly attempt to grapple with the story of Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey creating an international incident after tweeting and then deleting his support for pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong. You heard talking head after talking head castigate Morey for sending the tweet, speculation over whether he’d keep his job, speculation about the sincerity of his convictions, discussions about what this meant for the Rockets’ bottom line, the observation that it’s unreasonable to expect for-profit companies like the NBA to act morally, and the non-take that cowing to China is simply the cost of doing business in China.

What you didn’t hear was much discussion about what is actually happening on the ground with protestors in Hong Kong, why they’re protesting, or any other acknowledgment of China’s political situation, past or present.

This could be because Chuck Salituro, the senior news director of ESPN, sent a memo to shows mandating that any discussion of the Daryl Morey story avoid any political discussions about China and Hong Kong, and instead focus on the related basketball issues. The memo, obtained by Deadspin, explicitly discouraged any political discussion about China and Hong Kong. Multiple ESPN sources confirmed to Deadspin that network higher-ups were keeping a close eye on how the topic was discussed on ESPN’s airwaves.

Well, isn’t that convenient. The moment being political means they might have to stand up to the Chinese, they suddenly get cold feet.

This is the same network that compared fighting the transgender bathroom bill in North Carolina to the civil rights movement. It’s the same network that has had multiple, high level personalities personally go after Trump and call him a racist. They have shows dedicated specifically to political takes on sports. They praised Kaepernick’s stunt, and to this day, you’ll find many of them still commenting on how brave and stunning it was.

But standing up for democracy in Hong Kong? That’s a bridge too far I guess.

What this shows is that these people are one-sided cowards. In fact, Rachel Nichols, who made the aforementioned comments on the transgender bathroom issue, did a glowing live spot from China the day after the news broke on Morey’s tweet. No mention of what China had done or that the controversy was brewing. She bowed before her communist masters and their buckets of cash.

Clay Travis, one of the more sane voices in sports, lambasted her, ESPN, and the NBA for it.

What’s so sad here is that even in the face of all this folding, China is still throwing a fit. They pulled all preseason NBA games off the airwaves and stated that free speech doesn’t cover anything that challenges “national sovereignty.”

In conclusion, it’s easy being woke when you are slapping at Trump. Kneeling for the national anthem carries no risks. But when push comes to shove, the wokest among us cower like scared dogs.

On the Economic Rise of China, Part I

China represents an existential threat to the national security of the US in terms of growth of military capabilities but more importantly in the economic realm as they pursue their “Made in China 2025” and Belt-Road initiatives.  Fortunately, more and more people are recognizing the threat, thanks to the laser-like focus of the Trump Administration on resetting the trade balance with China. And the ongoing ChiCom threats against the Hong Kong protectorate showcase Beijing’s threat to the entire region.

There are a number of voluminous and detailed reports produced by US government entities over the past few years that are intended to educate Americans. These reports contain a LOT of quite shocking information that we have ignored for a generation or more. However, in the fast-paced and social media-driven American culture, few people other than academics and national security professionals seem to take the time to truly read and understand the Chinese threat, especially in the economic realm. The purpose of this series is to elucidate the contents of one of those reports in “bite-sized chunks” that are more easily digestible in order to convey a better understanding of the Chinese economy and its long-term challenges to the US and the world.

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) works exclusively for the United States Congress, providing policy and legal analysis to committees and Members of both the House and Senate, regardless of party affiliation. As a legislative branch agency within the Library of Congress, CRS has been a valued and respected resource on Capitol Hill for more than a century. CRS is well-known for analysis that is authoritative, confidential, objective and nonpartisan. Its highest priority is to ensure that Congress has 24/7 access to the nation’s best thinking. CRS recently produced a report entitled, “China’s Economic Rise: History, Trends, Challenges, and Implications for the United States.” This report is the basis for this series.

Let’s get started with the first bite-sized chunk; here is the report’s summary:

Prior to the initiation of economic reforms and trade liberalization nearly 40 years ago, China maintained policies that kept the economy very poor, stagnant, centrally controlled, vastly inefficient, and relatively isolated from the global economy. Since opening up to foreign trade and investment and implementing free-market reforms in 1979, China has been among the world’s fastest-growing economies, with real annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth averaging 9.5% through 2018, a pace described by the World Bank as “the fastest sustained expansion by a major economy in history.” Such growth has enabled China, on average, to double its GDP every eight years and helped raise an estimated 800 million people out of poverty.

China has become the world’s largest economy (on a purchasing power parity basis), manufacturer, merchandise trader, and holder of foreign exchange reserves. This in turn has made China a major commercial partner of the United States.

China is the largest U.S. merchandise trading partner, biggest source of imports, and third-largest U.S. export market. China is also the largest foreign holder of U.S. Treasury securities, which help fund the federal debt and keep U.S. interest rates low.

As China’s economy has matured, its real GDP growth has slowed significantly, from 14.2% in 2007 to 6.6% in 2018, and that growth is projected by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to fall to 5.5% by 2024.

The Chinese government has embraced slower economic growth, referring to it as the “new normal” and acknowledging the need for China to embrace a new growth model that relies less on fixed investment and exporting, and more on private consumption, services, and innovation to drive economic growth. Such reforms are needed in order for China to avoid hitting the “middle-income trap,” when countries achieve a certain economic level but begin to experience sharply diminishing economic growth rates because they are unable to adopt new sources of economic growth, such as innovation.

The Chinese government has made innovation a top priority in its economic planning through a number of high-profile initiatives, such as “Made in China 2025,” a plan announced in 2015 to upgrade and modernize China’s manufacturing in 10 key sectors through extensive government assistance in order to make China a major global player in these sectors. However, such measures have increasingly raised concerns that China intends to use industrial policies to decrease the country’s reliance on foreign technology (including by locking out foreign firms in China) and eventually dominate global markets.

In 2017, the Trump Administration launched a Section 301 investigation of China’s innovation and intellectual property policies deemed harmful to U.S. economic interests. It subsequently raised tariffs by 25% on $250 billion worth of imports from China, while China increased tariffs (ranging from 5% to 25%) on $110 billion worth of imports from the United States. Such measures have sharply decreased bilateral trade in 2019. On May 10, 2019, President Trump announced he was considering raising tariffs on nearly all remaining products from China. A protracted and escalating trade conflict between the United States and China could have negative consequences for the Chinese economy.

China’s growing global economic influence and the economic and trade policies it maintains have significant implications for the United States and hence are of major interest to Congress. While China is a large and growing market for U.S. firms, its incomplete transition to a free-market economy has resulted in economic policies deemed harmful to U.S. economic interests, such as industrial policies and theft of U.S. intellectual property.

This series will provide background on and the history of China’s economic rise; describe its current economic structure; provide a measure of the size of the Chinese economy; examine the impact of foreign direct investment and outflows in China; summarize Chinese merchandise trading patterns; identify the challenges China faces to maintain economic growth; and discuss the challenges, opportunities, and implications of China’s economic rise for the US and the rest of the world.

The dilemma with evaluating the Chinese economy is that the ChiComs obfuscate their economic date despite having joined the World Trade Organization in 2001. This step was to have “opened China’s financial books,” but the renminbi/yuan remains a closed currency and highly subject to manipulations – which is exactly what the Chinese do to further their goals of economic expansion and domination, consistent with their “Made in China 2025” and “Belt-Road” initiatives. More on them later in the series.

The end.

President Trump is adding another politician turned pundit onto his legal staff as he heads for a showdown with the Impeachment Posse on Capitol Hill. Former South Carolina Representative Trey Gowdy has agreed to join the fight according to Axios

President Trump has asked former South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy to assist him with legal advice from outside the White House and Gowdy has agreed, though details are yet to be finalized, according to people familiar with the situation.

Where it stands: As the president faces an impeachment inquiry, Gowdy can offer Trump another opinion on where legal theory meets political reality, a person familiar told Axios’ Margaret Talev, adding that his Benghazi experience is seen as an asset. Gowdy is expected to advise the White House behind the scenes and appear on TV to advocate on behalf of the president.

At least one reporter from the New York Times is not buying this until POTUS 45 tweets about it

The president has yet to tweet about hiring Gowdy.

Gowdy is often effective on the T.V. side of things which is the main reason Trump inc probably wanted to hire him. Personally, I tuned him out after the Benghazi hearings when the GOP had control of the House of Representatives and nothing was done to anyone in the Obama administration for the awful debacle. Great speeches were made but nothing else.

This is another sign though that the White House is gearing up for an impeachment battle after the past week. ( READ: BREAKING: Trump Tells Democrats In Congress, Not Cooperating With Your Impeachment Inquiry.

Let’s see if they can get this circus done before CHRISTmas to make sure these aggrieved Democrats can make it home to panhandle off this debacle.

Leftist Concerns over ‘Joker’ Show They Miss it is Commentary on Leftist Intolerance

Promotional screen shot from ‘Joker’, courtesy Warmer Brothers Pictures

The very people complaining about the impact of the film are the same voices who chased the director into making the film.

CNN has been one of the louder voices in the chorus of hand-wringers warning of the possible impending violence this film may inspire. “The ‘Joker’ hit movie theaters this week despite a wave of criticism that it glorifies a killer and could encourage copycat attacks nationwide” says the outlet, almost sounding hopeful some kind of calamity might transpire.

This echoes comments of this sort which have been made for well over a month now, but it ignores the cinematic history of this type of character. The hysterics have been loud enough that the studio releasing the film, Warner Brothers, prevented reporters from interviewing the cast during its red carpet premiere. It has all been a ridiculous enterprise, and it exposes a massive contradiction within the industry.

SEE ALSO: “Concern over ‘Joker’ ignores historical variations of the character“.

I discussed this issue on last week’s broadcast of “Disasters In The Making” with writers Paul Young and Christian Toto. While critics and social activists have been intoning grave concerns this manages to become a paradox within Hollywood. All of these voices predicting or promising a spark of impending violence are in direct opposition to the knee-jerk reaction from this same group when legitimate violence has taken place and anyone dares suggest Hollywood was the cause. As recently as this week actor Robert DeNiro was getting angry at the suggestion made by Donald Trump that acts of violence could be attributed to movies.

So we are in a curious nexus where it is acceptable to blame impending violence on a film, but it is outlandish to attribute actual violence to film. If anyone can untangle that knot, by all means, let me know how.

What is even more vexing for the left is how they are upset with Todd Phillips, the director of “Joker”. Phillips is a curious figure to be behind this type of movie, as his filmography is populated with ribald comedies. (“Road Trip”, “Starsky And Hutch”, and the “Hangover” franchise are his most notable efforts.) Much of that outrage results from the fact that he is upset with them. “Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture,” Phillips recently told Vanity Fair. When responding to why comedies do not work as well in Hollywood he offered up, “I’ll tell you why, because all the f***ing funny guys are like, ‘F*** this s***, because I don’t want to offend you.’”

As a result, Phillips moved away from his core source material and decided to address the very mob mentality in his allegorical take on a comic book villain origin story. He decided to take on the hectoring hordes.

“With all my comedies—I think that what comedies, in general, all have in common—is they’re irreverent. So I go, ‘How do I do something irreverent, but fuck comedy? Oh I know, let’s take the comic book movie universe and turn it on its head with this.’ And so that’s really where that came from.

Therein lies the irony. The outrage experts on the left who are dismayed with what is being portrayed in “Joker” are seemingly unaware they are in fact being addressed directly in the film. The “how dare he!” experts are upset over a product they have themselves inspired with their “How dare you!” attitude towards the culture.

The only thing funnier than seeing them becoming satirized in a drama on screen is seeing them missing the point entirely.

An Official Was “Visibly Shaken” and “Frightened” About the Trump-Ukraine Call and It Exposes Something

Westlake Legal Group AS An Official Was “Visibly Shaken” and “Frightened” About the Trump-Ukraine Call and It Exposes Something whistle-blower Visibly Shaken. Frightening Ukraine Call Trump-Ukraine Politics Nancy Pelosi Laughable john bolton Joe Biden impeachment Front Page Stories Front Page Featured Story donald trump democrats Allow Media Exception adam schiff

If you are starting to feel like the waters are so muddy at this point that it’s hard to even grasp what exactly the Democrats are doing on Trump-Ukraine, you aren’t the only one. After Trump released the transcript without a fight, it essentially blew up their script. Like the Kavanaugh hearings, Schiff and company clearly expected to be able to slow roll out multiple “whistle-blowers” in order to build a narrative of there simply being too much smoke to not be a fire.

With the transcript out though, we’ve all read it. We know what is there and what’s not, which is why a story yesterday (which was first covered by Nick Arama here at RedState) left me scratching my head.

The whistleblower said that he made a record of the conversation he had with a White House official concerning the call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.”

The memo describes the official as saying the call was ‘crazy,’ ‘frightening,’ and ‘completely lacking in substance related to national security.’”

Had the transcript not been released, this would have been gold for Democrats. Much like the Mueller leaks, such a memo on its own completely lacks context and provides no actual evidence about whether the “official” in this case was honestly describing what happened.

The problem? We have the transcript.

Anyone that reads what’s in that call and is “visibly shaken” probably should go curl into the fetal position and just hang out a while. Further, it seems to me that it’s pretty scary that such people are actually in charge of large parts of our national security apparatus. This is an official that’s expected to stand up to China and Russia, but they are physically affected by a phone call that can only be described as mundane at best? At this point, if you are reading this, you’ve likely read the transcript. What exactly is in there that is “frightening?” Trump only mentions Biden in a passive way, never making a demand, making no threats, and not bringing up aid at all. Perhaps you think that’s bad, but objectively, it’s simply not what it was first described to be.

Of course, some are rooting for this official to be something more than he/she probably is.

If this is John Bolton saying this stuff, then Trump 100% did the right thing by getting rid of him. But I don’t believe that. Bolton may have had his differences with the President given his hawkish nature, but he certainly has more mental fortitude than a preteen girl. Or at least I’d hope he does.

But here’s what this all shows us. As I said in the beginning of this piece, the Democrat strategy on the matter was completely blown up when Trump released the transcript. They really expected to push out multiple complaints and memos, all painting a dire picture, without having to actually show their work. Now that we have the call, all these second and third hand accounts are falling flat. It was the Kavanaugh playbook all over again, except they can’t successfully run it now.

No doubt, there will be more “whistle-blowers” that come forward, all represented by this partisan law group that pays them for their complaints, but who cares? We have the call. This is why you are seeing Democrats shift to obstruction arguments and being scared to death to actually vote on impeachment. Trump called their bluff and they are scrambling.

Investigative reporter John Solomon appeared on “Hannity” Tuesday night to present new documents which show Ukraine had reopened an investigation into Hunter Biden’s payments from Burisma four months before the July 25th conversation between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

This information was conveniently omitted from the whistleblower’s complaint because it pretty much destroys both his case as well as the basis for this farsical impeachment inquiry.

In fact, I think the White House now has enough evidence to turn the guns on House Democrats for initiating this charade in the first place. Here is what Solomon, who has just joined Fox News as a contributor, told Hannity:

I can confirm to you tonight that the Ukrainian government was planning to reopen the Burisma investigation. This was long before the President ever imagined having a call with President Zelensky. In fact, it was before President Zelensky was even elected. This is a significant shift in the factual timeline. This is information that was omitted from the whistleblower’s complaint. Let me tell you what we learned today.

The U.S. government had open source intelligence and was aware that NABU [National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine], an FBI-like agency in Ukraine that fights corruption – in fact, it was started by Joe Biden – that it had reopened an investigation into Burisma, its owner Zlochevsky and unusual transactions in the Burisma accounts in February 2019. On March 28, 2019, the Prosecutor General’s office agreed to that request to open an investigation and they filed a 15-page notice of suspicion alleging that there may be illicit funds that were running through Burisma from 2010 all the way through 2015, that’s important, because Hunter Biden’s on the board for two of those years, 2014-2015. And specifically, that notice of suspicion said they were looking at the possibility that the $3.4 million paid to Hunter Biden’s firm may have been part of the illicit funds that were moving through the company. A month later, in April, the Prosecutor’s Office, open source intelligence again, the U.S. government officials confirming they were aware of this request of another investigative agency in Ukraine for assistance in going through these bank records. That is a significant change in the timeline. It was omitted from the whistleblower’s complaint and the question is, did he not know it or did he exclude it because it didn’t fit the narrative he was trying to write. That’s a question for Congress to answer.

There’s another oddity that comes out of the records. If you can put that back up on the screen. These are bank records from Hunter Biden’s firm. Hunter Biden and Joe Biden keeps saying he was getting $50,000 a month. There’s only one thing wrong with that. The FBI raided Devon Archer’s office and his bank records, in an unrelated case in 2016, they show transfers of $166,000 a month and as high as $220,000 in one month going into Hunter Biden’s and Devon Archer’s firm. That’s a lot more than $50,000 and it was one of those things that piqued the Ukrainian prosecutor’s interest into reopening the case in March of 2019. The size of the money was much larger than Hunter Biden and Joe Biden has been saying.

This blows up the Democrats most recent attempt to take down the President. It is just the latest in a series of facts that belie the bogus narrative they’ve spent the last three weeks promoting. At this point, it has to be dawning on, at the very least independent voters, and maybe even some moderate Democrats that House leadership is engaged in a corrupt, vicious, high stakes effort to frame the President.

What more is there to say?

Watch the video. (Relevant segment begins at 15:30.)

NOW, this is really turning into a brawl.

On Tuesday a letter was received by the Office of Congressional Ethics in regards to the behavior of Congressman Adam Schiff who is a Democrat from California and also the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The letter was sent by the Tea Party Patriots Action and they want Adam to be taken to the woodshed.

According to Fox News

“Rep. Schiff has repeatedly made false statements to the public and the media in his capacity as Ranking Member and now Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence,” Jenny Beth Martin, the honorary chairman of the Tea Party Patriots, wrote in her letter.

Martin added: “These instances of blatantly false and misleading statements – as well as Rep. Schiff’s ongoing misuse of his power and authority on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence to advance his partisan political interests, his fabrication of testimony, and his overt efforts to seek incriminating information from Ukrainian sources about the President of the United States – bring into question Rep. Schiff’s suitability to continue to serve as Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, in particular when the critical subject that Rep. Schiff is making much of relates to the Ukraine.”

Schiff was a constant voice howling to anyone in the media during the Russian collusion investigation that you just had to wait until Robert Mueller and his team turned over that report. Even after Mueller released the report and found no collusion he still was saying that “Undoubtedly there is collusion,” AFTER A.G. Barr released a summary that the report later verified that there was not.

You might think he would have learned from that debacle and have taken a step back and relax.

Nope.

As Jenny Beth Martin indicates from her letter above, it seems Chairman Schiff might have totally missed the life lesson here and double-downed on his Trump Derangement Syndrome. Hopefully, his Congressional gold plated health care plan covers that.

Schiff embarrassed himself with his made-up conversation that he read aloud last week during a meeting of his committee, where he imagined a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump. Schiff later claimed it was meant as satire but he gave no indication of that before or after the reading of it. Also, no one from Saturday Night Live picked up the phone to offer him a job so you know that is was really bad and was not even remotely funny.

Also, his getting duped by two Russian Howard Stern wanna be’s doing a  prank caller about getting compromising photos of Trump shows that he is in way over his head. That does not bode well for someone who sees a lot of TOP SECRET material vital to this nation’s national security.

That Nancy Pelosi has not yet pulled the plug on his antics is surprising. This also indicates that while Pelosi was trying to slow-walk impeachment talk after the Russian collusion story failed, she is now double-downed to go after Trump in this manner. Even if she has to stomach the misfires of Adam Schiff.

The O.C.E. is supposed to be one of those arms in the legislative branch that operates as an impartial referee and calls as they see it. I would really love to say that this will get a fair shake and Schiff will be punished for his odd behavior over the past two years. Unfortunately, I don’t have the confidence that will happen.

Hopefully, more groups will follow the T.P.P. lead and demand that some sort of action is taken to reign in this weird behavior of Schiff.

If not he will continue to try out his comedy routine on deadly serious matters to this country and no one will be laughing about the result.

Syrian Withdrawal Part III: The Current Battlespace

Westlake Legal Group kurds-territory-620x760 Syrian Withdrawal Part III: The Current Battlespace Uncategorized Trump Syria withdrawal Syria republicans Politics Kurds Front Page Stories Front Page Foreign Policy Featured Story elections donald trump democrats Allow Media Exception
This is Part III of IV. This part will examine the the current state of the rest of the region as it relates to the ongoing civil war in Syria. As in most cases where there is a mix of ethnic groups, some hostile to each other, competing ideologies and as always changing loyalties, this part of the World poses some special challenges. Some have called this a “no-win” situation for the United States. I wouldn’t personally go that far, but this area can get fairly complex. What follows is a by-no-means-comprehensive overview of the main actors in the area from a U.S. perspective. It is meant to give a little more analytical depth than merely, “Trump is abandoning our allies!”

First and foremost, the U.S. must consider Turkey. Long a NATO ally, Turkey, along with Greece was the guardian of our Southern flank when our main concern was a massive assault by the Soviet Union. Since the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and his replacement by a militant theocracy inimical to U.S. interests throughout the region, Turkey has been a fairly consistent ally, generally supporting U.S. interests. Then along came President Recep Erdogan.

Erdogan, like his predecessors, has had to deal with an active insurgency, fomented by a banned organization and recognized terrorist group, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). The U.S. has also determined the PKK to be a terrorist group. To this point, the U.S. and Turkey are on the same page…but there’s still Erdogan.

Recep Erdogan has a long history of support for Islamist Organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood. This appeared to be fine with the U.S. under the Obama administration, as the Brotherhood was the main organization that toppled a key U.S ally, Egyptian President Mubarak. Post Mubarak and under the control of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt was in turmoil until finally President Al Sisi was able to take over and restore order, stop the killing of Christians, the destruction of their churches and restore relations and cooperation with Israel..and the United States.

In addition to his support for the Muslim Brotherhood, Erdogan has some other shall I say, aspirations. Retired Navy Captain, Intelligence Officer and Red State Front Page Writer, Stu Cvrk puts it this way

What Erdogan is seeking through the deal with President Trump: In exchange for taking and dealing with all the captured ISIS terrorists – including a number of Europeans who volunteered to fight with ISIS that the EU countries don’t want back – Erdogan gets essentially free reign to deal with the Kurds in Turkey and Syria who are a primary roadblock to his political goal of consolidating the region into an Islamic State along the model proclaimed by the Muslim Brotherhood.

That is what Erdogan wants. What does Ayatollah Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran want? A number of things. Of primary interest to the United States, Khamenei wants to oppose pretty much anything the U.S. wants to achieve in the area and elsewhere. To him, the United States is still, “The Great Satan.” Long term, as the head of a Shia majority Muslim nation, he’d like to expand the Shia brand of Islam (along with Iranian influence if not outright control) throughout the region, especially into areas like Iraq which although 68% Shia, has until recently, been ruled by the Sunni minority. Iraq would seem to be a prime target for Khamenei’s long term aspirations. This brings us to Iraq. Simply put, The United States does not wish Iraq to become a failed state vulnerable to becoming an Iranian client.

Syria, except for its long term threat to Israel (of late, not as overt) is in and of itself, not as critical to U.S. interests. What does make it of current interest, is the recent Russian expansion of its military footprint there. That expansion mind you, can be directly tied to U.S. intervention in what had been an internal Syrian affair. Our meddling encouraged President Bashar Al Assad to seek outside assistance to remain in power in the face of a revolt that need up being supported by U.S. led efforts, up to and including U.S. ground troops in his country. Assad’s objective? Simple. Survive and remain in power. Ultimately, he might have been convinced to enjoy a lavishly funded retirement in exile, but with Russian support, he’s far less likely to take that option now.

Back to “The Kurds.” The one thing common to all three of the main Kurdish groups discussed in Part II of this series, is that they all want a Kurdish autonomous homeland and to one degree or another, they are willing to fight for it. Part II noted the major differences between the three main groups. As noted there, the most difficult part of the Kurdish puzzle appeared to be the Syrian Kurds. Tony Perkins of the Family Research council offered up the following

It is an oft-overlooked story that in the wake of ISIS’s genocide, the Kurdish-led SDF established a semi-autonomous area in Northeast Syria in which religious freedom flourished and religious minorities were protected. Pluralism thrived and democracy began to gain a foothold. This area stood in stark contrast to the surrounding countries where religious persecution is rampant. This beacon of freedom had the additional effect of serving as a bulwark against Iran, which would otherwise seek to gain influence in Syria, expanding its regional power and threatening Israel and the United States’ allies in the Gulf.

With Turkish President Erdogan’s announcement of his pending invasion, all of this is now at risk.

This enclave, appearing to mirror in a smaller scale, the Iraqi Kurdish Autonomous Region, could be something to build on. This of course, if we can stop Turkey’s misguided attempts to destroy it.

Although in absolutely no shape, manner, form or fashion a comprehensive evaluation, this is generally how I see the current battle space. These are many (certainly not all) of the major parts and pieces that the United States must come to grips with in resolving the Syria issue.

Part IV will offer some possible solutions that could possibly extract us from President Obama’s ill-advised Syrian adventure, without in turn causing even more problems for our foreign policy and national prestige. Stay tuned.

Resolution Introduced in House to Expel Nancy Pelosi

House Democrats may be trying to ram through impeachment in secret with an anonymous whistleblower.

But although Republicans are outnumbered in the House, they are fighting back.

First, they filed a resolution to censure Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). The resolution has 61 co-sponsors at last count, with prominent names including the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA).

Now, they’re also fighting back against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) who allowed this travesty to get so far.

Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA) has introduced a resolution to expel Pelosi from the House.

From Fox News:

“Nancy Pelosi’s vicious crusade against our lawfully-elected President is nothing more than a politically-motivated witch hunt and it must be stopped,” Abraham said in a statement. “She has disgraced the people’s House and weaponized the Speaker’s gavel for her party’s political gain.”

Abraham added: “House Democrats spent nearly three years obsessed with election meddling only to dwarf any such efforts with their own deceitful plan to nullify the 2016 election and prevent President Trump from winning in 2020. I have introduced a resolution calling for her to be expelled from the House and for the Speaker’s Office to be vacated.”

The White House is fighting back as well.

They refused to let the U.S. EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland testify before a House panel and they sent a stern letter back to the House, making it clear they regarded the inquiry as illegitimate and unconstitutional.

“I would love to send Ambassador Sondland, a really good man and great American, to testify, but unfortunately he would be testifying before a totally compromised kangaroo court, where Republican’s rights have been taken away, and true facts are not allowed out for the public to see,” Trump wrote on Twitter. ….

Adam Schiff of course immediately claimed the refusal constituted obstruction.

But Trump chastised Democrats calling what they were doing to the country “unthinkable.”

“It’s lucky that I’m the president,” he declared. “A lot of people said very few people could handle it. I sort of thrive on it,” Trump said Monday at the White House. “You can’t impeach a president for doing a great job. This is a scam.”

Mueller Was Pursuing FBI Director Job When He Met With Trump, Contrary to What He Testified to Congress, Admin Officials Say

This latest report could spell big trouble for former Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Fox is reporting that multiple administration officials are saying that when Mueller met with President Donald Trump in May 2017, he was in fact pursuing the job as FBI Director.

Problem with this?

Mueller denied this under oath when he testified before Congress this year about his investigation. When he testified on July 24, Mueller claimed he thought that he was just being asked by Trump about what was needed in a candidate for the job. “My understanding was I was not applying for the job,” Mueller testified on July 24. “I was asked to give my input on what it would take to do the job.” Mueller had served as FBI Director under Barack Obama and under George W. Bush.

According to the officials talking to Fox, there are government documents, however, showing he was seeking the job.

There’s more.

According to emails obtained by Judicial Watch, it appears that he may have known he was also being considered for the Special Counsel position if he didn’t get the job as the FBI Director.

“The boss and his staff do not know about our discussions,” then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in an email to Mueller on May 12, 2017. Rosenstein’s boss was then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had recused himself from the Russia probe, meaning the president would not have known either.

A source close to Rosenstein confirmed to Fox News that he had confidential conversations with Mueller about whether he would be willing to serve in the event he needed to appoint a special counsel. These conversations began on May 12, 2017, prior to Mueller’s meeting with the president on May 16, 2017, the source acknowledged.

Trump has said repeatedly that Mueller interviewed for the job, didn’t get it and therefore it was a conflict for him to be Special Counsel.

According to Fox, Trump has also indicated that there were other witnesses to the meeting including the Vice President, Mike Pence.

“It has been reported that Robert Mueller is saying that he did not apply and interview for the job of FBI Director (and get turned down) the day before he was wrongfully appointed Special Counsel” Trump tweeted the day of Mueller’s Capitol Hill testimony. “Hope he doesn’t say that under oath in that we have numerous witnesses to the interview, including the Vice President of the United States!”

According to Fox, John Dowd, the president’s attorney, blasted Mueller, calling his conduct “most dishonorable” he had “ever witnessed” because he knew as he was being interviewed that if he didn’t get the job he was going to investigate Trump.

Mueller has gone back into private practice, rejoining his old firm, WilmerHale.

But it will be interesting to see what if anything Congress does in response to this report.
