Award-winning Chevrolet Sonic discontinued due to small car sales slump

U.S. production and sales of the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic are being discontinued this year due to declining sales of the subcompact model.

Chevy will continue to build the hatchback and sedan at its Orion Assembly plant in Michigan alongside the Bolt EV until October, before it is retooled to add production of a new Bolt-based small electric utility vehicle.

The Sonic was introduced in 2011 as part of GM’s post-bailout commitment to build small, fuel-efficient models in the U.S., but sales peaked at just under 94,000 in 2014 and were less than 14,000 last year. It recently achieved the highest score of any vehicle on the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

Chevrolet also ended production of the Ohio-built compact Cruze last year, as the market shifts toward utility vehicles, but it continues to sell the South Korea-made Spark, which is smaller than the Sonic and GM’s cheapest model at $14,395.

NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson cleared to race after 2 negative COVID-19 tests

Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson has twice tested negative for the coronavirus and will race Sunday at Kentucky Speedway.

Westlake Legal Group AP20185583803631 NASCAR's Jimmie Johnson cleared to race after 2 negative COVID-19 tests Jenn fox-news/health/infectious-disease/coronavirus fox-news/auto/nascar fox-news/auto/attributes/racing fnc/auto fnc Associated Press article 0418d4db-88d3-55eb-8b17-1a45e1c487b3

Johnson missed the first race of his Cup career when he tested positive last Friday. He was tested after his wife received a positive result.

Hendrick Motorsports said Johnson tested negative on Monday and Tuesday and will return to the No. 48 Chevrolet at Kentucky. NASCAR confirmed Wednesday that Johnson has been cleared to return.

“It’s been an emotional journey and I’m so happy to be back,” he tweeted.

Johnson’s streak of 663 consecutive starts — most among active drivers — was snapped when he didn’t race Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Justin Allgaier replaced him at the Brickyard 400 and finished 37th after an early multi-car crash on pit road.

Johnson is the only NASCAR driver to test positive for the coronavirus since the series resumed racing on May 17. He is scheduled to retire from full-time NASCAR competition at the end of this season.

“My family is so grateful for the incredible love and support we’ve received over the last several days,” he said. “I especially want to thank Justin Allgaier for stepping in for me at Indy and being a true pro. I’m excited about getting back to business with my team this weekend.”

Johnson never experienced any symptoms; his wife, Chani, was tested after suffering from what she thought was routine seasonal allergies. When she received her positive result, Johnson and their two young daughters were tested. Their daughters were negative.

Hendrick Motorsports had four crew members tested for COVID-19 after Johnson’s diagnosis and all four received negative results. The No. 48 team will have its regular personnel roster for Sunday’s race.

Missing the Brickyard 400 dropped Johnson to 15th in the driver standings, 46 points above the cutoff for playoffs.

Even before Johnson’s diagnosis, Hendrick Motorsports had implemented strict protocols that include daily health screenings for employees working at team facilities. The organization works in split work schedules with stringent face covering and social distancing requirements. Hendrick has also increased its level of disinfecting and sanitizing all work areas.

Bubba Wallace signs endorsement pact with Beats by Dre: report

Beats by Dre announced Monday that NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace signed an endorsement deal with the company.

“We weren’t going to announce this until later this week, but hate cannot win the day,” Beats by Dre, which was acquired by Apple in 2014, wrote on Twitter.

The announcement came after President Trump earlier Monday suggested Wallace, NASCAR’s only black driver, apologize for saying he was the victim of a hate crime.

Last month, one of Wallace’s crew members found an apparent noose in his garage stall at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway.

The finding prompted an investigation by the FBI, which determined Wallace was not the victim of a hate crime and that the rope, fashioned like a noose, had been in the stall since at least October 2019.

In a MCLonday morning tweet, Trump wrote: “Has @BubbaWallace apologized to all of those great NASCAR drivers & officials who came to his aid, stood by his side, & were willing to sacrifice everything for him, only to find out that the whole thing was just another HOAX? That & Flag decision has caused lowest ratings EVER!”

Wallace later responded to the president’s remarks by tweeting out a statement of his own, denouncing “HATE from the POTUS.”

Addressing his younger generation of followers, Wallace wrote, “All the haters are doing is elevating your voice and platform to much greater heights.”

He called for people to “always deal with the hate being thrown at you with LOVE!”

“Even when it’s HATE from the POTUS.. Love wins,” Wallace wrote.

Harvick wins NASCAR Brickyard 400 after Hamlin crashes out of lead with 7 laps to go

Kevin Harvick turned up the pressure on Denny Hamlin late in the Brickyard 400.

Westlake Legal Group AP20188035031537 Harvick wins NASCAR Brickyard 400 after Hamlin crashes out of lead with 7 laps to go Michael Marot fox-news/auto/nascar fox-news/auto/attributes/racing fnc/auto fnc Associated Press article 6e9f2e73-864f-5d56-b97b-b8e5510d4da8

And on a cooling track, Hamlin’s worn tires simply gave out.

As the sun set Sunday over Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hamlin was seven laps from one of the few victories that has eluded him, he went careening into the first turn wall with a flat right front-side tire, and Harvick beat Matt Kenseth off the final restart to win his second straight Brickyard.

“We had great tire wear today, so I was able to really push my car as hard as I could,” Harvick said after his third 400 title. “I was able to push him a little harder that last run than earlier in the race and when the sun went down the track was cooling and speeds were going up in the turns.”

The strategy worked out perfectly — just like Stewart-Haas Racing’s holiday weekend.

Not only did Harvick race to his 53rd victory to move within one of tying Lee Petty for 11th on NASCAR’s career list — teammates Aric Almirola and Cole Custer, a rookie, finished third and fifth Sunday. Fellow Stewart-Haas driver Chase Briscoe won the Xfinity Series race Saturday or the road course.

Harvick tied Hamlin with a season-high fourth victoy and lead in the points. The California driver has four straight top-10 finishes.

And for the third straight race, it looked as if it would be another one-two finish for Harvick and Hamlin.

But until the late, stunning twist, Hamlin looked as though he would take his first Brickyard.

“It’s just, it’s tough. I hate it for the FedEx team,” the frustrated Hamlin said. “It was just kind of roulette if it (the tire) stays together or not and mine didn’t.”

How dominant have Harrvick and Hamlin been recently?

After trading victories and runner-up finishes at Pocono last week and Sunday’s result, they’ve combined for seven of 12 victories since the season restarted at Darlington in mid-May and it’s only the second time in seven races Hamlin and his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing entry hasn’t finished in the top seven.

But as Childers plotted strategy and monitored tire wear, he sensed Hamlin was on borrowed time.

“We tried to play it a little safe and we had backed down ours down a little bit to save our tires,” he said. “It just depends on how that situation plays out at the race and it just so happened we were out there a long time on tires so backing down was the way to go.”

Kenseth couldn’t catch him.

“We were really fast,” the Chip Ganassi Racing driver said. “I think if we were in front, would have been tough to beat.

One person was noticeably absent: Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson in No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports car. Johnson watched the race from his Colorado home as the series’ longest active streak of consecutive and fifth-longest in series history ended at 663. Johnson was hoping to become the third driver to win five races on the 2.5-mile oval.

Instead, Justin Allgaier replaced him in the car and he didn’t stick around long.

Allgaier was involved in a six-car pileup near the entrance to pit road that brought out a red flag on Lap 16 when one of Ryan Blaney’s crew members was pinned between two cars. Track workers put Zachary Price on a stretcher. He was eventually transported to a nearby hospital but there was no immediate post-race update.

Two laps later, Allgaier’s day was over.

“I didn’t know if I got the gentleman on the No. 12 or not,” Allgaier said. “Once the wreck started happening in front of us and we all got bottled up there, one car after another was getting run into. It’s just a shame. I hate it for these guys.”

Kurt Busch also had a rough day after making his 700th career start. After starting second, his hopes for winning one of the Cup’s crown jewels faded with an early pit stop mistake. A plane flew over the track during pre-race activities to celebrate the milestone, which broke a tie with Hall of Famer Buddy Baker for No. 16 on the series career list.

NASCAR’s weather problems also continued, this time with the start delayed 55 minutes for lightning.

But once the race started, it was clean sailing for Harvick. He led for most of the first stage before giving way to William Byron, who chose not to pit with nine laps to go, and then won the second stage before earning the big prize.

“We weren’t going to get by him (Hamlin) unless he made a huge mistake and obviously his tire was wearing out,” Harvick said. “His car was a little better than me on the long run. We were better on the restarts so we would have needed a caution we couldn’t have beaten him on a green.”

Jimmie Johnson 1st NASCAR driver to test positive for virus

INDIANAPOLIS — Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson has tested positive for the coronavirus and will miss this weekend’s race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 44-year-old Johnson is the first driver in any NASCAR series to test positive, and the news Friday evening cast a shadow over the historic NASCAR-IndyCar doubleheader races coming up Saturday and Sunday. There was no indication any races would be affected.

Hendrick Motorsports said Johnson will not return until he is cleared by a physician. He was tested earlier Friday after his wife, Chani, tested positive after experiencing allergy-like symptoms.

Johnson is asymptomatic.

“My first priority is the health and safety of my loved ones and my teammates,” Johnson said. “I’ve never missed a race in my Cup career, but I know it’s going to be very hard to watch from the sidelines when I’m supposed to be out there competing. Although this situation is extremely disappointing, I’m going to come back ready to win races and put ourselves in playoff contention.”

NEARLY 100,000 HAVE BEEN KILLED IN ONGOING YEMEN WAR, REPORT FINDS

Johnson earlier Friday held a Zoom session with reporters to discuss Sunday’s race and an upcoming test of an Indy car on the road course at the fabled venue. He will now miss that test, as well as what was supposed to be his final Brickyard 400. Justin Allgaier will replace him in the No. 48 Chevrolet.

“Jimmie has handled this situation like the champion he is,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports. “We’re relieved he isn’t showing symptoms and that Chani is doing great, and we know he’ll be back and ready to go very soon. It’s going to be difficult for him to be out of the car and away from his team, but it’s the right thing to do for Jimmie and everyone involved.”

Hendrick Motorsports said it has implemented detailed procedures to protect the health of its team members. They include daily COVID-19 screenings at the team facilities; the separation of facility operations and traveling personnel; split work schedules; stringent face covering and social distancing requirements; and an increased level of disinfecting and sanitization of all work areas.

Johnson is scheduled to retire from full-time NASCAR competition at the end of the season and was trying to tie Jeff Gordon and Michael Schumacher as the only five-time winners at Indianapolis.

Johnson has made 663 conscutive Cup Series starts — the longest streak among active drivers — and is currently 12th in the standings, 63 points inside the playoff picture. NASCAR’s rules state a driver must be symptom free and have two negative coronavirus tests in a 24-hour span to return.

NASCAR said it has granted Johnson a playoff waiver.

“Jimmie is a true battle-tested champion, and we wish him well in his recovery,” the series said.

Johnson could potentially also miss the Cup race at Kentucky and the All-Star race at Bristol. Next week’s test of the road course at Indy in Scott Dixon’s car has also been scrapped.

NASCAR was one of the first sports to resume competition from the pandemic shutdown and has completed 11 Cup races since its May 17 return. The sanctioning body does not test for coronavirus but participants are required to do a temperature check as they enter the facility.

Drivers have been told to isolate at the track and there is very little interaction beyond radio conversation between the competitor and his crew.

Although Stewart-Haas Racing and Team Penske both said they’ve had positive tests from shop-based team members, Johnson is the first driver. Earlier Friday, Brazilian sports car driver Felipe Nasr said he had tested positive and will miss Saturday’s IMSA event at Daytona International Speedway.

Johnson earlier Friday discussed the Indy car test scheduled with Chip Ganassi Racing, which he said was the first step in determine if actual races are in his future. If he’s any good, he said, he would be open to racing all 12 street and road course events on the IndyCar schedule.

Johnson has long said safety concerns would keep him from racing on IndyCar oval tracks, but Friday he offered a surprisingly softer stance about the Indy 500. IndyCar this year unveiled its aeroscreen windshield designed to protect the drivers from debris as they sit in the open-air cockpits. Saturday will mark just the second race with the device, but it appeared problem-free last month on the oval at high-speed Texas Motor Speedway.

“Their safety on ovals has dramatically increased this year with the windscreen. So, I’ll keep a close eye on things there and see how the safety level looks,” Johnson said. “I’ve always wanted to race the Indy 500. I’d have to do a lot of selling to my wife to get that pass, but my true desire right now is to just run the road courses.”

Johnson has his eye on the street course race in Long Beach, Calif., a race that was canceled this year because of the coronavirus pandemic but is one of the most storied events on the IndyCar calendar at a track just a couple hours from his native El Cajon.

“When I was a kid growing up, the closest IndyCar racing for me was at Long Beach so one of my hopes is that I am able to race at Long Beach,” Johnson said. “I hung on the fence a lot as a kid watching and dreaming. … There’s a lot of sentimental value with that race and I hope to race there.”

He is stuck in a three-year losing streak but Hendrick Motorsports has been dramatically improved this season and Johnson has been competitive. He has also been actively prepping for a whirl in an Indy car and had been scheduled to test with the McLaren team before the pandemic.

“It’s a test, it’s a tryout and it’s a two-way street. Two-way tryout for the team to look at me and for myself to look at a team,” he said. “If I’m about four seconds off the pace, then that’s probably a quick sign that I don’t need to be in one of these cars. If I’m within a certain amount of time and I have a good feel of the car, then for me, I feel like that’s an important first step that I need to know that I can be competitive.

“I do not want to go race in any series and not be competitive,” he said.

The Super Stock borrows some of its tricks from the limited edition 2018 Challenger SRT Demon, which was rated at 808 hp on pump gas. Dodge built just 3,300 of them and brand boss Tim Kuniskis promised buyers he’d never build something quite like it again. He’s a man of his word, if only just.

The Super Stock also does without the Demon’s unique transmission brake that delivers the most ferocious launches down the drag strip, but does get the Demon’s computer-controlled suspension with a Drag Mode that’s programmed to transfer weight to the rear tires when using launch control.

Those tires are Nitto drag radials mounted to 18-inch wheels and are good for a quarter-mile time of 10.5 seconds at 131 mph. There’s also a line-lock feature that holds just the front brakes to make it easier to turn those tires into smoke.

Dodge//SRT Performance Lineup: 2020 Challenger SRT Super Stock, 2021 Durango SRT Hellcat, 2021 Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye

Dodge is also adding a Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye sedan to the lineup for 2021 that uses a 797 hp version of the Hellcat engine along with the 710 hp Durango SRT Hellcat SUV. Prices haven’t been announced, but Kuniskis says that, unlike the Demon, he’ll build as many as the market wants.

NASCAR‘s Go Fas Racing will be running a Trump 2020-sponsored car for several upcoming Cup Series races, starting with the Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 5.

The independent, single-car team added a small Trump 2020 sticker to its Ford Mustang at last weekend’s Pocono Speedway event, but has inked a deal with the Patriots of America PAC for it to be the primary sponsor in nine races.

According to Yahoo Sports, the PAC recently paid $350,000 to the team, but it is not clear exactly how much of the sponsorship that amount covers.

“I am honored to be part of the President’s re-election campaign through the Patriots of America PAC. As a Trump 2020 supporter, this team will do everything possible to secure victory on and off the track electing President Donald Trump to a second term. Let us bring this country back and Keep America Great!” said Go Fas Racing team owner Archie St. Hilaire in a press release announcing the partnership.

LaJoie is also quoted in the release saying he will give his “best effort to get NASCAR fans registered to vote,” but did not declare his support for Trump. After the Pocono car was revealed he noted in his Twitter bio that he is not involved in picking the sponsorship for his car, but has since set his account to private.

LaJoie finished in a season-high eighth place at the Daytona 500, but is currently 27th in the points standings.
