Awful-smelling plant along this US roadway has one saving grace — it melts snow

Mild winter temperatures along a stretch of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Parkway in Watauga County have resulted in the growth of a fetid-smelling pod that, despite its odor, has the uncanny ability to create enough heat to melt snow around it, a published report said.

NC DAD ‘TACKLED’ SUSPECTED HOME INTRUDER AFTER DAUGHTER SCREAMED, INVESTIGATORS SAY

While experts say the plant – known as skunk cabbage – is fatal if eaten, in a Facebook post Saturday, National Park Service officials say the prodigious bloom has “a face only a mother could love,” the Charlotte Observer reported.

“Equipped with a chemical process that heats this early bloomer up to over 55 degrees Fahrenheit, these stinky members of the Arum Family can even melt snow in order to bloom. Talk about determination!”

— National Park Service Facebook post

Skunk cabbage is “a warm-blooded plant” that can raise the surrounding temperatures by as much as 20 degrees, according to a Pennsylvania State University report. By doing this, it “will use as much oxygen as a comparably sized mammal,” the report says.

Descriptions of the plant say it “looks like something out of a science-fiction movie,” with a fierce defense mechanism, according to Gardening Know How.

“Skunk cabbage gets its name from the fact that, when the leaves are crushed or bruised, it gives off a smell of skunk or rotting meat,” Gardeningknowhow.com says.

“In small doses, or two small bites, the skunk cabbage plant can cause burning and swelling of the mouth and a choking sensation. Eating larger portions of these leaves can, in extreme cases, be fatal,” the gardening site says.

Bride-to-be puts stranger’s email address on invitations, demands to be given account

Brides can make a lot of demands when it comes to their wedding day, but this might be taking things a little too far.

When a woman started getting wedding RSVPs to someone else’s wedding in her email’s inbox, she was initially confused. Things got complicated, however, when the bride-to-be messaged her with a strange request.

Reddit user ClockworkMoose shared their story to the site’s forums. She explained that after getting several RSVPs to a stranger’s wedding, she received an email from the bride-to-be, who shared the same first name as her. The bride-to-be said ClockworkMoose would have to give up her email account.

The story continues, “I reply to that, no, and also, why? I get an email back in about 10 minutes. She says that she’s got the same first name as me, and is getting married to a guy (with the same last name as ClockworkMoose). They’ve picked (ClockworkMoose’s real name) as their email account for RSVPs. She didn’t realize I made the account, so I can either give my password to her or I can reset it and she can create a new one, whichever works for me!”

BRIDE, GROOM EXPECT GUESTS TO SIT THROUGH TIMESHARE PRESENTATION AS PART OF DESTINATION WEDDING

When the post’s author says she declined to give up her email account, the bride-to-be responded angrily and claimed that ClockworkMoose was ruining her life and wedding.

ClockworkMoose says she eventually figured out that the bride-to-be sent out her wedding invitations with the email address on them, unaware it was already taken. Unable to recall all of the invitations, the bride-to-be seemed determined to take over the email account.

After several angry emails, ClockworkMoose says she responded and offered to forward the RSVPs to the bride’s actual email address. “She sends back a nasty email full of expletives and name-calling again demanding my password or nothing,” she wrote.

Since then, a seemingly fed up ClockworkMoose says she’s been responding to RSVPs by telling people they’re not invited to her wedding. “This has the benefit of being 100 percent true, albeit deceptive,” she wrote.

Surprisingly, this doesn’t seem to be an isolated incident. Several commenters responded by sharing similar stories that they had to deal with.

“I had a similar encounter with an Instagram account,” replied another user. “’FirstnameMiddlename’ and some idiot had the nerve to DM me and ask me to change mine so she could have it. At least this one was a kid/teen so I brushed her off but it baffles me when grown adults do this.”

Another user chimed in, “I got it on Twitter once. It was some person that basically said I stole their identity by having the handle I had, and I had to give it to them. I pointed out I had been on Twitter a lot longer than them, and I wasn’t changing. Has to be kids thinking they can just demand something they want.”

Face masks are must-have accessory of London fashion week amid coronavirus panic

Virus protection — but make it fashion.

The hottest accessory at London fashion week isn’t a Barbie-sized purse, but fashionable face masks amid widespread panic over coronavirus.

Though fabric face masks can’t exactly help prevent the spread of the virus, it hasn’t stopped stylish denizens from wearing them to shows anyway.

But these aren’t your ordinary face masks of the surgical hospital variety. The fashion flock is putting their own spin on the accessory with adornments to show off a bit of personality. One attendee outside the British Fashion Council (BFC) Show Space show wore one decorated with arrows, while a pair of women donned pastel-hued versions.

The BFC expects attendance at London fashion week to go down this year due to coronavirus, reports Reuters. Chinese designer Yuhan Wang opened LFW, but tells Reuters she had to cut down on looks because of delays caused by the virus. Six Chinese brands have canceled shows at Paris fashion week, Women’s Wear Daily reports, and upcoming fashion weeks in Beijing and Shanghai that were slated for March have been postponed.

London isn’t the first city where face masks have become the trending accessory. Several New York Fashion Week attendees covered their mouths last week, including stylist Marina Ingvarsson who wore a minimal black face mask outside the Michael Kors show. The trend was just as prevalent during NYFW in 2018 over flu concerns.

The streets aren’t the only place face masks have been popping up. Designers Phillipe and David Blond featured plenty of them during their Monday runway show for the Blonds, including bedazzled, bejeweled and feathered renditions. Blancore’s Yalan Li also included one made out of white mesh during her show.

In New York, face masks have become hard to come by, too. Most shops have reported selling out of plain surgical masks as of January following the rise of coronavirus cases stateside. Prices have also skyrocketed at online stores such as Amazon as shoppers even scoop up masks for their pets.

In China, where coronavirus originated, over 5,000 new cases were confirmed in a single day, according to officials. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the total cases of the deadly illness in the US is now at 15 as of Thursday.

Harriet Tubman Visa debit card draws backlash, bank responds

A OneUnited Bank limited edition Visa debit card depicting Harriet Tubman has come under fire online from critics who say the design is in poor taste.

The image in question depicts the revered abolitionist with a serious stare while wearing a red-and-white head wrap. At the center of the controversy are Tubman’s arms, which are crossed over her chest with her hands balled into fists.

The gesture, to some, resembled the popular salute from Marvel’s “Black Panther.”

JASON NICHOLS: HARRIET TUBMAN BELONGS ON $20 BILL — CONGRESS SHOULD MAKE TRUMP PUT HER THERE IN 2020

OneUnited, which calls itself the nation’s largest black-owned bank, was quickly accused of using the historical figure to pander to African-American customers, during Black History Month.

“Make it make sense, y’all,” tweeted writer and former ESPN host Jemele Hill.

“This just wasn’t a well thought out idea. Please take this down,” a Twitter user commented.

JACK BREWER: BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2020 — TRUMP’S POLICIES ARE BETTERING LIVES BLACK AMERICANS

Another person wrote, “Wakanda isn’t real and even if it was Harriet Tubman was an American and not from this imaginary African country.”

Despite the public backlash, the company responded on Twitter that the Tubman image was not a reference to “Black Panther” or its fictional country. She actually is using American Sign Language sign for “love.”

“She was about love,” Addonis Parker, the Miami artist behind the painting, told The Washington Post. “It took sacrifice and love for her to do everything she’s done.”

Parker worked with the financial institution previously, painting a mural outside its branch in Liberty City. Some of his artwork has been used on its credit cards.

Not coincidentally, “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler previously acknowledged that the Wakanda sign was inspired by the ASL sign for “love.”

After the Tubman debit card image went viral, OneUnited was quick to issue a statement.

“Harriet Tubman is the ultimate symbol of love – love that causes you to sacrifice everything, including your own life,” the bank tweeted. “The gesture is the sign language symbol for love. It’s so important that we love ourselves.”

RompHim menswear company goes out of business after going viral

It was fun while it lasted.

RompHim, the fashion company that went viral for its male-marketed one-piece garments, has announced that it has closed shop.

“The time has come to close the door on RompHim,” the company co-founders said in a statement.

RompHim made waves in 2017 when the then-Northwestern business students launched a Kickstarter for their colorful and creatively-printed male rompers. The crowdsourcing campaign raised $350,000 for the fashion line, which included RompSuits for cold weather.

On their Instagram Story, RompHim thanked their customers – which they called the “Romp Squad”— “for being an integral part of [the] journey to push fashion boundaries,” according to the New York Post.

While some critics mocked the unconventional style for being what they considered a less-than-manly fashion choice, it was a hit with many men including the Los Angeles Rams and the cast of Bravo’s “Summer House.”

PREGNANT MODEL QUIZZED ON HOW SHE USES BATHROOM IN SKINTIGHT BODYSUIT

RompHim’s popularity continued to grow thanks to its bro-like marketing ads like models rocking their rompers at baseball games, chugging beer and playing pool. The menswear line was also popular with the LGBTQ community.

But for diehard fans who can’t stand to see their favorite menswear line go, they can at least be comforted in knowing that male rompers are also available for sale by other fashion brands like ASOS and RomperJack.

Male one-piece garments are apparently on the rise, evidenced by adult male onesies that were being sold on the e-commerce site Wish.com.

The unique fashion item, traditionally worn by toddlers, was being sold last month by multiple vendors on the site, which features male models rocking crotch-hugging onesies.

One of the onesies sold by the seller BoutiqueMarket was described as a “Pressed Crotch Baseball Themed Bodysuit Romper Pajamas.”

The item even came with a five-star review. “Fits nicely, quality surpasses what I expected,” one happy buyer wrote in the product’s customer reviews section.

Banksy Valentine’s Day artwork found on England home

The ever-mysterious street artist Banksy is at it again.

A pop-up Valentine’s Day painting was found on the side of a home in Bristol, England, on Thursday, depicting a girl firing red flowers made with spray-painted ivy from a catapult.

The unexpected art piece quickly became an attraction, as many believed the work to be of Banksy, the anonymous artist known for his often political street art.

Banksy added to the speculation on Friday when he posted an image of the artwork to his Instagram page at midnight.

Now efforts are being made to protect the “special” work from upcoming Storm Dennis and potential vandalism, the BBC reported.

“There’s so many people coming and enjoying it, taking pictures, it’s fantastic,” said Kelly Woodruff, whose father owns the property.

“There’s been a lot of debate if it is a Banksy or not. Most people I’ve spoken to think it 100 percent is, and they’re naming it the Valentine’s Banksy,” she said. “It’s incredible and beautiful.”

Flowers placed on a road sign as part of the artwork had already been stolen, Woodruff said, and the protective plastic screen they placed over it on Thursday evening had been vandalized.

Woodruff has been advised by the Bristol City Council to get in touch with the International Fine Art Conservation Studios (IFACS) in Bristol for guidance.

Meanwhile, spectators can’t get enough of Banksy’s latest piece, which has garnered more than 1 million likes on Instagram.

“How has no one spotted a guy with a spray can and a set of ladder,” an Instagram user wrote, “what makes this guy great Is that he does it for art and not greed of money and fame.”

“Banksy is a living (still) underrated genius,” another fan gushed.

What made the artwork even more special was that it was discovered on Woodruff’s father’s birthday.

“Thank you for making my dad’s birthday one to remember,” she wrote on Instagram. “Words can’t describe how excited we are.”

Ivanka Trump debuts new hair color

Blondes have more fun!

White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump debuted a new look on Wednesday morning with chunky blonde highlights in her already golden hair.

The president’s oldest daughter unveiled the new ‘do at a State Department anniversary event in Washington, D.C. for the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity (W-GDP) Initiative she spearheaded last year.

Looking ahead, style blog Who What Wear predicts that chunky highlights popularized in the 90s will make a comeback in 2020. Unlike the dramatic, high-contrast highlights of days past, however, the new take on the trend will reportedly incorporate balayage and face-framing coloring techniques.

This isn’t the first time in recent months that Trump switched up her look. In September 2019, the White House senior adviser made headlines when she lobbed off her long locks into a trendy bob, debuting the new hairstyle while visiting Colombia to advocate for female entrepreneurs.

At the Wednesday W-GDP event, Trump revealed that a bipartisan pair of senators are working for the global women’s initiative to be written into law. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., will take on the effort.

California veteran, 104, gets 200,000 Valentine’s Day cards

Happy Valentine’s Day, Major White.

A 104-year-old Marine Corps veteran who served in World War II said he’s “floored” to have received over 200,000 Valentine’s cards from all over the world for his growing collection of keepsakes.

Last month, a friend of Maj. Bill White launched a social media campaign dubbed “Operation Valentine” to collect Valentine’s Day cards for the centenarian veteran.

VALENTINE’S DAY: DO YOU KNOW THE ORIGINS OF THE HOLIDAY?

White resides at an assisted living facility in Stockton, Calif. and cites scrapbooking as a favorite hobby. Along with his many military medals – including a Purple Heart awarded for surviving the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945 – White enjoys keeping his scrapbooks and mementos organized, Fox 40 reports.

This year, the spirited vet hoped to grow his collection of keepsakes with 100 Valentine’s Day cards in honor of his 100 years, and was astonished to receive hundreds of thousands of love letters, Reuters reports.

On Wednesday night, White told host Martha MacCallum on “The Story” that well-wishers sent over 200,000 cards ahead of Feb. 14.

White reportedly has received so much mail that his family has had recruited volunteers to help open the letters and read them, per Reuters.

Though Cupid’s bow certainly struck the veteran with the holiday spirit this year, White revealed he’s never celebrated Valentine’s Day in such a big way before, even when his wife of 42 years was still alive.

“It’s something I’ve never heard of or seen. All of a sudden here, like a ton of bricks. I’m sort of speechless,” he said of the outpour of love.

Fashion Week events in China postponed amid coronavirus fears

These fashion weeks have become fashion victims.

Two major fashion industry events in China have been postponed as a precaution amid fears surrounding the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, previously referred to as the novel coronavirus.

MEN APPEAR TO BE MORE VULNERABLE TO THE CORONAVIRUS: REPORT

Productions for Shanghai Fashion Week and China Fashion Week in Beijing have been temporarily halted as the number of coronavirus cases in China continues to rise. As of Thursday, over 50,000 people in the country had been reportedly infected with the virus, while the death toll had reached 1,300 worldwide.

Both Fashion Weeks were slated to begin on March 26, and have been deferred for the foreseeable future, the South China Morning Post reports. No information has yet been released regarding when events might be rescheduled, as “designers, trade show owners, fashion week committees and the local governments have not yet been able to agree on a time slot” that is both viable for brands and be deemed “safe” by the government, reports Women’s Wear Daily.

In partnership with Beijing’s Central Committee, State Council and Shanghai’s local government, Shanghai Fashion Week officials announced the news on Monday, postponing what the Business of Fashion calls “the country’s most important fashion moment of the year.” The event has been called off for now as a “precautionary measure” against the COVID-19 virus.

“We hope that everyone will stay vigilant and pay attention to the government’s advice,” said Shanghai Fashion Week executive Lv Xiaolei. “The organization will focus on keeping up trade, communicating with all parties and find a solution to the situation.”

Chinese consumers fuel the world’s largest luxury market, spending over $100 billion annually both at home and abroad, CBS reports.  As brands like Balenciaga, Burberry and Gucci limit their store hours of operation or even shutter their doors altogether in mainland China, it remains to be determined how the ongoing COVD-19 outbreak will ultimately affect luxury brands’ bottom lines.

China has locked down an unprecedented 60 million people in an effort to curb the spread of the virus, which has hit hardest in the city of Wuhan and surrounding towns in the Hubei province.
