Todd Starnes: A kid who stole old glory gets a second chance

Every now and then you come across someone in life who needs a second chance and that brings me to a story I shared with my radio audience the other day.

On July 25 a 19-year-old boy stole an American flag that was posted outside the Beacon Car & Pet Wash in Pacific, Missouri.

Click here to pre-order Todd’s explosive new book, “Culture Jihad: How to Stop the Left From Killing a Nation.”

Fortunately, Bill Hoaglin, the owner of the business, had installed surveillance cameras around the property. And sure enough, he managed to capture the crime in progress.

He posted screenshots of the suspect on Facebook and about 45 minutes later he began receiving messages from people who identified the culprit.

The police reviewed the footage and stopped by the suspect’s house, but the young man was not home. About 15 minutes later, the phone rang at the car wash. It was the suspect.

MORE FROM OPINION

“He wanted to make it right,” Mr. Hoaglin told me during an interview on my nationally-syndicated radio show. “So, I told him to bring the flag back.”

Instead of tossing the kid in jail, the business owner and the police officer decided to teach the young thief a life lesson.

Mr. Hoaglin dispatched his daughter to a nearby store to purchase every small American flag she could find. In the meantime, the young man turned up at the car wash where he was given a choice: accept a learning experience or go to jail.

The kid chose wisely.

So, for more than five hours he handed out small American flags to every customer who dropped by the car wash.

“The middle flag, I stole it,” the young man told Fox 2 Now. “I made a mistake. Don’t steal flags, kids.”

There was no doubt the kid ate a little bit of humble pie.

“He was very courteous. He didn’t get snarky, wasn’t smart-alecky with us at all,” Mr. Hoaglin said.

The point was not to embarrass or belittle the young man but to get him back on the straight and narrow. It’s the sort of community policing that Mr. Hoaglin endorsed during his 18-year career as a police officer.

“I’m a very strong believer in that,” he said. “So, I thought let’s give this a try. And I think it made a good impression on him.”

And it also made a good impression on the rest of the community.

Mr. Hoaglin said some local residents heard about the flag giveaway on Facebook and brought their kids down to the car wash to show them what happens when a person gets caught stealing.

It’s nice to know there are places in America where neighbors still know each other and if a youngster gets in trouble with the law – it doesn’t mean an automatic trip to the jail.

“Community policing used to work a lot back when I was a kid,” he said. “If you were out being a knucklehead, they wouldn’t haul you off to jail, they would call your mom or dad and sometimes that was the worst punishment than getting a ticket.”

That’s the truth – especially if your mother owned a cast-iron skillet.

I do not believe there are random encounters in life. There was a reason why Mr. Hoaglin and that wayward soul crossed paths the other day.

Providence has a way of using those chance encounters to make an everlasting change in our life.

Todd Starnes: San Francisco votes to whitewash George Washington (literally!)

Westlake Legal Group wrwqwrerw3454354 Todd Starnes: San Francisco votes to whitewash George Washington (literally!) Todd Starnes fox-news/opinion fox-news/columns/todds-american-dispatch fox news fnc/opinion fnc db72b4ad-a74c-5d6d-8fff-4cafb88139fb article

The San Francisco School Board voted Tuesday to destroy a historic fresco of George Washington that includes images of slaves and a dead Native American.

School leaders said the 1,600-square-foot mural must be removed from George Washington High School to make reparations for historic wrongs, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

“It might be art and it can also be racist; it can be both,” board member Allison Collins told the newspaper. “It’s not just about removing them from public view, it’s also about righting a wrong.”

TODD STARNES: NATIONAL GUARD HAS A COME TO JESUS MOMENT OVER CHRISTIAN SCOUTING GROUP — THANK HEAVENS!

The mural, titled, “Life of Washington,” was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration and created by Russian-born artist Victor Arnautoff.

The two most controversial panels show Washington among his slaves at Mount Vernon and another in which he directs white men with guns westward over the body of a dead Native American, as described by KQED.

“This is reparations,” board member Mark Sanchez told the radio station.

Their plan is to literally paint over and whitewash American history.

The Chronicle reports critics want the mural to be pained over with “white paint” – arguing students should not be subjected to the offensive images.

“This mural is not teaching students about the history of slavery and indigenous genocide under George Washington or other white settlers,” graduate Nancy Truong told the newspaper. “Instead it is teaching students to normalize violence and death of our black and indigenous community.”

A number of historians and art critics urged the district to reconsider the destruction of the fresco.

“While I respect the concerns of the protestors and understand the problematic issues at play, I do not believe that San Francisco will be well-served by the destruction of the mural series,” Thomas Campbell, the director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, told the Chronicle.

Gordon Knox, the president of the San Francisco Art Institute, also opposed the destruction of the fresco.

“The destruction of art never advances dialogue and should never be misconstrued as a method of revoking facts of human history,” he said.

But the voices of Knox and Campbell were drowned out by a politically correct mob of culture jihadists.

On March 20, 1939 the Nazis set fire to thousands of paintings and sculptures in Berlin. Countless prints and watercolors and drawings deemed to be “degenerate were destroyed in the courtyard of the city’s fire department.

The heinous atrocities committed against artists on that day have been lost in the mists of time, overshadowed by the unspeakable book burnings of May 10, 1933.

I suspect the culture jihad that the Nazis waged on European history is not part of the curriculum being taught in American world history classrooms. It’s been all but erased from memory.

And that’s a shame because history is repeating itself – not in Germany, but in the United States. And I document this in my upcoming book, “Culture Jihad: How to Stop the Left From Killing a Nation.”

The evidence, as I lay out in “Culture Jihad” is clear. A new generation of fascists has been birthed in public school classrooms and they are slowly turning our culture into a heaping pile of rubble.

First, they came for the Confederate statues and monuments. Then, they set about banning books like “Huckleberry Finn” and “Little House on the Prairie” and “To Kill A Mockingbird.” And now they are coming after historic paintings.

As the statesman and philosopher Edmund Burke once said, “the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

It’s time for the good men and women of America to do something.

Rep. Mark Meadows: ‘Senate Republicans need to get a backbone’ on immigration

Senate Republicans must take action on immigration reform instead of allowing Democrats to prevent President Trump from securing the border, according to Mark Meadows.

On the House side, Republicans will continue to follow Trump’s lead on the issue, Rep. Meadows, R-N.C. said Wednesday on “The Todd Starnes Show.”

“If the president works, we’re going to stand with the president and we’re going to secure our border,” the House Freedom Caucus chairman said.

TRUMP: MEXICO TARIFFS ‘WILL TAKE EFFECT,’ ‘FOOLISH’ FOR GOP TO BLOCK

He criticized some Republican senators for taking issue with Trump’s decision to use tariffs against Mexico to get their assistance on the illegal immigration front.

“They passed a disaster relief [bill] out of the Senate, which we all know that many of our states needed that disaster relief,” Meadows said.

“But they also passed it without giving the president any money for border security measures. Now they want to blame the president for actually taking a tool that he has in his toolbox to make sure we secure the border.”

JONAH GOLDBERG: TRUMP MEXICO TARIFF THREAT COULD ‘SCUTTLE’ PLANNED REPLACEMENT OF NAFTA

“Shame on them, and I’m saying it being a part of the same party,” the western North Carolina lawmaker said.

Meadows added, “There’s nothing being done other than a whole lot of politicians talking about doing something.”

“Whether you applaud the tactics or not, [Trump is] serious about getting something done.”

In the past week, Sens. Pat Toomey, R-Pa. and Charles Grassley R-Iowa, released statements opposing the use of tariffs.

Toomey said tariffs are a “dangerous and risky economic tool.”

“They raise the cost of products for American families, reduce market share abroad for U.S. exporters and make our economy less competitive globally. History has shown us time and again that nobody wins a trade war,” the Pennsylvania lawmaker added.

“Trade policy and border security are separate issues,” Grassley said last week.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, R-Texas, were also critical of tariffs.

There is chilling video of Muslim children in Philadelphia singing songs and reading poetry about killing people in the name of Allah.

The Muslim American Society Islamic Center, the group responsible, is not in the Middle East but right here in the United States.

They posted a video of the performance on their Facebook page to celebrate. The kids lip-synching:

TODD STARNES: PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE FLAP LATEST EXAMPLE OF LEFT’S PLAN TO ERADICATE AMERICAN VALUES, TRADITIONS

“We will defend the land of divine guidance with our bodies, and we will sacrifice our souls without hesitation.”

“We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque. We will lead the army of Allah fulfilling His promise, and we will subject them to eternal torture.”

“The blood of the martyrs is calling us. Paradise, men desire it. Revolutionaries, Revolutionaries … Sword and Text, oh free men.”

You should be very afraid right now, folks. Very afraid.

The Middle East Media Research Institute – a watchdog group – first published the videos.

They said what we are watching in Philadelphia is happening in major Muslim centers around the country.

“The Muslim American Society has a history of being founded by the Muslim Brotherhood in 1993. That’s confirmed in FBI investigations,” Muslim scholar Dr. Qanta Ahmed told “Fox & Friends First” Monday morning. “The Muslim Brotherhood is the mothership of Islamist terrorism and central to that is a cosmic enmity with Judaism, so they have major problems furthermore there’s been investigations by the Middle East Forum that American taxpayer finances go to groups like this to the tune of $310,000 since 2007, going to groups like the Muslim American Society, though over $47 million goes to groups.”

The Muslim American Society’s Philadelphia chapter released a statement expressing their remorse and calling the jihad songs an “unintended mistake.”

They said not all the songs were properly vetted and promised an investigation.

Well, I’d like to know why the FBI is not investigating. Why hasn’t the Joint Terrorism Task Force been sent to Philadelphia?

Why hasn’t the Muslim American Society chapter been shut down?

Because that video illustrates a clear and present danger to the nation.

Rep. Lee Zeldin, who was a guest on “Fox & Friends,” said this, “They had children talking about chopping off of heads, liberating Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said. “The message isn’t one that you play and have these kids talk about unintended. That’s unacceptable and obviously unbelievable.”

Quite frankly, it sounds like the kind of propaganda material used to recruit jihadists. And I don’t know about you – but I’m curious to learn what else The Muslim American Society has been teaching those boys and girls.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is facing outrage from Americans after she described the Muslim terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 as “some people did something.”

Omar delivered the callous remarks at a Council on American-Islamic Relations calling upon other Muslim Americans to “make people uncomfortable” with their activism and presence in the society and criticized the Jewish state, Fox News reported.

Conservatives were quick to denounce the congresswoman’s whitewashing of that terrible day.

“Ilhan Omar isn’t just anti-Semitic – she’s anti-American,” GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel wrote on Twitter. “Nearly 3,000 Americans lost their lives to Islamic terrorists on 9/11, yet Omar diminishes it as: ‘Some people did something.’ Democrat leaders need to condemn her brazen display of disrespect.”

“First Member of Congress to ever describe terrorists who killed thousands of Americans on 9/11 as ‘some people who did something,’” Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, wrote in a tweet. “Unbelievable.”

Since Omar seems unclear on what really happened on September 11, 2001, let me see if I can be of some help.

That was the day when a group of Muslim extremists waged jihad on American soil in the name of Allah. They flew jetliners into the twin towers in the name of Allah. They flew a jetliner into the Pentagon in the name of Allah. They slaughtered American citizens in the name of Allah.

But it was also the day America fought back — when passengers aboard Flight 93 sacrificed their own lives in a Pennsylvania field to save their fellow countrymen. Not in the name of Allah, but in the name of freedom and liberty.

Omar has an ugly history of making hateful remarks about conservatives and Jews. Her hateful rhetoric has been well documented and I do not wish to publish her anti-Semitic tropes in this column.

Most recently, she smeared White House aide Stephen Miller as a white nationalist. Mr. Miller is Jewish.

Those remarks brought condemnation from President Trump – who has already called on her to resign. Republicans and a handful of Democrats have also rebuked the congresswoman.

However, I haven’t seen any massive protests from Omar’s congressional district. And that is indeed puzzling – and disturbing.
