Chicago has most violent weekend this year: 52 shot, 10 dead

Days after officials touted a slight decrease in crime, Chicago saw its most violent weekend of the year, with 52 people reportedly shot — including 10 fatally.

The violent spree occurred just days after authorities highlighted a nine percent drop in crime compared to the first five months of 2018.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Monday that Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson ordered targeted patrols in certain areas in response to several gang-related incidents since Friday. Guglielmi says those efforts have netted 18 arrests and 92 seized guns since Friday evening.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has said she’s considering replacing Johnson, but will not decide until after a more thorough study of the city’s problems, according to WGN-TV.

Guglielmi said police are questioning several people of interest in some of the incidents and detectives have good leads in others. Police have asked anyone with information to contact them.

On Twitter, Guglielmi assailed a program known as I-Bond that allows Cook County offenders to be released on a no-cash bond. The program was implemented in 1982 to address jail overcrowding.

But critics long have said it provides criminals a fast way to get back on the streets.

“Letting gun offenders out on I-Bonds shows there is absolutely no repercussion for carrying illegal guns in Chicago,” Guglielmi tweeted Sunday.

Northwestern University reportedly sent an alert to students and faculty Saturday after several people were shot near the Gold Coast campus.

Maryland couple found dead in Dominican Republic hotel room

A Maryland couple has been found dead in their hotel room in the Dominican Republic.

The news of the death of Edward Holmes and Cynthia Day, who were engaged and had posted numerous photos on social media showing how much they were enjoying their vacation, comes just days after a Delaware woman said that that she was assaulted while vacationing in the Dominican Republic earlier this year. It also comes weeks after the U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for Americans traveling there, citing a rise in crime.

The bodies of Holmes, 63, and Day, 49, were found Thursday by an employee of the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana who went to their room after they failed to check out, according to multiple published reports. The couple were scheduled to return to the U.S. that day.

CNN reported that a spokesman for the Dominican Republic National Police, Frank Felix Duran Mejia, said there was no evidence of violence.

Friends of the couple posted on Facebook that conversations with them over the phone recently indicated they were happy and excited to return home and to their future as a married couple. They arrived at the hotel on May 25.

The Dominican newspaper Diario Libre said that a hotel employee mentioned that Holmes contacted the front desk about feeling ill, but that the couple turned down treatment.

The Delaware woman, Tammy Lawrence-Daley, said she was attacked in Punta Cana, which is a popular tourist area. She said that her attacker wore a uniform that indicated he was an employee of the all-inclusive resort in which she was saying.

Lawrence-Daley, who said she was vacationing in the Dominican Republic with her husband and some friends, posted photos of her bruised and swollen face on Facebook. She suffered a broken nose, other facial fractures and bites on her body, among other things, she said.

She told the Associated Press that she went public about the attack, which she said occurred in January, to heighten awareness about the dangers of visiting the country, even for tourists staying at an all-inclusive resort.

Lawrence-Daley said the attack happened when she was walking on the property at about 10:30 p.m. to buy a snack. She said the man who attacked her came at her from behind and forced her into a maintenance room. She said the hotel employees were slow to act when her husband and friends reported that she had not returned to the room. Security workers eventually found her in the maintenance room, she said.

In March, a New York couple visiting the Dominican Republican was reported missing after they did not get on their flight home even though they checked out of their hotel at the scheduled time. Weeks later, National Police commander Frank Félix Duran Mejía said that the couple apparently had gotten into an accident, possibly due to a mix of speeding, alcohol and dark roads. Orlando Moore, 43, and Portia Ravenelle, 32, had planned a four-day getaway and also had posted photos of their vacation on social media, praising the trip. The couple’s car was retrieved from the sea, and Moore’s decomposed body was recovered from the water. Ravenelle reportedly had ended up at a hospital, where she died.

New York Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Eliot Engel wrote FBI Director Christopher Wray, indicating they wanted more evidence that the tragedy was an accident, and asking that the agency “work quickly to conduct a thorough investigation regarding details of their reported deaths that raise questions for us,” according to the New York Daily News.

The U.S. State Department issued a travel advisory for the Dominican Republic in April, urging those visiting there to “exercise increased caution…due to crime.”

“Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic,” the advisory said. “The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale.”

A police officer was shot in Chattanooga, Tenn., early Sunday during a confrontation outside a Waffle House restaurant, according to reports.

The officer was transported to a hospital but his medical condition was not immediately known.

“Police and investigators are actively working the scene,” a police spokesperson told Chattanooga’s WTVC-TV.

VIRGINIA BEACH SHINES LIGHT ON VICTIMS, NOT MASS SHOOTER

The circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately clear.

Hours earlier, Chattanooga police detained one person after two people were reportedly shot near the entrance to the city’s Riverbend music festival, outside the Tennessee Aquarium.

Both victims were shot in a parking lot, then were taken away for medical treatment but their conditions were unknown, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.

Police initially barred festival-goers from accessing their cars after the evening’s performances because investigators were still working in the parking area, which was considered an active crime scene, reports said.

Later police posted a Twitter message saying drivers were being allowed to retrieve their vehicles.

Performers at the event included rapper Macklemore. It was the final night of the festival, the Times Free Press reported.

Police: Former Delaware city councilman arrested after striking gay pride parade organizer with truck

A former Delaware councilman was arrested Saturday after police said he struck an organizer of a gay pride parade in Dover with his truck.

Reuben Salters, 90, was charged with third-degree vehicular assault and related offenses and released on his own recognizance, Dover Police Cpl. Mark Hoffman said in a statement.

Salters was driving a Ford Ranger around 8:15 a.m. when he approached Forrest and West Streets, which were blocked off for the Delaware Pride Festival parade. He got out of the truck, got back in and drove to an area with a large group of paradegoers blocked off by cones, police said.

Salters exited the truck again and began moving the cones. The parade’s 43-year-old organizer approached Salters and advised him that he couldn’t pass through, Hoffman said. Slaters got in the truck and allegedly “proceeded to accelerate” and struck the man.

The organizer was knocked to the ground and suffered injuries to his legs. Salters than tried driving through a large crowd until he was stopped, Hoffman said. The man was not hospitalized, WBOC-TV reported. There no evidence to suggest the incident was a hate crime told the outlet, according to Hoffman.

Chicago prosecutors have charged R. Kelly with 11 new sex-related charges involving one accuser, including some that carry a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

The new charges against the Grammy-award winning R&B singer included aggravated criminal assault, criminal sexual assault by force, criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual abuse against a victim between the ages of 13 to 16, the Chicago Tribune reported.

According to the case filing, the first eight counts were from alleged encounters between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31, 2010. Three others pertained to alleged encounters between May 1, 2009, and Jan. 31, 2010. The accuser was identified in court documents only as “J.P.”

R. KELLY PLANS NEW TOUR AMID SEXUAL ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS

Prosecutors alleged Kelly used force or threatened to use force to pressure the accuser into performing oral sex on him.

Kelly, who is free on $1 million bond following his February indictment in other sex abuse cases, is expected to appear in court for the new charges on June 6. He already faced 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse involving four women years ago, three of whom were minors when the alleged abuse occurred.

He pleaded not guilty to the original charges and has denied any wrongdoing.

It was unclear if “J.P.” is a new accuser or one of the four who Kelly, 52, is charged with sexually abusing. Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, suggested in a tweet that it was an existing case.

TIMELINE OF R. KELLY’S LIFE AND CAREER

Greenberg told the Chicago Sun-Times he received word of the new charges from prosecutors but had not seen any filings.

R. KELLY PAYS $62,000 IN BACK CHILD SUPPORT TO EX-WIFE

“We’ll see what it is, and we’ll deal with it accordingly,” he told the Tribune on Thursday.

Kelly has been dogged for years by sex-abuse allegations involving underage girls and women. He was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008 after being accused of filming himself having sex with his goddaughter. She was believed to be 13 at the time.

Scrutiny from investigators ramped up after the Lifetime network aired a six-hour documentary, “Surviving R. Kelly,” in January. The series alleged he manipulated young women into joining a “sex cult” and forcing them against their will to stay with him.

Protesters have pressured radio stations and streaming services to stop playing Kelly’s music and for promoters to stop booking him. Lifetime recently aired a follow-up to the docuseries titled “Surviving R. Kelly: The Impact” earlier this month.

Passenger’s ‘CALL 911’ sign leads to arrest of alleged kidnapper, police say

The woman in the passenger seat of a vehicle at a gas station near New York City was holding a sign that said, “Please call 911, CALL 911.” A witness at the gas station saw the sign and contacted police.

When officers arrived Tuesday afternoon, they arrested a 36-year-old man who was allegedly holding his girlfriend and her three boys – a 13-year-old as well as 3-year-old twins with developmental disorders – inside the vehicle under a threat of violence, according to reports.

The suspect, identified as William Jamal Wilkinson, of Ridge on Long Island, refused to let them out, police said.

Gunman accused of shooting ex admits he lied about aiming at bear, authorities say

A Virginia man was arrested Tuesday, accused of deliberately shooting his former boyfriend despite initially telling investigators he had been aiming at a bear, a report said.

Maurice D. Lee, 26, of Suffolk, was charged with one count of assault with intent to commit murder, authorities said, adding that he could get 20 years in prison if convicted.

Lee reported that a shooting had taken place May 12 in the Great Dismal Swamp Refuge, which he visited with the ex, identified by authorities only as M.J., the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported.

When officers arrived, they found M.J. lying face down with a single gunshot wound, the newspaper reported.

Lee told police that when he and M.J. were walking along a trail, a bear began following M.J., so Lee said he attempted to shoot the animal but hit M.J. instead, the newspaper reported.

After M.J. was shot, he told authorities, Lee walked over to him and said, “Oh, you’re still breathing?,” according to the paper.

Lee later admitted lying about the bear story, then claimed instead that the two men were “tussling” when the gun suddenly went off.

Missouri man says White Castle patron shot at him for honking his horn in drive-thru line

A driver at a Missouri White Castle drive-thru told Fox News that another driver allegedly shot at him because he honked his horn while waiting on line.

“I ordered a couple double cheeseburgers, your usual combo meal, and was just going to head home and have dinner with my girlfriend and it just became a little more eventful than I expected,” the 51-year-old St. Louis man said.

The victim, who asked to remain anonymous because the shooter has not yet been arrested, said that he honked his horn because the car in front of him was taking an exceptionally long time at the window.

“I think I was sitting there for about 10 to 15 minutes, and with no one else in line I thought that was a little unreasonable,” the victim said.

HUNTER FILMED ORDERING MCDONALD’S WHILE CARRYING DEAD DEER OVER HIS SHOULDER

He added that “it almost appeared that he was having some sort of dispute with the restaurant or someone in the restaurant.”

The man said because there were only two cars in the drive-thru line, that “made it all the more frustrating that it was taking so long,” adding, “That’s why I honked in the first place.”

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department told Fox News the incident happened Thursday night around 9. The victim said it all started at a White Castle on Gravois Avenue in south St. Louis.

The man said that after he honked, the other driver at the drive-thru jumped out of his car and started yelling what sounded like profanity, although he couldn’t make out exactly what the driver was saying because he’d kept his windows closed.

He said the other driver then got back inside the car and pulled over “to the side of the parking lot as if he was waiting for a large order.”

The 51-year-old man thought the confrontation was over so he picked up his food and started to drive away, adding that “it wasn’t until I pulled out to one of the main streets and headed home that I realized he had other intentions.”

The man said he realized that the other driver was following him. He also said that driver soon fired a shot at him.

“I heard the bullet come through the door,” the victim said.

“And then I got home and I was still kind of in shock and had difficulty believing what happened,” he continued.

The man said he didn’t feel anything right away but once he got home he realized the bullet had grazed his leg.

“I noticed at that point also that my windshield had been shattered which could have been possibly a second shot or something that was thrown at the vehicle. And then I saw a hole in the door and saw my jeans that I was wearing had a hole ripped in them where I was grazed.”

“I suffered about a two-inch scratch in the back of my left thigh where the bullet passed and then embedded in the seat,” the victim said.

“People certainly told me that I had gotten very lucky,” he said.

The victim said he hopes the man who shot at him gets caught soon.

“I think he poses a danger to other people,” he said.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department told Fox News it’s seekingr an “unknown black male, 20 to 25-year old” who is around 180 pounds with a medium complexion and “low afro-style hair.”

The man said he thinks the security cameras in the White Castle parking lot could help police with their investigation.

“I think this was a random case of road rage,” he said. “But it does reflect a certain reality that people living in St. Louis understand, you always have to be aware of your surroundings.”

Owner of Mexico school that collapsed during earthquake, killing 19 children, arrested for manslaughter

Mexican authorities have arrested the owner of an elementary school that was destroyed in 2017 in a 7.1.earthquake, killing 19 children and seven adults.

Authorities say the fatalities likely could have been avoided if illegal construction work had not been performed at the school in 2010, reported multiple news outlets. Police said that the owner of the school building illegally had an apartment built over the part of the structure that experienced the most damage in the earthquake.

The owner, Mónica García Villegas, had been in hiding — missing court dates, eluding police — until Saturday, when authorities received an email tipping them off to her whereabouts.

“We arrested her,” said Mexico City Attorney General Ernestina Godoy at a press conference over the weekend. “The crime is [involuntary] manslaughter.”

Godoy attributed the arrest to a reward of 5 million pesos ($263,000) that authorities announced in late-April for information leading to García Villegas’ whereabouts. The tip line received information from 16 tipsters suggesting locations in at least six different states.

“We went to all of them,” Godoy said.

The collapse of the Enrique Rebsamen school came to symbolize the corruption and impunity that plague Mexican construction. Garcia Villegas is accused of having her apartment built using fraudulent permits, among other things. Infobae.com reports that the construction of her apartment compromised the structural integrity of the building, causing some damage during the work on the addition.

The search for survivors at Rebsamen captured the attention of people worldwide amid reports shortly after the quake that a girl was purportedly trapped alive in the school’s rubble. Authorities later announced that the girl never existed.

Godoy said there are still arrest warrants out for two construction overseers who authorized the additions at the school, despite insufficient steel or other supports to sustain the extra weight.

The earthquake killed 228 people in the capital and 141 others in nearby states.

Judge Esperanza Medrano Ortiz ordered Garcia Villegas held under police custody until a court hearing on Thursday, reported Mexico News Daily.

“I’m innocent, I didn’t kill those children,” Garcia Villegas said. “I would never allow such a situation for my students.”

But relatives of the children who died expressed anger, and stood outside the courthouse yelling “Mónica, murderer!” and holding signs that said, “How do you feel having taken away so many lives?”
