Ken Starr: Mueller testimony presents ‘golden opportunity’ to Republicans

House Republicans on the Judiciary and Intelligence committees will have a unique opportunity to question former Special Counsel Robert Mueller after Democrats pressed to have him come and testify, according to former independent counsel Ken Starr.

GOP lawmakers should delve into several topics about which their questions have gone largely unanswered, Starr claimed Friday on “Hannity.”

“This is going to be a great opportunity,” said Starr, the independent counsel for the Clinton-era Whitewater probe. “The Republicans are going to be on the spot. They are being given… a golden opportunity to get some questions answered that we all have.

DEAL STRUCK FOR MUELLER TO APPEAR, GIVE EXTENDED TESTIMONY BEFORE CONGRESS JULY 24

“I think Republicans will do well to drill into the report and to say such things as ‘the transition period proved that there were no connections between Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin, and the Trump organization and the Trump campaign,’.”

“‘Why couldn’t you say that much more directly?’,” Starr claimed Mueller should be asked.

He said Republicans should press Mueller as to why the report reads to some people as if the president was not given any “benefit of the doubt.”

“You really wrote this for Congress and you had no authority to do that,” Starr said of Mueller. “You were to write a confidential report to the attorney general of the United States explaining your prosecution decisions and your declination decisions.

“Mr. Mueller, some would call that an abuse of power.”

On Friday, Planning for former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s highly anticipated testimony was thrown into disarray as multiple sources said the hearing was delayed amid a “breakdown in negotiations” — yet others indicated it could still go forward next week as planned.

Late Friday, Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., announced that Mueller’s appearance before both committees had been pushed back one week, to July 24. Mueller is scheduled to testify before the Judiciary Committee for three hours beginning at 8:30 a.m. before appearing before the Intelligence Committee that afternoon.

Nadler and Schiff promised that “[a]ll members—Democrats and Republicans—of both committees will have a meaningful opportunity to question the Special Counsel in public, and the American people will finally have an opportunity to hear directly from Mr. Mueller about what his investigation uncovered.”

Trey Gowdy: Unless Mueller ‘fumbles,’ not much will be learned from testimony

There’s little chance that former Special Counsel Robert Mueller will reveal any significant new information about his Russia investigation when he testifies on Capitol Hill later this month, former U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy said Friday.

In fact, Gowdy said on Fox News’ “Hannity,” the only significant thing Mueller could possibly say is whether he would have indicted Donald Trump if he were a private citizen instead of president of the United States.

“I think what the Democrats are going to focus on is, had that [Justice Department] policy not been in place [against indicting a sitting president], would you have indicted private citizen Donald Trump? That’s the only thing that can come out of this for the Democrats that would be significant,” Gowdy told host Sean Hannity.

TREY GOWDY: MUELLER DOES NOT WANT TO ‘PARTICIPATE’ IN KEEPING THE RUSSIA STORY ALIVE

Mueller was supposed to appear before the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees this coming Wednesday but on Friday his scheduled hearings were postponed until July 24.

Gowdy — a Republican who declined to seek re-election last November after representing South Carolina‘s 4th Congressional District for four terms, from 2011 until January of this year — also advised Republicans to ask Mueller about all the things he “didn’t bother to look for” during an investigation that lasted two years.

“If you’re a Republican,” Gowdy said, “you’re going to want to ask about bias. You’re going to want to ask about what you didn’t look into — and I also have a bunch of friends on that committee. I would spend all of my time getting Mueller to talk about things he didn’t bother to look for.”

The former chairman of the House Oversight Committee (2017-2019) and House Benghazi Committee (2014-2016) told Hannity that America wouldn’t learn much from the hearings unless Mueller “fumbles.”

“Trust me when I say, Sean … We’re not going to learn a lot unless he fumbles. The answer from my point of view, the Republican point of view, if he fumbles, the answer on why he did not indict Donald Trump, then this thing will continue to go on for another six to nine, twelve months,” Gowdy said.

Buck Sexton: Dems’ objection to planned ICE raids a step toward ‘mass nullification of immigration law’

Westlake Legal Group AP19172820715514 Buck Sexton: Dems' objection to planned ICE raids a step toward 'mass nullification of immigration law' fox-news/us/immigration/illegal-immigrants fox-news/us/immigration/border-security fox-news/topic/fox-news-flash fox-news/shows/tucker-carlson-tonight fox-news/politics/senate/democrats fox-news/politics/house-of-representatives/democrats fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/politics fnc Charles Creitz article 32053a7d-7e01-5b42-995d-4fb49828afae

Democrats are inching closer to effectively opposing any law governing immigration, according to radio host and former CIA analyst Buck Sexton.

Politicians who made critical statements ahead of planned ICE raids this weekend believe some people can ignore certain laws if the statute does not follow Democratic orthodoxy, Sexton claimed Friday on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

WHY THOSE ICE RAIDS ARE BEING ANNOUNCED IN ADVANCE

“There’s a momentum toward insanity at this point,” he said, adding: “It’s quite clear that they’re engaged in mass nullification of immigration law.”

Sexton was reacting to statements by several Democratic politicians, in a montage played by host Tucker Carlson.

In the video, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., called the raids “a crime against humanity.”

Responding, Carlson said he believed Harris was saying that enforcing court-ordered deportations is somehow a crime.

In another example, Hillary Clinton tweeted a cautionary flyer in Spanish with the caption “Por favor comparte” or “please share.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., released a video in which he advised people who receive visits from law enforcement to respond, “No abras la puerta.” (“Do not open the door.”)

“Without a warrant, you do not have to open the door,” Newsom said.

In response, Sexton claimed such politicians are flirting with defying another immigration law.

“They’re getting close to violating another statute of immigration, which is aiding and abetting,” he said.

WAR CRIMINALS AMONG US: INSIDE THE QUIET EFFORT TO PROSECUTE AND DEPORT VIOLATORS DISGUISED AS REFUGEES

Carlson further added, “picture a Republican governor making a video, telling voters how to cheat on their taxes, or how to buy illegal guns.”

Starting Sunday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is expected to resume its previously announced plan to apprehend thousands of illegal immigrants across the country.

The reinvigorated effort comes just weeks after President Trump tweeted that ICE was preparing to kick off days of raids in at least 10 major cities. The operation was halted, however, the day before it was set to start, to give Congress time to arrive at a legislative solution on immigration. Trump said his administration would relaunch the raids after a two-week window, and that time now seems to have arrived.

“It’s unprecedented. But there is a political purpose behind it,” Thomas Kilbride, a retired Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agent and ICE policy adviser, told Fox News. He said the president has tried to get Democrats to come to the table because asylum laws need to change, and this is a way to bargain.

ICE agents are expected to target a minimum of 2,000 immigrants who have already been listed for deportation, but Kilbride said there will be “collateral” fallout.

Michael Knowles: Piece calling ‘Lion King’ fascist ‘the stupidest article I’ve ever read in The Washington Post’

“Who knew?”

That’s the reaction from conservative commentator Michael Knowles after a Dutch professor wrote a Washington Post column criticizing Disney’s classic “The Lion King” as both fascist and racist.

Conservatives, moderates and some Democrats have been painted as fascistic, and now animated children’s tales have joined their ranks, Knowles asserted Friday on “The Story.”

“I’m actually just so pleased that for the last three years that every American slightly to the left of Hillary Clinton has been called a fascist — and now we’re in the same company as a beloved Disney cartoon character,” he said.

“This was the stupidest article I’ve ever read in the Washington Post.”

In the article, Utrecht University media studies professor Dan Hassler-Forest argues that the “nostalgic”-feeling Circle of Life scene is “a painful reminder of the film’s ideological agenda: It introduces us to a society where the weak have learned to worship at the feet of the strong.”

“‘The Lion King’ offers us fascist ideology writ large, and there is no obvious way out for the remake. … With the lions standing in for the ruling class, and the “good” herbivores embodying society’s decent, law-abiding citizens, the hyenas transparently represent the black, brown and disabled bodies that are forcefully excluded from this hierarchical society,” Hassler-Forest wrote.

In his response, Knowles said the professor’s claims are an example of the problems he sees on college campuses.

“The trouble is this was written by a professor, and that tells you all you need to know about higher education,” he said.

“Everything they don’t like is Hitlerian. … Kingdoms are fascistic,” he continued, adding the latter conclusion must be “news to” the U.K.’s Queen Elizabeth II.

Knowles said he sees “The Lion King” as a charming tale based on themes in “Hamlet” and the Old Testament books of Genesis and Exodus.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards voiced concerns Friday on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” that residents would not take Tropical Storm Barry seriously, even though it is expected to become a full-blown hurricane by the time it hits the Louisiana coast on Saturday morning.

“My biggest concern is that we will have citizens who understand that it’s a Category 1 and they may not take it as seriously as they should have. Because this is has always been a rain event predominantly,” Edwards said.

“And we’re going to have 15 to 20 inches of rain across most of southern Louisiana for about 24 hours.”

TROPICAL STORM BARRY’S PATH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Tropical Storm Barry is bringing flooding and rainfall, threatening cities like New Orleans and unsettling government officials.

Barry is forecast to dump 10 to 20 inches of rain on New Orleans through Sunday. Some isolated areas could see as much as 25 inches.

Edwards advised residents to “take every precaution, to be patient,” and to listen to their local elected officials.

The governor also told MacCallum that he expected Barry to be “a tough one,” noting that even after the rains stop, river swelling may cause problems for residents and officials.

“I worry an awful lot about the rain as it falls, not as it relates to the Mississippi River but all the other rivers that we have across south Louisiana,” Edwards said.

Is the Democratic Party advocating for open borders?

Fox News’ Jesse Watters said as much in the wake of their reaction to President Trump’s defense of upcoming Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement (ICE) raids.

“You have Democrats saying don’t follow the laws of our country. They want American citizens to follow the laws but they don’t want illegal aliens so at this point you have to think, do they want any enforcement? They don’t want it in the interior. They don’t want it at the border,” Watters said.

“They don’t want you to have to stay in the country that you are and apply when you get there. They don’t want you detained if you commit a crime in a sanctuary city, they don’t want to let us know about it. They don’t even want the federal government to ask you a question, are you a U.S. citizen?”

The “Watters’ World” host then outlined what he believes Democrats are “offering” illegal immigrants.

“What they do want, they want to give you an American job. They want to give you a driver’s license, in-state college tuition and they want to give you free health insurance. So at this point, the Democrats are the party of open borders and that’s just a fact,” Watters said.

Co-host Greg Gutfeld praised Trump and the logic of the immigration raids.

“Word gets out that we’re going to deport people who are there illegally disincentivizes people from coming here. It’s the opposite of waving caravans through,” Gutfeld said.

The Greg Gutfeld Show” host said he believed Democrats were “losing” the American public over the issue of immigration.

“So these are two things that human beings understand fairness and incentives. These are two things that the Democrats can’t get into their thick skulls. And that’s why they’re losing the American public and they’re devouring themselves,” Gutfeld said.

The crisis along the U.S.-Mexico border is finally being accepted as such but Congress must allow for specific policy changes that will alleviate the turmoil, according to a Customs and Border Protection official.

The funding Congress approved is helping conditions but there is a long way to go until the border is secure and detainees are handled efficiently, CBP Deputy Commissioner Robert Perez claimed Friday on “Your World.”

“We have been, in CBP and the Department of Homeland Security, sounding the alarm on the overcrowding and the unprecedented migration crisis for the better part of 18 months,” he said.

“It’s universally accepted now that we do have a crisis.

“And now, we need targeted changes to the legal framework to get to the heart of the matter.”

In addition, Perez said his department needs help going after people he believes to be willing participants accentuating the crisis.

“Alien smuggling organizations are profiting off the back of this crisis — off the back of children by virtue of smuggling children and using them as virtual passports across the border… to profit their illegal endeavors.

“The targeted changes to the legal framework absolutely have to change to end this crisis.”

In regard to critiques from lawmakers who claim officials have been less than forthcoming about conditions on the border and have aggravated the situation, Perez said his officers have acted responsibly.

“We have been open and honest about that discussion,” he said.

Bill and Hillary Clinton got a taste of New York’s state of mind on Thursday night.

After the Long Island-born legend dedicated a song to the former first couple and flashed them up on the screen at Madison Square Garden, initial cheers turned to boos from the audience.

The former First Lady has been under scrutiny for years as she criticized President Trump and attempted to lay out the reasons she thought were behind her loss to him in the 2016 election. Former President Bill Clinton, on the other hand, faced fresh criticism surrounding his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein who, on Monday, was indicted on sex trafficking charges.

A Clinton spokesman denied the former president had any knowledge of Epstein’s crimes, noting that he took “a total of four trips” with Epstein in 2002 and 2003.

“In 2002 and 2003, President Clinton took a total of four trips on Jeffrey Epstein’s airplane: one to Europe, one to Asia, and two to Africa, which included stops in connection with the work of the Clinton Foundation,” the statement read.

An investigative journalist later told Fox News, however, that Clinton wasn’t telling the truth about either the flights or his knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.

Journalist Conchita Sarnoff, who first broke the Epstein story back in 2010, says the number of flights isn’t accurate, claiming that Clinton was a guest on Epstein’s planes many more times over a longer period.

“I know from the pilot logs and these are pilot logs that you know were written by different pilots and at different times that Clinton went, he was a guest of Epstein’s 27 times,” she said, adding that “many of those times Clinton had his Secret Service with him and many times he did not.”

Hillary Clinton similarly encountered speculation over her relationship with Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who allegedly sexually assaulted multiple women over years. At the end of 2017, the former presidential candidate condemned Weinstein’s alleged behavior and said she was “shocked” to hear about it.

In June, the couple also caught attention for the underwhelming ticket sales a Broadway depiction of them received — leading to an early end long before its initially-scheduled end date of July 24.

“The View” host Joy Behar tore into Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta on Friday’s episode, joking that his retirement would allow him to move onto to defending another alleged sex offender.

“He’s kind of free to defend R.Kelly now, isn’t he?” Behar asked, referring to the singer arrested Thursday on child pornography and other charges. “He has the skill set.”

Co-host Meghan McCain seemed slightly disturbed, remarking, “Oh God…” When Behar asked McCain if she was too rough, McCain didn’t respond.

“The View” hosts have been critical of Acosta, calling for his resignation amid news that Jeffrey Epstein faced an indictment on sex trafficking charges. Acosta has been accused of giving Epstein a “sweetheart” plea deal in 2008 when he was a U.S. attorney in Miami, Florida.

Co-host Sunny Hostin, for example, accused Acosta of allowing “new victims to be victimized.” Acosta announced his resignation on Friday morning while appearing alongside President Donald Trump.

“Over the last week, I’ve seen a lot of coverage about the Department of Labor,” Acosta said, noting news headlines have been focusing on the Epstein scandal — “I do not think it is right and fair to this administration’s Labor Department to have Epstein as the focus rather than the incredible economy that we have today.”

“And so I called the President this morning. I told him that I thought the right thing was to step aside,” he added.

Co-host Ana Navarro said that she hoped Acosta’s resignation wouldn’t be the end of his legal troubles. “He needs to be held accountable and we need answers,” she said.

President Trump, on Twitter, praised Acosta and called out the way the press treated him.

“Alex Acosta informed me this morning that he felt the constant drumbeat of press about a prosecution which took place under his watch more than 12 years ago was bad for the Administration, which he so strongly believes in, and he graciously tendered his resignation,” he said. According to Trump, Acosta’s deputy, Pat Pizzella, will replace him.

CNN ‘making things easier’ for Democrats with odd debate guidelines, Washington Post media critic says

CNN’s crummy week continued on Thursday when liberal Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple questioned why the struggling network is “making things easier” for Democrats who plan to participate in the upcoming debate.

CNN announced that its two-night event on July 30-31 won’t feature the news-making, show-of-hands questions that have been the highlight of past debates on MSNBC and Fox News. CNN will also punish any candidate who constantly interrupts by reducing their time, and down-the-line questions won’t be asked, either.

Washington Post media critic Erik Wemple questioned by CNN moderators won’t be allowed to ask certain questions of 2020 Democratic hopefuls.

“What?” Wemple wrote. ”Even if CNN decided that it doesn’t like the theater of such questions; even if CNN decided that it doesn’t want its debates to make headlines; even if CNN decided that it didn’t want to put the candidates on the spot regarding contemporary controversies; even if CNN decided that it didn’t want good ratings; even if CNN decided that, somehow, these sorts of questions were journalistically corrupt, why would it broadcast this limitation in a public release?”

Wemple went on to ask why CNN would “crimp its moderators… plucking a wrench from their toolboxes?”

The media blogger – whose face appears on the coffee mug awarded to the weekly “Final Exam” winner during “Tucker Carlson Tonight” — then listed questions that he asked CNN: “Was that the idea of CNN or of the candidates/DNC? Did anyone other than CNN suggest this restriction? Why limit the sorts of questions that your moderators may ask? Aren’t yes-or-no questions sometimes critical for journalism?”

“It was a decision made by CNN,” a CNN spokesperson told the Post.

THIS IS CNN? PRIMETIME SHOWS FILLED WITH LIBERAL OPINION, NOT STRAIGHT NEWS AS NETWORK CLAIMS

“Questions seeking a show of hands or one-word answers, to be sure, come off as cheesy stunts made for cable news. They also have a knack of focusing a debate and pushing blathering politicians off their talking points. Which of you would use military force against Iran — yes or no? Which of you would sign such-and-such a bill? The Democratic candidates prepping for Detroit should feel relieved that they won’t have to contend with any such queries,” Wemple wrote.

Wemple is typically a staunch critic of Fox News but gave a glowing review of the inaugural Fox Nation fan summit in Scottsdale, Ariz. back in May.

While Wemple hammered CNN for going easy on Democratic candidates, DePauw University professor and media critic Jeffrey McCall has criticized other elements of the upcoming debate, such as selecting “CNN Tonight” host Don Lemon to moderate alongside Dana Bash and Jake Tapper.

“CNN is planning a live lottery [to determine the lineup], which looks like a game-show gimmick. CNN is also putting commentator Don Lemon on the panel of questioners, which opens up CNN to the same kind of criticism NBC got when it put Rachel Maddow on the debate panel,” McCall said.

CNN insists Lemon is an anchor, but media watchdogs and even some CNN staffers are aware that he offers his own opinions on a nightly basis and debate moderators are historically nonpartisan.

“To pretend he’s not an opinion host is lunacy,” a CNN employee told Fox News.

CNN’S DON LEMON DOESN’T LET ‘ANCHOR’ TITLE GET IN THE WAY OF HIS ON-AIR OPINIONS

CNN’s upcoming debates aren’t the only things that have been criticized this week, as the network’s on-going ratings issues have caught the attention from everyone from rank-and-file employees to President Trump.

A dismal second quarter was followed up with “the network’s lowest average since 2015” when it comes to primetime viewers among the key demographic of adults age 25-54 during the first week of Q3, according to TVNewser.

“The marketplace is speaking to CNN and CNN has not been listening. The ratings struggles at CNN reflect that news consumers are losing confidence in the organization. The primetime lineup has failed to deliver ratings and the heavy ideological thrust of prime time could well be dampening viewership for the more newsy daytime shows,” McCall said. “CNN may have overplayed its Trump fascination over the last two years, particularly in prime time. Even CNN founder Ted Turner chimed in last fall suggesting that CNN needed a more balanced agenda.”
