David Axelrod says Biden seemed ‘confused’ at debate, seemed ‘part of the past’

Former Obama advisor David Axelrod ripped former Vice President Joe Biden for his debate peformance on Thursday night, saying he appeared “confused” and “defensive.”

During a CNN panel following the second Democratic debate, Axelrod began by expressing it was a “tougher night” for the “seasoned candidates” on the stage.

“They seemed like part of the past rather than the future,” Axelrod explained.

The ex-White House official then took aim at Biden as well as Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT.

“At times, the vice president seemed somewhat confused to me in handling some of the questions… He actually seemed a bit defensive,” Axelrod continued. “Bernie Sanders… he might have been a hologram. A lot of what we’ve heard tonight we’ve heard many, many times before.”

He added, “I think they seemed a bit mired in the past.”

Biden had a testy exchange with Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif, about his remarks about the segregationists he previously worked with in the Senate as well as his record on bussing. And when asked what his first action would be as president, Biden vowed to defeat President Trump.

This isn’t the first time Axelrod has criticized President Obama’s running mate. Earlier this month, the now-CNN commentator said that Biden was playing into Trump’s “caricature” of him being mentally weak.

Frank Luntz: Debates show ‘This is not your parents’ Democratic Party’

The Democratic Party is becoming unrecognizable from what it was a generation ago, according to pollster Frank Luntz.

This week’s 2020 Democratic presidential debates are the latest proof the party has lurched to the left in recent years, Luntz said Thursday on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

“This is not your parents’ Democratic Party,” he said. “This isn’t even your older sister’s Democratic Party. It has changed considerably. And over the last two-and-a-half years, it has lost the center — both on economic policy and … on social policy.

BIDEN GRILLED BY HARRIS ON RACE RECORD AT CHAOTIC DEBATE, AS BERNIE’S ‘SOCIALIST’ AGENDA CHALLENGED

“The question for the Democrats right now is, are they going to move so far left that they lose the center and have no ability to unite between now and 16 months from now?”

Luntz added he believed Democrats are speaking to a more liberal audience than the eventual nominee will be addressing when that candidate challenges President Trump in a general election debate next year.

“These are Democratic debates,” he said of this week’s events.

DEM DEBATE: SWALWELL ZINGS BIDEN ON HIS AGE, CALLS ON HIM TO ‘PASS THE TORCH’

“They are trying to appeal to a Democratic audience — an audience that is often atheist or agnostic or at least not regular churchgoers. So the audience itself represents — the language they are using represents — the average Democrat today.”

One Democratic candidate on the second night’s debate stage also alluded to changes in the Democratic Party.

U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., addressed former Vice President Joe Biden, asking him to “pass the torch,” as the longtime U.S. senator from Delaware himself had said during a previous presidential bid.

Swalwell, one of the youngest candidates in the 2020 field, took a direct swipe at Biden’s age during Thursday’s debate.

“I was six years old when a presidential candidate came to the California Democratic Convention and said, ‘It’s time to pass the torch to a new generation of Americans.’ That candidate was then-Senator Joe Biden,” Swalwell said.

“Joe Biden was right 32 years ago, and he’s still right today.”

Acting Homeland Security chief denies leaking info on ICE raids: ‘It’s just not true’

The acting head of the Department of Homeland Security on Thursday night denied leaking information that eventually led to the cancellation of ICE raids in 10 cities across America.

“I would not, have not, ever leaked details of a sensitive law enforcement operation,” acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

“My primary responsibility,” he added, “is the safety of the men and women who go out there every day to protect the American people. And so it’s just not true.”

TRUMP DELAYS PLANNED ICE RAIDS TO SEE IF CONGRESS CAN SOLVE BORDER CRISIS

“My primary responsibility is the safety of the men and women who go out there every day to protect the American people. And so it’s just not true.”

— Kevin McAleenan, acting DHS secretary

McAleenan was accused last week of leaking plans for raids scheduled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a unit of the DHS, after supposedly expressing fierce opposition to the plan and allegedly ordering top officials to “stand down” on the operation.

The source also said Homeland Security officials had been planning the raids since April and that McAleenan had been opposed to the plans from the start.

McAleenan also denied that anyone in his office leaked the information after host Laura Ingraham pressed further, saying that as the operation date nears “you have to push information out into the field.”

“So tonight you’re saying these rumors are wrong false and you did not do that?” Ingraham asked.

“Absolutely not,” McAleenan responded.

The acting secretary also commented on the Democratic presidential candidates advocating for decriminalizing illegal border crossings, saying it would “further undermine our efforts at the border” and increase the numbers of those crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.

“Decriminalizing crossing between ports of entry when we know it’s associated with criminal smugglers … when they know they bring drugs behind those people that are crossing, it would just add to the problem,” McAleenan said.

McAleenan was also asked about the candidates’ platform of free health care for illegal immigrants.

“We’ve got a lot of issues to solve domestically [with] the homeless population and medical care as it is,” McAleenan said.

Huckabee: 2020 Democrats trying to ‘outbid’ each other further left

Former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said Democrats running to unseat President Trump in 2020 were trying to outshine each other by proving they’re further to the left during Wednesday night’s debate.

“It was evident that there was a very dramatic attempt, it was almost like an auction, to see who can outbid who in the most left of center approach,” Huckabee, a Republican, said on “The Story with Martha MacCallum.”

The first of the 2020 primary debates showcased discussions on immigration, health care and climate change with many conservative critics saying the candidates have moved too far left.

RNC MCDANIEL SAYS ‘RADICALIZATION’ OF DEM PARTY ON ‘FULLY DISPLAY’ AT DEBATES

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez told Fox News on Thursday that “many candidates” in the crowded Democratic primary field would be able to beat President Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

The former Arkansas governor said he thought ultimately “middle America” won’t connect with a far-left candidate.

“That may work in the primary but I think there are a lot of Democrat voters across this country who are uncomfortable with the party going this far left. The party and the people of it, in middle of America, they’ve never been that far out there,” Huckabee said.

Former DNC chairwoman Donna Brazile also appeared with Huckabee and said she believed Americans wanted to hear a debate on the issues and pointed out that a moderate direction was still an option.

“I’m trying to explain to the Fox viewers and others that this is a very important period in our country where they want to see the Democratic candidates debate these issues,” Brazile said.

“At the end of the day, we might decide to go with a moderate, we might decide to go with somebody who’s perhaps is further to the left and I am. But the good news is that as Americans, we can have this conversation.”

Supporting Medicare-for-all proposals will not help Democrats win the White House in 2020, according to presidential candidate and former Rep. John Delaney, D-Md.

More liberal candidates are mimicking the position of Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., which could lead to President Trump’s reelection, Delaney claimed Thursday on “The Story.”

“I think it’s a terrible plan,” he said.

“The single-payer, Medicare-for-all bill that these people are all getting behind is a terrible health care policy and it’s terrible politics. I believe we will lose the election if we put up a nominee who runs on this.

“We have kind of mindlessly been following Senator Sanders – who’s not even a Democrat by the way – on this issue.”

He added he believed Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., “outsourced” her health care platform to Sanders.

The former lawmaker claimed his more moderate plan to provide health care coverage to all Americans was something voters could get behind.

“I think they saw me as someone who is pragmatic and practical and uses common sense and tries to solve problems,” he said.

“That’s been the theme of my campaign from the beginning.

“Someone has to stand up and talk about it because I can assure you if we put a nominee of who runs on this, Donald Trump is going to talk about it. He’s never going to shut up about it.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif, took an early swipe at former Vice President Joe Biden ahead of their debate on Thursday, suggesting he wouldn’t have to “live” with the decisions that he’d make in office.

None of the 10 candidates who appeared in the first debate, held Wednesday night, laid a glove on the former vice president, who was not on the stage but loomed large as the apparent front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination.

But during his appearance on CNN, Swalwell elaborated on his strategy related to Biden, who will be on stage with nine others on Thursday for Debate No. 2.

“I’m going to tell the country that we are at our best when we move in one direction … forward,” Swalwell said. “That we in our past, whether it was Presidents Carter, Clinton, Obama or President Kennedy in the past, it was always a page forward. The American people see these issues today as issues of the future — we can’t have a candidate who has ideas that are staler than Donald Trump’s.”

“So you think Biden is the candidate of the past?” CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin asked.

“I don’t think we can nominate a candidate who has been in government for longer than 20 years. I just don’t think that’s going to work,” Swalwell responded. “I think we need someone who’s going to offer a vision for the future, who lives and gets these issues on student debt, gun violence, health care cures, climate chaos. Again, we can’t nibble around the edges anymore, these are issues that will affect us and the next generation. And I’ll be a president that will have to live with the decisions I make and so I think that, too, has to be a priority.”

Swalwell will be sharing the stage with several frontrunners, including Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.

An MSNBC panel reacting to the first night of Democratic debates got heated because one pundit warned that President Trump could still win in 2020, according to Jesse Watters.

Donny Deutsch’s comments casting doubt on candidates’ ability to win next year caused a stir with nighttime host Lawrence O’Donnell, Watters said Thursday on “The Five.”

“O’Donnell might’ve just wanted to shut Donny down because he didn’t want to hear that on a night when the Democrats were supposed to shine,” he said.

“And, they didn’t shine. There were no stars on that stage. The only star was Rachel Maddow. None of those people rose to the occasion last night.

“None of them were competitive enough… If you can put Donald Trump on the stage next to any of these people in a one-on-one he’d eat their lunch.”

Deutsch, an MSNBC commentator, told the panel Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., the highest-polling candidate on that stage, may have trouble against Trump.

“My issue, unfortunately, and do not shoot the messenger, is the messenger,” he said.

Deutsch’s remarks elicited a response from O’Donnell.

“Let’s just identify this for what it is,” he said.

He told Deutsch his statement had “zero value,” prompting Deutsch to respond.

Watters claimed O’Donnell was “thinking with his heart,” while Deutsch was “thinking with his head.”

Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro’s concentration on immigration policy should win him accolades for his 2020 primary debate performance, according to Juan Williams.

The former Housing and Urban Development secretary chose the correct topic to concentrate on during the first of two debates this week, Williams claimed Thursday on “The Daily Briefing.”

“I would agree that Julian Castro was the breakout star of the night,” he said, responding to similar comments from Republican strategist Colin Reed.

“It was because immigration is such an important topic at this moment, given the photo we have all seen, and the debate in the House,” the “Five” co-host continued, referencing a photo of a migrant father and daughter who drowned.

“It was stage center and Julian Castro was ready for it.”

However, Williams claimed some of Castro’s positions on immigration may or may not play well in a general election setting.

“Now the difficulty would be… when Castro says I want to have it not be a crime, but simply a civil infraction to cross the border, does that play into the general election audience?” he asked.

“Remember, this wasn’t intended for a general election audience.”

The first primary debate of the 2020 season saw cracks of daylight emerge in a Democratic field that has largely played to the progressive base, with the candidates clashing sharply over controversial policies like “Medicare-for-all” and calls to decriminalize illegal border crossings — while taking ample shots at President Trump in the process.

Staking out the left flank of the party on stage Wednesday night in Miami were Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. — the highest-polling candidate in the first debate batch, with Round 2 coming Thursday — and long-shot Bill de Blasio, the New York City mayor.

Castro was among those landing blows as he sought to distinguish himself from the field on the issue of immigration, perhaps gaining traction by targeting fellow Texan – former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas.

An NBC News op-ed Thursday morning declared President Trump the winner of the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle.

Author and reporter Jonathan Allen expressed surprise that Trump emerged “largely unscathed” as the field of 10 candidates mostly avoided direct attacks on him.

Allen said the Democrats seemed more focused on positioning themselves furthest to the left to win over primary voters, rather than appealing to the swing voters that decided the 2016 election.

“For long stretches, it seemed, they completely forgot about the man who has been at the center of pretty much every discussion among Democrats for the last two-plus years — the man they’re competing to take on next year. The obvious reason: The motivation to beat each other was, on this night, more urgent than defeating Trump — a life-or-death moment for some of their campaigns. Trump was the chief beneficiary of that dynamic,” Allen wrote.

Allen argued that by doing so, Democrats could allow Trump “to exploit their divisions and position himself for re-election” and “he was one step closer to that after Wednesday’s debate.”

The sentiment was shared by MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, who said it was “a missed opportunity” for Democrats to not go after frontrunner Joe Biden or President Trump. Another MSNBC commentator, Donny Deutsch declared confidently after the debate that none of the 10 candidates on the stage could defeat Trump next year, including Warren.

Meantime, New York Post columnist John Podhoretz saw things similarly, taking particular issue with the candidates’ far-left push on immigration. He said the candidates “spent far more time talking about how they would help illegal immigrants than about how they would help the voters they most need to win over” and that will benefit Trump.

“If I were Brad Parscale, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, I would be dancing a jig — because if this is the way the Democrats and the media want to discuss the economy and immigration, he is going to have a field day with the quotes they will generate from now until the election,” he wrote.

Beto O’Rourke said Thursday he’s “not running against anybody” when asked about the attacks by his rivals in the first Democratic presidential debate of the 2020 election cycle.

The former congressman admitted Thursday that he felt like a target on the debate stage, particularly after his Democratic opponent Julián Castro called him out over immigration.

“I feel like my responsibility on that stage is to describe and define what I want to do for this country, and the way in which I want to do it,” O’Rourke said during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I’m not running against anybody — I’m running for the United States of America. So I wanted to outline our vision, the means that would allow us to achieve it.”

“I’m not running against anybody — I’m running for the United States of America. So I wanted to outline our vision, the means that would allow us to achieve it.”

He was quizzed by the show hosts over why he didn’t use the platform to attack fellow Democrats and their policies, especially given that O’Rourke is trailing in polls.

While he refrained from slamming his opponents, other candidates didn’t share the same view and made repeated attacks against him.

In a segment about immigration, O’Rourke was pressed by Castro over whether he would support decriminalization of border crossings, an idea O’Rourke brushed off over concerns about prosecuting drug smugglers and human traffickers.

“I just think it’s a mistake, I think it’s a mistake, Beto, and I think if you truly want to change the system, then we got to repeal that section,” Castro fired back. “If not, it might as well be the same policy.”

O’Rourke defended himself by saying he would work to rewrite the country’s immigration laws in general, prompting a stark rebuke from Castro.

“That’s actually not true. … If you did your homework on this issue, you would know we should repeal [the law that criminalizes illegal border crossings],” Castro said.

Despite the criticism, O’Rourke gave himself an “A” rating for his performance on Thursday. “I was really happy with how I did. I got to lay out why I’m running for president,” O’Rourke said.

“My job is to explain that on that stage and … bring this country together around the means to actually get that done,” he added, also telling CNN that he did feel other candidates were targeting him specifically.

For his part, Castro told Fox News’ Shannon Bream after the debate that his policy for decriminalization isn’t as radical as people think.

“He clearly had not done his homework,” said Castro, dismissing O’Rourke’s concern about smugglers and drug traffickers by arguing that there are existing laws to deal with those issues.
