Adam Schiff: Mueller made it ‘very clear’ he didn’t want to testify but will ‘respect the subpoena’

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif, shed some light on the process of getting former Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before Congress, revealing Mueller made it “very clear” that he did not want to.

On Tuesday night, both Schiff and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-NY, confirmed that Mueller will be testify public before both committees on July 17 in response to a subpoena made by the Democratic lawmakers.

Appearing on MSNBC, Schiff dismissed the characterization that Mueller was given a “friendly subpoena.”

“I don’t think the Special Counsel’s office would characterize it as a friendly subpoena. He did not want to testify. He made that very clear,” Schiff told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. “Nonetheless, they will respect the subpoena. He will appear. He’ll be testifying before our committee in open session. Each of our members will have an opportunity to ask questions of the Special Counsel. And the American people get a chance to hear directly from him and have their questions answered. So I think it’s a good result. July 17th is the date we expect him to appear.”

Schiff also confirmed that there would be a closed-door session following the public testimony.

Laura Ingraham: Democrats running for president will soon ‘begin to smash each other’

Fox News host Laura Ingraham took a look at the Democrats’ top 2020 presidential candidates Tuesday night and reviewed some of the more debated promises and stumbles they’ve made ahead of this week’s scheduled debates in Florida.

Ingraham highlighted 2020 frontrunner Joe Biden, the former vice president and longtime U.S. senator from Delaware, and his recent racial controversy, his past comments on China and how his newfound wealth affects his image.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FIRST 2020 DEMOCRATIC DEBATE

“[Biden] has often spoke of being one of the poorest members of Congress,” Ingraham said on “The Ingraham Angle.” But he’s cashed in hugely since he was VP, charging up to $200,000 a speech and racking up lucrative book deals.”

The host also took on Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont for their campaign promises of free college, health care and day care.

“Although this may play well in the offices of MoveOn.org, whose members prefer Warren by 38 percent … average Americans are horrified particularly when they realize that they are going to get stuck with the giveaway bills,” Ingraham said.

Ingraham brought up South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who is currently facing a police shooting controversy that has sparked a racial divide in his city.

“If you can’t manage a kind of medium-sized police department, how will he possibly manage the entire executive branch?” Ingraham said.

According to Ingraham, Americans will soon begin to see the Democratic candidates take aim at each other as they seek to climb in the polls.

“In the coming days, the Dems, like it or not, their candidates are going to at least begin to smash each other. Maybe even savage each other in a desperate attempt to break from the pack,” Ingraham said.

The first Democratic primary debate is split, with events of 10 candidates each night scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday in Miami.

Chad Pergram: Media coverage of Mueller testimony will be ‘off the Richter scale’

Media coverage of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s upcoming testimony on Capitol Hill will “dwarf” that of past congressional hearings linked to the Russia investigation, Fox News’ Capitol Hill senior producer Chad Pergram predicted Tuesday.

“We’ve had some explosive hearings on Capitol Hill before,” Pergram said on “Hannity.” “You think of James Comey testifying, Jeff Sessions in the Senate a couple of years ago. You think about Michael Cohen in February. This will dwarf that. The pure magnitude of this will be off the Richter scale.”

Pergram also broke down the events that led to Mueller’s scheduled July 17 appearances before both the House judiciary and intelligence committees.

ROBERT MUELLER AGREES TO TESTIFY BEFORE HOUSE LAWMAKERS JULY 17 AFTER SUBPOENA, NADLER AND SCHIFF ANNOUNCE

“I’m told Bob Mueller would only appear if he was subpoenaed, and will stick to the ‘four corners’ of his report. That is what he said in a statement several weeks ago when they released the report. Of course, you can imagine Democrats wanting to get at him and see if there was distance between him and William Barr, the attorney general,” Pergram said, describing the subpoenas as “friendly.”

Pergram also predicted the probable line of questioning from House Republicans.

“They want to know the genesis of the Steele dossier, the [Lisa] Page and [Peter] Strzok text messages, one source said to me tonight, a Republican source. How many informants were on the campaign, and what were they looking at?” Pergram said.

Pergram also noted that if Mueller doesn’t adequately answer Republicans’ questions, they may say he is “not very credible.”

He also revealed the reasoning behind Nadler and Schiff arranging the testimony.

“They said “Americans have demanded to hear directly from the special counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined,” and that is why they want him to appear. That’s very key,” Pergram said.

Matt Gaetz: I hope Dems’ Mueller subpoena isn’t a precursor to ‘impeachment-by-surprise’

The subpoena of former Special Counsel Robert Mueller could be a warning of further congressional actions targeting President Trump, according to House Judiciary Committee member Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.

There was little advance notice that House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler would subpoena Mueller on Tuesday, Gaetz claimed that evening on “Fox News @ Night.”

The subpoena of Mueller — by both the judiciary and intelligence committees — appears to be a boon to those House Democrats who seek further maneuvers against President Trump, Gaetz said.

“It was a week ago in the Judiciary Committee, and I asked Jerry Nadler whether he intended to subpoena Robert Mueller and he said he would not answer at that time,” Gaetz said.

ROBERT MUELLER AGREES TO TESTIFY BEFORE HOUSE LAWMAKERS JULY 17 AFTER SUBPOENA, NADLER AND SCHIFF ANNOUNCE

“So I hope we are not in store for ‘impeachment-by-surprise,’ as this seems to feed into the elements of the Democratic Party that are more focused on President Trump — and sort of relitigating the Mueller report — than in dealing with the humanitarian crisis at the border or dealing with many of the other challenges that I think a lot of swing-district Democrats would like to be working on at this time.”

Gaetz then urged his fellow Republicans to demand crucial answers from Mueller.

“I think we have legitimate questions about how all these people ended up on the Mueller team that had a history of donating financially to Democrats and there did not seem to be sufficient balance,” he said.

“If you’ve got bad ingredients going into a gumbo, then you’re going to get a bad gumbo,” the lawmaker from Pensacola added.

Congressional Democrats have fought to get access to Mueller and his unredacted report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and whether President Trump obstructed justice. Weeks of negotiations between House Democrats and the Justice Department ultimately ended with Tuesday’s subpoenas.

Fox News has learned Mueller would appear only under a subpoena, which has been described as a “friendly” subpoena, one that in essence had been planned. Mueller is expected to stick to the “four corners” of his report.

Fox News’ Louis Casiano contributed to this report.

Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera predicted Democrats will pay a “price” after it was announced Tuesday that former Special Counsel Robert Mueller will testify before two House committees.

In doing so, Rivera compared Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., to aging high school athletes.

“We are going back down memory lane,” Rivera said on Fox News’ “Hannity.” “Nadler and Schiff remind me of high school athletes. They graduated from high school and now nobody recognizes them. They are offended that they are outside the mainstream of public consciousness now. Nobody knows who they are or what they are doing.”

“They have been forgotten, so they are desperately questing for attention, dragging back Robert Mueller.”

“Nadler and Schiff remind me of high school athletes. They graduated from high school and now nobody recognizes them. … They have been forgotten, so they are desperately questing for attention, dragging back Robert Mueller.”

— Geraldo Rivera, Fox News correspondent at large

Mueller has agreed to testify before the House judiciary and intelligence committees on July 17 after both panels subpoenaed the former special counsel Tuesday, according to Nadler and Schiff.

Rivera said that Mueller will add nothing new to the Russia investigation discussion.

“Robert Mueller has already told them, in no uncertain terms, that his testimony will stick exactly to the Mueller report,” Rivera said.

Rivera also told host Sean Hannity that Democrats will “rue the day” they allowed Nadler and Schiff to revive Mueller and the Mueller report, elevating him once again into the news cycle.

“I think that the price that this testimony will cost the Democrats will be grievous to them,” Rivera said. “They will rue the day that Nadler and Schiff let their ambition get ahead of their common sense, their political science, and drag this man back into center stage of the American public.”

Lindsey Graham: Mueller’s agreement to testify before Congress will ‘blow up’ in Democrats’ faces

Former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s agreement to testify before Congress, as many Democrats have urged, will “blow up in their face,” Sen. Lindsey Graham charged on Tuesday night.

Graham said in an appearance on “Hannity” that Mueller’s testimony won’t change from what was documented in his report on the Russia investigation.

“Bottom line is, after all of your looking and all the time you had and all the money you spent, did Trump collude with the Russians? No – Do you stand by your report? – Yes,” Graham said, envisioning questions the special counsel likely will be asked.

“It is ‘case-closed’ for me. They can do anything they want to in the House, and I think it will blow up in their face.

ROBERT MUELLER AGREES TO TESTIFY BEFORE HOUSE LAWMAKERS JULY 17 AFTER SUBPOENA, NADLER AND SCHIFF ANNOUNCE

“It will blow up in their face. This will blow up in their face. The conclusions can’t change, there is no collusion, that’s what the whole thing was about to begin with.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman added that the facts of the case will show President Trump did not restrict Mueller’s investigation.

“The president gave 1.4 million documents to Mueller. [Don] McGahn, his lawyer, testified for 30 hours,” he said.

“He made everybody available to Mueller that Mueller wanted to talk to, and he… answered questions in writing, so this president did nothing to stop Mueller from finding the truth.”

MARK MEADOWS: JOHN DURHAM WILL ‘GET TO THE BOTTOM OF’ RUSSIA INVESTIGATION ORIGINS

Graham said regardless of Mueller’s testimony, it would be hard to prosecute Trump for obstruction of justice.

“There’s nobody on Earth who could bring an obstruction case based on these facts,” he said.

Mueller has agreed to testify before the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees on July 17, according to the panels’ chairmen, Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., and Adam Schiff, D-Calif.

“Americans have demanded to hear directly from the Special Counsel so they can understand what he and his team examined, uncovered, and determined about Russia’s attack on our democracy, the Trump campaign’s acceptance and use of that help, and President Trump and his associates’ obstruction of the investigation into that attack,” Nadler and Schiff said in a joint statement.

Mueller did not immediately comment. In a news conference last month in which he delivered his first public remarks in more than two years, the special counsel said he did not wish to appear before lawmakers.

The all-star co-captain of the U.S. Women’s soccer team says she’s “not going to the f—ing White House” if her team wins the World Cup.

During an interview with Eight By Eight Magazine on Tuesday, Megan Rapinoe scoffed at a question about whether or not she’s “excited” about going to the White House, assuming her team wins the World Cup.

“I’m not going to the f—ing White House,” Rapinoe said. “No. I’m not going to the White House. We’re not going to be invited… I doubt it.”

TRUMP SAYS US SOCCER STAR MEGAN RAPINOE’S PROTEST DURING NATIONAL ANTHEM IS WRONG

Rapinoe had previously visited the White House in 2015 under President Obama. A report from the Washington Post suggested that the White House has mostly snubbed women’s teams, not inviting WNBA champions in the past two years or the NCAA women’s champions in 2018.

The comments came after President Trump on Monday said he does not think it is appropriate for Rapinoe to protest during the national anthem.

Rapinoe, who had initially knelt during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while she played in the National Women’s Soccer League, had vowed not to put her hand over her heart or sing the lyrics while the national anthem played. She has so far held true through the Women’s World Cup.

Trump made his comments on Rapinoe during an interview with The Hill. When he was asked about whether the co-captain’s decision to kneel is appropriate, Trump responded: “No. I don’t think so.”

President Trump’s latest critique of former Vice President Joe Biden shows he is the “MVP” in terms of trolling his rivals, according to Tom Shillue.

The president’s public questioning of Biden’s relationship with former President Barack Obama is the latest example of such, Shillue claimed Tuesday on “The Five.”

“President Trump is once again proving he is the MVP of trolling his competitors,” he said.

The Fox News Radio host pointed to an interview the president held with “The Hill,” in which he wondered if there was a “big secret” as to why Obama has not backed Biden.

TRUMP HAMMERS BIDEN, QUESTIONS IF ‘BIG SECRET’ IS BEHIND WHY OBAMA HASN’T ENDORSED HIS EX-VP

In the interview, Trump said the Delaware Democrat, “seemed to have gotten along” with the former president while the two were in the White House.

“How he doesn’t get President Obama to endorse him, there has to be some reason why he’s not endorsing him,” he said.

“And then he goes and lies and says I asked the president not to endorse me – give me a break – because he’s embarrassed by the fact that Obama is not endorsing him.

“So he goes out and says I asked President Obama not to endorse me.”

Shillue claimed Trump’s comments showed a keen sense of strategy.

“This is politically brilliant because he’s going at the big strength of Joe Biden – which is his association with Obama,” he said.

“He’s creating mystery. The big mystery is what it’s all about.”

Trump and Biden repeatedly have traded blows since the former vice president entered the 2020 race, with the president frequently dismissing his potential opponent as “sleepy”.

Trump even said he would prefer to run against Biden rather than face another campaign against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Claire McCaskill urges Warren not to be like annoying ‘professor’: Be more ‘relatable’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., is coming too close in her 2020 run to appearing like a professor and needs to relate to voters more effectively, former Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., suggested on Tuesday.

“You need to get American comfortable with who you are,” McCaskill said while appearing on MSNBC. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., were doing well in the polls because people knew who they were, McCaskill added.

The former Democratic senator argued Warren and other candidates should start using humor more and strike a balance between making people comfortable with your policy leadership without boring them with lectures.

“I think you have to swing with the fences with people being comfortable that you are in command of the policy but not so in command of the policy that you’re not relatable,” she said.

“That’s Elizabeth’s challenge, frankly, sometimes she comes very close to that professor I just wanted to be quiet.”

Warren has made a name for herself as the candidate with “a plan for that” — a reference to her many policy proposals for addressing issues like health care and the environment. The progressive hero has proposed sweeping economic reforms while pursuing a populist message — “economic patriotism” — that some have compared to President Trump’s “America First” vision.

At the end of 2018, Warren received criticism over her apparent attempt to connect with voters via Instagram. During the video, she popped open a beer and awkwardly embraced her husband.

But while she’s mostly trailed Sanders in the polls, some June polling showed her leading the 77-year-old Democratic socialist.

McCaskill, a perceived moderate, has pushed back on the growing presence of more progressive politicians in her party. When asked if there are “crazy” politicians in her party, she backed away from that label for Warren but noted her opposition to financial deregulation.

“I would not call my colleagues crazy, but Elizabeth Warren sure went after me when I advocated tooling back some of the regulations for small banks and credit unions,” she told Fox News.

She also hit back at criticism that she would have won re-election in 2018 if she had taken more progressive stances like endorsing single-payer health care. During an interview in 2018, she warned Democrats against looking down at people like herself who favored compromise instead of demanding purity.

“This demand for purity, this looking down your nose at people who want to compromise, is a recipe for disaster for the Democrats,” McCaskill previously said.
