Restaurant franchisee says Democrats’ $15 minimum wage would put him out of business

A restaurant franchisee made an impassioned argument Tuesday against the left’s push for a $15 minimum wage, saying it would force him to fire employees and could put him out of business.

Larry Fox, who owns a restaurant group that maintains Hooters locations in Florida and Alabama, wrote in a recent op-ed for the Wall Street Journal that he is “panicked” over Democratic lobbying for a higher minimum wage. He told “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday that his employees already make more than the minimum wage with tips – a policy called “tip credit.”

“A lot of my employees are young, they’re going to school and they use this as flexible work hours to earn up to 20, 25, 28 dollars an hour,” Fox said. “It gives them the ability to work and stay in school, but if I lose the tip credit that will increase my labor cost 100%.”

Fox said that his restaurants, like many others, are seasonal and don’t have a high profit margin. If a $15 minimum wage went into effect, he said there’d be no way to raise his prices to offset the cost.

Some states have already introduced the new minimum wage, including New Jersey, California, Massachusetts, Maryland and Illinois. A bill to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 is expected to advance in the House after the Fourth of July recess.

Fox, however, said there’s a bevy of problems for restaurateurs that come along with that.

“If we can still have a reduced tip credit, we use the tips to offset it, and our girls are making more than that now,” he said.

“The big problem is, you’ve got increased costs in the FICA insurance, unemployment insurance, our medical insurance, all of that continues to go up as well as wages,” he continued.

Trump says US soccer star Megan Rapinoe’s protest during national anthem is wrong

President Trump on Monday said he does not think it is appropriate for U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe to protest during the national anthem.

Rapinoe, who had initially knelt during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” while she played in the National Women’s Soccer League, had vowed not to put her hand over her heart or sing the lyrics while the national anthem played. She has so far held true through the Women’s World Cup.

Trump made his comments on Rapinoe during an interview with The Hill. When he was asked about whether the co-captain’s decision to kneel is appropriate, Trump responded: “No. I don’t think so.”

The president, however, did offer praise for the soccer team after their win over Spain Monday in the first round of the knockout stage of the Women’s World Cup.

“I love watching women’s soccer,” he told The Hill. “They’re really talented.”

Rapinoe told Yahoo Sports in May that her decision to kneel received a ton of backlash, expressing displeasure with U.S. Soccer’s lack of support and the federation’s decision to adopt a rule requiring players to “stand and honor the flag.”

US SOCCER STAR MEGAN RAPINOE STAYS TRUE TO HER WORD: DOESN’T SING NATIONAL ANTHEM BEFORE THAILAND MATCH

“Using this blanketed patriotism as a defense against what the protest actually is was pretty cowardly. I think the NFL does it,” she told Yahoo Sports. “I felt like the statement from U.S. Soccer, and then the rule they made without ever talking to me, that was the same as what the NFL was doing – just to not have the conversation, to try to just stop me from doing what I’m doing instead of at least having a conversation, and trying to figure out a [solution] that makes sense for everyone.”

Rapinoe called herself a “walking protest” and she believes the Trump administration doesn’t “value all Americans equally.”

“I feel like it’s kind of defiance in and of itself to just be who I am and wear the jersey, and represent it,” Rapinoe told the website. “Because I’m as talented as I am, I get to be here, you don’t get to tell me if I can be here or not. So it’s kind of a good ‘F you’ to any sort of inequality or bad sentiments that the administration might have towards people who don’t look exactly like him. Which, God help us if we all looked like him. Scary. Really scary. Ahh, disturbing.”

Rapinoe knelt during the national anthem before her match against the Chicago Red Stars in 2016. She called her actions a “little nod” to Kaepernick and “everything that he’s standing for right now.”

Liberal site rips Holocaust Museum for its ‘dreadful’ intervention in ‘concentration camps’ debate

A liberal news site is getting blowback on Monday over a piece denouncing the Holocaust Museum‘s “dreadful” involvement in the national debate over comparisons of U.S. border facilities to concentration camps.

Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-NY, created a firestorm when she claimed that the Trump administration was “running concentration camps” along the southern border. When critics slammed her for invoking a term associated with the Holocaust, Ocasio-Cortez stressed that she didn’t refer to “Nazi” death camps despite echoing the “never again” saying and calling the Trump presidency “fascist.” The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum released a statement “unequivocally rejecting” the analogy between the detention centers holding migrants and concentration camps.

Splinter News senior writer Rafi Schwartz wrote a piece the Holocaust Museum’s intervention into the debate “dreadful.”

HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS RESPOND TO AOC’S ‘CONCENTRATION CAMP’ REMARKS IN NEW VIDEO

“in its attempt to portray itself as eminently neutral and above the political discourse of the day, the Holocaust Museum has instead managed to wholly undercut its ostensible reason for existing: Educating the public about the horrors experienced by European Jewry and other marginalized communities in the hopes of preventing similar atrocities from taking place in the future,” Schwartz wrote. “But if, as the museum claims, ‘efforts to create analogies between the Holocaust and other events’ are to be unequivocally rejected, then what’s the point of learning about the Holocaust in the first place?”

Schwartz went on to accuse the Holocaust Museum of “willfully craven pearl-clutching” and called its “obstinance” “particularly troubling.”

“Why bother learning about the Holocaust at all, if the goal is simply to ossify its horrors as something that offers no contemporary roadmap for action?” Schwartz asked. “If the past isn’t prologue, but simply an antique to be analyzed from afar, then what do we need museums for at all?”

Splinter, a site is owned by Univision Communications, shared the article on social media where it was ratio’d, meaning it received more replies than likes and retweets. One critic accused the piece of “Holocaust splaining.”

Fox News host Laura Ingraham blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for “using children to get her way” in regards to illegal immigration.

“Note her typical emotional ploy, using children to get her way. Except when she wants their lives ended,” Ingraham said on “The Ingraham Angle” Monday in response to a clip of Pelosi taking credit for delaying President Trump’s ICE raids.

TRUMP DELAYS PLANNED ICE RAIDS TO SEE IF CONGRESS CAN SOLVE BORDER CRISIS

“When I spoke to the President, I said ‘Look, I’m a mom, I have five kids, seven, nine grandchildren and children are scared,'”Pelosi said Monday in New York.

“No one wants any child ever to be afraid, ever. It is tragic, and it really shouldn’t happen. And kids of American criminals, they suffer here too because of the mistakes of their parents. And parents coming illegally, again tragic but now comes the consequences for the whole family sometimes. Or at least there should be consequences if the rule of law means anything,” Ingraham told her audience.

The host criticized Pelosi for not taking care of American citizens first and use San Francisco as an example.

“Nancy doesn’t need to go far, does she, from San Francisco to see suffering and desperation. We have seen all those stories. Maybe she should focus on fixing that before throwing rocks,” Ingraham said.

Ingraham also blasted Democrats for remaining silent on the issue when former President Obama faced the same accusations.

“But where were the Democrats? Where were their outrage before Trump came into office?” Ingram said before playing a clip of Obama.

“Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they will get sent back, more importantly, they may not make it,” President Obama said in 2014 interview with ABC News.

Ingraham blasted the media, Democrats and Pelosi for misleading the public.

CNN’s Fareed Zakaria: ‘Thousands’ could die because of Trump’s sanctions on Iran

CNN host Fareed Zakaria warned President Trump on Monday night that “thousands” could potentially die due to the new sanctions his administration has placed on Iran.

Following the president’s last-minute decision last week to call off a military strike that he claimed would have killed about 150 people, the White House announced that Iran will face additional “hard-hitting” sanctions that will specifically target Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates.

TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER DELIVERING ‘HARD-HITTING’ SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN

Appearing on “CNN Tonight,” Zakaria struggled to answer whether President Trump did the right thing by calling off the strike because of the apparent dangers of the sanctions.

“The sanctions that are in place in Iran probably- I haven’t done the calculations, but I think it’s fair to say almost certainly will kill several hundred, maybe thousands of people over the next few months in terms of depriving people of medical supplies, food, nutrition,” Zakaria said. “And when you do a military strike, the people you are killing will tend to be Iranian soldiers, military officers who are volunteering to take park in Iran’s military struggle. The people you kill when you impose sanctions are the most vulnerable in society. These are the poorest people, the sickest people.”

He continued, “So if that’s his concern, he seems almost gleeful about the idea of imposing more and more sanctions on Iran. Has he thought about the human cost of this? I don’t think so.”

The CNN host went on to blast the “weird, impulse-driven policy” on Iran and questioned whether there were “any grownups in the White House” for naming the wrong ayatollah in their announcement of the new sanctions.

Mark Meadows: John Durham will ‘get to the bottom of’ Russia investigation origins

The federal prosecutor named by Attorney General William Barr to look into the origins of the Russia investigation will come to a substantive conclusion, according to Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C.

Connecticut federal prosecutor John Durham is looking closely at the intelligence community’s activity in late 2016 and early 2017, the House Freedom Caucus chairman claimed on “Hannity.”

“I can tell you that John Durham and Attorney General Barr are going to get to the bottom of it,” he said.

“They are including in part of their surveillance – really looking at the intelligence community to make sure that justice is brought.”

WHO IS JOHN DURHAM?

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who joined Meadows on “Hannity,” added he agreed with the North Carolina lawmaker and that a previous report by the Justice Department’s inspector general was fruitful.

“The attorney general of the United States and U.S. Attorney John Durham are doing an investigation,” he said. “They have told us this is broader than just the FBI – they’re going to look at all of this.

“First, Horowitz is going to come out. His report a year ago was very good,” Jordan said, referring to inspector general Michael E. Horowitz.

“Then we will see where Mr. Durham and Mr. Barr where their investigation and what they come back with.”

As part of its ongoing “multifaceted” and “broad” review into potential misconduct by U.S. intelligence agencies during the 2016 presidential campaign, the Justice Department revealed Monday it is also investigating the activities of several “non-governmental organizations and individuals.”

Additionally, the DOJ announced that the probe, led by Durham, was looking into the involvement of “foreign intelligence services.”

Former Trump aide George Papadopoulos told Fox News last month that an informant who was likely “CIA and affiliated with Turkish intel” had posed as a Cambridge University research assistant in September 2016 and tried to “seduce him” to obtain information linking the Trump team to Russia.

The information was contained in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., who had inquired as to the scope of Durham’s investigation.

The letter could indicate that the DOJ is looking closely at work done during the campaign by Fusion GPS, the firm retained by the Hillary Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee (DNC) to conduct opposition research against the Trump campaign.

Fox News’ Gregg Re contributed to this report.

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews has been one of the president’s most unhinged critics, but even he couldn’t resist praising Trump for refraining from a military strike on Iran, saying he’s “glad” he didn’t go through with it.

President Trump revealed last week that he called off the strike against Iran following them shooting down a U.S. drone roughly ten minutes before the strike was set to launch after he learned that roughly 150 Iranians would have been killed.

TRUMP SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER DELIVERING ‘HARD-HITTING’ SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN

“If Trump had taken military action, I would have come down hard on him,” Matthews told the panel Monday evening. “I think it’s good that he hesitated. I think hesitation before using military action and asking how many casualties there are going to be on the other side is a good question.”

The “Hardball” host invoked the lives lost during the Iraq War and how those that died “weren’t the bad guys.”

“The fact he found out it was 150 or so people — we went into Iraq, everybody said it was going to be quick and easy, it was going to be a slam dunk,” Matthews elaborated.

“We may have killed somewhere between 150,000 people and a million people, Iraqis, who were just there, they were just Iraqis, they weren’t the bad guys. We only make that calculation now. It’s time that — I like the fact that the president asked up front to his NSC people: how many people will die if we take this step? I think it’s good and I’m glad he did it.”

The Trump administration announced on Monday that the president approved “hard-hitting” sanctions on Iran, hoping to specifically target Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates.

President Trump made the right decision when he called off a retaliatory strike against Iran, according to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.

The president is proving himself to be a responsible leader by trying to prevent America from becoming mired in a new Middle East military conflict, the lawmaker claimed Monday on “The Story.”

“I’m really proud of President Trump for showing restraint,” Paul said. “It really takes a statesman to show restraint amidst a chorus of voices for war.”

UN SECURITY COUNCIL CONDEMNS ATTACKS ON OIL TANKERS, BUT NOT IRAN

However, Paul expressed caution regarding sanctions Trump imposed on Iran – which target Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“Whether the sanctions will work is another story,” the Kentucky lawmaker said. “From the Iranian perspective, they see the sanctions as an act of war.”

He added the Iran nuclear deal forged with the help of the Obama administration took away one key incentive for Iran to return to the negotiating table.

Paul said the delivery of hundreds of billions of dollars to Tehran was a “carrot” that left the Trump administration with only “sticks” after the U.S. withdrew from the deal.

“I didn’t agree that we gave up the money early,” he said.

“The problem is that’s already done. That was a carrot, but we gave up the carrot too easily. Now that it’s gone, we have no other carrots, all we have is a stick. We’re adding the stick – which is more sanctions… I would have built upon the nuclear deal to try to get a ballistic missile deal.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom D-Calif., said the GOP has shot itself in the foot on policy issues and will eventually devolve into a third party.

The Californian Democrat made the stunning claim during an interview with Axios that aired Sunday.

“I’m just hearing stuff that gins up a smaller and smaller base of people. And that’s my point… California in the 1990s is a lot like America in 2019, 2020, 2021. And here’s the real story — The Republican party was walked off a cliff,” Newsom said.

“They’re third-party status. It’s exactly what Donald Trump is doing and Mitch McConnell, who is completely complicit, is doing [to] the Republican party nationally. And they don’t even know what’s about to hit them.”

JIM BRESLO: FOR CALIFORNIA’S GOV. GAVIN NEWSOM, IGNORING THE LAW HAS BECOME A WINNING STRATEGY

Newsom was asked about his perceived disconnection with middle America and Trump voters at large and said he grew up in a red, rural district which helps him understand the heartland.

“I spent 50 years of my life in rural California in one of the reddest parts of the state, in Placer County. We grew up with these folks, have deep respect for people in rural community [sic]. Deep,” he said.

“I just don’t want them to be lied to. I actually care about them. I’m not using them as a pawn. They’re not being respected. They’re being lied to. They’re not connected to any movement. This guy — you think Trump cares about them? He’s a sole practitioner. You think they’re being protected?”

Newsom said he has empathy for the GOP because they don’t realize how far they’re going to fall, as a result of their own actions.

“I honestly am empathetic towards what they are about to experience, which is a profound demise because of their own making,” he said.

“And until you have some courageous Republicans that stand up and actually make an argument for conservatism… they are finished. They have no governing philosophy, they have no value system that’s interesting except fear of others. And those others are going to be a majority. So wake up.”

Newsom also said the current political climate has only bred fear and anxiety and accused Trump of selling voters a bill of goods.

“We’re actually ginning up more anxiety, more fear — which makes communities less safe,” he said.

FedEx CEO says shipping regulations creating ‘impossible burden’ for company: ‘We are expected to be the policeman’

FedEx’s lawsuit against the Trump administration stems from its inability to police hundreds of thousands of shipments for regulatory violations, according to its CEO.

It is nearly impossible for FedEx to exactly what technology is contained in its deliveries, and where it comes from, company chairman Fred Smith told Bret Baier Monday on “Special Report.”

“We contacted the Department of Commerce today and told them that the increasing use of restrictions on exports and imports by the Commerce Department in various geopolitical and trade disputes creates just an impossible burden on FedEx and common carriers,” he said.

“Because, under the Department of Commerce’s regulations, we are expected to be the policeman for these export and import controls – and there are about 1,100 entities now on this list and five were just added last Friday.

CHINA WANTS FEDEX TO EXPLAIN WHY HUAWEI PACKAGE WAS NOT SHIPPED TO US

“We’re required under the regulations of the department to certify that the shipper – who may or may not be telling the truth – is in compliance with those export regulations. Despite the fact that we handle 15 million shipments a day, if we make an error on any one of them… we can be fined $250,000 per piece.”

In a statement released earlier Monday, the company further explained its decision to sue.

“As a company that is committed to complying with all laws and regulations in the countries we serve, FedEx strongly supports the objectives of U.S. export control laws,” the statement read.

“FedEx is a transportation company, not a law enforcement agency.”

The lawsuit comes after Chinese tech firm Huawei demanded clarification from FedEx after it apologized for failing to ship a branded device destined for the United States.

China’s foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said the shipping company should offer an explanation after FedEx released a statement saying an “operational error” was to blame for the package not being shipped to the U.S., Reuters reported.

On Friday, PCMag said FedEx refused to ship a package that reportedly contained a Huawei phone. The parcel, which was shipped from Great Britain and bound for the U.S., was ultimately returned after spending about five hours in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Smith reacted to the situation in his interview with Baier.

FEDEX WORKER GOES VIRAL FOR STOP SHE DIDN’T HAVE TO MAKE

“Huawei is just emblematic of this problem,” Smith claimed.

The Huawei incident concern two packages – two out of 15 million – where a 30-year employee – a great FedEx team member – made an error and diverted two packages for a compliance audit. We found out about it. We returned them to the customer. We apologized.

“There was third one in the U.K., where a relatively new teammate – because the box said Huawei on it – misinterpreted the regulations and didn’t accept the package.”

Smith said the issue was emblematic of the “confusing situations” that can arise from the rare shipment that, “becomes an international cause celebre.”
