Ex-Obama adviser Rhodes: Iran debacle ‘predictable,’ ‘everything’s gotten worse’ under Trump

Westlake Legal Group Ben-Rhodes_reuters_660 Ex-Obama adviser Rhodes: Iran debacle 'predictable,' 'everything's gotten worse' under Trump Sam Dorman fox-news/world/conflicts/iran fox-news/politics/foreign-policy fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/person/barack-obama fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/politics fnc article 0fdad8e1-9c52-58a7-b805-654236208086

Former Obama adviser Ben Rhodes blamed President Trump for the continually escalating tensions with Iran and said it was “eminently predictable” that certain events would occur after Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal.

Rhodes, one of the chief architects of Obama’s Iran nuclear deal, took aim at Trump’s handling of the country in a recent interview.

“Everything’s gotten worse… Trump has made the nuclear threat worse and he’s made the risk of war worse and this was eminently predictable,” Rhodes said on Wednesday’s “Pod Save the World.”

“This is what all of us said was going to happen when he pulled out of the nuclear deal,” Rhodes added.

GEN. KEANE: LIKELIHOOD OF LARGE-SCALE MILITARY OPERATION IN IRAN IS ‘PRETTY REMOTE’

Rhodes, who served as Deputy National Security Adviser, advocated for the nuclear deal which halted U.S. sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. During the podcast, he told former colleague and White House aide Tommy Vietor that the Trump administration brought the U.S. to a diplomatic situation they both feared would occur.

“We’re on this escalation cycle that we’ve been worried about,” he said, claiming that the U.S. engaged in multiple provocations against the Iranian regime.

Their comments came as the U.S. blamed Iran for an attack on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, as well as shooting down a military drone in the Strait of Hormuz. Rhodes seemed unsure of whether Iran was to blame but argued that the Trump administration faced an uphill battle in pinning the attack on the regime.

“It matters that this administration has no credibility,” he said before accusing the administration of lying about “everything” — including Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal before the U.S.’s withdrawal.

REBECCA GRANT: IRAN SHOOTS DOWN US DRONE AND PUSHES FOR WAR. HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT NEXT

He went on to argue that although Trump said he would outperform Obama on issues surrounding North Korea and Iran, he was doing worse on both.

Former Vice President Joe Bide also criticized Trump, saying that the drone attack was a “self-inflicted disaster.” “Trump promised that abandoning the deal and imposing sanctions would stop Iran’s aggression in the region. But they’ve only gotten more aggressive,” he said.

Trump’s official “War Room” Twitter account responded to Biden on Thursday, tweeting: “Iran shoots down an American drone in international airspace, and Joe Biden’s response is to attack President Trump? What is his solution? Send Iran more pallets of cash? Let Iran take more U.S. sailors hostage? More coddling?”

Recent remarks by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., comparing U.S. detention facilities for migrants to “concentration camps” are hurting the agents who care for the children at the border, the acting ICE director claimed.

Agents for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement often donate from their own homes to provide food, toys and other comforts to the children of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers being held at the border, Mark Morgan told host Laura Ingraham on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle” on Wednesday night.

LESLIE MARSHALL: AOC AND TRUMP SHOULD BOTH TONE DOWN FIERY IMMIGRATION RHETORIC

“The hardworking men and women of the Border Patrol and ICE are working every day to safeguard this country,” he said. “And, what is this kind of rhetoric doing? It’s demoralizing them.”

Morgan, who also served in the Obama administration, said he has observed agents taking time to engage with the children and make them feel comfortable.

“I was there 2014, 2016, and I’m here now,” he said. “I’ve watched it, I’ve been there, as well.

“I saw Border Patrol agents — they care for these kids as if they were their own, bringing in soccer balls to play soccer with them — and this kind of rhetoric, it is irresponsible, reckless, and it’s flat-out wrong.”

“We want to get the kids out of those facilities because we are overcrowded and get them to better conditions. We’ve been asking for $4.5 million to make that happen. If Congress wants to fix this, pass that [legislative] supplement.”

On Monday, Ocasio-Cortez — whose district includes parts of the Bronx and Queens in New York City — told her Instagram followers the U.S. government is “running concentration camps on our southern border.”

“That is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps,” Ocasio-Cortez said during a live-stream that was viewed by Fox News.

Fox News’ Sean Hannity unloaded on the mainstream media Wednesday night for their coverage of President Trump’s Florida campaign rally warning them that they are underestimating the concerns of the president’s supporters.

“The Americans who showed up last night in flip-flops and cargo shorts, they will be the people who choose the next president, they are the ones who were right in 2016 and all of you were wrong,” Hannity said.

He was reacting to a montage of media clips from CNN and MSNBC that showed hosts and their guests mocking those who attended the Orlando rally.

CNN PUNDIT WONDERS IF NEWS ORGS WOULD PUSH IMPEACHMENT TO BOOST RATINGS; EXPERTS SAY SOME HAVE ALREADY TRIED

Hannity accused the media of ignoring the impact of the Obama administration’s policies and noted that the president’s supporters did not “buy into” the Russia investigation.

“The forgotten men and women in this country, the one that suffered the most under Biden-Obama, the people who make this country great every day. They didn’t buy into your lies, your conspiracy theories,” Hannity said.

Hannity also blasted CNN’s Don Lemon for comparing Trump and Adolf Hitler Tuesday night while arguing that such “bad people” shouldn’t be given a platform.

“You let your ‘journalist’ Don Lemon say this on your network last night? You should be ashamed of yourself,” Hannity told CNN boss Jeff Zucker.

The Fox News’ host accused CNN of being unable to take the criticism responding to Lemon’s comments.

“What really happened was this. When the president was 6 minutes into the speech last night, said all of those fake news people in the back and the crowd started… telling the truth about fake news CNN, that CNN sucks, CNN couldn’t take the criticism and they turned it off,” Hannity said.

Alan Dershowitz: Trump ‘perfectly entitled to invoke executive privilege’

Westlake Legal Group Ingraham-Dershowitz_FOX Alan Dershowitz: Trump 'perfectly entitled to invoke executive privilege' fox-news/topic/fox-news-flash fox-news/shows/ingraham-angle fox-news/politics/house-of-representatives/democrats fox-news/politics/executive/white-house fox-news/politics/executive fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/entertainment/media fox news fnc/politics fnc Charles Creitz article 588dd48d-17b9-513a-b8a6-8a9f957819c4

President Trump is within his rights to invoke executive privilege, including when it comes to former White House communications director Hope Hicks, according to Alan Dershowitz.

Congressional lawmakers often claim presidents are not “above the law” in many of these cases, but Congress itself is also not “above the law,” Dershowitz told host Laura Ingraham on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

“Each branch of the government has a form of executive privilege,” Dershowitz said Wednesday night. “The president is perfectly entitled to invoke executive privilege. If they think it goes too far … let the courts decide.

“The president is perfectly entitled to invoke executive privilege. If they think it goes too far … let the courts decide.”

— Alan Dershowitz

HOPE HICKS QUESTIONED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS ON CAPITOL HILL, AS POLS BICKER OVER INTERVIEW

“As far as the current issue is concerned, all three branches of government have privilege,” he continued. “You can’t call a law clerk at the Supreme Court and ask the law clerk, ‘What did you discuss with the justice?’ Imagine if they tried to call legislative assistants of senators or congressmen, the same congressmen who are demanding that [Hicks] speak would be up in arms.”

Dershowitz claimed there is a risk of weakening privilege power throughout the three branches of government in cases where such powers are challenged.

“The danger is you can diminish executive privilege and legislative privilege and judicial privilege, not only for this administration but for future administrations,” he said.

“That would have a big structural impact on government and on civil liberties.”

Hicks was questioned behind closed doors Wednesday by members of the House Judiciary Committee as part of the panel’s review of obstruction allegations and Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s report on the Russia investigation.

Some Democrats complained that Hicks – who is now the chief communications officer at Fox Corp. – was ordered by the White House to stay quiet about her time as an aide to Trump.

“She’s objecting to stuff that’s already in the public record,” Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., said. “It’s pretty ridiculous.”

Earlier Wednesday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., declined to comment on the substance of the interview: “All I’ll say is Ms. Hicks is answering questions put to her and the interview continues.”

In a letter Tuesday to Nadler, White House Counsel Pat Cipollone wrote that Trump had directed Hicks not to answer questions “relating to the time of her service as a senior adviser to the president.”

Cipollone said Hicks was “absolutely immune” from compelled testimony with respect to her service to the president because of the separation of powers between the executive and legislative branches. The White House similarly has cited broad executive privilege with respect to many of the Democrats’ investigative demands, using the president’s power to withhold information to protect the confidentiality of the Oval Office decision-making process.

Fox News’ Andrew O’Reilly contributed to this report.

Jesse Watters: Comparing Parkland shooting victim dropped by Harvard to shooter is ‘irresponsible’

Fox News’ Jesse Watters criticized a critic of Parkland shooting survivor Kyle Kashuv who compared the student to the very shooter who killed his classmates. But he defended Harvard’s choice to drop Kashuv, saying the young man must “face the consequences.”

“You don’t kick a kid like that when he’s down. He is an adult and it’s irresponsible for him to smear him that way,” Watters said Wednesday on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” calling MSNBC contributor David Jolly “a joke.”

FLASHBACK: PARKLAND SHOOTING SURVIVOR KYLE KASHUV EMERGES AS CONSERVATIVE ROLE MODEL, SECOND AMENDMENT CHAMPION

Jolly on Tuesday said that social media messages written by Kashuv sounded like ones of a mass shooter, while the teen “deserves a closer look” as to whether the pro-Second Amendment advocate should be able to purchase a firearm.

Kashuv said Monday on Twitter that Harvard rescinded his admission after the recent resurfacing of racist and offensive remarks he described as “offensive,” “idiotic” and “inflammatory.”

The student said he made the comments before the mass shooting — which he says made him a different person, and he apologized Monday in an interview with Fox News’ Ed Henry.

Watters backed Harvard’s choice not to admit the teen, and said accepting Kashuv does “no good” for the university.

“Harvard can do what it wants. It has no obligation to accept this kid, you can rescind it for any reason,” Watters said.  “He’s a high-profile young man, obviously a very bright man, but I don’t think it does Harvard any good to bring someone who has that inflammatory profile into the community.

“Sometimes life is about facing the consequences for what you do, and I’m sure he will be successful later in life,” Watters added.

President Trump offers a challenge to the media because the collective political bent of his platforms is “right down the middle,” according to Greg Gutfeld.

Trump’s penchant for drawing crowds was on display Tuesday at his Orlando re-election campaign kickoff, Gutfeld added Wednesday on “The Five.”

“The Democrats have a big challenge here because there are so many of them. He just makes them seem so small by his outsized personality,” he said.

HILLARY CLINTON AGAIN TAKES AIM AT TRUMP AFTER PRESIDENT’S 2020 CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

“The unspoken truth when you go through the achievements – I wish the media would understand – is that Trump is a centrist.”

The “Greg Gutfeld Show” host listed several of Trump’s platforms, claiming they don’t add up to anything right-wing or simplistic.

“Strong military – center right. Prison reform – center left. Cut taxes – center right. Trade wars – center left. Rejection of military actions – Libertarian. Pro-free speech – Libertarian. ‘Don’t burn the flag’ – center right.”

“Conclusion: He is right down the middle,” Gutfeld claimed. “That confounds the media because they don’t know how to handle that – he is exactly what America wants.”

Gutfeld criticized MSNBC host Joe Scarborough and others who he claimed are “reacting emotionally” when critiquing Trump and his campaign event.

“You have responses from ‘Morning Joe’ calling him ‘fat Elvis’ and they are trying to read Trump’s mind,” he said.

Sunny Hostin says Lindsey Graham ‘sold his soul’ in his support of President Trump

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin ripped Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Wednesday, suggesting that he sacrificed his dignity by supporting President Donald Trump.

“Lindsey has sold his soul,” Hostin said. She and the other daytime co-hosts were discussing how Graham and Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., both spoke in favor of Trump at his re-election rally on Tuesday in Florida.

“This is what happens,” co-host Meghan McCain said. You have to show up at the rally and you have to kiss the ring and you’ll be great politically in the Republican Party — and it was just a weird thing for me to watch,” she added before describing Graham as someone she saw as an “uncle.”

McCain commented that, to her, the appearance by Graham, a longtime ally of her late father Sen. John McCain, seemed to signify that the “transformation” was “complete.” It’s unclear what exactly she meant, but she seemed to refer to the way Republicans acted under Trump — a frequent topic on “The View.”

Graham, who previously criticized the president, raised eyebrows during Trump’s first term when he started voicing support for the president. He also caught special attention at the end of 2018 when he tore into Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats over their treatment of then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., suggested in February that Graham “lost his mind” and no longer was “the man I served shoulder to shoulder with.” “I don’t even understand what has happened,” she said while appearing on MSNBC.

Rubio, who similarly criticized Trump in 2016, also reportedly caught criticism for supporting the president’s reelection bid.

Chris Matthews heaps praise on Biden, says he was the ‘Irish guy hanging around with the African-American president’

It’s safe to say Chris Matthews isn’t going to vote for President Trump next year, but the MSNBC host may have revealed who he will throw his support behind.

During an interview Tuesday night, Matthews backed former Vice President Joe Biden, painting him as an everyman and man of the people.

“[Biden’s] the most normal guy. He’s like on Amtrak, anybody who takes the Acela here on the east coast knows everybody who works that night train knows him personally,” Matthews told Stephen Colbert.

“You go up to the woman who sells the coffee and she says, ‘Oh yeah, he’s always getting his picture taken with my mother.’ That’s Biden. He’s very likable.”

JOE LIEBERMAN PRAISES TRUMP’S CHINA STRATEGY, SAYS BIDEN FLIP-FLOPS

Colbert said voters are responding to Biden out of a need for nostalgia, prompting Matthews to compare Biden to Johnny Carlson’s former side-kick, Ed McMahon. He also said Biden was the Irish foil to Obama’s African American ancestry.

“But you know, he was sort of Ed Mcmahon to Barack Obama for eight years,” Matthews replied. “He was a regular guy. He put the ‘O’ in Obama. He was like the Irish guy hanging around with the African-American president, and they worked together as a team, and I think everybody, American American and white voters all remember that very nice relationship”

“And I think they felt good about it. And I think they want something like that again. They feel good about it,” he added.

Matthews also claimed voters are embarrassed to admit their support for Trump and blamed their coy nature for the polling industry’s inaccurate data.

BIDEN TOPS TRUMP BY DOUBLE DIGITS IN NEW PENNSYLVANIA POLL

“People don’t like saying they like him. They’re embarrassed. And it’s more embarrassing now because of the racism, the terrible stuff he says. Nobody wants to say, ‘Yeah, I’m with that,'” he said earlier in the interview.

The Colbert appearance came after Matthews said Monday that Democrats turned their back on Middle America, particularly the working class and pro-life Americans.

“I think they knew there’s a great party going on among the liberal elite with all their Hollywood buddies — and they weren’t invited. Nobody wants to go to a party they haven’t been invited [to] … And that’s the attitude people have” Matthews said. “They’ve been looked down on.”

Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich pointed out Wednesday that President Trump’s re-election campaign is far different in terms of organization than his first presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign operation raised a whopping $24.8 million in less than 24 hours amid his 2020 re-election launch in Florida on Tuesday — a figure that blows past what any of the Democratic candidates raised in the entire first quarter.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel tweeted early Wednesday about the fundraising haul, with President Trump tweeting  “THANK YOU!” in response.

Going into Trump’s rally on Tuesday, the re-election campaign had $40.8 million in cash-on-hand at the start of second-quarter fundraising on April 1. Combined with the RNC’s joint fundraising committees, they have a combined $82 million cash-on-hand for the second quarter.

Responding on “Outnumbered,” Pavlich noted the enthusiasm in Florida for Trump’s election kick-off event, with 100,000 people requesting tickets to attend.

“This is different this time in terms of the apparatus the president has for his campaign,” she said, adding the campaign and the RNC have held 250 events to train more than 400,000 volunteers.

Democrat Capri Cafaro agreed that the “ground game is important” and Trump will enjoy the “value of incumbency.”

“Donald Trump does have some things he can point to as victories and as accomplishments. He’s not just candidate Trump, he’s President Trump,” said Cafaro.

However, a new Fox News Poll suggests a cause for concern for the president’s re-election chances.

The poll found former Vice President Joe Biden holding a sizable lead on the Democratic field, with a 10-point lead on Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.

The brother of a New Jersey man who was found dead last week in his resort hotel room in the Dominican Republic spoke out Wednesday on “Fox & Friends”, cautioning Americans to reconsider their vacation plans in the Caribbean nation.

The State Department confirmed Joseph Allen’s death to Fox News Tuesday after the 55-year-old was found unresponsive on his hotel room floor last week.

Allen, a native of Avenel in southern New Jersey, had reportedly complained about being hot at a pool and left to take a shower; he went to bed early and was found dead the next day.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC RESORT DEATHS MYSTERY: TIMELINE

Jason Allen said his brother was not concerned about the recent deaths or the shooting of David Ortiz before he left for the Terra Linda Resort with a group of friends.

Allen said he does not trust the Dominican authorities to provide the answers about how his brother died. He said an autopsy was performed Friday, but no “official report” has been provided to the family.

“We were told the body needed to be embalmed before my brother was transported back to the United States,” he said.

Jason Allen said that Joseph’s 23-year-old son was on his way to the Dominican Republic to spend Father’s Day with his dad when he learned what happened. He said he does not believe anyone would have targeted his brother and said his brother never drank from the hotel room minibar.

Co-host Steve Doocy asked Allen whether he would advise people to vacation in the country given the unexplained deaths.

“Hold your horses… Something is off there and I think it needs to at the very least be looked into,” he responded.

The popular Caribbean vacation destination has been grappling with a rash of deaths of U.S. tourists at various resorts. Families of the tourists said they were generally in good health.

In nearly all the recent deaths in the Dominican Republic, officials said there were signs of pulmonary edema — a condition in which the lungs fill with fluid. The tourists ranged in age from 41 to 67.

The Dominican Ministry of Tourism has denounced what it has called an overreaction, characterizing the deaths as coincidental.
