Dershowitz gives media an ‘F,’ says CNN chose Avenatti over him

Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz said Sunday that CNN kept him off the network due to his analysis of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, and claimed that the channel once booted him from appearing on air in favor of troubled lawyer Michael Avenatti.

Dershowitz made the claims during an interview with Howard Kurtz on Fox News’ “Media Buzz,” saying that he knew “for a fact” that CNN President Jeff Zucker nixed his appearances because of Dershowitz’s views on the Russia investigation.

“CNN, which used to have me on all the time, on Anderson Cooper, on Cuomo, on Lemon, as an analyst, as a centrist analyst, they decided no, no, it is okay to have extreme Trump supporters, because people just use them as a stick figure exhibits,” Dershowitz said. “What they didn’t want was a centrist liberal that went against their narrative.”

ALAN DERSHOWITZ: A PROSECUTOR’S JOB IS TO MAKE DECISIONS, MUELLER DIDN’T FINISH THE JOB

“Walter Cronkite could not get a job in the media today.”

— Alan Dershowitz

CNN did not immediately respond to Fox News’ requests for comment.

Dershowitz added that if he were to grade the media on their coverage of the Mueller probe, he’d give them an “F.”

“Even with grade inflation, I just think the media comes off awful, terrible, for the most part. I think we are seeing an elimination of the distinction between the editorial page and the news pages in some of the leading media in the country, and that’s a shame. Walter Cronkite could not get a job in the media today,” he added.

In regards to Zucker’s alleged order, Dershowitz said: “I asked [Zucker] how come I am not on anymore, and he said, oh, no, no, no, you will be on, but since the summer I’ve never been on a single time. I have been on all of the other networks repeatedly. But clearly, they made a decision. They did not want my kind of analysis.”

What appeared to really rile up the Harvard Law professor was that CNN chose frequently to use Avenatti – over Dershowitz – for its analysis of the Mueller investigation.

“They had a choice of a Harvard law professor for 50 years who has been getting it right, a centrist liberal and who has credibility, or Michael Avenatti,” Dershowitz said. “And they picked Michael Avenatti.”

He added: “He became their go-to guy. Every one of his predictions turned out to be false.”

Avenatti, who previously represented adult-film star Stormy Daniels in her feud with President Trump, recently has become embroiled in a series of legal quagmires of his own.

Earlier this month, he was hit with a 36-count indictment that accused him stealing millions of dollars from clients, cheating on his taxes, lying to investigators and trying to hide money from debtors in bankruptcy proceedings.

Avenatti denied the charges on Twitter, saying he had made powerful enemies and would plead not guilty and fight the case. “I look forward to the entire truth being known as opposed to a one-sided version meant to sideline me,” he tweeted.

The new charges did not include a New York extortion case alleging Avenatti demanded millions to stay quiet about claims he planned to reveal about Nike paying high school players.

Avenatti, 48, was arrested March 25 in New York on the Nike charge. Federal prosecutors at the time announced he also faced single counts of wire and bank fraud in Southern California, where he lives and practices law.

Fox News’ Howard Kurtz and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

President Trump, reiterating his firm belief that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation had been a political and unsuccessful witch hunt, tweeted out the New York Post’s front page and its bold, declarative  headline: “TRUMP CLEAN.”

The page showed Trump smiling alongside the phrases, “No crimes committed,” and “Dem hoax destroyed.”

The tweet was something of a victory lap for Trump, after Mueller’s report said there wasn’t enough evidence to charge him with either conspiracy or obstruction of justice.

Despite what Trump’s tweets may have implied, the battle was far from over, however, as congressional Democrats continued to push their own follow-up investigation. House Judiciary Committee chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., subpoenaed the unredacted Mueller report and requested that Mueller testify before Congress.

CONTROVERSIAL STEELE DOSSIER BACK IN SPOTLIGHT AFTER MUELLER REPORT’S RELEASE

Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., who also serves on the Judiciary Committee, spoke of concerns about Russian election meddling and collusion. He said that even though Mueller’s report didn’t show collusion “beyond a reasonable doubt,” it contained enough suspicious information to raise red flags.

“There was certainly evidence of collusion, not evidence that met the beyond a reasonable doubt standard,” he said.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., called for impeachment proceedings in the aftermath of the Mueller report’s release, and pushed back on concerns that the issue might hurt Democrats’ 2020 prospects.

“I know people say this is politically charged and we shouldn’t go there, and that there is an election coming up, but there are some things that are bigger than politics,” she said.

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., also pushed a resolution calling on the House Judiciary Committee to investigate whether Trump committed impeachable offenses.

MUELLER REPORT IGNITES NEW DEM BATTLE OVER IMPEACHMENT

Those reactions aside, though, Trump was exuberant, according to his adviser Dan Scavino.

While the president touted the Post’s front page, it also had its share of critics who felt it was an astounding example of overreach.

The release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe report has some journalists in apology mode, saying they paid too little attention to Mitt Romney’s 2012 observations about the Kremlin’s threat to U.S. interests.

Back in 2012, Senator Romney. R-Utah, was running for president. And he tagged Russia as the United States’ greatest geopolitical foe.

Back then, Romney “was broadly mocked” over that position, New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman tweeted on Friday. “I was among reporters who should have given it more weight.”

New Yorker reporter Ronan Farrow also joined in. So did Washington Examiner correspondent David M. Drucker, who said he wanted to “reset” his 2017 op-ed titled, “Romney was right about Russia.”

ERIC SWALWELL: NO APOLOGY NECESSARY FOR SURVEILLING TRUMP CAMPAIGN

People on Twitter panned journalists for issuing those statements, suggesting they were disingenuous.

Their comments came as Romney caught heat for criticizing the president over claims made in the special counsel’s report. “I am sickened at the extent and pervasiveness of dishonesty and misdirection by individuals in the highest office of the land, including the President,” he said in a statement tweeted Friday.

Both Democrats and Republicans have seized on the report and what its findings meant for American democracy. While the administration celebrated the fact that no one helped Russia meddle in the 2016 election, Democrats have emphasized the extent to which Russian interference did occur.

Fox News contributor Donna Brazile called the report a “wake-up call.” “We had a foreign power, another government that was interfering in our election,” said Brazile, who served as interim chairwoman for the Democratic National Committee in 2016.

Onetime GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee clashed by tweet with CNN’s April Ryan after she criticized his daughter, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on the heels of the Mueller report’s release.

The controversy arose after Ryan called for Sanders’ firing in light of the Special Counsel’s claim, in his report on alleged Russian election meddling, that she’d misled the press. “The American people can’t trust her,” Ryan said. “She should be let go and she should be fired […] When there is a lack of credibilty there you have to start and start lopping the heads off,” she told CNN.

Huckabee appeared to take issue with Ryan’s phrasing and, on Friday, called on the White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) to revoke Ryan’s press credentials.

“Will the ⁦@whca⁩ revoke April Ryan’s credentials? If not, they are gutless tools,” he said, using the WHCA’s Twitter handle. In another tweet, he said Ryan’s words constituted an “incitement to murder.”

Ryan deployed some tweets of her own in response, assailing Huckabee’s faith and accusing him of hypocrisy.

Ryan pointed to a joke Huckabee made when he was discussing a spat Ryan and his daughter had over Thanksgiving pie.

“Stuart, don’t ever and I mean don’t ever mess with a Southern woman and her homemade pies,” he told Fox Business host Stuart Varney. “It is as dangerous as when you hear a Southern woman begin her sentence with ‘bless your heart.’ It means you’re about to be gutted like a deer, you just don’t know it.”

Ryan seemed to imply that comment carried a “veiled threat.” “You call yourself a man of God? Boy bye!” she tweeted at Huckabee.

Independent Women’s Voice President Tammy Bruce and former CNN contributor Jeffrey Lord called the mainstream media “obsessed” with President Trump and compared them to drug addicts avoiding rehab Friday while appearing on the “Ingraham Angle” to discuss the aftermath of the Mueller report release.

“At this point, with the clips you showed, it’s turned into fan fiction. … It’s almost as if they know it’s absolutely impossible. But they can’t let it go. It’s like that show, ‘Intervention,’ where the person starts to run across the parking lot because they don’t want to get into the van to go to the airport to go to the rehab center,” Bruce said.

TRUMP CAMPAIGN GOES ON POST-MUELLER OFFENSIVE

“They’ve completely lost any sense of normalcy of any kind of sense of reality. They know it. They don’t care. They just think, well, maybe this is going to be click bait and maybe some of our audience will come back.”

Ingraham played both Bruce and Lord a montage of CNN hosts and pundits talking about how the Mueller report release and results were a win for Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

TRUMP WORRIED MUELLER APPOINTMENT WOULD DISTRACT FROM HIS PRESIDENCY: ‘THIS IS THE END. I’M F—ED’

“Let’s be clear this report is a gift to the government of Russia,” one CNN commentator said in the montage.

The Mueller report was released Thursday and showed investigators did not find evidence of collusion between the 2016 Trump presidential campaign and Russian operatives.

Lord said he believes the media is “obsessed” with President Trump and disappointed the report didn’t find evidence of collusion. He also said he believes the investigation into how the Russia investigation began will deliver the “real truth.”

“They’re about to get the real truth with all of these deep-state people in the FBI and the Department of Justice who were colluding with members of the media to trap Donald Trump, to frame Donald Trump. And they were obsessed about it. They’re still obsessed about it,” Lord said.

“They’re so disappointed they didn’t get him and they’re going to try again. The only one they’re going to get is themselves.”

New York Times opinion columnis Paul Krugman– who once called Sen. Bernie Sanders‘ economic policies “destructive self-indulgence”– is now praising the leading 2020 candidate for “civic virtue” because he’s advocating his policies despite his riches.

Krugman, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, offered a defense of Sanders on Thursday following the revelations that the senator became part of America’s one percent, thanks to his 2016 presidential campaign that propelled him to national stardom and wealth.

BERNIE SANDERS RELEASES 10 YEARS OF TAX RETURNS; DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST MADE OVER $560G IN 2018

“A peculiar chapter in the 2020 presidential race ended Monday, when Bernie Sanders, after months of foot-dragging, finally released his tax returns,” Krugman wrote, calling the filings “perfectly innocuous.”

He said that while it seems that “Sanders got a lot of book royalties after the 2016 campaign, and was afraid that revealing this fact would produce headlines mocking him for now being part of the 1 Percent,” he shouldn’t actually hide his wealth.

“Politicians who support policies that would raise their own taxes and strengthen a social safety net they’re unlikely to need aren’t being hypocrites; if anything, they’re demonstrating their civic virtue,” Krugman wrote, calling such attacks “stupid.”

The senator’s 2018 tax return revealed that he and his wife, Jane, earned over $550,000, including $133,000 in income from his Senate salary and $391,000 in sales of his book, “Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In.”

The filings showed that Sanders has been among the top 1 percent of earners in the U.S. According to the liberal-leaning Economic Policy Institute, families in the U.S. earning $421,926 or more a year are part of this group.

NY TIMES’ PAUL KRUGMAN SAYS US PART OF ‘NEW AXIS OF EVIL’ WITH RUSSIA, SAUDI ARABIA

Krugman’s rare defense of Sanders comes after his relentless attacks on the Sanders campaign during the 2016 election.

In a January 2016 column, Krugman decried Sanders’ idealism, saying “it’s not a virtue unless it goes along with hardheaded realism,” which Sanders doesn’t have.

“Sorry, but there’s nothing noble about seeing your values defeated because you preferred happy dreams to hard thinking about means and ends. Don’t let idealism veer into destructive self-indulgence,” he wrote.

“Sorry, but there’s nothing noble about seeing your values defeated because you preferred happy dreams to hard thinking about means and ends. Don’t let idealism veer into destructive self-indulgence.”

— Paul Krugman on Bernie Sanders in 2016

In a blog post the same month, Krugman also declared Sanders’ positions on financial reform and healthcare were “disturbing.”

“And in both cases his positioning is disturbing — not just because it’s politically unrealistic to imagine that we can get the kind of radical overhaul he’s proposing, but also because he takes his own version of cheap shots,” he wrote.

CNN political analyst April Ryan called for the firing of White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Thursday, claiming Sanders “lied” to the media following the release of the Mueller report.

In May 2017, following the turbulent firing of FBI Director James Comey, Sanders told reporters that “countless” FBI agents had lost confidence in Comey despite one reporter’s assertion that the “vast majority” of them supported his leadership. According to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office, Sanders told investigators her claim was a “slip of the tongue” and was “in the heat of the moment,” admitting that it was not founded on anything.

Ryan, who is also a White House reporter for the American Urban Radio Networks, blasted the press secretary on Thursday night for “lying” to the American people.

“Not only does she not have any credibility left, she lied,” Ryan told CNN anchor Erin Burnett. “She outright lied and the people, the American people can’t trust her. They can’t trust what’s said from the president’s mouthpiece, spokesperson, from the people’s house. Therefore, she should be let go. She should be fired. End of story. When there is a lack of credibility there, you have to start and start lopping the heads off. It’s ‘Fire Me Thursday’ or ‘Fire Me Good Friday,’ she needs to go.”

The CNN pundit suggested that since President Trump “won’t take the fall” that Sanders might instead.

“Sarah plays a dangerous game in that room… The game is dangerous because she is lying to the American public,” Ryan continued. “Then, on top of all that, she says the press is fake when she’s faking reports from the people’s house. She’s calling us fake? We’ve had colleagues who’ve had to move from their houses because of threats. I have to have security because of being called ‘fake’ and a ‘loser’ and all sorts of things from that White House. It’s time for her to go.”

The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

The National Enquirer tabloid is being sold to James Cohen, the owner and CEO of newsstand company Hudson News, its parent company announced Thursday.

The deal announced by American Media Inc. also includes two other supermarket tabloids, Globe and the National Examiner. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The sale comes after the Enquirer was caught up in a federal investigation of illegal campaign contributions to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016. In September of last year, American Media reached a “non-prosecution” agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in which it admitted to paying former Playboy model Karen McDougal $150,000 for the rights to her story about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in order to “suppress the woman’s story so as to prevent it from influencing the election.”

AMI also admitted that it made the payment to McDougal “in concert with [Trump’s] presidential campaign, and in order to ensure that the woman [McDougal] did not publicize damaging allegations about the candidate before the 2016 presidential election.”

The Enquirer has also been accused by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos of trying to blackmail him by threatening to publish explicit photos of him. The tabloid denies the charges.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
