MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace seemed incredulous after attorney general William Barr, whom she called a “human shield” for Trump, previewed the special counsel’s report on the Russia investigation.

“The question for me now turns to why? why?!” Wallace asked on Thursday. The host portrayed Barr as someone who failed to defend the rule of law while President Trump tarnished it.

“The rule of law had a deficit because Donald Trump had been kicking it in the teeth for 22 months, and what the country’s Attorney General did was walk in there and back up the guy doing the kicking,” Wallace asserted.

Wallace was just one of many media figures to attack Barr after his controversial testimony before Congress earlier this month. The MSNBC host compared Barr to Roy Cohn, the disbarred attorney who helped Sen. Joseph McCarthy with his infamous investigations into communist influences in the country.

MUELLER REPORT SHOWS PROBE DID NOT FIND COLLUSION EVIDENCE, REVEALS TRUMP EFFORTS TO SIDELINE KEY PLAYERS

Barr’s Thursday comments reiterated his previous finding that the special counsel’s report found no evidence of Russian collusion. He and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein also claimed Special Counsel Robert Mueller found insufficient evidence to pursue obstruction of justice charges.

For Wallace, Trump clearly undermined the rule of law on a “daily” and sometimes “hourly” basis. She added that he spent large chunks of time “maligning” the FBI, Mueller, and Rosenstein.

Wallace doubted that the Mueller report exonerated Trump, asking why, if that were true, “have we heard from Barr five times.”

“Why have we heard from Barr five times if the Mueller report is so awesome for Donald Trump?” she asked. “We have now heard from someone who is a human shield of Mueller’s findings five times.”

Attorney General William Barr sparred with a reporter during a brief press conference Thursday in which he laid out the release of the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report into the Russia probe.

During his prepared statement to the press, Barr explained his and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s decision to clear President Donald Trump of any obstruction in relation to Mueller’s investigation. He said that Trump faced “an unprecedented situation.”

BARR AFFIRMS MUELLER PROBE FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF RUSSIA-TRUMP COLLUSION, PREPARES TO RELEASE REPORT

“As he entered office and sought to perform his responsibilities as president, federal agents and prosecutors were scrutinizing his conduct before and after taking office and the conduct of some of his associates,” Barr read of his statement, adding that there was “relentless speculation” in the media about the president’s culpability. “Yet, as he said from the beginning, there was in fact, no collusion.”

In her question to Barr, CBS News White House Correspondent Paula Reid brought up his use of the word “unprecedented” and how his comments were “quite generous to the president and his feelings and emotions.”

“It just seems like there is a lot effort – to go out of your way to acknowledge how this was difficult for him,” she added.

Barr appeared to bristle at the question, responding with his own: “Is there another precedent for it?”

“No,” the reporter answered.

“OK so unprecedented is an accurate description,” he said.

The reporter tried to ask Barr about people who are concerned that he is trying to protect the president.

Barr did not acknowledge her question and moved on.

The attorney general said Thursday that his department would be released the lightly redacted report to the public by 11 a.m. that morning.

While some of her fellow Democrats were questioning the credibility of Attorney General William Barr over his handling of the Robert Mueller report, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., took that criticism to another level.

The California Democrat trashed the attorney general Wednesday night on the eve of Special Counsel Mueller’s report being released to the public, calling Barr “a lackey and a sycophant” for President Trump.

“I never expected Barr to do anything that would be respectful to the members of Congress or to include us in any real way,” she told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, joining colleagues fuming over the decision by Barr to hold a press conference before releasing a redacted version of the report.

“He has proven himself. He auditioned for this job. He was chosen to protect the president of the United States and that’s exactly what he’s doing. I’m not surprised.”

She continued, blasting Barr as “basically a lackey and a sycophant for the president of the United States of America.”

The comments come after Waters attacked Barr during a speech earlier this month.

“I know that you are all worried about the special counsel and the fact that we have a report that has been described to us in a letter by the attorney general. We don’t know what’s in the report yet, and we’re going to demand it,” she said at a Woman’s National Democratic Club dinner.

In the same speech, the California Democrat said of Trump, “certainly, he conspired with the Kremlin and with the oligarchs of Russia.”

Barr’s summary of the report, though, said Mueller found no evidence of collusion.

NUNES’ CRIMINAL REFERRALS OVER MISCONDUCT DURING RUSSIA PROBE COULD INVOLVE ‘TWO DOZEN’ INDIVIDUALS

Nearly two years of fevered speculation surrounding the Russia probe, though, will come to a head in a dramatic television finale-like moment on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET, when Barr and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are set to hold a press conference to discuss the Mueller report’s public release.

It was not immediately clear exactly when on Thursday the DOJ would release the redacted version of the nearly 400-page investigation into Russian election meddling, but the document was expected to be delivered to lawmakers and posted online by noon.

Barr has said redactions in the report’s release are legally mandated.to protect four broad areas of concern: sensitive grand jury-related matters, classified information, ongoing investigations and the privacy or reputation of uncharged “peripheral” people.

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Democrat New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, has said he is prepared to issue subpoenas “very quickly” for the full report if it is released with blacked-out sections, likely setting in motion a major legal battle.

A social media effort has propelled a GoFundMe campaign toward an ambitious goal to rebuild three historically black churches in Louisiana that suffered devastating fires that investigators have since concluded were hate crimes.

On April 10, the Seventh District Baptist Association set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise $1.8 million for St. Mary Baptist Church, Greater Union Baptist Church and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church after they were set on fire allegedly by suspect Holden Matthews.

Inspired by the grand fundraising that took place for the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris after the world watched the iconic house of worship burn, journalist Yashar Ali put a spotlight on the Seventh District Baptist Association’s crowdsourcing effort and urged his followers to donate and match his $1,000 pledge.

Throughout the day, Ali kept updating his followers as thousands of donations poured in to the GoFundMe page. Ali noted that when he first urged his followers to donate, the association had raised roughly $159,000. Since then, they’ve raised over $1.5 million. Ali later updated that over $1.3 million was raised in a 31-hour period.

The campaign caught the attention of big-name donors, including conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, CNN anchor Jake Tapper, “Late Night” host Seth Meyers, former Obama official Valerie Jarrett, and actresses Patricia Arquette, Susan Sarandon, Mandy Moore and Busy Philipps. Former NFL player and Louisiana native Benjamin Watson previously had put a spotlight on the GoFundMe campaign and has renewed his efforts amid the massive social media push.

Matthews, 21, has been charged with arson and hate crimes.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

With the Justice Department yet to release Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on his Russia election meddling probe, Democrats and the media were already voicing doubt about the attorney general’s claim that Mueller had insufficient evidence to show Kremlin collusion with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

While Democrats have already signaled they’ll subpoena a more in-depth, unredacted report, a long list of media figures attacked Attorney General William Barr’s credibility in discussing the Mueller probe’s findings.

Anchors on both CNN and MSNBC suggested, for instance, that Barr had either engaged in a cover-up or turned himself into an untrustworthy political actor. Newsbusters.org, a conservative media watchdog, compiled a montage of the media’s jabs at Barr.

Perhaps the strongest accusations came from MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace and national affairs analyst John Heilemann.

“It’s almost impossible now to not see [Barr] as a political actor, given where we are headed, given the flimsiness of the explanations, given the lengths to which he seems to be going to protect the president,” Heilemann said after Barr’s controversial testimony earlier this month.

MUELLER REPORT MORE THAN 300 PAGES LONG: DOJ

Wallace compared Barr to Roy Cohn, former Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s chief counsel, who assisted in the infamous investigations into communism in Hollywood. In a unanimous decision, a five-judge panel on the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court disbarred Cohn in 1986.

According to Newsbusters, others on MSNBC and CNN claimed Barr was inventing facts, doing “Trump’s dirty work” and tearing down the law he was sworn to protect.

NBC anchor Chuck Todd flat-out accused the administration of engaging in “actual collusion” after a report revealed that Justice Department officials had briefed the White House on the report’s conclusions.

Playboy went ad-free with its winter issue — now on newsstands — and hiked its cover price to a hefty $24.99 per issue hoping that the change to an oversized format can boost revenue, even if circulation takes a hit.

A quick check of its 2018 circulation recently emerged in the form of USPS data that shows that circulation has continued to dip over the past 12 months.

It suggests that Cooper Hefner’s vision for the magazine, which returned nude photos to the mix in the spring of 2017, did nothing to help its sales. One source said it was trying too hard to go younger — which never clicked with millennials and alienated its loyal older readers.

Its average total paid circulation was 206,483 for the six issues in 2018, down by more than a third from a year earlier. It suggests Hefner’s move from chief creative officer to chief of global partnerships more than a year ago was a boot upstairs after his vision foundered.

He said last week he is leaving in May to launch HefPost, an online lifestyle title that will include erotic photos. Hefner, 27, is the youngest child of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, who passed in 2017 at the age of 91.

“The magazine became quarterly in December and is free of ads,” said a spokesman. “We are no longer beholden to advertisements, and that means we have more editorial freedom to do what we want. We are dedicated to continuing the magazine as a print product.”

TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2019 list reveals exactly who is backing who in Washington, D.C., with former and current Democratic presidential candidates rallying behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Brett Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford.

Hillary Clinton, former Secretary of State, penned a short praise for Pelosi for winning back the House and standing up to President Trump.

“Too often it seems we have a surplus of bluster in our national politics and a deficit of action. But then there’s Speaker Nancy Pelosi,” Clinton wrote.

“There’s a saying that goes: ‘If you want something done, ask a busy woman to do it.’ Speaker Nancy Pelosi is living proof that when it comes to getting the job done, more often than not, it takes a woman,” she added, noting that under her leadership “Democrats passed the first major gun-safety bill in a generation.”

Warren takes cues from AOC

But while Clinton picked a safe establishment choice, 2020 presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren opted to embrace Ocasio-Cortez, the freshman Democrat from New York who has lately been the target of Pelosi’s scoffs over her presumed influence on Congressional Democrats.

“Her commitment to putting power in the hands of the people is forged in fire,” Warren wrote of the self-described Democratic Socialist. “Coming from a family in crisis and graduating from school with a mountain of debt, she fought back against a rigged system and emerged as a fearless leader in a movement committed to demonstrating what an economy, a planet and a government that works for everyone should look like.”

ELIZABETH WARREN DEFENDS CAPITALISM AS ‘FORCE FOR GOOD,’ SPLITTING WITH OCASIO-CORTEZ

“… she fought back against a rigged system and emerged as a fearless leader in a movement committed to demonstrating what an economy, a planet and a government that works for everyone should look like.”

— Elizabeth Warren

Warren added that nowadays “millions are taking cues from” Ocasio-Cortez while just a year ago she was “taking orders across a bar.”

“She reminds all of us that even while greed and corruption slow our progress, even while armies of lobbyists swarm Washington, in our democracy, true power still rests with the people. And she’s just getting started,” she wrote.

The senator has embraced Ocasio-Cortez since her arrival in Congress, although though she appears to take a completely opposite view on capitalism, calling it a “force for good” while the congresswoman calls it “irredeemable”.

Despite the disagreement, Warren co-sponsored the Green New Deal, a radical overhaul of the economy in a bid to cut emissions, which is estimated to cost up to $93 trillion or $600,000 per household, though she somewhat distanced herself from it following the official launch of the proposal, saying she supports only the “idea” of the proposal.

Christie rediscovers love for Trump

On the Republican side, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie offered his praise for President Trump, for his foreign policy achievements.

“Every modern U.S. President tries to influence the world. President Donald Trump has done this through opposing the NATO countries not paying their fair share, pushing China and our North American neighbors for fairer trade agreements and withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement,” Christie wrote.

“His boldest move in this direction is likely his personal efforts on the issue of North Korea. President Trump has, in fact, used the past year to place his imprint on a problem spanning more than six decades,” he continued.

“President Trump deserves great credit for daring to try to personally persuade Chairman Kim to join the family of nations. This approach holds the possibility for history–making changes on the Korean Peninsula to make us all safer.”

CHRIS CHRISTIE TELLS COLBERT THAT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER PRESIDENT THAN TRUMP

Christie’s latest praise cements his support for the president. Initially a vicious critic of Trump during the 2016 campaign –even calling him a potential “entertainer-in-chief” – he went on to become one of the leading surrogates for the president.

Yet he fell out with the administration during the transition process after the election and accused Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner of engineering his ouster. He later criticized the administration over its negotiation tactics and personnel.

Earlier this year he also said during an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show that would have been a better president than Trump.

Colbert asked Christie about his relationship with President Trump, saying “he’ll throw anybody under the bus,” to which the former governor responded: “You think I don’t know? I got fired from the transition.”

McConnell’s fiery praise for Kavanaugh

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote a fiery tribute to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, whose confirmation last year came after turbulent hearings and allegations of sexual misconduct, slamming “unhinged partisanship” for trying to block his nomination.

“When Brett Kavanaugh was named the President’s choice to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy, he was one of the most qualified Supreme Court nominees in modern history. He had a sterling academic record, impeccable legal credentials and a prolific record of thoughtful and impartial jurisprudence over more than a decade on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals,” wrote McConnell.

MCCONNELL UNLOADS ON SENATE DEMS AMID KAVANAUGH PROBE: ‘THEIR GOALPOSTS KEEP SHIFTING, BUT THEIR GOAL HASN’T MOVED AN INCH’

He added: “But when unhinged partisanship and special interests sought to distract the Senate from considering those qualifications, we saw other facets of Justice Kavanaugh’s character shine forth as well.

— Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell

“The country saw his resilience and commitment to public service. We saw his loyal devotion to family and friends. We saw his undeterred reverence for the law, for precedents and for our nation’s highest traditions.”

McConnell played an integral part to make the Supreme Court more conservative, standing behind Kavanaugh even as the allegations of impropriety were disclosed at the very last moments of the confirmation process.

Kamala Harris’ stand for Christine Blasey Ford

As a counterpoint, 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris paid a tribute to the first accuser to step forward with the allegations of misconduct against Kavanaugh.

“Her story, spoken while holding back tears, shook Washington and the country. Her courage, in the face of those who wished to silence her, galvanized Americans. And her unfathomable sacrifice, out of a sense of civic duty, shined a spotlight on the way we treat survivors of sexual violence,” Harris wrote.

KAVANAUGH ACCUSERS ROCKED CONFIRMATION PROCESS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

“Christine Blasey Ford’s ambition wasn’t to become a household name or make it onto this list. She had a good life and a successful career—and risked everything to send a warning in a moment of grave consequence.”

During the confirmation hearing of Kavanaugh, Harris praised Ford and said she believes her allegations that include Kavanaugh allegedly attacking her in the 1980s at a high school party.

“I want to thank you for your courage and I want to tell you I believe you,” the senator told her, “You have bravely come forward and I want to thank you. History will show you are a true profile in courage.”

The battle for Russia collusion

TIME’s list also features dueling tributes among current and former deputy Attorney Generals, with one praising Attorney General William Barr’s “principles” and the other touting Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s “apolitical” service.

“A brilliant and principled conservative lawyer, Barr brings unique experience to the challenge of working at the intersection of law and politics,” wrote Rod Rosenstein.

“He knows the history, he understands the issues, he respects the employees, and he will defend the principles. With Bill Barr at the helm, the rule of law is secure.”

Sally Yates, the deputy attorney general who was fired by Trump after she refused to defend the administration’s immigration policies, said Mueller’s life was “governed not by a sense of entitlement but of duty.”

“Distinctly apolitical, he confounds those who can’t comprehend a person driven by his all too uncommon values: honor, integrity, humility, service. He is the inverse image of the man he would ultimately come to investigate,” Yates wrote.

“Soldier, prosecutor, FBI director, and when our country needed someone to untangle Russian election interference, he served again. Taking daily incoming fire, he neither flinched nor retaliated. He just did his job. For Mueller, it’s always about the work, and never about him.

“Abhorring self-promotion, while the country held its collective breath during his nearly two-year investigation, Mueller uttered not a single public word. And when he finished, he called it as he saw it. He did his duty.”

She’s the master of putting the perfect amount of thought into not overthinking, and that’s why her music connects so well.”

“A Star Is Born” was just another recent notch in the legacy of Lady Gaga. Characterized by her powerful and commanding vocal style, Gaga’s music made her into a superstar—but “A Star Is Born” showcased the singer’s incredible acting chops as well. Those acting chops transcended the big screen when it was widely believed that the star entered a relationship with co-star Bradley Cooper—until she shut those rumors down on an episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

On Gaga, legendary singer Celine Dion stated, “She’s definitely one of the most inventive artists we’ve ever seen. Her artistic expression has no rules, no boundaries… What makes her even more special, and such a powerful influence on society, is that she empowers her fans to adopt the very same values in their lives—to stand up for what they believe in, despite what others might think.”

“Wonder Woman” actress and fellow “Fast and Furious” co-star Gal Gadot stated, “Dwayne is someone who believes the sky is the limit and will go above and beyond to make sure he gives 100% every single day, whether he is at the gym, working with his charity (the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation), being with his family and friends, or working on a new project.”

For the past eight years, Emilia Clarke has received rave reviews for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in the hit television series, “Game of Thrones.” Characterized by her bone-white hair and brash confidence in the show, Clarke demonstrated an impeccable amount of character development over the course of the series. Clarke’s portrayal of Targaryen has earned her several award nominations, including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

On Clarke, Emma Thompson stated, “First impressions can mislead. The intimacy of a nine-week shoot will reveal all. Especially one that starts—starts, mind you—at 2 a.m. What was revealed was a woman of mickle might, whose instincts, whetted by years of hard work in environments that were not always safe or healthy, are as finely honed as any I’ve encountered.”

She has made donations to the campaigns of Democratic politicians such as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Actor Robert Redford stated, “Glenn is a major talent, an actor who is deeply committed to her craft. She doesn’t play roles as much as she transforms herself into them, never allowing her own personality or celebrity to get in the way. Through many years now, I’ve been able to call her a friend and colleague. She never looks back, and neither do I. I just try to keep up with her—looking forward to her next performance, always.”

With his powerful artistry, Lee earned many accolades for himself. Lee’s devotion to race relations and colorism in film has inspired many future directors, including “Get Out” and “Us” director Jordan Peele.

In his write-up on Lee, Jordan Peele stated, “Spike Lee can’t be described in a single word. I might struggle to do it in 200. He’s a visionary, a trailblazer, a provocateur and a true American original. He’s made more than two dozen films across nearly every genre, and all of them have been completely different. But to me, the common thread across his career may be his impeccable timing—his ability to understand the cultural landscape of the moment and deliver a spot-on message.”
