Joe Exotic, the now-infamous subject of Netflix’s latest viral sensation “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” has spoken out for the first time since the docuseries swept the country and has since incited huge social media reactions from a number of celebrities.

The seven-part series for the streaming giant follows Exotic, whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, 57, in his exploits as a zookeeper, country musician, aspiring politician and arch-rival of fellow big cat enthusiast Carole Baskin. Maldonado-Passage was handed a 22-year prison sentence for his involvement in a murder-for-hire plot to kill Baskin.

Now, in a recent interview with Netflix, Maldonado-Passage laments the fact that he’s cooped behind bars just as his fame has ascended to new heights and the former private zoo owner is basking in his notoriety.

“You know it would be nice if I could actually see me being famous out there, but I’ve seen these same four walls for a year and a half now,” he told the streamer from prison in a video shared to Twitter on Friday.

In the interview, which took place on March 22, Maldonado-Passage displayed contrition for some of his behavior detailed in the film and added that in hindsight, he’s quite remorseful for some of his animals being encaged in the manner they were.

“Go sit in a cage with your animals for a week,” he said. “I mean, when I left the zoo and I sent my chimpanzees to the sanctuary in Florida and imagined what my chimpanzees went through for 18 years, I — I’m ashamed of myself.”

Maldonado-Passage’s fourth husband Dillon Passage told Andy Cohen on Wednesday that the Tiger King hasn’t yet seen the project but is basking in the attention and notoriety he has received since the series began streaming.

“He’s in jail, so he can’t necessarily watch it, but once the show dropped he was getting hundreds and hundreds of emails to his jail mail, and he was ecstatic,” Passage told Cohen.

Maldonado-Passage, in his jailhouse conversation with Netflix, thanked his husband for remaining by his side during his legal battles and subsequent life behind bars, despite the fact that the pair was only married for eight months before the Tiger King was hauled away for his transgressions.

The big cat wrangler now says that in the light of the series’ popularity, he’s turning a new chapter and making it his mission to get himself out of prison and to clear his name.

“I’m done with the Carole Baskin saga,” he said. “It’s now time to turn the tables and Joe gets out of jail a free man and exonerated from all these charges.”

Maldonado-Passage has reportedly filed a $94 lawsuit, asking for nearly $74 million in loss of personal property, 18 years of research, and the full care of 200 generic tigers and crossbreeds, as well as $15 million for false arrest, false imprisonment, selective enforcement and the death of his mother Shirley, according to People.

Tribeca Film Festival moving some programming online

After being postponed by the coronavirus outbreak in New York City, Tribeca Film Festival announced it’s moving some of its programmings online.

Tribeca organizers said Friday that much of its programming will be available either to the public or to the film industry over roughly the same days that the festival would have taken place in April. That maintains a showcase for the filmmakers and artists who were relying on Tribeca’s platform for exposure.

TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL POSTPONED IN NEW YORK CITY AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

Film festivals give not only upcoming films an opportunity to make a splash but exhibit many smaller movies that are seeking distribution deals. Of the largest festivals canceled by the pandemic — Cannes, SXSW, Tribeca — each has taken a different approach to the crisis.

France’s Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May, is aiming to postpone the event to June or July. South by Southwest, in Texas, was closed by the city of Austin just a week before its mid-March opening. On Thursday, it announced plans to stream participating films for a 10-day period later this month on Amazon Prime.

Tribeca is still hoping to hold a festival in the fall, but Jane Rosenthal, Tribeca’s co-founder and chief executive, acknowledged that would be a smaller-scale event taking place over fewer days. The 19th Tribeca had been scheduled for April 15-26.

SXSW, AMAZON PARTNER UP TO BRING THE FILM FESTIVAL ONLINE

“What we do later in the year would clearly be a differently programmed festival than what we would have done in April,” Rosenthal said in a phone interview Thursday.

Those plans are influx. For now, Tribeca will make available participating films from its competition categories — those that are judged by juries for awards — on an online hub for those in the industry and press. SXSW is making its movies available to the public, and offering a screening fee to each participating film’s makers.

But that approach also risks giving away, for a brief period, what many films most want — distribution. Tribeca is instead aiming to connect movies with buyers and media while preserving a movie’s public launch. Tribeca will also, as SXSW has done, announce awards for its competition categories.

MOVIES BEING RELEASED EARLY ON DEMAND AMID CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

“There’s still more we want to do in addition to what we’re releasing,” said Rosenthal. “There are certain programs we’d like to be able to do at a later time this year when that’s safe. But this, right now, serves the filmmakers and the industry for what they need at this time. Getting those films seen by industry and sales people is vital to those creators.”

Some elements of Tribeca will go straight to viewers, including the festival’s virtual reality and immersive storytelling entries (available via Oculus) and the advertising exhibition, Tribeca’s X Awards (on tribecafilm.com). The festival has already been hosting “A Short Film a Day Keeps Anxiety Away,” with shorts from the festival and Tribeca alumni.

“It’s been hard mostly just to keep up the morale of our team. We’re a festival that started because of 9/11 and our instinct is always to reach out to the community and here is a time when you can’t gather, you can’t do things that filmmakers and entertainment people do,” said Rosenthal. “So how do you do that in a new way?”

Doris Day was not a recluse, spent her final years responding to fans, pal says: ‘She called them her friends’

Doris Day dedicated her final years to being a tireless animal rights advocate, but she never forgot her fans.

Day, who was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the ‘50s and ‘60s, passed away in 2019 at age 97. At the time, her Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed her death at her Carmel Valley, Calif., home.

Julien’s Auctions is presenting “Property From the Estate of Doris Day,” an auction taking place online on April 4th and 5th. All of the proceeds of the auction will benefit The Doris Day Animal Foundation, the icon’s charity she founded in 1978, which funds nonprofit causes that need assistance in their work, caring for and protecting animals.

Day would have turned 98 on April 3.

Lea Price, a close friend of Day’s for over 40 years who is on the board of directors for the Doris Day Animal Foundation, told Fox News the actress was always in awe of the love she received from fans over the years.

“Oh my gosh, I don’t think any other celebrity stayed as connected with her fans as she did,” said Price. “She loved her fans. She called them her friends and she made everyone feel as though they were her friends. When they wrote to her, she would try to answer as many letters as she could.”

Price, who helped Day with her mail shortly before her death, remembered the one message the star received from her faithful followers.

“The recurring theme was ‘You saved me,’” recalled Price. “She never quite understood that. She always felt, ‘I didn’t do anything.’ She appreciated the sentiment, but she was always amazed at all the love that she would receive from all over the world. And really until the day she died, she would get hundreds of letters every month.”

“Really, what you saw was what you got with Doris,” shared Price. “She was just a happy, positive person.”

Day’s final film was “With Six You Get Eggroll,” a 1968 comedy about a widow and a widower who blend families. With movies trending toward more explicit sex, she turned to television. “The Doris Day Show” proved to be a moderate success during its 1968-1973 run on CBS.

While Day didn’t return to Hollywood, Price insisted she was far from a recluse.

She doesn’t go out,’ which was totally untrue. She loved going out and going shopping. She loved her grocery shopping and she would go out to eat every once in a while. And she still kept busy with her two animal charities, which are both thriving and continuing today. She was actively involved until she passed away. She was very content.”

Still, Hollywood kept calling in hopes that Day would eventually make a comeback.

“She continued to get offers,” said Price. “She never said that she was retiring or leaving Hollywood. I think it was something that just sort of evolved. She just moved on to other things. She always said, probably more so in the ‘80s and ‘90s, ‘I might work again. You never know.’ But I think she was just content doing what she was doing. She said at one point she felt like today’s movies were for the young people and no longer relevant to what she had been doing. She appreciated them, but she just thought, ‘OK, I’ve moved on. I’m doing something else now.’ And she was happy.”

Price admitted she still misses her beloved pal’s laughter — and the stories they shared behind closed doors. According to Price, Day still very much treasured her friendship with the late actor and former co-star Rock Hudson.

She said that the director would get mad at them because they would just start laughing. The director would huff and puff and go, ‘OK, we have to finish the film here. Let’s get it together.’ She just loved him so much and apparently he felt exactly the same way.

“Doris was very down to earth and had a great sense of humor, but she was also a survivor,” Price continued. “She went through so much in her life and yet she always had a positive attitude. She always said that she was like one of those dolls with the round bottom. When you punch them, they just bounce right back up. That was Doris.”

When Day sang at a Hollywood party in 1947, she soon found herself in front of the camera and appeared in 1955’s “Love Me or Leave Me.” However, her greatest success came in comedy, beginning with 1959’s “Pillow Talk.” In the 1960s, Day discovered that failed investments by her third husband, Martin Melcher, left her deeply in debut. She later won a multimillion-dollar judgment against their lawyer.

Melcher passed away in 1969. Terry, who later became a songwriter and record producer, died in 2004.

Day devoted her life to helping animals in need — and Price said she wouldn’t have had it any other way.

SUSAN LUCCI RECALLS HER ‘WIDOW-MAKER’ HEART ATTACK SCARE: ‘I PROBABLY WOULDN’T HAVE GOTTEN UP’

“She and a group of actors [originally] started Actors and Others for Animals here in Hollywood, and it was because they could use their celebrity to bring awareness to the animal welfare issues that really weren’t being addressed back in the ‘70s,” said Price. “So many animals were being euthanized in shelters. And so she brought awareness to spaying and neutering and the whole homeless pet population, and really just devoted the latter part of [her life] to it.”

Before Day’s passing, Price said she wanted to be remembered for more than just her talents on screen.

“What she wanted to be remembered for was making this world a better one for animals,” said Price. “Hopefully that legacy will continue on through the Doris Day Animal Foundation… Hopefully, her legacy will be able to live on for generations to come. I’m grateful that we have all of her recordings and films so younger people can get acquainted with her and hopefully see all the good she did in the world.”

Celebrities throughout the country are keeping busy during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic that has many of us cooped inside for hours on in — and you can add Jenny McCarthy and Donnie Wahlberg to the mix of folks bringing an upbeat spirit to those staying home amid the outbreak.

Taking a page out of the “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” playbook, the lively couple channeled their inner Joe Exotic for a spoof of one of the now-incarcerated big cat enthusiast and country singer’s songs where he croons alongside one of his many exotic tigers.

McCarthy, 47, shared the video to her Instagram, which shows Wahlberg, 50, in a black tank-top, blue jeans and a blonde mullet, similar to the one styled by Joseph Maldonado-Passage, otherwise known as the “Tiger King.”

She captioned the post, “#JoeExotic and his meow kitty versus @donniewahlberg and his meow meow kitty!”

For her part, the “Masked Singer” panelist dressed up as one of Maldonado-Passage’s tigers as she meandered close to Wahlberg while on all fours as he lip-syncs “Because You Love Me,” which according to People magazine, isn’t even sung by Maldonado-Passage in real life.

During the video, Wahlberg continuously slaps at McCarthy while she cozies up and paws at him in various parts during her cosplay.

The “New Kids on the Block” co-founder even grabs an acoustic guitar and pretends to hit the tiger with it, in a display of Maldonado-Passage’s behavior that PETA called “truly sad” in its Twitter response to the Tiger King’s portrayal.

“Most accurate portrayal of #TigerKing yet!” the organization tweeted on Thursday. “It’s truly sad to see how animals are exploited for profit 💔 PETA helped rescue 39 tigers, 3 bears, 2 baboons, and 2 chimpanzees from Joe Exotic’s hellhole roadside zoo. Join us in helping tigers!”

The seven-part series for the streaming giant follows Joseph Maldonado-Passage, 57, in his exploits as a zookeeper, country musician, aspiring politician and arch-rival of fellow big cat enthusiast Carole Baskin. Maldonado-Passage was handed a 22-year prison sentence for his involvement in a murder-for-hire plot to kill Baskin, as well as multiple animal-rights violations, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

On Wednesday, Rebecca Chaiklin, one of the filmmakers on the project revealed the two names the convicted cat wrangler would want to see play him in a movie about his life.

Joe Exotic, the famed and currently incarcerated subject of the wildly popular Netflix docuseries “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” has an interesting cast of players he would want to portray him if a screenplay on his life story made it to production — and the list is very short.

“He would like Brad Pitt or David Spade to play him,” said Rebecca Chaiklin, one of the filmmakers who brought the project to the masses. “He doesn’t refer to David Spade as David Spade — he refers to him as ‘Joe Dirt,’” she added on Wednesday during an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

Maldonado-Passage’s husband Dillon Passage, told Andy Cohen on Wednesday that the Tiger King hasn’t yet seen the project but is basking in the attention and notoriety he has received since the series began streaming.

“He’s in jail, so he can’t necessarily watch it, but once the show dropped he was getting hundreds and hundreds of emails to his jail mail, and he was ecstatic,” Passage told Cohen.

In the midst of the series’ popularity, Dax Shepard expressed a desire to play Joe Exotic as well as Pitt’s “Fight Club” co-star Edward Norton. The two traded light social media jabs at the idea of playing the figure.

“If I don’t get cast as Joe Exotic in the eventual biopic, Hollywood is broken,” the “Spin the Wheel” host tweeted last month before Norton swooped in to stake his claim to the role. “Um, step aside, pal. You’re way too young and buff and you know it.”

‘TIGER KING’ STARS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

Shepard, quipped back, “😁😁😁😁😁 I’ll go ‘Machinist’ for this,” shouting out Christian Bale’s dramatic weight loss for the 2004 film.

During Passage’s conversation with Cohen on the Bravo star’s SiriusXM show, Passage revealed that Maldonado-Passage entered “COVID-19 isolation” while carrying out his sentence.

The Golden Globes will accept movie submissions without a theatrical release for the first time ever due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Thursday.

The press association, which puts on the annual award show, said films that are first released on television or a streaming service will be eligible for January’s Globes. Usually, the Globes mandate that a film play for a week in a Los Angeles theater or on pay-per-view, as well as have an official screening for its voting members.

The press association said the eligibility change was temporary and would last from March 15 to April 30, “with this period subject to later review and extension.”

The Academy Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences have yet to announce a similar move. The Oscars specify that a film must have a seven-day run in a commercial Los Angeles County theater with at least three screenings a day. That rule has for several years come under scrutiny because of the rise of streaming services that would sometimes prefer their films went straight to paying subscribers.

The film academy last week said it was “evaluating all aspects of this uncertain landscape.”

With most movie theaters closed nationwide — including all of those in Los Angeles — numerous films are forgoing a theatrical release and going straight to streaming or on-demand. On Wednesday, a film widely expected to contend for best documentary awards later this year — “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” which won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival — premiered on Netflix after canceling its planned release in select theaters.

Like me, you probably saw the video compilation of celebrities singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” in response to the global pandemic. Of course, in very quick fashion the video was parodied as people reacted against another example of an out-of-touch Hollywood. Americans have become all too familiar with celebrities making shallow gestures toward the people across this country that they usually hold in contempt.

But during a recent conversation with a longtime friend who works in the entertainment industry, she expressed concern that if the coronavirus shutdown goes on too long, they won’t be able to make their monthly housing payment.

It was a reminder that Hollywood, just like the rest of the country, is filled with support and service work positions. Jobs that you can’t do from home. Like millions of others, these are the folks that run the risk of suffering the most from the economic fallout of COVID-19.

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON: TRUMP CAN DEFEAT CORONAVIRUS, SAVE ECONOMY AND TURN DISASTER INTO AN AMERICAN VICTORY

As a child actor, I had the amazing opportunity to grow up in the entertainment industry, moving from Colorado to California to pursue my dream.

My acting career brought me name recognition through playing the eldest son, Brad, on the hit series “Home Improvement.” I later moved on to acting in other TV shows like “E.R.” and “Cold Case,” and played roles in various feature films like “The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift” and starred opposite Gerard Butler in “The Games of Their Lives.”

More from Opinion

Needless to say, I received a unique and invaluable education. Although I saw firsthand the elitist and cutthroat nature of Hollywood that it’s known for, I’ve also had the opportunity to work with some amazing people. They are everyday Americans who come from all over the country to pursue their dreams in entertainment. These people are the engine that makes Hollywood run.

While A-list celebrities can’t help using their award show speeches to mock anyone that doesn’t hold to their elitist views, the dirty little secret is that they represent the elite 1 percent of Hollywood. The rest of the people in the entertainment industry are everyday folks living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to make a living wage.

I’m passionate that during an unprecedented crisis like we are seeing with COVID-19, the hardworking folks of Hollywood don’t get forgotten or dismissed with the celebrities and their feel-good video compilations.

These celebrities would all benefit from moving from in front of the camera to behind it. I know because I experienced that firsthand, transitioning from actor to the launch of my own production company, Lost Lane Entertainment. That change has given me the opportunity to work behind the scenes with the Americans who are in the trenches.

It’s a great privilege for me, as someone who came from middle America, to create alongside those who work hard to care for their families and pursue their dreams. These are the men and women who come in at dusk and are still there hours after dawn when the celebrities and their entourages have left.

Like Americans in any other industry, they are the backbone of Hollywood, the ones who make sure things get done.

That’s why I’m passionate that during an unprecedented crisis like we are seeing with COVID-19, the hardworking folks of Hollywood don’t get forgotten or dismissed with the celebrities and their feel-good video compilations.

I understand if you get frustrated during times like this with the political statements or tone-deaf actions of the celebrities. I do, too.

But please be sure to separate the 1 percent of Hollywood from the 99 percent that represents the hardworking, everyday Americans who, like everyone else across this amazing country, are scared about losing their job, figuring out how to provide for their family and cheering on all the people who are at battle with this unseen enemy.

Witherspoon also had to kiss a boy for the first time in the movie —  “I had to kiss a boy onscreen for the first time, and I was 14 years old and I was so embarrassed.”

“Cruel Intentions”

The hit 1999 film also featured Sarah Michelle Gellar, Selma Blair, and Ryan Phillippe, whom Witherspoon got engaged to after filming.

The director Roger Kumble said that Witherspoon first turned down the role and he and Phillippe had to beg her to take it.

“So, basically, we took Reese out to dinner to get her drunk, and we ended up getting drunk. And I literally got down on my knees and begged her: ‘Please, it’ll be 15 days, you’ll be great,'” Kumble told Cosmo. “And Reese was like, ‘I’ll do it. But we need to work on the character.’

“She wanted to strengthen the character, and she was right,” Kumble added. “And she and I got together, and we gave Annette more bite so she wasn’t a doormat. And I’m very grateful to her for that.”

“Walk the Line”

The 2005 movie about country music icons Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash proved Witherspoon’s acting chops and she swept awards season walking away with the Oscar for best actress.

“The thing I really like about this film is I think she’s a multi-faceted woman. I don’t think that she is just sort of the supportive wife. I think she goes through a lot of indecision through the process of ultimately committing to him, and I think that’s more realistic for a woman,” she explained to Live About in a 2008 interview.

“Legally Blonde”

Arguably, the 2001 comedy is Witherspoon’s most iconic role.

“I have had so many women say, ‘I went to law school because of ‘Legally Blonde,’” Witherspoon said on social media. “It actually had a meaningful story. And it was about female empowerment. It wasn’t necessarily about the girl getting the guy.”

“Big Little Lies”

Besides being in front of the camera, Witherspoon is also successful behind the scenes. She started her own production company and moved into the TV world.

She told Vogue in 2017 she grabbed the chance to buy the book rights and developed the show.

“I thought the book was really well-plotted. I loved all the characters, I thought they were really dynamic women and very truthful in their struggles and the way that they communicated with each other. I thought it was a unique opportunity to have five really talented, diverse women on screen together, which is something that doesn’t happen that often.”
