Starbucks has announced it will now require all customers to wear face masks when visiting the coffee chain.

The new rule, which will be implemented at all Starbucks company-owned locations, begins July 15.

The major coffee company said in a news release that if customers do not have a mask — for example, in areas where a local government mandate is not in place — they will not be allowed inside the facility but can order Starbucks through a drive-thru, for curbside pickup or place an order for delivery.

The mask rule is just an added effort from the company, which has already increased its cleaning and other protocols in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Stores located in cities where there is a government mandate to wear a mask while outside have already been requiring customers to wear one while inside placing or picking up an order.

Recently Starbucks’ policies have gotten some push back.

Early last month, Starbucks changed its policy on baristas wearing Black Lives Matter apparel after it received backlash for a company memo that reportedly banned team members from wearing clothing supporting the movement.

An Oregon State Police trooper who refused to wear a mask at a Corvallis coffee shop Wednesday has been placed on leave, according to reports.

“F— Kate Brown,” the trooper reportedly told the shop’s assistant manager, referring to the state’s governor, a Democrat .

Brown’s statewide mask mandate to combat the coronavirus took effect that same day, FOX 12 of Oregon reported.

“Governor Brown has no authority to take our civil liberties. We aren’t going to wear masks,” Travis Boss from the coffee shop allegedly said, according to OregonLive.com of Portland.

OREGON GOVERNOR SAYS HOSPITALS COULD BE OVERWHELMED IF CORONAVIRUS CASES NOT REDUCED, MANDATES FACE COVERINGS

Other troopers entering the same shop also did not wear masks but Boss said he filled their drink orders because they were in uniform even though he refused to serve other customers who wouldn’t wear masks, the report said.

The shop, Allan’s Coffee & Tea, later reported the incident to local police, prompting the State Police to launch an investigation, Capt. Timothy Fox of the State Police told the news outlet.

None of the state troopers has been identified, USA Today reported.

After the newspaper wrote about the incident, Oregon State Police Superintendent Travis Hampton posted a Twitter message in which he apologized for the troopers’ behavior, calling it “embarrassing and indefensible.”

“Let me be clear,” Hampton wrote, “Oregon State Police Troopers are not above the law and this conduct is being immediately addressed. As the leader of the Oregon State Police, I would like to offer my apology to the coffee shop employees and the community.”

“Not only are police officers expected to comply with the Governor’s emergency declaration orders, I expect them to set the example for Oregon’s residents as we strive to fight this invisible enemy- the Coronavirus,” Hampton added.

All across the U.S., police interactions with the public have been drawing increased scrutiny since the May 25 death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis. Floyd’s death – which led to the arrests of four police officers, including one on murder charges – touched off a series of riots and protests that have continued into this month in some cities.

Brown’s mask mandate applies to all indoor public settings in the state. A previous mandate applied only to eight counties.

Starbucks updates policy on Black Lives Matter apparel following backlash

Starbucks has announced that it will be allowing its employees to express their support for Black Lives Matter following backlash over a company memo that reportedly prohibited its team members from wearing clothing or apparel that advocated for the movement.

“As we talked about earlier this week, we’re designing new t-shirts with the graphic below to demonstrate our allyship and show we stand together in unity,” wrote Roz Brewer, the COO of Starbucks, and Zing Shaw, Starbucks’ vice president for inclusion and diversity, in an open letter to partners published on Friday.

On Friday, Starbucks told employees to “just be you. Wear your BLM pin or t-shirt.”

“Until these arrive, we’ve heard you want to show your support, so just be you. Wear your BLM pin or t-shirt,” the letter continued. “We are so proud of your passionate support of our common humanity. We trust you to do what’s right while never forgetting Starbucks is a welcoming third place where all are treated with dignity and respect.”

Backlash against the coffee chain began brewing earlier this week, after Starbucks reportedly sent a memo to employees that outlined the store’s policy against wearing Black Lives Matter-related apparel in the workplace, according to Buzzfeed News.

The internal memo also pointed employees to a video of management explaining that “agitators who misconstrue the fundamental principles” of the Black Lives Matter movement could potentially use the apparel to “amplify divisiveness.”

Following Buzzfeed’s report, social media lashed out at the chain, voicing their criticism and even calling for boycotts. Some, who claimed to work for Starbucks, further accused the chain of hypocrisy, as Starbucks had publicly vowed to “confront racism to create a more inclusive and just world” in a statement released amid the George Floyd protests only last week. George Floyd died on May 25 while in the custody of Minneapolis police.

Others pointed out that Starbucks had even encouraged its partners to celebrate the LGBTQ community and the Pride movement, selling Pride-themed gift cards and cups to consumers.

On Friday, however, Starbucks committed to addressing its employees’ concerns “so we can make space to heal.”

“Together, we’re saying: Black Lives Matter and it’s going to take ALL of us, working together, to affect change,” Friday’s letter continued. “That means using our voice to vote in our elections, volunteering in our black communities, joining local peaceful protests, ensuring our diverse slates of job candidates translate into diverse hires, mentoring and sponsoring partners of color so they can reach their maximum potential and taking steps to build greater understanding with empathy.”

Brewer and Shaw ended the letter by saying that employees would be receiving “additional operational guidance” on June 15.

Starbucks sparked a backlash after it was revealed the company won’t allow employees to wear Black Lives Matter clothing or accessories.

The company cited it policy prohibiting political attire and said it was necessary “to create a safe and welcoming” environment for customers, according to BuzzFeed.

Many on Twitter expressed their disgust over the policy, calling for a boycott of the coffee chain.

Some people pointed out that despite the no “politics” policy, the company has promoted LQBTQ Pride.

Still, not everyone was upset by the policy.

Last week, amid nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis after a white officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes, Starbucks vowed it would “confront racism.”

“We stand in solidarity with our Black partners, customers and communities,” the company said in a statement posted on Twitter. “We wil not be bystanders.”

After some store managers contacted company leadership regarding employees who wanted to wear Black Lives Matter attire, management pointed them to a video from the vice president of inclusion and diversity that said “agitators who misconstrue the fundamental principles” of the movement could use it to “amplify divisiveness,” according to BuzzFeed.

Sure, it can make and serve coffee, but can it horribly misspell our names, too?

A café in South Korea is reportedly utilizing robotic baristas to whip up its coffee drinks and serve them to customers, in the hopes of reducing the amount of human interaction between patrons and employees.

The technology behind the robots was developed by a firm called Vision Semicon along with a state-run science institute, Reuters reported.

“Our system needs no input from people from order to delivery, and tables were sparsely arranged to ensure smooth movements of the robots, which fits with the current ‘untact’ and distancing campaign,” said Lee Dong-bae, the director of research at Vision Semicon, per Reuters.

The café’s operation utilizes both a coffee-making “arm” and a mobile serving robot, which together can make and distribute 60 different types of drinks. There’s also a kiosk where customers input their coffee orders, further reducing any human interaction.

In fact, there’s only one human employee in the whole café, in charge of both pastries and janitorial duties. This, however, has already sparked a separate worry, as at least one customer feared that “robots would replace humans” at coffee shops and cafés near a local university.

Then again, it’s not as if the idea of robotic baristas hasn’t been tried before in the States. The idea may be earning renewed interest thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but a San Francisco coffee shop called Café X had introduced the idea of a robotic barista arm over a year ago. And, as of last week, a robotic barista was serving patrons of In J Coffee in Portland, Ore., as seen in the following video from The Oregnian.

Owner Joe Yang, however, told the outlet that his robot can’t yet serve up certain specialty cocktails that only a truly “talented barista” could make.

A Minnesota-based coffee chain known for its catchy slogans is trying to fix an ill-timed marketing ploy that contradicts recommended behavior during the coronavirus pandemic.

An employee posted a video to TikTok showing what appeared to be a box of coffee sleeves with phrases like: “The scenic route is the only route” and “May cause irrepressible happiness.”

“I have to take out every fourth one, because they printed them with the words: ‘”Fight the urge to remain indoors,'” he said.

The offending sleeves are then placed in a separate crate. In a statement to Fox News, the chain said employees were asked to “sort out materials that were produced before the pandemic and aren’t exactly on point with the heroic efforts that are being made to contain the Coronavirus.”

The company said it has implemented social distancing measures and other protocols to limit the spread of the contagion.

Dunkin’ restaurants now serving all hot drinks in paper cups, eliminating foam

Farewell, foam.

Dunkin’ is officially serving all hot drinks in double-walled paper cups at all of its U.S. locations. The new disposable drinkware replaces the coffee chain’s previous use of polystyrene foam cups.

Dunkin’ announced the sustainability change on Monday, a transition that was in the works for two years. The coffee chain will also shift to the exclusive use of recyclable hot coffee cup lids in its American locations by the end of the summer.

According to the coffee chain, the new cups maintain “heat retention properties comparable to the prior foam cups,” keeping their liquid contents hot while hands stay cool, eliminating the need for a sleeve.

The transition to the new sustainable cups will remove about one billion foam cups from the waste stream each year, Dunkin’ said.

Meanwhile, the new hot drink tops will be made of #5 polypropylene, which can be recycled in local areas offering #5 recycling. In correlation with the new cups, this transition will eliminate 19 million pounds of polystyrene from the waste stream annually.
