Oregon woman fired from bank job after giving struggling man $20 to get home for Christmas: report

An Oregon woman claims she was fired from her bank job after helping a struggling customer get home to his family on Christmas Eve by giving him $20 of her own money.

Emily James worked as a senior banker at a U.S. Bank call center in Portland when she received a call from a customer last month whose paycheck had been placed on hold, The Oregonian reported.

James worked to help Marc Eugenio, a Clackamas resident, get access to the more than $1,000 that should have been in his account before telling him to go to his local bank the next day to get the money cleared by a manager.

The following day, on Christmas Eve, Eugenio visited his local branch but because of the holiday, no one was able to help him.

A devasted Eugenio called the 1-800 line from a gas station where, according to report, he was stranded with no money to fill his tank to get home.

He requested to speak to James, explaining what had happened before adding: “I wish I had just 20 bucks to get home.”

James, realizing how close the man was, decided to act.

Eugenio told the paper that the woman from the call center told him to wait for help, as she was just a few miles away.

“I didn’t want her to do it,” he said. “But I’m not proud to the point that I’m going to refuse help.”

According to the report, James said she received permission from her supervisor to drive out.

“I handed him $20 in cash, said ‘Merry Christmas’ and went right back to work,” she said.

But days later, on Dec. 31, she was informed by a service manager that her job had been terminated because of her “unauthorized interaction with a customer.” James told the paper that her supervisor was also fired, although this was not confirmed.

In a statement to the New York Post, a spokesperson explained that James was fired after putting “herself and the bank at risk.”

“At U.S. Bank, we have policies and procedures in place to protect our customers and employees,” the statement read. “Ms. James was terminated following an internal investigation into her interactions with a customer. During this review it was determined Ms. James did not use the available solutions to remedy the customer’s situation and instead put herself and the bank at risk with her actions.”

Eugenio said he feels bad that James lost her job trying to help, but James seemed to not mind after seeing how the situation was handled.

“I don’t think I would want to continue to work for someone who would do that,” she told The Oregonian.

Hustler Magazine sends graphic Christmas card to lawmakers depicting Trump’s assassination

Hustler Magazine is under fire of a graphic Christmas card that was sent to several lawmakers featuring a depiction of President Trump‘s assassination.

The cover of the card shows an illustration of a gunman saying, “I just shot Donald Trump on Fifth Avenue. And no one arrested me.”

The inside, however, shows a figure resembling President Trump laying in a pool of blood in the middle of a busy street with smiling civilians along with the gunman saying, “Merry Christmas”

The card adds, “from all of us at Hustler” in the bottom corner.

One of the recipients, Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., condemned the card.

RON HOWARD TRASHES TRUMP ON TWITTER, CALLS HIM A ‘MORALLY BANKRUPT EGO MANIAC’

“Here’s all you need to know about the radical Left. A young staffer of mine opened this in a stack of holiday mail today. Just imagine if a conservative had distributed such a disgusting and hateful piece about a Democrat. I hope this will be investigated by the @secretservice,” Johnson tweeted.

Mark Zaid, the anti-Trump attorney who legally represents the whistleblower in the Ukraine scandal, also slammed the card.

“This is unacceptable, and clearly I’m no fan of this President. But this absolutely crosses the line and there should be a public apology. Something like this is not a joking matter,” Zaid tweeted.

Hustler Magazine confirmed the card’s authenticity to Fox News but declined to provide further comment.

The magazine’s founder, Larry Flynt, has previously expressed animosity towards the president. Back in 2017, Flynt and Hustler Magazine put a full-page ad in The Washington Post offering a “$10 million” reward for “information leading to the impeachment and removal of office” of President Trump.

Fox News’ Charlie Creitz contributed to this report.

Arizona college students expand Christmas tree removal business

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Many Americans are packing away their holiday decorations for another year, but figuring out what to do with the old Christmas tree can be difficult. A group of college students in Arizona has been pushing a solution to take the hassle out of the holidays — and their enterprise is growing.

Connor Hogan and his friend Dillon Newgaard started the business three years ago while freshmen at Arizona State University, later recruiting two more friends. The company, Ahwatukee Christmas Tree removal, was named for their village in Phoenix.

“We realized we had this great opportunity to help folks in our community. We helped our parents remove their trees and we said, you know, why not help other folks? We’re well-bodied college individuals that want to make a little bit of cash on the side. We’re smart entrepreneurs. Why don’t we go out and start our own little business?” Hogan said.

They started off with just 17 trees in their first year. Now juniors, they said they had almost 300 bookings this year. “We’ve definitely grown a lot, so we are expecting around 200-300 which is double and more than double than last year,” Newgaard said.

They’ve aimed to remove every last branch and needle for about $25, picking up each tree either from the curb or inside the home.

“It’s heavy and it’s awkward to carry out and it makes a big trail of needles… so it’s nice that’s there’s someone who can come take care of that for us,” customer Rachel Martin said.

However, not everyone has been branching out; some people in the city have preferred to keep doing the job themselves. The city has offered several options for recycling Christmas trees.

“We’ve always dropped it off. It’s easy, it’s free, it’s close by, you know, to save the money and spend it on something else, I guess,” Lupie Sanchez of Phoenix said.

The Ahwatukee crew is almost completely booked up through Jan. 11, right before the students head back to school.

“It’s great when you get to do it and help out with your friends and have fun, make a little cash and help a lot of people out in the community,” said Morgan Taylor, a senior at the University of Washington.

New this year, they were able to donate six fully decorated Christmas trees to families in need. A local tree farm donated the trees, and Hogan and his crew paid for the rest. It’s something they said they hoped to continue.

“It was something we definitely look forward to doing in the future and I really think that gives our business a lot of purpose,” Hogan added.

Army veteran recycles Christmas trees into canes

COPPERAS COVE, Texas – A U.S. Army veteran from Copperas Cove, Texas, is continuing to serve his country even without the uniform.

Jamie Willis is a Desert Storm vet who suffered a back injury during his eight years of service. After the Veterans Affairs hospital gave him a diagnosis of 100-percent disability, Willis has since relied on a cane to walk. That inspired his non-profit, Canes for Veterans Central Texas.

The 50-year-old started making canes out of recycled Christmas trees in 2016. Since then, he’s made more than 200 and given them all away.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the veterans, getting the canes out to all my brother and sisters out there,” Willis said. “It starts with one cane, make one cane and give it away.”

With the holidays nearing an end, Willis called on his community to donate their Christmas trees so he could make more canes in 2020. The community responded quickly, donating more than 1,000 trees to the non-profit.

“The community has been great, they have shown so much love and support for this and without them there is no way this could have happened,” Willis said. “This has spread like wildfire, pretty much.”

Willis said of all the support he has received, one story in particular stood out to him the most.

“There was a lady that drove all the way from Dallas with her son, who is a veteran, just to drop off a single tree and to meet me and to shake my hand and say thank you. That one touched me big time, that to me was amazing,” Willis said.

Stores including Lowe’s and The Home Depot also donated to Willis. The Home Depot told Fox News: “… Because veterans are such a big part of our own company culture, we understand the importance of serving those who have served us all…”

Once the trees are donated, crews would cut off the limbs and leave the trees to dry out. Once the trees dried, Willis would strip the bark off and attach handles to them, add coats of polyurethane and ship them off to people in need. Willis said he learned the process from Oscar De Vere Morris, the owner of a group called Free Canes for Veterans.

The canes have been sent to several different places, including Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio, California, Alaska, Germany and the U.K.

“There is more good people out here than what you normally see. It has just been amazing, I can’t really put it into words,” Willis said.

Willis said it will take about four to six months for his newly donated trees to dry out before he could start turning them into canes. In the meantime, the veteran has prepared a list of things he will need to get going once the wood is ready, including sandpaper, grinder discs, polyurethane and paintbrushes.

Viral video of girl crying over black doll for Christmas not racist, sister says

The sister of a young girl who went viral after screaming as she opened a black doll for Christmas insists there was no racist intent.

The video, which has been viewed nearly eight million times on Twitter, showed the youngster unwrapping the toy as her family watched on.

Shortly after unveiling the black doll, the 7-year-old screams and starts crying before launching it out of her hands.

Family members can be heard laughing as the little girl sits in tears.

The person taking the video then zooms in on the doll before saying through laughter to the girl: “What is it? It’s a nice dolly.”

“It’s a lovely doll.”

Some have branded the parents of the youngster “disgusting,” but the young lass’ sister claims the reaction was only because she hates dolls.

She wrote on Twitter: “Just like to come on and explain about the video that went viral.”

“My intentions of posting this video wasn’t to be ‘racist’ at all, my sister & family are 100% not racist and it wasn’t meant to come across that way,” she said.

“The doll was a Christmas present from a family member [who] obviously didn’t know my sister isn’t a fan of dolls full stop,” she continued.

“I was just videoing her opening her presents as you normally do to see the excitement and happiness on their face,” she said.

“Obviously she wasn’t best pleased with a doll, she’s only 7-years-old and definitely didn’t mean it in a malicious way,” she added. “She just doesn’t like any dolls at all she was just scared as it looked scary, she’s now happy with it!”

A Tennessee woman’s Christmas gift to her “pyromaniac” father has gone viral.

When Katie Van Slyke locked her eyes on a flamethrower being advertised on Instagram, she knew it would be the perfect gift for her fire-enthusiast dad.

“I’ve seen my dad for years be a mild pyromaniac, so I’ve always been on the lookout for a gift that would wow him,” Van Slyke told “Fox & Friends” on Saturday.

Van Slyke said growing up she would often see her father, Matt, be admonished at restaurants for stoking the flames at fireplaces.

“He’s always the guy that brings fireworks,” she added.

While a flamethrower isn’t your average gift, Slyke knew it was the perfect thing to buy for her father. Not surprisingly, he loved it.

Matt Van Slyke described his reaction to the flamethrower as “pure jubilee.”

“My wife and my daughter, they try and seems like I always figure out what’s going on. This time I was completely surprised and completely elated,” he said.

The Internet apparently also loved the scorching Christmas gift.

Katie shared a video of herself showing off the flamethrower on Christmas Day. “I got my dad a flame thrower for Christmas, meaning I’m the best daughter that has ever existed,” she tweeted.

The video has since garnered 1.1 million views.

Hunter Biden and his wife, Melissa, were conspicuously absent from a family Christmas photo posted by former Vice President Joe Biden on Christmas Day.

“May your time with loved ones be full of peace, laughter, and joy. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. With love, from my family to yours,” Biden captioned the photo on Twitter.

HUNTER BIDEN IS SUBJECT OF CRIMINAL PROBES, SAYS PI FIRM HINTING AT MORE INCRIMINATING DETAILS

The photo includes Joe Biden, his wife, Jill, their daughter Ashley and some of their grandchildren, including Hunter’s three daughters Naomi, Finnegan and Maisy, according to The New York Post.

The photo prompted many on Twitter to ask why Hunter wasn’t included.

It’s not clear where Hunter and Melissa were on Christmas Day. The couple were seen in Los Angeles the day after Christmas, according to The Post.

Biden later sent out a video that showed his dogs Champ and Major running around the house playing with chew toys and eating Christmas cookies.

“When we say Merry Christmas from the entire Biden family, that means even the dogs,” Biden posted on his Twitter page.

Hunter Biden has become a controversial part of his father’s presidential campaign since his work on the board of Ukrainian oil company Burisma while his father was involved diplomatically with the country during the Obama administration came to light.

No evidence of wrongdoing has been found by either Joe or Hunter Biden in the matter.

Hunter’s involvement with Burisma was a catalyst to President Trump’s impeachment after a whistleblower reported a July phone call with Ukraine’s president in which Trump asked Ukraine to investigate Hunter’s work there.

Hunter, who got married earlier this year, is reportedly now expecting a child with his new bride. Last month, he was found by a court in Arkansas to also be the father of another woman’s child who he denies having sex with following a DNA test, according to court documents.

California redwood tree falls, kills hiker at national park

A Minnesota man was killed during a Christmas Eve visit to a national park in California when an enormous redwood tree fell on him, authorities said Thursday.

Subhradeep Dutta, 28, of Edina, Minn., was walking on a marked trail just after 4:35 p.m. Tuesday at the Muir Woods National Monument Park, north of San Francisco, when he became pinned by the trunk of a 200-foot-tall tree.

Dutta was with two other people when the incident took place. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Marin County Coroner’s Office and a park spokesman.

A park spokesman told The Associated Press that the incident happened after two weeks of winter storms.

“This is a very rare, and isolated event that may have occurred due to wet ground from recent winter storms, around the roots of the tree,” park spokesman Charles Strickfaden said in an email.

“The National Park Service extends its thoughts and prayers to all those involved,” he added.

The area affected by debris from the falling tree was closed Thursday while the rest of the park remained open.

Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos spend Christmas in the mountains, show off gifts

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos celebrated Christmas in the mountains and received some meaningful gifts in the process.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Ripa, 49, shared an image of her and husband Consuelos, 48, posing in front of their Christmas tree while rocking pajamas on her Instagram Story.

The “Live with Kelly and Ryan” host also showed off the gift that she received from her “favorite third child,” son Joaquin, 16.

Ripa also shared a photo of her and Consuelos riding up a ski lift before hitting the snow-covered mountains.

She captioned the post, “Naughty and Nice 🎄❄️☃️⛷🎿.”

In mid-December, Ripa took to Instagram to show off her 2019 family Christmas card.

The photo collage shows Ripa and her loved ones striking their best family poses — both serious and cheeky — while the “Live with Kelly and Ryan” co-host orchestrates the whole charade; some images show Ripa setting the camera timer and barely making it back to pose in time for the shutter to capture the family moment.

The adorable holiday card said the family is “tipping into 2020,” with Ripa and Consuelos’ youngest child, 16-year-old Joaquin Antonio, donning a dapper royal blue velvet suit jacket, easily standing out from the rest of the pack – which opted for the traditional black-and-white look.
