Mark Cuban lays out ‘Infrastructure 2.0’ plan to revitalize economy after coronavirus subsides

Billionaire entrepreneur, television personality and Dallas Mevericks owner Mark Cuban told “The Ingraham Angle” Thursday that he sees a way for America to bounce back from the economic recession caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Cuban predicted that the American economy will go through a “reset” once the Chinese-native virus has subsided.

“I don’t know when we’re going to get from America 1.0 to America 2.0, but we will get there. And what needs to happen is we have to realize that we are the most entrepreneurial country in the world,” he said.

CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK STATE BY STATE

“Somebody has a vision out there of what we are going to look like on the other side and when we look back in five years, we are going to realize that there are five or ten or 25 amazing companies that were started that just changed the world and lead us through all of this to a brighter future.”

Cuban echoed President Trump’s sentiment that America must wean itself off economic reliance on China, noting that pharmaceutical companies manufacture many of their drugs overseas.

However, he added that there is nothing wrong with envisioning an infrastructure plan that relies more on robotics and artificial intelligence than the industries of the past and the idea that assembly line manufacturing is the way to guarantee widespread employment in trades.

“First thing we need to do is start investing in the future of manufacturing — not to try to recreate what we did in the past, but looking toward robotics and software and automation and AI in such a way that we can just dominate that area,” Cuban said.

“A lot of people are concerned that if we don’t do it the old way and have manufacturing lines, we won’t have enough employment, but there is so much intellectual capacity here that I think really we can take robotics to a level where we bring back almost all that manufacturing and create a surplus of jobs.

“When we look at an infrastructure bill,” Cuban went on, “I truly believe it’s got to be ‘Infrastructure 2.0’ where we focus not just on redoing streets and roads and bridges, but focus on robotics and future technologies so we can define and take over in the future.”

Dr. Mehmet Oz joined “Hannity” Thursday to react to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio‘s advisory that New Yorkers wear face coverings while outside to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

“Well, a scarf’s not going to be as good as a surgical mask and that won’t be as good as a N95 mask. But there’s a re-thinking around masks, in part because we realize that the virus doesn’t go deep in your lungs,” Oz told host Sean Hannity. “It probably inserts itself right at the very tip of your nose.

“Imagine little doors there, which are where the cells’ … receptors can accept the virus. The virus is a key and it unlocks those doors and goes in,” he added. “Older people have more of those doors than younger people. That’s why they get more of the infection, we believe.”

CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK STATE BY STATE

“Wearing of any kind of facial covering could… block the larger droplets from getting into your nose,” Oz went on. “So although culturally, we’ve had an aversion to wearing masks, certainly if you’re sick, you should wear something over your face, getting a covering of some type to block the fluid.”

Earlier Thursday, de Blasio urged New Yorkers to cover their nose and mouth when they leave the house, reversing previous guidance that said only those who are sick or caring for the sick should wear masks.

“We’re advising New Yorkers to wear a face covering when you go outside and near other people,” de Blasio told reporters. “It can be a scarf, it can be something you create at home, it can be a bandana.”

“The problem with cloth masks [is it] doesn’t really protect you as well as you’d like to,” Oz said. “You get a false sense of security, and if you play with it all the time, you actually touch your fingers to your eye. It’s better than nothing but not a ton better than nothing.”

Hannity also pressed Oz on why New York state still has restrictions in place on prescribing hydroxychloroquine. Under an executive order issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week, doctors are prohibited from prescribing the anti-malarial drugs outside of state-approved clinical trials or Food and Drug Administration-approved uses.

“In China, they have a randomized trial. Everyone says it’s very small, but … I say the opposite. Even despite the small numbers, they got statistical, significantly improved results with reduction of fevers, reduction of the cough, improvement of CT scans showing less pneumonia, significant statistically, [a] less than 1 in 100 chance in two of those cases that it could just be random,” Oz said.

“So even with a small number, we’re seeing evidence we need a large trial. Everyone agrees with that.”

Fox News’ Morgan Phillips contributed to this article.

Former ESPN host and vocal Trump critic Jemele Hill blasted New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft for being friends with the president despite his efforts to combat the coronavirus outbreak.

Kraft, a longtime ally of President Trump, oversaw a shipment of roughly 1.7 million N95 masks from China using the Patriots’ private plane. But Hill condemned the NFL team owner for his association with the commander in chief.

“This is where I remind people that Robert Kraft is friends with Donald Trump and gave to his campaign. It’s incredible the Kraft family is doing this, but hope they understand their money helped empower their ‘friend,'” Hill tweeted in reaction to the news.

The Atlantic staff writer doubled down on her comments against Kraft in response to critics on Twitter.

After one Twitter user asked her if it was “necessary” to make such political attacks, Hill replied, “Yes it is necessary. If we don’t critically think about how we got here, we will be back here again.”

“If you consider facts divisive, oh well. But maybe these owners and billionaires need to better understand that just as their money can do a good deed, it can cause also cause irreparable damage,” Hill told another Twitter user.

The controversial sports pundit later added, “Nowhere did I say he shouldn’t do it. Nowhere did I say the gesture wasn’t needed. Politics aren’t a game. Bad policies ruins lives. Bad leadership, as we’ve seen, literally kills people.”

Carrying more than a million N95 masks, the New England Patriots private plane touched down in the U.S. Thursday, returning from China to deliver protective gear for frontline workers battling the coronavirus outbreak in Massachusetts and other hard-hit states.

The tightly coordinated mission reportedly overcame regulatory hurdles just to get permission to land in China, where the crew was told to remain on the plane while people on the ground loaded the cargo.

“I’ve never seen so much red tape in so many ways and obstacles that we had to overcome,” team owner Robert Kraft told the Wall Street Journal.

The jet had only a three-hour window to accept the supplies and took off with just 3 minutes to spare, the paper reported.

White House senior advisor Jared Kushner rebuffed a reporter’s question about a claim that he is operating a “shadow task force” on the federal coronavirus response from within the White House.

Kushner, 39, who is married to Ivanka Trump, smiled briefly as the reporter said the term “shadow task force” and responded that Vice President Mike Pence has asked him to join the on-the-level task force that features Drs. Deborah Birx and Anthony Fauci.

A reporter, identified by another journalist as NBC News’ Geoff Bennett, asked Kushner whether he is aware of “reports … [citing] unnamed White House officials have described your role as being something of running a shadow task force.”

Bennett then asked what Kushner’s “role” and “qualifications” are for the alleged role — which was the subject of a Washington Post story last month.

Kushner calmly rebuffed his question and implicitly expressed doubt about the veracity of his sources.

“If some people are talking to you, that means they’re probably not informed as to what is going on,” the former New Jersey real estate developer and investor said.

Kushner said he speaks with Pence upwards of 10 times a day, and that he has been involved in various different projects.

As Kushner departed the lectern, President Trump leaned in toward to microphone to tell the reporter that the claims about Kushner come from “fake sources.”

“Or they don’t exist,” he added. “Most of these sources don’t exist — they’re fake sources. … I’ve read about it for a long time — I’ve been reading about it — fake sources.”

Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House coronavirus task force, told Fox News Thursday that initial data about the coronavirus outbreak from China left U.S. officials unable to properly prepare for when the virus made its way to the U.S.

“The bottom line is we didn’t know how contagious it was,” Brix told Martha MacCallum during a special Fox News digital town hall event. “And I think when you make misassumptions around contagion early on, then you don’t prepare in the way that you should prepare for the level of contagion that this COVID-19 exhibits.”

THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK STATE BY STATE

MacCallum had asked Birx about evidence that the Chinese deliberately downplayed the scale and virulence of the coronavirus, which originated in the city of Wuhan late last year.

Birx recounted working on countering the HIV epidemic in Africa when the virus broke out and watching COVID-19 data coming in from China.

“I think when we looked at the profile, first there was a question about human-to-human transmission — that’s really key because it stops with that first set of transmission,” Dr. Birx said. “So there was that first question, and I think when you’re in the midst of an epidemic, it is hard for you to be testing at a level that you need to to really look for those asymptomatic cases and really look for those people with mild disease.

“So now we’re finding out that most of the reporting was around very severe cases.”

Birx added that because the early data was produced by China during a “very difficult situation” officials there were not fully measuring asymptomatic or mild cases.

“In that case,” she said, “that may be a significant portion of the epidemic, and so we didn’t know how it was spreading.”

The Trump campaign challenged Twitter on Thursday over its update policies by sharing a manipulated video of former Vice President Joe Biden calling the coronavirus a “hoax.”

For weeks, the Trump campaign has blasted the Biden campaign after it released an attack ad accusing President Trump of calling the growing outbreak a “hoax” during a campaign rally when he was actually comparing the outrage fueled by his political opponents over the Russia investigation and the Ukraine scandal, which he referred to as “hoaxes.”

Supporters of the president have accused Twitter of setting a double standard after the platform labeled a clip posted by White House social media director Dan Scavino “manipulated” that showed Biden saying “we can only reelect Donald Trump” out of context but left the Biden ad of Trump alone.

CALIFORNIA GOV NEWSOM TELLS CNN TRUMP HAS BEEN ‘RESPONSIVE’ TO STATE’S NEEDS: ‘I’D BE LYING’ TO SAY OTHERWISE

That prompted the Trump campaign to share an edited audio clip of Biden saying “the coronavirus is a hoax.”

“The media is giving a pass to a pro-Biden TV ad that doctors and deceptively edits audio of President Trump, even though every independent fact checker said President Trump DID NOT call the coronavirus a hoax. Joe Biden, on the other hand? This sounds authentic…” the “Trump War Room” tweeted.

The Biden campaign quickly condemned the video, calling it “wildly irresponsible.”

“Disinformation and deceptively manipulated media have no place in our public discourse, and must not be tolerated in this campaign. The Trump campaign should take this video down, and if they won’t, Twitter should remove it immediately,” Biden national press secretary TJ Ducklo said.

Following an inquiry, Twitter informed the Trump campaign that the clip “will not be labeled under our synthetic and manipulated media policy.”

“It’s clearer than ever that Twitter is not equipped to police political videos. If it is going to attempt to, it must begin to enforce the rules transparently, fairly, and equally. Regardless of Twitter’s arbitrary and ineffective rules, splicing video or audio together to make it appear as though someone said something that they never actually said should be out of bounds,” Trump campaign spokesperson Matt Wolking told Fox News.

He said, “In that spirit, we will voluntarily take down our video of Joe Biden saying, ‘The coronavirus is a hoax’ once the Biden campaign, its super PAC Unite the Country, and supporting groups Fellow Americans and Priorities USA take down their deceptively edited and doctored videos of President Trump. Until then, turnabout is fair play.”

Special Report” anchor Bret Baier told “Bill Hemmer Reports” Thursday it is unlikely that North Korea has just one case of coronavirus, and called China’s reported figures “suspect.”

China’s officially reported death rate from the virus has held at around 4.1 percent for the past several weeks, according to Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins University, while Germany’s reported death rate is at 1.2 percent, the U.S. rate is at 2.2 percent, Iran’s reported rate is at 6.4 percent, and hard-hit Italy reports a death rate of 11.9 percent.

“They are suspect,” Baier said of China’s figures, noting that White House task force member Dr. Deborah Birx has said China’s reported figures are smaller than projected.

“It’s not the only country that is doing that,” Baier added. “Russia’s numbers are really skewed. North Korea said they had one case and I don’t think that’s accurate. Iran[‘s data is] very skeptical as well.”

Baier also noted that President Trump has appeared to soften his rhetoric about China in recent days, having made a point until recently of calling coronavirus the “Chinese virus.”

Recently, Trump’s language has been somewhat more subdued, and he has spoken openly about having a warm relationship with the country’s president, Xi Jinping.

“It’s interesting to listen to the presidentkind of dial back his rhetoric on China,” Baier said. “I wonder whether that has something to do with other conversations or other things going on but this story about China and the origin of this virus is a very big element of this.”

Labor Secretary Eugene Scalia told “Bill Hemmer Reports” Thursday that skyrocketing unemployment numbers due to self-imposed shutdowns of businesses and commerce caused by the coronavirus pandemic were “especially difficult” to stomach.

“We had such a strong economy for such a long time with record low unemployment and rising wages,” said Scalia, son of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. “So it makes it especially jarring and especially difficult. It is a little different than past bad economic numbers that we are seeing because it’s self-imposed.”

Scalia added that although the massive slump in the economy is happening under highly abnormal circumstances, it doesn’t change the pain millions of Americans are feeling.

“I don’t want to speculate where we are,” he said of employment figures. “We will put out an economic report tomorrow but that will show just the first part of March so we won’t really have a feel for the impact of the stay-at-home orders.”

However, Scalia said the Labor Department has issued more tenable rules for unpaid leave and similar benefits during the crisis, and added that that President Trump’s approval of direct payments to most Americans should ease the pain a little.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has said he hopes the checks will be in the mail within a few weeks.

Host Bill Hemmer asked Scalia whether the economy will rebound quickly (a so-called “V-shaped recovery”) or whether any recovery will be more drawn out and therefore worse for the long-term economy.

“I think the V is possible but it depends substantially on how seriously people take the guidance that the president and health authorities are giving on [social] distancing,” said Scalia.

Ian Bremmer: World Health Organization ‘carrying a lot of water’ for China during coronavirus pandemic

Political scientist Ian Bremmer joined the “Fox News Rundown” podcast Thursday to discuss China’s lack of transparency during the coronavirus pandemic and the role of the World Health Organization.

CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK STATE-BY-STATE

“The WHO has been carrying a lot of water for China because they want access and they want the funding,” Bremmer said of China’s initial denial that the coronavirus could be spread by human-to-human contact. “And there is a difference here. I mean, there’s no moral equivalence with the United States government. We may have our own propaganda, but we don’t actually tell members of NGOs and … international government organizations that if they don’t carry water for the U.S., that’s it, it’s over for them.”

Bremmer lamented the lack of unity surrounding the crisis, both inside the United States and around the world.

“You know, after 9/11 and after 2008, the United States took the lead. Allies followed us. The Russians and the Chinese followed us, too,” Bremmer said. “In 2020, it’s by far the biggest crisis. We don’t have our act together politically in the U.S. Our allies are not following us and the Chinese are actively undermining an effort to try to respond effectively. That is a very serious issue.”

The political scientist predicted that life would be very different in America until a vaccine for the virus is created, as well as that business would transform “dramatically.”

“There is no question we’re going to restart the economy. But until we have a vaccine that works, people aren’t going to be comfortable getting on a middle seat and taking their kids to Disneyland,” Bremmer said. “They’re not going to feel comfortable [enough] to go into a sporting arena with 50,000 people to watch some college football. They’re not going to feel comfortable going out to a bar or a rock concert or their favorite local restaurant. And so I think it would take a long time.”
