Ed Henry challenges Dem lawmaker on Trump impeachment push in fiery exchange

Fox News correspondent Ed Henry challenged a top Democratic lawmaker Friday on his party’s decision to move forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.

Henry asked House Armed Services Committee Member John Garamendi, D-Calif., on “The Story” why Democrats should bring such a motion forward if all of the facts surrounding Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have not yet been borne out.

“You’re hanging this though, on the idea that there should be impeachment here, on second-hand information from a whistleblower,” Henry said.

Garamendi responded, saying the whistleblower’s account is a good basis for the Democrats’ probe.

“That leads us to the investigations that are surely going to take place,” he said.

TRUMP SLAMS MEDIA AS ‘CROOKED AS HELL’ AMID UKRAINE PHONE CALL CONTROVERSY

The whistleblower clearly identifies… the kind of people that he talked to,” Garamendi said. “And apparently, this is an assumption based upon the written testimony from the inspector general, that the inspector general collaborated the information that the whistleblower brought forth — so the inspector general surely must’ve talked to one or more of those people.”

Henry, however, further pressed the lawmaker on opening an impeachment investigation prior to receiving a first-hand account of the call.

“Shouldn’t you have had these facts and not had assumptions before you actually move ahead with an impeachment inquiry?” he asked.

Garamendi assured Henry the facts in the case “will be forthcoming” — calling the Ukraine matter “clearly a shakedown” later in his interview.

HOUSE COMMITTEES SUBPOENA POMPEO FOR UKRAINE DOCUMENTS AS PART OF IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY

“It’s a very simple process now to bring into the hearing, under oath, the people with whom the whistleblower communicated.”

In response, Henry repeated his question.

“Shouldn’t you have had the facts in this case before you moved in ‘full-steam-ahead’?”

Garamendi said the Ukraine situation is just the latest of several matters that would lead to a probe into Trump.

He said the Mueller report on the Russia investigation suggested an “effort by the president to obstruct justice,” though he admitted that former Special Counsel Robert Mueller did a “very bad job of explaining what he had found.”

“We’ve also held hearings on the Emoluments issue,” Garamendi added, referencing the Emoluments Clause in the Constitution, which prohibits federal officials from accepting benefits from foreign or state governments without congressional approval.

Returning to the subject of the Ukraine matter, Garamendi said the call with Zelensky over the summer had “more to [it] than just a nice ‘howdy-doody’ call.”

‘Suck it up!’: ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ author blasts interviewer over Trump comparisons

Westlake Legal Group handmaids-tale-hulu 'Suck it up!': 'Handmaid's Tale' author blasts interviewer over Trump comparisons Sam Dorman fox-news/shows/the-handmaids-tale fox-news/media fox-news/entertainment/genres/books fox news fnc/media fnc ee1616b6-d297-51d2-a45e-f78dabb8a237 article

Margaret Atwood, the author of the dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” blasted an interviewer who tried to compare Atwood’s fictional land of Gilead — where women are property and forced to bear children — to the United States under President Trump.

In an article published this week, Esquire’s literary editor, Amy Grace Lloyd, suggested the Trump administration has purged people like the totalitarian regime in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

“Different. For the moment you and I are not in danger of getting arrested by the NKVD,” said Atwood, referring to the Soviet police force that carried out mass arrests and executions under dictator Josef Stalin.

More from Media

“You think Gilead is bad or that the TV series is too violent? Look up the NKVD,” Atwood added. “It’s important to have that perspective. People are saying Trump is re-creating Gilead. That’s not true. If it were, we’d not be having this conversation. He’s not even a particularly Gileadean figure, more like a [Babylonian king] Nebuchadnezzar of the right. That guy went mad.”

ELISABETH MOSS SAYS IT’S ‘APT’ TO COMPARE ANTI-ABORTION LAWS TO ‘HANDMAID’S TALE’S’ DYSTOPIAN SOCIETY

When Lloyd responded by complaining about “divisiveness being promoted” in the U.S., Atwood told her to “suck it up!”

“Why are you so afraid?” Atwood asked. “No one is going to kill you right now. Anybody banging down your door? What you should be doing is figuring out who to vote for in the next election. Which candidate is going to take you the farthest he or she can from Gilead? Panic isn’t helpful.”

Since the Hulu show based on Atwood’s novel premiered in April 2017, liberals have repeatedly compared Republicans and their policies to those of the villains in the story. At the 2018 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, for example, comedienne Michelle Wolf compared then-White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to Aunt Lydia, the brutal overseer of Gilead’s female captives. A CNN documentary similarly drew comparisons to Atwood’s story — as did Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., when she spoke out against Alabama’s restrictive abortion law.

A group of women also dressed up in the characteristic “Handmaid’s Tale” uniform — a red cloak with a white hood — while protesting abortion restrictions and during Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings.

Both Atwood and Elisabeth Moss, who plays the main character in Hulu’s adaptation, have suggested the story bore a resemblance to events in the United States.

President Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign manager reacted Friday to what he called “amazing” fundraising numbers since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement of a formal impeachment inquiry.

Brad Parscale told Brian Kilmeade on “The Brian Kilmeade Show” that the moment Democrats made their intentions official, Americans began “voting with their wallet.”

“I think one of the most amazing things is just the fundraising we’ve had in the last 48 hours,” he said. “As soon as they started this attack, I think Americans and Republicans and supporters of the president all over the country — they started voting with their wallet. And, this is the one thing they can do right now — they can donate.”

MARK LEVIN SLAMS ‘ROGUE’ CIA WHISTLEBLOWER, CLAIMS NO FIRST-HAND SOURCE FILED A COMPLAINT

On Wednesday, Parscale reported that the Trump 2020 campaign and the Republican National Committee had raised a total of $5 million within 24 hours of Pelosi’s impeachment inquiry announcement, with donations coming from all 50 states. On Friday, Parscale trumpeted that 50,000 new donors had given to the campaign over the previous two days.

In addition, the president’s son Eric Trump tweeted Thursday night that his father’s reelection campaign had raised $8.5 million “in small dollar donations” over the previous 48 hours.

“A big thank-you to Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats,” Eric remarked.

JON VOIGHT: DRIVE TO IMPEACH TRUMP A ‘CRIME,’ A ‘DISGRACE’

In his interview with Parscale, Kilmeade asked whether he has any concern about the impeachment inquiry.

The campaign manager rejected the idea.

“I’m pretty confident,” Parscale said, pointing to a statement the campaign previously released Wednesday after a memorandum of a phone conversation between Trump and the president of Ukraine was made public.

“Because of their pure hatred for President Trump, desperate Democrats and the salivating media already had determined their mission: take out the President,” the statement read. “The fact is that the President wants to fight the corruption in Washington, where the Bidens, the Clintons, and other career politicians have abused their power for personal gain for decades. The facts prove the President did nothing wrong.”

“This is just another hoax from Democrats and the media, contributing to the landslide re-election of President Trump in 2020.”

Parscale told Kilmeade that Trump should continue to perform his duties as usual.

“He’s doing exactly what the people sent him there to do,” he said. “The Democrats just know they can’t beat him in 2020, so they want to try to use anything they can and lie and cheat to defeat [him].”

Schiff gets rave review from Sunny Hostin, other ‘View’ hosts pan ‘parody’ of Ukraine transcript

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., got conflicting reviews from “The View” after he interrogated Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire during a Thursday hearing.

In the hearing’s aftermath, Schiff faced a wave of backlash for parodying the transcript of the intensely scrutinized conversation between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July.

“I have a favor I want from you,” Schiff said while appearing to read from a piece of paper during the hearing. “And I’m going to say this only seven times, so you better listen good. I want you to make up dirt on my political opponent, understand? Lots of it, on this and on that.”

Schiff later said his comments were a parody and suggested that it wasn’t his fault that critics failed to recognize that.

TRUMP DEMANDS SCHIFF RESIGN OVER ‘PARODY’ READING OF UKRAINE CALL: ‘HE GOT CAUGHT’

Co-host Sunny Hostin came to Schiff’s defense on Friday, saying it was “one small parody” and suggesting it was an appropriate way of portraying Trump as a mafia don.

“I didn’t read it as a joke at all, actually, because when I read the transcript, it sounded a lot like some of the wiretaps that I listened to when I was a federal prosecutor. And remember that Adam Schiff was a federal prosecutor — and I think what he was likening it to was when a mafia don says, ‘I’m asking you for a favor, I’m going to give you an offer you can’t refuse,'” she said.

She also praised Schiff as “cogent,” “concise,” and “fantastic.” “Adam Schiff is the man!” she exclaimed. “View” co-host Meghan McCain had a radically different take and described Schiff’s comments as incredibly inappropriate given the situation.

“I think if you have to clarify it’s a parody, you’ve done it wrong,” she said. “I also think, tonally, when you’re opening up the investigation into impeaching our president about possible trades for information for money, this is not a time for parody at all.”

McCain went on to say she couldn’t “stand” Schiff and thought someone else should be spearheading the House’s investigation into Trump.

“I think he’s the worst kind of partisan in Washington,” she said.

“The View” co-host Joy Behar suggested on Friday that Schiff’s stunt wasn’t funny, stating that sometimes people should leave joking for comedians.

Fox News’ Adam Shaw contributed to this report.

Dish customers lose FOX, FS1 amid carriage dispute as NFL, MLB seasons heat up

Dish subscribers will miss critical sporting events as the satellite and streaming service blacked out FOX amid a carriage dispute.

FOX-owned cable channels FS1, FS2, Big Ten Network, Fox Soccer Plus and Fox Deportes are also dark for Dish customers. FOX launched a website dedicated to informing viewers on the blackout that impacts 17 markets across 23 states plus Washington D.C.

“DISH is at it again, choosing to drop leading programming as a negotiating tactic regardless of the impact on its own customers. DISH elected to drop FOX networks in an effort to coerce us to agree to outrageous demands. While we regret this is DISH’s preferred approach to negotiating, we remind our loyal viewers that the FOX services are widely available through every other major television provider,” FOX wrote on the site.

CNN HAS BAD WEEK AMID APRIL RYAN, CHRIS CUOMO AND DON LEMON NEWS: ‘IT WAS QUITE EMBARRASSING’

Dish issued a press release outlining its side of the story and urging FOX to focus on “reaching a fair deal.”

The blackout comes at an unfortunate time for viewers, as FOX heads into a weekend filled with marquee college football games, pivotal Major League Baseball games and Week 4 of the NFL season.

FOX’s Week 4 NFL games include the Washington Redskins at New York Giants, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs at Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Los Angeles Rams.

FS1 and FOX will continue to carry MLB playoff games for the duration of the month, ending with exclusive coverage of the World Series.

The Rams visit the Seattle Seahawks on FOX’s “Thursday Night Football” and WWE’s highly anticipated “Friday Night SmackDown” also debuts on FOX next week.

In addition to the live events, Dish customers will miss hit shows such as “The Masked Singer,” “Fox News Sunday,” “Empire,” “9-1-1,” “The Simpsons” and “The Resident.”

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani slammed Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, for what he called a weak response to the Ukraine phone call whistleblower’s complaint against President Trump.

Giuliani said Thursday on “The Ingraham Angle” that Romney — the 2012 Republican presidential nominee — is still upset he lost his election, while Trump won his own White House bid — as he rejected the former Massachusetts’ governor’s reaction to the Ukraine news.

On Sunday, Romney tweeted, “If the President asked or pressured Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rival, either directly or through his personal attorney, it would be troubling in the extreme. Critical for the facts to come out.”

MITT ROMNEY CALLS FOR ‘FACTS TO COME OUT’ AFTER UKRAINE SCANDAL

Giuliani dismissed Romney’s concern.

“I don’t know, maybe he is as confused about this as he was when [CNN debate moderator] Candy Crowley contradicted him and his campaign fell apart,” Giuliani said.

At a 2012 debate with then-President Barack Obama in Hempstead, N.Y., Romney questioned whether Obama had called the Benghazi attack an “act of terror” rather than “spontaneous” violence that grew out of a protest against an anti-Islam video. Crowley then intervened: “He did in fact, sir … call it an act of terror.”

However, after the debate, Crowley conceded that Mitt Romney was “right” on the broader point — that the administration for days insisted it was a spontaneous act.

“He was right in the main. I just think he picked the wrong word,” she said at the time.

On “The Ingraham Angle,” Giuliani continued in his reaction to Romney’s tweet.

“I wouldn’t count on him. And he’s bitter about Donald Trump.”

“Look, Mitt, Trump did what you couldn’t do. Trump has an ability to relate to people — you don’t,” he said.

Laura Ingraham called out Democrats Thursday for their continued pursuit of impeaching President Trump and accused them of making their focus “punishment” and payback over his election.

“With the election of Trump, the anger simmering beneath the surface bubbled over and became the driver of almost everything the Democrats did and said,” Ingraham said on “The Ingraham Angle.”

Ingraham said she believes the Mueller report and Russia investigation were created to “punish” Trump and the American people who voted for him by the Democratic Party.

“That entire crooked fiasco was born out of an almost insane desire to punish Trump for winning and then believe it or not to punish you, the American people for electing a man who vowed to drain the swamp,” Ingraham said.

The host argued that Democrats and unhappy that Americans are happy and prospering under Trump.

“The happier you are more infuriated they are,” Ingraham said. “And now, this fury and anger has brought us all to the brink of impeachment. Because the Democrat impulse, again, to punish their enemies has only gotten stronger over time.

Ingraham argued compared Democrats desire to “punish” to cancer and warned that Democrats in the capitol need to comprehend how America works.

“Washington has got to learn once and for all. They work for us, not the other way around,” Ingraham pointed out.

“Washington has got to learn once and for all. They work for us, not the other way around,” Ingraham pointed out.

Des Moines Register reporter out for old racist tweets after digging up tweets of Iowan philanthropist

The Des Moines Register announced Thursday that the reporter who found years-old offensive tweets by a local man who raised $1 million for charity is no longer with the paper.

The paper’s executive editor Carol Hunter published an op-ed on Thursday night and informed readers that Aaron Calvin, the journalist behind the controversial profile about 24-year-old Carson King, is “no longer with the Register.”

Social media found past offensive tweets on his own Twitter account after the story was published. Before locking his Twitter account, Calvin issued an apology for his own tweets.”Hey just wanted to say that I have deleted previous tweets that have been inappropriate or insensitive. I apologize for not holding myself to the same standards as the Register holds others.”

Hunter wrote that Register employees “must review and agree to a company-wide social media policy that includes a statement that employees ‘do not post comments that include discriminatory remarks, harassment, threats of violence or similar content.'”

“We took appropriate action because there is nothing more important in journalism than having readers’ trust,” she wrote.

Hunter, who previously released a statement on Tuesday night in response to the outcry the piece received, further explained the rationale that went behind the decision of including information about the tweets King made when he was 16 years old.

“Our initial stories drew so much interest that we decided to write a profile of King, to help readers understand the young man behind the handmade sign and the outpouring of donations to the children’s hospital. The Register had no intention to disparage or otherwise cast a negative light on King,” Hunter wrote. “In doing backgrounding for such a story, reporters talk to family, friends, colleagues or professors. We check court and arrest records as well as other pertinent public records, including social media activity. The process helps us to understand the whole person.”

“As journalists, we have the obligation to look into matters completely, to aid the public in understanding the people we write about and in some cases to whom money is donated.”

The editor then addressed the disputed timeline regarding the Register’s reporting on King’s tweets and Busch Light’s decision to sever ties with King. Hunter went on to claim that the news coverage surrounding the tweets had nothing to do with the beer company’s pullout.

“As it turned out, our decision-making process [of including the tweets in the profile] was preempted when King held his evening news conference to discuss his tweets and when Busch Light’s parent company announced it would sever its future ties with King,” Hunter continued. “King told us later that Busch Light representatives had called him early Tuesday afternoon to say the company was severing any future relationship. Neither the Register nor King had notified the company about the tweets. Busch Light made its decision independently of any news coverage on the tweets.”

Hunter’s op-ed drew even further outrage for not including an apology to King. Others called for the firing of the editors behind the piece.

King became a TV sensation last weekend after he held up a sign at a football game asking people to donate money to him. He requested that they donate the funds through Venmo so he could buy his “supply” of Busch Light.

He went on to raise more than $1 million and donated the money to the University of Iowa’s Stead Children’s Hospital. Busch Light and Venmo pledged to match King’s fundraising efforts.

The profile, however, included a “routine background check” of King’s social media history, which included two racist jokes that dated back to 2012 when King was a 16-year-old high school student, “one comparing black mothers to gorillas and another making light of black people killed in the Holocaust.”

King was asked about the tweets and immediately expressed remorse.

“That’s not something that I’m proud of at all,” King told the Register on Tuesday.

He appeared on local TV stations to apologize and said, “I am embarrassed and stunned to reflect on what I thought was funny when I was 16 years old.”

Despite the uproar the Register created for including those tweets, King defended the paper and its reporter.

“The Des Moines Register has been nothing but kind in all of their coverage, and I appreciate the reporter pointing out the post to me,” King tweeted. “I want everyone to understand that this was my decision to publicly address the posts and apologize. I believe that is the right thing to do.”

In a statement to Fox News, King expressed that he didn’t want “any of this negativity to hinder with the amazing work everyone has done for the hospital.”
