Tony Robbins says he’s suing BuzzFeed as outlet reports sexual assault claim

Famed self-help guru Tony Robbins said on Friday that he intends on suing BuzzFeed after the digital news outlet published a report about an alleged sexual assault by Robbins that took place decades ago.

In the latest of a series of negative reports about Robbins that had ranged from his alleged use of racial slurs to sexual misconduct, BuzzFeed News reported that Robbins, 59, was accused of sexually assaulting a minor at a summer camp in 1985 when he was 25 years old.

BuzzFeed News spoke to the accuser, two eyewitnesses, and “dozens” of others who recalled their experience at SuperCamp, which was described as “an elite summer camp in Southern California” where Robbins had been invited as a guest speaker.

The accuser, who BuzzFeed News identifies only as “Elle,” says she was under 18 years old when Robbins asked her to join him on a walk in a wooded area, where he, according to her lawyers, “forced himself upon her- kissing her and groping her breasts in a prolonged sexual assault.”

One eyewitness told BuzzFeed News that she saw Robbins “kissing a camper with his arms wrapped around her”  and another recalled him “pinning her arms back as he kissed her forcefully.”

SELF-HELP GURU TONY ROBBINS ACCUSED OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT

Several campers and staffers reportedly were told about the incident at the time. One of the former campers provided BuzzFeed News with her contemporaneous diary where she wrote Robbins “basically started to molest” a girl and that it was a “completely perverted thing to do.”

Lawyers for Robbins acknowledged that there was a “situation” that was a “non-issue” and told BuzzFeed News, “No sexual assault happened. Period.”

Now, Robbins is speaking out himself in a piece he says “BuzzFeed doesn’t want you to read.”

In an op-ed published on Medium.com, Robbins slammed Buzzfeed as an entertainment media company that “disguises” itself as a news organization and asked: “who is watching the watchdogs?”

“For this reason, I am now suing BuzzFeed following a premeditated and malicious campaign against me and my life’s work,” Robbins wrote. “In a series of articles this year, BuzzFeed falsely accused me of abusing my position and making inappropriate advances toward employees and event attendees as well as berating abuse victims at my seminars. Those stories were filled with falsehoods and many people actively spoke out against BuzzFeed in the immediate aftermath.”

TONY ROBBINS APOLOGIZES FOR #METOO COMMENTS

He cited an example of how BuzzFeed “inaccurately” labeled two sources as “victims,” who apparently refuted the “false reporting.”

Regarding the latest report, Robbins alleged that one of the sources contacted his team and said that he had “felt” one of the BuzzFeed reporters “had an agenda, was driving a preconceived narrative and trying to manipulate him into confirming the story she told him.”

“While the democratic rule of law affords each of us due process, a fair trial, and lawful standards for the proper introduction of evidence, the same rules unfortunately don’t hold true in today’s wild west of digital information sharing and rampant ‘fake news,'” the celebrity guru continued. “More and more people are coming to see the media not as referees but as active players in the larger game of agenda pushing. [sic] Credible media demand transparency, but online tabloid media disguising themselves as “news organizations” too often remain secretive about their sources, techniques and their own agendas. The result: people are turning away from journalism and questioning its once-important role as society’s trusted watchdog.”

“One day, the honorable craft of journalism will return to reporting fact-based news, not assassinating targets for entertainment purposes and clickable audience building to drive revenue… Until this happens, I simply ask: ‘Who will watch the watchdogs?'”

In a statement to Fox News, BuzzFeed Director of Communications Matt Mittenthal defended the reporting, saying, “BuzzFeed News’ series of reports on Tony Robbins are based on hundreds of interviews, audio recordings, and documentary evidence. Our latest story about an alleged sexual assault is based on the accounts of dozens of people, as well as contemporaneous journal entries. The evidence speaks for itself, and we stand by our rigorous reporting.”

‘View’ co-hosts clash over Will Hurd defending Trump: ‘He must be deaf’

The ladies on “The View” had a contentious back-and-forth on Friday as they discussed Rep. Will Hurd’s defense of President Trump during Thursday’s public impeachment hearing.

“Well, is he deaf? He must be deaf,” co-host Joy Behar said after the show played a clip of Hurd, R-Texas, who cautioned against taking impeachment lightly, and said he hadn’t heard evidence “proving the president committed bribery or extortion.”

At one point in the conversation, Behar asked co-host Meghan McCain, “What about the Constitution?” She was referring to the document’s prohibition against bribery, which Democrats say Trump engaged in when pushing for Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.

“First of all, I have a copy of the Constitution on my nightstand,” McCain shot back, “so, please don’t talk to me about the Constitution.”

MEGHAN MCCAIN UNLOADS ON JOY BEHAR, MEDIA, SAYING THEY’RE NAIVE’ IF THEY THINK HEARINGS WILL BRING DOWN TRUMP

Co-host Sunny Hostin was “shocked” by Hurd’s comments and argued they said more about the congressman than the evidence surrounding impeachment.

“It tells me that he is complicit, the Republican Party has enabled this president, continued to enable this president,” she said. “That’s not fair,” McCain replied before claiming that Hostin was “slandering a CIA agent.”

More from Media

When Hostin suggested Hurd defended Trump for his “political future,” McCain pointed out that Hurd was resigning from Congress.

“He heard the evidence clear and simple,” Hostin added of Hurd. “And for him to sit there and say that the evidence has to be overwhelming and that he heard no overwhelming evidence, I want to know which hearings he was sitting at.”

As Hostin received a round of applause, McCain said: “It’s easy to get a cheap applause line here. It just is. And that’s fine — take your cheap applause line.”

“It’s not a cheap applause line, maybe they agree,” Hostin responded. McCain sternly responded by telling Hostin to “let me speak.” “You’ve been speaking a lot,” Hostin shot back. McCain went on to thank Hurd for his service in the CIA.

CNN downplays its own FISA bombshell report, receives minimal on-air coverage

Despite having a major bombshell website report on DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s ongoing probe into the origins of the Russia investigation, CNN bizarrely offered very little coverage of its own exclusive reporting on-air.

CNN first reported that Horowitz had been investigating an FBI official who allegedly altered a document used to obtain a FISA warrant in order to surveil Trump campaign adviser Carter Page during the 2016 election. Horowitz reportedly turned the evidence over to U.S. Attorney John Durham, who has launched a criminal probe in the origins of the Russia investigation.

The Washington Post also verified the reporting.

However, CNN barely promoted its own digital scoop on the network.

After the news broke on “The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” it was completely ignored on “Out Front with Erin Burnett,” “Cuomo Prime Time,” and “CNN Tonight with Don Lemon.” It did, however, receive less than five minutes of coverage towards the end of “Anderson Cooper 360.”

CNN’S CHRIS CUOMO FAILS TO ASK FORMER FBI’S MCCABE, BAKER ABOUT NETWORK’S OWN FISA BOMBSHELL REPORT

What was more puzzling was that after the two hours since CNN broke the news, “Cuomo Prime Time” anchor Chris Cuomo failed to mention his network’s report during a segment that featured former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and former FBI General Counsel James Baker, both who are now CNN contributors but were high-ranking FBI officials when the document used in the FISA application was altered.

Instead, Cuomo, like his network colleagues Erin Burnett and Don Lemon, spent the entire hour covering the ongoing impeachment hearing into President Trump and spoke with McCabe and Baker on how Thursday’s testimony of former National Security Council aide Dr. Fiona Hill “shattered GOP conspiracy theories.”

CNN did not immediately respond to Fox News for comment.

Fox News offered more on-air coverage to CNN’s bombshell report than CNN, appearing on “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” “Hannity,” “The Ingraham Angle,” and “Fox News @ Night w/ Shannon Bream.”

CNN has been on a bizarre streak of downplaying or completely ignoring major headlines, including ABC News’ coverup of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, the Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer scandals that have plagued NBC News, and the allegations of inappropriate relationship with staffers made against Democratic congresswoman Katie Hill, which led to her resignation from Congress earlier this month.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo fails to ask former FBI’s McCabe, Baker about network’s own FISA bombshell report

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo made a stunning omission on Thursday night and failed to ask former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and former FBI General Counsel James Baker about the network’s own report regarding an unnamed FBI official being under criminal investigation by Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz.

CNN first reported that Horowitz had been investigating an FBI official who allegedly altered a document used to obtain a FISA warrant in order to surveil a former Trump campaign adviser during the 2016 election. Horowitz reportedly turned the evidence over to U.S. Attorney John Durham, who has launched a criminal probe in the origins of the Russia investigation.

The Washington Post also verified the reporting.

CNN’S CHRIS CUOMO MOCKED AFTER ATTEMPT TO DISPROVE TRUMP’S PHONE THEORY WITH CALL TO MOM FAILS

However, despite his network breaking the news hours earlier, Cuomo did not mention the report during his entire show Thursday night, most notably, during his sit-down with McCabe and Baker, who are now CNN contributors.

Instead, the “Cuomo Prime Time” anchor spent the entire hour covering the ongoing impeachment hearing into President Trump and spoke with McCabe and Baker on how Thursday’s testimony of former National Security Council aide Dr. Fiona Hill “shattered GOP conspiracy theories.”

McCabe and Baker were still high-ranking officials at the FBI when the FISA application into Page was drafted. Horowitz is set to reveal his findings on the alleged DOJ abuses on December 9.

Cuomo had a rough day during Thursday’s impeachment hearing. He was brutally mocked after his attempt to disprove Trump’s theory about how phones work backfired on live television.

David Holmes, the political counsel at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, testified during Thursday’s impeachment hearing that he overheard a would-be damning phone call between Trump and European Union Ambassador Gordon Sondland. Holmes said he “could hear the president’s voice through the earpiece of the phone,” which was not on speakerphone.

Trump, in real-time, tweeted his skepticism.

“I have been watching people making phone calls my entire life. My hearing is, and has been, great. Never have I been watching a person making a call, which was not on speakerphone, and been able to hear or understand a conversation. I’ve even tried, but to no avail,” Trump tweeted. “Try it live!”

CNN’s Cuomo took the president up on the challenge and called his mother during coverage of the impeachment hearing.

“Let’s just play with that for a second. Mom can you hear me?” Cuomo asked, without receiving a response from his mother.

“I’m with Dana Bash… can you just say hello? Mom? She probably can’t hear me,” Cuomo said as he struggled to hear whether or not his mother could hear him.

Cuomo then put the device on speakerphone.

“Mom, can you hear me?” he asked again.

“I hear you, when you talk to me I hear you,” his mother responded.

The “Cuomo Prime Time” namesake then turned off speakerphone and could no longer hear his mother — just as Trump explained is typically the case.

A frustrated Cuomo then hung up the phone and critics quickly lampooned the moment.

Fox News’ Brian Flood contributed to this report.

Mike Huckabee blasts MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s debate performance: ‘She pretends to be a journalist’

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday that he found something lacking in MSNBC host Rachel Maddow’s performance as a moderator during Wednesday’s MSNBC-Washington Post Democratic presidential debate.

The Republican described Maddow as being overtly opinionated and said she showed a clear anti-Trump bias in some of her questioning.

“Rachel Maddow, first of all, is about as objective as I am,” Huckabee said during an appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”

MARK LEVIN: ADAM SCHIFF IS THE ‘ADMIRAL YAMAMOTO’ OF TRUMP IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDINGS

During the debate, Maddow asked Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., how central President Trump’s alleged “conduct uncovered by this impeachment inquiry” should be to the Democratic presidential contenders’ campaigns.

She also asked Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., if she would try to convince Senate Republicans to convict Trump, if he is impeached by the House, and remove him from office, a sentiment Maddow said Warren has previously espoused.

The “Rachel Maddow Show” host also asked former Vice President Joe Biden about a “potential criminal investigation” against Trump after he leaves the White House.

More from Media

“I don’t pretend to be a journalist — I don’t play one on TV,” Huckabee said. “I know I have a point of view [and] she does too but she pretends to be a journalist.”

He added that if the federal government under a Democratic president decides Trump should be prosecuted, they will have to wait five years to do so.

“By then, a lot of them are going to be so utterly discredited nobody will pay attention,” he claimed.

Host Laura Ingraham added that Democratic candidate Andrew Yang, a New York businessman, claimed the impeachment narrative is not working to advance the Democratic platform in regard to the presidential race.

Huckabee agreed, responding that Democrats appear to hate constitutional principles more than they hold disdain for Trump.

Media’s ‘clumsy handling’ of botched report attributing Obama-era stats to Trump blasted by critics

Several media organizations were forced to make retractions Tuesday after falsely attributing an Obama-era migrant child-detention statistic to President Trump, but critics say the gaffe was handled incorrectly by many other mainstream outlets.

Manfred Nowak, an expert from the U.N. Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, claimed Monday that 100,000 migrant children were detained by the Trump administration and indicated that it was the “world’s highest rate” of detained children.

DEMOCRATIC DEBATE IGNORED NBC’S ‘SERIOUS PROBLEMS’ RELATED TO SEX ASSAULT, HARASSMENT: WOMEN’S GROUP

The following day, however, Nowak acknowledged that the cited number was from 2015 under President Barack Obama. The correction prompted several media outlets – including the Associated Press, Reuters, National Public Radio and Agence France-Presse (AFP) — to completely withdraw their stories containing the original, incorrect information.

“Real journalism is reporting the truth, not covering it up. When the article originally portrayed Trump negatively, it was big news. When the truth came out that Obama was to blame, not Trump, the headline and text should have been corrected, not taken down,” Cornell Law School professor William A. Jacobson told Fox News. “The takedown appears political.”

When the truth came out that Obama was to blame, not Trump, the headline and text should have been corrected, not taken down.”

— William A. Jacobson

In addition to stories being completely withdrawn, the blunder also resulted in tweets condemning Trump being deleted.

DePauw University professor and media critic Jeffrey McCall feels that “correcting erroneous stories is one of the toughest challenges” in journalism because news organizations dislike calling attention to their own errors.

CNN’S DON LEMON CLAIMS HE’S NOT ‘SOME LIBERAL’ DEMOCRAT: ‘I’M NOT A PARTISAN’

“Professionalism demands, however, that reporting mistakes be corrected promptly and with the same amount of profile as the incorrect version of the story. The news-consuming public also deserves an explanation for how the error occurred in the first place,” McCall told Fox News.

An alarming Obama-era migrant child-detention statistic was falsely attributed to President Trump.

McCall noted that the U.N. Global Study received a ton of attention when journalists felt it was damning for the Trump administration.

“It has been interesting to see the varying approaches to how these news outlets have dealt with their original errors,” McCall said. “Simply withdrawing the inaccurate report is not sufficient in serving the public interest.”

McCall explained that “corrected stories need full context for the data report,” including the year the statistics were gathered and the fact that it occurred long before Trump took office.

“The clumsy handling of this story, the original and the largely flimsy follow-ups, seem to fit with the broader media narrative that the Obama years were blissful and the Trump years are riddled with chaos.”

— Jeffrey McCall

“The clumsy handling of this story, the original and the largely flimsy follow-ups, seem to fit with the broader media narrative that the Obama years were blissful and the Trump years are riddled with chaos, when in actuality the problems with child detainees have been going on for some time,” McCall said.

Media Research Center Director Tim Graham called the ordeal an “embarrassing attack-and-retweet tactic” that is “doubly illustrative” of media bias.

“These outlets rushed to promote a study showing President Trump’s immigration policies were horrifying on a global scale, and then when it turned out to be about 2015 and Obama’s immigration policies, they sent their reports into a black hole instead of acknowledging the error the United Nations admitted,” Graham told Fox News.

MSNBC contributor warns about liberal candidates, says ‘sociopath’ beats a ‘socialist’

Republican strategist and MSNBC commentator Steve Schmidt Wednesday evening warned that Democratic presidential candidates that lean to the extreme left may not be able to beat President Trump in 2020.

“I do think there is a danger when you look at some of the ideology that we’ve seen front and center in this field,” Schmidt said during the network’s coverage before the Democratic presidential debate in Atlanta. “In America, a sociopath will beat a socialist seven days a week and twice on Sunday.”

He said to win the presidency a nominee would need to “assemble the broadest, widest possible political coalition” with Democrats, Independents and Republicans.

Schmidt added that impeachment followed by acquittal in the Senate was likely, meaning voters would decide Trump’s fate.

“Nobody should underestimate Donald Trump’s ability to frame an argument, to demagogue an opponent,” he said.

He said if Trump is re-elected in 2020 he would be a “completely lawless and unchecked president who would know that he would be able to survive basically any level of wrongdoing.”

“I have to say, at this point if you’re continuing to say that there was no, as they say, ‘quid pro quo,’ or the president didn’t ask, whether or not it’s impeachable, that again is not up for me to decide, not up for you to decide, that’s up for the Senate to decide and the American people,” Lemon told Cuomo. “But to deny that the president did not do something wrong at this point is… it’s… it’s mental. It is mental.”

He continued, “If you can look at the mountain of evidence and say, ‘Oh, nothing’s wrong, the president didn’t do anything wrong, he’s just rooting out corruption,’ you’ve got a problem because that is not what happened… The problem is you.”

On Tuesday, the anti-Trump anchor declared he’s not “some liberal Democrat” and claimed he isn’t partisan when discussing the impeachment hearings.

“I think on this one, the Republicans are on the wrong side of history, and they are the most hypocritical. I’m not a partisan. I know people think that I’m some liberal Democrat. I’m not. They used to think I was a conservative Republican. I’m not,” Lemon. “But I don’t think the Republicans are serving themselves well.”

Wednesday’s impeachment hearing on Capitol Hill featuring Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union,  was another example of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff orchestrating an unfair and corrupt inquiry process against President Trump, “Life, Liberty & Levin” host Mark Levin said.

“The American system and the American people have never, ever seen a process like this — ever,” the radio host claimed on “The Mark Levin Show” on Westwood One.

“It is thoroughly corrupt and tyrannical — while they’re trying to paint the president as corrupt and tyrannical,” Levin continued.

“The American system and the American people have never, ever seen a process like this — ever. It is thoroughly corrupt and tyrannical.”

TRUMP FIRES BACK AT ‘CORRUPT’ SCHIFF

It appeared Democrats were eager to hear from Sondland because, unlike some previous witnesses, Sondland was appointed directly by Trump himself, Levin noted.

“They’re not even witnesses for all intents and purposes,” he said. “That is, they have no idea what the president of the United States actually said or did because they never spoke with him [and] never met with him and know nothing about him.”

“But Mr. Sondland is different, you see,” Levin added, describing the Democrats’ argument. “He was appointed by Trump — he had many discussions with Trump. He can remember some, he can’t remember others.”

Levin also claimed former President Barack Obama wasn’t held to the same standard in regard to providing sufficient defense resources to Ukraine.

“If Donald Trump had followed the status quo of the prior administration … Ukraine wouldn’t get a penny in offensive military armaments, not a penny, because that was the official policy of the Obama administration, of the John Kerry State Department, in which these longtime State Department employees worked — and I don’t remember them jumping up and down over that.”

In addition, Levin claimed several media pundits commenting on the Sondland testimony weren’t acting like the impartial legal analysts they were cracked up to be.

One analyst, Levin claimed, floated that Trump could be brought up on an obstruction-of-Congress impeachment article because of the testimony thus far.
