Seattle police union leader: ‘Socialist’ city council holding ‘reasonable majority’ hostage

“Socialists” on Seattle’s City Council are holding a “reasonable majority” of residents hostage by threatening to slash police spending by 50 percent, a union leader said Saturday.

“It’s absolutely a travesty,” said Seattle Police Officers Guild President Michael Solan, appearing on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL SEEMS READY TO DEFUND POLICE BY 50 PERCENT

Solan warned that the defund police push in Seattle is “leading the way in how public safety will be conducted from this day forward” nationwide.

Under pressure from city councilors, protesters and dozens of other elected leaders who have demanded that officers dial back their tactics, the police department on Monday removed barricades near its East Precinct building in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, where protesters and riot squads had faced off nightly. Protesters were allowed to march and demonstrate in front of the building, and the night remained peaceful. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

“If our reasonable community across this city, our state, and more importantly, our nation don’t wake up … crime will rise significantly, and over half, if not more, of the police jobs in our city will be eviscerated,” Solan said.

“This is coming into your neighborhood if we don’t wake up and stop this socialist threat immediately.”

The Seattle Times reported Thursday that three council members have thrown their support behind Decriminalize Seattle and King County Equity Now. The paper described Decriminalize Seattle as a coalition inspired by the Black Lives Matter protests that seek police defunding and major reforms aimed at ending systemic racism.

The Times said seven out of the council’s nine members support defunding police. The department’s budget is currently $409 million.

That means there’s enough support on the council to defund police without Democratic Mayor Jenny Durkan’s approval.

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best told “The Jason Rantz Show” on Friday that the council members who support defunding police don’t have a real plan.

“All they have shown us is that they want to reduce the budget by 50 percent. I haven’t seen any real planning in that. And, the real tragedy of doing that is that we will lose 1,100 employees,” she said.

Solan offered a more ominous prediction, saying Seattle will be “plagued with crime” if defunding moves forward.

“As police officers, we’re engaging in this reimagining or re-envisioning police services to our entire city as we must because we serve at the will of the community,” he said.

“But sadly, this socialist city council controlled by a certain group of individuals that have the entire council, if not more importantly our ignored majority, hostage by their political antics, must be stopped.”

Portland, Oregon, authorities are looking how they might reform police in the City of Roses – and ideas include a civilian board of police commissioners or a community-controlled oversight board, according to a local report.

Lawmakers around the country have called for law enforcement reforms since George Floyd, a Black man, died after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes on May 25.

Demands have ranged from reforming police departments with additional training and oversight to defunding or dismantling them entirely.

FLORIDA POLICE DEPARTMENT WILL NOT SEND COPS TO NON-VIOLENT CALLS

In Portland, Democratic City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty is supporting a ballot measure that would replace the city’s police oversight authority with an independent “Community Police Oversight Board,” OregonLive reported.

Currently, the City Auditor’s Office has an independent police review agency that operates separately from the Portland Police Bureau.

The plan Hardesty supports would reportedly give the new board authority to investigate complaints, impose discipline and recommend new policies.

LAS VEGAS POLICE MOVE TO LIMIT NECK RESTRAINT TACTICS

“We need to absolutely blow up the system we have and create one that’s responsive to the community,” the Oregonian quoted her as saying.

Paul Snell, who researches and teaches government and politics courses at the nearby Pacific University, has proposed a nine-member board of police commissioners that would absorb the auditor’s police review department and oversee an inspector general’s office, according to the report. It would also control the police budget, make high-level police hiring decisions and handle or have a say in discipline decisions.

Under such a system, he likened the police chief to a CEO and the commissioners to a board of directors.

Los Angeles, Honolulu and Oakland already have implemented similar commissions.

Portland City Auditor Mary Hull Caballero has proposed granting her police review office additional power and transparency rather than getting rid of it, according to the report.

Her office is hosting a forum on police oversight and reform on July 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to have “a multi-faceted discussion” on the issue.

The police review agency said Wednesday it was processing a number of complaints in connection with recent protests in the city.

150 Minneapolis police officers seek ‘duty disability’ for PTSD following protests

More than 150 Minneapolis police officers have filed for disability claims, with many claiming post-traumatic stress disorder for their departures following weeks of soaring crime and unrest following the death of George Floyd, an attorney for the officers said Friday.

The claims come as the city experiences an increase in crime and elected leaders attempt to dismantle the police department and create a new public safety apparatus.

Attorney Ron Meuser didn’t mention the death of George Floyd and the unrest that followed as the cause of the surge in disability requests but said the past two months have “pushed many officers to their breaking point.”

Attorney Ron Meuser, Jr. addresses a news conference across from Minneapolis City Hall on Friday where he discussed the alarming rate of Minneapolis Police Officers who are filing claims for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He said In the last six weeks, over 150 police officers have started the process of filing physical and mental disability claims, the majority of which encompass officers suffering from PTSD. (AP Photo/Jim Mone)

“I’m seeing PTSD symptoms of officers with highly diminished capacity to live and socialize, extraordinary rates of divorce, and alcohol dependency – just to cope. It is an emotional crisis that cannot and should not continue,” he said in a statement.

Mayor Jacob Frey issued a statement saying that COVID-19 and unrest following Floyd’s death tested the community and officers in profound ways. He said cities need resources to reflect the realities on the ground.

“In the meantime, I am committed to supporting those officers committed to carrying out their oath to serve and protect the people of Minneapolis during a challenging time for our city,” he said.

Meuser said many of his clients were present when Third Precinct was abandoned as rioters closed in on the building during a chaotic night of unrest that ended with the police station set ablaze. He said some officers wrote text messages to their loved ones over fear they wouldn’t make it out the station alive.

Others counted their ammunition in case they needed to shoot themselves, rather than be beaten to death, he said.

“They were left alone in the Third Precinct without support from city leaders,” Meuser said. “Officers worked 12-hour-plus shifts for days upon days, without relief or clear leadership.”

Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder declined to comment to Fox News on the number of disability claims filed by police personnel. City officials did not immediately respond to a Fox News request for comment.

Meuser said he’s been approached officers to file for disability claims through the state’s Public Employment Retirement Association, or PERA. Around 75 officers have left the force or turned in paperwork with the intention of leaving, Meuser said during a news conference Friday.

Some officers seeking disability are veterans of the department with 16 to 23 experience, he said.

The department currently has 850 officers. The city said it has received 17 PTSD workers’ compensation claims in the last month. For PERA duty disability, officers are not obligated to notify the department that an application was submitted.

Ginni Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarance Thomas, slammed Black Lives Matter as a “dangerous Trojan Horse” that invites “mob rule and property looting.”

According to The Washington Post, Thomas denounced the movement for racial justice after a town in Virginia put up a large banner over its Main Street expressing solidarity.

“Welcome to Clifton where Black Lives Matter,” the banner reads.

In an email obtained by the Post, she slammed the town’s decision to embrace the movement.

“BLM is a bit of a dangerous Trojan Horse and they are catching well-meaning people into dangerous posturing that can invite mob rule and property looting,” Thomas wrote in a June 24 email, according to the Post. “Let’s not be tricked into joining cause with radical extremists seeking to foment a cultural revolution because they hate America.”

The controversy surrounding DeSean Jackson’s anti-Semitic social media posts this week continued to spiral Friday after New Orleans Saints safety Malcolm Jenkins called it a “distraction.”

In a brief video uploaded to Instagram, Jenkins said the comments made by the Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver were “wrong,” but not before calling it a “distraction.”

“We gotta stay focused,” Jenkins said. “All of this back and forth that’s going on right now is a distraction. Comments were made, and they were wrong. Allow those who were impacted by it to voice their grievances.”

He continued: “But we’ve got to stay focused. Because Breonna Taylor’s killers are still not arrested. We’re still fighting for justice. We’ve got a lot of work to do. And this ain’t it. Stay focused.”

But Jenkins went further in the caption of his post.

“We can honor the Jewish heritage and trauma while staying focused on what matters. Jewish people aren’t our problem, and we aren’t their problem,” he wrote. “Let’s not lose focus on what the problem truly is, and that’s that black lives still don’t matter in this country. Push this energy toward arresting and convicting the killers of Breonna Taylor and burning systemic racism to the ground.”

Earlier this week, Jackson posted a passage from a book falsely attributed to Adolf Hitler. He also praised Louis Farrakhan in two other Instagram posts. Those items have been deleted and he has apologized for the posts.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is optimistic about what the response will be to the social justice message his team will be showcasing on the back of their jerseys once the season resumes later this month.

In an interview with NBA Inside Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson on Thursday, Cuban said he’s not concerned about the players getting “distracted” by the fans’ reactions.

PHILADELPHIA UNION PLAYERS WEAR NAMES OF BLACK VICTIMS OF POLICE BRUTALITY ON JERSEYS AT MLS TOURNAMENT

“It will be something that people talk about, but once the games start fans are going to be fans and love watching the games and people who are not fans will want to commentate,” Cuban said, according to Heavy.com. “Players are used to ignoring commentary on social legacy and social media, so I don’t think they are distracted by it at all.”

The Mavericks announced on their team website Thursday that the players will have the word “Equality” written on the back of their jerseys when they head to Florida for the season restart.

Some players, including Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis, J.J. Barea and Maxi Kleber, will have the message written in their native languages.

“I think in the conversations that we had as a team and we’ve had individually, equality is something that we know is mighty important, especially right now with what’s going on,” Mavs forward Dwight Powell told the website.

“For some of the guys to put that in their native language kind of lends to the fact that we’re all part of this conversation regardless of where you come from or your race, creed, religion or whatever it may be.”

Cuban said his hope is that the message unifies his players: “… this is such a unique situation, my hope is that the players will become closer and stronger together.”

Steve Hilton slams de Blasio’s ‘offensive’ stances on police, protests as ‘performative wokeness’

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s special support for holding Black Lives Matter protests despite the coronavirus pandemic is “offensive on so many levels,” “The Next Revolution” host Steve Hilton said on “Outnumbered” Friday.

“Just imagine how that sounds when he says, ‘We’ve got to stop everything except these protests‘ to those people who’ve had to miss funerals with their loved ones over the past few months,” Hilton said.. “Because that’s the kind of gathering the mayor won’t allow. How offensive that is to those people…?”

On Thursday, de Blasio announced that large events requiring a permit from city officials would be canceled through the end of September, putting the kibosh on events like Brooklyn’s West Indian American Day Carnival, Manhattan’s Dominican Day Parade and Little Italy’s San Gennaro festival.

However, de Blasio appeared to give the go-ahead to the protests that have swept the city following the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.

“This is a historic moment of change,” de Blasio told CNN host Wolf Blitzer Thursay. “We have to respect that but also say to people the kinds of gatherings we’re used to, the parades, the fairs — we just can’t have that while we’re focusing on health right now,”

Hilton also called out the mayor for a Thursday “PR stunt” in which he helped paint “Black Lives Matter” in big lettering on Fifth Avenue outside Trump Tower.

“We’ve seen a lot of examples over the past few weeks and months of what’s being described as ‘performative wokeness’ and stunts and symbols and superficial things that actually don’t change anything in the real world,” Hilton said. “This, however, is a particularly sickening example of that.

“While he’s painting Black Lives Matter on that particular street in New York, you literally have Black people dying on the mayors’ streets in New York because of his failures over policing,” he asserted.

Last week, the Bigg Apple’s lawmakers voted on budget changes that shifted $1 billion from the NYPD to programs that assist in youth and community development. That was followed by a bloody Fourth of July weekend which saw 64 New Yorkers shot11 fatally – including a young father who was shot while holding hands with his 6-year-old daughter in the Bronx.

In all, the city recorded 205 shootings in the month of June, a 130 percent increase over the 89 shootings that took place in the same month last year.

“I’m all for police reform. I’ve made that argument over and over again: sensible police reform, that’s needed,” said Hilton. “What we don’t need is police retreat, because that means more people will be killed, including Black people.”

“And, that’s what’s happening on his watch,” he concluded. “It’s totally shameful.”

“I have to say I’m very proud of my players throughout the past four months for the leadership they’ve shown, the leadership role they’ve taken in the BLM movement, educating the other players on our team,” Union manager Jim Curtin said after the club’s win, ESPN reported.

“The idea today was action over permission; I hope the league understands that. It was done to show respect, to learn, to grow, to make our country better. I’m really proud of my players for everything they’ve done.”

The NBA previously floated the idea of wearing the names of Black victims of police brutality on their jerseys once the season returned but ultimately decided to go with unifying social justice messages like “Equality” or “Black Lives Matter.”

The station reported that another group protesting police brutality walked past the rally, yelling “No Justice, No Peace.”

“I can’t even describe how good of a feeling it was,” said Sgt. Jeremy Glass at the pro-law enforcement rally, according to WRAL-TV.

That didn’t mean the concerns of the other group didn’t matter, he said.

“This wasn’t saying that their cause is any less,” he told the station. “This was just people coming together, saying, ‘Hey, we understand the police are going through a lot.'”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has “surrendered” to the radical left “mob” by declining to admonish protesters tearing down historical statues and defacing monuments, Wyoming Republican Sen. John Barrasso said Friday.

In an interview on “America’s Newsroom,” Barrasso told host Jon Scott that the Democratic Party has become extremely “radical,” “dangerous,” and “out of touch” under the control of a coalition with socialists, Marxists, and anarchists.

PELOSI ON CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STATUE DESTRUCTION: ‘PEOPLE WILL DO WHAT THEY WILL DO’

“People will do what they do,” Pelosi, D-Calif., said during a news conference Thursday at the Capitol.

In her native city of Baltimore. Md. — where her father served as the mayor from 1947 to 1959 and her brother Thomas D’Alesandro III also led the city from 1967 to 1971 — protesters pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus and then tossed the monument into the city’s Inner Harbor.

“It’s up to the communities to decide what statues they want to see,” Pelosi said, adding that taking down the Columbus monument “doesn’t diminish [her] pride in [her] Italian American heritage.”

However, the city’s Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young had harsh words for the protesters who destroyed the statue near Little Italy over the Fourth of July, saying he wouldn’t tolerate the destruction of property. Young said the toppling was unacceptable and the perpetrators, if identified, “will be brought to justice,” The Baltimore Sun reported.

Pelosi said Thursday she’s most concerned about looking ahead and she’s not wedded to physical monuments and tokens of the past, noting she didn’t “even have [her] grandmother’s earrings.”

“This is a city, Baltimore, where Nancy Pelosi’s father was the mayor and he likely contributed money and time to the putting up of that statue to Christopher Columbus. Now she’s fine with tearing it down,” Barrasso said.

“But, Jon,” he said, addressing Scott, “it’s not just about the statue. It’s about the whole effort to cancel a culture of this whole movement to the far, far dangerous left for our country. People [who] want to cancel and defund the police, want to go after the churches, want to go after free speech: all of those things are being attacked and she’s willing to stand by and let it happen.”

Barrasso pointed out that the “entire” party was heading in that direction at the expense of the rest of the country.

“And, the type of things that they want to do, to change America permanently, and what I believe for the worst, with taking away free speech, canceling who we are, where we’ve come from…We ought to be taking a look and talking about the future,” he said. “She’s not doing that.

“I think that what she is doing is ignoring the reality of what’s happening. And, what I’m seeing here in Wyoming, talking to people who are absolutely offended by this approach of the mob…and Nancy Pelosi has surrendered to them,” Barrasso concluded.
