While the NBA season continues to remain on hold because of the outbreak of COVID-19, Portland Trail Blazers’ Carmelo Anthony and NBA analyst Dwyane Wade are passing the time by sharing old stories with fans via social media.

Wade and Anthony took to Instagram Live on Friday to recall a 2015 vacation in the Bahamas with their families where LeBron James saved Anthony’s life after a snorkeling trip gone bad.

LEBRON JAMES ON NBA’S POSSIBLE RETURN AMID CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC: ‘CAN’T GO STRAIGHT TO PLAYOFFS’

“We jumped off the boat in the Bahamas. Everybody swam to the little gratto over there, underneath, and we came out,” Anthony said.

While everything seemed fine, the 10-time NBA All-Star quickly realized something was wrong.

“It was my fault though because I’m still trying to see the last little bit of the barracudas snorkeling and all that … I look up, the current is taking me in the middle of the ocean like opposite from the boat,” he said.

Wade added: “We couldn’t see you.”

It was at this point Anthony says James jumped off the boat like “MacGyver.”

“He jumped off the boat into the water. He was bringing me back with one arm. He’s swimming with the other arm and he’s carrying me with one arm,” Anthony said laughing.

“That was special,” he continued. “He saved my life. … Yo Bron, I appreciate that, you saved my life that day. Them little flippers wasn’t working for me.”

LeBron James doesn’t want to play in empty arena after NBA coronavirus memo

The NBA wants its teams to prepare to play games without fans if necessary because of the coronavirus crisis, but LeBron James already says he won’t play basketball in an empty arena.

The league circulated a memo to its teams Friday telling them to prepare in case it becomes necessary to play games without fans or media, as sports leagues in Europe have already done. The memo detailed potential actions that teams might need to take “if it were to become necessary to play a game with only essential staff present.”

But when James was asked about that possibility after he scored 37 points in his Los Angeles Lakers’ 113-103 win over the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night, the NBA’s leading active scorer was definitive.

“We play games without the fans? Nah, that’s impossible,” James said. “I ain’t playing if I ain’t got the fans in the crowd. That’s who I play for. I play for my teammates, and I play for the fans. That’s what it’s all about. So if I show up to an arena and there ain’t no fans in there, I ain’t playing. They can do what they want to do.”

That’s what it’s all about. So if I show up to an arena and there ain’t no fans in there, I ain’t playing. They can do what they want to do.

The memo, obtained by The Associated Press, says teams should identify which team and arena people would be necessary to conduct games, and be able to communicate quickly with non-essential staff, as well as ticket holders and corporate partners.

TUCKER CARLSON: TO PROTECT AGAINST CORONAVIRUS AND OTHER THREATS, US MUST BECOME LESS DEPENDANT ON CHINA

Teams should also be prepared “for the possibility of implementing temperature checks on players, team staff, referees, and anyone else who is essential to conducting such a game in the team’s arena.”

Contents of the memo were first reported by The Athletic.

CORONAVIRUS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

The letter also says teams should plan for scenarios in which media could attend games under revised media policies.

The league had already sent a memo to teams this week offering 10 recommendations to players with hopes of decreasing risks of getting the virus — among them, not taking items such as pens, markers, balls and jerseys from autograph seekers.

An NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament game on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, was played in an empty gym Friday in what was believed to be the first U.S. sports event held without fans because of the coronavirus, though an NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel said it is “not recommending cancellation or public spacing of athletic and related events scheduled to occur in public spaces across the United States.”

LeBron James pays tribute to Kobe Bryant as Lakers return home: ‘Live on, brother’

A darkened Staples Center was pierced by shouts of “Kobe! Kobe!” on Friday night as cellist Ben Hong accompanied a self-narrated video tribute to Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant with an instrumental “Hallelujah.”

Bryant’s own words then filled the arena.

“Once upon a time, there was a young basketball player who had dreams of becoming one of the greatest basketball players of all time,” Bryant said at the beginning of a moving montage of his words, career and life that ended with Bryant telling fans, ‘Mamba out!'”

KOBE BRYANT FANS GATHER OUTSIDE STAPLES CENTER BEFORE LAKERS’ FIRST HOME GAME SINCE COPTER CRASH

The Lakers held a 24.2-second silence to honor Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, known as “Gigi,” and seven others who died when the helicopter he had chartered crashed into a Los Angeles County hillside Sunday. The length of the silence represneted Bryant’s Lakers uniform number, 24, and Gigi’s youth basketball number, 2. Two courtside seats draped with their jerseys were left vacant as well.

Carmelo Anthony, a close friend of Bryant’s with the visiting Portland Trail Blazers, sat out the game, reportedly still too emotional about the tragedy to participate.

Usher sang “Amazing Grace,” Boyz II Men performed the national anthem and every Lakers starter was introduced as Kobe Bryant.

Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth also performed “See You Again” at halftime.

Outside the arena, legions of fans who didn’t have tickets to the game — the Lakers’ first since the tragedy — watched the tribute on TV screens.

“I grew up with Kobe. I’m not a very emotional person but I’ve been crying all week,” Daniel Torres, who was wearing a Bryant jersey, said. “I can’t believe the outpouring and how many people loved him.”

But when Lakers star LeBron James stepped into the spotlight, the gravity of the moment came together.

Emotional and raw, James threw his prepared notes away.

“I’m going to go straight from the heart,” he said to cheers. “We’re all grieving, we’re all hurt, we’re all heartbroken.”

James said before he became a Laker he’d heard how Laker Nation was a “family.”

“Everybody that’s here this is really truly, truly a family, and I know Kobe and Gianna and Vanessa and everybody thanks you guys from the bottom of their heart as Kobe said,” James told the crowd. “Tonight we celebrate the kid that came here at 18 years of age, retired at 38 and become probably the best dad we’ve seen over the last three years, man.

“So, in the word of Kobe Bryant: ‘Mamba Out,’ but in the words of us: ‘Not forgotten.’ Live on, brother.”

During the game, both teams took violations – one for 24 seconds and one eight seconds – in honor of Bryant’s numbers.

Kobe Bryant, one of the greatest NBA players of all-time, has died in a helicopter crash at age 41 on Sunday.

Just a day earlier, his name dominated headlines as LeBron James passed Bryant for the No. 3 spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list.

In response, Bryant congratulated James on Twitter Saturday night, writing, “Continuing to move the game forward @KingJames. Much respect my brother.” Bryant’s final tweet has been circulating following the news of his death as grieving fans point to it as an indication of his “generosity, and kindness.”

The Athletic senior NBA writer Joe Vardon said Bryant’s tweet proved his dedication and commitment to mentoring future NBA stars.

“The thing that has set Kobe apart from some of the greats before him and has changed the way basketball will be going forward is his willingness to mentor later on in his career,” Vardon said Sunday on “America’s News HQ.”

Vardon added that Bryant’s response to James’ victory “shows that once he realized that he had lost step and would be retiring, he wanted to be that bridge for the next batch of players to be great.”

Twitter users reeling from Bryant’s death responded to his Saturday tweet to express their condolences.

Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash Sunday, was remembered on Twitter, as fans noted his final tweet paid homage to LeBron James, who moved past the late basketball icon for third place on the NBA’s career scoring list.

‘“Continuing to move the game forward @KingJames. Much respect my brother 💪🏾 #33644,” Bryant tweeted.

The 35-year-old James set the milestone on a driving layup against the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night.

The Los Angeles Lakers star scored the basket with 7:23 left in the third quarter and he waved to a Sixers crowd that gave him a rousing standing ovation when the mark was announced by the public address announcer. The basket gave him 33,644 points.

James entered 18 points shy of passing Bryant on the list and couldn’t quite get there in the first half. He scored six points in the first quarter but had four turnovers that included an errant pass into the seats. He opened the second quarter with a layup, and then went to the free throw line for his next four points, giving him 12.

He finished the first half 3 for 7 from the floor, missed all three 3s, had five turnovers and three fouls for 14 points.

With a nod to Bryant’s nickname, James scribbled “Mamba 4 Life” on his Nikes against the 76ers.

Bryant, who played his entire career with the Lakers, finished with 33,643 points.

The hashtag on Bryant’s last tweet, “#33644,” referred to the number of points needed to beat his own record that James scored as small forward.

The 18-time NBA All-Star who won five championships and became one of the greatest basketball players of his generation during a 20-year career with the Lakers was 41.

After James passed Bryant on Saturday, he remembered listening to Bryant when the superstar came to speak at a childhood basketball camp.

“I remember one thing he said: If you want to be great at it, or want to be one of the greats, you’ve got to put the work in,” James said. “There’s no substitution for work.”

Fan throws debris at LeBron James’ son, NBA superstar calls it “disrespectful”

Lebron James, the Los Angeles Lakers star, expressed his frustration on Monday after an unidentified fan threw some type a small piece of trash at his son during his son’s high school basketball game.

Bronny James Jr., himself a star at Sierra Canyon, was playing an away game in  Springfield, Mass., when the incident occurred. His father, who was also playing in an away game against the Boston Celtics, was at his son’s game and flanked by security guards.

A referee could be seen in video stoping play and security was called to remove the fan. However, no one was ejected because the fan couldn’t be identified, reports say. Some described the object as resembling a piece of candy or trash.

James, 35, spoke with reporters after his Lakers lost to the Celtics on Monday– telling them the throw “made me mad” and was “disrespectful,” according to ESPN.

James said he didn’t see the incident until after the game, the outlet reported.

“It’s just disrespectful, and it was a little kid, too. I don’t know how old that little kid was, so I don’t know if he learned that on his own, or if he learned it at home. Whatever the case may be, it’s disrespectful. I wonder how old that kid is if he is the age around Bronny’s age or Bryce’s age. I’d like to see them try that while they’re paying attention.”

James also responded to a slow-motion video of the incident that he was tagged in on Twitter.

“Hating has no age limit! #JamesGang is build for it and well equipped. As we proceed,” James said.

Sierra Canyon lost its third game of the season 70-62. James, 15, came off the bench, playing 13 minutes and didn’t speak to reporters after the contest, the outlet said.

His teammates and father spoke about how he’s handled the extra attention being the son of an NBA superstar.

“He’s cool, calm, he’s better than his mom and dad. Let’s just say that. He is, he’s better than his mom and dad for some of the things he lets off his shoulder. I guess he’s taken some from me too because I let a lot of s— go too,” James said, according to ESPN.

Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers took issue with LeBron James’ comments on load management after the Los Angeles Lakers star said he planned to play every game because he doesn’t know how many he may have left.

Rivers, whose Clippers have a plan in place to make sure Kawhi Leonard stays healthy through the season and into the playoffs, scoffed at James’ comments.

LEBRON JAMES DISMISSES LOAD MANAGEMENT CONCERNS: ‘IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE TO ME’

“It’s our philosophy,” he said Tuesday, according to USA Today. “I don’t know what theirs are. I think theirs is whatever LeBron says it is, to be honest. That makes a lot of sense to me. I like what we are doing, and I think it’s the smart thing to do. Who knows? We’ll see at the end.”

James, who is playing at one the highest levels of his career, dismissed any notion of using load management this season to rest after Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Hawks.

“Why wouldn’t I play if I’m healthy?” James asked rhetorically. “It doesn’t make any sense to me, personally. I mean, I don’t know how many games I’ve left in my career. I don’t know how many kids that may show up to a game that are there to see me play.”

Load management has been a hot-button issue in the NBA this season and James has not been in favor of it. He said in November that he had no plans of missing a game due to load management, according to ESPN.

“If I’m hurt, I don’t play. If not, I’m playing,” James said. “That’s what has always been my motto.”

LeBron sets triple-double mark, Lakers hold off OKC 112-107

Westlake Legal Group LeBron-James2 LeBron sets triple-double mark, Lakers hold off OKC 112-107 fox-news/sports/nba/los-angeles-lakers fox-news/sports/nba fox-news/person/lebron-james fnc/sports fnc Associated Press article 7a48285e-fb16-5818-9cc8-c8ea5fd579df

To LeBron James, triple-doubles are not a goal.

They are only a side effect of the consistent, brilliant all-around play he has been dishing out for 17 NBA seasons, with no slowdown in sight.

Triple-doubles also don’t mean much to LeBron without wins attached to them, so James was pleased when his latest statistical superlative occurred during yet another successful night for the surging Los Angeles Lakers.

James became the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double against every team in the league, and Anthony Davis scored 34 points during the Lakers’ fifth straight victory, 112-107 over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night.

James finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to post a triple-double against his 30th opponent for the NBA-leading Lakers, who have won 12 of 13 after a perfect four-game homestand. James was more surprised than thrilled by his latest statistical achievement, particularly while a different statistic glared at him from the box score.

“Coach (Frank) Vogel came in here and said, ‘Congratulations,’ and I thought he was joking about my seven turnovers,” James said. “I really don’t know what to think about it. I just think it’s a pretty cool stat to know, and I’m glad it happened in a win.”

James has five triple-doubles in the Lakers’ last 10 games, getting four in victories. There’s a reason for this spree: Although James has constantly filled the stat sheet since he joined the league in 2003, he is leading the NBA this season with 11.1 assists per game, nearly four more than his career average. He has at least 10 assists in six consecutive games, the longest streak of his career.

Vogel has put the ball in James’ hands constantly on offense, and his playmaking acumen has grown along with his chemistry with Davis, as they demonstrated repeatedly against the Thunder. Seven of LeBron’s assists came on baskets by Davis.

“Amazing,” Davis said. “To be able to do that against every team is something special. I mean, (it’s) trippy that he’s been playing for a long time, so it was a matter of time before it happened, but just a tribute to all his hard work.”

James is fifth in NBA history with 86 triple-doubles, but the four players in front of him — Oscar Robertson, Russell Westbrook, Lakers great Magic Johnson and Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd — hadn’t done it against 30 teams. Kidd, who did it against 28 teams, has served as a role model for James’ efforts as a tall point guard.

“He’s just playing terrific basketball,” Vogel said. “For him to be doing what he’s doing in his 17th year is just nothing short of remarkable. There’s no reason to believe he can’t sustain that for the rest of the season and help us make a real strong playoff push.”

Dennis Schröder scored 20 of his season-high 31 points in a phenomenal first half for the Thunder, who have lost four of five despite two solid performances at Staples Center. Danilo Gallinari added 25 points in his former home arena, and Nerlens Noel had 15.

“That’s why (James) is considered probably the best of all time, but I think we did a great job on him,” Schröder said. “They obviously hit some tough shots.”

One night after the Thunder barely missed an upset win over the Clippers thanks to a last-minute 3-pointer by former star Paul George, Oklahoma City couldn’t quite catch up to the powerful Lakers despite keeping the game close all night.

“There’s a lot of things we did well in there,” Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan said. “But, you know, we came up short in all these games. I think the one sign you can point to is both teams, the Clippers and the Lakers, are really, really good teams, so we’re competing well at a high level. But we’ve just got to do more in order to be able to finish and close out games.”

The Thunder won’t have to wait long for a rematch: These teams meet again in Oklahoma City in three days.

TIP-INS

Thunder: F Hamidou Diallo missed his third straight game with a left knee sprain. … Schröder got a technical foul in the third quarter for confronting Davis at the free throw line after Davis dunked and was fouled.

Lakers: Kyle Kuzma left the court in the second quarter with an eye abrasion after teenager Darius Bazley hit him in the right side of his face with an elbow on a drive. Kuzma returned to the bench in the second half, but with obvious damage above his eye. He didn’t return to the game, although Vogel said he was available if necessary. The Lakers plan to re-evaluate him within the next 24 hours.

CLOSEOUT SEQUENCE

James’ 3-pointer put the Lakers up 109-98 with 3:08 to play, but the Thunder scored nine straight points to cut the Lakers’ lead to two on Gallinari’s free throws with 1:24 left.

After Danny Green got a key offensive rebound for the Lakers, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope drilled a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left. James missed two free throws moments later to keep the Thunder in it, but Oklahoma City couldn’t score again.

POINT GUARDS BEHAVE

Chris Paul had four points, 10 assists and five rebounds for the Thunder, and he didn’t appear to clash with Rajon Rondo, his opponent in a fight early last season while he was with the Rockets. Rondo had eight points and a season-high 10 assists.

Two champs from two different sports with the same goal: “we’re going to play until we can’t walk no more.”

The Los Angeles Lakers’ LeBron James, 34, told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin Friday that he plans to play basketball as long as he physically can.

LEBRON JAMES SLAMS AAU OVER DEMANDING SCHEDULE, INCREASED MILEAGE ON YOUNG ATHLETES

“As long as I feel great, as long as I can still play at a high level and mentally I’m sharp and I’m there, I’m giving everything to the game,” he said before adding, “I have no idea.”

The three-time NBA champion said he plans to follow in the footsteps of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as far as playing beyond their respective league’s average player age.

“Me and Tom Brady are one and the same. We’re gonna play until we can’t walk no more,” he said.

Brady, 42, took to Twitter to add “I’m playing until I can’t dunk anymore,” to which James said: “Well I’m playing until I can’t throw TD passes anymore.”

Brady commented on the Twitter love, telling WEEI that he and James have been friends “for a long time.”

“Yeah, I’ve always admired him. He’s a great athlete, player. I think he loves the sport, he loves basketball, he loves the competition. I feel the same way about football.”

Brady’s trainer commented earlier this week that the six-time Superbowl champion, who has previously vowed to play until 45, has recently said that he wants to go until “46 or 47.”

LeBron James among California wildfire evacuees after blaze erupts near Getty Center in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was among the Southern California residents who had to leave their homes as mandatory evacuations were issued early Monday, after a “very dynamic fire” erupted on a hillside near the Getty Center museum, fire officials said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is urging residents to evacuate the Mountain Gate and Mandeville Canyon communities, between Mandeville Canyon Road and Interstate 405 north of Sunset Blvd., due to the explosive blaze.

The fire erupted around 2 a.m. local time in the Sepulveda Pass along Interstate 405 near the Getty Center Museum community and the hill-top golf community of Mountain Gate. By 7:45 a.m. ET, officials said it had already grown to encompass over 250 acres as more than 470 LAFD firefighters with assistance from neighboring agencies rushed to combat the blaze.

“This is a very dynamic fire that is moving in a westward direction.,” the LAFD said.

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES, STRONG WINDS PROMPT NEWSOM TO DECLARE STATE OF EMERGENCY; 200,000 ORDERED TO EVACUATE

James, one of the NBA’s most prominent athletes, tweeted he had to evacuate from his home after the blaze erupted, calling the fires “no joke.”

“Had to emergency evacuate my house and I’ve been driving around with my family trying to get rooms,” he said, later sharing they were able to find somewhere to accommodate them.”I [pray emoji] for all the families in the area that could be affected by these [fire emojis] now! Pretty please get to safety ASAP.”

Flames could be seen on hillsides, with winds fanning the blaze as it grew rapidly. Helicopters were attempting to conduct airdrops, and the flames appeared to be near large homes in the area of the upscale community of Brentwood.

An evacuation warning was issued in the area from Mulholland Drive to the north, Topanga Canyon to the west, Sunset to the south and Mandeville Canyon to the east, and expanded westward to include parts of Topanga State Park and the Pacific Palisades.

Evacuation centers are open in Westwood and Sherman Oaks.

Videos posted to Twitter by motorists on the 405 showed hillsides engulfed in fire as crews rushed to the scene.

“The 405 freeway a few miles from Santa Monica looks just like a scene in Volcano,” another Twitter user wrote.

“There are mandatory evacuations in place and all residents West of the 405 and South of Sunset need to be vigilant and prepared,” the LAFD tweeted.

Mount Saint Mary’s University tweeted its Chalon campus near the Getty had been evacuated under orders from the LAFD. Students were taken to the school’s Doheny campus. Evacuations were also ordered for 200 people in a care facility next door, FOX11 reported.

Although the Getty Center is nearby, officials say the facility was built with thick walls and doors that should be able to compartmentalize any flames. The Getty Center said on Twitter a “serious brush fire” was burning in the hills north of the facility.

“Currently the fire is moving west and away from the Getty, and we have activated emergency operations,” the museum said, adding that it was preparing to assist emergency responders.

The blaze in Southern California comes as the Tick Fire near Santa Clarita was 70 percent contained as of Sunday night. Up north, crews are grappling with a wildfire in Sonoma County that officials say covers 85 square miles and caused the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people.

Fire conditions statewide made California “a tinderbox,” said Jonathan Cox, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Of the state’s 58 counties, 43 were under red flag warnings for high fire danger Sunday, with the threat lasting into Monday.

Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency Friday in response to the wildfires, which have been powered by gusts reaching more than 102 mph.
