Harlem Globetrotters legend Fred “Curly” Neal died on Wednesday at his home in Houston, Texas.

Former Globetrotters owner Mannie Jackson confirmed his death to The Undefeated. From 1963-85, Neal played in more than 6,000 games across 97 countries, according to the team’s website.

Before the Internet and cable television really existed, Neal and the Globetrotters introduced the sport of basketball to millions of sports fan across the globe. Curly was known for his impressive shooting, ball-handling skills, his smile and iconic bald head.

Neal wore No. 22 while playing 22 seasons for the red, white and blue.

“We have lost one of the most genuine human beings the world has ever known,” said Globetrotters general manager Jeff Munn in a statement. “His basketball skill was unrivaled by most, and his warm heart and huge smile brought joy to families worldwide. He always made time for his many fans and inspired millions.”

Neal’s No. 22 jersey was retired by the Globetrotters in 2008. He was just the fifth Globetrotter to have his jersey number retired, joining Wilt Chamberlain, Marques Haynes, Meadowlark Lemon and Goose Tatum. To date, there have been eight numbers retired.

Montana may be the third-lowest state in terms of population density in the U.S., but it hasn’t stopped its Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department from coming up with unique ways to recommend social distancing to its residents amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The department has converted the recommended six-feet social distancing rule — intended to limit the spread of COVID-19 — into social “fishtancing” — expressing the gap in terms of the lengths of several varieties of fish.

For example, the recommended gap equals “4 trout,” “2 shovelnose sturgeon,” “1 paddlefish” or “1 fishing rod” measurements, according to a Twitter post by the government agency.

“If you do go out, please remember to recreate responsibly,” the government agency said. “This is Montana FWP’s fisheries recommended 6′ of safe social distancing. #406feet #COVID19MT #Fishtancing.”

Users on Twitter shared their amusement with the unique fish guidelines during a worrisome time for most people in the U.S.

“Had no idea that a paddlefish was that big – thanks for the chart – it’s fascinating,” one user wrote.

“I lived along Rattlesnake Creek during graduate school in Missoula. Would’ve been more like 8 trout,” another replied.

Montana is known for its agriculture, scenery, great outdoors and areas like Glacier National Park.

Although parks in the state remain open, Montana State Parks visitor centers and offices are closed, in keeping up with COVID-19 guidelines.

Schools in the state are also closed.

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, a Democrat, declared a state of emergency March 12. He activated a Coronavirus Task Force on March 3 to help combat the spread before cases were announced in the state.

Montana has recorded 65 cases of the virus, although no deaths have been reported so far.

“El Presidente” Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, joined “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Wednesday to discuss how he’s weathering the coronavirus pandemic, which has brought college and professional sports in America to an unprecedented standstill.

“I am wearing purple sweatpants. I just started wearing them every day because what’s the point of changing pants if you’re not going outside?” Portnoy told host Tucker Carlson. “And then I decided this would be kind of my fight against [coronavirus]. Corona will not make me waste pants. It just won’t.

So I’m going to wear … my purple sweat pants till the quarantine is lifted.”

“The bigger question is, am I washing the pants, which occasionally I am,” Portnoy added. “But yeah, I just wear the same pants every single day.”

Portnoy also told Carlson that in the absence of betting on sports, he had turned his attention to the stock market after his portfolio had taken a hit.

“I have set up a little bell in my office. [At] 9:30, I ring it and I go to work just day trading the crap out of the stock market,” Portnoy revealed. “I took a financial beating because I think, you know, [casino and racetrack operator] Penn National bought a good portion [36 percent] of Barstool Sports. Well, it turns out this pandemic is not good for the casino business because they’re closed.”

CORONAVIRUS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Carlson then asked Portnoy about his TV schedule, to which the Barstool founder responed that he’s relying on a classic sitcom to deal with cabin fever.

“I watch one movie a day, a new one, and then I’m watching ‘The Office’ over and over, just cycling through the seasons,” Portnoy said. “It never gets old.”

PGA Tour cancels Players Championship, other events amid coronavirus fears

The PGA Tour said Thursday it was canceling The Players Championship and at least three subsequent tournaments — following the lead of nearly every other major sports league in the U.S. in calling off competitions amid the coronavirus outbreak.

“It is with regret that we are announcing the cancellation of THE PLAYERS Championship,” the tour said in a statement. “We have also decided to cancel all PGA TOUR events – across all of our Tours – in the coming weeks, through the Valero Texas Open.”

Also shut down were the Valspar Championship scheduled for next week near Tampa, Fla., the Dell Match Play in Austin, Texas, and the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

The surprise decision came roughly 10 hours after commissioner Jay Monahan initially said the Players Championship — considered golf’s fifth major — would go on as scheduled this weekend near Jacksonville, Fla., but without fans.

NBA SUSPENDS SEASON UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE AFTER PLAYER TESTS POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS

“PGA TOUR events – across all Tours – will currently proceed as scheduled, but will do so without fans,” Monahan said earlier in the day.

The Players Championship, held annually at the Tournament  Players Club at Sawgrass draws thousands of fans from around the world to watch golf’s most famous players compete on one of the sport’s biggest stages. Fans and players had already participated in the first round of the tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., but will now have to make other plans and travel arrangements.

The Valero Open was to be the last tournament before the Masters, which is set to begin in April.

“We have pledged from the start to be responsible, thoughtful and transparent with our decision process,” the tour added. “We did everything possible to create a safe environment for our players in order to continue the event throughout the weekend, and we were endeavoring to give our fans a much-needed respite from the current climate. But at this point – and as the situation continues to rapidly change – the right thing to do for our players and our fans is to pause.”

When asked why play was originally allowed when other sports had shut down altogether, Monahan cited the outdoor environment.

“If you look at our venues, obviously we’re an outdoor sport, we’re not in a stadium, and here this week at TPC Sawgrass our players are making their way over 400 acres,” Monahan told reporters Thursday.

“You’ve got 144 players here and over the course of a round our players generally do socially distance themselves, we felt like by taking this step to address the problem with our fans, we’re in a position where we can continue to operate the events as of right now. There are other circumstances that led to the decisions that those leagues made that are unique to those leagues that we’re not currently faced with.”

Monahan said he spoke with President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis before the original fan ban was made. He said they were supportive of the precautionary measures taken.

“This is a difficult situation, one with consequences that impact our players, fans and the communities in which we play,” Monahan added. “We’ve had a team in place that has been carefully monitoring and assessing the situation and its implications for several weeks. We’ve weighed all the options”

Golfer Rory McIlroy said it was a “scary time” and that the tour made a step in the right direction by eliminating fans. But he said it would take only one player or caddie to test positive for the virus for the tour to go to the next step.

“We need to shut it down then,” he said without hesitation. “I think for us to keep playing on tour, we all — the tour players and people that are involved — need to get tested.”

Indian Wells tennis postponed after coronavirus confirmed

The BNP Paribas Open, the near-major tennis tournament set to begin this week in the California desert, won’t be played as scheduled after a case of coronavirus was confirmed in the Coachella Valley.

It’s the largest U.S. sporting event to be called off over concerns about the spread of the disease. The South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, was canceled Friday.

The announcement came Sunday night after many players were already in the desert practicing. Qualifying matches were to begin Monday with women’s main draw matches starting Wednesday and the men’s draw beginning Thursday.

“We’re here and still deciding what’s next,” tweeted Rafael Nadal, the world’s second-ranked player. “So sad for all that is happening around the world with this situation. Hopefully soon solutions from the authorities. Stay all well and safe.”

The Riverside County Public Health Department declared a public health emergency for the desert cities 110 miles east of Los Angeles, including Indian Wells where the ATP and WTA tours were to play the two-week tournament.

Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency. California has reported 114 cases of the virus.

“There is too great a risk, at this time, to the public health of the Riverside County area in holding a large gathering of this size,” Dr. David Agus, professor of medicine and biomedical engineering at the University of Southern California, said Sunday. “It is not in the public interest of fans, players and neighboring areas for this tournament to proceed. We all have to join together to protect the community from the coronavirus outbreak.”

The event typically draws upwards of 450,000 fans. It is commonly referred to as the “fifth slam” because of its popularity among the players and its stature, ranking points and over $17 million in prize money that place it one rung below tennis’ four Grand Slam tournaments. This year’s field includel Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff. Kim Clijsters was set to continue her comeback at the event.

“So sad to hear the news about the postponing of @BNPPARIASOPEN,” Gauff tweeted. “I was so excited to make my debut in IW, but safety is always the no. 1 priority. Stay safe.”

Tournament director Tommy Haas said organizers are prepared to play the event on different dates and will explore options. However, the pro tennis calendar is tightly scheduled and the summer months in the desert are notoriously hot.

“We are very disappointed that the tournament will not take place, but the health and safety of the local community, fans, players, volunteers, sponsors, employees, vendors, and everyone involved with the event is of paramount importance,” Haas said in a statement.

Already some smaller tennis events in China and Italy — the two countries hardest hit by the virus — had been affected. The Miami Open, which follows Indian Wells later this month, could be jeopardy. The Ultra music festival in that city has already been canceled. The year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, is set to be played in Paris in May.

The decision to postpone Indian Wells was based on the guidance of medical professionals, the Centers for Disease Control and state of California officials, tournament officials said.

FAMILY OF MISSOURI’S FIRST CORONAVIRUS PATIENT BROKE SELF QUARANTINE, ATTENDED SCHOOL DANCE

“We understand the decision which has been made in the interest of public health and safety which is the top priority at this time,” WTA chairman and CEO Steve Simon said in a statement. “It is too soon to speculate about what will happen to other tournaments that follow. We will continue to closely monitor the situation. Health and safety will always come first.”

Refunds for this year’s event or a credit toward next year’s tournament are being offered.

Riverside County health officials said the individual with the first case of locally acquired coronavirus is being treated at Eisenhower Health in nearby Rancho Mirage after testing positive. The person is not being identified because of confidentiality rules.

Health officials are following up on people who may have been exposed and an investigation is underway to find out how the person contracted the disease.

It’s the second case recorded in Riverside County. A cruise ship passenger from Riverside County was diagnosed with COVID-19 recently and is recovering at a Northern California medical facility. That person hasn’t returned home since leaving the Diamond Princess ship.

“We have always known this was a possibility,” Dr. Cameron Kaiser, Riverside County public health officer, said of the first case. “We have been planning for weeks and are prepared to take the necessary steps to protect the health of our local community.”

A charity event featuring Nadal set for Tuesday night at Indian Wells Tennis Garden has been canceled, tournament spokesman Matt Van Tuinen said.

Nadal was set to be joined by defending BNP Paribas Open champion Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev, Matteo Berrettini, Stan Wawrinka, Milos Raonic and American Taylor Fritz for the Eisenhower Cup, a $150,000 winner-take-all event.

Earlier in the week, officials had announced several measures to protect players, fans, and staff at the tennis tournament.

Ball kids were going to have to wear gloves and not touch the towels of players on the court. Organized player and fan interaction was also going to be limited at the tournament. Besides ball kids, restaurant and food supply workers were going to wear gloves as well as volunteers taking tickets at entrances. Over 250 hand sanitizing stations were set up throughout the venue.

Other major sports and entertainment events in the desert are scheduled for next month.

The LPGA Tour is to play the first women’s golf major of the year, the ANA Inspiration, on April 2-5 in Rancho Mirage.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in nearby Indio is set for April 10-12 and April 17-19. It typically draws 250,000 people over two weekends. The Stagecoach Festival, featuring country music, is scheduled for April 24-26 at the same Indio venue.

More sporting events affected by spreading virus

More cycling races were canceled Friday and more soccer matches will be played in empty stadiums because of the virus outbreak spreading around the world.

RCS Sport, which organizes cycling events in Italy, canceled the Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo races as well as the Giro di Sicilia.

On Thursday, the Strade Bianche men’s and women’s races were canceled.

“RCS Sport will request the UCI, via the Italian Cycling Federation, to allocate new dates on the international cycling calendar for the three races, as has already been requested for Strade Bianche and Strade Bianche Women Elite,” RCS said in a statement.

The Italian government issued a decree on Wednesday that all sporting events in the country must take place without spectators until April 3. That includes Serie A, Italy’s top soccer league.

Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-San Remo were scheduled for this month, while the Giro di Sicilia was due to take place from April 1-4.

The canceled races will have implications as riders prepare for the year’s biggest events, such as the Giro d’Italia (May 9-31) and the Tour de France (June 27-July 19). The Tour is slated to start a week earlier this year to avoid conflict with the Tokyo Olympics.

Italy is the epicenter of Europe’s coronavirus outbreak. More than 100 people have died and more than 3,000 have been infected, mainly in the northern part of the country.

Cycling teams had already begun withdrawing from the Strade Bianche and other races this month in Italy and France, with some stopping racing altogether for much of March.

Spain-based cycling team Movistar also announced Friday that it was suspending participation in all races until March 22. The team led by Alejandro Valverde will miss the Paris-Nice race, among other events.

In rugby, the governing body of the sport in Italy said it has suspended all activity, including training. Six Nations matches against Ireland and England have already been postponed.

Also, Danish soccer club Copenhagen said all of its games in March would be played without fans.

The decision followed comments from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who said events with crowds of more than 1,000 should be canceled or postponed because of the virus.

Copenhagen said its Danish league games against Horsens, Randers FC and Lyngby, and the Europa League match against Istanbul Basaksehir, would be affected. Copenhagen said it had no information about its return game in Istanbul.

Two other Danish soccer teams, FC Midtjylland and Aarhus, have halted all physical interviews with players, coaches and other employees. Instead, any interviews will be done by telephone.

Interview opportunities with the media following matches will still be possible but will be reduced to a few minutes and with a safety distance of two meters (yards) between the player and the interviewer.

No one with the clubs has tested positive, but former Denmark national team player Thomas Kahlenberg has been put in quarantine because of the virus. Kahlenberg, who represented Denmark at the 2010 World Cup, attended a Danish league match on Sunday between Brondby and Lyngby. Several people related to those clubs have been quarantined as a precaution.

News conferences and media opportunities following soccer matches in Italy have also been scrapped, though TV broadcasters should still be allowed to carry out interviews under certain conditions.

In France, the roof at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy will remain open even if it rains when Lille hosts Lyon in a league match on Sunday.

“We will have to have the roof open with regards to the spreading of the virus,” Lille coach Christophe Galtier said. “We have to abide by this decision.”

The coronavirus reached 577 cases in France by Friday, with nine deaths, the country’s health ministry said. The French soccer league also has measures in place to help contain the virus, such as no handshakes and other modified protocol.

Curry scores 23 in return, Warriors fall to playoff-bound Raptors

Stephen Curry scored 23 points for Golden State in his anticipated return after missing more than four months with a broken left hand, but the Toronto Raptors beat the Warriors 121-113 Thursday night to clinch a playoff spot.

After being sidelined 58 games, Curry led Golden State out of the tunnel to a big ovation — as loud as his neon sneakers, one pink and one yellow. He missed his first two shots but had three quick assists, including a no-look, behind-the-back dish to Andrew Wiggins. He finished with seven assists in 26 minutes.

STEPHEN CURRY SETS RETURN DATE AFTER SUFFERING BROKEN HAND EARLY IN SEASON, REPORT SAYS

The two-time MVP hit a 17-footer for his first basket early in the second quarter, then got a huge reaction for a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc shortly before halftime. He was 3 of 11 from 3-point range for the game.

“It feels like the first day of school pretty much all over again,” the 31-year-old Curry said earlier in the day after shootaround. “It’s kind of just getting back to enjoying playing basketball at the highest level. There’s a process to that.”

Norman Powell scored a career-high 37 points for Toronto, which clinched a playoff berth with the win in a rematch of last year’s NBA Finals. The Raptors won that series in six games, finishing with a victory in Golden State’s final game at its old arena in Oakland.

Kyle Lowry added 26 points and 10 assists, and Serge Ibaka had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who won at Phoenix on Tuesday night to end a three-game losing streak.

“Knowing that Steph was coming back, we knew it was going to be a great night, a great atmosphere,” Lowry said. “One of the best players in the league was coming back from injury, we were a little more focused and concentrated on him, but coming in here, it’s a great regular season game.”

Damion Lee scored 23 points and Marquese Chriss had 17 points and 12 rebound for the Warriors, who have lost 10 straight at home.

Golden State trailed 62-55 at halftime but took an 85-83 lead in the third on Eric Paschall’s 3-pointer — with Curry on the bench, no less.

After Toronto regained the lead, Paschall tied it at 95 on a free throw with 9:39 left in the fourth quarter, but the Raptors countered with five straight points. A 3-pointer by Lowry and a powerful dunk from OG Anunoby helped Toronto stretch the lead moments later.

Curry checked back in with 3:51 left and hit a falling layup with two minutes remaining that pulled the Warriors within 113-108. Wiggins added a 3-pointer to make it 113-111, but Pascal Siakam made two baskets in 15 seconds to keep Toronto’s lead safe.

Lee stole the ball from Powell with 25.8 seconds left and was fouled by Powell. But he missed both free throws and then two 3-point tries after consecutive offensive rebounds.

Curry practiced Monday with the G League Santa Cruz Warriors, then was recalled later in the day in a most anticipated promotion. His return to action came without most of his familiar supporting cast — Draymond Green missed his fourth straight game with a left knee injury, and Klay Thompson remains out with a torn left ACL.

Ohio’s Arnold Sports Festival to be closed to spectators amid coronavirus outbreak

Ohio government and health officials announced Tuesday that athletic competitions will proceed as planned at the Arnold Sports Festival but no spectators will be allowed in all but two events amid fears of potentially spreading the new coronavirus.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said the four-day event’s convention and trade show at the Greater Columbus Convention Center was canceled but that Saturday night’s bodybuilding and strongman finals will be open to the 4,000 people who purchased tickets.

DeWine cited guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on large gatherings that factored into the decision.

The event, which will run from Thursday through Sunday, and was established and named after former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. It regularly draws up to 200,000 fans and 20,000 athletes from 80 countries who compete in dozens of events.

Around 20 athletes from five countries impacted by the coronavirus — China, Iran, South Korea, Japan and Italy —  will be excluded. All other athletes will be asked if they have traveled to affected countries.

In a video posted to Twitter, Schwarzenegger called the decision to cancel the event “a very sad day for me.”

“I think it was the right thing to do because we want to keep people safe, we want to keep people healthy,” he said. “We are promoting the health and fitness convention, so to us, we are the biggest and the best in the world but making money is less important than being healthy.”

Major events are being canceled all over the world as the coronavirus continues to spread. The Ultra Music Festival in Miami was postponed Wednesday after city leaders raised concerns about the large gathering over three days.

In Italy, where more than 100 people have died and more than 3,000 have been infected with COVID-19, officials said all sporting events for the next month would be played in empty stadiums to prevent further infections.

More virus cases linked to UAE Tour as riders face isolation

Westlake Legal Group UAE-cycling More virus cases linked to UAE Tour as riders face isolation fox-news/sports fox-news/health/infectious-disease/coronavirus fnc/sports fnc Associated Press article 036062b1-e868-5d7e-b74d-ee7428e9ddd5

Six more people with links to the canceled UAE Tour cycling race have been infected with the virus spreading around the world.

The Ministry of Health in the United Arab Emirates said in a statement that two Russians, two Italians, one German and one Colombian have been diagnosed with the virus. They were all linked to two previous cases involving Italians, it said.

Rider Igor Boev of the Gazprom-RusVelo team told Russian news agency RIA Novosti that he was in the hospital after being diagnosed. Boev said he was waiting for more test results and said the hospital food was “more than fine for a normal person but not enough for a pro rider.”

Riders from other teams are staying in isolation in case they develop symptoms. Arnaud Demare of Groupama-FDJ posted a video of makeshift fitness routines in his hotel room and eating food delivered in a paper bag.

The UCI said Abu Dhabi authorities ordered riders and staff from Groupama-FDJ, Gazprom-RusVelo and Cofidis to be isolated until March 14. They’re all staying on the same floor of a hotel.

Cofidis team president Thierry Vittu said Wednesday it was a relief to have a deadline for when riders and staff could leave, even if it’s still some time away.

“Now we know where we stand, and even if the confinement in the room continues, everyone will manage to find occupations, distractions, activities,” he said on the team website. “We are going to stay in solidarity with each other, conscious that we are living a collective adventure, that we would have liked not to live, but which will teach us about ourselves and others. We already tell ourselves that in a few months, we will be laughing about it among ourselves.”

The last two stages of the UAE Tour were canceled on Feb. 28 after two virus cases among team staff members. British rider Adam Yates was declared the winner because he was leading after the first five stages.

In Italy, soccer officials said the second leg of the Italian Cup semifinals between Napoli and Inter Milan scheduled for Thursday in Naples has been postponed indefinitely.

The other semifinal match, Juventus-AC Milan, scheduled for Wednesday had already been postponed.

Ten Serie A matches scheduled over the past two weekends have also been postponed.

German soccer club Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday canceled a preseason tour of Asia because of the virus outbreak, while some fans have been asked not to attend a Bundesliga game this weekend.

Dortmund apologized to fans in Asia, saying that the planned tour of China and other countries couldn’t go ahead because it is “not possible to make safe travel arrangements.”

Dortmund is to play at title challenger Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday. That is the closest Bundesliga team to the area of Heinsberg, where a cluster of virus cases have been reported.

Following talks with regional government officials, Gladbach said the game would go ahead but asked fans from Heinsberg not to attend. They will be offered a refund and a free ticket to a European home game next season.

The French league is trying to reduce players’ physical contact at games. The league said players won’t have to shake hands with their opponents, and the players and referee will hold child mascots by the shoulders, not by the hands.

In tennis, players will have to handle their own towels at an Italy-South Korea Davis Cup qualifier scheduled for this weekend — freeing ball kids of the duty.

The match in Cagliari, Sardinia, could be called off or played in an empty stadium, however.

“We’re awaiting government orders,” Italy captain Corrado Barazzutti said. “We’ll play if we can. We’ll play without fans if they tell us to. And we won’t play if they tell us not to.”

The International Boxing Association postponed its congress from March 20 to June 20, citing concerns by Hungarian authorities about delegates from countries with virus cases. The Hungarian capital of Budapest remains the host despite the delay.

The congress was a key step for the association, known as AIBA, to restore confidence after years of infighting and financial crises.

AIBA was barred last year from running the Tokyo Olympic boxing tournament after the International Olympic Committee criticized its leadership and questioned the integrity of its judging and refereeing. AIBA said interim president Mohamed Moustahsane, a former ringside doctor, would remain in office until the new June congress.

Piet and Coulter died after the accident but Cannon later died at the hospital, where he had been on life support until his organs could be donated, hospital officials confirmed Tuesday morning.

They were members of the Detroit Mechanix.

Michigan State Police responded to the scene of the crash at around 7 p.m. after the men were accidentally rear-ended by a 34-year-old Detroit man who failed to slow down, according to The Grand Rapids Press.

There was reportedly a separate accident further down the highway causing the slowdown.
